As we all get ready for the Sweet Sixteen, the NCAA has announced that it expects record attendance at all four regional sites. Charlotte and Phoenix are sold out ( Charlotte with mostly Carolina Blueclad UNC fans), while Detroit and Houston, the sites for the next two final fours, are experimenting with new seating which will place the basketball floor in the middle of these large stadiums with temporary seating surrounding the floor, which the NCAA announced today, will be made available in the next two Final Fours, to students at a discounted price. Its a great idea and long overdue as it will bring the atmosphere of a college crowd, not lots of rich business folks, back to the event.
Does Washington State have a real chance later this afternoon to beat UNC? On my show yesterday, both John Feinstein and Eddie Fogler do not believe they do. In fact, Feinstein told our listeners that if Washington State can hold UNC to 41 FIRST HALF points, it will be a victory of sorts. We also talked to Derrick Low who told us his team is loose and not in awe of the Tarheels. You may not know this, but Derrick was initially recruited by Roy Williams when Roy was still at Kansas. Coach Williams ultimately decided not to offer Derrick a scholarship, but had the courtesy and decency to tell Derrick early on that Derrick should look elsewhere. It ended pretty good for all concerned I would say.
