Meet the Tsai-kos

Last night was the second-ever Blog Party in honor of resident blogger Stephen Tsai.

Organized by the blog regulars, the party started at 6 p.m. at Ryan's Grill at Ward Center. More than two dozen people showed up — nearly triple the number that came last time to Murphy's Bar & Grill.

About 30 people showed up last night at Ryan's Grill.

The man of honor — Tsai — sandwiched between Al and Dave.

The special guest start last night? UH assistant coach Jeff Reinebold,

Reinebold talked about UH's defensive line, among other things.

Blog regulars got to ask Reinebold anything they wanted — and they did!

Dave, who monitors SportsHawaii.com, was there to present Tsai with the award of 2007 Sports Writer of the Year, as voted by fans online.

Dave even gave diehard UH fan and team volunteer Brian Kajiyama an award, too. Just for being so inspirational.

Kajiyama accepts his deserving award.

Also making her debut was Da Punchbowl Kid's new bride, Sweety.

These guys are full-on Tsai fans. Not only do they conduct extensive conversations on his blog, but they genuinely dig each other. And they love Tsai.

Much mahalos for everything Cat-rah, you are really a blessing to us and especially those members of the Warrior Nation who reside outside of our fair state, they enjoy your postings here a lot. Keep up the good work!

I'm just living in Jeff's world and am along for the ride!

I posted on Tsai's other entry, but thanks again for a GREAT night y'all. Jeff and I really enjoyed it and look forward to the next one.

I think Cat deserves a BIG banner like Tsai. But that means she'll need to have a blogger's fiesta so it can be displayed and enjoyed!

I'm sure someone can make that happen!

CAT,
don't be silly, if we made a banner, we could put it out to auction and use the proceeds to offset the spring gig we're trying to coordinate. how about it? wouldn't you love to be immortalized in a banner, a big one, not the pee wee one we used for Tsai, his head is too too big already.....he walks sideways through doors already, haha.

no, really, a full banner, tastefully done of CAT would generate enough revenue to offset the costs of our proposed bbcue?

Hi Cat. I think we are all flattered that you captured and identified most of us. You also captured most of us in photos too ;-)

Back in the days when Al and I were in high school, the cry, "Hah--you nabbed!" would echo through the halls. Boy, are we nabbed. You caught us. Ahh...need any favors or something?

Seriously though, you and Stephen Tsai are crafting and pioneering a tandem online experience that many theses and dissertations might explore. But for us, it's fun. Thanks again. We'll get Peaches on a surfboard yet (gotta watch what I say--Peaches will be checking here now.)

A burger from the Pineapple Room sounds expensive. It better come with thick fries and not those skinny Mcdonald's fries. What? No Maui onions? It's not a burger without the aftertaste of Maui onions.

Shiro's saimin is tasty. Getting to be too expensive though. Must be because of the increase in minimum wage. Whenever I go there I eat the "Dodonpa". It comes with Chinese roast pork, charsiu, a piece of shrimp tempura, slice of egg, ham slices, 4 won tons, veggies, slice of roast beef, all in a large bowl. Costs around $9.

For that price I would rather hop over to Waimalu Chop Suey and have an order of Soft Gau Gee Mein (gravy style).

never had a saimin at shiro's. the dodonpa is the king of tsaimin(sp?). they also got jj's favorite the joe moore special saimin.

but, yes, the waimalu chop suey has the world's largest chinese gau gee. it is very good. i am also sure if you can handle a jumbo jack you can do this one.

best pho, to me, is at hale vietnam. for less than 8 bucks you can have a bowl full with the side vegs. i prefer the rare steak (on the side) and tendons. for less than 20 bucks you and mr gigi could have a great dinner. clean place with excellent service. they also serve a mean spring rolls and garlic string beans. i also like it because its 5 min from the house.

the best duck noodle just closed down. that was at helen's chop suey on kapahulu.

They sell ahi poke, but it's $3.23 for a 5oz cup (the size for ranch dressing with wings). I can't bring myself to spend that much for that little. I need to sharpen my culinary skills so I can make it myself.

Aloha John from SD

This is a recipe I've used for ahi shoyu poke...

1 lb. ahi
1 T. sea salt
1/2 t. imamona
3-4 T. shoyu
1 Hawaiian chili pepper, minced
1 1/2 c. ogo seaweed
1/4 c. chopped Maui onion
1/2 t. fresh minced ginger
1/4 c. chopped green onion
1 1/2 T. sesame oil

I don't know how much ahi costs in SD, but I usually get a chunk from Costco..around $10/lb; not the best but good enough with the green bottle...;-)

as requested,
An old cowhand came riding into town on a hot, dry, dusty day. The local sheriff watched from his chair in front of the saloon as the cowboy wearily dismounted and tied his horse to the rail. The cowboy then moved slowly to the back of his horse, lifted its tail, and placed a big kiss where the sun don't shine. He dropped the horse's tail, stepped up on the walk and aimed toward the swinging doors of the saloon.

"Hold on there, Mister," said the sheriff. "Did I just see what I think I saw?"

"Reckon you did, Sheriff. I got me some powerful chapped lips."

"And that cures them?" the Sheriff asked.

"Nope, but it keeps me from lickin' 'em."

A young ventriloquist is touring the clubs and one night he's doing a show in a small town in Arkansas. With his dummy on his knee, he starts going through his usual dumb blonde jokes when a blonde woman in the 4th row stands on her chair and starts shouting: "I've heard enough of your stupid blonde jokes. What makes you think you can stereotype women that way? What does the color of a person's hair have to do with her worth as a human being? It's guys like you who keep women like me from being respected at work and in the community and from reaching our full potential as a person. Because you and your kind continue to perpetuate discrimination against not only blondes, but women in general and all in the name of humor!" The embarrassed ventriloquist begins to apologize, and the blonde yells, "You stay out of this, mister! I'm talking to that little sh*t on your knee."

The Indians asked their Chief in autumn if the winter was going to be cold or not. Not really knowing an answer, the chief replies that the winter was going to be cold and that the members of the village were to collect wood to be prepared.

Being a good leader, he then went to the next phone booth and called the National Weather Service and asked, "Is this winter to be cold?"

The man on the phone responded, "This winter was going to be quite cold indeed." So the Chief went back to speed up his people to collect even more wood to be prepared.

A week later he called the National Weather Service again, "Is it going to be a VERY cold winter?"

"Yes", the man replied, "it's going to be a very cold winter."

So the Chief goes back to his people and orders them to go and find every scrap of wood they can find. Two weeks later he calls the National Weather Service again: "Are you absolutely sure, that the winter is going to be very cold?"

"Absolutely" the man replies, "the Indians are collecting wood like crazy!

An Asian man walks into a New York Currency Exchange with 8000 yen. He receives $72.00 in American currency. The following week, the same Asian man walks into the same currency exchange. He again exchanges 8000 yen. This time, he receives $66.00 in American currency. The Asian man doesn't understand why he received less money, so he asks the clerk, "Why less money when same 8000 yen"

The clerk replies, "Fluctuations." As the Asian man prepares to leave, he turns, looks at the clerk and angrily says, "Fluck you Amelicans, too!"

Couple in their nineties are both having problems remembering things. During
a checkup, the doctor tells them that they're physically okay, but they might
want to start writing things down to help them remember.

Later that night, while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair. "Want anything while I'm in the kitchen?" he asks. "Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?"
"Sure."

"Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?" she asks.
"No, I can remember it."
"Well, I'd like some strawberries on top, too. Maybe you should write it
down,so's not to forget it?"
He says, "I can remember that. You want a bowl of ice cream with trawberries."
"I'd also like whipped cream. I'm certain you'll forget that, write it down?" she asks.
Irritated, he says, "I don't need to write it down, I can remember it! Ice
cream with strawberries and whipped cream - I got it, for goodness sake!"
Then he toddles into the kitchen. After about 20 minutes, the old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and
eggs. She stares at the plate for a moment.

"Where's my toast ?" ;-)

Mr Longtime, I accept your challange

A man is waiting for his wife to give birth. The doctor comes in and informs the dad that his son was born without a torso, arms or legs. The son is just a head! But the dad loves his son and raises him as well as he can, with love and compassion.

After 21 years, the son is now old enough for his first drink. Dad takes him to the bar, tearfully tells the son he is proud of him and orders up the biggest, strongest drink for his boy. With all the bar patrons looking on curiously and the bartender shaking his head in disbelief, the boy takes his first sip of alcohol. Swoooop! A torso pops out! The bar is dead silent; then bursts into a whoop of joy. The father, shocked, begs his son to drink again.

The patrons chant "Take another drink"! The bartender still shakes his head in dismay. Swoooop! Two arms pops out! The bar goes wild. The father, crying and wailing, begs his son to drink again. The patrons chant "Take another drink"! The bartender ignores the whole affair.

By now the boy is getting tipsy, and with his new hands he reaches down, grabs his drink and guzzles the last of it. Swoooop! Two legs pop out. The bar is in chaos. The father falls to his knees and tearfully thanks God. The boy stands up on his new legs and stumbles to the left... then to the right... right through the front door, into the street, where a truck runs over him and kills him instantly. The bar falls silent. The father moans in grief. The bartender sighs and says... "He should have quit while he was a head!"

man returns from Africa feeling very ill. He visits his doctor, who immediately rushes the guy to the intensive care unit at the local hospital. The man wakes up to the ringing of a telephone and answers it. “We’ve received the results from your tests,” says the doctor on the other end of the line. “Bad news—you have Ebola.” “Oh, my God,” cries the man. “Doc! What am I going to do?” “Don’t worry. First, we’re going to put you on a diet of pizza, pancakes, and pita bread,” says the doctor. “Will that cure me?” “No, but it’s the only food we’ll be able to get under the door.”

A man and his wife walked into a dentist's office. The man said to the dentist, "Doc, I'm in one hell of a hurry! I have two buddies sitting out in my car waiting for us to go play golf. So forget about the anesthetic and just pull the tooth and be done with it. We have a 10:00 AM tee time at the best golf course in town and it's 9:30 already. I don't have time to wait for the anesthetic to work!"

The dentist thought to himself, "My goodness, this is surely a very brave man asking to have his tooth pulled without using anything to kill the pain." So the dentist ask him, "Which tooth is it sir?"

The man turned to his wife and said, "Open your mouth Honey, and show him."

Palace Saimin
Wun Tun Min ($3.50, $4.50, $5.25): OK, so the saimin itself is standard but not exceptional, and the won tuns in the won tun min are both slightly overcooked and underfilled, but any bowl at this old school spot is satisfying and super cheap. The real incentive is the $1.50 BBQ beef sticks, tender, shoyu-sweet and perfectly charred, to go alongside. Don’t be surprised if there’s a line noodling from the kitchen to the parking lot. If you’re lucky enough to snag one of the few tables with padded benches, get yourself a Diamond Head strawberry soda ($0.80) from the vending machine and dig in.

OK Mr Las Vegas,
How about some Catholic Humor;
Hope it doesn't offend anyone...

A Catholic priest and a nun were taking a rare afternoon off, and enjoying a round of golf. The priest stepped up to the first tee and took a
mighty swing. He missed the ball entirely and said "Sh*t I missed. " The good Sister told him to watch his language.

On his next swing, he missed again. "Sh*t, I missed."
"Father, I'm not going to play with you if you keep swearing," the nun said tartly.
The priest promised to do better and the round continued. On the 4th tee,
he misses again, and the usual comment followed.

Sister is really mad now and says, "Father John, God is going to strike you dead if you keep swearing like that."

On the next tee, Father John swings and misses again. "Sh*t, I missed".

A terrible rumble is heard and a gigantic bolt of lightning comes out of the sky and strikes Sister Marie dead in her tracks.

And from the sky comes a booming voice .

"SH*T, I MISSED"

vegas,

just for you....WOMAN GETS FACELIFT....

A woman decides to have a facelift for her 50th birthday.
She spends$15,000 and feels pretty good about the results.
On her way home, she stops at a newsstand to buy a newspaper.
Before leaving, she says to the clerk, "I hope you don't mind
my asking, but how old do you think I am?"
"About 32," is the reply.
"Nope! I'm exactly 50," the woman says happily.

A little while later she goes into McDonald's and asks the
counter girl the very same question.
The girl replies, "I'd guess about 29."
The woman replies with a big smile, "Nope, I'm 50."

Now she's feeling really good about herself. She stops in a
drug store on her way down the street. She goes up to the
counter to get some mints and asks the clerk this burning
question.

The clerk responds, "Oh, I'd say 30."

Again she proudly responds, "I'm 50, but thank you!"

While waiting for the bus to go home, she asks an old man
waiting next to her the same question.
He replies, "Lady, I'm 78 and my eyesight is going.
Although, when I was young, there was a sure-fire way to tell
how old a woman was. It sounds very forward, but it requires
you to let me put my hands under your bra. Then, and only then
can I tell you EXACTLY how old you are."

They wait in silence on the empty street until her curiosity
gets the best of her. She finally blurts out, "What the hell,
go ahead."

He slips both of his hands under her blouse and begins to feel
around very slowly and carefully. He bounces and weighs each
breast and he gently pinches each nipple. He pushes her breasts
together and rubs them against each other.

After a couple of minutes of this, she says, "Okay, okay...How
old am I?"

He completes one last squeeze of her breasts, removes his
hands, and says, "Madam, you are 50."

Stunned and amazed, the woman says, "That was incredible, how
could you tell?"

The old man says, "Promise you won't get mad?"

"I promise I won't." she says.

"I was behind you in line at McDonald's."
