The Warrior Beat
Stephen Tsai knows University of Hawai'i sports, down to the last decimal of a 40-yard dash. He's lived UH sports since 1987. Few reporters get the inside information like he does. What Tsai writes is a daily must read.

Day 4

The second week of practice opened with the defense getting some work. The defense was allowed to wear shoulder pads, so there was some modified hitting. Mario Cox was gang-tackled but walked away OK.
Some notes:
• Greg McMackin's wife and grandson, Taylor McMackin, attended practice. Taylor was used on some defensive drills.
• To spice up practice during 7-on-7 drills, the defensive secondary consisted of Davone Bess and (a helmetless) Jason Rivers as cornerbacks and Ryan Grice-Mullins and Colt Brennan as safeties.
• Cameron Allen-Jones received a lot of work as tight end/H-back/big body. Brennan said Allen-Jones is a good receiver.
• Punahou's Miah Ostrowski attended practice.
• Blaze Soares has been impressive as the strong-side linebacker.
• Did I mention that middle linebacker Solomon Elimimian is now wearing No. 17?
• Or that right cornerback Myron Newberry is No. 3?

* * *

Brennan has taken out a career insurance policy.

* * *

Please view Princess Leila's videos of today's practice. She left her sick bed to shoot them.

Emperor Greg Yamamoto's photos are now on display.

Heard that the basketball selections are down to a final four. A decision probably will be made this week.

i am not surprised at how well blaze soares has done. i remember watching him as a starter during his soph year at castle thinking then that this kid got it. then when i realized he was only 15 yrs old. wow.

he has size, speed, and football instincts (smarts). he just gets better each year. doesn't he run a 4.6 something? in two years he will be drafted too.

plus with a football name like blaze...

WreckinEyez,

I'm guessing that Colt has the standard insurance policy through the NCAA. That covers injury, but not AD mistakes. Players in programs successful enough to have to take out insurance policies normally know their schedule a year or two in advance.

How to find the right man for the job
April 5, 2007

Mike DeCourcy

At the heart of the issue, basketball coaches aren't really fired because they lose or underachieve or fail to meet expectations. They are fired because their bosses made lousy hires.

From South Florida to Arkansas to Iowa, athletic directors have made a hash of their coaching searches.

If only they'd remember a few simple guidelines, these ADs might wind up with their own Ben Howlands.

1. Your job is not as good as you think. This is true even of the best programs. Except North Carolina. The Carolina job is that good, but the Heels aren't hiring anyone who didn't go to school there, anyway.

It's essential every school recognize where it stands in the pecking order. Arkansas should have known that despite its greater basketball tradition, the current state of college athletics makes the Texas A&M job at least as good. Why would Billy Gillispie move to make $2 million if he could get about the same money with the Aggies? Simple answer: He wouldn't. So what was Arkansas' response to failing to land him? A representative for the Razorbacks called Rick Barnes, whose job at Texas is immensely better. Not surprisingly, Barnes was not interested.

If you understand your job's strengths and weaknesses, you can better identify who will be the best coach available -- and willing -- to be your hire.

When Iowa asked Tennessee's permission to interview Vols coach Bruce Pearl, he reacted as though he'd just been French-kissed by Camilla Parker Bowles. Supposedly, the Hawkeyes needed to prove to some fans Pearl would not be interested, but that was like throwing up a halfcourt shot in the first minute of a Final Four game just to prove you can't make it. It's pointless.

Seeing others reject a job makes subsequent candidates more leery about the detriments of the position -- and it drives up their prices. With agents and search firms available to handle behind-the-scenes contacts, no school needs to be in a position to be publicly rejected.

3. Plan ahead. Some ADs go through a full season knowing they will hire a basketball coach when it's over, but they avoid getting the hiring process started until the current coach is gone. Would a coach construct a game plan after the opening tip?

Any coaching search still continuing after three weeks -- South Florida's, for instance -- is going badly. Arkansas let Stan Heath go because it believed Gillispie would accept the job, then it was left scrambling for another option. Its "plan" consisted simply of arrogance.

4. No search committees. More schools are starting to realize what a disaster it can be to allow biology professors and student body presidents to have input into hiring a coach. But just as doctors continue to vaccinate for diseases that have vanished from this country, it's important to remind everyone of the dangers of search committees. They slow progress, distort the process and involve too many people who have no idea what they're doing.

Other than that, they are a great idea.

all to familiar, huh?

thanks madeinhawaii.

The naming of the new head coach is down to 4 finalist? Then I feel confident we will know who was selected by the end of the NBA finals!

I guess the football schedule takes a back seat to naming the head coach for basketball. It would be a pity if we played just 12 games...

back to sports...now that i think about it. thinking is always a dangerous path for me. the announcement of the new basketball coach will have a bigger impact on hawaii athletics.

at this point, i believe by now we are all so fed up with the schedule that anything short of a decent 13th opponent will be viewed as a failure on the part of the person responsible. so if its another d1aa team, really weak team, or no team we have prepared ourselves for it already. we have anguished over it. we have languished because of it.

but, poor hermie, if its not john wooden or dean smith himself then it better be bob nash. otherwise the people of hawaii will lose faith in him as a person more so than as an administrator of the only program in town.

In case anyone missed it, Andy Katz hit Frazier on ESPN:

http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?name=katz_andy

What is Herman Frazier doing? The Hawaii athletic director essentially forces Riley Wallace to announce his retirement, effective at the end of the season just before New Year's Eve. The thinking then was so that he could find a coach. Well, we're waiting. … Frazier still hasn't made the move on assistant Bob Nash (the likely right call at this point) with candidates being bandied about such as UCLA assistant Donny Daniels, the above mentioned Morgan, Portland Trail Blazers assistant Dean Demopoulos, and possibly Rice coach Willis Wilson. Colorado, which knew Patton was out prior to the first tip, waited all season to hire Air Force's Jeff Bzdelik. Minnesota, which sacked Dan Monson in November, waited to hire Tubby Smith from Kentucky. What is Hawaii going to do? If Frazier ends up hiring Nash then it was a colossal waste of time as the Rainbows are losing out on recruits. One thing is certain: Assistant Jackson Wheeler must be retained since he is one of the few people who understands how to recruit to Hawaii (lots of Juco and foreign contacts).

Maverick,

I wouldn't worry about Beowulf, she seems to be very cool about everything. You had some very nice words about her boy (we all think very highly about Jacob!), so I don't think that a minor name mistake is a big deal.

You wouldn't believe how badly my first name has been mispelled. I got a basketball trophy as "Gary", got other awards with two "Ts" and/or one "R", etc. Because of that I try to be careful about name errors, but it never bothers me if someone gets my name wrong.

I'm sure that Jacob has been called much worse names on the football field with the way he hits so hard...

Well, UH is advertising the Associate Coach and the two Assistant Coach positions in basketball. The closing date for applications is April 16th. The Associate Coach position is at: http://workatuh.hawaii.edu/zoom_job.php?7269.

If a head coach is to be hired and that person wishes to put together a coaching staff with his/her own people, then Herm will have to name the head coach this week as Stephen indicated so that the associate and assistants can apply in time - unless UH plans to re-advertise those positions, of course and waste more time (and disguise the associate/assistants as "unofficial observers").

A Filipino man came up to me asking for a "mop", I pondered awhile thinking what does he need that mop for? could he have spilt a whole bucket of water in his car? hmmmmmmm, oh well, if that whats he wants I'll go get the mop. Well, I go into the service bay lookin for a mop and my manager comes out, "hey, what you lookin for", I say "a mop" for the customer, hahahaha, the manager was puzzled too. I locate a mop and take it over the guy, oh boy, the Manong was furious, he wanted to throw already! to say the least

My manager came out and stood between me and the customer. I was sent into the office and the manager took care of the guy. We all had a big laugh big time! My manager told me, the gut was asking for a "Map".

Jake does have an inner strength, but it's not from Bruce Lee.

I've told this story before, but when I was up at practice last year getting autographs, I saw Jake and asked him to sign. As he was doing so, I thanked him for coming to UH and for being such an inspirational player.

He answered by saying, "The Lord wanted me to come to Hawaii. Thank you for supporting the team." He was looking me straight in the eye as he said this so I'm guessing that he is very devout and that is the source of his inner strength.

every asst and associate coach has a one year contract only in every sport. the reason for such is that if a head coach leaves by his own accord or not. the new coach will want to bring in their own staff. this one year contract allows for an easy and more economical solution during the changing of the guard.

The #54 has a lot of history here at Manoa. Just like that #31 that Patek is using. Although, I'm sure that the new #31 is making the original "Mento" very proud.

Hey, ST: any chance on getting some info from Greg regarding what equipment he was using to get those shots? I figure we have until July or so to tell Rich about needing tickets. I'll either need 3 or 0, depends on my folks.

My almost-4-year-old actually says that she prefers Vegas to Anaheim (Disneyland). She loves Circus Circus!

is that what we want?

i still don't get it,

the university of hawaii is a state of hawaii institution.

the people of this state are the state of hawaii.

therefore, the university of hawaii is for the people of the state of hawaii.

so, the people of the state of hawaii want bob nash to be the head coach. so why isn't it that bob nash is not the head coach.

does the athletic directorship of the state of hawaii's university have that kind of autonomy that it can flat out ignore what the people of hawaii are calling for?

furthermore,

and in all this...where is our governor regarding football and ethics in our basketball program. i am disappointed that not a peep has come from her office.

because of the lack of a strong home schedule, espn has decided to telecast the games that are on the mainland.

shoudln't this send an alarm to your governorship?

had we a couple more strong home games, espn would have telecast those games, thus, providing the whole state of hawaii some additional national exposure to help boost our greatest industry...tourism.

please don't tell me that our leaders do not see this?

Al . . .

It was how you said it -- succinct and clearly.

We're tired of the business as usual attitude where it appears as though nothing is happening or being done to constructively solve the problem.

As a result perhaps people higher up have to see it as a far larger problem than just a lacking schedule. Those higher ups always understand the bottom line. Tourism dollars for the state will be negatively impacted. You cannot get any more bottom line than that.

Perhaps now they'll do something.

So, once again, Al. Bravissimo on saying it in a way they may understand.

About 10 yrs ago we voted via a contituttional amendment to make the University an autonomous(sp?) state entity. which means that except for appointing BOR the Gov does not influence UH policy.

John from San Diego,

Check out the Tsai article in the link above. Or this excerpt from that very same article.
Heck is apparently freezing over because the University of Hawai'i football team employed a tight end during yesterday's spring practice.

For the record, June Jones, architect of the four-wide offense, said Cameron Allen-Jones is a big running back learning pass routes. Jones has not used a tight end in his first eight seasons as UH head coach.

But Allen-Jones was aligned as a tight end and, at 6 feet 2 and 265 pounds, resembles a you-know-what.

"It's like a wing tight end," Allen-Jones said of his position.
I'm still hoping for Jones to bus out the Big Boned Wishbone this year.

Would be something if JJ had the offense lined up in a double tight end formation like Nebraska..that would really wreak havoc on the opponents' defense...heck just run multiple formations off it and create mismatches...defense would experience confusion galore...

Well, JJ did say last season that there was less of a need for trick plays because the offense was running on all cylinders. I'm sure he still has those fake punts and other trick plays up his sleeve, but if the offense is running well, then no need, yeah? :-)

But the memos she has to send out aren't really hers — or Herman's, for that matter. It's almost like a hostage having to read a statement.
When Frazier took over, he shows us this chart that Leahey describes as the Catholic Church hierarchy. There's the Pope, then a second layer of associates and a third layer of assistants. Lois was supposed to be on that third level. But so far — surprise, surprise — nothing.
Five years later, Drinking Buddy is earning bucks, the tennis coach is sitting on committees, and someone who hasn't even had her 10th high school reunion is running the books.

Jason,

I'm sure that you'll be fine with your Physics homework. I tutored Physics for years...then when I became a prof I found out that they give you the solution manuals to all books for free! Ever since then I got soft and lazy regarding Physics. I can still do advanced math, but I only care about the parts of Physics that relate to what I'm doing for work.

There used to be a bookstore in LA that let you order any solutions manual to a textbook. The purpose was to help workers figure out the textbooks so they could learn on their own...but I know of some graduate students that bought a few solutions manual. Now with books over the internet I figure that the problem is much worse.

Some grad classes at Stanford and Texas are open book and they let you bring any book you want to the exam. Some professors are lazy and take problems straight from the book instead of making up their own. If it is legal to bring the solutions manual to the exam...you see a flaw in the system.

So, when I was a prof I spent days making up my own problems for tests because I made sure my problems were different than those in any book.

ST, you are too funny. So why are you a Mets fan? I was a David Cone fan early on, then David Wells threw that perfect game on my 11th birthday, and I was hooked. I didn't know better when I was young, I had never heard of the concept of bandwagon jumpers. But that youthful alliance has grown into a healthy adult fanaticism. (Gotta defend myself before someone asks, because someone ALWAYS asks.)

I have a good friend who is a Mets fan, he pitched for Nā Menehune. Gave me fits that he couldn't compete in Oʻahu Math League for half the season, he could have been good in that too. I'll save the Mets/Yanks banter for him, we'll stick to UH sports here.

Wasn't that just a terrible memo?
Do you think the Regents are saying: Whew. I'm glad there are no glitches.
Really, just hire somebody. It's not that difficult.
If somebody paid me $250,000:
• I'd turn the football scheduling over to June Jones.
• I'd cut one of the associates — but not Marilyn, because she has a law degree and she's the smartest one up there — and use the $100,000 savings to maintain the lower campus. That means soap in the showers, shower heads in the showers, power-cleaning the parking lots.
• I'd hire Nash, and pay him the $400,000.
• I'd make the marketing people work on commission. The more you sell, the more you earn.
• I'd buy a house in Hawai‘i, just so people have the illusion I actually want to live here for a while.
• I wouldn't eat in Waikiki more than once a week.
• I'd let Bob Hogue back on the air, just to prove that sticks and stones are the only things that can hurt me.
• I'd appear weekly on the Warrior Beat.

Okay it's late. We talked a little football, a little food. ST revealed a little about family, everyone sounded like they were having fun.

Now I'd like to add a new F. I believe we're on the clock to discuss anything that we want now until ST's next post.

F for future. This question is for Garret, hopefully he's still awake. What's the big deal with this proton smashing thing in Geneva? What do they expect to find out? What kind of impact will it have on our future? What are the political ramifications with the big machine being on European as opposed to it being an American project where supposedly U.S. once had the upper hand?

If it's to much to handle on the blog, I understand. I was just wondering...as I was falling asleep.

Jason, then if you are serious about teaching take the B.ed route. Once you graduate, you pay undeclared tuition which cost a LOT more and you have to take upper division and graduate level classes. The math majors I know are mostly B.eds and they take only 300-400 level courses. You can still get your Masters should you decide to pursue it. I think.

prideperiod reminded me of what Long Time said earlier tonight...
Would be nice...if it was a 0ne-day cruise to nowhere.. I wonder if ST could tolerate the Tsaikos for a 7-day inter-island cruise....LOL

Besides, Norwegian Cruise Line would take a look at all the Tsaikos trekking in the dining room and say....LOSE MONEY! :-)
ST would get tons of material to write about on a cruise with us. There's a lot of fruits and veggies on the cruises.

Gotta tell you about thel Pride of America cruise I was on. High population of U.S. citizens, and when I walked among them, I was one of the smallest guys there. Al would look so small the bartender might ask him for ID. The elevator overload alarms went off when more than 5 of us got in the elevators. I don't think the maitre d' or crew wouldn't blink when the Tsai-Ko's enter the dining room.

So, is Herman Frazier Herman Ronald Frazier a fantasy character similar to Bond, James Bond?

That would be awesome! You have to read the next part in your best movie trailer voice-over --

“He always gets the schedule completed even when things look bleak. The coolest gadgets are always at his finger tips so he is able to secretly make the right selection for a coach. And, he has lots of USOC connections so the Warrior facilities, personnel, and students are cared for.

“Your heart will race. Your blood pressure will rise. You will cringe at the inaction.
Herman Frazier Herman Ronald Frazier is ‘Arrogant Hard Head’. Playing at your favorite university now!”
