A Good (Friday) history lesson

Today is Good Friday, which is a state holiday, but not a federal holiday. (And unfortunately, it is not an Advertiser holiday, either.)

Hawaii is one of a handful of states that recognize Good Friday as a state holiday.

I was interested in the history behind this, so I looked it up.

In the late 1980s, a group of local residents sued Gov. John Waihee, Mayor Frank Fasi, other government officials and public employee organizations. They alleged that the Hawaii statute that sets aside Good Friday as a state holiday violates the establishment clause of the first amendment, which prevents government from affiliating itself with any religious doctrine or organization.

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the observance of Good Friday as a state holiday on April 30, 1991, saying that the purpose of establishing Good Friday as a holiday in Hawaii wasn't religious, but simply "to provide Hawaiians with another holiday." Essentially, our government just wanted to give workers a day off.

At that time, 11 other states recognized Good Friday as a legal holiday. As the AP/NYT reported in 1991, the Ninth Circuit became the first Federal appellate court ever to rule on the issue.

Hope you're enjoying your day, if you have the day off. Have a nice weekend!

Good information...State employees get 13 holidays a year...plenty yeah? Wages are not the level of outside businesses but then you have the benefits like holidays, fairly generous vacations and medical. April is the only month without an holiday so my suggestion is get rid of Good Friday since you already got Prince Kuhio Day on March 26 and have a holiday on April 22, Earth Day.

Let me guess: you're not represented by a union (or at least a good one) at the Hon Ad?

If no more, do they tell you (verus what they really mean) :

1. "Unions 'r bad" They're corrupt, and top heavy. (wait- no look- that's our corp leadership!)

2. "You can save more money if you don't pay dues" (We'll just take it, and some benefits, from you)

3. We'll take care of you (yeah, I gotta volcano to sell you, too!)

Anyway, it's been my experience that them that go cheap and aren't benefited by union representation get the package they deserve ('cept for those CEO types that steal from stockholder and employee alike).

Also, I haven't found a holiday I didn't like with the possible exception of Kamehameha Day.

For Kamehameha, we should have the entire WEEK off along with carnivals, fiestas and so on..

Have a nice weekend!

The holiday still shows favoritism toward a day of the week. To even the playing field we should have a Good Week, and take the week off. Maybe this is what's behind Golden Week?

As a Catholic, I'm super glad a big employer such as the state of Hawaii gives their workers Good Friday off. See? With the Christmas holiday, too, pretty much proves how the country was founded on Judeo-Christian values. And it's alive and well as far as Hawaii state government goes.

And HAPPY EASTER -- which even more of us get to enjoy!!!

I have Kuhio day off, too. Oy Vey, I may never return to work after that one (yuk yuks!)

I mean, can't have it both ways -- take the holiday; nonbelievers might not have to go to Church on Good Friday, but, knowing why the day's a day off can't be denied.

I mean . . . it ain't because software was invented on this day. There's a very specific reason for this day.

O.K., I'm done, heh. Enjoy!

I'm personally a little bit embarrassed that Good Friday is a State holiday in Hawaii. It seems rinky-dink to me, as though we are a benighted, Bible-belt type of place rather than big league and cosmopolitan.

Except for the 1797 Treaty of Tripoli, passed by Congress and signed by the President which states never more clearly in Article 11 that "As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion..."
