The Warrior Beat
Stephen Tsai knows University of Hawai'i sports, down to the last decimal of a 40-yard dash. He's lived UH sports since 1987. Few reporters get the inside information like he does. What Tsai writes is a daily must read.

Hawai‘i's got talent

June Jones gave rave reviews to last nght's talent show.
"It was the best ever," Jones said.
Only the seniors were excused from performing. The show featured skits and musical performances.
Earlier, this week, Jones brought in a hypnotist. Some players were brought on stage and, when a specific word was uttered, they would dance or do other stunts.
To be sure, no team bonds like the Warriors.

Every ticket and sponsorship has been sold for tomorrow night's Warrior Quarterbacks for Charity dinner.
Sponsorships alone brought in $160,000,

Even Colt Brennan is wondering when some of the stories are supposed to appear in the national media. That little blurb in Sports Illustrated doesn't count.
For the past three week, each of Brennan's Sundays have been filled with photo shoots and day-in-the-life stories. Brennan has remained upeat and cooperative. Once, a national magazine spent a couple of hours shooting photos of Brennan. It was decided the pictures weren't right, and Brennan had to spend a couple of hours the following weekend posing for the same magazine.
Brennan's reaction? He apologized to the local media for having to put up with the intrusion — a gesture that was unnecessary but typical of Brennan's thoughtful character.

A-House is my neighbor, but more importantly, he has become a great resident of this blog.
His dead-on observations make him the voice of reason and wisdom.
He also is a long-time Warrior fan, buying season tickets since LBJ's Administration.
Please meet A-House:

After reading all the impressive “bios” posted, I’m convinced that my neighbor, ST, made me post on Sunday since very few lurk on days without practice.

My daughter introduced me to this blog last September, and I’m glad she did as the individuals I have met so far are genuinely gifted individuals and great supporters of UH athletics, especially football!

I grew up in a small “pineapple” town on Kauai with 2 brothers and 3 sisters and many dogs, cats, chickens, pigs, cows, etc. Many happy hours were spent swimming in neighboring reservoirs, fishing and building canoes, etc. What stands apart from my other kid-time memories are the two fishing trips with my Dad to the island of Niihau. My father had befriended the Robinson family who granted us permission to land and camp overnight. As we approached land, the sand looked so clean, but they ”crunched” when I stepped on it; they were Niihau shells by the hundreds of thousands.

After graduating from UH with a BBA in Personnel & Industrial Relations, I enlisted in the Army with the purpose of securing the highest security clearance obtainable. Advanced Individual Training was spent at Fort Devens, MA, at the Army Security Agency School. Upon graduating, I discovered that USSR had a standing offer of 10,000 rupees reward for my knowledge. I graduated from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA, with a commission in Armor and completed “jump school” immediately thereafter. I retired as a Colonel after 27 years and 9 months in the regular Army and Army Reserve. My most memorable post was in Bangladesh in 1991 where I saw how residents in a “third world” country existed.

I have been married for 37 years to a very special person and we are blessed with a wonderful daughter and son. I'm still trying to improve as a husband and father. Spent the past 39 years in the insurance industry. Completed the Honolulu Marathon in 3 hours 52 minutes and 48 seconds at age 42 and finished the Windward Marathon two years later in 3 hours 30 minutes and 25 seconds.

We have been football season ticket holders since 1968 and attended every game since then. At one time, we had season tickets for UH football, baseball, men’s/women’s volleyball, and men’s basketball.

Family vacations have taken us to all the major Hawaiian Islands; sports trip to the Pro Football Hall of Fame (Canton), Baseball Hall of Fame (Cooperstown), and the Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa; Far East; California; East Coast (including Canada) and Las Vegas.

You are especially lucky for having a daughter who is a fan of UH sports...I hope that my daughters will be like that. Was your daughter at the lunch at Makinos that I got to go to?

Greetings, A-House. Astonishing, simply astonishing, seeing the high level of citizenry on this blog. A-House, it's an honor to meet you, even though, it's only through this blog. Maybe one day we can rectify this. I know they are securely locked up in your brain, but it would be a heck of a lot of fun to sit in a quiet corner with you and wisper about a few of uncle Sam's secrets. Thanks for sharing some of your life with us.

If HF ever reads these Bios, maybe he would be a little more careful of how he refers to our bloggers(Lol).Aloha.

Tombo sent me this note about Chad Mock. This would explain why he didn't have any catches in B.C.'s game on Friday.

The Lions have one change to their 46 man roster this week. Added to the roster is Offensive Lineman Lorne Plante. Removed from the roster is Receiver Chad Mock.

Today is full of good reads. A-Houses bio, all the good stuff on the Warriors, a 6'10" chinese recruit and on and on.

If our defense can hang with our offense like they do, after learning a new system in camp, that bodes extremely well for this season. Like I've been saying for a while, our defense will shock a lot of people this year. They will be primed for Florida next year. But this year they will blind side a lot of opponents, who won't know what hit'em, especially during the first two thirds of the season.

Tremendous job Bob Nash is doing, considering the late start he had. The BB season could become real exciting after all.
Permalink 08/19/07 @ 11:39
I'm trying to figure out Chad Mock's CFL status. On 7/27 he was added to the roster:

ROSTER 27-Jul-07

BC ADD IMP Gino GUIDUGLI (QB) Cincinnati

BC ADD IMP Chad MOCK (WR) Hawaii
Permalink 08/19/07 @ 11:40
On 8/15 Chad was taken off B.C.'s roster.

A-House –

Wow, terrific biography. Thank you for sharing your story with us. And THANK YOU for your service to our country! I hope to meet you in person some day and shake your hand!

I’m sure there are very, very few people that have visited Niihau. I think you might as well visit all eight “major” islands – or have you already done this?

One more question please – what’s with the “A-House” nickname?
Permalink 08/19/07 @ 11:45
On 8/16 Chad was added to B.C.'s inactive list. B.C. added an OL to take Chad's spot on the roster, moving that OL from their inactive list to the active roster.

So, at least Chad wasn't cut but he is inactive now. I don't understand the move because Chad had been catching more passes lately and I believe he scored a TD in the game before he was put on the inactive list.

ROSTER 16-Aug-07

BC ADD NIP Lorne PLANTE (OL) Manitoba

NON-ACTIVE 16-Aug-07

BC ADD IMP Chad MOCK (WR) Hawaii

BC REM SGD NIP Lorne PLANTE (OL) Manitoba

Analysis from the 49ers game from the San Jose Mercury News. URL too long for me to post...I don't want to break the blog again.

Smith was acurate on virtually every pass he was not throwing away. I think the only exceptions were a deep ball to Darrell Jackson that got taken by the wind, and an intermediate toss to Lelie towards the end of the half. But the latter play looked more like miscommunication than inaccuracy — Lelie looked like he was supposed to stop on his route rather than continuing on to the post. Smith is clearly in sync with his first-string receivers, particularly Jackson and Vernon Davis.

Same SJ Mercury News analysis. Really negative about Sopoaga.

Isaac Sopoaga simply cannot play nose tackle in the 3-4 defense. This is a guy who was touted three years ago as the strongest player coming out of the draft. Well, he wasn’t. He might have been able to bench press a lot, but his leg strength, his leverage and his technique are utterly lacking. And those are fare more important measures than the bench press. In the past two preseason games, Sopoaga has been getting blown of the line of scrimmage consistently, and not just when he’s double-teamed. Jeremy Newberry in particular had a field day with him. While the Raiders’ ability to move the ball on the ground is not necessarily cause for alarm since all three starting defensive linemen sat out the game, the 49ers better hope Aubrayo Franklin can hold the nose or they may find themselves reverting back to a 4-3 for the third year in a row. (It is difficult to tell whether Rookie Joe Cohen could do a better job than Sopoaga as backup NT, because he has only played against third-stringers.)

The 2nd overall draft pick from 2003 is now going to try to play in the CFL. Too bad for him that their training camps are over and the CFL season is about 1/3 done.
Former Detroit Lions receiver Charles Rogers of Michigan State is likely to sign with a Canadian Football League team, ESPN.com is reporting.

"He wants to play again and it's the best opportunity for him to show he can play again," Rogers' agent, Jason Fletcher, is quoted as saying.

Rogers, the second overall pick in the 2003 NFL draft, played for the Lions for three seasons before being released after training camp in 2006.

Rogers, 26, caught 36 passes for 440 yards and four touchdowns in his NFL career.

Reading and seeing all the segments about Colt as a potential Heisman Trophy winner, it seems he's not getting any love and respect.
I guess the Warriors will have to show the nation what he's about. If our defense is as good as I think it is then we'll get the ball back more often, which means Colt has more opportunities to score.
Personally, Colt has a good shot, but UH needs to run the table and win convincingly every single week. This morning talk show on ESPN 1420 w/ Phil Steele, the hosts think UH will score more than 100 points against N. Colorado and C. Southern.
I said on your blog on 5/19 that UH would score 100+ points in our first game. We'll see very soon. I'm all jacked-up. Thanks for all your stories and reporting. It's great.

But just in case, Jones has begun tutoring Brennan not only on the run-and-shoot that he will need this season, but what he will need in the NFL next season and beyond. That is the double major in football.

"He's already teaching me [defensive] fronts, ways to break down fronts, stuff I just never needed to know to be in this offense," Brennan said of his head coach. "Instead of film [sessions with Jones] being 30 or 40 minutes, it's now an hour and five [minutes], where I'm getting a lesson on stuff I never knew before."

For those that been watching practices, how's our run defense looking? I'm guessing that most teams will try to shorten the game and keep our offense off the field by trying to establish the run against us.
Looks solid, 22London. Front seven is definitely the strength of the defense, I'm really looking forward to some hitting.

If not, does anyone know if there is going to be a UH section at the game so I can get tickets in that section? Thanks for your help!

No need to apologize, I don't want to mess up the non-IE blog readers. If I hadn't been running around so much today I'd have posted the link earlier.

ST,

I loved LA Law! That Venus Butterfly episode was pretty funny. I love courtroom dialogue scenes, especially when there are interesting arguments from both perspectives.

LA Law also made me want to be a lawyer. It did get me to publish an article in a Hawaii Legal publication while I was a student at Castle, on Cameras in the Courtroom. We got to interview judges, TV execs, newspaper guys, and even Joe Moore. Joe wasn't very nice to us high school kids, I thought he clearly thought he had better things to do...

Nolan was mostly pleased with his backups on the defensive line, who filled in while all three of his projected starters sat out against the Raiders. Defensive end Marques Douglas missed the game because his wife, Sparkle, gave birth to their second child around kickoff time.

Nolan said nose tackle Isaac Sopoaga played his best game in Nolan's tenure, while rookie end Ray McDonald showed a remarkable knack for being quick off the snap. The 49ers were painfully thin at defensive line in Nolan's first two seasons, but Sopoaga and McDonald should fill holes behind starters Douglas, Bryant Young and Aubrayo Franklin.

I had thought that Lelie would be the 49ers #3 WR. Looks like Jacobs is ahead for that spot, but Lelie had a great game last night.
Taylor Jacobs, who barely played against the Raiders after his wife gave birth on Friday, also received another round of praise, with Nolan calling him the 49ers' No. 3 receiver. The veteran caught just four passes last season after arriving in a training-camp trade with Washington, but has wowed San Francisco's coaches in training camp.

The 49ers also have ample depth behind Jacobs and starters Darrell Jackson and Arnaz Battle - another remarkable development for a club with one of the NFL's worst receiving corps in each of the past four seasons.

"I'd like to keep six (receivers) if there's six that warrant being on the team," Nolan said.

UH is #22 in the Houston Chronicle's Top 25 list.
Permalink 08/19/07 @ 19:01
I still can't believe the Houston Texans took Mario Williams over Reggie Bush and hometown hero Vince Young. How did their faith in David Carr turn out last year? I figured they should have taken Reggie Bush, but Vince might have sold more tickets.

Now let us see what the reviews of Mario Williams are now:

I'm not labeling the guy a bust. I think every player needs up to three years to show whether or not they will live up to their advanced billing while some players show it earlier. Once a player has shown that ability, he gets another couple of years to take the next step. Steve Francis and David Carr "flashed" from time to time with Francis playing at a higher level than Carr, but neither was able to make the next step by five years in.

Mario is a physical freak and yet he doesn't physically dominate clearly inferior talent. He went up against Mike Gandy on Saturday and didn't even really muster much of a pass rush. Mike-freaking-Gandy? I had an NFL scout call me who I don't talk with all that often and he said "Mario looks like he's 'just a guy' out there." It isn't good to be called "just a guy" if you are a 5th round pick. It's really bad if you were the first pick of the draft.

Here is how I see it. Mario's motor is average. If his motor was great do you think average tackles in this league would be able to stick with him considering his quickness and strength? The answer is no. As for pass rushing skills, he's still stuck on bull rush and Kubiak even acknowledged in the press conference that to be a puss rusher in the NFL you have to have a variety of pass rushing moves.

The scariest thing that the Texans face right now (and I'm not sure if they are willing to even entertain the notion yet) is that there is a possibility that Mario Williams doesn't have a burning desire to be great. He hasn't shown that type of intensity and ability to impose his will yet and those are two things to look for. If he doesn't have a burning desire to be great, his ceiling will be much lower than the Texans and their fans have hoped for.

This morning talk show on ESPN 1420 w/ Phil Steele, the hosts think UH will score more than 100 points against N. Colorado and C. Southern.
I said on your blog on 5/19 that UH would score 100+ points in our first game.

Wayne O,

I really doubt the prediction (from the radio guys, not from you) about scoring 100 vs. CSU. They are a good team for their level and 70 would be a lot against them.

I remember your prediction of 100 for UNC, and I just don't think it will happen. JJ would probably call more running plays after awhile, plus remember the clock still runs after UH sacks the UNC QB...I agree with you that the 3rd and 4th stringers will continue to do their best, but by running the ball UH can keep the score to 70 or 80 instead of 100.

Garret - I agree, JJ has been pulling Colt after the 1st half in many games. UH has always tried to take the higher ground in running up the score, unlike other BCS teams. However, the difference this year is that our offense is practicing against a tough 4-3 front with some outstanding backers. This means that with outstanding runners, and being the 1st game, even going to the ground will result in some additional scores. Don't know if we'll get to 100. But I guess it depends on UNC and when they decide to pull their starters. All I can say is stay tuned ...

Nice example of the difference between college and NFL line play.

"Them O-linemen, they're good! They know how to slap your hands down. I was like, 'This ain't college no more,'" said Soliai, selected in the fourth round of of April's draft. "The game speed is a lot different than what I'm used to, and I learned I was playing with zero [technique]. These are some big guys I'm going against, and I've got to move quicker."

Cameron said Saturday he is using only 20 percent of his playbook during the pre-season and hasn't been calling games like he would in the regular season. If the Dolphins were concerned with scoring points, Cameron probably wouldn't have had his team go for it on fourth-and-goal from the 3 against Kansas City on Thursday. Or maybe he wouldn't be so liberal with his substitutions among offensive linemen, receivers and running backs.

"We got a young offense, and I think that's a good thing," Carey said of limiting the playbook. "We're taking baby steps right now, but we're just trying to get ready for the first game."

"They can take it whatever speed they want," center Samson Satele said. "We'll catch up."

Now, that's a great promotion for the Advertiser. For each home game, pass out bobble heads to the first 1,000 fans featuring our favorite sports section staffer. Okay, perhaps bump it up to 35,000 for the Princess and 1,500 for ST.

And in the state championships the paper didn't list all the medalists, instead they referred to the website. It is just one of my pet peeves. The Advertiser publishes all of the finishers in PGA tourneys but cannot list the top 30 boys and 30 girls medalist in the paper.

And yes it takes ... a lot ... lots of practice to shoot. Stacy should try it sometime.

My Bio

I was born in Northeast central, West Virginia.
Pa was a Muskrat wrangler and Ma took in washing from former "Wizard of Oz" cast members, notably the guys who played the flying monkeys.
I was the first im my family to complete my education, having graduated from 6th grade at Cletus P. Bumstickle school of upper learning at age 24, one year ahead of most of my classmates.

Although Pa was respected and well known in his chosen field of work, life was still hard on our little family.
several of my 16 brothers and 14 sisters were kidnapped, shaved down and sold to Russian and Mongolian circuses as Sasquach babies.
I myself suffered tragedy, losing a leg to a hippo during a hunting trip at the West Virginia zoo.
At 26, I was voted Miss Appalachia, I don't think I'm all that pretty, but the judges were looking for petite girls that year and at 6'2" 240 (back then) I must've fit the bill.
looking back I also realize that my cheerful smile may have had an effect too.
what a smile!, I still had most of my bottom row of teeth and had about 6 or 7 upper teeth, I was the envy of all the girls.
After finishing school, I had a short tryout with the Ravens, but was cut from the team when I forgetfully shaved and they realized I was a girl, I had been working out with the first team and was replaced by someone called the "Goose".
Based out of Maryland, I traveled around the east coast wrestling small animals.
I stll hold the Human-Gerbil open weight championship belt.

In search of a better life and tougher critters, I have migrated to Honolulu, where I presently bounce at a club on Keeaumoku st.
I have discovered that the mongoose is a formidable foe but the rock wallabies give up easily once you apply the full nelson.
As for my hope for a better life, things are looking up, I have a new boyfriend who is smart, a great singer and makes great brownies.
I also found a wonderful dentist who may be able to save one or two of my remaining teeth.
My only peeve is that it is hard to buy size 16 shoes in Hawaii, on top of that, once I find a shoe that fits, I've got buy the whole pair, even though my left leg is a pegleg.
I love Hawaii and in order to fit in, I am saving to buy a koa wood pegleg to replace the monkeypod one I bought in Waikiki.

Interesting article on Lelie in the breaking news section of the Advertiser. Not the more positive quotes towards Lelie from Coach Nolan, but clearly the opportunity is there. One sample:

Because of Ashley's size and stride is it more important for him and Alex (Smith) to work together more?

MN: "If he is going to throw to him yes, but if he isn't one of the primary guys, he (Alex) needs to work with the other guys first. He needs to work with the guys who know the best routes, know who to block on running plays, etc. There is a lot more to being a good wide receiver than catching balls. It is a lot more than being tall and fast. When the total picture puts you in the right of getting reps with the first group, you get to work with Alex more. If you don't, you get to work with Trent in the second group and Shaun with the third. If you are showing the ability to get in that next group, yes, we need to get you some more balls."

Interesting how USC cut this player.

USC receiver Jamere Holland was dismissed from the team, Coach Pete Carroll said late Sunday night.

Carroll declined to comment about why Holland was dismissed, but said it was not a violation of team rules.

"It was just the right thing to do," Carroll said.

Carroll said Holland, a redshirt freshman from Pacoima, would remain on scholarship this year, "but would weigh his options I'm sure."

Holland, who played at Woodland Hills Taft High, redshirted last season after breaking his collarbone. He reinjured his collarbone during spring practice and was counseled several times by coaches about a seeming lack of commitment to football.

Holland was the California state 100- and 200-meter champion in 2005 and competed for USC's track team last spring.

Projected 53-man roster for Philly:

Running Backs (4): Westbrook, Buckhalter, Hunt, Tapeh (FB)
Permalink 08/20/07 @ 04:21
At least this article projects Nate as being on the practice squad.

Running backs (4): Ryan Moats goes on Injured Reserve, Nate Ilaoa gets released and then added to the practice squad, and you have your 1-2-3 punch of Brian Westbrook, Correll Buckhalter and rookie Tony Hunt.

Jason Davis got a good opportunity this summer to unseat fullback Thomas Tapeh, but it didn't happen for Davis. Tapeh did nothing notable and neither did Davis.

Hamilton just traded for a WR, giving up their #2 RB (who is good, but their starter is a star and the backup is 31) and a slot receiver.

The struggling Hamilton Tiger-Cats have pulled the trigger on a blockbuster trade, acquiring Saskatchewan star receiver Jason Armstead.

But the former 1,000-yard pass catcher didn't come cheap. Heading out of Steeltown is slotback Corey Holmes and rookie Canadian wide receiver Chris Getzlaf.

"We needed a difference-maker on special teams, and he (Armstead) is a former 1,000-yard receiver," Ticat GM Marcel Desjardins said last night.

"He (Armstead) is a big play waiting to happen when he gets the ball. I think he is one of the more dynamic guys in the league," the Cat GM added.

Interesting college football stat page. Interesting numbers on the effect of moving kickoffs back 5 yards.

Kickoffs from the 30 resulted in 21.1% less touchbacks than kickoffs from the 35. That would average out to about two more returns a game this fall.
Kickoffs from the 30 resulted, on average, with the ball landing at the 8.78 yard line, which was 3.22 yards further into the field of play than kicks from the 35.
The average change in field position on a kick from the 30 was 5.13 yards and the rate of returns for touchdowns was about the same as a kick from the 35.

Notre Dame (with an assist by their local police) kept the news quiet of the alcohol transportation arrest of their top QB recruit. Considering how much coverage Notre Dame gets, I'm surprised they kept it quiet for 2 months!

It has recently come to light that the University of Notre Dame freshman quarterback was cited for transporting alcohol as a minor in connection with a June 23 incident at a local liquor store.

Indiana State Excise Police cited the 19-year-old Clausen and a 23-year-old outside the Belmont Beverage store at 1621 South Bend Ave., near the Notre Dame campus, police said.

Excise police were in an unmarked car outside the store to catch minors attempting to get alcohol, said Lt. Tim Cleveland, a police spokesman.

Clausen, the nation's No. 1 recruit in the last recruiting cycle and currently battling for the starting quarterback job at Notre Dame, received a misdemeanor citation, police said. The 23-year-old, a recent Notre Dame graduate, was cited for inducing a minor to possess alcohol, an infraction.

I know that 5-star QB recruits can be overly praised and hyped...but I hope that nobody with this type of character comes to UH. I trust JJ to judge the character of the recruit...

It was spring game weekend 2006 at Notre Dame, and with one fell swoop, Clausen volunteered to be the permanent poster child for recruiting process excess and entitlement. A police escort led his Hummer Limo to the doorstep of the College Football Hall of Fame, entourage in tow. He flashed a handful of championship rings. A roomful of enablers decked out in their blue and gold roared as he announced his intentions to attend Notre Dame.
