'Lost' in Hawai'i

Advertiser writer Caryn Kunz first started watching "Lost" in college as a way to avoid studying. Like other Losties throughout the world, she hopes that the remainder of Season 3 will finally start to answer some burning questions, like what the heck is going on?
Posted on: March 21, 2008 at 12:39:32 am
Michael: The island won't let him

This week seemed like a set-up episode that explained a few things and set the stage for some explosive show-downs in the future. There was enough irony in this episode to keep me blogging for a week! To name a few instances: No matter how hard he tries, Michael can't kill himself; Michael is reunited with Walt only to be denied access to him by his own mother; Sayid turns Michael in to the freighter captain for working for Ben--but Sayid himself will be working for Ben in the not-so-distant future; Locke says 'no more secrets' but fails to tell everyone about Miles' demand for 3.2 million; in order to redeem himself for the murders of Ana Lucia and Libby, Michael agrees to murder an entire BOATLOAD of people.

Maybe it was just me, but much as I enjoy Kate, Jack, Hurley, and the rest of the beach camp Losties, it was kinda nice not to see any of them this week. :)

I'll be honest, though--I'm a little bummed that the show so easily and quickly offed Rousseau and Carl. I guess they weren't much use from a plot perspective, but they were innocent people! Poor Alex. Looks like her role will be expanding this season...

Whoa moments:

-Michael's reason for being on the boat: "I'm here to die"
-Rousseau actually agrees with Ben on something! Alex's safety
-Michael is a messy guy--look at that apartment
-Why does he want to commit suicide?
-LIBBY SIGHTING! She's a nurse at the hospital--yet anoter smoke monster manifestation?
-His mother won't let him see Walt--and Walt doesn't want to see him? Why?
-WALT SIGHTING!
-How the heck did Tom get off the island?
-Now we know why Tom told Kate "You're not my type" a couple of seasons back! ;)
-Ben says Widmore planted the fake plane wreck, but Widmore says Ben did. WHO is the bad guy here?
-Libby sighting number 2: what's up with her hair?
-NOT YET
-Ben is cruel to give Walt's name as the caller :(
-Sayid turns Michael in
-Carl is shot dead!! NO! Rousseau, too! SAD!! Ben set them up. HORRIBLE

Quotables:

-Locke to his campers: "No more secrets." HA!
-Michael to pawn broker: "I want a gun with bullets." As opposed to one...without bullets?
-Ben to Michael: "Consider yourself one of the good guys."

Lost in Hawaii locations

Locke's camp: YMCA Camp Erdman
Michael's speeding suicide attempt: a Honolulu pier
Port of Suva: the same Honolulu pier, during the day?
Help me out on the pier situation, I don't usually go near the water in town...

Wow I get to be the first comment. It was great having Libby popping up again I think her story is truly not done and she will appear in more flashbacks.

I think they implied that Michael told Walt about killing Libby and Ana Lucia in order to rescue him and after that Walt views Michael differently. Then again maybe its something else that will be explained in another flashback.

Speaking of which I love the flashback/flash forwards of this season. We are slowly beginning to see how the story unfolds. We see flashbacks that answer exactly why something in the past happened a certain way and we see glimpses into the future and then have to journey to find out how we get to that point. Definitely as you say filled with irony.

The pier was downtown, Pier 23. We watched the filming of the car crash, but Michael was nowhere to be seen!

Caryn: Instead of "How did Tom get off the island," how about - Tom's dead!! Sawyer killed him during Hurley's wonderful beach rescue in the last episode of Season 3. (Sawyer: "That's for taking the kid off the raft." Hurley: "Dude, he surrendered!" Sawyer: "I didn't believe him.")

Tom being apparently alive and well in the future is like Charlie showing up at Hurley's mental health clinic in the flashforward. So the question might be: Are Tom and Charlie in the future manifestations of the island? That's my bet.

How about this for a "Whoa moment" - Michael crashes the car and we realize: It's Michael in the coffin! Then he wakes up in the hospital and we realize: No, it's NOT!

Mary, I believe Tom is in fact dead. Michael's story was a flashforward...but in many senses a flashback for us--as in what has he been doing since he got off the island but long before the showdown last season between the Others and the Losties.

Tom got off the island to track down Michael, but I think he got back before a lot of the later events of last season took place. I'm jus interested in how some of the Others are able to move on and off island so freely.

Dan, I believe you are right. Tom, aka Mr. Friendly, is dead. Don't know the exact timeline, but it happened before the revolt on the beach.

with that being said, how does Tom get back to the island so quick? when he calls Michael in Fiji, he's still partying with his buddy in NYC. i think the sub was already blown up by Locke.

Caryn, good catch on Tom and the reason Kate's seduction attempt didn't work. I was like... no! no! don't kiss him! ok, good, on the cheek. but it was understood that he was da kine.

a little intense for me.
- wow, they showed michael pulling the trigger on tv.
- wow, tom likes the european dudes.
- wow, ANOTHER button to push, and he pushed it. NOT NOW. talk about testing michael.

who the heck is on the island from the boat that shot carl and rooso? and they're using silencers. no gunshots heard. did keamy and his guys leave the boat and we didn't see it? they seemed pretty erratic with their shooting of the discs off the boat. did they suddenly become snipers?

smart move by the producers to have "Giant" Walt stand in a window to hide that he's now 7'0" tall.

never thought Sayid would turn in Kevin/Michael. looks like Ben has some convincing to do. we now know where the bodies came from. but the fake dead pilot didn't look Thai to me. did they not film all of the other dead people in the plane at the bottom of the ocean?

is Kevin/Michael really there to die on the boat? Tom said the island won't let him die. so even if the bomb did work, he probably would just be a little charred. or if he does his job that Ben says, will he be allowed to die?

Does this "island no let you die" rule apply for the rest of the Losties? or does the island "choose" who can/no can die?

is this Temple a new hatch? or have we seen it before? i'm getting all of the hatches mixed up. and we have another map!

ok, thats it for now.

The Port of Suva was Kewalo Basin.

You could see John Dominis and Kewalo Beach Park in the background. There was also the old warehouses with the Chinese(?) signage.

Chawan.....that's just lame! Nah, nah...just kidding! I agree with both you and Dan. The events of Michael's flashback takes place during the events of season 3. Kinda like "Saw 4"...sorry to those of you who never watched "Saw 4"....where the events of the movie takes place the same time as "Saw 3." (By the way, they're making a "Saw 5").

Chawan, giant walt....Haha! Maybe giant walt has four toes on one foot and he end's up being that giant statue. Oh, by the way, check out the screen caps in the easter egg link above. It has a pic of walt, and I think they had to get another boy to play him because like chawan says, he's getting too huge.

Whoa moment for me....finding out who is Tom's type. And Sayid turning Michael in.

4 more weeks till the next "Lost" episode!

chadepp,

good job. the "window" walt looks like a pretty good find by the casting folks to replace "puberty" walt.

Hmmmm, I didn't think that Tom was da kine. I think he's asexual. All the Europeans I've met are just friendly.

Seriously, I was hoping they would show how Michael and Walt get rescued. And I didn't understand when Michael's mom said that they were gone for 2 months and suddenly they appear and they don't talk about those missing 2 months. How do they get there and why didn't Michael tell his rescuers about the other survivors? There's just a big puka from their rescue to New York.

Tom is not dead when he talks to Michael, but the timeline is interesting...consider the fact that on the ship its Christmas Day (The day after Desmond called Penny). When Michael was in the hospital, there was a Christmas tree, so it had to be around that time frame. Michael had left the island about two months prior to that, so Tom would still be alive to talk to him. But not by much. Michael would have to had made a miraculous recovery to get to Fiji and be on that boat for at least a couple of weeks. By the Christmas time, Tom has been shot by Sawyer.

Another interesting real world event is that the Indian Ocean Tsunami hit exactly on that time (12/26/04). I wonder if it will come into play?

also to help, another screencap above. look carefully. ben is talking to michael on the boat, and ben is in the wheelchair due to his tumor. prior to the surgery.

i need to go find out if someone has made a timeline.

Oops, my bad. Date of Crash is 9-22-04 and Michael left on 11-27-04. But who finds him and Walt? Michael's problem is that he still thinks of Walt as the baby when Walt first went away. He didn't get a chance to see Walt grow up. I think that's part of the reason for his depression. Walt can now question Michael.

And I'm not sure what Sayid has to gain from telling the Captain that Michael isn't Kevin. But maybe Ben uses that against Sayid to get him to work for him.

Dan, thank you, that makes a ton of sense! It's tricky to keep the timeline straight on- and off-island.

Comment from: Mary [Visitor]
I wouldn't put it past Ben to have engineered the executions of Rousseau and Carl, either. We may assume it's someone from the freighter, but it could just as easily have been a set-up by Ben in order to isolate Alex and make her more dependent on him. Or something.
Permalink 03/21/08 @ 11:30
Comment from: M.R. [Visitor]
What Sayid has to gain is that Michael is trying to sabotage the boat - their hope to get off the island.
Permalink 03/21/08 @ 11:49

I like Mary's idea that the shooter(s) were sent by Ben. How Ben would have communicated is the mystery.

Someone proposed a month or so ago that the "temple" had something to do with the four-toed statue. Does anyone else think that idea is valid?

Dan's right on the timeline (explaining why Tom is alive).

The pier where the Kahana was docked in Fiji was Kewalo Basin, behind Fisherman's Wharf. You can see John Dominis quite prominently, and even the smokestack of the old incinerator (now the Children's Discovery Center).

http://www.flickr.com/photos/hawaii/archives/date-taken/2007/11/12/

The alley where he meets Tom is by HPU between Chapin Ln. and Beretania St.

I loved watching Michael get into his car on Merchant Street (a few feet away from where Sayid came out of the cafe in Berlin), drive up Bethel Street, and end up at the harbor near where the Superferry docks. Pretty empty streets for New York!

Some answers and more questions in this one...

I don't think that Ben's people were the ones who shot Carl and Rousseau. They would have recognized Carl and not risked Ben's daughter. It looks like Alex realizes this, which is why she felt the need to declare who she was.

Anyone else notice how similar Ben's Temple map looked to the map used by Faraday and Charlotte? Very Tolkeinesque style...did one of Ben's sources leak the map to Faraday and Charlotte?

I'm not buying into the "ghosts" sub-plot. I do think something is attempting to manipulate the characters by using ghost-like images which would impact them most. This episode, we find out that the apparitions or the forces controlling the apparitions are not omniscient, because “Libby” does not know about the bomb's faux countdown. This leads me to believe the apparitions are generated by the person seeing them, but may/or may not be triggered somehow by an outside source.

How DID Tom find Michael in a slum alleyway? Is Michael micro-chipped? Are they all?

The obit for the Season 3 finale coffin mentioned someone burned in a New York City hotel. Was it Tom? Or, maybe a Lostie (Michael? Walt?) went there to look for Tom. Could it have been Arturo?

Speaking of Arturo, a kiss on the cheek remains a macho thing to do among European guys, and alone neither confirms not denies Tom's preference---his penchant for dressing up in theatrical costumes, however, is a dead giveaway.

The Captain didn't look at all surprised to hear Sayid's revelation about the Kevin/Michael subterfuge...he already knows. Either Kevin 'fessed up sometime during the boatride, or (my guess) the captain's in league with Ben.

Does Jin's watch end up on E-Bay or Craigslist, resulting in Mr. Paik finding out and storming the island with a Korean A-Team to extract his daughter? Maybe this is who shoots Carl and Rousseau and eventually rescues the Oceanic 6...nah, too simple a plotline for this show.

Thanks for the blog, Caryn...just what I think.

It was obvious from the first that Tom was gay. Remember when Kate was brought to the Others camp and was allowed to take a shower? Tom was there, and she said something like "not while you're here" and he chuckled and said something that clearly indicated his lack of interest in seeing Kate undress.

... BTW, from the "coming soon," portion, it seems the Oceanic 6 did in fact include Aaron.

so i guess the Oceanic 6 is:

Jack
Sayid
Hurley
Sun
Kate
Aaron

i have a feeling they get off the island first and some of the other survivors will get off in much later episodes but of course will be presumed dead by the rest of the world

Geezy:

If your list is right, who is in the coffin? It's niether Jack nor Kate.

Jack's testimony (if he was telling the truth) that two others died in leaving the island. One might be Jin. Who is the other? Clare--is that how Aaron ends up with Kate?

I'm not sure the remainder leave the idsland. They either die there or choose not to leave. In the future episodes, will members of the Oceanic 6 go back, and why?

There was a DocArtz interview with the writers of "Lost" on the Jay and Jack Lost Podcast, and in it they clarify that the story about the 8 that survived the crash that Jack said on the stand at Kate's trial was a fiction made up by the Oceanic 6....and that the identities of the other two are "not as significant as everyone is making it out to be"....maybe I'll find the audio and just post that part.

Chadepp--heard the same thing you did with the announcer, but was puzzled because Locke seemed to be on screen when the statement started. Wondered whether Locke was supposed to be one of the six, but he hasn't been "revealed"--and assumed Aaron and Kate might be considered "as one" if the fiction created is that Kate was pregnant with Aaron at the time of the crash. Why this made sense for me is that if Locke's in the coffin, Kate's comment on why she wouldn't go to the funeral home would make perfect sense.

I still think the odd's are good it's Locke in the coffin. Remember, it's someone Jack considers neither friend nor family.
