The Warrior Beat
Stephen Tsai knows University of Hawai'i sports, down to the last decimal of a 40-yard dash. He's lived UH sports since 1987. Few reporters get the inside information like he does. What Tsai writes is a daily must read.

Day 9: Practice report; haka; video

The video of today's practice is posted

8:33 a.m. — Today's practice opened with an animated haka.
Timo Paepule has really esatablished himself as the leader.

8:35 a.m. — Samson Satele's mom is wearing a Miami Dolphins' jersey with "Satele" on the back.
Keahi Watson, the brother of defensive lineman, Keala Watson, is set to join the Warriors on Aug. 20. He's a dead ringer for Keala.

9:15 a.m. — Calvin Roberts is here, but is not practicing. He needs to complete more paper work before being allowed to work out. He said he expects to practice Monday.
The referees are out here. Although the team is not in pads, there will be some form of a modified scrimmage.

9:20 a.m. — The Sateles said they will gather at East-Side Grill to watch the Dolphins' game today.

9:30 a.m. — Alvis Satele, the legend as well as Brashton's dad, said his wife and Chad Mock's mom are cousins. Alvis said Chad and his mom used to walk home from Aloha Stadium after games. They turned down rides, because Chad felt it was a good way to spend time talking with his mom.

Around 9:45 a.m. — Davone Bess has recovered from his fumble, making three great plays. On one, he sprinted past the secondary to catch Colt Brennan's long pass. On another, he made a leaping grab. He also raced past Erik Pedersen to make a catch.
The defense also has played well. Gerard Lewis soared for an interception, and JoPierre David jumped to break up a pass. Later, a referee warned Davis about using his hands to shield a receiver's view. The referees, in a sense, are serving as guest coaches.

Around 10 a.m. — Brad Kalilimoku made a diving pass breakup.
The defense is in the Okie alignment, allowing safeties Jacob Patek, Keao Monteilh and Desmond Thomas to all play at the same time.
Whoops. Ryan Grice-Mullins just ripped thorugh the secondary to make a leaping catch. The refs declared it a touchdown.

10:06 a.m. — The refs are getting winded.
Ref A: "Are we in high altitude?"
Ref B: "Yeah, 50 feet above sea level."

10:10 a.m. — Some defensive players are scolded for sitting near the sideline. "Sideline warning," Desmond Thomas says.
Davone Bess just made his fourth nice catch of this 7-on-7 drill.

10:13 a.m. — Cameron Allen-Jones is working out as a tight end. He's actually pretty quick on his cuts.

I guess GA stands for graduating again.
Graduate assistant Brian Kajiyama completes the second leg of his Tour de Genius when he receives his master's degree in tomorrow's ceremony.
"One to go," said Kajiyama, who aspires to earn a PhD, thus making him the team's unpaid doctor.
Kajiyama finished his assignments in mid-May, too late to participate in the spring-semester ceremony. Yes, he's another smart guy who can't meet a deadline.
Check out Brian's blog:

UH has split the kick-return team into two units: front line, coached by Rich Miano, and back side, coached by Dennis McKnight.
Guyton Galdeira, C.J. Allen-Jones, Rustin Saole, Timo Paepule, Micah Lau and Kealoha Porlas are on the front line, serving as top-end blockers and on-side-kick receivers.
Jason Laumoli, Brashton Satele and Siave Seti form the wedge.
The kick returners are Malcolm Lane and Kealoha Pilares.
Yes, it's going to be heck for the announcers with Kealoha Porlas and Kealoha Pilares on the same unit.

Florida Ted has traveled the world, encountering several cultures.
Perhaps that's why he was an easy fit in Warrior Nation.
Florida Ted, who was our first No. 200 poster, brings us intelligent and multi-cultured perspectives each day.
Here's Ted, in his own words:

"On February, 25th, 1947, I was ejected onto this Planet. Growing up in post-war Germany was a somewhat mixed blessing. As a child, the ruins all around me seemed more like playgrounds, rather than something evil or sinister. But once I'd reached my pre-teens, they'd all disappeared as if by strange magic. This semi innocent period was soon followed by the brutal awareness of what my country had wrought upon the world. To this day I still shudder sometimes when my thoughts return to that period.

"My desire to leave was overwhelming and right after high school I signed on to the four mast School Ship "Deutschland ," moored in Bremen, Germany. The happiest 10 years of my live followed. I signed up on all kinds of specialty ships, with better pay and longer shore leaves. For the next 10 years at sea I've experienced every human condition and every natural phenomenon known to man. St. Elmo's fire, northern lights, hurricanes, tornados, earth quakes, locust swarms, sandstorms and tidal waves. I've met every human race and culture in their natural environment. I've been in a Freighter Collision in the cold Northern Atlantic, Russia during the Cold War, lived with Bhuddist Monks in a remote Malaysian Monastery. I went up the Niger River on a genuine safari with the natives and saw a village, barely touched by "civilization." We almost expected Dr. Livingston to walk out of the jungle. 1969 was spent in Tobruk, Lybia, where we witnessed Qaddafi's revolution. Many of the troubles we're facing today I saw brewing that long ago, when he took the country away from then ruler King Idris. On the outskirts of Capetown I sat in shanty shacks, discussing the beginnings of the apartheid revolution and their plight with the natives.

"My last Ship was the Research Vessel "Valdivia", which brought me to the beautiful shores of Hawai‘i in 1971. I had found my home, it felt right from the moment I stepped on shore. Over the years I operated various small businesses with the last being 'Grace House Association', a non-profit, long term Alcohol and Drug Rehab facility. Before I crashed and burned, we had 118 beds available. I didn't know then, that the big boys in the do-good business do not take too kindly to the small guys that grow too fast. Well, now I live in Clearwater, Florida for about 14 month, trying to rebuild my life and be closer to my grand children, while they're still small. By the time my wife and I are 65, we hope to be back in our beloved Islands.

"A large Hawai‘i resident named George Kiesel (lol), whom I had become friends with, taught me all the American sports during the Termite Palace days. Needless to say, always UH games. That's how I became a rabid UH fan to this day and no other team will ever occupy the same place in my heart, including the German National Soccer Team. This blog has helped me many times when I get those sudden attacks of home sickness. I've checked out many blogs in Hawai‘i and around the country, there is no other that comes close to a tight-knit Hawai‘i community like this one.. It will become a growing fixture in cyber space. Aloha! Go, Warriors."

Tomorrow we meet "Al."

By not editing Ted's bio, ST managed to keep the tone and flavor of this German ex-patriate. Way to go, Ted! It seems you've been everwhere. Why don't you self-publish a memoir?

Also, congratulations to Brian Kajiyama, who continues to inspire me.

Congratulations to BrianK! I hope you can post to your blog more often.

FLted - Wow! Terrific write-up and even more impressive life-story! I don't know if you kept a journal. I think it would be great for you to write-down your stories. One of our fellow Tsaiko authors can help you. If for nothing else, your grandchildren would have a great written history of their illustrious, worldly grandpa!

Morning, Tsaikos. The grandsons are down for a nap, before we head down to St. Augustine, the oldest town in the USA, so I have some time to blog a little.

It's nice and weird at the same time to see your story in print.

Gigi, thanks for the encouragement. I'm slowly working on it. I've wrote bits and pieces and am trying to connect it all to make it flow. I'm also trying to work in the various philosophies I've learned and experienced. Not an easy task. My goal is to have it all done by 65. some stories border on the unbelievable and have never told anyone.

brew808, Diesel, Thanks for your nice words.

Diesel, the sad part is that a lot of the world has become very ugly and dangerous. Many countries I've been to and roamed freely from the 60's to the 70's, I would not want to go back to. Take Nigeria for instance, I was in Lagos when it was a typical african river town, dealing mostly in precious woods like mahagony, teak and iron woods. Look at it today. Gleeming, fancy High risers, surrounded by the most hideous slums one can imagine, you get my point. And don't get me started about the middle east, big, fat male egos stuck in the dark ages everywhere. Bottom line though, practically all problems we are dealing with geopolitically today were caused by european colonialists, but that's an whole other story.....

Ooops' grandsons are up, gotta go, will be back later, Aloha, gang.

RE: Kealoha Porlas and Kealoha Pilares.

Looks like it will a good ole test for Papa Leahey and maybe he can silence all of his critics when they say that he has lost a step or two.

But perhaps the viewers at home MAY not even notice the difference between the two, well, unless it's their families.

But speaking of Kealoha Pilares, I personally am rooting for this local boy to take the #1 RB spot.

NOTHING against Leon Wright-Jackson, but as BC mentioned on Friday morning's show, that Pilares may very well have an edge, system-wise, over LWJ.

I have yet to see any recent footage of LWJ, and I havent had the chance to check out any of the videos Princess Leila shot, but I was real impressed after watching Pilares back in the spring.

I have a feeling that they MAY rotate them in the first couple of games, but hey, having two guys of this running caliber is a good thing to wonder about.

Old Time UH Fan probably can confirm, but I was at the practice for a while this morning. My rough estimation was about 200 people. When Jimmy Asato was up there, I think spectators could be counted on two hands (well, maybe two hands and one foot). And yes, it was hot! The Satele's were under the banyan (?) tree on the ewa end of the practice field with lots of shade!

ST = thanks for the summation.

“Wow. My first (game). It was a very exciting experience just seeing the game atmosphere – finally playing against someone else besides each other. I learned from that game. I did some good things, did some bad things, but the main thing is to get better. I’ll just work on it at practice and get ready for the next opponent.

It was the first time I have ever been rushing like that in a two-minute type deal at the end of the game but it was just get better from it, learn from it so the next time it comes up I’m better.

Peaches and I just got back from our quarterly doctor scolding checkup. It was a hectic morning with my sister-in-law calling and now trying to drag my brother to what is now officially a family reunion cruise at the end of this month. Very last-minute and my brother is as hesitant as gigi to get underway... :-) But my brother has good reason from hanabatah boat days--at least with gigi, they tied her to the rail. As with brothers, I didn't want to waste my rope. :-)

FloridaTed -- wow...I envy your experiences. If I could do it over again, I would go to sea too. Almost did, but fate led elsewhere to small boats. Takes more courage these days. Now, on this side of life's time line, we can usually only be passengers on ships, not crew. Would like to hear your sea stories someday!

Thank you for getting us these personal snippets of our Warriors! The shots of the fans and the guys on the sidelines are great! We even get to see BrianK. Just returned from a great day in St.Augustine and the beach with my little grandsons. Now they look spanish-hawaiian, with snow white buds, too funny, lol.

Just turned on the TV and saw Mauia make a seven yard catch in the flats. The only gain on that drive for the Dolphins.

From what I gather, it looks like our defense is shaping up pretty good. If they're capable of giving the best offense in the nation occasional fits that early in camp, sure bodes well for our schedule. Could we get this season started already? Please?

Las Vegas, actually I've learned most of my english in Hawaii. Back then my other languages were spanish and french, most of it rusted away. I've lived in Hawaii for 35 years, after all that time, I better speak the language right, lol.

Brown still in, with Reagan Mauia at fullback. Martin at TE. Ginn at WR, with Hagan.

Drew Mormino beaten.

Green: 2 of 6 for 18 yards.

Brown: 8 carries, 8 yards.

Pressure up middle on Green. (Hadnot pushed back). Goes down. Gets up. (Well, that's a good thing, right?)

3rd and 15: Flag. Very low throw for Martin. Incomplete.

(OK, maybe it wasn't a good thing).

Offsides.

3rd-and-10: Pocket collapses. Green whipsawed. Fumbles. (Most guilty: Alabi).

Choice of NY cut, filet mignon, prime rib, or grilled salmon...we both chose NY. Soup/salad, all-you-can eat bread (we ate a ton, especially my kids), and any appetizer (the sampler platter is huge and filled both my kids up). Plus, we got to choose any dessert and I like the cheesecake there.

All that for $33 (before tax), plus Lori won a $25 gift card from some radio station thing. So, the tip was about the same as the bill after the gift card was applied!

Amazing to me that Rick Ankiel hit 2 HRs today.

Ankiel homered twice and drove in three runs, the latest power display by the former pitcher, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-1 on Saturday.

Ankiel, who scored three times, hit the first pitch he saw in the first and seventh innings to right field, giving him three home runs since he was called up from Triple-A Memphis on Thursday.

After an embarrassing bout of wildness and an arm injury, the one-time phenom scrapped his pitching career during spring training in 2005. He capped his first game back in the majors - as an outfielder - with a three-run homer against San Diego on Thursday.

The OL got blamed for Trent Green's struggles in the game.

Green, the Dolphins' biggest offseason acquisition, took every snap in the first half and led the Dolphins to just four first downs in six possessions. He exited amid boos from the crowd at Dolphin Stadium in four of his last five drives, and led Miami to only one scoring drive - a 26-yard field goal by Jay Feely.

"It's a crazy business," said Green, who added he didn't hear the jeers. "People can respond to different things. I don't take a lot of that too much to heart being that it's the first preseason game. That's why you play preseason games."

Miami coach Cam Cameron pinned much of the early woes on the offensive line.

"He is still clever in the pocket," Cameron said. "We'll get our protection units squared away."

Vince Young was suspended from today's preseason game. A team leader cannot do that, especially one who needs as much preseason work as possible.

Fisher did not specify what rule Young had broken. But The (Nashville) Tennessean reported on its Web site that Young, the league's 2006 offensive rookie of the year, violated a curfew by spending a night at home instead of in the hotel where the team is headquartered during training camp.

Q&A with Philly Offensive Coordinator Mornhinweg. Nothing about Nate of course, but Moats news is relevant:

On his impressions of RB Ryan Moats: "We strive for that high-level of play on a consistent basis, and we just have to have that at all positions. Ryan is working hard. He's a very hard worker; he's a diligent worker. His study habits are excellent. He's striving to play at that high level because he can play at a really high level, and he's striving to do that on a consistent basis. He sure is a talent, now. He's an excellent ballcarrier."

On whether Moats has a problem with his grip on the football that makes him prone to fumbles: "No. He'll be okay with that. Some of that is focus and concentration with ball security. In the NFL, it's different. He'll continue to emphasize it to himself, and I would expect him to keep the ball off of the ground."

DPK,

Hamilton is 1-6 now even though their RB won 2 Player-of-the-week awards for his dominating performances in several games. The only way they can stop him is to stack the D against the run...and Maas has not been taking advantage of it! The D has been playing well, the RB is doing great, the WRs are considered a strength...I don't think that my opinion that Timmy should be playing is out of line.

Having a dominant RB that forces the D to key on him at all times seems like an ideal situation to play a rookie QB.

"If you're trying to win a tournament like this, he's the wrong guy to let get out ahead of you," Scott Verplank said after a 74 that made him look more like a bystander than a contender.

The UCLA WR coach was reinstated to the coaching staff. The 3 prior convictions that the AD apparently didn't know about were glossed over...

Scott has a criminal record, admitting guilt to separate misdemeanor concealed weapons charges in 1996 and 2005, and misdemeanor disturbing the peace in 2002. UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero has said the athletic department was unaware of that when Scott was hired.

the ajitama is derived from a partly boiled egg that has been dipped in a sauce.

and where else will serve a pitcher of coke for 2 bucks!!!

Miami's offensive line is getting killed in the press right now.

The Dolphins offensive line has a long way to go before it can be mediocre.

I wish I could tell you things will work out for the line because last night's horrible performance was only the first preseason game. Or maybe I could say things aren't that bad because the offense hadn't put together a game plan for Jacksonville.

I wish I could tell you the problems were a mirage that will go away soon in the reality of a regular season.

They're not.

The Dolphins offensive line is looking worse now than it did last year. Yes, worse. The unit has no cohesiveness, no chemistry and no depth.
Permalink 08/11/07 @ 21:29
Rookie guard Drew Mormino, who I believe will be a good pro once he gains some muscle and experience, looked overmatched at times. Rookie center Samson Satele didn't really move the pile forward with any consistency. And that stuff about the Dolphins didn't look good because they didn't game-plan?

Well, the Jags didn't game plan, either. They didn't run stunts or blitzes. It was straight man on man stuff and the Miami men generally lost.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are some changes before the team plays again Thursday. And I know general manager Randy Mueller is looking (really hard, I hope) for a veteran guard to put alongside Satele so Mormino can go to the bench and have the redshirt learning year he needs.

The offensive line wasn't impressive, either. The group allowed the offense to muster one first down during three drives in the first quarter (and that took a fourth-down conversion to make). The Jaguars first-team defense only played two of those series.

''We haven't blocked anybody yet, and if you don't block anybody, you aren't going to score many points,'' Cameron said at halftime.

Green also was dealing with an offensive line that continues to change. The Dolphins shifted Rex Hadnot back to right guard after listing sixth-round draft pick Drew Mormino as the team's first-team guard on the depth chart. Mormino shifted to left guard in place of Chris Liwienski.

The Dolphins can take comfort in one aspect of a lackluster debut of the offense: It's early. As players continue to develop -- and Green continues to learn the system -- the curve for progress should be sharp.

That's when fullback Reagan Mauia helped spring Jesse Chatman on his third-quarter 74-yard touchdown run.

Satele said he needs to make his line calls faster.

''Sometimes, I take longer than I'm supposed to and the clock is clicking down and we've got to rush things,'' he said.

The offensive line that is a hard-hat area of reconstruction was blown back from the scrimmage line on several occasions. It also didn't help that starting left tackle Vernon Carey injured his knee in the first quarter.

Julius Wilson, an undrafted rookie free agent out of mighty Alabama-Birmingham, entered the game as Carey's backup, illustrating the fragile nature and lack of depth of Miami's front line.

''On the offensive line we're looking for a veteran, a guy with some moxie that's been through it to help [rookie center Samson] Satele with his communication and say everything is going to be OK when things go bad,'' Mueller said in an interview during the broadcast.

``We need that.''

VETERAN LEADERSHIP

Hello? That veteran offensive lineman is Pete Kendall who plays for the Jets only because they have refused to release him despite his repeated requests. If Kendall is released by New York, the Dolphins should, must, try to sign him.
Permalink 08/11/07 @ 21:36
Julius Wilson, an undrafted free agent from Alabama-Birmingham, replaced Carey and played with the first unit the rest of the half. Wilson, center Samson Satele and left guard Drew Mormino comprised an all-rookie left side for the Dolphins.

Garret - Thanks for the updates. It looks like the only solid piece of the O-Line is Samson and they want to get him some help.

Also, great to hear Reagan getting some playing time and trying to capitalize.

Yes, the first-team offense rushed for 14 yards on 11 carries in the first half, and Green was sacked twice as he went 6-for-15 passing, with an interception. But rookie center Samson Satele said that all things considered - a new playbook, several new linemen and the tough matchup against defenders Marcus Stroud and John Henderson - the offensive line wasn't that bad.

"At one point we had three rookies in there with the first squad," Satele said, referring to himself, guard Drew Mormino and tackle Julius Wilson. "When we get jelled together, we'll get Ronnie Brown out there."

Brown rushed for 8 yards on eight carries as the first-team offense managed three points on seven first-half possessions. But Green took a couple of big hits in addition to the sacks and was forced to scramble out of the pocket several times when his protection broke down.

"I never like seeing my quarterback get hit like that," Satele said. "I told him, 'We'll try not to get you touched as much this season.' "

Did Tala play at all in the game? According to this, the #1 OL played the 1st half, and the #2 OL played the 2nd half, and Tala wasn't on either line.

The second team - featuring Wilson and L.J. Shelton at tackle, Chris Liwienski and Dan Stevenson at guard and Johnathan Ingram at center - played the entire second half, and performed much better. The Dolphins compiled 125 rushing yards in the half, including a 74-yard touchdown run by Jesse Chatman.

Rich,

I'm glad that you liked the updates. It has been obvious to everyone (including the Jets, unfortunately) that Kendell wants out of NY and that Miami wants him and that he wants to play for Miami. I'm glad that Samson stood up and took the criticism, blamed himself for not getting the line calls done quicker, and showed his determination in how they would get better as an OL.

I'm very glad that Reagan is getting so much playing time at FB and that he might even get some work at TB. Although, the guy at #2 TB (Chatman) who he jumped ahead of for reps earlier this week had the 74-yard TD run and cemented his TB spot.

I'm worried about Tala because he was demoted to 3rd team just a couple of days ago and that could be a difference between a roster spot and a practice squad spot or being cut.

At least this note points out that the Jags' defense was ranked #2 last season.

The lack of blocking up front certainly didn't help a rusty, out-of-sync Green, whose most notable accomplishment in his Dolphins debut was merely surviving a brutal first half in which he completed 6 of 15 passes for 60 yards and a 24.3 passer rating, while fumbling and getting sacked twice.

The ever-evolving starting offensive line was ineffective as starting right guard Rex Hadnot, first-time starting right tackle Anthony Alabi, rookie center Samson Satele and rookie left guard Drew Mormino seemed to be overmatched at times against the Jaguars' second-ranked defense. They provided no creases for starting running back Ronnie Brown (8 yards on eight carries) to slither through.

I like the reference to Tecmo Bowl.

Jesse Chatman on his 74-yard touchdown run. "I felt them," he said of the chasing Jaguars. "But like I was telling the fellas on the sideline, I had to hit them with the Tecmo Bowl and go with the angle on them. That's why I worked hard all offseason. Me and Az Hakim, we worked out in San Diego, and the workout that we do, it gets you right. That's why I was able to lose all the weight that I lost."

While Samson Satele has been penciled in as the Dolphins starting center since midway through the team's offseason workouts, one of the surprises of training camp has been the play of rookie Drew Mormino.

The sixth-round pick started at right guard Saturday night and was the subject of a funny sound bite courtesy of Dolphins general manager Randy Mueller.

Speaking on the local television broadcast Mueller said Dolphins scouts who had gone to Central Michigan to scout tackle Joe Staley had raved about Mormino, and it wasn't long after the team drafted him that he could see the team might have gotten a steal.

"He was here about a week and Zach (Thomas) was ticked at him," Mueller said. "So I knew we had something."

Kobe's favorite mouthpiece, ESPN.com's Ric Bucher, has already floated the possibility that Kobe may skip camp.

This seems at great odds with Kobe the grand competitor. It should be noted, however, he is renowned for his fabulous work ethic and traditionally spends offseasons in early morning practice sessions at the team's ElSegundo facility.

Too bad for the people who participated in the NFL QB Challenge.

The "NFL Quarterback Challenge" -- which was supposed to air on ESPN this month -- may never see the light of day.

Why? Because Michael Vick was in the annual skills competition, taped in May, and the NFL is trying to erase all traces of his existence.

"All scheduled airings are canceled at this time," Pilar Bush, tourism director for the Cayman Islands, told the Caymanian Compass. The Caymans paid to host the event.

Tons of articles about Cleveland's QB situation, but I've read over 10 articles so far and NONE mention Mel. A draft pick that gets a sack should get a mention! A lot was mentioned about Cleveland's top 3 draft picks, but nobody so far has done a round-up of all of their draft picks for the game.

Rookie Brady Quinn stood with a clipboard and studied his Cleveland playbook during his first NFL preseason game, watching as Frye and Anderson duked it out for a job the former Notre Dame star hopes to someday own.

Sizing up the battle for roster spots for Philly:

HALFBACK

It really seems to come down to a couple of answers the Eagles need to provide in the next few weeks: Do they keep three halfbacks or do they keep four halfbacks? If they go with four, do they keep Ryan Moats or do they keep Nate Ilaoa?

Look for Moats, Ilaoa and Tony Hunt to carry the ground game load throughout the preseason. There is no sense wasting time Brian Westbrook or Correll Buckhalter in these games. Hunt is going to make the team after his stronger-every-day training camp. Moats was maddening at Lehigh; great at times and then fumble-prone too often. Ilaoa showed flashes, and he needs to put everything together to have a chance to make the team.

Q&A with Philly's starting RB Westbrook.
On the development of the young running backs: "I think those guys have been developing pretty well. (RB) Tony (Hunt) has been doing very well, he's coming along. He's learning the offense and things like that. (RB) Nate (Ilaoa) is coming along as well. It's just a matter of time for those guys to get in and get enough plays under their belt."

On how exciting it is to see their development: "It's exciting to see the development. I saw how Tony has developed between the first camp and now. He's developed quite a bit. Nate has come along as well. It's going to be a little tougher for Nate, because he doesn't get as many reps in practice, going with the threes and fours. Those guys have been doing a great job of picking up the plays and asking the questions when they don't have quite the understanding that they need. It's exciting for those guys and it will be exciting for them with their first opportunity out there on the field on Monday."

"I looked at Hud (offensive line Hudson Houck) and I said, 'Now Hud, you and I have played with two rookies in the offensive line with the first group before but we've never played with three," Cameron said. "I looked at him and he looked at me and we kind of chuckled, so it was interesting."

Cameron said Wilson held his own and it didn't look like it was too big for him, especially after going against Jason Taylor in practice. Wilson was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Alabama-Birmingham.

It turns out that the President of the University of South Carolina has a bad history with football coaches...so maybe Spurrier has some valid complaints.

The only surprise is that there is really no surprise.

Once again, Andrew Sorensen -- the president of the University of South Carolina -- has reared his ugly head and is wreaking havoc with a successful, top-notch head football coach.

The man who played a hand in putting Alabama in the dumpster by running Gene Stallings off and then making a series of idiotic decisions with the athletic department now is pushing Steve Spurrier close to the edge in Columbia, S.C.

While I knew of Sorensen's arrogance at Alabama, I wondered if the leopard had changed his spots after the move to South Carolina. But last September, I was roaming the sidelines of Williams-Bryce Stadium before the Thursday night game between Auburn and South Carolina. Suddenly, I looked up and there was the little man himself, bowtie snugly in place, looking like the groom on top of the wedding cake. He was strutting along the sidelines and barking out orders to his minions.

It reminded me of a quotation once uttered at a meeting of the Mobile Bar Association by Danny Sheridan.

"When Sorensen was hired (at Alabama), I called a member of the Florida Board of Regents to find out about him," Sheridan said. "He told me Sorensen had applied to a lot schools and was turned down by everyone but Alabama. He said succinctly, 'We owe Alabama big-time for taking that elitist wannabe off our hands.'"

This Michigan reporter comes down hard on the side of Harbaugh in the Michigan academics dispute.

It doesn't matter if you're right. Silence equals subservience.

Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh broke the code last spring when he openly called out his alma mater for softening its academic standards for football players in relation to the rest of the student community.

The initial response to Harbaugh's "revelation" outside of the Michigan inner sanctum was "tell us something we didn't already know."

It was the equivalent of CNN interrupting regularly scheduled programming with a "Breaking News" alert: This just in from Baghdad. Military sources acknowledge it's dangerous in Iraq.

But Michigan's recent retaliation, questioning Harbaugh's loyalty to the cause and his values as a "Michigan man," was excessive in its vitriol and revealing in its hypocrisy.

The problem is that Michigan made this a bigger issue than necessary. It didn't even try to logically counter Harbaugh's assertions with a valid defense of the general studies program that came under question in a recent ESPN.com column by Pat Forde.

The program has a curriculum that provides more flexibility than others in the liberal arts, leaving it entirely to the discretion of the student as to how much or how little he'll or she'll take advantage of the program.

A university academic official told ESPN.com that only 1% of the Michigan student body majors in general studies, yet according to the 2007 Michigan football media guide released last week, 30 of the 47 Wolverines declaring a major chose general studies.

That's more than 60%, suggesting Harbaugh might be closer to the facts than Michigan might like. But it's hardly an inconvenient truth.

Big impact expected by moving the kickoffs to the 30.

The NCAA will mirror the NFL by moving the kickoff from the 35-yard line to the 30. What does 5 yards mean? Well, it's not enough for a driveway or a putting green, but on a kickoff, it could mean the game.

Or the college game as we know it.

"I think it could change college football as much as anything we've ever seen," Texas coach Mack Brown said.

"I spent three years in the NFL, so it's not a shock to my system," Colorado State special-teams coach Dave Arnold said, "but it's a shock to the college football system."

Added Missouri coach Gary Pinkel: "It'll be a huge impact. Obviously, it depends on your kicker."

Coaches are already putting more starters on their kickoff teams to ensure improved tackling. Return teams might place skill-position players up front to better field kicks dribbling along the ground.

"I'll tell you what it means," Arnold said. "On the second day of practice, we worked on kickoff returns."

That's nothing. Kansas State worked on kickoffs from the 30 during spring practice.

"Ask our defensive coaches and they throw up," Brown said. "We spent more time on kickoff coverage and kickoffs than any time since I've been here. It's a huge factor."

What to do? Improve the kickoff units, coaches say. Last season, Colorado State used only three starters on kickoff coverage. This year, Arnold said, it will probably use five. The negative is that kickoffs might have the highest percentage of injuries in the game.

"We might've kicked off four times in a game, and none of them were returned. That saves a lot of wear and tear. Now you turn around and we're coming up the field and they're banging, crunching. Wow! You get your best linebacker out there and some guy comes around and whacks him."

Yes – so where is the “al” biography? What’s with the delay? Is this an ST, ‘Tiser marketing ploy? Or:

- al’s ghost-writer DPK is struggling to condense the al biography into two lines,

- the ‘Tiser staff is scrambling to check (fact checking) out al’s unbelievable stories,

- or the copyright attorney’s have gotten involved and the bidding by several publishing houses has gone crazy – 7 figures,

- or ST lost his Mac and can’t find any coworkers willing to post to his blog this morning,

- or “al” doesn’t really exist….
