'Lost' in Hawai'i

Advertiser writer Caryn Kunz first started watching "Lost" in college as a way to avoid studying. Like other Losties throughout the world, she hopes that the remainder of Season 3 will finally start to answer some burning questions, like what the heck is going on?
Posted on: March 6, 2008 at 11:35:14 pm
You're MINE

Don't read on if you haven't yet watched last night's episode. There. You've been warned!!

It was another night of fabulousness during this week's episode. I thought it very interesting that the entire episode took place on the island--there were flashbacks, but they all took place within the past 3 years. Does this mean that the island vs. rest of the world time discrepancy is shrinking? There were a few moments of ridiculousness, such as when a downpour (and nightfall) conveniently converged as soon as the search party set out, or when Kate recovered completely from being knocked out with a possible concussion in about 30 seconds (the island's healing properties at work again?).

Did anyone else notice that Juliet started straightening her hair once Goodwin was sent away? I think that we really see a more vulnerable side to Juliet this week, and it explains a lot of her hard-to-trust behavior. What I don't understand is why she feels the need to harbor so many secrets. It seems a little excessive, even when her motive to do so is to protect Jack. All in all, I have to say that she's growing on me, and I may yet end up liking her by the time the series is over...haha.

'Whoa' moments:

-Ben lied to Juliet about how long she'd be on the island from the get-go
-THE VOICES ARE BACK! It would seem that Harper is the latest manifestation of the smoke monster...but Jack saw her, too!
-Harper was married to Goodwin!
-Of all people, Kate finds the runaways
-Goodwin stops by to see Juliet, but Ben is there: AWKWARD!
-Locke just loves chopping bloody meat
-Juliet left Jack and Kate in the jungle...THIS is why I can't trust her
-Penny's father is Ben's nemesis--and the owner of the boat
-Ben and Juliet have a two person party: seeing Ben excited and
-Ben sent Goodwin to be killed out of jealousy: "YOU'RE MINE, Juliet!"
-JACK KISSES JULIET! Awwww

Quotables:

Juliet: "It's very stressful being an Other, Jack."
Ben to Locke, re: RED SOX video: "I taped over the game."

Lost in Hawaii locations:

-Locke's camp: YMCA Camp Erdman, Mokule'ia
-Beach Camp: Papa'iloa Beach, North Shore
-Juliet and Goodwin have a secret picnic: Kawela Bay, North Shore
-The Tempest Station: the old army bunker at Kualoa Ranch
-Goodwin's final resting place: Kualoa

Also, EW's Doc Jensen talks about the loves of Juliet.

I keep meaning to bring this up: torch technology. How did they learn to make such uniform torches which always stay lit in downpours? If they've found some flammable, waterproof substance, do there just happen to be caches of it sprinkled around the island for whenever they need torches?

My favorite quote: When Ben says "See you at dinner" to a shocked Hurley and Sawyer. That was hilarious.

I have noticed Juliet's hair in her flashback episodes. When she was in Miami and more mousey, it was more wavy also.

My question is, who is the bad guy here? Is it Widmore or is it Ben? If Ben was really intending to kill everyone on the island, where was his gas mask? If not, then what exactly Daniel and Charolette up to? Widmore is totally evil however, and I hope that Penny is not in league with him...

My favorite quote is "(Ben angry) You're mine!.....(Ben lightens up) Take all the time you want."

one thought for now. who was ben's guy that got caught and beat up by Mr. Widmore? did he give up the island secret?

also, mr. widmore saw the guy who taped the beating. how did he get away?

oh, and who did harper mean by that Juliet looked just like "her". maybe ben had a previous obsession that either died or ran away from him. now Juliet is "his"

YOU'RE MINE!

geez, psycho. thats one way NOT to win over a lady.

Who do you think is Ben's guy on the boat? So many possibilities! And if Locke is always hunting around for food, where did the Others get their food in the first place? And you know when Locke opened up the safe for Ben, there was only the video tape in there. Where did that file of notes come from? Or did I miss it and it was in the safe? I got to check again.

And you know what's a mystery? What is that spammer trying to say?!?!

So Michael is Ben's insider on the ship?

Mary: YES, we must add the torches to the list of little ridiculousnesses...but hey, I can accept them. Mostly. =)

Ben's Guy on the Boat: we still don't know. A lot of people think it's Michael, a theory that may hold up, especially since we can assume that Locke knows him ("You might want to sit down for this").

Good questions/observations, everyone. =)

After the episode, we were promised that next week we'll learn the identity of another of the Oceanic 6...and see a face we 'never thought we'd see again'...Michael?? hmmm.

After last weeks ep, this one was kind of a letdown. Seemed kinda cheesy.....like a "filler" ep or something.

Why didn't Daniel and Charlotte just tell Jack folks what they were up to in the first place? It would have made their mission so much easier. Why so secretive? They told them afterwards anyways.

Like Jin told Jack. (speaking of quotables)
"They're friends, aren't they?"

It wouldn't make this ep possible I guess.

But next week looks like Sun and Jin's ep. This should be a good one.

I'm a huge fan of Elizabeth Mitchell. A pity this episode, which ostensibly focused on her, was really another showcase for Michael Emerson. Who also rocks, to be sure, but...

"The Constant" was a tough act to follow.

A location question: The exterior of the hatch is at Kualoa, but what about the interior, including the railed balcony from which Juliet looks down at Daniel at the computer? I'm going to guess it's the old Foremost location next to OCCC on Dillingham, as I saw "LOST" filming there around the right time. Anyone know?

Sun and Jin next week, meaning those shoots spotted in Kaimuki and Chinatown!

I like how we found out how Ben gassed his former Dharma buddies. Can't wait for next weeks episode.
Oh, and I forgot my other favorite Ben quote when Locke gave him the Rabbit meal..."This one didn't have a number on it, did it?"

wow..sounds like the episode was kinda a let down? or just hard to follow "the constant"? I really really loved that episode, btw....

can't wait for the work day to end and the weekend to begin so i can watch lost!

Geezy: That was definitely a spoiler.

Everyone: Here's a thought - if you've read Doc Jensen's recap http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20182755,00.html
he suggests that Harper is a manifestation of the island (ala Smokey) when she comes to give Juliet Ben's orders. SO - to answer HOP's question above (if Ben was intending to kill everyone, where was his gas mask) - maybe the Harper manifestation was given directions from the island (or Jacob), not Ben at all!

does anyone go to tropical smoothie to watch the show anymore? i have given it a try for two weeks and see no need to go...

okay, that episode was really good- though juliet being a mistress was kinda a surprise...and ben claiming her. HA HA. but, i would like to see a jack-ben throwdown!

Weren't there gas masks in the cabins one time? maybe i'm making up memories :)

trpoical smoothie: If i didn't live on the North Shore, I would most definitely be going but to drive 1 hour to watch 1 hour of television is a little extreme. :) I did it for the premiere, but just don't have that time for every week.

We've seen gas masks a couple of times - in Ben's flashback, when he helps gas all the Dharma people; and when the Others leave the barracks (leaving Jack and Kate and Juliet). But as I recall those were pretty old-looking gas masks, not high tech hazmat stuff like the freighties have.

sorry guys, harold perrineau's credits have been on the show since this season started...this wasn't meant to be a spoiler because i really dont know...however i do believe Michael is da spy...and "a face we never thought we'd see again"...made it pretty obvious

I dunno about michael....what if it's locke? HA HA HA. It has to be someone that would floor locke so badly that he HAS to sit down. I mean, if it was michael, that's explainable :D :D What if locked timetraveled so he's really neither here nor there? HA HA HA. oh well....thought i'd throw that out. BUT, i honestly don't think that john would be "Shocked" to hear michael was the spy. and my fave part? When hurley and sawyer see ben walking to his cabin and he says something like, "See you at dinner!" BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA classic :D

I agree with Opso that this seemed like a filler episode, though I'm sure it will end up being a bridge to things that happen later in the season.

My question is this...Why does Locke continue to let himself be manipulated by Ben? Everytime he makes a deal with him, he gets burned badly.

What I would really want to know is who Ben's man on the boat really is. He's been alluding to that for at least 2 episodes now and it's just getting a bit irritating. I don't think that would really change the course of the storyline, but I just really want to know for the sake of knowing.

Btw, I think Juliet is starting to take over Kate's role as the leading female character in the show. Kudos to her...

not really related to Lost, but I'm watching the movie, Executive Decision with Kurt Russell and Halle Berry, and the airline that was in it was Oceanic. but i think their flight was 343 or something.

I'm guessing the spy is Michael, too, just because it seems so obvious. But with the swerves we get from this show, Charlie or Mikhail are not as far-fetched as they would be for a "normal" show. But they'd have to give us a pretty creative story, as opposed to Michael.
