It's a war zone out there!

Man, was it storming last night!

I probably didn't get much more than half an hour of sleep last night, with all the winds and rain pounding our upstairs unit.

When I got up this morning, the neighborhood was drenched and littered with palm fronds and other debris. A few portable toilets at the corner of Hawai'i Kai Drive and Kalaniana'ole Highway were knocked over. But that's about it.

I took the roundabout way to work this morning to shoot some photos of some areas in town.

Here's what my commute looked like:

Traffic on Kalaniana'ole Highway wasn't too bad. Just the usual slowdowns.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Certain areas along the highway were flooded, but nothing major. No signals were out, thankfully.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
I decided to get off the highway and take the backroads to work. Bad idea! The lights at the corner of Wai'alae and Kilauea avenues were out, and police were routing vehicles to detours.

There was a downed tree on 'Elepaio Street in Kahala. We couldn't get through that street to Diamond Head Road because of flooding; we all had to turn around and find another route.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
This tree on 22nd Avenue barely survived the high winds last night.

Portable toilets on the marathon route were knocked around. Hope no one was in them!

Here's the surf at Diamond Head this morning. No one was out. I don't blame them!

I gotta give credit to everyone who braved the weather this morning. I surprised at the number of people running, biking and walking around Diamond Head and Waikiki. Kudos to you!

This tree on Diamond Head Road hung on!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
There weren't any major rock and/or mud slides along the road this morning. This was all I saw.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this: a tree entirely uprooted at Kapi'olani Park!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
At first, I saw it from behind. But from the front, with the roots exposed, the damage was very impressive.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Here's an up-close look at the roots.

The streets around Kapi'olani Park were a mess. Lots of debris and puddles. Didn't help that for some folks it was garbage day. Cans were knocked over and trash strewn on sidewalks and streets.

The south winds mucked up Waikiki. Here's a shot of Queen's this morning.

Here's a sight you don't see too often: Waikiki — empty.

Wow, I guess it depends on where you live. I heard about and seen video and pics of the other areas and it was pretty bad.

But it was mostly uneventful for me in my area of Kalihi near Bishop Museum. Rain and some stronger wind gusts but nothing major. No power outage except that our cable went out for a while. Slept through the brunt of the storm.

Nature's force and damage evident, it is still strikingly beautiful. From a hotel in DC, where there is a blanket of snow right now, I sit in awe of our terrestrial home.

Drive gently and enjoy the scenery.

Thanks for the pics!

like rayboyjr nothing really huge...woke up around 3 am to very loud wind gusts, then the rain. it rained so hard i was afraid we'd spring a leak, but luckily no! with the exception of a few of my potted plants and the end of my icicle lights everything else is in tact. on the way down the hill one tree lost its branch very close to a parked car, but no puddles. still pretty windy out there! but the weather people say the worst has past, right?

I came home last night to huge gusting winds on the Windward side. Our power was out from around 11pm until 4ish this morning. Still is out in other parts of Kailua. My roommate didn't have to go to work today as the school she teaches at didn't have any power. But I drove the long way in to town since the Pali was closed both ways. Winds aren't nearly as bad here.

I heard a bus got struck by lightning coming from Honolulu to the Windward side!

Woke up around 3:30 from the strong wind pounding on the windows. Didn't see anything unusual during my drive to work from Palolo Valley to Pearl City at 5:30 this morning except that traffic was lighter.

from Mililani Mauka: got woken up around 3:30 am by the awful shaking of the house windows and couldn't get back to sleep after that. The power was off at that time. Water was seeping in from the weep holes in all the windows, so we had to go around and put towels down to help collect the water. Drove from Mililani into work (in town), and the freeway was very clear! I got to work in half the usual time, however it was a bit dangerous in Mililani with all the traffic lights out. I'm hearing from my wife that the power is *still* out in the Mililani area!!!

Nice photos, Cat...must be the reporter in you. Hope we didn't lose too many trees. Yeah, left Mililani at 5am. No traffic lights, power out, did all my bathroom stuff in the dark, used my cel phone to find shaver...makes a good flashlight in a pinch. After going through the littered roads and on the freeway, traffic bad around H1-2 merge due to flooding, I was thinking, idiot, go back home but maybe not a good idea since I would have had to go back on the dark surface streets, which may be even more dangerous. At least we had power at work.

Woke up at 3:30 to rain coming through our crappy louvre windows. Plugged all window and doors with towels to keep the water out. Thought we were homefree. Then, an hour later, our ceiling starts leaking in the middle of our bedroom. Our upstairs neighbors did not stop the water and their apartment flooded which ended up dripping onto us!

Well here we go again. I guess we will be seeing a lot of pot holes.

The wind was weird. It was coming from different directions. There was no steady stream just intermittent gusts.

That tree in Kapiolani Park makes me sad because I bbqed there just a few months ago! Oh well, have to find another favorite spot I guess...

I'm used to power outages, having been a loyal HECO victim for most of my life, but this morning I needed to run a nebulizer to help control my toddler's asthma. Had to bundle everyone in the car and go looking for a working outlet. In heavy rain, wind, and pitch darkness, no working traffic lights, roads covered with water, branches, and the occasional power line. Fun!

Time to buy a generator.

From Mililani Mauka: woke up around 3:30 to the sound of the wind rattling the tree outside my window. It was crazy! Couldn't see a damn thing. Some roof tiles fell off but nothing major thank God. A tree at the Mililani Mauka park & ride fell over and the construction site near tesero gas is a mess. So glad I didn't go to work today, traffic must have been horrible with all the debris. Spent most of the day catching up on some sleep lol. Hope everyone stayed safe. No reports of casualties right? Thankgoodness for this iPhone, its been my only news source while we were out of power. I'd also like to say thanks to kssk, they were the only station I could get this morning...& all the wonderful fire, police, heco, etc crew for all their hardwork.

Lights went out about 3 A.M. which led us to look outside. The winds and rain were very strong. It looked like the drivers had zero visibility. We had prepared the flashlights earlier in the day, just in case. It's a good thing we did. The winds were so powerful, they were shaking our sliding glass doors. That was kind of creepy. From what I understand, we are in for more winds and rain.

14th floor. Ward area, downtown. Woke up at 3:28am to rattling-shaking-waving sliding glass doors... the wind was so powerful. I pulled the 'spouse unit' out of bed so we weren't right next to the sliding glass doors. Eeeh! Couldn't sleep with all of the rain & wind. So, at 5am I turned on the TV to watch KGMB 5am news. Ha! The power went out! Tried to take pics but it didn't look as dramatic in photographs as being there in person.

WHY DOESNT HECO MOVE INTO THE MODERN WORLD AND TAKE THE POWERLINES UNDERGROUND? THIS HAPPENS EVERYTIME WE HAVE A BIG STOR--DUH
Permalink 12/05/07 @ 23:05
Comment from: Ron [Visitor]
Simple. It's costly. In 1990, it costed the phone company $150 PER FOOT, to trench and prepare to install phone cables underground in the street. Electrical duct lines cost much more. And, you need separate ducts for power, phone, cable TV, etc.

The rate payer is not going to pay for it in your neighborhood. If the real estate development company didn't underground the lines in your neighborhood before it offered you the homes for sale, your association or similar organization will be assessing you some good bucks to UG your utilities.

And, that doesn't make it risk free. If the underground lines are placed in the street or other area prone to flooding, it could short out and cause explosions, fire and other problems. We've seen that in downtown in the mid-1990's.

I was driving on Maui today, right about the time when the "red swath" on the doppler radar came over us. Man, I couldn't see more than 50 ft. in front of me. Scary.

I saw a black dust fence around a construction site near my house knocked over due to the high winds - with all these flashing lights in the immediate vicinity. Fire, police, and ambulance. I'm not sure what happened, but it looked like someone got hit by the lumber holding up the fencing. I hope they're all right...
