Rap's Hawaii 2008
Rap Reiplinger was regarded as a comic genius whose work shaped what we think of as "local humor." For the first time since his untimely passing, Rap Reiplinger's work will be performed on stage again. Honolulu Theatre for Youth is taking "Rap's Hawaii" on tour to state high schools. The actors and artistic team blog about the tour and the reaction they get from audiences around Hawai'i.
Reach Rap's Troupe through lcataluna@honoluluadvertiser.com.

James Kilpatrick Mulhaney Montegue DelRio Okada

Junior the third.

Remember him in "Taste Test?" with the beer can hat and shopping bag? Word is that Rap Reiplinger named many of his characters after classmates at Punahou... Class of '68, by the way. Same time as Nainoa Thompson but before Barack Obama in case you were wondering.

Anybody have any evidence to back that up? Know a Fate Yanagi? Nephi Jensen Mataho? Aunty Agnes Kealoha and her gourds?

A bunch of Rap's '68 Punahou classmates are coming to the public shows on the 14th and 15th - ask em!

Close to my heart, Fate Yanagi, who was purported to be the Head Cheerleader of "Furtado Memorial High." (There really is a "Furtado Memorial Gym.")

Just before you walk inside Radford HS Gym, look at the sign on the left side of the main doors.

The Gym was named in honor of "Bill Furtado" former Speaker of the House of Representatives, State of Hawaii. He was also a very prominent HPD investigator from back in the day.

I don't think that had anything to do with Rap's choice of that particular Portuguese name. He was just poking fun at yet another ethnic group by using a name that would resonate with local people, and keep the humor "real."

Radford's gym is now named after longtime basketball coach and athletic director Jim Alegre, who passed away in October 2005.

Regarding other names, I wonder if there really were Punahou classmates named Preintiss (As in, "Eh Preintiss, you get change?") and Suganuma ("Life is Suganuma").

Those are two of my favorites.
