The Warrior Beat
Stephen Tsai knows University of Hawai'i sports, down to the last decimal of a 40-yard dash. He's lived UH sports since 1987. Few reporters get the inside information like he does. What Tsai writes is a daily must read.

Day 14: Pool day

Former UH wideout Ian Sample will be our guest at 2 p.m.
Sample is the author of the book, "Once a Warrior."
Please submit your questions.

* * *

It's Colt Brennan's birthday.

* * *

UH's pracice ended early with the annual pool day. To get the party started, Dan Kelly had to make a 40-yard field goal. He did to a wild celebration.

* * *

We're at practice.
We've decided to put Jason to work, so this is his live report:

We have homey, Da Punchbowl Kid, and James here, along with Stephen, Ferd, and Princess Leila. How embarrassing, being put to work like this...

8:32 a.m. - Blaze Soares is again in jersey and shorts, riding on the elliptical bike.

8:36 a.m. - Stations begin; returning punts are Ryan Grice-Mullins, Myron Newberry, Michael Washington, and Davone Bess. Reinebold is coaching the punt block vs. punt team, stressing getting the punts off quickly. At one point, it appeared that Ryan Mouton got in to block a kick. When coaching the gunners, Reinebold is stressing that they keep the returner "inside and in front."

8:51 a.m. - New stations are up. Linebackers are practicing different drills, such as backpedal and pursuit, react to the ball, wrap up and drive, and block shedding. At one point during the drills, Cal Lee stresses, "You don't want to turn your back to the quarterback." Defensive linemen are working on the same drills as last time, rip and pursue, footwork and ball recovery, swim moves and QB strip. Defensive backs are working on strafing, backpedaling, and reactions to deep passes.

9:22 a.m. - Watching the scout team offense go up against the first-team defense. On Monday, I saw quite a bit of option runs; today, lots of straight runs out of the strong-side I formation.

9:46 a.m. - Blaze Soares and Solomon Elimimian are seen walking off the field. ... The punt and punt return teams are up; everybody else is on the side. A few plays are fakes, but to me, it seems more like the fakes are to keep the punt return team on its toes, rather than to get the play perfected. The punters' punts are just dropping to the ground; Kelly is throwing "punts" to the receivers so they can practice their returns. The coaches are stressing blocking and pursuit.

10:11 a.m. - The offense is running a pass skeleton drill against the linebackers and defensive backs, while the linemen are working down on the other side of the field. homey makes a point - "Colt has an uncanny ability to see the defensive back with his back turned." The starting offensive line so far consists of Keith AhSoon, Hercules Satele, Aaron Kia, Lafu Tuioti-Mariner (then Larry Sauafea), and Keoni Steinhoff.

10:22 a.m. - Leon Wright-Jackson makes a really nice play, bursting through traffic and turning on another gear.

10:28 a.m. - Colt Brennan makes a beautiful throw to the left side of the field, throwing over Jason Rivers' left shoulder. Although Rivers and the defender looked over right shoulder, Rivers was able to make the adjustment to make a nice catch. ... With Cameron Allen-Jones at H-back, we see Bess and Grice-Mullins on one side, and Rivers as the single wideout on the other.

10:40 a.m. - Practice is over, and my time is pau. Sorry that there weren't more updates -- we had to battle showers (Stephen was desperate to save his computer) and the fact that we were having a good time chatting.

Here's a link to Princess Leila's video of the Warriors moving out of the dance studios:

It's too bad Gabe Tuata decided to relinquish a UH scholarship to attend a junior college in California. With his quickness, he would have been a nice fit in the Warriors' four-wide offense.
By participating in Pasadena City's training camp, his eligibility clock begins. Even though he is an NCAA academic qualifier, he will have to wait two seasons before playing for another NCAA Division I team.
At least Tuata, a grayshirt who would have joined UH in January, made his decision early. The Warriors can now use his scholarship on another player. David Farmer, Keenan Jones, Jason Laumoli, Dylan Linkner,Victor Clore, Jon Medeiros and Joe Avery would love to have a scholarship.

* * *

Cornerback Ryan Mouton is being given a shot to compete as a kick returner. Although he was not allowed to wear pads yesterday, he showed his quickness on a kick return.

* * *

Don't get antsy about the depth chart yet. The Warriors have been rotating players during the three-hour practices. Starting Monday, when they begin two-hour practices, the top-of-the-depth-chart players will receive all of the work.

As the saying goes, you only get one chance to make a first impression. But JoJo, who recently emerged as a visible blog participant, has impressed us with each infomative and entertaining post. She's smart, witty and, best of all, a diehard Warrior fan.
Juju offers this bio on sister Jojo:

"jojo is married to jeje with a daughter, lala, who is 10 going on 25. They recently acquired a new family member: a black kitten named mimi.
"She is the oldest of 3 kids; her sibs are juju (who fortunately/unfortunately works with stephen at the tiser) and kada (he's the black sheep, hence the absence of a cool “j” name).
"she lives in the "valley" as she calls it but hails from the windward side.
"contrary to popular belief she does not drive an acura ...anymore. it was her dream car, however, when she was attending kailua high (shoutout: east siiiiiide!), from which she grad in 1995. From there she went on to UH-Manoa. She loved it so much, she stayed for more than nine years to finally get her BArch. She hopes to return back to UH-Manoa to find out who the flashers are in the library and why the fried rice went from a big container to a small container.
"besides reading blogs all day and taking naps, she actually does some work, applying her degree by drawing pretty pictures of cream puffs, coffee bean and tea leaves and other food stuffs.
"She loves to eat, drink and be married. Her husband says that she has a gym addiction, but she refuses to go into rehab. If you can't find her at the gym, you can find her at your friendly neighborhood K-Bar singing her heart out to irritate the hostesses.
"She is an ardent warriors fan and hopes to see the rest of you tsaikos at the first game on sept. 1."

I think the o-line will be fine, now that Keoni Steinhoff is back at right tackle. He's a better fit there.
Keith AhSoon is a little undersized at left tackle, if 290 is considered undersized, but Tala Esera was about the same height, and he's in an NFL camp.

Stephen,

Do you know why Gabe Tuata is not coming to UH?If he was a qualifying recruit he could have started to train in january for the next season. Was the immediate playing time a factor?Or was it other reasons.I first thought he wasnt coming this season for academic reasons. Now i find out he did qualify and now doesnt want to come is very dissapointing. Also is he planning to come after Juco season.

well, gabe's situation is a done deal as soon as he stepped on to that jc practice field and participated. many of us can't understand why the decision was made or who made the decision for him. regardless, it is over.

unfortunately it seems, that there was a sense of urgency in the tuata household for him to get on the field as soon as possible.

for me, i trust june jones as to his wanting to grayshirt tuata to let him grow physically and to mature as a young man.

That bio was a little hard to follow, but what the heck, jojo for UH AD. I saw jeje and juju, but no jaja.

Too bad about Tuata. Any change on his best friend, the linemen was also going to attend UH? He was very talented, but hey, coming out of high school he's going to beat out Pilares or LWJ, I don't think so, and Farmer knows all the schemes and Laumoli looks like he can bring it, and hey, it's crowded back there. "Me first" is a problem. My prediction is he falls off the map. I see this as a huge step backward for him.

Before we appoint Mouton the return king, let's keep in mind he's the only one running around on fresh legs. Jobs aren't won that way.

That is too bad about Tuata. As I wrote on the "other" site, it's ultimately his decision to do what's best for him. He wants to play now and there's nothing wrong with that, even if it means going to jc. All we can do is support his decision and wish him the best. Much luck to Gabe!

Your words of wisdom with Focus with One game at at time is all that matters.
Let the outside media preach their predictions with pre - Heisman winners and possible bowl candidates that only include top SOS.

Hawaii needs to set their own goal of winning each game , take the WAC title, and stay healthy. That is the next realistic step of improvement for 2007.
It's concrete, there is no speculation, or computers involved.

OGG Duffer,

What down time? After the football season there is the recruiting season, which peaks when we get near signing day in February.

We also have all the combines and stuff for the Warriors who are going to the NFL. Last year was busy, but this year Colt will be an extremely high draft pick so there will be a TON of news all the way up to the draft.

After the draft there is the contract negotiation stuff, the minicamps, people earning jobs and making rosters, etc.

Plus, we get offseason reports on how the Warriors are doing. UH has also been offering more and more early scholarhips, so that really gives us stuff to talk about too.

Glad to hear Gabe Tuata has decided to move on. His talents were being wasted at UH. Have you seen this kid run? This was a Barry Sanders type back. Speed, strength, instincts. Waianae LB Kuwalu said this was the most gifted back he faced in his career. Kuwalu, as we all know, was defensive player of the year. Pilares has nothing on this kid. I'll let SC know you are available.

Gabe, go for it! Best of luck to you and your family.

Some of the keys to tonight's game are relevant here.

1. The offensive line must make significant forward progress. It was a positive sign that the line didn't have any false starts against Jacksonville, but opening up a running lane or two in the first half of the game would have been nice, don't you think. Let's start small and say the running game should average 3.4 yards a carry, and the line shouldn't allow more than three sacks. Remember people, baby steps, baby steps.

6. C Samson Satele must make his line calls quicker. The main criticism about this rookie from last Saturday's game was he didn't make the line calls quick enough. He's a newbie, and it was his first game, so that's understandable. But he puts his team in bad situations when he allows the play-clock to run down so far because it allows defensive linemen to get a good jump.

ct,

One of the first words that my older daughter could say was "Go Bows". I taught her that before bringing her to some UH games (football/basketball/volleyball) on the mainland. She couldn't say "Warriors" then, so I figured it was okay...back then she could say "Dada" but couldn't even say "Ma" or "Mama"!

I don't know why my daughter to say "Go Bows" before she could say "Mama"...but she enjoyed saying it at games when she was a little toddler.

Too bad for the Dolphins, it looks like the Jets don't want to let Kendall go.

Kendall was asked his thoughts on remaining with the club.

"Either the (contract) number will change or the situation (a return to the starting lineup), will change. I don't see them paying that kind of money ($1.7 million) for a backup.

"I've tried to separate as best I can the business from the emotions of it. I don't know what to say because I never considered that (remaining with the club) a strong possibility."

For all his heated rhetoric, Kendall has remained a professional. He played well in last Friday's preseason game and hasn't been a disruptive force on the team.

I like your enthusiasm Football Fan. Not sure I totally agree with you, but I like your enthusiasm. I do hope the best for Gabe. He is very talented. UH was never going to convert to a running team to better suit Gabe, but at UH Gabe might have been able to do something Barry Sanders never did -- play for a winner. I know the Lions made it into the playoffs a few times, but I don't recall them every winning a playoff game. Sanders was great, but one man alone can't fool 11 spirited guys enough to carry a team to a championship.

At any rate, like ST said, his practice means he's two years away from Div.I, and that is a long time, and a long way away from USC.

But I wish Gabe nothing but the best.

Hi Juju - thanks for the neat bio on Jojo - very interesting presentation!

On Tuata, I was really looking forward to seeing him play for UH - he would have been an outstanding slot back - however, wish him the best on his decision.

Guava - where are you? - miss your strong comments.

for HF - it's hard to forget and forgive especially when he continues to stumble and refuses to make things right - like ST said yesterday, 16 days to signing last team for 2008 season!

i watch all the university of hawaii sports and our teams are a hodge podge or mixed plate if you will:

men's sports:
football: was rainbows/bows, rainbow warriors, and now warriors.
baseball: rainbows/bows.
basketball: rainbows/bows and now rainbow warriors
golf: warriors
tennis: rainbow warriors
volleyball(m): warriors
swim/dive: rainbow warriors

women's sports:
apparently according to the uhathletics website all women sports are known as rainbow wahine. i thought that the volleyball team was known as the na wahine.

On the Gabe Tuata situation I don't think we should think that this is a backward move for the young man. If he stays here with the Warriors his chances of seeing a lot of playing time is not that good (look at all the talent we have right now and will have for the next few years)so his going to a school where he will more than likely start might be just what he needs. I for one wish him all the best with his football future.

Al,

It is confusing as heck, only if they could of just simplified it by having all kane sports as the WARRIORS and all Wahine sports as Rainbow Wahine...

I personally think it kind of adds a unique-ness to UH athletics is the sense that we all know what we're talking about when someone asks "u going to the 'Bows game tonight"?

We as a community don't exactly make the smoothest transitions into what's new or changes of what was (and still is) familiar.

Pomai, you might be right on Gabe. It just might be the stepping stone he needs to get to the big time, but of course he he isn't good enough to earn playing time with UH, what big time program is he good enough to play for? We'll have to "stay tuned." I think the tough thing for recruiters was not being able to measure his skills against a lot of D-I talent. His high school football was pretty remote, and that, combined with his size, probably made some scouts skeptical. That would be a great story if he proves them all wrong.

Warrior Dave - I think Maryanne got done shaving a little quicker than usual today.

Gigi - from Wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_flag

Gay pride

The rainbow flag, sometimes called 'the freedom flag', has been used as a symbol of gay and lesbian pride since the 1970s. The different colours symbolize diversity in the gay community, and the flag is often used as a symbol of gay pride in gay rights marches. It originated in the United States, but is now used around the world.

The rainbow flag was popularized as a symbol of gay pride and diversity by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker in 1978. As of 2006, it consists of six coloured stripes of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. It is most commonly flown with the red stripe on top, as the colours appear in a natural rainbow.

The bottom line is that the "rainbow" symbolizes inclusiveness, just like the name Oahu means "gathering place".

And the answer to David's question.

And for trivia's sake, I was indirectly involved in printing those Rainbow logo t-shirts, used to be in the silk screen supply business in another life long ago. Had soooo many orders that it had to be made into transfers to keep up with the demand (a customer of mine got the UH bid, one of the smaller t-shirt printers. From Ian's site:

by Ian Sample
is a tell all book about Warrior football. As it details the ins and outs of the 2006 season it tells a tale of what football is like behind the scenes -- from Academics to Groupie Girls, from Clubs to the Haka, it is in depth and personal so everyone knows where the truth...truly lies! But what people dont know is that people in power have very long arms. My book, a book based solely on truth has been edited and cut -- white washed to say the least. Although it still depicts truth, focusing on what it means to be a Warrior it lacks the nitty gritty and obscene. UH trustees quieted my voice and erased my words. But Alas, here it is. The missing scenes. The deleted chapters. The untold truths that no one wants you to know. Whatever consequences follow I'll meet them head on and they will rest upon my shoulders, but these words needed to be heard. So spread the word and enjoy!

Tsai introduced me to McMackin and a host of other who's who in the sports world. I also met Reinebold and Miano. I got to shake Colt's hand and wished him well.

More to follow...

Just back from the field and a great breakfast at Jack's afterward.

It turns out that homey is a buff lil tech stud, lean and cut with guns to boot. He's as funny in person as he is in here, and it was fun to put his face to his name. Way cool guy.

Our boy wonder, Jason was bloggin' like a little veterano, as cool as a cucumber. The guy could be a great coach or sportswriter someday, if he chose to.

The highlight of the practice was meeting "Lil Cam", Cameron Allen Jones' one year old son, and the nephew of C.J. Allen Jones. He's a handsome little devil, with the cutest smile you ever saw. He was taking in practice with his lovely mommy, Cam's girfriend Chantelle (sp?). They are here for one more week before heading back home to Maryland.
Meeting the two of them underscored for me just how many sacrifices some of these young men are willing to make in order to be Warriors. Lets honor and respect that by giving the Warriors as much support as possible this season. A special aloha to "Lil Cam"...

Another highlight was the run that LWJ had, wich Jason mentioned above. He has that kind of fluid, gliding stride seen in many of the great RBs of the past. It was chicken skin to see him run like that, and hints of the great things we will see from him in the future.

Humm..

This is what I posted on the WSN about Sample's book...
*********************
I don't know.

Part of me says good for Ian, I mean, now I guess being a writer is his career, BUT....

the other side of me REALLY, I mean REALLY feels that by posting the deleted chapters/pages/whatnot...he IS doing a great disservice to his (former) team...........

Could he have waited UNTILL all the current players that he played with graduate?.......YES!

NOW that would be classy....

BTW, I ain't buying his book...even with out his 'Juicy' parts taken out.......

what a sell out IMHO....and i'm not talking abot his possible book sales.
************************
So I guess my question to him would be why did he "Sell-out" his former team?

It's hard to tell if Ian holds a grudge against JJ, or UH in general...or what was the purpose of this tell-all book in the first place.

There are several instances where a code of silence shows respect to your fellow players. Some things just don't need to be aired out, but what the heck...It's America, the Warriors are hot, so why not capitalize.

Aloha Ian,

First off, I just want to say that while your book is entitled "Once A Warrior" you and those that came before will ALWAYS BE WARRIORS.

I want to get your insight to what you were thinking during that memorable play where Colt tossed you that pass at about the 35yd line and you weaved your way for a touchdown that gave us the lead against Purdue last year.

I wasn't able to attend that game and I remember vividly watching the replay the next morning and Jim Leahey calling it as it is: "Brennan short pass to Sample... Sample at the 20... Sample at the 15... Sample at the 10... TOUCHDOWN!!!".

Thanks,

I have to tell this:

Practice ended early today and as we (DPK, James, Jason, Mojo, and me) were leaving the practice complex a young fan dressed in Warrior T-shirt and a brand new football in hand asked us if this was where practice is. He was around 11 years old and he said he caught the bus from Waikele. All the players were gone and I could see a glimpse of sadness in his eyes until DPK told him that Colt is still on the field doing interviews. The boy quickly lit up and was full of joyness. DPK also told the boy that it was Colt's birthday. With that, the young one ran over to the practice field...I hope he got Colt's autograph.

Did I mention that Colt is one of the nicest persons you will ever meet? He makes time for complete strangers. COOL GUY!

Sometimes it's hard, when something that someone says is totally different than everything you see for yourself. You take your own picture, then combine it with the pictures of others to make a montage, but the more complex it gets, the more things seem out of place -- only you can't figure out what's wrong...

Okay, back to other news.

What an experience, getting to live blog today. I didn't want to, but Stephen made me. I'm his slave, so I guess I had to. I'm glad you all liked it; I'm glad I didn't have to type up as much as last time. Most of the drills were the same as on Monday, so I didn't bother to mention them.

BTW, that was a great thing with that kid today. He came all the way from Waikele, wondering if that was the place for UH football practice. As mentioned earlier, it was scheduled to go until 11:30, but it ended at 10:40 for whatever reason (maybe cause it's pool day). I do hope he was able to get Colt's autograph, though, he earned it.

And I don't think anybody mentioned it -- as we left the field, the four of us (DPK, James, homey, and myself) all shouted, "Go Warriors! Colt for Heisman! Happy birthday Colt!"

Breakfast at Jack's was good, those biscuits are delicious.

DPK and I were talking -- I get a $2,000 travel stipend with my scholarship, but it can only be used for educational purposes. He proposed that I get together with Stephen to develop an independent study where I go to Gainesville next week with the Advertiser crew, getting a student's perspective as a special to the Advertiser. While not a bad idea, I think I might just go to an undergrad symposium instead. :-p

Although there was one time when I wanted to be a sportswriter, no kidding. I think that's one of the subconscious reasons why I take all this research and reporting stuff so seriously; it's like living out another dream, only I don't get paid. Then again, I don't think Stephen gets paid much, either... :-D

Kinda like what Papa John's claims as their "best seat in the house". You know, that barricaded area in the North end zone at field level...

Yeah sure they got TV monitors, but are they really the best seats in the house.

I'm going to look for news about Miami's game now.
More important were the audibles Green called, with one leading to a 12-yard run by Ronnie Brown and another a 19-yard throw to tight end David Martin to convert a third down. Cameron likes that almost as much as he does the development of the Miami running game, which provided 126 yards to go with the Dolphins' 121 passing yards.

What we've seen in two weeks of exhibition games is a variety of supercharged practice-field scenarios, beginning with the basic question of whether rookie center Samson Satele can snap the ball to whoever is back there with any kind of consistency.

Part of me would want to go down on the field and interact with the guys, but part of me also realizes this -- it's hard enough to see what's going on when you're at the grass practice fields, you have to be on the hill to get a good view. But we could always give the pass to gigi, she wants to see the players' faces...
