The Warrior Beat
Stephen Tsai knows University of Hawai'i sports, down to the last decimal of a 40-yard dash. He's lived UH sports since 1987. Few reporters get the inside information like he does. What Tsai writes is a daily must read.

Day 11: Mouton cleared to join UH; videos of Mouton, Roberts, Colt

Cornerback Ryan Mouton has received clearance to join the Warriors.
"I'm so happy, said Mouton, a four-star cornerback from Blinn College. "It's been tough the past week and a half. But it was better to get everything cleared up now than later.
Mouton underwent medical tests today. He said he needs to fill out "more paperwork" before he will be allowed to practice. He said he hopes to practice tomorrow.
"I can't wait to get out there," Mouton said.
In accordance with NCAA rules, Mouton said, he cannot be in pads for his first two practices.
Here's Princess Leila's video interview with Mouton:

Here is a video of Colt Brennan interviewing a fellow Mater Dei alum Camron Carmona, a walk-on cornerback:
http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070813/VIDEO02/308140001

And here's a video of Calvin Roberts:

Today is the first day of full pads.
Except for switching from shorts to pants, I'm not exactly sure how full pads is different from practicing with shoulder pads.
9:07 a.m. — Calvin Roberts is practicing, and according to my co-workers who are much smarter, his footwork is outstanding.
Laupepa Letuli is not in pads. He's jogging on the soccer field, where the offense is practicing. He is recovering from a hamstring injury.
ESPN is shooting practice. More specifically, they're shooting Colt Brennan practice.

9:15 a.m. — Solomon Elimimian, who is sufferering from a tweaked hamstring, is attending practice, but is not in uniform. He's standing next to Blaze Soares, who is in uniform but not wearing pads. At least the third starting linebacker, Adam Leonard, is practicing.

9:20 a.m. — Cornerback Ryan Perry also isn't pracicing. He's walking around with a towel on his head.

9:23 a.m. — Defensive coordinator Greg McMackin is coaching the cornerbacks today. Today's practice corners are: Myron Newberry, Gerard Lewis, Calvin Roberts, JoPierre (never J.P.) Davis, Guyton Galdeira, Jakeem Hawkins and Keenan Jones. Newberry and Lewis are wearing long shorts over their pants.

9:54 a.m. — I spoke too soon (and too often, apparently).
Princess Leila reports that Adam Leonard has stopped practicing and has changed to regular clothes.

9:55 a.m. — Liz Chun reports KGMB's UH football special will air Aug. 31 at 9 p.m. It's entitled: "Season of Great Expectations."

10:22 a.m. — We're now watching the most one-sided drill, one-on-ones between a receiver and defensive back. The receiver gets to use the entire field. Myron Newberry, a very quick cornerback, had no chance against Jason Rivers. Not with Colt Brennan throwing the pass.
Wait. I take it back. Rivers runs a streak pattern, and Newberry leaps to break up the pass.

10:37 a.m. — Team drills have started. The No.1 offensive line is left tackle Keith AhSoon, left guard Clarence "Lafu" Tuioti-Mariner, center Aaron Kia, right guard Larry Sauafea and right tackle Keoni Steinhoff.
Center John Estes is in full pads, but not participating in this drill.

11:10 a.m. — Erik Pedersen just slammed Joe Avery in the loudest hit of training camp.

11:11 a.m. — Pedersen's hit still is riinging in our ears.

11:15 a.m. — I think I'm watching an NFL practice. Cameron Allen-Jones is aligned as a tight end, serving as lead blocker for Leon Wright-Jackson on a sweep.
Colt Brennan just threw a play-action pass. That play just doesn't seem fair to a defense.

Disclaimer: It was the last days of the offseason, when players were more concerned about speed (running 220s) than power (lifting 225 pounds).
Here are the top five in the 225-pound bench press:
1. R.J. Kiesel Kauhani, linebacker — 40 reps (37 in the spring)
2. Brad Kalilimoku, linebacker — 39 reps (30 in spring)
3. David Veikune, defensive lineman — 33
4. Aaron Bain, slotback — 30 (29 in spring)
5. Karl Noa, defensive end — 29 (25 in spring)
Observations: The top two are coached by Cal Lee ... Four improved their marks from last spring ... Four are defensive players.
(I just realized my "observations" were duh, like when a basketball announcer says a four-point lead is a "two-possession game." I wish those brainiacs would tell us how many possessions are needed where there's a 26-point lead. But I digress.)

* * *

Defensive coordinator Greg McMackin said safety B.J. Fruean has the potential to be a playmaker. McMackin likened Fruean to Benny Blades.
Fruean, who weighs 230, said he needs to lose about five pounds.
He also said he never heard of Benny Blades.

Before there were mouthy know-it-all sportswriters writing blogs, there were humble and intelligent fans attending practices and sharing their observations and UH pictures with other fans. They did it on their own time — and dime — and, most of all, for the love of all things UH. They had online names like Isleboy and Nelson O and BowStock, and they spawned Web sites such as sportshawaii.com and rainbowsportsnetwork.com (now warriorsportsnetwork.com). And they broke stories — on recruiting, on injuries, etc. One of the pioneers was BigWave96744, who still spends his free time providing biographies of UH players culled from news reports and personal observations. Here's BigWave's autobiography:
Name: BigWave96744
Number: #1
Class: Senior
Position: SB
HT/WT: 6’ 0’’ / 225 lbs

College: UH Manoa, BS in ICS

Prep: CASO, I mean Castle High. Older and way less smarter than Garrett

Personal: Married to BigWaveWifey, One son (LittleWave), and one more in the forecast. Or as Guy Hagi would say, “Swell is coming in a few weeks”. In fact the way the summer has been going, NewWave will be here before any swell over 4 feet hits the South Shore

Fun Facts:
- #1 is my usual bball jersey number. It also represents the number of points per season, you can expect from me
- Entering my 4th year of Fatherhood, thus the Senior Class. No I’m not a Senior Citizen
- I had a dream that June would always see me at Practice. He told me I could walkon as a Slot Back if I completed the 220’s drills. With the team cheering me on I ran and ran and ran, and after completing one I puked and quit. So for now my position is “Sit Back” and watch from the Hill.
- I’m actually 5’4’’, 148 lbs but what’s few inches and pounds between friends
- UH Football fan since the 80’s watching Castle Boys Alvis Satele and Aui Fatisemanu. Season Ticket fan since June became coach.
- Forum Moderator of SportsHawaii.Com
- “Dave from Kaneohe” on KKEA and “BigWave” on KUMU
- Favorite teams: Hawaii (of course), Yankees, Dolphins, Sixers, North Carolina BBall, Florida St Football
- Very active at First Assembly of God, Honolulu

- Competed in the Hawaii Amateur Surfing Scene for 20 years (in the Kneeboard Division)
- 10 time State Champ, 2 time U.S. Champ, on 5 World Surfing Games Hawaiian Team (from 1994 – 2002) winning a Bronze Medal in ’96.
- Blessed to have ridden waves in Cali, Japan, Brazil, Portugal, and South Africa
- Longest Wave Ridden – Jefferey’s Bay, South Africa
- Safest Place to surf: Shikoku, Japan (Wallet on the dash, camera hanging on the mirror, boards on the roof, doors unlocked… Dodobou Nai)
- Scariest Place to surf: Durban, South Africa (Muggings and Car Jacking are a daily occurrence and 1 out of every 3 is said to have AIDS)
- Best Place to Surf: the 7 mile wonder stretch called, “THE NORTH SHORE”

Anyway, great write up b-dub! 5'4" ah? Is that a rivals.com 5'4" or a true 5'4"? Jus kidding bro. Always great to learn about these tsaikos. Hopefully I'll earn enough "first" to get one bio too. Long line though but I can wait. It's a long season. By the way....Good Morning HAWAII!!!

ST,

Big Wave is such a humble guy. I wish we had a photo from the last Blog Bash where he was in the center of our group, PridePeriod, DPK, myself and Mrs. Bulla, we were talking about how diplomatic we are when discussing issues. The issue at hand was the 'other site' that has had a section 'locked down' since our meeting....too many heated exchanges. That photo would have been classic.

Big Wave is a classy guy, and I know deep down inside he is a closet TSAIKO Warrior. haha

808 chef,

i like the comment "Is that a rivals.com 5'4" or a true 5'4" " haha, sometimes i find some of the athletes they list grow 4" in two months. when the college coaches see them, they ask the same thing, "what happened?" haha

there is a fudge factor, for a 1/2" sometimes, but you can't go from 5'9 to 6'1 in two months...impossible. dave is a true 5'4...he comes up to my lower chest......

From what I know, he completed work on an associate degree with an NCAA-qualifying GPA.

According to NFL.com, Dane was #3 RT on the depth chart, so he probably played in the late 3rd or 4th quarter of the Bengals' game.

NFL.com will update their depth charts later today I believe, so I'll check to see if there are any changes in the status of the Warriors.

Ikaika is going to get a LOT of reps this preseason because Detroit doesn't plan on using their starters much. Starting DE White will miss the first 2 preseason games due to injury, play 12 plays in the 3rd game, then sit out the 4th game.

Shawn: Are the Lions downplaying the status of Dewayne White. Is he practicing? When do they expect him back?

Tom Kowalski: No, the Lions aren't hiding anything. White has a groin injury and it's worse than originally believed. The plan is for White, along with Shaun Rogers and Dan Campbell, to get about a dozen snaps in the third preseason game against the Colts. Then those three will sit for the final preseason game.

Looks like Ikaika and BSU's Alexander are expected to get playing time this season:

Brian: Long time Lions fan here in Chicago. Other than CJ do any of the Lions rookies this year end up starters if there are no injuries at their position?

Tom Kowalski: I just don't see it. I think second-rounders Gerald Alexander and Ikaika Alama Francis will see playing time, but they won't start.
Permalink 08/13/07 @ 10:20
Comment from: Garret [Visitor] · http://blog.mlive.com/lionsinsider/
With White hurt and the other projected starting DE struggling, Detroit definitely would like Ikaika to be ready to play as soon as possible.

FourthN1: At what point will White replace Edwards at R DE if Kalimba continues to fail to get pressure on the passer ?

Tom Kowalski: If Edwards doesn't deliver -- and it's way too early to know that yet -- there are a couple of possibilities. Corey Smith might simply take over for Edwards or White could move to the right side and somebody -- Jared DeVries or Alama-Francis -- could play the left side.

Fruen is 230. That's too heavy for being a safety. Too slow. Maybe be should make him a linebacker. Problen is: he's always fighting to stay eligible. I wouldn't count on him right now. He's probably 3rd string right now anyway. But, I wish him luck and I hope he gets to play based on his merits and practice. Like a lot of these guys, I need to see them before I can do the "anoiting oil."

Aloha kakahiaka!

My apologies for missing Florida Ted and Al's blog spotlight.

FT is a modern day Johnny Appleseed of the world. Thanks FT for sharing your worldly adventures. We're forever thankful that your last ship ended in Hawaii!

Al - I remember going to the Honolulu Stadium to watch, mostly waking around and under the bleachers, Islander baseball and I remember the guy selling stuff in the stands, he would yell out, "heanuts, hopcorn"...Looks like you are a food connoisseur. So much years in the business! So what made you decide to have another child 9 years after the first? I guess that spark in your loins was/is still going strong!

As for the cattle call this Thursday, I don't know. We could go to one of the Tsaiko's stomping grounds. That Camellia place sounds interesting.

Bigwave - All right! There may be someone I can look straight in the eye! You've lead an exciting life going to all those surf spots and contests! I was just a garage surfer in my younger days. Congratulations on the upcoming little swell. As a part-time lurker I enjoyed your posts about UH recruits SH.com. Hope to meet you this Thursday @ UH practice.

jojo - wake up!

Wreck - Yeah, what's the deal on the smaller guys outlifting the bigger guys. Also, where are the O-linemen?

ST - great line up so far! Such a diverse group with the same buring passion of Warrior Football.

Al, Ted, Garrett, Homey, BigWave...good job guys!

Why do I picture homey wearing a hooded sweatshirt, baggy surf shorts, slippers, and Oakley's?

Ted - my dad was stationed in Lybia from 1964-1966 and used to see Captain Qadaffi (sp?) running around instilling fear in the Lybian soldiers. He was a total nut job even back then.

A-House - Prime is my favorite steak place in Vegas. My only gripe is the grossly jacked up prices on the wine list. Your son must be a great chef to work there. Congrats!

Would you explain the Okie defense alignment in the 4-3 defense for us non-technicians and laypeople.

I remember Coach McMackin using zone blitz schemes when he was here in '99. So, with four down linemen will the two ends drop back in pass coverage and the safeties or corners blitz? I thought I read somewhere there were six DBs in the Okie defense.

Gigi- It's a funny thing about the kast Hurricane. We were in Kaimuki and nothing really happened. But Waianae got clobbered! The main highway got washed out. Homes lost their roofs.

Just got through talking with my dad on the Big Island. Retired 5-0, he's helping with preparing for the hurricane in Ka'u. The civil defense called them for an update on the weather in Ka'u. he told them that's hard to say. The district alone is bigger than Oahu. Currently, parts of the district is raining, other parts are windy and still, other places are calm and overcast. He told them all three scenarios.

Mahalo to addahknowjoe and kailua boy for heads up on Flossie...

Back in '92, we prepared for Iniki by filling up our two bathtubs, pots, coolers, and tupperware, etc. Filled cars up with gas, got some spare cash, just in case, got necessary meds, propane tank filled, canned goods in plastic containers ready to go, and pots and pans in cardboard boxes, just in case. Bought a few large tarps and extra batteries too. It was quite an exercise but better safe than sorry...

But I guess everbody does it.

But in keeping positive and thinking about your question to ST about the Okie 4-3 deal, I too would like to get an explanation.

I believe what you briefly described about the outside LB's assuming pass coverage and the safeties blitzing and I thought to myself that the six LB's are used in a Dime package to prevent the pass eh?

But where the LB's go through all of this, I have no idea.

This feels really weird. I'm sitting here in Florida, in Hurricane alley and I'm watching a big bugger barreling down on my Islands. Everybody better take it serious. They haven't seen a Hurricane in Florida since we've arrived, even thogh they'd predicted 24 of them. I still remember Iniki. I'd volunteered to load Spielbergs private plane to send food etc. to remote areas on Kauai. They were filming Jurrassic Park then. His pilots worked right alongside us. I never saw him though.

Rich2176, interesting that your Dad was stationed in Lybia. I remember the US having a Fighter Base in Tripoli, with F-14s. Where I was in Tobruk, they had a British Army Base. They had the best clubs, but Tripoli had great Casinos. The first thing Ghaddafi ordered after he took over, was to close all the Clubs and burn all the alcohol. Then he threatened to attack the americans and british if they didn't leave. He had 4 F-14s, and the americans had 500. What completely shocked us was that the US and Brits actually left. We thought then that it was a stupid mistake. Same as when Reagan tucked tale and left Lebanon right after Hezbollah bombed the Marine barracks. That is taken as weakness by the extremists and totally encourages them. Many things could have been avoided, if we would have shown serious muscle back then. I was totally in favor of the Afghanistan and Irak action when it started. Arrogant Rumsfeld screwed up the whole thing by not listening to Gen. Shinseki, who wanted 300,000 soldiers. Oh well, I better stop now before I get carried away. Sorry guys, for the diarrea of the mouth.

Love these blogger bios. How cool is it having a big-time surfer in our midst? And one with a sense of humor, too.

Now, couldn't someone have come up with a better name for this hurricane. They can't have gone through the alphabet so many times that the next best available name was Flossie. I'm not sure how I'd feel if my house was wiped out by something named Flossie...

Remember when they sent us home early from Kaimuki Intermediate when Hurricane Iwa was on its way. Buddy Dave and I went straight to Kaimuki Cue...

Rich, BP-Oil was actually the company we worked for. They leased two of our overseas tugs, with crew and all, to handle their tankers and quickly kill any possible oil spills. One of my side jobs then was the on board diver. When our contracts ended , Nov. 69, nobody renewed, thanks to Ghaddafi. We drove with 5 arab taxis across the desert to Bengazi to catch a riggety plane back to Europe. That was some ride.....

Great news about Mouton, let's hope he catches on fast. He is the one I would really like to see on the field. Hopefully he's as good as advertised and learns the system real quick.

M Tsai - They rotate hurricane names depending on the region your are in. Many names go unused and some are retired. Hawaiian names are used based on when they form and the proximity to Hawaii. That being said, who the hell thought of Flossie?

My dreams of being a professional surfer was dashed when surfing at Sunset Beach I went over the falls not once, not twice, but 3 times. That was the longest I held my breath and still gulped down at least a six-pack of salt water.

Defeneses:
UH has three — regular, nickel and oky.
Regular is a 4-3.
Oky is really a 3-4, but the fourth linebacker sometimes is a safety or nickelback. Unlike Glanville's 3-4, which employed sout linemen, the oky uses speed linemen, like David Veikune and Victor Clore.

Homey, The Okie defense probably attributed to OU Coach Bud Wilkinson back in the late '50's. As with all coaches, Wilkinson knew that offense wins games and defense wins championships. To combat the popular Split-T offense in those days, Wilkinson invented the 5-2. The Okie Defense called for both inside line-backers to stack behind the nose guard and defensive tackle whenever the QB moved to either side, and then move to any bubbles left by the defensive linemen.

By stacking the LB's, the defense made it difficult for the OG's to block them or prevent them from clogging the running lanes used by the half-back on the dive. Once the dive began to fail gaining yardage, the option began faltering.

The Okie Defense also featured four secondary defenders. When the Split-T option showed, the four-man secondary rotated to the offensive point of attack. The defense, in essence, was able to get an additional defender across the center line and end up with more defenders than blockers, thus stopping the option. Notre Dame used this mirroring type of defensive strategy to beat Wilkinson at his own game and put an end to the Sooners' 48-game winning streak.

It's easy to be the big fish in the little pond. The real test - not the fake Heisman test - is what would happen if UH were to take on a real football team. For example, USC.

I guarantee you, Colt and gang would not put up the numbers they have been putting up against teams from the little pond.

Mike Tyson once said, anybody can put the hurt on somebody else and act like a big man. The real test is what will you do when you are the one getting pounded. That's when you see the real truth.

Same is true in the case of Hawaii and Colt.

Monday through Thursday, 7:00 to 9:00 in the morning.

During the last hurricane, people stayed at Radford cafeteria. David and I chose to remain at home. We were completely untouced by the hurricane. There was no wind or rain. Maybe, the same thing will happen this week.
I remember some wind and rain, but not much.

well, it's been raining all morning here in Foster Village. I turned off my water sprinkler. How is it where you are? Is it raining?
It started raining when I left the house this morning, so I grabbed an umbrella; never got to use it, just one big outburst of Mānoa mist near the end of practice.

Okay, now it's time to type up my recap of today's practice. It will be LONG.

Joe Namath said he would take care of the Colts and eveyrone laughed, but guess who had the last laugh. We will never know how good or bad Colt is against USC because no game is scheduled. So the best thing I can pass on to you is to keep quiet about Colt and let the chips fall wherever. 8:22 a.m. — Walking past Cooke Field, you can already hear the whistles blowing; I guess the players have begun stretching.

8:30 a.m. — Most of the players are stretching, the QBs are throwing short passes in the flats and shuffle passes to the RBs. Forester and Grasso are punting, and Kelly is kicking with a tee. Grice-Mullins, Hawthorne, Newberry, Washington, Bess, Lewis, and Bain are taking turns catching the punts.

8:35 a.m. — The team huddles up before going off to stations.

8:37 a.m. — The RBs are warming up with Suan. Reinebold has the punt and punt return teams; they practice punting on a short field for a bit, then they start practicing quick punts while backed along the goal line. Both punters are able to get the kicks off quick, as Reinebold emphasizes the quick step. The OL is with McKnight, while the QBs and WRs are across the way on the soccer field. Miano is with the punt team's gunners and the punt return team's corners, teaching them different techniques.

8:45 a.m. — The RBs are now warming up with their juke moves, and I gotta say, Laumoli is one big dude. Back to Miano, who is teaching "a very innovative technique" — I think he's telling the return corners that if the gunners get past the initial block and have a step, that instead of running with the gunner, that the corner should go back to set up for blocking ahead of the punt returner. He likens protecting Bess to protecting Brennan in the pocket.

8:50 a.m. — The RBs are now practicing punching technique and footwork. The OL has moved to hitting the sled, while the QBs are still throwing to the WRs out on the soccer field.

8:53 a.m. — The defense lines up in the 4-3, then practices rushing after the "QB," which is one of the coaches. The linemen pressure, the LBs and DBs play pass defense against ghosts.

8:56 a.m. — Lolotai tips a pass during the drill, which is intercepted by Adam Leonard. Soares is on the side, in jersey but not in pads.

8:59 a.m. — The RBs are now practicing punch technique from their knees. The OL moves to the soccer field, so I can't really see what they are doing. LBs are with Cal Lee, practicing their back-pedal technique. Miano is with the DBs, as he calls out for them to shuffle, strafe, shuffle, then to close on an imaginary receiver. He emphasises that the DBs should open at a 45° angle when strafing. The DL are working on pass rush drills; Reinebold yells for the players to work on the blocker's upfield shoulder.

9:04 a.m. — The LBs are now practicing pass defense. Watching the DBs with Miano, it's clear that Newberry is the most fluid of the bunch — he has amazing hips.

9:07 a.m. — Grasso and Forester take turns punting; while one punts, the other retrieves the ball, tosses it to Ingram, who snaps it back to the other, who is now positioned as the field goal holder. Neither punter looks very impressive. Meanwhile, the RBs continue working on technique stuff.

9:12 a.m. — The RBs move to drills with the OL, I assume blocking stuff. The LBs practice wrapping up. The DL is practicing on footwork and pass deflections. The DBs are practicing in a drill with two short defenders and one deep.

9:18 a.m. — Aww, Dave Reardon and Stephen Tsai are sharing the shade of a tree together. The DBs and LBs are separately going over technique things again.

9:23 a.m. — Some DBs — looks like those Stephen mentioned above — are with McMackin. I have a #39 that doesn't match the roster (it's not Avery or Reynolds); I guess that's Calvin Roberts, he's the only other guy on Stephen's list. McMackin is teaching technique on how to backpedal and jam receivers. At one point, he instructs, "If you don't need your bump, don't use it." The DEs and DTs are now separate, with Reinebold coaching the DEs, who are practicing drop backs (zone blitz package?). Can't see who's with the DTs, maybe Lumpkin? RBs are back to blocking technique, the LBs are practicing jamming receivers coming through their zone.

9:35 a.m. — The QBs and WRs move up to the football field; the first team QBs and WRs go against the scout team defense, while the first team LBs and DBs go against the scout team offense. The scout team offense seems to run the option a lot — something to look forward to on September 1? (Anybody know anything about Northern Colorado?)

9:40 a.m. — The crowd is trickling in; there might have been 20 people when I first came, now it's closer to 30. The OL and RBs are blocking against the DL.

9:44 a.m. — Are my eyes deceiving me? I see some OL and RBs on the soccer field as well; are they in two groups? Or maybe I saw something wrong. That looked like a #21 (Pilares) and #4 (Wright-Jackson) far, far away.

9:45 a.m. — We have an Okie sighting.

9:50 a.m. — Blaze may not be playing, but he is coaching some of the players.

9:52 a.m. — Is that Rainbow pants I see on Tyler Graunke? They are green, with rainbow stripes on the side. Nobody else has those pants on. They kinda look nice; retro uni night for homecoming has been suggested before.

9:55 a.m. — The DL are working on one-on-one technique, lots of swim moves and bull rushes.

10:00 a.m. — The full first team offense is up against the full scout defense, while the full first team defense is up against the full scout offense.

10:13 a.m. — Peoples has one play where he looks really, really fast on the scout team offense.

10:22 a.m. — Breaking back into groups. I see the OL in one, WRs and DBs in another. Bess is no longer in pads.

10:23 a.m. — Rivers pulls a double-move on Newberry that takes my breath away. Rivers has Newberry beat on the first move, then waits for Newberry to overplay the recovery before blasting by him for the completion.

10:27 a.m. — Rivers vs. Newberry II: Rivers runs a straight go down the field, Newberry stays on him step-for-step, deflecting the pass that comes. Even with the height difference, it would have needed to have been a perfect pass to be completed.

10:29 a.m. — The kickers are kicking some field goals.

10:34 a.m. — There's more around 50-60 people here now, not including those I might not be able to see that are in their cars. The team runs a scrimmage, with some things of note: Brennan checks left to Wright-Jackson, who shows good fluidity and burst in the run after. The next play, Brennan throws to Washington on a slant that looked just like Rivers' last TD in the Sheraton Hawaiʻi Bowl. Among lesser-played receivers who saw a few throws their way were Shaffer and Linkner.

10:50 a.m. — Just the QBs and WRs vs. the LBs and DBs, with the teams switching sides of the field, so the offense is advancing on the open side of the field. Of note: Brennan throws short to Hawthorne, who makes some nice yards after catch. Brennan throw deflected by Alexander, Salas drops the tip. Brennan to Grice-Mullins wide open deep on the left. Brennan to Bain deep over the middle seam. Graunke deflected by Paepule. Brennan to Avery where he's absolutely draped by a defender, but he makes the catch. The next play, Avery gets absolutely smacked on a play that elicits oohs from the entire gallery. Everyone knows, UH fans love big-hitting defense.

11:00 a.m. — While watching more of the drills, I overhear some of the safeties talking about a play that had just been run. The outside corner had man-to-man, while the safeties had cover two deep. The CB's man ran a corner, while another receiver ran a post, leaving the safety to make a decision concerning who to cover. The safeties agree that the safety should call the CB off on the man-to-man, so the safety covers the corner route while the CB covers the post.

11:13 a.m. — Time for a few running plays. Pilares had a good run down the middle, which is followed by a nice play-action fake with Wright-Jackson, but the throw is dropped by Lane. Pilares has another good run, now to the right, but then #42 (?) is caught behind the line. Graunke deep on a play-action to Lane, then a hand-off to Pilares to a loss on the left. Brennan on a straight pass play to Hawthorne, overthrown to the right. Brennan on a beautiful play action fake, the throw completed to Lane over the middle. A couple screens, a couple option reads for Graunke.

11:17 a.m. — Cameron Allen-Jones is spotted at TE.

11:27 a.m. — All pau.

Football Fan,

Oh really? If Hawaii played USC it wouldn't put up as many points as against say Idaho or Utah State? You don't say?

Thanks for your wonderful insight Captain Obvious.

BigWave,

All this time, I didn't know it was you until I read your bio today. Yes, I remember covering you at some of the surfing events a few years back. Never knew you were such a big UH fan.

For those who don't know, BigWave was the best kneeboard surfer in Hawaii for many years and one of the best in the world. Probably still is, although the kneeboard division has been phased out of competitions in recent years. I guess that's why I haven't seen you in some years. Hope you're still charging!

I forgot one thing that I didn't write down. So Stephen is sitting down in this chair of his, while some of the players are going over to get some water. Myron Newberry is right there, so Stephen starts thinking out loud, Why isn't Newberry in pads? Newberry glares at Stephen, then lifts the legs of his shorts to show him the pads underneath.

Oh, and Princess Leila was there today, beautiful as usual. She even said Hi to me, how cool was that. :-D

I thought I'd post this e-mail I got from UH, in case readers are headed to UH this week.

A female UH student reported to campus security that at about 9:55 am this morning, she was followed/stalked and harassed by a male suspect while she was walking on McCarthy Mall. When she became aware of the individual she started walking faster, and the suspect did the same thing. As she approached the grassey area adjacent to Kennedy Theater the suspect was a couple of feet away from her and he asked her for her name and phone number, telling her that he had been watching her and that she was pretty. She told him she had a boyfriend, he replied "what's wrong, you don't like sex?" She screamed for help and the suspect ran away towards Correa Road.

Suspect Description:

Age: Late 20s.
Height: 5' 10 to 6'00
Weight: 160 lb.
Build: Slim
Hair: Straight short black
Eyes: Brown
Complexion: Brown/dark
Witness described the suspect as being possibly: Indian or Pakistani Heritage. He was wearing a white button down long sleeved shirt, black slack pants and dress shoes.

Cameron reiterated that he wasn't happy with the blocking of the first half Saturday, but was satisfied with the corrections made at halftime.

Perhaps the best news Dolphins fans could've received Monday was that starting left tackle Vernon Carey participated in the practice after leaving Saturday's game late in the first quarter with a right knee injury. Cameron said after the game that the patella injury wasn't serious and it appears his diagnosis was correct. "He looked good to me," Cameron said. "Looked like he did all right today. He played today, he'll play [Thursday]."

Backup left tackle, rookie Julius Wilson, who filled in for Carey Saturday, was also taking some snaps with the first unit Monday.

Rex Hadnot is lining up with the first team, even though the depth chart lists him as a second-teamer.

Hadnot is lining up at RG. Mormino is watching the punt team practice its blocking, and on the other field Liwienski is lining up at LG next to Satale.

First team offense is now doing running drills from its own 4 yard line. Mormino at LG, Hadnot at RG.

Looks like the offensive tackles had trouble with Miami's DEs in practice.

Miami kept its starting line from Saturday intact on Monday. The line: Carey (LT), Drew Mormino (LG), Samson Satale ©, Rex Hadnot (RG), Anthony Alabi (RT).

• Tackle L.J. Shelton continued to work with the third team but made some blocks during running drills with Gibran Hamdan at quarterback.

• The first-team line had a long day going against Jason Taylor and Vonnie Holliday; Tight ends Justin Peelle and David Martin both had trouble hanging on to passes delivered by Trent Green.

Ikaika has a new blog up! Here is one paragraph:

“I don’t even have to talk to (fellow rookies to know how they’re feeling) – you can see it on their face. It’s pretty grueling going into something you don’t know in an area you don’t know. But you’ve just got to hang with it; you’ve got to stick with it. Because I’ll tell you what, it does get harder at times – it really does. Some days it doesn’t go as planned and you kind of get down on yourself but you’ve got to stick with it. You’ve got to try to stay positive no matter what happens and keep fighting.”

This statement from Detroit's coach kind of ties into Ikaika's blog entry today.

That said, training camp is still a grind.

“Every snap is a grind,” Marinelli said. “It’s a great way to teach the tools who want to teach, just playing one snap at a time.”

Marinelli said the players had to focus on the here and now – and not look at how long they had to go. The regular-season opener isn’t until Sept. 9.

“That’s what happens to rookies sometimes,” Marinelli said. “They get buried, saying, ‘God, we’ve got another six weeks of this.’ It buries you. Just play the snap. I coach that at night. Just play the snap, win the snap you’re in. All of the sudden, practice is over.”

DPK,

Here is an article about what you said about Vick's co-defendants making plea bargains.

The two remaining co-defendants in Michael Vick's federal dogfighting case on Monday scheduled hearings to enter plea agreements.

Purnell Peace, 35, of Virginia Beach, is set to appear in federal court in Richmond on Thursday and Quanis Phillips, 28, of Atlanta, on Friday.

Last month, another original co-defendant, Tony Taylor, pleaded guilty to his role in a dogfighting conspiracy he says was financed almost entirely by the Atlanta Falcons quarterback.

Taylor, 34, of Hampton, agreed to fully cooperate with the government in its prosecution of Vick, Peace and Phillips, who are accused of running an interstate dogfighting enterprise known as "Bad Newz Kennels" on Vick's property in rural Surry County.

I spent all of last night researching Silicon Valley hotels that would be good for kids...but today one of my best friends offered her house to my family, so I'll be staying with them in Palo Alto. I know in past SJSU games the UH Alumni Association or some other Hawaii organization had a huge tailgate. We could do that or we could meet up at a restaurant before the game. The game should run from 5pm to 9pm, so either we eat lunch at the game (I don't recommend Spartan Stadium food) or we eat beforehand.

About the criticism that Colt wouldn't throw for as many yards against USC as he would against less teams...that seems to have been accepted by some Warrior fans but is actually not necessarily true. In fact, if you look at the facts from 2006, it appears that Colt puts up as big or bigger numbers against the "big teams" as he does against WAC teams. One big factor to consider is that Colt often misses an entire quarter of the game because UH blows out lesser teams, while he is still throwing the ball late in games against tougher teams. That means that Colt has 33% more of the game to rack up stats.

Let us split 2006 into tough teams and lesser teams:
Tougher teams:
Alabama
Boise State
Nevada
Fresno State
San Jose State
Purdue
Oregon State
Arizona State

Lesser teams:
UNLV
Eastern Illinois
New Mexico State
Idaho
Utah State
Louisiana Tech

I’ll even make a category for top-tier teams:
Alabama
Boise State
Purdue
Oregon State
Arizona State

Let us compare Colt’s stats vs. lesser teams with his stats vs. the other categories. I’m going to round things to avoid decimal places, but I have this all in Excel if anyone wants the raw numbers. In fact, I’ll run different combinations of teams upon request.

Lesser teams: 25CMP / 36ATT / 365YDS / 71% CMP%

Tougher teams: 32CMP / 43ATT / 420YDS / 74% CMP%

Top-tier teams: 32CMP / 44ATT / 426YDS / 72% CMP%

The biggest difference in the stats is that Colt was sacked 3x more by tougher teams than by lesser teams, and almost 4x more by top-tier teams than by lesser teams. But for anyone to claim that Colt wouldn’t put up stats against tougher competition, they simply don’t have the facts to back them up.

Kazz-
Thank you for the invite. I rarely go to live UH events as I don't like the traffic, parking, crowds in stadium, long lines for food, beer, bathroom, etc., and I don't like having to sit next to loud, obnoxius drunks.

I prefer the comfort of watching from home or some other establishment, where there are no lines and only good, decent, well-mannered, people are allowed.

Now if USC or UCLA or Notre Dame were coming to town, I might make an exception. At this time, no one presently coming to town to play UH would bring enough excitement to justify, for me, putting up with all the negatives associated with going to a live UH sporting event.

Your extending the tailgate offer, however, despite my not being in agreement with the sentiment normally found here, puts you in a class by yourself: a class act.

I'm gonna call it a day a bit early at work here. Gotta hit up Walmart to see what I can stock up on, JUST IN CASE.

To the TSAIKOs on the Big Island, take care of yourselves and loved ones. I'm sure everything will be fine with a bit more rain and wind to come.

Everything will be ok.

Take care.

I'll check you all tomorrow.

Oh before I leave, in reply to Garret's post in the above regarding the comparison to a Mr. John David Booty...

Aren't the #'s pretty much the proof in the pudding?

I will always remember comparisons like that no matter what happens this season or the seasons to come.

Amazing, simply amazing.

The numbers cannot lie.

I'm now going to predict, with some confidence, that Nate will at least make Philly's practice squad. In fact, Philly is choosing between having 3 or 4 RBs on their active roster and Nate just moved up to #4 RB with the injury to Moats.

I feel horrible for Moats, he worked hard all offseason and did well (aside from the fumbles) in camp. However, injuries happen in the NFL and it is Nate's job to seize this opportunity. If Nate does not do well in practice and their next preseason game, Philly will call up Reno Mahe or some other player...but I figure Nate will at least get on the practice roster.

Ryan Moats, in a battle for a roster spot, fractured his left ankle and is likely gone for the year. Moats was on the roster bubble after an inconsistent training camp, but the depth at running back is tested now, and maybe the Eagles will recall a player like Reno Mahe, who can step right in and play and give the Eagles some insurance at running back and in the return game.

Kazz,

I thought that Colt-Booty comparison was interesting!

By the way, I went into the research assuming that what football fan and others here said was correct and that Colt had worse stats against better competition. I did remember that Colt sat out a ton of 4th quarters and was curious if that outweighed the tougher competition. The numbers surprised me, but in hindsight they make sense.

By the way, I'd like to say "Welcome" to all of the SH posters who have posted here. I actually lurked in SH at times for years before ST started this blog. There are good people there, like BigWave, Scott and Wyokie. I really appreciate all of the information that they provide.

I just never posted because I figured I didn't have much to contribute, since what I most appreciated was the recruiting info, the bios, and the practice reports...and I could add nothing in those areas. I also have to be careful about starting to post because as you see once I start I allocate some time to do it right.

I did read the thread about The Beast and there sure were some negative people there! But that doesn't mean that SH is a bad place, that was a pretty isolated incident on a very touchy issue.

DPK,

I agree that this was a twist, Nate battled all this time to try to get ahead of Moats in the depth chart and now Moats will probably miss the season. I also agree that if Nate makes at least the practice squad he'll be able to prove himself over time.

Nate's biggest problem is that he's so different that Philly's previous RBs who were more finesse-type backs. Hunt is like a compromise solution for Philly, he can fill the power back role because he's much bigger than their other RBs, but he's quicker and a lot smaller than Nate.

Nate now has a VERY good shot at the active roster! If Bloom proves himself capable of handling punt and kick returns (and he did a good job tonight), then Philly might have a roster spot for a 4th RB...and that could be Nate! Nate has to do well enough that Philly doesn't start looking around for another RB, but an RB coming from off the street wouldn't be as up-to-speed with Philly's system.

Thank you for the invite. I rarely go to live UH events as I don't like the traffic, parking, crowds in stadium, long lines for food, beer, bathroom, etc., and I don't like having to sit next to loud, obnoxius drunks.

Traffic is a pain and parking is tough if you want to drive in 45 minutes before kick off. As for the rest of it? For all intents and purposes, non-existent. What is your real agenda, "Football Fan"?

I prefer the comfort of watching from home or some other establishment, where there are no lines and only good, decent, well-mannered, people are allowed.

Great. You can watch all the USC, UCLA and Notre Dame games you want at home. That would explain why you know NOTHING about UH games. So the question becomes, why are you here?

Garrett - Great stats, interesting comparison with Booty. Like I've said before with time Colt is extremely deadly. And when our offense is in sync, there's multiple receivers open on every play. That's the reason no one wants to play us. You think those guys who say we have a cruise schedule don't already know this? HF should've anticipated this in lining up the schedule.

Interesting coincidence. BSU's former QB Zabransky will have his NFL debut in the same stadium that he played his last game...

The greatest moment of Jared Zabransky's college career took place at the University of Phoenix Stadium.

He left there a Boise State legend after helping orchestrate a thrilling, 43-42 overtime victory over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. Saturday, Zabransky will make his NFL debut against the Arizona Cardinals in that same stadium.

The undrafted rookie quarterback hopes to resurrect some of the magic he found there in January. ''It's interesting — the last game I played was there,'' Zabransky said. ''It's going to bring back some pretty fond memories, that's for sure. ''I think it's a good spot to move on in. I'll be in a good mindset when I get in there.''

Hill then went to Ashley Lelie for a six-yard pickup before the 49ers kept it on the ground with two more Clayton carries. His second attempt on 3rd and 1 was stopped for no gain, but on 4th and 1, Hill completed a pass to Williams for a 3-yard gain. Whitlock picked up 1-yard on the ground, before Hill again found Lelie, this time for a 20-yard completion at the Denver 8-yardline to end the quarter.

SH's HS forum is closed and locked down. It has been that way since July 15th, when the stuff about Ryan came to a head. SH shows that while it encourages spirited debate, it doesn't let any really bad stuff continue. BigWave was a lot of help in that matter. SH has a different style than the WB in some ways, but they showed their class in this situation. It's good to see their regulars here, this season should be a lot of fun for both blogs.

BTW I lurk at SH too sometimes, and I gotta tell ya they are hardcore stats and up close info there. I can barely hang here, so this is where I am. But I do like lurking there because they have great info. and pics.

A former UH player friend of mine made a great point about Ilaoa last week, when we were talking outside of the blog. He explained that Nate has the very special abilty to go east to west then north and south on one play. This is because of his past as a reciever and these last two years at RB. As he explained there aren't many backs who can do that very well and that Nate is exceptional at it. That made a lot of sense to me, and it does give Nate an edge with offenses like Philly. Their backs need to be good recivers as well as running backs. I hope Nate can showcase that this week, and that the Philly coaches appreciate it. It's going to be an ineresting opportunity for Nate. I am sure he can do it.

Remember all of the toys that had to be recalled recently? The story behind the story is interesting and sad.

The Chinese toy factory owner at the centre of the storm over lead-tainted Sesame Street figures has committed suicide, the state-run media reported today.

Zhang Shuhong, the boss of a major supplier to Mattel, hung himself at the weekend after his export licence was suspended and 1.5m products withdrawn because of safety fears about toys sold in the US, Britain and other parts of Europe.

He is the second high-profile fatality of a growing "Made in China" consumer safety scandal, following the execution last month of the former head of the food and drug watchdog.

In the US, almost a million items have been sent back by worried parents or taken off the shelves of Wal Mart and Toys 'R' Us. In the UK and Ireland, Mattel has issued a warning and offered refunds for the 94,000 items that have been shipped into the market since May.

The company has sent investigators to China to trace the extent and cause of the problem. After they identified Lida - also spelled Lee Der - as the main supplier of the tainted products, the government suspended the company's export licence.

Managers at the factory told the local media that the company would lose $30m as a result of the scandal. Zhang - a 50-year-old entrepreneur from Hong Kong - is said to have spent his last morning talking to some of the 5,000 employees, whose jobs are now in jeopardy.

The Southern Metropolitan Daily said Zhang felt betrayed by his closest friend, who owned the factory that supplied paint for the toys. Although advertised as lead-free, the pigment proved fake.

Hi folks. I've been busy updating my little Tsai-ko site and compiling the game survey stuff so I am just relaxing and reading today's stuff closer. I noticed a lot of you were thinner-skinned than usual today in raining of Football Fan's parade.

Then I realized you might be right... because today's person might not be the Football Fan we know and generally ignore. Don't know if ST wants to bother, but tracing his IP would verify this. ST once mentioned that Football Fan's IP originated on the mainland (possibly Boise)...and our old albatross fiend is often obscene and gets deleted.

Today's Football Fan indicates he lives here and sounds a lot like the con man back in Feb/Mar who came to stir the pot.

Anyway... what's for midnight snacks? Also, I saw an interesting stadium blanket/poncho combo at Sam's Club for around $22. In it's carrying configuration, it could be a seat pad too.

Why Computers sometimes crash --to be read aloud

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted at a very last resort,
and the access of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report.

If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash,
and the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash,
and your data is corrupted cause the index doesn't hash,
then your situation's hopeless and your system's gonna crash!

If the label on the cable on the table at your house,
says the network is connected to the button on your mouse,
but your packets want to tunnel to another protocol,
that's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall...

And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss,
so your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse;
then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang,
'cuz sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang.

When the copy on your floppy's getting sloppy in the disk,
and the macro code instructions is causing unnecessary risk,
then you'll have to flash the memory and
you'll want to RAM your ROM,
and then quickly turn off the computer and be sure to
tell your Mom!

Well, that certainly clears things up for me.
How about you?

Hawaiiroller -- very good on the blockquoting! Now the next technique to try is to start typing your comment immediately next to the end blockquote tag. This is because the blockquote automatically puts a carriage return (technically a "br/" break)...so if you press return twice before typing, you will actually get 3 blank lines instead of two.

No big thing... but it takes some practice because things will seem to run together until you post.

today,
my buddy pride asked me what i really thought about this year's team. now that i thought about it...

although we lost ikaika and mel. according to coach sungod, we will be even deeper and quicker. he felt we would have two and a half strings on the front four. and that the players will surprise everyone. he said these guys are perfect for the 4-3.

we lose peters, but, the committee of safeties led by patek will rise above. i am confident in texas duo and we are in good hands at cb especially now that we roberts and mouton in the house. we can rotate with fresh legs all day.

we know how good the lb's are.
i believe that the d boys are responding to coach mac. at least he knows their names and has the asst coaches doing a job this year.

weapons we have. slotbacks and wr's we got em. our second receivers are as good as anyone in the wac.

colt is colt. and graunke will light it up.

running backs. wow. i am drooling and can't wait to see lwj and pilares spin off the long ones. laumoli, farmer, cox will knock some heads. we actually, (again) have more depth.

its the oline that we gotta have game from. we lose three nfler's. herc and estes will probably end up in the nfl too. but, the rest will have to step up quick. this year's line is a lot smaller. as long as they can give colt 2-3 seconds we will do damage. they have a lot to prove. but, last year when they did play, these guys held their own. if they come around then we could go undefeated.

the keys to this year then, are two things.

one, can the oline step it up in a hurry?

two, will the adjustment to 4-3 be smooth?

three, is there someone to replace samson's vocal leadership? is it lafaele? herc? this may be the greatest intangible of the season.

...nuff said.

SteveM,

Your sister in law better move fast; I heard the Pride of Hawaii is getting lots of action so prices probably aren't going to drop. NCL is going to rename the ship Norwegian Jade and will sail in Europe and Mediterranean...I have no desire to go back to Med Sea for cruises;that flight from Honolulu to Heathrow is a killer; so for now I'm just planning to take vacation in Vegas and tie in Mexican Riviera cruise or do the inter-island cruise again.

Hey if you don't go first class, your children will ;-)

Still waiting, but bro might be too terrified yet. I was on the POH last November and saw the ESPN game with Oregon docked in Nawiliwili. Subject: The Bull

A man took his wife to the rodeo and one of the first exhibits
they stopped at was the breeding bulls.

They went up to the first pen and there was a sign attached
that read, "This bull mated 50 times last year."
The wife playfully nudged her husband in the ribs and said,
"He mated 50 times last year."

They walked to the second pen which had a sign attached
that read, "This bull mated 120 times last year."
The wife gave her husband a healthy jab and said, "That's
more than twice a week! You could learn a lot from him."

They walked to the third pen and it had a sign attached that
read, in capital letters, "This bull mated 365 times last
Year." The wife, so excited that her elbow then nearly broke her husband's ribs, said, "That's once a day. You could REALLY learn something from this one."

The husband looked at her and said, "Go over and ask him if
it was with the same cow."

NOTE: The husband's condition has been upgraded from critical to stable, and he is expected to make a full recovery. :-)

Gotta hand it to Larry Beil. He's fighting tooth and nail for Hawaii.

In the above link, click on the, "Who is this years Boise St" link. For Yahoo Sports, Larry talks extensively with coach Terry Bowden about Hawaii's realistic chances of running the table and making it to a BCS game. They also say TCU and BYU have that chance to be the next Boise St. Even Boise has a chance to repeat.

The one negative factor, (contrary to Hermans' belief) that the whole nation knows including Terry, is UH's weak schedule.

Good job braddah Beil.

Hope that everyone is safe in Hawaii. For the mainland folks, here is an update.

Public schools closed and Hawaiians were warned to stock up on food and water as Hurricane Flossie roared toward the state early Tuesday. As if the storm wasn't enough, an 5.3 magnitude earthquake jolted the Big Island of Hawaii overnight.

The eye of the Category 3 storm, with maximum sustained wind down slightly at 110 mph, was expected to pass less than 100 miles from the islands, lashing the shores with strong wind and up to 15 inches of rain, meteorologists said.

The National Weather Service placed the Big Island under a hurricane watch and a tropical storm warning. A flash flood watch was also issued for the island through Wednesday, with possible flash flooding in areas.

Just as preparations for the storm were under way, Hawaii got another scare: A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck about 25 miles south of Hilo. There were no reports of injuries or damage in the Monday night quake, although it did cause a small landslide, according to Tom Brown, a spokesman for Hawaii County Civil Defense.

Gary: My question is regarding Alama Francis, 5-0 or whatever they call him. I noticed several times that rather than rush the passer, he fell back into pass coverage, on one series he did that on every play. Is this his call to make, drop back rather than rush. Each time I saw it it seemed to me that a rush would have been wiser, he never made a play while dropping into coverage. Was he doing what he was supposed to or not. Hope that makes sense.

Tom Kowalski: First, they call him Five-oh (or 5-0 or whatever) because he's from Hawaii and it's a play on the old cop show -- Five-oh is easier than saying (and typing) Ikaika Alama-Francis. As far as those plays, I didn't see them all but, no, Francis doesn't make that call. It's a zone blitz and while Francis drops back into coverage, a linebacker is blitzing from another position. It's a way for the Lions to get pressure from an unpredictable position without giving up coverage in the short zones.
Permalink 08/14/07 @ 03:56
Comment from: Garret [Visitor]
I can't believe that fan would think that Ikaika would decide on his own to drop into pass coverage instead of rush the passer! That is common for zone blitzes, but no DE would voluntarily give up a chance to rush the passer...and no DE would break the defensive scheme on his own!
Permalink 08/14/07 @ 03:58
About who will make the Lions' roster...of course Ikaika will but I thought I'd pass this along anyway.
Defensive line: Rod Marinelli kept eight last season. Behind the starting four, Corey Smith and Langston Moore have been impressive role players, and second-round pick Ikaika Alama-Francis will make it. Jared DeVries is steady.

I would think that with a rookie C they would want to have the guards set next to Samson. Sadly, it doesn't appear that they keep changing their minds because they are happy with both options...it seems like Miami is unhappy with all of their non-Kendall options.

It appears that Chris Liwienski is splitting time with Drew Mormino for the starting left guard spot during Tuesday's practice.

Also noticed Anthony Alabi is working at left guard, playing next to Vernon Carey. Maybe it was an unbalanced line.

Team's doing 11-on-11 drills and Liwienski is indeed working with the starting unit at left guard.

Running back Ryan Moats continues to slog along under a dark cloud.

Moats went down with a gruesome-looking left ankle break with 4 minutes, 39 seconds left in the third quarter. His leg bent the wrong way when he was tackled on a run to the right side that lost 3 yards. Doctors placed an air cast on Moats, and he left the field on a cart. Coach Andy Reid said Moats' season most likely is over.

Moats, a third-round draft pick in 2005, has shown bursts of talent, but has never won the coaches' trust, because of fumbles and mistakes. That pattern continued the past couple of weeks at Lehigh, and it seemed Moats might have a tough time making the team. He needed a really strong preseason, which he now obviously won't get.

The DE the Titans drafted suffered a bad injury yesterday.

Titans rookie defensive end Jacob Ford suffered a left Achilles injury in a one-on-one pass rush drill early in Monday's practice and it didn't look good.

The sixth-round pick out of Central Arkansas was carted off the field and had trouble putting any weight on his left leg as he entered the building.

"It looks like he's injured his Achilles and we're evaluating him," Coach Jeff Fisher said.

The Titans are thin at defensive end and the only offseason move they made to address the position was drafting Ford.

At least Travis returned to practice so the Titans had the same number of DEs that they had been practicing with.
Several players who'd missed extensive practice time returned to work, including defensive end Travis LaBoy and tight end Jamie Petrowski.

I really wish that Hamilton would give Timmy a chance.

Simply put, the offence has to do better. A lot better. And in other news, today is Tuesday.

Seventeen points against anyone, let alone the depleted Eskimos, is not acceptable.

Despite lots of complaints out there in Cat-land, the game plan was fairly well-conceived. Lumsden might not have carried the ball enough - more about that later - but he was actually very active. His blocking was insightful and effective, and every time he even twitched, he took about five Eskies with him. Anticipating that the Eskimos would focus on Lumsden, the Cats spent much of the game going against the flow. That's how Maas rushed for nine more yards than Lumsden.

This is an offence that hasn't learned how to win. There has been plenty of evidence of that deficiency, but there were two subtle, and extremely damaging examples in Saturday's dying seconds.

With two minutes to go and second and 10 from the Edmonton 27, Maas completed a pass for seven yards to Jo Jo Walker. That forced a field goal bid rather than continuing a possible touchdown drive.

On the Ticats' second-last offensive play, the Cats were again second-and-10, and again completed a pass for only seven yards. That forced a do-or-die to Bauman on third down (which died on Omarr Morgan's clear interference) instead of purchasing a couple of plays' breathing room.

At crunch time, why were the receivers accepting shorter routes the defence gave them; and why was Maas throwing the ball to them under those circumstances?

Breakdown on how each D1A conference scheduled their nonconference games, and how each conference did in nonconference games.

Hawaii, a member of the WAC, has long benefited from an NCAA rule that allows (because of travel considerations) it to schedule an extra game and for any of its state-side opponents to schedule an extra game.

Hawaii could only find one Division I-A team (Washington) willing to journey to Honolulu to face the Warriors and quarterback Colt Brennan, a Heisman Trophy candidate. Hawaii had to schedule two I-AA teams and still wound up with just 12 games.

Of those, 88 will be against teams from other BCS conferences, 131 against I-A teams from non-BCS leagues and 40 will be against I-AA teams.

The five non-BCS conferences -- Mountain West, Conference USA, Western Athletic, Mid-American and Sun Belt -- will play 217 nonconference games in 2007. Of those, 123 will be against teams from BCS conferences (and the majority of those games will be home games for the BCS teams). I can't believe the 2 WRs from Louisville went around shooting people with a paintball gun! They sure got off light by their head coach.

After returning home from an Oct. 21 game at Syracuse, Long and Vaughn drove around downtown Louisville shooting a paintball rifle at people. One woman leaving a Halloween haunted house was hit in the shoulder and told police the paintball pellet left a deep bruise.

The players were arrested that night and charged with second-degree assault -- a felony. Cardinals fans could only wonder: What in the world were those guys thinking?

They were suspended one game and played sparingly the rest of the season. They said they were forced to do extra conditioning drills by then-coach Bobby Petrino, who also relegated them to scout-team duties and made them off limits to the media.

The charges were amended to misdemeanor assault, and Long and Vaughn entered a diversion program in which each performed 150 hours of community service.

TCU focuses on small towns in Texas for recruiting.

TCU's two-deep includes 11 players from 3A schools or smaller, more than any other Division I-A program in the state.

The small-town approach – TCU's roster represents 64 Texas burgs – isn't the only reason the Horned Frogs have averaged nine wins a year under Patterson and made an annual push for BCS recognition. But it's probably 60, even 70 percent.

And the talent? Texas Football ranked TCU's latest class just fifth among the state's 10 Division I-A schools. But it also ranked the 2002 class fifth, and look how that turned out. The magazine's five-year review reranked TCU second behind Texas.

If a similar review holds true in five years for the class of 2007, Frog fans should thank Texas' small towns, which produced more than a third of the latest class.

It is so sad that the measured adopted to help Katrina rebuilding is going to $1 mil+ condos built next to Alabama's stadium.

With large swaths of the Gulf Coast still in ruins from Hurricane Katrina, rich federal tax breaks designed to spur rebuilding are flowing hundreds of miles inland to investors who are buying up luxury condos near the University of Alabama’s football stadium.

About 10 condominium projects are going up in and around Tuscaloosa, and builders are asking up to $1 million for units with granite countertops, king-size bathtubs and Bama decor, including crimson couches and Bear Bryant wall art.

While many of the buyers are Crimson Tide alumni or ardent football fans not entitled to any special Katrina-related tax breaks, many others are real estate investors who are purchasing the condos with plans to rent them out.

And they intend to take full advantage of the generous tax benefits available to investors under the Gulf Opportunity Zone Act of 2005, or GO Zone, according to Associated Press interviews with buyers and real estate officials.

The GO Zone was drawn to include the Tuscaloosa area even though it is about 200 miles from the coast and got only heavy rain and scattered wind damage from Katrina.

Permalink 08/14/07 @ 05:09
“The GO Zone extends so damn far, but the people who need it the most can’t take advantage of it," said John Harral, a lawyer in hard-hit Gulfport, Miss.

“It is a joke," said Tuscaloosa developer Stan Pate, who has nevertheless used GO Zone tax breaks on projects that include a new hotel and a restaurant. “It was supposed to be about getting people ... to put housing in New Orleans, Louisiana, or Biloxi, Mississippi. It was not about condos in Tuscaloosa."

Locals say Tuscaloosa was included in the GO Zone through the efforts of Republican Sen. Richard Shelby, who is from Tuscaloosa, graduated from Alabama and sits on the powerful Appropriations Committee. But Shelby aides said Tuscaloosa made the cut because it was classified as a disaster area by the government after Katrina, not because of the senator’s influence.

Mayor Chipper McDermott of Pass Christian, Miss., yearns for a GO Zone boost in his hard-hit Gulf Coast town.

“Everybody here is fighting every day just to get the life back in their towns," he said. “We’re not looking at the rosebuds. We’re in the thorns."

On the storm-raked shores of Lake Pontchartrain in Slidell, Chad Mayo, a pawn shop operator whose business was flooded by Katrina, asked: “The GO Zone? What’s that? We’re in the dead zone."

Even this Alabama fan blog thinks this is shameful.

Republican Senator Richard Shelby, a resident of where?…Tuscaloosa, had the city added into the proposed disaster area. Aides to the senator said his position on the Appropriations Committee had nothing to do with Tuscaloosa’s inclusion (wink wink). Some people are quick to point out that there were evacuees from the storm that took up residence in T-town and that was why they were included. My question is this:

How many evacuees are going to purchase one of these condos worth on the low end $180,000 to on the high end $1,000,000?
