The Warrior Beat
Stephen Tsai knows University of Hawai'i sports, down to the last decimal of a 40-yard dash. He's lived UH sports since 1987. Few reporters get the inside information like he does. What Tsai writes is a daily must read.

Day 16: Warriors are No. 23 in AP poll; practice report, video

The Warriors are ranked No. 23 in the preseason Associated Press media poll.
"That's nice," June Jones said after today's practice at Aloha Stadium. "It will mean more if we're ranked at the end of the season."

New video on today's final practice of fall camp at Aloha Stadium.

We're here at practice at Aloha Stadium.
• Even in practice, June Jones has a solid plan. The Warriors are stationed on the mauka sideline — in the shade.
• Defensive end Tua Mahaley, who joins the team Monday, is in the stands reading Ian Sample's book, "Once a Warrior." He said he's looking for parts about himself. Papa Leahey asked for a book review. Mahaley said it was good so far.
• Don't be concerned about the field-goal kicking. The Warriors were working on the holds, not the kick accuracy.
• The new kickoff spot — at the 30 — does not affect Dan Kelly, who boomed his two kickoffs into the end zone.
• John Fonoti dominated the one-on-one drills between offensive and defensive linemen. Twice he threw down an o-lineman.
• The first skirmish of the year came during one-on-one drills when an o-lineman clothes-lined and on-rushing d-lineman. David Veikune, a witness, said: "It's going to be an interesting scrimmage."
• And it has been. Colt Brennan was in on the first 13 plays, completing 7 of 9 passes.

UH actually broke training camp on Wednesday.
Yesterday, the players were on their own for lunch and dinner.
Starting Monday, the scholarship players will receive training-table meals for breakfast and dinner.

I had a dramatic first encounter with Warrior Mojo in 1979, when we were UH sophomores.
We took a drama class, which wasn't as easy a way to earn three credits as advertised. For the group singing project, a guy was a no-show, leaving a female student to sing solo. Fast forward: the woman became the wife of this blog host; the no-show was Warrior Mojo.
Warrior Mojo is now a successful lawyer with a wonderful family. He also is a passionate UH fan, donating thousands of dollars to the athletic department through the years. On this blog, he offers insightful commentary. When it comes to UH football, Warrior Mojo is never a no-show.
And I hear he's a pretty good singer, too.
Please meet Warrior Mojo:

Hello, my name is WarriorMojo and I come in peace. My heart overflows with goodwill and love for all living things. Except for fans of the donkeys, whether they be of the Denver or Boise variety. Them, I despise.

I attended my first University of Hawaii football game in 1968 when the Cal-Berkeley Golden Bears and their great All American lineman Ed White played the Rainbows at the old Honolulu Stadium. In all honesty I wasn’t that interested in going to the game, but I had little choice as I didn’t know how to change my own diaper at the time. Thankfully, I am quite able to do that now and with only minimal assistance.

In any event sometime in 1970 or 1971 my father decided that we would become UH season ticket holders and proudly selected seats in the “grandstand”, which was really the area behind home plate during baseball season. These weren’t particularly good football seats, but were the only seats in the stadium that were (1) covered by a roof and (2) had seatbacks. I’m not sure which of those factors my dad valued most, but we kept those seats until Aloha Stadium opened. We have had the same seats at Aloha from then until now.

Over the years I have watched some great performances by Hawaii athletes, including current coaches Jones, Lumpkin and Miano. I believe I still have an old program with Coach Lumpkin’s autograph on it. As I recall, he even had hair back then. So did Coach Jones for that matter. There are so many great Hawaii players that I remember over the years, but my favorites will always be Larry Sherrer, Gary Allen and, yes, Colt Brennan.

Had I been blessed with the ability myself, I would have been only too proud to play for the home team after laughing in the face of those recruiters from USC, Notre Dame, Nebraska, et al. Alas, that was not to be, so I paid my own way to a BA in political science and English followed by a JD from the Richardson School of Law. I initially clerked for a federal court judge and then the Hawaii legislature before going into private practice in 1989. So, yes, I am an attorney, but please don’t hate me. Or I’ll sue you.

Aside from Hawaii football, my great passion in life is rock music. I’ve been fortunate to see a ton of concerts in my life, including my faves, U2, on numerous occasions, but I will always regret not going to see the original Lynyrd Skynyrd at the Blaisdell Center. A few months later their plane crashed. What a pity.

Anyway, I’ve always prided myself on being able to find common ground to speak to people in terms both sides can understand. When I was in London some years back, I made it a point to rub my hand against the Rosetta Stone in the hope that some of its symbolic knowledge would be transferred to me. A silly notion, of course, but one that I cling to even today. But I am only human and if I have ever offended anyone here, I do sincerely apologize. Except, of course, if your name is Herman Frazier. You, I am STILL gunning for.

So, in closing, thanks for accepting me into the ranks of the Tsaikos. I’m normally not the type of person to get involved in groups or associations, but I am truly amazed and humbled by the diverse talents and accomplishments of the people in this group. It’s an honor to be accepted here.

I took it because I needed to pump up my GPA. I think I was on double-secret academic probation at the time.
I got a B — and the teacher was my sister's good friend.
Maybe it was because I tried to sing the Commodores' "Just To Be Close To You."

Mc. You are correct about the WAC vs MWC. Why you think they no like play any of the WAC teams. BYU talks a good story, but I remember not too far back, they did not want to play UH anywhere. Look at Wyoming. What about Utah. They recruit heavily in Hawaii, but do you think they would like to play UH. No way. The writer should have written about how teams have avoided playing UH this year and why.

Lots o' good stuff in the sports section today up in the breaking news. According to the pundits, Hawaii needs to go undefeated if Colt is to win the Heisman and for hawaii to earn a BSC bid. That's it in a nutshell. And that my friends is a tall order. It's not easy to go unbeaten, regardless of who you are or who you play. The Warriors have a quest, and it is clearly defined. They enter the fray with a historical top 25 AP ranking, and all the credentials they need. It is going to be very, very exciting to watch them march this season...

Great that AP ranking. I think now the Warriors are a legitimmately ranked team. Now the hard work of the slow climb up the ladder begins Sept. 1. I surely hope that it will help the team to focus, regardless who they have in front of them. They should be well aware now of the big target on their backs.

Mr. Prideperiod -

Kudos to your sentiments expressed in your posting at 3:19 am in yesterday's blog. You are a man of few words/postings - but when you speak, it's all good, honest, and heartfelt. We all should pause and reflect upon your message, your code of conduct. I hope you don’t mind me reposting your message here.
Comment from: prideperiod [Visitor]
We had some very spirited dialogue tonight, which I enjoyed very much. Neither party was right or wrong, but just expressed personal opinions from different perspectives. We are each entitled to our opinion, which is the greatest thing about living in a free country. Our opinions differ about different subjects, but what binds us together is a love for the Warrior football program, and a love for the players. We are like a family, with rivalries and skirmishes between siblings, and sometimes between parents. But in the end, a family will always come together because they are bound by the blood that runs through their veins. We all bleed the same color---- green and black. That blood running through our veins is what binds us together.

With that in mind, please if we can, lets be free to share and debate, but not let it get too personal. I may be wrong to be voicing my opinion in this area, this isn't my blog, and I'm not one of the designated leaders. I'm just a freindly lurker who likes listening and reading all of the input from my fellow brothers and sisters. But to call people out and challenge other posters is something that should be done elsewhere and not within the confines of the blog. Again, I am not directing this to any one or two posters in general, but to all of us. Just a reminder to watch what we say and do, and to mind our manners. If you agree with me or disagree, it doesn't matter. I'm putting it out there anyway. Aloha.

IT IS THE MOST PERFECT FEELING IN THE WORLD TO KNOW THAT YOU HIT A GUY JUST RIGHT, AND YOU HAVE MAXIMIZED THE PHYSICAL PAIN HE CAN FEEL.
YOU FEEL THE LIFE GO OUT OF HIM.

YOU’VE TAKEN ALL OF HIS ENERGY AND YOU HAVE DOMINATED HIM.

THE BIG HIT LIVES FOREVER,
IT BRINGS FEAR AND TREPIDATION,
FACTORS THAT LAST FOR A PLAY, A GAME, OR A LIFETIME.
THE LONG RUNS, THE TOUCHDOWNS AND ALL THAT,
THAT IS THE GLAMOUR.

BUT THE GAME IS ABOUT TAKING A MAN DOWN,
DOMINATING HIM PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY.

Fake to Nate, pass, Nate picked up his man.

3th and one - I formation, Nate gets stopped. no gain. Clearly protecting ball w/ two hands.

QB dive, 1st down.

Nate dive off right, 3 yards.

1-back alignment, Nate gets hand-off, RG, 1 yard. The OL isn't getting off the line.

pass play w/ Nate as safety valve, Nate pauses, QB dumps to where Nate might have been, incompletion.

Mr. Warriormojo,
Sorry but I just can't help myself.

The scene is the darkest jungle in Africa. Two tigers are stalking through the jungle when the one in the rear suddenly reaches out with his tongue and licks the butt of the one in front. The lead tiger turns and says, "Hey, cut it out, alright." The other tiger says sorry and they continue on their way.

After about five minutes the rear tiger suddenly repeats his action. The front tiger turns angrily and says," I said don't do that again!" The rear tiger says "sorry" again and they continue.

After about another five minutes, the rear tiger repeats his action. The front tiger turns and says, "What is it with you, anyway? I said to stop." The rear tiger says, "I really am sorry but I just ate a lawyer and I'm just trying to get the taste out of my mouth."

One day, there was this lawyer who had just bought a new car, and he was eager to show it off to his colleagues, when all of a sudden an eighteen wheeler came out of nowhere and took of the driver's side door with him standing right there. "NOOO!" he screamed, because he knew that no matter how good a mechanic tried to fix it, it never would be the same. Finally, a cop came by, and the lawyer ran up to him yelling. "MY JAGUAR DOOR WAS JUST RUINED BY SOME FOOLISH DRIVER!!!" he exclaimed. "Your a lawyer aren't you?" asked the policeman. "Yes, I am, but what does this have to do with my car?!?!" the lawyer asked. "HA! Your lawyers are always so materialistic. All you care about is your possessions. I bet you didn't even notice that your left arm is missing did you?" the cop said. The lawyer looked down at his side and exclaimed "MY ROLEX!"

Congratulations to UH for being ranked in every significant poll. Hopefully UH can slowly inch upwards as teams ahead of them lose, and that not many teams behind them will jump ahead of them after big wins. If UH can move into the top 18-20 after the SJSU game, then the stretch run (and the inevitable losses when ranked conference teams play each other) will give UH a shot at a BCS bid.

I also hope that TCU loses big to Texas, as some analysts (2 articles have been posted here about this, I believe) think that TCU's superior schedule will be enough to keep them ahead of UH at the end of the season if they end up the season undefeated or even with just the Texas loss if it is a close game.

An elderly patient needed a heart transplant and discussed his options with his doctor. The doctor said, "We have three possible donors. The first donor is a young, healthy athlete who died in an automobile accident. The second donor is a middle-aged businessman who never drank or smoked and who died flying his private jet. And, the third donor is an
attorney who died after practicing law for 30 years. Which do you want?"

"I'll take the lawyer's heart," said the patient. After a successful transplant, the doctor asked the patient why he had chosen the lawyer's heart. "It was easy," explained the patient, "I wanted a heart that hadn't been used."

For those who didn't make it to the end of yesterday's blog, here is that Hawaii business article.

Hawaii is the most expensive state in the nation, by far, for doing business, according to a report by the Milken Institute.

It's the third straight year Hawaii ranked No. 1 on the independent economic think tank's annual Cost-Of-Doing Business Index, which measures wages, taxes, electricity costs and real estate costs for industrial and office space.

scored 151.5, which meant that the overall cost of doing business in the state was about 52 percent higher than the national average. The score was up from 148.4 in 2006 and 143.1 in 2005, according to the report.

Jim Tollefson, president and chief executive of the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, said Hawaii's ranking came as no surprise. “We're doing all we can to improve our ranking,” Tollefson added.

Hawaii had the highest electricity and industrial space costs and ranked second in tax burden.

The Milken Institute said its index indicates each state's comparative advantages or disadvantages in attracting and retaining businesses. Those states with a low cost of doing business have, on average, greater job growth than those with high costs.

“I think it's something we're concerned about, and we continuously look for ways to reduce those costs to make it easy for businesses to start up,” Hawaii economist Pearl Imada Iboshi said.

Wages in the islands, however, were not the highest. Wages in Hawaii ranked 22, despite the high cost of living.

I really liked this note in the article.

It's a long way from Hawaii for two defensive ends in the Great Lakes Classic. Ikaika Alama-Francis is a Detroit rookie via a second-round draft pick. Melila Purcell, who started opposite Alama-Francis for the University of Hawaii last year, is a rookie Round 6 pick with the Browns.

Thank you for the recap of Nate's playing time last night. I think that you are correct that Nate might have trouble making the active roster...but he'll at least make the practice squad.

Philly has a clear top 3 at RB, and they aren't giving Nate many reps in practice except for days when several of them were out with injury. At least he got a lot of playing time last night, though I wish the OL had given him room to really show what he could do.

Good comment about Samson.

Question: In your opinion, do the guys on the OL have the right attitude. To quote Joe Theisman, "... running the ball is an attitude". He was referring to the old "Hogs" of the Skins. In my mind, an OL player needs to have a real "nasty" streak, just like a good hockey defenseman. Do you see a nasty streak in these young Finns OL players ? Thanks.
Rod Penman, Victoria, BC, Canada 8/17/07
A: Yes, Rod. Unlike past years, I am finally seeing a bit of a nasty side in some of these players. Believe it or not, that might be one of Drew Mormino's best qualities. The dude is wired. And Samson Satele doesn't mess around either. You're absolutely right, too. Offensive linemen need to be just as nasty as the guys they are blocking. That's critical.

Dolphins notes from Saturday: Fullback Mauia sports wrist cast

BY DAVID J. NEAL
dneal@MiamiHerald.com
Fullback Reagan Mauia wore a cast on his left hand and wrist in the locker room Saturday morning. Mauia's agent, Max Hannemann said he thought the cast was ''just precautionary,'' but they were waiting for the Dolphins doctor to learn if Mauia suffered a sprain or something worse.

According to Hanneman, Mauia hurt the hand in Monday's practice, but he practiced through the pain Tuesday and played through it Thursday against Kansas City. Mauia ran the ball twice for five yards and caught one pass for one yard Thursday.

I don't understand what all these issues are with Guava. The guy is absolutely fine. He was too harsh in the beginning, but he's toned that down long time ago. He get's emotional sometimes, but who in here hasn't? That little tiff with Mojo got a little personal, but that comes from emotion. If those two would meet, they probably would get along just fine. Many things in here are easily misunderstood and take a few turns sometimes to get cleared up, but guys, we can't get too soft in here either. Remember, we have every age group and temperament across the Warrior loving spectrum. As long as it doesn't get to personal or insulting, a little spice never hurt anyone. I personally like Guava, don't always agree, but he always makes good copy. Keep on blogging. Aloha.

What about the Eagles' running game? Should we be concerned? No, not concerned, but it is something the Eagles absolutely need to improve. The line isn't getting a great push up front, and the Eagles aren't handling defensive players "moving," as Reid said on Friday night. Reid tested his younger linemen late in Friday's game, going for it on fourth-and-short situations twice. Once, Jason Davis was stuffed running behind Pat McCoy and Nick Cole. The second time, Kevin Kolb sneaked for the first down to the right side, where Winston Justice teamed with Cole. The Eagles moved Justice and McCoy back and forth from the right side to the left side. McCoy needs to make more progress and build on his rookie season.

Tony Hunt's role is pretty clear, isn't it? He is in on short-yardage situations and is going to help around the end zone.

I am reading between the lines here and I'm looking at how the offense is using the fullback in the preseason, and my guess is that neither Thomas Tapeh nor Davis has distinguished himself yet. The coaching staff wants more from that position.

I know that Reagan is tough and that he doesn't want to miss any reps. However, he must have been in so much pain AND could have been out for weeks or months if he had taken a hit on his injury.

Thank you for the link. That is horrible news, and it does raise questions. Did Reagan go through a practice and a preseason with a fractured wrist, without ANY wrappping or other protection to cushion the blows that he must have had while blocking and running? What did the doctors know and when was Reagan examined?

Reagan sure showed his toughness, but I'm sad that he could miss the rest of the preseason games. This does give the #3 and #4 FBs on the roster a chance to make the team--good for them, bad for Reagan and probably bad overall for the Dolphins.

If Ikaika can produce, he has a real shot at replacing Edwards and becoming a starter at DE. If not to start the season, maybe by next season.

About what the reporter hopes Detroit can get in the game, this was one fo the things he wrote:
A sack -- at least one measley sack -- by the starters on defense. They didn't get any last week. Ikaika Alama-Francis is starting in place of Kalimba Edwards, who is out with a sprained foot. Rod Marinelli is waiting for Edwards to blossom. Edwards has 23 sacks in five seasons, and only three last year.

brew808,

The last time I quit a job my coworkers were all happy for me and were very supportive, as they knew how unhappy I had been and how bad the work was that I was being asked to do. My management on the other hand REALLY was not understanding and they put an amazing amount of pressure on me to stay...and it worked, I stayed after it was made clear that staying or leaving would make the difference in someone else's career (and life) prospects.

The weird thing is that several of my coworkers were so concerned for my mental well being if I stayed at my job that they tried to convince me I should go. One even called Lori to try to convince her that I should leave, but she explained to him about the other person and his Visa status.

gigi,

There were good and bad things about staying. I got to accomplish a lot of good stuff, but the mental stress level stayed extremely high. The other person never got his Visa, especially bad because his wife is a cancer survivor and they could have used the health plan. Their situation made it impossible for me to leave while I thought he was going to get a Visa.

I can't say any more because I'm not anonymous here. Maybe I'll be able to say something in a week or so...

Mel Purcell doesn't have a tackle yet in the game. Pittman, the DE from Texas who was drafted by Cleveland I think in the same round as Mel *does* have a sack. That is not good for Mel, as I'm guessing that Cleveland isn't planning on giving 2 rookie DEs a lot of playing time during the season and they are in direct competition for the depth chart.

Don't the Browns run a 3-4 as well? I wouldn't be too worried about the stats, although a few tackles and sacks would be nice. You have to think that the game film would be much more important, how he holds his gaps and stuff like that. At least, I hope they are looking at that and not stats, cause that's the only fair way to judge discipline and abilities for a DE in the 3-4.

Lori, who was born in China and moved to Hawaii when she was 8, can relate to how getting a Visa can change a family's lives. She and especially her Mom kept telling me that I should quit because I was miserable, but after the Visa was brought up they stopped that encouragement.

Jason,

I agree that the game film will be more important than anything else. However, I'm watching both of my girls while Lori cooks dinner, so I can't watch the games. I get to look at my computer when they play nicely together, but when they want to include me (to read to them or take a walk outside) I spend 45 minutes or an hour with them until they decide they rather play by themselves.

But without seeing the game film, sacks are huge stats for DEs, which is why I was so happy that Mel got one last week. It is unusual that a team would take 2 DEs almost at the same time in the draft, they clearly wanted to add depth and get probably one of them in the rotation.

More information on Reagan's injury status now. Looks like he'll play with the injury (wearing a cast) once the swelling goes down.

Dolphins fullback Reagan Mauia fractured the navicular bone in the wrist of his left hand and is expected to have surgery on Monday.

The Hawaii product, whom the Dolphins selected in the sixth-round of last April's draft, injured the hand during Thursday night's 11-10 exhibition win over the Chiefs.

While the 6-foot, 275-pound fullback practiced on Saturday with a heavily padded cast, and might continue to play with the injury, coach Cam Cameron said Mauia won't return to the field until the swelling goes down.

Cameron also said Mauia will wear a cast for the next four to six weeks.

"It's a pretty common, pretty minor operation," Cameron said. "He'll be casted and once the swelling goes down he'll play with it."

Mauia is presently behind projected starting fullback Cory Schlesinger on the depth chart. He's carried the ball four times, gaining 9-yards, and caught two passes for 8-yards in the Dolphins two exhibition games.

Final box score for the Tampa game (NFL.com's box score is incomplete so I'm linking to USA Today). Chad Owens ended up with 1 catch for 9 yards, plus kickoff returns for 18 and 25 yards.

The interesting thing is that Chad did the kickoff returns while Matt Jones did the punt returns, even though Tampa wants to have one player handle both jobs. Chad did have a punt return last week (he got 9 yards on his return, Matt Jones got 6 yards if I remember right).

Sopoaga has been hit-or-miss; sometimes he is manhandled by one blocker, sometimes they can't stop him with a double-team. Looks like he could get lower in his stance, he's playing a bit high at times.

It's halftime in San Francisco, here are my impressions:

Sopoaga: He has a tendency to get up in his stance; I know he can bench press a tank, but that doesn't equate to the football field. He's shown flashes that remind me of his time at UH, but the number of times he was driven back worries me. He can do a better job of holding the line of scrimmage, at the very least.

Ulbrich: He still has the speed and the nose for the ball, I think they have to look at getting him back on defense with Smith, Moore, and Willis. If he wasn't making initial contact, he was there a split second later.

Lelie: Looked slow getting off the line at times, but once he got going, he looked fast. Can you imagine the size and speed at receiver if you had Jackson and Lelie at WR along with Vernon Davis at TE?

More info o Reagan. I like the last line.

Dolphins fullback Reagan Mauia is scheduled to have surgery on a fractured bone in his left hand as early as Monday, but coach Cam Cameron doesn't expect Mauia to miss any playing time.

Mauia, a sixth-round pick out of Hawaii, practiced with a cast on his left hand and arm Saturday to protect his left navicular bone, which is between the thumb and wrist, in Thursday's 11-10 exhibition victory at Kansas City.

"Our advice to him was to have the surgery, and he thought that made sense," Cameron said. "It's a pretty common, pretty minor operation. Then once the swelling goes down, he'll play with it."

Cameron said Mauia will wear a cast for four to six weeks after surgery.

Mauia played behind starter Cory Schlesinger and has been a short-yardage back for the first two exhibition games. He has 9 yards on four carries.

"He's shown an ability to get something out of nothing," Cameron said.

Tampa could really use Colt next year to finally settle their QB position. The QB situation under Gruden, mainly due to poor performance by all QBs they have tried (and Simms' horrible injury), has been even more unstable than the normal NFL QB situation.

No sooner had Jon arrived as coach, than Rob “The Human Sack Machine” Johnson did to “compete” with Brad. That was about as fair a competition as a Ukranian political election, and Brad held the job through 2002 (although two touchdown-less starts from Rob and one awful Monday Night one from Smoothie King followed).

2003 was Brad’s year but 2004 saw the Bucs go from Brad to Chris Simms to Brian Griese and back to Simms again for the season finale in Arizona.

2005 was going to Brian Griese’s year but then he got hurt and back came the loser of the Red River Shootout to lead the Bucs to a post-season appearance.

And then came 2006 when we went from Simms to the Polish Pop-Gun Bruce Gradkowski, to Touchdown Timmy Rattay. And now we have Jeff Garcia with Luke McCown waiting to turn his cap round the right way and put down his permanent clipboard to actually throw a pass that matters.

Where will it all end? Hopefully with a quarterback we can stick with. Like we had from 1978 to 1982 when some guy called Williams was behind center. Any chance of that happening now? Not likely.

Koauka: I'm still trying to make sense of it all, I've been thinking about it the past ten minutes.

gigi: Yeah, we mentioned that a couple days ago. I totally forgot about it, but it'll be replayed. I'll get the link in a minute.

whitey: A simple program to identify plants? Well, I'm a guy that uses Microsoft Excel for everything, but it's not a database program. Microsoft Access is pretty good, but it's complicated, and I have little experience with it. whitey -- if you are looking for a database program, you should consider FileMaker Pro -- PC or Mac version. Simple enough to start with and powerful enough to completely run a small business if your need increade. Put pictures or movies into a data fields too.

The basic elements of FileMaker Pro were incorporated into AppleWorks. There is a PC version as well...cost was $39 with both versions included. Your best bet is to find a Mac user with an older model (or schools who got it free) and try out the AppleWorks database. Maybe someone can demo and show you how to set up one. In schools, students in grade 3-5 usually have experience in creating one...ask around.

To clarify: The basic elements of FileMaker Pro were incorporated into AppleWorks 10 years ago. AppleWorks was given free to all schools and in personal iMacs (colored versions--but not the newer white or aluminum ones). Otherwise, cost $39 and both PC and Mac versions included.

Apple just quietly discontinued AppleWorks this week, so I'll let the secret out... AppleWorks, with it's fully integrated Word Processor, Drawing Program, Spreadsheet, Database, and Presentation modules is excellent and "simply powerful". The Drawing (page layout, etc.) module is worth the price alone. It opens and saves MS word and excel files. It is a secret because it makes a PC as functional (application-wise) as a Mac. No macro viruses ;-) So with AppleWorks, why buy a Mac? They probably also didn't want to anger MS into stopping Word for Mac. Times have changed as Macs run Windows on it's Intel processors now...and there are fancier apps.

SO... PC and new Mac users might be able to find clearance copies of AppleWorks if interested...probably at a very low price ($39 was educaton rate).

I post the above as a tip since it is after 2100. I do not want to turn this into a computer discussion forum--there are other places for that ;-)

whitey -- don't be modest. You can do it easy... I taught senior citizens computers in 1990 (Matsuda Technology Center), and they couldn't get online here like you...but they certainly could do AppleWorks if we had it back then. I'll prove I instructed seniors...

In case you didn't get the info, Lion's defensive Coordinator Joe Barry said, "You forget sometimes that the kid is 280 pounds when you just see him - he's very smooth and athletic. Just finished reading Ian's book. In it's entirety, the book gives you a good feel for the life of a Warrior football player from the perspective of last years tremendous run. There is a chicken skin section in the book about the Haka that every serious Hawaii fan must experience. Ian and his fellow Warriors gave their sweat and blood (literally) for the fans of Hawaii. For about the cost of a cold pack of green bottles (regular price) you can support Ian in true Hawaiian Style and at the same time learn what he meant when he says that...... Once a Warrior, Always a Warrior.

For those that been watching practices, how's our run defense looking? I'm guessing that most teams will try to shorten the game and keep our offense off the field by trying to establish the run against us.

Instead of practicing today, Nate and the Eagles will be attending this Carnival fundraiser:

Eagles players, coaches and cheerleaders will be out in full force today at Lincoln Financial Field for the 13th annual Eagles Carnival and Auction benefiting the Eagles Youth Partnership.
Permalink 08/19/07 @ 04:44
Nate probably won't get much playing time in Philly's next game, as that is the game that the starters will get the bulk of the minutes. However, the starters sit out most of the final preseason game and Nate should get a lot of carries then.

The Eagles finish the preseason against the Jets, but their game against the Steelers a week from today will be the final test for the starters. You can trust that Reid will emphasize the running game in practice this week and try to get something going on the ground at Heinz Field next Sunday night.

“We looked sharp overall (against the Panthers), but we definitely need to get the running game going,” left guard Todd Herremans said. “We only had 35 yards in the first half (Friday) and we should have 100. But we know we can run the ball. We just have to figure out a couple things and keep working on it.
Permalink 08/19/07 @ 04:46
Maybe I was wrong about Nate's playing time in the next game. Looks like this columnist (an Eagle employee) thinks that Nate will get enough carries in the next game for them to decide to keep him or not.

I expect to see a lot of Nate Ilaoa on Sunday. The Eagles need to find out if he is worth keeping as a fourth halfback. I have to believe Westbrook will only play limited time. Generally, the starters play a half in Game 3 of the preseason, but since the majority played the first half against Carolina, does Reid cut back in this game?

Ashley Lelie led the receivers with 4 catches for 57 yards, including a 1-yard TD catch. Lelie has primarily worked with the second and third units, but caught his first NFL pass from quarterback Alex Smith.

“I finally got to work with Ashley in the game and he did a nice job, especially a couple of times with me scrambling around and staying alive for me,” said Smith. “He had his opportunity tonight and he took advantage of it, caught some balls and ran some nice routes.”
Permalink 08/19/07 @ 05:05
If the regular season did start Monday, however - and isn't that wishful thinking? - the 49ers would feel good about quarterback Alex Smith, who would in turn feel good about the depth of his offensive line and his receivers, in particular, current backups Ashley Lelie and Bryan Gilmore.

Lelie had four receptions for 57 yards and the touchdown. Gilmore, who had been having a quiet training camp, latched onto three passes for 35 yards in a smooth showing of professionalism.

"It definitely felt good to get out there and get the timing down with Alex," Lelie said. "My stride is probably so big I probably get down the field a little deeper and a little faster than he's used to. My step is just a lot different than a lot of other guys."
Permalink 08/19/07 @ 05:12
Trent Dilfer continues to show why he's invaluable as Smith's backup as he was 7-for-11 for 77 yards and a 1-yard touchdown toss to Lelie, who came alive against the Raiders.

"He's a different kind of guy," Smith said of Lelie. "He's so tall, he gets deeper into his routes than other guys. It was good to get out there with him and start working on our timing."

I didn't see any Lelie news in the SJ Mercury News, which really surprised me. I normally skip the Bay Area papers because I figure that we have lots of people who read them anyway and the relevant stuff will be posted by them...so maybe I'm too rusty about searching through the Mercury News. Weird since I subscribed to it for 7 years.

Comment from: brew808 [Visitor]
Two of Dilfer's incompletions were thrown behind Lelie on 15 yard routes. Lelie got his hands on the ball but couldn't secure it. One thing Ashley HAS to do is be more aggressive going for the ball and making sure the defender doesn't get the INT.

On the Raiders first TD, Ulbrich got run over - the tire track marks are probably still there!

Sapoaga isn't consistent.

Good morning Tsaikos!

Thanks all for the updates. Really helps to keep on top of things. Hope Nate gets more carries, he's bound to break one or two.

Lelie seems to be only part way there, I noticed that when running plays are called or when he has to block on the opposite side, he's just not agressive. In fact, on a couple of plays he just seemed to be going through the motions.

Saw a couple of highlights on Mauia this week, still has the ability to sneak through s seam on short yardage to get that one or two yards. Very important because as you noticed yesterday a lot of teams could not get that 3rd and one first down.

Give Lelie credit, because if Terrel Owens had as many balls under-thrown to him as Lelie has suffered in Denver, Atlanta and yesterday, Owens would buy his own cable channel to complain 24/7.

Once Smith figures out to throw the ball well ahead of Lelie, they could be dangerous.

i had to compile a 'Top 10' plays from the game for a few colleges that are still looking at ryan...and like a lot of coaches who saw the game at Aloha Stadium....they can't believe how quick he is off the snap...he had 2 sacks, 4 solo tackles, 6 assists, 2 tackles for loss of 19 yards, 1 pressure, and caused 1 fumble

not bad for 3 quarters of work.... and it's only going to get better....rest today, back in the weightroom tomorrow!
