Hawaii Hacks
Life in the Islands is complicated enough without the everyday annoyances that make us say: why doesn't someone come up with a solution? Chances are they have. Finding shortcuts, efficiencies and ways to boost your productivity at work, school and home – that's what this blog is about. It's a community effort, because no one person has all the answers. So join in with your tips and finds. Sandee Oshiro is The Advertiser's managing editor for digital and multimedia. She's in perpetual search for a way to wash the dog in five minutes.

Heads in the clouds

It's downright fascinating to me to watch Microsoft, the corporate giant that once ruled the world, flailing about for a strategy that will ensure its future.
This company was such a perceived threat that whole governments felt compelled to prosecute it occasionally, just so it wouldn't get so cocky.
In its latest scramble for survival, Microsoft has made an unsolicited bid for Yahoo! which is reacting like it's been asked to the spring prom by the school nerd. It's busy trying to find another date so it'll have an excuse for the night.
Microsoft vs. Yahoo! isn't just a dry business story. It's all about how you and I will do computing in the future. Very soon if the stars align, we won't need to buy overpriced, underdeveloped computer software on CDs or in downloads to our computers. We'll just hop on the Web for the apps we need.
Already some amazing Web-based services are available, often free, and this so-called cloud computing is getting better all the time.
Try Google Docs or the photo editing site Picnik and you'll see what I mean.
Microsoft knows what's happening and it's figuring maybe it oughta get positioned for this Internet thing. If it swallowed Yahoo! it just might get it, or maybe not.
OK, your turn: what's your favorite Web-based service? What site can't you live without?

Skype! I'm never paying more than 2 cents per minute for an international phone call again.

Open source software grew rapidly in the online communities; websites like SourceForge.net contain millions of useful free software that almost can substitute for anything charging out there. I used OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office, 7-Zip instead of WinZip, Community Codec instead of PowerDVD… If Microsoft really wants to stay in a safe harbor to lead the software market, it better come up with really amazing things that others can’t sub. In another sense, it has to beat down not only its competitors, also the brilliant and warm hearted non-profit software developers out there.

The death of HD-DVD, the desperate grab for Yahoo! and the tepid response to Vista (may it die soon) are signs that Microsoft is a dead company walking. This is a company that has failed --FAILED-- at everything not named Office or Windows. Xbox, Zune, MSN... all failed to succeed. So much for monopoly power, eh?

However, as Microsoft fades, someone else (Google, open source, Apple, Linux, etc.) will fill the vacuum. This seems to be an industry that --like most-- needs to coalesce around some core company or standard.

I think cloud computing is for the birds at this point and near future, you can't always count on 100% connectivity (think neighbor islands or riding the subway in New York). Open Office (Windows) or Neo Office (Mac) are great alternatives to MS Office. Seahorse on the Mac is a nice image editing app that's free.

As for Yahoo, it would be smarter for a media company like Gannett or Times-Mirror, or KR to buy them. They could use the engineers there to out Craigslist Craigslist, develop online ad technology, use their search for their own news websites. Yahoo has plenty of eyeballs using Yahoo Mail, their groups and calendar apps, even more than Google.

Microsoft should concentrate on their core business. Cutting-edge operating systems in technologies like robotics. Worked for Cyberdyne Corp didn't it? Or does cloud computing=Skynet?
