Brennan set to play; busy Lane; Today's video; Vegas blog party/game pics

Colt Brennan today said he should be ready to play in Saturday's game.
Brennan, who has a sprained right ankle, was on crutches, with his right foot in a padded brace.
Againt UNLV, Brennan took a shot of Marcaine, a pain-reliever. He said he wants to play this week without taking a pain-killing shot.

More than 31,000 tickets have been issued for Saturday's game, UH is reporting.

Here's today's video on Colt, June and Tyler:

Malcolm Lane has now emerged as the top backup at both wideout positions.
Lane, a sophomore who had only played right wideout, yesterday practiced at left wideout as a replacement for Jason Rivers, who is suffering from lower-back pain. Rivers was on the sidelines with an ice pack in the closing minutes of Saturday's 49-14 victory over UNLV. He did not practice yesterday. He is not considered to be injured, and will play Saturday against Charleston Southern.
In the meantime, Lane was allowed to take reps at left wideout. The coaches believe Lane deserves more playing time, which is why he was elevated to No. 2 at left wideout.
He also is expcted to be crafted a larger role at right wideout, where C.J. Hawthorne started the first three games.

Good Morning Tsaikos!

I listened to Call the Coach last night and heard Coach Jones say that Colt has to learn to play through injuries if he wants to be successful in the pros. Sounds true but I just hope he has enough time to heal it so it doesn't become a factor against him when draft evaluation time comes early next year. Anyway, gotta go to work. Have a good day everyone.

Losthawaiian- You and and everyone in our Tsaiko Tsection are most welcome.

The signs couldn't have been possible were it not for the help and assistance of a good braddah, Wally, from my workplace. He worked some serious last minute overtime to silk screen those signs.

Wally's like many of our old-time UH fans. He quietly wears his Warrior pride on the inside.

ST how far down on the depth chart is Rick Taylor?
Permalink 09/19/07 @ 06:15

He's with the scout team at the moment.
Rick's a tough, good player who has the misfortune of playing in the same era as Davone Bess, Ryan Grice-Mulins and Michael Washington. Even Aaron Bain has difficulty getting playing time.
But if Rick works at it, his time will come.

thanks for the signs, will make great souvenir and for memories. Even the wife had a great time with the Tsaikos and our house guests from HI.
She's not a FB fan not knowing the game and being from Canada, but still enjoyed the experience. Nothing like being there rather than watching the game on TV. Sorry I didn't have a chance to meet and talk to others but lurker- Paul from El Segundo, Hannah, and Col. Joe, enjoyed sitting with you at Makino and behind you at the game. Noni, sorry you didn't sell your extra tickets- but I'm glad I gave you the Tsaiko sign and pompoms for 'making memories'

Good Morning Tsaikos!

My friend just sent me a link from a blog on the OC Register website. Here is what was posted: Colt Brennan - Class Act

As some of you know, my older son received a scholarship to play offensive line for the University of Hawaii. He is a first year freshman who is redshirting this season. He met Colt Brennan during his recruiting trip back in January and got to know Colt a little better during the summer as the coaches brought my son in early for summer school and summer training. My son has stated on a few ocassions that Colt is a cool - down to earth guy.

I also happen to have a younger son who is a junior at El Dorado HS. He was attempting to come back and play football after missing last season due to a broken leg and ankle injury. Unfortunately during this past summer, my younger son has developed a medical condition that has caused him to mysteriously loose conciousness on three different ocassions. He continues to go through cardio and neurological testing to see if we can find the reason for this condition. Obviously the doctors have prevented him from playing football, or any other sports and have actually suspended his drivers license as well.

Recently the University of Hawaii football team embarked on a twelve day road trip in which the Warriors played Louisiana Tech and UNLV. Due to the fact that my older son is redshirting, he did not travel with the team. In fact we flew him home for a quick four day visit while the team was on the road. Colt had heard that my older son was heading home for a quick visit and was also aware of my younger son's recent medical challenges. On the last day of practice before their team left for the road trip, Colt asked my older son to stop by his locker after practice. Of course after practice he stopped by Colt's locker and Colt handed my son a "Colt for Heisman" t-shirt that is the hottest item and toughest item to get on Oahu these days. Colt told my son that the shirt was for his younger brother and to tell him that Colt wished him luck in getting better.

I appreciate this gracious gesture of Colt Brennan. I am very impressed that a young man who has the eyes of the college football world on him would have the humility and take the time to acknowledge a redshirt freshman o-lineman and reach out to show he cared about his kid brother who he hasn't even met. In my eyes this speaks volumes regarding the character of Colt and also speaks volumes about the parents who raised him.

Now you know why I will continue to be a champion for this young man to be considered for the Heisman. Best of luck to Colt and his teammates in their quest to run the table and rock the world!!!

I should have taken a few of the extras while in Vegas. It was great talking to you at the game and the ride back to Makinos. You are one talented hombre. Also, your wife is a sweetheart.

Ronnie - thanks for sharing that story. I bet Colt does a lot of those types of things that we don't hear about.

Garret - I thought this week's game was on ESPN Gameplan. I guess I'll get the Hawaiian Tel feed again. Thanks!

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer has some info for the CSU game. Looks like CSU has lost to 2 I-AA teams and their win in their last game was over a D-II team.

As for the Buccaneers, a team that operates in the Big South Conference at the Football Championship Subdivision level, they lost their first two outings of 2007 against The Citadel and Wofford. Last Saturday, the team suited up against Johnson C. Smith University, a Division II foe, and dismissed the Golden Bulls in a 44-20 decision in South Carolina. The remaining CSU schedule for this season shows opponents like North Greenville, Savannah State and Presbyterian remaining.

Needless to say, this is the first-ever meeting between these two schools on the gridiron.

Two other things stood out to me in the article. I didn't realize that the D-II team ran for 193 yards vs. CSU on Saturday...maybe LWJ, KP, and Farmer will be able to get more running reps in the game.

The other thing that surprised me:

Although it may not fall under the umbrella of defense, the fact that the Warriors are ranked first in the country in net punting with an average of 44 yards per effort makes it that much easier on the defense to keep opponents out of scoring position.

NO. 19 HAWAII WARRIORS (3-0). The Warriors crushed MWC cellar-dwellers UNLV, 49-14, despite Colt Brennan being held to fewer than 300 yards passing and "only" two TD tosses. It was the first time in 14 games that Brennan had passed for under 300 yards. The win earned the only BCS buster left (except perhaps Tulsa if it can upset Oklahoma this week) a five-spot increase in the writers' poll. It should be very interesting to see how this week's patsy visiting team, D-IAA Charleston (1-2), will affect Hawaii in the polls. Everyone expects something like 77-0, so anything less will be a huge letdown.

Morning all,

Terrible ain't it? That UH has to run up the score against lesser opponents just to maintain their ranking.

It's almost unsportsmanlike.

Somehow I don't see JJ doing that. I can see the team try to blank out CSU. But I can't see them trying to embarrass them more than necessary.

Rich2176- This past weekends' LV Tsaiko Fest could not have been possible were it not for the tremendous efforts put on by you and Vegas! Simply awesome! Big Mahalo!

A few people that I talked with said Vacations Hawaii Tailgate was bland. Many left and headed back to the casinos and waited there till their bus rides arrived.

And talk about talent, I've never invented a job that made money like you, Rich. I definitely need to keep in communique with you. Hopefully, some of that entrepreneurial spirit will rub off on me.

I'm glad you liked the signs. Funny story- I hand carried the signs with me. As we went through security in Honolulu, I suddenly heard the security guard behind the monitor yell, "WHAT? COLT FOR HEISMAN?!! YEEEAAHH!!!" He started to crack up. My wife leaned over the end of the conveyor counter and saw a transparent black and white version of the sign on the monitor. Wow! I'm amazed the ink print showed up so clearly through x-ray. I was thinking, being that it was paper, all of it should've been transparent. Apparently not. Spooky. Anyhow, the security crew were all cool and dearly wanted to go to the game.

Longdistance808:
I don't think the Mountain West is ready to expand, and as good as Boise State is, I don't think it would be the first choice. On the plus side it has a bowl, and it has been the site for NCAA basketball regionals.
But it has no television market.
And it needs to add some sports.
I think in the long run the MWC would want to expand to a bigger market.
Besides, Boise will have to stand in line. Hawai‘i and Fresno State have been knocking on that door for a while.
Now, if Boise State leaves, the WAC is in trouble. There aren't any available I-A schools in the West. The best hope would be for Portland State and Sacramento State to upgrade. But it would take years for the facilities to be acceptable.

COLT CAP update:

Okay, so I've found a supplier that will be able to customize Skullcaps or Surgical Caps for the Tsaikos. Here are the challenges:

1- Since I do not currently live in Hawai'i, distribution would be difficult (and expensive). If someone volunteers, I could make the order and ship the the caps to the volunteer for local distribution. The rest of us (displaced) fans could have them mailed for the cost of shipping from me.

2- The minumum order is 144 (yes, one-hundred-forty-four. "One Gross"), paid in advance because this is a customized order. The cost is just under $9 per cap. I could make the order if I had 120 pre-paid orders.

If someone in Hawai'i wants to volunteer, I could e-mail that person all the information, including the graphic of the Islands, and it could be taken from there...

He and his friends sat behind the UNLV student section. He described it as being able to watch a UH football game *and* a UFC fight at the same time.

I was pretty cool to run into someone else who was at the game. He's not going to be able to go to the SJSU game, but he and his friends are hoping to go to the Reno game.

I keep lurking so much that I forget to post something until it's too late, but did anyone notice number 8 for UNLV. He was all over Rivers for most of the game. On TV on at least 3 occaisions, I saw him tackle Rivers and then put his knee right in River's chest while he was on the ground then standing up while pushing that knee down into Rivers. Just wondering if that was part of the reason he was sidelined.

Off-Topic moment:

If you haven't already seen the Hawaii Super Ferry episode on the National Geographic Channel, it's gonna be shown again Thursday morning. (10:00 am locally)

The program shows the construction and sea trials of the Super Ferry. Also, they show a similar ferry in use (don't remember the location) and it's importance to that location.

I missed most of that episode when it aired earlier this month on the National Geographic Channel. What I did see was really interesting.

The sad thing was after the episode ended, a message was shown stating that the Hawaii Super Ferry service was being suspended due to a decision by the Hawaii State Supreme Court (or something to that effect).

how many pieces of underwear do you go through in one week?

if you are at home, just go without since the muumuu will cover it up anyway.

think of all the money you would save.

Ronnie, thanks for posting that story about Colt's thoughtfulness. It goes hand in hand with the time he takes in talking with kids as he's signing autographs. He looks like he's having fun and genuinely appreciates them.

Pass on to Corbin, that WE all can't wait to see him hit the field in Warrior atire, and strut his stuff. He is the real Deal!. All those other schools lost out Big time with him, and We gained another Defensive top rate talent!

So Mav, wanna take a shot at the guest on L&L tonight?

I'm gonna shoot for Scott Chan of the Stadium Authority again. With the article in today's 'Tiser, maybe he can get on the tube and speak to the public.

Personally I'd love to see them get more student athletes from UH on there, but with their taping schedule early in the morning I can understand that it must be difficult.

With Rainbow Warrior basketball looming around the corner perhaps they should start targeting staff or some players to get on the show.

Good afternoon/evening Tsaikos-
What a fantastic time in Vegas...talk about the nicest people anyone would want to meet. Addahknowjoe is sooo nice that he didn't tell you all that I missed a turn getting us back to our hotels and almost drove to Utah. That's what happens when we take turns retelling favorite Booga-booga routines in the van, eh? Too funny. Just want to add my thanks to Rich, Las Vegas, UKU for the ti leaves, addahknowjoe for the signs (up above my desk at work now), and Ronnie for the pom-poms. Anyone doing a quick scan of the crowd at the game would have stopped at our section since we were the only ones waving things like, well, Tsaikos.

I also struggle w/ the reality of the outward appearance but I try to remember the credo of all nearly old futs, " The older I get, the better I was."
Along the same lines: not much I can do about the height (always get the comments like, "Wow, you tall fo' one Uchinanchu.")and the hairlessness (also sorta counter-genetic) but as far as the "wide-ness", I also go by that time tested saying, "A waist is a terrible thing to mind."

Good to hear Colt will play. I know their are concerns but Coaches and Colt know their business. 5-7 touchdowns, 500+ yards passing, 75% or above completions in 2 quarters of play as he will probably sit out the second half. Defense stingy on giving up yards to the pass or run and special team doing their thing. Resulting a lopsided win for the warriors. (If they play like I know they are capable of playing against any opponent.) Just my opinion.

Just an observation. Last week their were some key losses in the AP top 25 that was ranked higher than Hawaii. Louisville rank 9 fell to 18, UCLA 11 fell out of the 25, Nebraska 14 fell to 24, Georgia Tech 15 fell out of top 25, Arkansas 16 fell out of top 25, and Tennessee 22 fell out of top 25. Hawaii moved up 5 spots with a convincing win over UNLV. I believe it would help Hawaii ratings if the following teams fell to their opponents. Penn State loses to Michigan, South Carolina loses big to LSU, Alabama loses to Georgia, Texas A&M loses to Miami, Kentucky loses to Arkansas. Of course theirs others but those I think might be the more possible ones. And of course it would really help if the wac teams win some non conference games. And BSU and Washington wins all or most of their games except when they play Hawaii. I know its game to game thing. And the wac championship is the first goal but isn't it fun to know BCS bowl game is not only possiblity but could be a reality. And even if Hawaii is playing a Div 2a team this week. Didn't South Carolina 17 moved up to 12 by beating a div 2a team last week? (38-3)
Is it Saturday yet?

They didn't need to compress it all the way in.. just enough to make a sound when they carted the bottle up to the near or completely inebriated customer. Just get it close and let it fly!

And The Crrent Leader in the Clubhouse Is....
QB Colt Brennan, Sr, Hawaii is the the current leader in the heisman.
Last Week: 26 of 32 passes for 298 yards and two touchdowns, and nine carries for 19 yards and three touchdowns in the 49-14 win over UNLV
As long as Hawaii keeps winning and as long as Brennan keeps completing 77 percent of his passes and putting up huge numbers, he'll be the one everyone is gunning for. However, one slip-up game in a loss, and he's gunning just to be a finalist.

So, per Mr. Fiutak
Colt and Warriors are in race for the Heisman.

RE: Rivers vs Lane

Well at this point if I had my choice over the two, I think Rivers is a lock.

The few times I have seen Malcom Lane on the field, I have felt real good about what could come for him and for the team as well.

For a lack of better terms saying that there isn't too much of a drop off from Rivers to Lane was probably not the best way for me to put it.

So I apoligize for the misunderstanding.

To sum it all up, if Rivers is unable to play this game and God forbid the next, Malcom Lane will fill in just fine.

It's not how many tickets get sold.. it's how many didn't. As hot as the warriors are this season, it's not asking too much to see pre-game sales of 40+ thousand. After all, UNLV packed their house, and they had a miserable season.

James,

I agree that Lane is a very good player now, which is excellent especially considering he is a sophomore who didn't redshirt despite very little pre-UH experience. He could and should continue to progress and could eventually be as good or better than Rivers is now.

However, the issue was Lane now vs. Rivers now...and I believe Rivers knows the offense better, has better chemistry with Colt (since Rivers works with Colt while Lane works with Tyler), is harder to tackle (IMHO, Rivers plows over the most tacklers of any UH WR), and blocks better (Rivers sure is strong now!).

By the way, did you know that Rivers' season before last season had more catches than last season? That is amazing to me considering the monster game he had vs. ASU.

Made,

True, but with the talk of "sub-par" non conference talent on the schedule, one could also assume low ticket sales despite the hype.

With "low" meaning 31K at the final count.

Honestly I am surprised at the the turn out when UNC came to town, I won't be this Saturday.

If the trend continues, we could see a near to full on sell outs starting against New Mexico State all the way through the Washington game.

Provided the wins keep coming, then I don't even want to think what morale and the attendance will be like with the fragile state of mind most Hawaii football fans have been living with since 1995.

One loss and the recession hits again with no gratitude towards any of the accomplishments this team brought to Hawaii since 1999.

Jessie Williams from Austrailia commited to UH.

The switch to football, or gridiron as it is called in Queensland, for this Aussie was the right choice according to Jessie Williams, and the payoff may come in the form of a UH scholarship and an opportunity to play on the Warrior D.

Jessie Williams stands 6 5″, weighs 302 lbs, benches 320 lbs, leg presses 980 lbs and is only sixteen years old. He played basketball as a youth and moved well under the hoop.

The thing about Rivers is that he is fearless. The brotha is willing to catch the short passes over the middle and take the licking that follows all game long. That is definitely not a trait that all receivers have. JRiv was getting whacked in the UNLV game and I bet that had a lot to do with his back problems now. Love that guy.

not familiar with it at all. im sure if thats the case UH wouldn't violate such obvious rules like that. i believe Austrailia is an untapped market for recruiting. i mean we know they can hit since they have a similar sport such as rugby (they're tough as well). there's also polynesian ties too.

only problem is flying recruits over to visit campus. im sure its costing an arm and a leg to not only fly recruits to campus but flying coaches to recruit there. plus the 'home sickness' issues we get a lot from mainland kids.

all you need to do is click just 5 heisman hopefuls. i'm sure its obvious that you pick those that aren't ahead of colt because it factors that into the voting as well.

you CAN vote more than once by refreshing the link (it actually wont refresh but you'll get the idea.)

my vote is:

1. Colt Brennan
2. Jackson
3. Mike Hart
4. Dixon
5. Woodson

#2, 3, 4, & 5 are because they are at the bottom of the pile and this wont affect Colts chances.

Diesel,

1)Traveling expenses. Yes the recruitment budget at UH is around the 40K to 60K mark I believe? So I guess the philosophy must easily be, "if you're gonna go that far to get 'em, make sure they're worth it"!

2)Home sickness. I can understand that. It's easier for us who come from hear to say "hey it's Hawaii"! But unless we're in someone else shoes, nothing beats you home town no matter where you are from.

I'd like to think it's a bit of an easier transition for kids from neighboring polynesia, Austraila included.

I can only imagine that the climate must be a lot more tolerable here for many, but hopefully when this kid gets to Manoa he will fit right in and his fellow Warriors will make him feel right at "home".

Ok Jason Rivers is indeed the best of the two, but Mal would do just fine if in fact he needs to fill in for JR. I agree that he would be a lot better if he had the reps with Colt. If you listen to Colt, one reason his stats are so high is he has the receivers, the QB/WR combination depends on the number of reps they have with each other. "Timing"

Well it's in the witching hour here in the hills so I will up date the list tomorrow.

See you all on the flip side.

Yeah fo real eh? Sprains are no laughing matter, he's going to need that ankle to pivot to run and to be able to put his weight on it be perform 100%.

If I was JJ, I'd bench him for the entire game on Saturday.

So I guess most fans can thank their luck stars I'm NOT JJ.

To add to my above post. The boys will have to hit to road AGAIN to Idaho next week.

If Brennan plays this Saturday and the pain flares up again... travelling isn't exactly the best way to "stay off your foot".

Idaho looks a bit tougher this year and A HEALTHY Colt Brennan is needed for ALL road games.

I'd take advantage of the fact that Colt is at home here and he really doesn't need to put extra strain on that ankle, crutches or no crutches.

Dang these athletes are stubborn! LOL!

One thing I'd like to point out is that Graunke is ALSO injured right now. He wouldn't even think about sitting out because he so badly wants to play...if Tyler takes one hit to his injured area we could see a lot of Funaki on Saturday. I actually would be happy for Inoke to get a lot of playing time, as he'll be needed next year as the #2 QB and he's gotten much less playing time than Graunke.

Kazz,

I really don't think that JJ would jeopardize his prized pupil in any way. So, I assume, if he plays, he's alright. He won't have to run as much against CHS.

Rivers/Lane comparisons: Raw talent wise, lane may be a little better, but sheer toughness, experience and game smarts, Rivers is way ahead. Against weaker teams there's not much of a drop off, but against tougher competition, the difference would clearly come out in favor of Rivers. Nevertheless, our future looks good with Lane, not to mention overall at the receiver position.

i had a 3rd degree sprain once that ended my ability to move forward in sports. i got it on the basketball court going for a block and landing a weird way. it actually got dislocated and my friend popped it back in on the court. it was brutal. dr said it was a freak accident and that ankles rarely get dislocated.

so knowing that Colt had a 1st or 2nd degree sprain, i highly doubt he'll even play the CSU game. i bet he has a hard time taking a bath.

Diesel,

you're right, it was the first game, and when Graunke came in he acted pretty hyper. That's probably how he ended up hurting himself. At the UNLV game he was still a little hyper, but settled down pretty good. He wants to do too much, he needs to just relax and have fun and he'll be fine.

Florida Ted,
JJ said after the UNC game that Graunke got his "bell rung" on the first scramble because he has too much Linebacker in him (his original position in HS) for his own good. That's why his play was sub-par per JJ.
And you're right that is because he's trying to do too much.

nevarainsinewaplains, diesel, and FloridaTed:

Graunke suffered his injury in the UNC game as several of you pointed out. However, you all seem to have missed the point in ST's article today where he mentioned Graunke aggravated the injury in the UNLV game. That means in each game he played (despite limited minutes) the same injured area got hurt...that isn't a good sign for him to try to play a whole game.

In the season opener, Graunke suffered swelling in his left (non-throwing) hand after being tackled. He said he aggravated the condition during the UNLV game.

"My hand is a little sore, but it'll be better by the end of the week," Graunke said.

Loved the article form the OC Register on Colt. Not surprising to me. Last year after a game I was walking out with Colt's dad. We got to talking and he said he and the whole family is just so appreciative of the reception Colt and the whole family have received from the people of Hawaii. Yeah, we get the hottest QB in the country and they are thankful to us. The acorndon't far far from the tree.

3-0 and this Saturday maybe 4-0 with a 52-7 win and a chance for Tyler and Enoki to toss a few TDs.

Questions about age eligibility for recruiting etc. and how it is different for international...

In Australia, our academic year runs the same as calendar year. Jesse is in Year 12 (High School Senior) and will graduate in November. Most Senior Students in the state of QLD turn 17 during their senior year, Jesse is just one of the younger of his class. In other states of Australia, most turn 18 in their senior year.

We are all very happy and proud that Jesse has accepted his UH offer and look forward to a long period of mutual interest between our club in Australia and the UH program. We have had the pleasure of his contribution on and off the field for the past 3 years, we look forward to him bringing the same to your program.

copied w/ out permission from the bus driver

no blame me if not funny:

A helicopter had to rescue 9 people from a sinking boat. They all grabbed onto a hanging rope from the chopper. Still over the ocean, a warning light is flashing. Chopper is in danger of crashing due to overloading. A message is yelled to the 9 people -(8 men and 1 woman). "One of you must sacrifice yourself, the chopper cannot carry all 9 of you or we'll all die!"

Everyone is tense as they cling to the rope. The woman says, "I am going to let go of the rope. I am the woman. I make the decisions and I am the most compassionate".

All 8 men clap enthusiastically...

Jason's story pt1

Jason is a cool kid, he gets good grades and helps his mom around the house.
He is an avid UH fan and someday will become a wonderful, caring teacher.
But Jason does have a few issues.

One of them is girls, oh he likes them, it's just that they scare him a little, this developed from the regular beatings administered by his older sister.
However, things are looking up, Jase has met maryann(e) a sweet petite (6-3"), peglegged young lady with five o'clock shadow.
They share a mutual love of homemade brownies and cucumber kim-chee.
maryann(e) and Jason often stroll the grounds of KPT at night and have never been bothered.
When Jason tires, maryann(e) heaves Jase over her shoulder and carries him home.

Jason also has a oral fixation with sundubu and bulgogi, not the regular fixation, but the one where he HAS to correct everyone's pronounciation, not too bad in person, but weird when he tries to do it on the blog.

Jason doesn't drive, so he often takes the bus.
On entering the bus, Jase pays his fare, always in 2004 delaware dimes and takes his seat three rows behind the driver.
If someone is already sitting there, Jason will stand in the aisle and stare at the offending party until they move.
Jason is a great singer and often will break out in showtunes during the bus ride, favorites are selections frm "Porgy and Bess" and "Oklahoma".
Though never having played sports, Jason is very athletic and a capable dancer.
His specialty is the Haka and lately the Ha'a, which he performed while in line at Starbucks this morning.
Unfortunately, he burned his fingers when he spilled his triple soy latte (no caf) during the last rousing chorus of E Na Toa!

Night train Lane was one of the best, I remember watching him when he played with Detroit, he was a super hard hitter, whose signature hit – called the “Night Train Necktie” - caused the NFL to outlaw "head-hunting", or tackling near the head area. I have seen where he had knocked out some good running backs.

He earned his nickname "Night Train" from fellow teammate Tom Fears, who used to play the hit record of the same name repeatedly in the Rams’ locker room.

Article on CSU coming to Hawaii.

"This game really fits the new mission statement of our university," Mills said earlier this week as he prepared his club for the game against the Rainbow Warriors that kicks off at midnight EDT Saturday night. "Originally it was to be regionally recognized as a university that integrates faith with higher education. Now it's been altered to say nationally recognized, and this gives us a venue and an opportunity for some additional exposure."

Yes, this is another one of those small-college/big-college games that pad the win columns for the big schools and pay the bills at the small schools.

Charleston Southern's financial deal is not bad. Hawaii pays all the Bucs' expenses, including airfare, lodging and meals. CSU gets $150,000 on top of that.
Permalink 09/20/07 @ 04:30
"Like most FCS (formerly I-AA) programs, you aspire to have some FBS (formerly I-A) games on your schedule," Mills said. "The guarantee, the exposure and the opportunity for a major college experience for the young men within your program is tremendous."

It will also be an opportunity for the Buccaneers to see a part of the world they might not see otherwise.

"I actually hesitated about this game," said Mills, who knows just how good June Jones' Hawaii team can play. "But the thing that weighed things over in favor of this game was the fact that a couple of years ago we played a game at Howard University and after the game we stopped the team bus at the National Mall and let the young men get out and visit the Vietnam and World War II memorials.

"Later, a number of the players came to me and thanked me and I was shocked that although we are only eight hours away from our national capital, a good portion of our team had never been to Washington, D.C."

Most, no doubt, have not been to Hawaii either.

"We're going to take them to Pearl Harbor and we'll attend a luau on Friday night," Mills said.

That's the good news. The bad news is that Saturday night they'll also get a good look at Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan, a Heisman Trophy candidate.

"They're pretty good," Mills said in an understatement. "I kidded Herman Frazier, their athletic director, that the final thing I wanted in the contract was that Colt Brennan could only play two series in the game — one in the first half, one in the second half. If he played more than that he'd have to play for CSU."

He obviously didn't get that contractual nugget, so it's quite likely the Bucs could be in for a long evening in the islands. And yet, Mills sees it as a great challenge for Charleston Southern.

"Every man desires by innate nature a battle to fight and an adventure that involves risk taking," Mills said. "Through the game of sport, particularly football, those two opportunities are provided. This kind of game answers the question, on a play by play basis, do I have what it takes?"

I'm glad to see that Mat McBriar is still doing so well.

McBriar, a former University of Hawaii punter, leads the NFC in gross punting average at 47.0. He's kicked a 64-yarder this season, and last year's 48.2-yard gross average tied for fifth best in NFL history.

Congratulations to Jason Elam!

Garret -

Jesse Williams and Lachlan McIntyre visited during Fall practice. They paid their own way to see the Warriors for themselves. That was late August. Down Under Coach visited the blog that weekend.

Yeah Garret - Bbe like the triumphant William Wallace character in Braveheart – at least the triumphant warrior and leader in the first 3/4 of the movie. Let’s just go for a happier, more successful ending! You have all of our support and best wishes!

The professors mounted an interesting case against the BCS for monopolizing bowl revenues. The five BCS bowls will pay $17 million to each team that participates in its games in January, though the payout drops for a second team from a conference. The other 27 bowls generate a fraction of that total for their teams, making it tougher for "non-BCS" schools to compete in a number of ways.

"The power resides with a few competitors," Farnsworth said.

"Those schools in these conferences have not been allowed access to the big money that comes from major media conglomerates," Moore said.

That financial injury could give them standing in a federal court. To prove their case, however, they would have to prove the alleged monopoly gave BCS schools an advantage in recruiting and licensing revenues.

Article trying to figure out what has gone wrong for SJSU.

Dick Tomey has coached 27 games at San Jose State and lost 15 of them, but he has never had a loss like he did Saturday.

San Jose State 0, Stanford 37: The worst defeat of Tomey's tenure, and nothing comes close.

Nothing comes close because SJSU was supposed to be pretty good this season, maybe not nine-win good but possibly bowl-bid good.

Nothing comes close because it was Stanford, which had lost 14 of its previous 15 games.

Nothing comes close because the Spartans gained just 163 yards on a defense that yielded 624 the opening week.

But mostly, nothing comes close because of SJSU's woeful effort.

Garret - any concerns about Ashley Lelie? Two games already and no PT. I hope he can remain patient. Even when the Niners go w/ 4 wide-outs, they're using Vernon Davis or even Billy Bajema (TE), or a back as the 4th WR. Sopoaga and Ulbrich continued to contribute. Tough game at Pittsburgh this weekend.

Good Morning Tsaikos,

This is the best time of day, still dark and cool, kids still asleep, and a hot cup of coffee. And just two more days until the next game. If I may, I'd like to enter the contest: UH 77 CSU 14. Anybody following the story that BSU want to jump to the MWC? I hope they don't, we need them to keep our conference strong.
