Transit slides by on a thread

A majority vote is a majority vote. So Tuesday's 5-4 vote by the Honolulu City Council can be counted as a win for those who seek a mass transit system for the City.

The vote, in which a specific route was designated, was critical. Had it failed, and it might well have, the entire project would have been off track, perhaps forever.

But you have to wonder about a political system in which a single vote margin is enough to set in motion what will likely be a $5 billion project that will change the face of Honolulu forever.

In effect, a transit project for Honolulu is a go, but by the slimmest of margins. Things could change again.

I must admit that I stopped reading about the transit system a while back. Maybe it is because I thought it would never happen (yes, the glass is half empty). But it is curious to me that folks are upset about the new route. Are there more UH Manoa students than downtown and Waikiki employees? Is there evidence that tourist will use the rail or will they still prefer a car so they can explore? It seems that the number 3 bus is constantly full, which I assume makes Salt Lake an obvious choice (so are the number 2 lines). But what do I know. I just vote then sit back to watch the drama unfold.

The already controversal rail transit system does not including the University of Hawaii or the Airport? Come on!
This just doesn't pass the common sense test!

Knowing that something has to be done about the terrible traffic problem and car gas guzzling on our island, before this week I was all for th Rail, even though it never was coming near South Oahu.

Of course we all know that traffic is a breeze when school is out of session. I believed that when the rail goes to UH Manoa,it will not only help solve a traffic problem, but also help out the impossible parking problem at UH, which keeps the general public from participating in University activities.

It's shocking that the City Council did not include UH in the first stage of the transit route. But not to include the Airport either is truly an insult to all of us who live outside the Salt Lake district.

If the Councilman from this area can get the rail system diverted to his area because someone got 400 people to sign a petition one Saturday outside Safeway, give me one of those petitions and I'll get 1000 signatures to include Hawaii Kai! Okay, I won't do that. I won't be selfish. But then, I don't expect you to be either!

Please, City Leaders, pay attention: Cut out the politics and think about the common good for ALL the people of Oahu. Include UH AND the Airport or expect a BIG time revolt. Your decision on this route just doesn't pass the common sense test.

It seems that payoffs and corruption has prevailed by the Airport bus and taxi companies. To not serve the thousands of airport employees, not to mention millions of visitors, by the exclusion of an airport stop is NOT in the interest of reduced traffic and global warming...but only the lining the politician's pockets with green!

But what does logic or reason have to do with the choice? I submit that the route was decided in a wrestling match. It had that feel to it. Whoever was politically stronger could win their choice of train routes.

I've watched this dance since I arrived in 1968,
so I'm not holding my breath that this will actually happen. As for not going thru the airport, the route doesn't go to Waikiki anaway,so
it wouldn't do much for tourists anyway. And if the airport, Waikiki and UH aren't on the route,it's just another way to waste your $$. People are not going to get out of their cars-period.

This whole transit thing is just going to run the city broke. Why would you design a rail system that did not include stops at UH Manoa or the airport? Being that both of these locations are pretty much the only spots on the entire island that would actually guarantee riders. No other locations can boast more than 20,000 people visiting each day. We can count on students and travelers to use this rail system to it fullest potential. I know I find comfort knowing that if a student has a family emergency, he or she can walk from class to the rail, from the rail to the airplane with no problems of city and town traffic.
This will turn into another H3, and all the infrastructure and materials used in the beginning will be outdated by the time the end is seen. The idea is good and there is definitely a need for it, but the idiots that are upfront on this one are going to be criticized for years. As it always does, the backdoor deals and round about ways will all be revealed in the end. People have no idea how damn ugly this thing is going to be, and to think how hard the Outdoor circle and so many other groups have worked to clean up the scenery around the islands. Maybe they were just making room for this new cement skyline. If the city had more than half a brain they would already be proposing projects that could use the rail system to make money for the city. Believe it or not, people will now have “City cars,” why not operate the garages around the stops and make some money for this multi-billion dollar pay off. Maybe funding like this would pay for the additional track to the airport and UH.

Why bother to have the city or state build parking garages at the Diamondhead terminus when it will be at ALA MOANA! I can just see everyone parking there for the day as they ride the rail to wherever. Ala Moana Center management should be tearing their hair out over that one right about now....

I can't believe that the airport or UH is not served by this route! The Ala Moana Shopping center lobby and the councilman from Salt Lake have a lot of clout as opposed to scrapping the project altogether. Ala Moana? The center itself are private lands, which leads me to believe that the Ala Moana Shopping Center lobby was heavy, and of course we know that this would have been scrapped if the Salt Lake vote wasn't on board. Hopefully they will eventually extend the train to the airport and UH, but until then have fun with the crappy traffic as always!

If any citizen votes (again) for these council members to stay on the council in the next election...then we deserve to be screwed.

With the exception of Dijou and Marshall, they should all get the political boot. If they are still in after the next election (and I'll bet anyone, most of them will indeed be), than we as taxpayers deserve our own bashing.

It ain't the council members fault...it's YOU...if you voted for these baboozas (and Mufi too!).

Comment from: Former Hawaii Kai resident [Visitor]
I've always thought that there should be some form of mass transit in Hawaii, even before I moved to New York. With so much residential activity outside of Honolulu, and so much business activity inside the city, the traffic problem could not possibly improve unless business activity decentralized (and the choice for the convention center's location seemed to signal that this might never change). The morning and late afternoon traffic flowing in and out of the city is terrible because the city's highways were not built with the capacity to handle today's traffic needs. And of course, attempts to "add" capacity via the "zipper" and the car pool lanes have only moderately helped the situation.

If new residential construction continues to be added outside of Honolulu, without corresponding business decentralization, the traffic situation will only get worse. Ideally, everyone living in Salt Lake, Waikele, Waianae, etc could go to work closer to their residential communities. But this isn't the case, and the mass transit system seems to be the only way to add "capacity" to the existing transportation system.

My friends and family that still live in Hawaii tell me that the mass transit system will never work because everyone is accustomed to driving. This is true. But let's think ahead for a few seconds. Let's imagine that the traffic situation continues to worsen and that there exists a breaking point where Hawaii residents can willingly leave behind their habit of driving cars. When that time comes, the mass transit system (if it follows its current track) will be there. However, if the investment is not made ahead of time, the breaking point will come and Hawaii residents may wonder why nothing was done to prepare for such a situation.

Ultimately, the current traffic situation is a result of historically poor city/business/new construction planning. Though the mass transit system presents a significant change to Hawaii's future, it seems to be the best solution. As significant and expensive as this system will be, council members need to realize that their decisions in this process cannot show the slightest sign of political taint because the system was not favored by most residents from the very beginning. Residents will only begin to agree with the new transit system if they trust that it is truly a solution for the existing problem, which I believe everyone will then be happy with.
