The Warrior Beat
Stephen Tsai knows University of Hawai'i sports, down to the last decimal of a 40-yard dash. He's lived UH sports since 1987. Few reporters get the inside information like he does. What Tsai writes is a daily must read.

Day 15: Don't let Princess Leila go!

Princess Leila is the best videographer in our newsroom.
Her video reports of UH football practices receive the highest number of hits.
But she also has the soccer and Homegrown beats, and because of time conflicts, she is considering pursuing those instead of videoing UH football practices.
We don't want her to leave.
So tell her how much you want her to stay, and maybe she'll change her plans.

* * *

BigWave with the news:
According to a player, tomorrow's practice will be at Aloha Stadium.
It will be closed to the public.
June Jones confirms BigWave's scoop.
There also will be a scrimmage.

* * *

Leon Wright-Jackson was held out of this morning's practice while UH awaited his junior-college transcripts.
Those papers arrived. He is participated in the afternoon practice. He said everything is OK.

* * *

Here's the link to the latest video of kicker Dan Kelly and punter Tim Grasso.

* * *

We're at this morning's practice, sitting with Princess Leila and Robert Kekaula.
• We're also sitting with wideout Joe Avery, who is not in uniform. Avery said is awaiting clearance. (Update: Avery indeed received clearance and will rejoin the team for the afternoon practice.)
• Defensive tackle Siave Seti is being treated for what appears to be an ankle injury.
• Erik Pedersen, who is suffering from an injured right knee, is on the sideline.
• Viliami Nauahi said he has been cleared to join the Warriors.

* * *

Thanks again to Jason for providing play-by-play of yesterday's practice.
He did an outstanding job.
One tip from management: Close the laptop when it starts to rain.

* * *

And thanks to Ian Sample for participating in our chat yesterday.
He said additional questions may be sent to:
once_warrior@yahoo.com

* * *

It was quite interesting to see a couple of players still remain in the dance studios.

* * *

In defensive line meetings this year, Xs and Os will be taught in PG-13 language.
A $5 fine is being assessed every time coaches George Lumpkin or Jeff Reinebold say a curse word.
Reinebold's tab is $25.
Lumpkin has a clean abstract.

Hawaiianbod is proof that while you can leave Hawai‘i, Hawai‘i never really leaves you.
He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, as well as good humor. We're glad he agreed to join us on the blog . . . and return to Hawai‘i.
Please meet Hawaiianbod:

• In 1966, Hawaiianbod was brought into this WACky world. He was hatched in Honolulu at St. Francis Hospital to parents - dad of Portuguese and Cherokee Indian descent and mom of Kanaka Maolil and Chinese descent.
• Hawaiianbod grew up in God's country, Kahaluu, until migrating west to Aiea while still in his puberty years. He graduated from Aiea High in 1984 (same high school as the Tsaikos FAVORITE television news personality aka Joe "I've never met a mirror I didn't like" Moore).
• After high school, Hawaiianbod was unsure of his future so he attended community college part time and worked full time. One year later, Hawaiianbod decided his calling was attending college on the mainland. His first stop was Fresno, California. It was a cultural shock for an 18-year old mama's boy from Hawaii to land in the "arm pit" of California. Hawaiianbod attended Fresno City College where he played football for the Rams. He transferred to California State University of Fullerton, Hawaiianbod received his BA in Political Science,
• During the 10 years (1986-1995) he resided in California, Hawaiianbod lived in Northern California (Weed), Central California (Fresno), San Fernando Valley (Northridge), Los Angeles County (Long Beach, Downey, Wilmington), and Orange County (Anaheim, Brea, Fullerton, Yorba Linda).
• While in the Golden State, Hawaiianbod's support for UH never wavered. Since there were not many options to watch the home team, Hawaiianbod either waited eagerly by the mailbox for VHS tapes of the telecast, visit the nearest sports bar that had acquired the game, or if lucky watched at home if it was televised on ESPN or Fox Sports West..Hawaiianbod bleeds green and white, and black, and sometimes silver.
• Since moving back to Hawaii in 1995, Hawaiianbod has been employed by the City and County of Honolulu. First, he worked as a political appointee for Mayor Harris' administration and currently for Mayor Hanneman's administration.
• Hawaiianbod is a proud single parent of two beautiful and intelligent keiki. He is raising his 11-year old son, while his 9-year old daughter is residing in Gresham, Oregon with her mom. His son is quite the athlete and has potential to be a better football player than his good ole dad.
- Lastly, Hawaiianbod was honored and humbled when asked to submit a bio. After being a lurker for months, Hawaiianbod finally worked up the courage to come out of the darkness and post. The Tsaikos who post on the Warrior Beat have become a tight knit community where everyone feels like a part of the family (well, except for a select few hemorrhoids).

ST,
you can call us all you want, we're incorrigible, you know that. our only motivation is food, it used to be alcohol and girls, but we've settled for more stability.

the question is not whether you'll call, but whether we'll answer......haha.

being the fearless leader of the TSAIKOS (wouldn't i be proud for that nomenclature?) it is your duty to place the call of attendance out there, and to reward those who follow you blindly into battle.

ok, Leonidus....from the movie 300.....you're not, but you'd make a great actor in other movies.....

i throw that out to the poor huddled masses who read the blog daily:

Was the Aiea's teams in the 80's competitive like they are now?

When you went to FCC were there many local and Poly players then as they have now?

If it weren't for the family move, you could have went to CASO with Garrett, myself, and a few others over here.

Didn't Randy Oyama play Baseball for Aiea in the 80's

Good Morning Tsaikos! Happy Aloha Friday, and Happy Admissions/Statehood Day Hawaii! I hope all you state/city workers have a great holiday – maybe go to practice and see the Warriors in person!

Thanks H-bod for a very nice biography. I like the “third person” voice. I have a deep respect for single parents. It’s a tough job – and tremendous responsibility. You’re another “special person”, but “just a regular” Tsaiko!

Very nice bio from juju about jojo. Wow – that seems so long ago now. Jojo- you “fit in” with the Tsaiko’s – 100%!

A belated Happy Birthday to Colt and Tim Grasso! Colt – you’re the Man! We wish you all the best – including a sensational season, all wins, all fun, all total enjoyment w/ your fellow Warriors, coaches, students, fans, friends, and “adopted family”! Tim – Happy Birthday! This will sound funny – but I’m hoping you don’t get to kick many times – but boom those few that you do! Does that make sense?

Wow – I thought the hurricane missed the islands –but no, it arrived in the form of a collection of prose, and the subsequent flurry of emotions and vigorous discussion. Here’s my humble input. Everyone, please (re)watch Princess Leila’s video from the other day with Coach JR reminding the DL about the players and tradition they represent. “You HAVE TO LIVE UP TO WHAT’S COME BEFORE YOU!”… “You HAVE TO LIVE UP TO THAT! …”It’s so important that you understand, You HAVE TO HONOR THAT HISTORY BY THE WAY YOU PLAY THE GAME!” (okay, nuff said-)

BTW – Princess Leila has posted a new video on cb’s Ryan Mouton and Myron Newberry. As always – Excellent! Mahalo!

i like what JR is doing....you can't move forward if you don't know where you've been.... i wish more high schools would do that with the athletes....especially at Saint Louis....show them what it takes to be a winner, what price was paid for victory.....

hey bulla -

Just thinking out loud. Is there any chance you could get Ryan to write your bio for you? I think he would provide an awesome perspective of his doting dad! Maybe he could contribute a paragraph or two. I know, this would be a tremendous sacrifice - as I'm sure you have volumes and volumes of mythical, embellished, tales of grandeur and heroism to share. Nah, j/k – there’s no need for that! ;-)

Yeah! Congrats to Ryan, and to you!! Remember Chris Brown, Damien HS? Super strong, about the same build as Ryan. He bounced around from DE to LB. I can see da Beast at MLB - especially in the 4-3.

Bulla, lets get your priorities straight. #1 where do the Tsaiko's meet and eat before the game so I can come mooch?
#2 when I hijacked the Jeff Portnoy Show I picked St. Louis hands down to win tonite...so where do we eat and celebrate afterwards? Bob's Big Boy? #3 Can you please have Ryan flash me a shaka on the sideline everytime he is going to sack the QB, intercept the ball or pick up a fumble and run for a TD? #4 Chinatown, Costco, or Foodland kine lei for Ryan after the game? My son and several of his teammates are camping over the house tonite for their game vs. Mckinnley tommorow, and had planned to go cheer on their ILH brothers...I told them to stay home and cheer Damien on TV so they didn't get sick out there in the night air. My pics of tonites game will be on/in Scout.com, the North Shore News, the Samoa News...so Ryan should pop up somewhere by Monday, Tuesday in addition to the Tiser or SB. Best of luck to Ryan and Geordon for a great game...but most importantly I hope for all the kids coming out of such an epic battle healthy to play the rest of the season. Cheers, Barry

Quotes from the Miami game:

From head coach Cameron:

On the progress of the young offensive line: “We’ll have to look at the tape. The speed of the game still has them a little bit. All of Herm Edwards’ defenses are guys that are going to cover the guards. There are some big guys in there. Our style is a little different as our guards practice all week with nobody on them. They get in the game and (the Chiefs) have two guys like that. These are games where we can really grow. It’s great practice for us because we don’t get that look in practice.”

Two of Michael Vick's alleged cohorts in a grisly dogfighting case pleaded guilty Friday, and one said the Atlanta Falcons quarterback joined them in drowning and hanging dogs that underperformed.

With his NFL career in jeopardy and a superseding indictment in the works to add more charges, Vick and his lawyers have been talking with federal prosecutors about a possible plea agreement.

A statement signed by Phillips as part of his plea agreement said Vick participated in the execution of about eight dogs, some by drowning and hanging.

"Phillips agrees and stipulates that these dogs all died as a result of the collective efforts of Peace, Phillips and Vick," the statement said.

Phillips and Peace also backed Taylor's assertion that Vick was involved in gambling.

"The 'Bad Newz Kennels' operation and gambling monies were almost exclusively funded by Vick," statements by the two men say.

Thank you to Tombo for this link. From a recap of the Miami game.

As a whole, the O-line was decent. The unit outplayed the Chiefs' offensive line, for the most part, which is saying something when considering that Kansas City's includes Pro Bowler Brian Waters. Rookie center Samson Satele was the main standout. He has a real mean streak to go with his great strength and technique; Satele thoroughly dominated Chiefs defensive tackles James Reed and Ron Edwards. Vernon Carey looked pretty good against Allen, which is encouraging. The right side of the O-line struggled blocking Chiefs defensive end Tamba Hali a bit, but Hali is a very good player.

Cool bio Hawaiianbod. Everyone around here has got some really interesting stories about them.

Kid – Nice to hear someone think that folks born in 1966 are “youngsters”! Although I think the guys asking “What’s the Termite Palace?” are definitely the young’uns in the house.

Don’t know if anyone saw this AP voter’s sneak peek at his Top 25 preseason rankings.

15. Hawaii: The best bet to pull a Boise State, what with Colt Brennan at QB, all those receivers and Boise State visiting O’ahu.

Number 15 sounds pretty high to me, but I’ll take it just for the points that come along with it (11 points?). I do like his approach and justification for these rankings.

I take a different approach to the preseason poll. It’s not a ranking of the best teams right now. Who cares about the best team in the middle of August? My preseason ballot is a projection of how I think the teams will end up in January.

sandislandman,

As a defense contractor, we have to account for our hours and what we worked on for how long each day. If we go under 80 hours over a 2-week period we could get less money (but I'm always way over 80), if we go over 80 hours we don't get any extra. However, the time that is charged gets charged to different contracts, depending on what I worked on. Lunch gets charged to anyone...which is probably why he wanted to ask me stuff during lunch.

They look a lot better and more accurate to the real thing than the previous ones made by Russell Athletic with the green trim and the "H" logo exactly on the collar. $60.00 though. Heck I got one anyway.

Plus there's an array of other UH merch made by Nike as well. The prices for those didn't seem to jump that much though.

Hmm, closing practice, that's unusual.

Oh, I just remembered, there was one thing I forgot to mention when live blogging yesterday. Stephen wrote about Mana Lolotai -- from what I saw yesterday, he's the real deal at upback. He's big, strong and fast, one time getting around the corner on a punt fake. Not that I think they'll need to run fakes (again, I thought yesterday's fakes were more to keep the return team on its toes), but if they do, I think Lolotai can be a weapon. Anyways, another time he was the first man down to put a "hit" on the return man. Again, size, strength, and speed.

my parting words regarding yesterday's stuff...

what upset me was that it is just not the local style to go out and blast your team.

what the major consequence to me is that in the long run the "tell all sidebars" on the myspace website will really be more damaging to the young man more than anyone else.

if he has any aspirations to become an american football player again whether it is in the nfl or cfl, he may have just blown it.

what team would take a chance on a guy who would go out and publish any alleged dirt?

what teammate would put his trust and faith in a guy who is so willing to "pull the plug" on you?

think about it.

...nuff said.

Al,

Thinking about it while listening to L&L interview Ian Sample this morning, I too realized it.

Being local for those that understand what it is to be local, is something that can really make or break someone, especially when you play for a team that represents Hawai'i.

I was born and raised here all my life and in my short 24 years here on earth. I have only fully understood what it means to be local and keep that sense of respect within yourself as much as having it for strangers.

Without knocking Sample who came from Jersey OR anyone born elsewhere, either being local is something you pick up eventually or it will be something you will never understand.

On a similar note, Pops and Son Kanoa were pretty much supportive of him and his book, while Pops MAY have eluded to yesterday's blog comments during the Ian Sample chat, IF Pops did come across it.

Yesterday was interesting nonetheless.

Al,

As to you too, well put. As you said the "I" was yesterday's issue and if it's any consolation, it just furthers the discussions about UH football as a whole.

As apparently "JD" has now stepped into the light.

I believe this time of the year is better than Christmas!!!

The smell of kalbi in the air.

The late Saturday afternoon sun setting and casting a shadow over the hundreds of multi-colored canopies scattered in the Aloha Stadium parking lot.

The creaking of the Aloha Stadium stands when a child runs by not knowing or caring what the score of the game is... innocent youth at it's finest.

The way the overpasses connecting one section of the stadium to another sway in the wind, causing the "regulars" to blissfully laugh with no care in the world accompanied by the look of worry with new-comers.

The scent of garlic and li-hing powdered roasted nuts floating in the atmosphere along side the strips of newspaper and trash strewn about following a UH touchdown.

... "it's the most wonderful time of the year"

I shoot with both formats, digital and film. Mostly 35mm film, but medium-format for my own stuff or if someone has a deep pocket.

I have a budget-friendly 50mm f1.8 lens that might be quick enough to catch some of dinner action. Or the 14mm f2.8 for after dinner images.

I once ran into Mufi years ago in high school during one of his first mayoral campaigns at a Hoolaulea event in Waiks.

He was just walking around the crown, not making a scene but of course standing at 7'8" (LOL) everybody noticed him.

He was a genuine guy there, not trying to put on a show or anything. Me and my friends got a kick out of it, heck we felt a bit bad though as I believe that year he was going up against Jeremy Harris and honestly at that time I think everybody knew that he wasn't going to get the "nod".

Well at aprox 6:00 PM Thursday here in the hills of WV we had a major thunder storm which knock out my power until about 15 minuets ago, so I missed not only the Sample chat but also Nate's TV appearance, so major bummers.

As far as Ian's book I can't comment on it because I haven't read it, but I have peaked at the myspace stuff, an sorry to say that IMHO Ian is not a very good writer, it seemed to be full of nothing but innuendos, which of course can be damaging when taken out of context which is what the national media does all the time. Now don't misunderstand me he has the right to write anything he wants, but in the end he will be responsible for what he writes.

I liked Ian as a player I think he had a good year last year an showed moments of great skill, but I don't think that Pro football is where he will end up. But I wish him success in whatever the future brings, an thank him for being a Warrior.

The book:
I don't think people are questioning the accuracy so much as whether he should have aired the laundry.
The only thing I question is the amount of things that happen on the road. The team takes the redeye, arriving in a city early. They sleep most of the day, then practice until 9 at night. Then it's meetings, often until 1 or 2 in the morning. I can never sleep, so I'm always hanging out in the lobby. I never see groupies around. Maybe just the occasional pizza-delivery guy. Plus, right after games, the team leaves on a charter. There doesn't seem to be any free time for something to happen.
But what happens at home . . . well, anything is possible.

I know it's not "free time" yet, but a joke is in order.

If you've ever worked for a boss that reacts before
getting the facts and thinking things through, you
will love this!

A large company, feeling it was time for a shakeup,
hired a new CEO. The new
boss was determined to rid the company of all
slackers. On a tour of the facilities, the CEO
noticed a guy leaning on a wall.

The room was full of workers and he wanted to let them
know that he meant business. He walked up to the guy
leaning against the wall and asked, 'How much money do
you make a week?' A little surprised, the young man
looked at him and replied, 'I make $400 a week. Why?'
The CEO then handed the guy $1,600 in cash and
screamed, 'Here's four weeks' pay, now GET OUT and
don't come back.'

Feeling pretty good about himself, the CEO looked
around the room and asked, 'Does anyone want to tell me what that goof-ball did here?'

From across the room came a voice, 'Pizza delivery guy
from Domino's.'

ST – How come you don’t mention Princess Leila’s latest video on cb’s Ryan Mouton and Myron Newberry – “Competition heats up at cornerback”?

http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070817/VIDEO02/70816003

There’s also a nice video by Caryn Kunz and Diane Lee on “UH freshmen move into dorms”. We get to see and hear the new UH Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw. She speaks quite well – much better than … that last person. Oh – and at the end of the clip is a parent that has a great line and appropriate for this blog. (Hinshaw is misspelled in the video.)

I had the honor of working for Mufi's congressional campaign, and he is friend as well. I have said this about him, and I repeat it here. We are lucky that a guy with Mufi's talent has dedicated himself to public service, instead of working full time in business, where he could earn a lot more money. Not many know this, but Mufi has been a leader since his hana buttah days in Kalihi. And his lifelong ambition has been to do exactly what he does now... serving the people of Hawaii. A great man, IMHO.

Thanks for your comments.

Besides being one of the fastest [layer on his team, i am most proud of my son's academic success. He is an honor roll student and has recieved numerous awards.

Hawaiianbod,

I was impressed before, now I'm REALLY impressed. As a single father raising an 11-year-old, you must really be doing something right. It must be awesome to see your hard work with him paying off in the person he is.

All too often great athletes, or others with great potential, lose their chances because they fall behind in school or get into other trouble. You should be proud with how things are going for your son!

...once Jake has him down he can pray over him...and let God's hand move...when things happen around you that you cannot control, pointing fingers in blame can bring strife, but lifting the person that needs help or direction up to God, letting His hand move in a way that is mightier then the pen. Watching God do the work is much more interesting...

DPK,

That reminds me...

When you mentioned that you'd respect Sample more if he replied to you, I kind of felt the same way a little when I e-mailed HF back when Colt spoke out in ST's article and all fans were in an uproar.

I wished I saved the e-mail, but sure enough he responded to me two days later and timed at about 2:45-ish in the morning nonetheless.

My e-mail was a bit lengthy, but I obviously refrained from writing in a childish manner as that itself deserves NO response IMHO...

His response was about 5 sentences long, short and sweet I guess. But more importantly with a short response and the way it was written made me honestly feel that he read my entire e-mail.

I felt a bit better as I was really expecting him not to reply after everything that was happening at that time and his decision making was becoming a liablity for the University.

I believe his response felt more personalized as opposed to former Chancellor Konan and current President McClain which resembled a "cut and paste" job.

Received my brother's UNLV tickets yesterday from UH Ticket office. Looks like 20 yard line - section 105. Also got a flyer w/ the tix titled "Sam Boyd Stadium Policy" - might be of interest to the Tsaikos going to the game. Here's the text:

Sam Boyd Stadium Policy:

- Fans entering the facility may be subject to security check by metal detecting hand wands.
- Briefcases and pocketbooks will be allowed in the facility, but will be inspected at all entry gates.
- Large bags, coolers, and large backpacks will not be allowed into the facility. (This line is in bold letters :p)
- Once you have exited the facility, fans will not be allowed to re-enter for any reason.
- There will be an increased prescence both inside and outside the facility. (Hopefully to deter what happened at the last game - my comment)
- This type of search is designed to be done as quickly and effectively as possible so as not to slow donw the ingress of the crowd. Inappropriate items will include: coolers, video cameras, food and beverages, laser pens, and noise makers.

Have fun at the game! I'll look for the Tsaikos banner on TV :)

Plus, it was my lunch time so I figure I'm entitled to go on the blog...others at work were at a 2-hour going-away lunch at a pub (I'm sure beer was consumed). I just took an hour break to eat and blog, with my boss eating up a lot of that time.

Even when I work at home I limit my blog time, I have to get my work done. I actually get more done when I work at home, as nobody is around to drop into my office to chat. Unfortunately, my new boss pretty much ended our work-at-home policy.

Al, I would strongly recommend attending at least one practice. For a Tsaiko, taking it all in is a pleasure.

Walked past Michael Lefaele today, and that simple thing was kind of a high. He is an imposing young man.

There is just a ton of things likely to strike your fancy.

I didn't really have any expectations when I attended my first practice, but I came away impressed with the level of instruction.

Any way, I wnn't bore you with my impressions.

Go early and take in everything -- first player out, stretching, etc. It's all good.

If you get bored I'm sure they'll be some guys to talk story with.

I have great memories of practices -- Lelie, Owens, Pisa, Manuwai, Fuga, Tanuvasa, Carter, Timmy, etc.

Memories are still being made - Colt, Bess, Rivers, Pilares, LWJ, Hawthorne, etc.

Report back how it goes.

Great news for Ikaika! I hope that he does well tomorrow!

The first-team defense is also scheduled to go deep into the second quarter. But if it gets a lot of work early, it could come out earlier. Rookie Ikaika Alama-Francis will start at right defensive end.

“I just want to see him get under pressure, feel it, see what it’s like, see how he reacts,” Marinelli said.

5 things to watch in Detroit's game tomorrow:

2. The pass rush needs to start putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Until Shaun Rogers gets into better shape and returns, the Lions will get pushed around.

Two things:

1. Sam Boyd Stadium - its OK to bring a briefcase, but no backpacks. Now days I have seen some pretty huge or thick briefcases around.

2. If I read it right, the lower Halawa parking lot will open at 1:30pm and all the other parking gates at 3:00pm?

I guess the stadium is telling everyone if you want to tailgate early, on it the lower Halawa lot. Do they realize the lower lot is open to all the sun and rain....and when the sun is out IT'S VERY HOT!

I dont agree if this is the new plan.

ct & Warrior Dave -

Whew - just got back from a screening of "Bourne Ultimatum". This final part of the trilogy wraps up the story very well. Personally, I preferred #2 - Bourne Supremacy(sp?).

I have not met Chef Ramsay, but Fox loves him. Like Simon on Idol, he makes the show - love him or hate him. During Season 1, there were some behind the scene things that I'm not at liberty to discuss, however, that's why the show continues on.

As for the talent on reality shows - the formula is simple - get a diversified group (Note: not the most talented) together so the audience has someone to relate to, or to love or hate. Remember our good buddy Sanjaya on Idol? He was awful, but the young girls kept voting for him and radio talk shows kept talking about his (lack of) talent. When you hear these things, it's like a 15 car pile up. You gotta take a peek.

Actually, a woman who worked for me when I was a production executive for some A&E, History & Discovery Channel shows (that job was omitted from my bio), is now casting some of the Fox reality shows. She makes in a week what some people make in a month and she earns every penny of it. With reality shows, you're taking people off the street and putting them into unfamiliar territory. The cost of risk management, psych testing, and background checks is numbing, as well as the insurance premiums. Think about it - you've got a buch of people off the street with butcher knives and open flames. Don't get me started on the problems with Paradise Island.

Yeah for Nate! Even though he averaged 2 yards per carry, he got the rock 7 times! Glad they were calling his number. I'm waiting for him do his rendition of a runaway freight train and take it to the house!

This is what WarriorMojo wrote:

Guava, I'm not surprised you support Ian's book. You seem to be just like him. Both of you like to air dirty laundry in public and think that makes you cool or brave or strong. Nothing could be further from the truth. It makes you look small and petty and vindictive. The worst cancer eats away from the inside, brother. I explained this to you before, brother. How come you still don't get it?

Speaking for myself, I never questioned Ian's right to write whatever he wants. I am, however, VERY DISAPPOINTED that the best he could come up with is a hatchet job. I thought he was BETTER than that. I WANTED him to be better than that.

Finally, I gotta ask you this, Guava. What exactly is there for Ian to be proud about in that book? That he talked about picking up chicks? That he talked about drug use? That he talked about academic cheating? BFD about all of that. It's not chocking. It's not interesting. I mean who really cares?

The book is a creative and artistic failure and I would tell Ian that to his face. You encouraging Ian to be proud of his hack job is stupid and I would tell you that to your face.

******************************

Well my friend, you had your say, after I had my say, which included not a DAMN thing directed toward any individual, yet you wanna get all "silly".

PLEASE!!!

Name one piece of "dirty" laundry that I have aired on this blog, just one my so-called friend, JUST ONE.
Nothing with an agenda, nothing to wanna be "cool" or "brave" or any of that non-sense you chirp of.

You ask exactly what does Ian Sample have to proud of...?
Well, how about the effort it took to get a book published. That my friend, is NOT easy. I applaud him for following his "passion", which is trying to be a writer. I never said I agreed with everything he said, but I do applaud his effort of getting something done.
What the hell is wrong with that...?

You know WarriorMojo, the BIGGEST reason I post stuff here is because of the many errors that some people write about. I mean I LOVE the passion that many people here wriet with, from the botom of my heart I do, but SOME, my God, couldn't be farther from the truth and I'd tell that to ALL their faces, inculding yours (MANY TIMES).
Nothing like people who THINK they know, trying to tell those who DO know, that my friend, is annoying, irritating.
I speak the truth, ONLY the truth with EVERY post.
Not once have I entered my opinion, NOT ONCE!!!

It started out trying help the many TRUE fans we have here on this blog. People questioned my facts and integrity early on, quickly they found they were WRONG and I was RIGHT. It happened a second time, a third, then again and again and STILL, I gotta put up with kindergarten minds like this crap....

PLEASE!!!

WarriorMojo, I'm glad you have your opinion, I am, REALLY.
But don't get stupid and try to be all HARD and TUFF on a blog.
Trying to say stuff like I'd say it to your face!!!
Brother, trust me, YOU HAVE NO IDEA!!!

I think the cereal commercial says it best, "Silly rabbit, tricks are for kids".

I love all on this blog, love the opinions expressed, love the personal stories, love the little tid-bits, but this non-sense is child-like, and I'd say that to your face.

Guava, thank you for your reply. Before I respond to your specific points, let me explain one thing. When I was talking about saying things to your face, I wasn't trying to be "HARD and TUFF" as you put it. Not all.

The only reason I wrote about saying things to your face is because another poster yesterday accused me of writing things on the blog that I wouldn't say to Ian's face and that's just not true. I don't write more harshly than I am. I don't speak more gently than I am. What I write is what I am. What I speak is what I am. And like Popeye, I am what I am.

Name one piece of "dirty" laundry that I have aired on this blog, just one my so-called friend, JUST ONE.

Do I have to stop at one? It's so hard to pick. Okay, how about your criticism of Reinebold? You said something to the effect that Reinebold isn't such a great recruiter and the only reason he has the stats is that JJ doesn't let anyone else offer scholies. You also said that Cal Lee would be a much greater recruiter, but that JJ was basically forcing him NOT to recruit.

Guava, I don't care if everything you said is true. It is STILL dirty laundry. It is petty. It is vindictive. It is a cancer. And it is the kind of stuff that can kill this program. If Cal Lee has a beef, I'm sure he can take it up with JJ or speak about it himself. If Cal couldn't get satisfaction, I'm sure he would quit. I don't think he needs you to air his gripes.

Okay, so there is your example. As you request, I'm going to stop at one. If you wanted more, I would talk about how you went after Glanville and JJ and how you punked Barry M., who I don't know and have never met.

One last point, Guava. I love this program. I have donated thousands of dollars to support this program. I do NOT want to see this program needlessly hurt or dragged through the mud. Because of this, EVERYTHING I say arises out of my love and support for this program. Can you say the same? Can Ian Sample?

Why don't you have Laila and/or your brother write articles related to UH football since they're already at practice? I enjoy Mike's writing in particular and feel he adds a lot to the sports section.

I'm not sure how the inter-office politics are or how assignments are handed out but since she's at practice so much doesn't it make sense to have her write something for the paper related to football? For me personally, I'd much rather read an article she wrote about UH football than view one of the videos on this site. During this time of year I want more UH or even HS football coverage. No offense but I can't remember a single soccer article and the homegrown report, for as long as I can remember (well before Laila took over) reads like a press release from Punahou School.

I support Ian for his ambition and his desire to be a writer. He would have my whole hearted best wishes if he had left things in the hands of his editor. Instead, he has needlessly hurt many people and the program.
Imagine what happpens the next time a blue chip athlete's parents have to make a choice of schools for their son, with Hawaii in the running against some bigger programs and those same parents have read the excerpts. What do you think a graduate of Kamehameha feels when one of the "groupies" he describes is named as an alumnus of that school when ALL other names are left out of that section? There are many other grads from K.S. besides myself who are regulars here on this blog. Some who are UH graduates as well. Should we just feel like it's stuff that needs to be told, and that his POV needs our respect? I could site many, many others who are being hurt by his actions but it's pretty much a moot point, and what's done is done.

Not to take sides between my two WB brothers, but I agree with Warrior Mojo on this one. Ian Sample's efforts could have much more of my respect if he hadn't shown such enormous, NEEDLESS disresepct to so many, many, others. He can sell the book without the website version.

BTW, to put it into perspective, Ian Sample was interviewed on KITV news tonight. When asked about the allegations of steroid use and drug test "fixing", he said he never saw anyone doing steroids. He also had no proof of drug test fixing, but based his opinon on what he himself
called "coincidences". It was also stated that the NCAA administers those tests. Yet those items "needed to be told."

I don't know Ian Sample. But I do know Guava and WarriorMojo, and I'm glad both of them love the Warriors as much as they do.

Everyone in the sports department is welcome to write UH football stories.
But I don't let reporters from other departments write about the Warriors. They want to do stories on Colt to boost their readerships. I'm like, sorry, no hit-and-run reporting. If you can't sit through a three-hour practice, you can't write about UH.

My only concern was that Ryan limped off field just before half-time. I hope its one of the those ice down and shake off things. I'd like to announce a few updates with my Web site (see link above).

  • Every folder in the subdomain has its own index page now, that was a low priority thing that I kept on pushing back.
  • I am now linking to the main index page, rather than the form. There are other things than just the form, and with the season starting, I'd like to highlight them.
  • Under "Miscellaneous Stuff" is the long-awaited XHTML tutorial. Thanks to SteveM for his help.
  • I am working on bringing back the computer college rankings that I debuted at Yakiniku Camellia, the same rankings that nobody cared about. Eh, it's for fun.
  • When I get done with Kekaniokawai's research project, it'll be in the Statistics folder, but that's going to take a while. For now, there's lots of other stats to look at.
  • And I finally caved in and established a PayPal account so that I can accept gifts that you may want to send to help cover time and effort spent on research. I didn't want to do it, but I thought it would be good to have a fund to help pay for college expenses now and in the future. Take this post to be my one and only act of solicitation.

I expect those two to meet for the State Championship game in early December...I have already predicted that Kahuku will win that game (I predicted here and on the radio that St. Louis would win tonite).

That reminds me of a short conversation I had with Princess Leila yesterday. 1) Her ankle is still bothering her, and 2) She said something that makes me think she's going to go and devote more time to her beats. I forgot about this earlier, I'm only putting two and two together now. It would be sad to see her give up videography for her beats, but ultimately, more important is where her heart lies. Do what you need to do, Leila, we'll support you no matter what, and we know you'll continue doing a great job, cause you're a great reporter.

aloha Tsaikos,

mahalo for your awesome work barry, and thanks for all of the prayers and support for our son ryan. the videos will tell the story, but he played very well against a very big and athletic kahuku front line.

he has a sore heel, not his ankle, a black left eye, and a bruised right elbow, but he is fine. R.I.C.E. and some TLC will get him back to normal sooner that we think, but he heals quickly.

good game, a little sloppy, but hopefully they will meet again in a few months. the kahuku QB is a good one, if he had more apt receivers he'd be setting records.

good night to all, mahalo again....and just in case you missed it earlier....THERE'S NO BEAST....WITHOUT EAST......haha

We had some very spirited dialogue tonight, which I enjoyed very much. Neither party was right or wrong, but just expressed personal opinions from different perspectives. We are each entitled to our opinion, which is the greatest thing about living in a free country. Our opinions differ about different subjects, but what binds us together is a love for the Warrior football program, and a love for the players. We are like a family, with rivalries and skirmishes between siblings, and sometimes between parents. But in the end, a family will always come together because they are bound by the blood that runs through their veins. We all bleed the same color---- green and black. That blood running through our veins is what binds us together.

With that in mind, please if we can, lets be free to share and debate, but not let it get too personal. I may be wrong to be voicing my opinion in this area, this isn't my blog, and I'm not one of the designated leaders. I'm just a freindly lurker who likes listening and reading all of the input from my fellow brothers and sisters. But to call people out and challenge other posters is something that should be done elsewhere and not within the confines of the blog. Again, I am not directing this to any one or two posters in general, but to all of us. Just a reminder to watch what we say and do, and to mind our manners. If you agree with me or disagree, it doesn't matter. I'm putting it out there anyway. Aloha.

The rookie defensive end will make his first start. Three starting linemen are out with injuries (Shaun Rogers , knee; Dewayne White , groin; and Kalimba Edwards , ankle). Alama-Francis will start on the right and play at both ends. Coach Rod Marinelli likes his ability, but wants to see production.

About the RB transferring from USC.

Moody, a sophomore tailback who was USC's second-leading rusher last season, said he was at peace with his decision to transfer to another school in search of a featured role.

"I had to make a business decision for my future," he said. "I think it was the right thing to do."

Moody acknowledged rumors that he would transfer to Oklahoma State, but declined to name other schools he was considering.

"I'm just going to open it up kind of like I'm a high school recruit again," he said.

However, when asked if he would prefer to attend school close to his home state of Texas, he said, "Oklahoma State is definitely an option because it's only three hours from my house. But it's just, they're on the list."

By transferring now rather than at the end of training camp, Moody will be eligible to enroll for the fall semester or quarter at a new school and will be eligible in 2008.

"Timing-wise it couldn't be any better," he said.

Jason Taylor backed out of a deal to appear on a weekly radio show on the station, as a result of its promos mocking the Dolphins, his representative said.

The promos say that the Dolphins "don't deserve a real pregame show, so we're giving them a fake one." Several teammates heard the promos and told Taylor about them.

"Jason's first priority is to his employer, which is the Miami Dolphins," said Ralph Stringer, who represents Taylor in his broadcasting and marketing endeavors. "When the situation became evident that the station was taking a position basically being derogatory to the team, him being the captain of the team, he could neither condone nor support that."

Stringer said there was no basis for a lawsuit, because Taylor had not signed a formal contract.

"There was nothing that we signed that dealt with this type of situation, something that would put an employee in an awkward position," Stringer said.

Cleveland vs. Detroit tonight, I think I'll cheer for the defense on both teams...especially 2 rookie DEs!

The "Great Lakes Classic" - subtitle to tonight's Detroit at Cleveland NFL preseason game - matches two of the six active franchises never to reach a Super Bowl.

Bad history comes wrapped in ugly current events.

Since going 9-7 in 2000, the Lions are 24-72.

Since going 9-7 in 2002, the Browns are 19-45.
Permalink 08/18/07 @ 04:32
After writing the above comment, a few articles later I came across this!

It's a long way from Hawaii for two defensive ends in the Great Lakes Classic. Ikaika Alama-Francis is a Detroit rookie via a second-round draft pick. Melila Purcell, who started opposite Alama-Francis for the University of Hawaii last year, is a rookie Round 6 pick with the Browns.
Permalink 08/18/07 @ 04:33
Marinelli also plans to use the game against Cleveland to test some of his younger players, including second-round draft pick DE Ikaika Alama-Francis, who will also start against the Browns.

Marinelli on Alama-Francis: “I’m going to probably rotate him a little bit and let Corey (Smith) take some of the nickel in the first group. So, let him (Alama-Francis) get some good base run form; he’ll play quite a bit. I’m going to shift him back to some left end as the game goes on. I just want to see him get under pressure. He’ll feel it, see what it’s like, we’ll see how he reacts. I’m going to have him rush some nickel, and see how he does.”
Permalink 08/18/07 @ 04:35
Nate will have a few days off of practice now.

On the players having a few days off: "It'll be good. The players have the day off tomorrow and they have the carnival on Sunday so there won't be a practice on Sunday. So they get a couple of days here so they can get they're legs back. We've got a lot of work to get done that next week. We've got a lot of things we need to still finish up from a camp standpoint."

I just read this in my morning paper (I love having a print copy of a newspaper!).

Hawaii is the most expensive state in the nation, by far, for doing business, according to a report by the Milken Institute.

It's the third straight year Hawaii ranked No. 1 on the independent economic think tank's annual Cost-Of-Doing Business Index, which measures wages, taxes, electricity costs and real estate costs for industrial and office space.

scored 151.5, which meant that the overall cost of doing business in the state was about 52 percent higher than the national average. The score was up from 148.4 in 2006 and 143.1 in 2005, according to the report.

Jim Tollefson, president and chief executive of the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, said Hawaii's ranking came as no surprise. “We're doing all we can to improve our ranking,” Tollefson added.

Hawaii had the highest electricity and industrial space costs and ranked second in tax burden.

The Milken Institute said its index indicates each state's comparative advantages or disadvantages in attracting and retaining businesses. Those states with a low cost of doing business have, on average, greater job growth than those with high costs.

“I think it's something we're concerned about, and we continuously look for ways to reduce those costs to make it easy for businesses to start up,” Hawaii economist Pearl Imada Iboshi said.

Wages in the islands, however, were not the highest. Wages in Hawaii ranked 22, despite the high cost of living.

7-3 Chinese center gives Cal high hopes
Still-developing Zhang will be Bears' tallest player ever, by 3 inches
By Jeff FaraudoSTAFF WRITER
Article Last Updated: 08/18/2007 02:36:58 AM PDT

BERKELEY — Xu "Max" Zhang, a 7-foot-3 center from Yantai, China, signed a letter-of-intent
Friday with Cal's basketball team, becoming the tallest player in the program's history.

"If Max gets stronger, if he continues to develop physically, he's definitely got pro potential,"
Cal coach Ben Braun said. "You just can't get the ball to the basket when he's around it."

Zhang, 19, did not begin playing basketball until he was 15 years old. But he was named to
China's high school all-star team by his senior season and spent last year attending the American
English Academy in Monterey Park.

Cal returns four big men this season, led by 6-11 senior center DeVon Hardin and 6-10 sophomore
forward Ryan Anderson. So Zhang is not expected to see much playing time as a freshman, but he
will get the chance to add strength to his 225-pound frame while developing his game.
"To be honest, I remembered him after the fact," Braun said.
"He wasn't as developed then. He was just starting play."

But Braun watched Zhang play a couple of times this spring and summer,
including at a camp at Berkeley in June, where the coaching staff was not allowed to have contact
with recruits, but Cal players got the chance to know him.

"He had good skills, a good (shooting) touch. His footwork was pretty good," Braun said. "A lot
of our guys thought he was a good player, a good kid."

Zhang played AAU ball this year, and made a splash at the Cactus Classic in Tucson, Ariz., ranking
third in both rebounding and blocked shots.

Rhode Island and USC were among other schools that showed interest in Zhang, who lived the past
year with an uncle in Southern California. Braun said Zhang's family in China were supportive of
his decision to attend Berkeley.

"People in China know about Cal," he said.
