Hawaii Hacks
Life in the Islands is complicated enough without the everyday annoyances that make us say: why doesn't someone come up with a solution? Chances are they have. Finding shortcuts, efficiencies and ways to boost your productivity at work, school and home – that's what this blog is about. It's a community effort, because no one person has all the answers. So join in with your tips and finds. Sandee Oshiro is The Advertiser's managing editor for digital and multimedia. She's in perpetual search for a way to wash the dog in five minutes.

A word from our sponsor

You may have seen the promotional banner asking you to take a test drive of our new beta site.

Do me a favor, willya? Put down the Wii controller, take a look at the new site and let us know what you think.

This redesign is a slicker, updated version of our present layout. You'll still get all of the breaking news and daily Advertiser content that are at the core of our services.

But we're also introducing a suite of social networking tools aimed at giving you a virtual space to be on stage or connect with friends and family.

You can build a personal page, exchange messages with friends, upload photo galleries and contribute to our gazillion forums.

What we'd like to see here is whole crowds of people building communities of interests, whether they be around iPhones or extreme skateboarding or the meaning of meh — get some pals together and start building infrastructure. I've always wanted to plop that word in a sentence.

I'd especially like to hear ideas on how to use these networking tools for business and personal productivity. Post your comments below or e-mail us at feedback@honoluluadvertiser.com.

Anybody want to start a Fisher Hawaii fan club?

re the beta site: Where's the link to the blogs?

I would move the current/breaking news, sports, business, etc. (like how the hardcopy newspaper is organized) to the top of the website. Move the community and community news to the bottom. Put the ad space on the left side on the bottom left and move the links on the left higher up so the user doesn't have to scroll too much.

In the navagaion bar, put your cursor on Opinion, a bar will appear right below with different links. "Staff blogs" link is all the way on the left.

Thanks, homey, for your comments.
We'll be highlighting our staff blogs beyond the navigation once the homepage is fully filled out. You'll see these in the promotional spaces, such as under the rotating carousel. The reader blogs will be highlighted in the community space.
I'll pass your suggestions on placement of the various features to the folks who make the decisions. Much appreciate it!

No matter how fancy you make your front page, no matter what Web 2.0 bells and whistles you may add, until you release your back issues freely, as the Star Bulletin does, this will always be a second-rate website.

I don't like it. At first glance it seems too generic, maybe "too slick" can be too slick. The current site kinda reflects the look of the paper, while the new site obviously doesn't (unless the paper is being redesigned to match).

Um...Fisher Hawaii fan site...

OK so I went to your beta site and I'm kinda not feeling it. I liked the fact that you could choose where you would want to go from the left hand bars. On your new beta site you have to look for the heading and then choose your interested, complicated. I also think that the new log in procedure isn't gonna sit well with your blogs and such. To much hassle to log in and enter your info and stuff. I like the fact that I can remain anonomous and type my comment and be out. I assume that most of your posters on the blogs do it from work and it might make things complicated. I was initially going to create an id just to test it but stopped when it started asking for my age and other personal info. Sorry, but I think it might cut down on your currently popular blogs.
