'Lost' in Hawai'i

Advertiser writer Caryn Kunz first started watching "Lost" in college as a way to avoid studying. Like other Losties throughout the world, she hopes that the remainder of Season 3 will finally start to answer some burning questions, like what the heck is going on?
Posted on: March 13, 2008 at 11:46:46 pm
It's a girl! And you were right...

There were a couple of shockers and a couple of not-so-shockers in tonight's Korean Drama episode. Once again, there was a slightly unexpected twist in the format of the show: we saw both flash-forwards (Sun) AND flashbacks (Jin)--brilliant!!

Also, good job everyone on predicting that Michael is Ben's spy on the freighter--was it just me, or did he look like he'd seen better days? Yikes.

Whoa moments:

-Sun has been pregnant before? No, it's a flash-forward
-There's the giant stuffed panda! (question: why does it HAVE to be a panda?)
-Juliet spills Sun's biggest secret to Jin: DRAMA!!
-The woman on the ship commits suicide and nobody cares...?!!
-Finally meet the captain of the freighter, whom we are not supposed to trust; it makes me wonder--is Ben really the bad guy? Because I'm convinced that Widmore is a BAAAAAD guy...
-Sun performs the fastest birth EVER: It's a girl!
-MICHAEL is the janitor on the boat
-Jin forgives Sun--tender moment!
-Jin's entire storyline was a flahBACK--he's not one of the Oceanic 6!! PLEASE tell me that he's not really dead....he's still on the island with the rest of them...I don't believe it!!

SOOO, we have Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, Sun, and ?? as our Oceanic 6. Who's the last one? Aaron? Locke? The guy in the coffin?

Quotables:

Jin: "I need the panda."
End credits/next week: "Someone WILL die."

Lost in Hawaii locations:

Jin catching a taxi - Chinatown
Toy Store - Toys N Joys, Waialae Ave
Cemetery - looks SO familiar, but I can't place it!! Anyone?

I could have sworn the producers said that last night the last of the Oceanic Six would be revealed. So, I guess they're counting Aaron, though he would not have been on the passenger manifest.

Wow, I thought this episode answered a lot. I don't know if I'm entirely convinced that Widmore is the bad guy.

I think Jin is still alive, and he's on the island still. I'm sure everyone's seen it already, but if you take a look at the pics of the tombstone in the link above it shows his DOD as September 22, 2004, the day flight 815 crashed. So I guess we can scratch his name off of the Oceanic 6.

Great to see Hurley in the future, and not crazy! Dammit, next weeks episode is the last before Lost goes on 4 week hiatus! Hey Chawan, so how did you like this episode?

Hi Caryn!

I love your blog! Had the fortune to visit Hawaii last spring and visit some past (and future!) Lost sites like the recently shown bunker at Kualoa Ranch. I was wondering: was the Korean cemetary at the end really the Waimea Audobon Center? It reminds me of that, although aren't there actual Korean cemetaries on Hawaii where they could have filmed?

That ship is like a Stephen King novel! Everyone is losing their mind and its survivor time.

What purpose did Jin's flashback serve except to make a twist at the end? It really had no plot development in it.

Back to Ben vs Widmore: My comparison is like Ben is like the Grinch, bad but has redemption inside of him, but Widmore is like an Dr Evil megalomaniac who is the true bad guy here.

Big ad for Toys and Joys there - Smash Brothers for the Wii rocks!!!

I think Walt may be causing people to kill themselves, like how he caused all those birds to die.

I felt a bit cheated by how they made it a flash forward/back at the same time, purposefully intercutting the two to make us think it was happening at the same time. I did notice Jin had an older model phone though and should've figured it out from there. What really gets me though, is that my friends and I have been joking that Jin would get killed off after his DUI last year and it looks like the curse strikes again.

lame-o chawan_cut here...

can anyone read korean? I'm assuming the big characters in the middle of the tombstone is his name.

and did you notice there were 3 dates on there? one from 1980 on the left and the 1974 and 2004 dates on the right, which I'm assuming is birth/death.

why 3?

and the michael on the boat "secret" was the worst "secret" ever. it would've been a surprise if it was "giant" walt. which makes me wonder where walt is. for michael to sneak onboard the boat, he had to have gotten back to the "real world" pretty quick and fake his history (thru ben's work) and get him a job on the boat. if i recall correctly, when keamy introduced themselves, he said something about the last port they were in was Fiji. looking on a map, Fiji is not even close to the Sunda trench. So where is the island? and did michael get onboard in Fiji? and why is Michael working for Ben anyways? does Ben somehow have Walt and is blackmailing Michael? he really didn't like Ben previously and did all those anti-Losties things for Walt.

and what's with the brains on the wall? was that another insane crew member that couldn't handle the "side effects" of being on the edge of reality and the island? and is that ben's plan? to have michael sabotage the boat to make sure it can't leave or rescue the Losties? if so, does the boat eventually get fixed, or how does the Oceanic 6 actually get off the island?

and who would've thought the captain would've spilled the whole beans about their mission. but as michael's note (if it indeed was him) said. "DON'T TRUST THE CAPTAIN". but who to believe? Ben or the Captain and Mr. Widmore? And they're saying Ben staged the whole fake Oceanic 815 crash in the Sunda trench. Maybe Ben does have the $3.25262639 million dollars that Miles wants.

Howard, I saw that old phone too, but for some reason, it didn't make me think flashback. i wonder if Toys N joys will now get more business from Lostaholics?

and HOP, yes, smash bros is cool. there's so many extras in that came that'll keep my brother and i playing for a long time to try and unlock.

lame-o out.

hmmm, the whole time I thought that Jin's flashback was happening with Sun's flash forward. I was fooled! And for a second, when Hurley came to look at the baby, I thought the baby was dark....must watch that part again.

I kind of was hoping it wasn't Michael on the boat, but oh well. I'm a bit surprised that Sayid and Desmond played along with the fact that he is now Kevin. And if Ben is not the so called bad guy, how did he get the 325 bodies into a faked plane crash? Is that why Widmore wants Ben, because he hides a miracle island and come up with bodies when he needs to? Widmore wants to make money and Ben wants to keep it the same. Sounds like the North Shore, Ka Iwi coast!

Oh I don't want to see how Jin dies. That's so sad, but why was his death put as the date of the flight? Wouldn't the obstetrician wonder how did Sun get pregnant if Jin was already dead? And I was afraid that the doctor was going to take the baby. Jin's flashback didn't add anything to his story. But still can't figure out who the sixth person is.

wow, lots of stuff i didn't catch. check out all the screencaps in the link above.

and here's a screencap recap link from that link above.
http://getlostpodcast.com/2008/03/14/lost-episode-407-ji-yeon--screencap-recap.aspx

there were tons of hints that the jin flashes were flashbacks. i just didn't catch them.

also mike the janitor showed his face much earlier in the episode.

and nikki made a quick cameo too.

and the tombstone's 3rd date on the left is sun's birthdate. its a family tombstone and i guess they etch-a-sketch her date in later when she dies.

oh, and why did hurley ask if anyone else was coming when he showed up GQ at Sun's door? And when she said "no", he replied "Good!" Does he wanna be the baby-daddy?!?! or is there some sort of rift between the 6?

oh, and check this pic out. its from the above link, but its a promo shot from abc.

shows the distressed crew member jumping off the boat with the chains. you can see land in the background. again its a promo shot, pre-computer editing to make it look like the deep sea, but maybe someone can guess that location too.

first of all...i am SO distressed that Jin is "dead". WHY!?!?!?! I was sooooo in my element of Korean dramas last night, and didn't even bother to "realize" the Jin's was a flashback...I should have known. My first realization came when he said, "Mr. Paik sent me". And then when he said he was only married for 2 months.....I was TOTALLY floored, and realized he wasn't in the future, it was the past...AGGGHHH!!!

BTW, i wanted to jump in and beat down juliette when she spilled the beans to jin. i couldn't believe she did that! BUT, then again, I don't think it would have ever come out any other way, and they wouldn't have been able to work through it like they did in the episode leaving their story hanging because there was no time for reconciliation because jin dies next week. AGH!

DON'T KILL JIN! Let him live on the island! Better living then dead :( :( (though the idea that he lives separated from sun and his baby makes me even sadder...)

wikipedia defines "jiyeon" as heavenly patience....hmmm....lots of application with that name to this show! ha ha.

and if they're fighting over 3 million dollars....it don't really make sense in this day and age (austin powers: 100 thousand dollars ring a bell???). it's gotta be more than the money (but they knew asian psychic man wouldn't go to the island unless $$$ was involved so maybe told him what he wanted to hear?)

okay...i think that's all i want to say.... though i am still getting irritated at Ben's manipulations and am wondering how he was able to communicate with harper when he was in the basement....too many questions. and i really do wish it weren't michael! predictable.

The cemetary looks like Hawaiian Memorial Park in Kaneohe. Not sure though, I was too busy weeping for Jin. They can't keep Jin and Sun apart. They truly represent Lost. We need more Asians on prime time. They said there were 6 survivors of Oceanic. Are they Hurley, Sayid, Kate, Jack, Sun, and Desmond?

Fascinating, fascinating. I've only seen parts of the last two episodes . . . yikes, but, thanks for the recap Caryn.

You think one of the Korean TV networks (SBS, MBC, etc.) might get the rights to film Jin and Sun's entire pre-Lost saga? Maybe local station KBFD can do the whole thing.

Stuffed animals? They're quite seen in K-dramas. I'd say their appearances are 5-10 notches down from "aigoo!!!!" being said and the slapping of heads in K-drama.

What's with the pop-ups during each episode?

I am going to make a guess...

The graveyard at the end was not an actual graveyard. It was propped that way to look it. If you look carefully in the distance there is no other graves in the "park"... as soon as I saw it I thought it was Moanalua gardens, although Waimea falls park will also be a good guess.

Did anyone see all the guava jelly on the baby after it was born?

jojo - When they showed a glimpse of the baby when Hurley visited, I too thought the baby was dark. I was thinking, is that Michaels baby?

Howard - "Lost" lesson, don't get caught drinking and driving, you'll end up dead...on the show.

I think the significance of Jin's flashback was to give a perspective of how he is caught up in his work and the neglect for Sun.

I swear homey, we must be related, because jeje said the same thing about the guava jelly. I thought the baby was Sayid's. (How's that for the Constant Gardener?) Can anyone tell me how long they have been on the island and what the "real" time they've been away?

Liane-Desmond cant be part of the Oceanic 6...he wasn't on the plane...he was already on the island.....and it cant be Aaron because he wasnt even born...my guess is it's whoever is in the coffin from the first ever flashback episode with Jack and Kate.....hmm Jin's death is confusing because the date is the same as the day the plane crash???

The fact that Jin's gravestone has his date of death as the crash date makes me believe he's not dead - just as I don't think the other left-behind Losties are dead. Remember, we know that there's something hinky about the cover story the Oceanic 6 are telling (being made to tell?). I said all along I thought it would be too "nice" an outcome for Jin and Sun to get to leave together, the Lost writers just don't give us that kind of happy ending stuff! But I'm holding out hope that Jin's just back on the island, not dead.

And I'm really, really glad that they didn't kill off Sun in the interest of heart-wrenching drama. I've been worried about that ever since we learned she was pregnant. Now what has me worried are the flashforwards that show bad outcomes for some of the Oceanic 6 (and potentially all of them).

Wow that was an amazing episode its just like the 6th Sense when you look back there were plenty of clues that it was a flashback/flash forward and I even noticed some like the big cell phone and how the doctors seemed to never really do anything to get Jin to the hospital. But I was still caught hook, line and sinker.

Not sure about who the good guy/bad guys are but maybe the pieces are starting to come together. If Michael is working with Ben against Widmore maybe Sayid will join forces since we know he eventually works for Ben.

One other unrelated comment anybody have any idea why Hurley seemed happy that nobody else showed up to see Sun's baby?

Mary, they needed to put the date of the crash on Jin's tombstone to correlate to the "lie" that the Oceanic 6 is passing as the truth. At Kate's trial the story is that 8 survived, but 2 died soon after and Kate was responsible for saving everyone (as Jack testified in court). Jin very well could be still on the island, but the ruse of his death would need to be kept in order for the Oceanic 6 to continue on with their lives back home. They're definitely going back to the island.

I also question whether Aaron counts as one of the 6. Kate's passing him off as her own son (even her mother seems to believe it), but his age, the time spent on the island, and Kate not being or looking pregnant prior to the crash don't seem to add up. Then again, we're dealing with time travel now...anything can happen.

Okay...until they kill of jin, i'm gonna hold off on the "jin is dead" emotions (and even when they do kill him, he'll still be alive :D :D) MAYBE, in order to allow Sun to get out and have her baby, he had to stay behind? So that their "miracle child" could have a chance, Jin had to let with-child Sun go back to the "real" world without him... guava jelly analogies? hmmm.....good thing I only like lilikoi kine! ha ha.

Great episode! Time tricks and heartwarming: it was "Quinten Tarantino meets John Hughes" without all the violence and cussing. Given the following argument, I think Jin is alive. Why Jin might be dead: - The DUI... 'nuff said. - Alternatively, he's reached peace with himself as a person. Some call this redemption. Every character on the island has "demons." Once those demons are banished, the characters tend to get killed. Just ask Mr. Ecko. Why Jin might be alive: - Sun doesn't refer to him as being dead when addressing his tombstone; she just states that she misses him. - Sun, in her delirium of childbirth, continually requests his presence. - Baby's name: "Heavenly Patience" I'm guessing he told her to name the baby this after he realized he'd have to stay on the island. - Jin is a man of his word: "Where Sun goes, I go." I believe him. Call me crazy...but, I think the Captain is Ben's man on the boat--NOT MICHAEL. The captain's demeanor seems detached, like he knows all is going according to plan (a la Ben). And, his openness seems inconsistent with the crew's fear of him. He strikes me a lot like Ethan when he first hit the Losties. Furthermore, I think Michael is working against Ben and decided to return to the island to free those still there (which may or may not include Walt). And everyone keeps saying Ben needed 300+ bodies. If Ben did fake the 2nd crash site, he would only need enough bodies to replace the surviving Losties and Tailies. The other corpses could have been recovered from the real wreckage, with the Losties/Tailies look-a-like bodies coming from the poisoned mass grave. I think Hurley said "good" that no one else was coming because he still felt guilt over having gone with Locke instead of Jack initially and tricking Kate into capture (he later apologized to Jack in the asylum gym). The hiatus is gonna be looooong. Thanks for the blog, Caryn. ...just what I think.
