D Low and the Lopez Twins

It has been quite a Saturday in Round 2 of the NCAA Tournament. First, Duke goes down to W. Virgina. Coach K does not make it to the sweet sixteen for the second straight year.

Then D Low leads the Washington Stater Cougers past Notre Dame with 18 points. Its not so much that the Cougars won, but the way they dominated the game. Patient offense and great defense will make them tough, even if they face number 1 seed UNC on Thursday.

Was there a better game then Stanford's overtime victory over Marquette. After Trent Johnson got himself ejected with two technical fouls in the first half, the Lopez twins took over down the stretch and in the overtime.

By the way, if KKEA wants to broadcast UH sports when it conflicts with its broadcasts of the NCAA Tournament, then dont take the rights so other stations can let all of us in Hawaii listen to the games. I know, I work for the competition, but its unfair to take the rights and then leave us without the ability to listen to the games, something that happened on Friday and Saturday. If you want to be the UH sports station, no problem. But this isn't the first time an NFL game or an NCAA game has been preempted by UH sports. KKEA knew there would be a conflict, so either give up the rights or put it on another of your stations. Not all of us can get to a TV.

Not a Good Friday

With four games left to go, it has not been a Good Friday for high seeded teams. Already gone today is number 4 Vanderbilt to number 13 Sienna, number 4 Uconn to a 12 seeded San Diego team that only beat the Bows by 1 in the second game of the year; Number 5 and mid major darling Drake to number 12 Western Kentucky; and Number 10 Davidson who continue the longest winning streak in college basketball with its win over number 7 Gonzaga. So on Sunday, its a 12 vrs 13 match up in the West.

Add number 11 kansas State, and you have 5 10 seeds or higher still in it. But having said that, 19 of the top 20 Pomeroy RPI are still in it( USC was number 20). Numbers 21, uconn, 22,arizonia, and 24, drake, are gone.

Day 1 ; The Chalk Rules

It was a day for favorites on Day one as only 11th seed Kansas State victory over 6th seed USC can be considered a mild surprise. Even with Washington State and UCLA big wins, it was a disappointing day for the Pac 10.Belmont was a last second miss away from what would have been only the 5th time in history a 15 seed beat a 2 seed. Will this almost loss propel Duke to a second round win over West Virgina or is Duke a team that is ready to lose?

We said earlier that this looked like the year that most of the top 8 seeds would survive first round games setting up great gamesthis weekend. How about Pitt vrs Michigan State;Purdue/Xavier;NotreDame v. Washington State and Stanford v. Marquette. The number one seeds all had laffers winning by 20 or more points.

Tomorrow, look for a few upsets. St. Joe's over Oklahoma,Davidson over Gonzaga, and St. Mary's over Miami are my picks.

NCAA musings

Final four UNC, UCLA, Kansas, and Texas. National Champ UNC with Kansas a close second. First round upsets ( at least a 10 beating a 7) include St Joe over Oklahoma;Sienna over Vandy;Davidson over Gonzaga;Temple over Mich St;St.Mary's over Miami; Second round upsets Butler over Tenn; USC over Wisc.First number one seed to fall, but not this weekend, Memphis. Lowest seed to advance to Sweet 16 Butler (7);Notre Dame(5);USC(6);Clemson(5). This is a year where I belive there will be no real Cinderella with most of the top 3 seeds making it to the elite 8.

On the radio show today, Riley Wallace said that Kansas will not win a National Championship so long as Bill Self is the Coach. I wonder what the history is there. He also likes UCLA to win it all, as do many others " in the know".

Tomorrow and Friday are, in my opinion, two of the best days in all of sport. 16 games each day. That is the definition of Hoops Heaven, and with Friday being a holiday, many of us will not have to call in sick or change our computer screen every time the boss walks by.

Next week on the radio show, we will have that interview with John Feinstein. John"s cell phone did not work at the Verizon Arena where he was watching practices for the games tomorrow from Washington, D.C. And, we will have a very special interview with Jim Donovan, who will answer your phone questions.

let the games begin

having trouble filing out your brackets? Tonight on a special fan phones at 7pm on AM 1500, we will go thru every game from Round 1 thru the final game. And tomorrow on my show starting at 6am, I will be joined by Riley Wallace and John Feinstein as we discuss the entire tournament. Other special guests are pending.

lots of talk about bubble teams in and bubble teams out. Here's my take. If you want to have the best teams, then forget about the 5th place team in the major conferences and the conference champs from the " nobody ever heard of" conferences, and just let the regular season champs and the conference champs from the major and mid major conferences play off, with a few wild cards from the major conferences. If you want everybody to have a shot, include all 340 plus teams that play Division 1 basketball. Just have teams play 2 less regular season games and start the season a week earlier. Play the first two rounds on the home court of the higher ranked team and then go to the regular 64 team format. Bob Knight's suggestion to go to 128 teams makes no sense. You will still have bubble teams, and further dilute the haves from the havenots. In any event, dont expect the turtles at the NCAA to act anytime soon. Your ideas should be posted here.

tonight i can hardly wait for the big game, Coppin State vrs Mt. St. Mary's Since its Easter Week, I'm, going with the Catholic school. That's the way to pick winners all the way thru ( nicknames, best band, etc)
