Scene It
Kawehi Haug is the Honolulu Advertiser's new entertainment reporter. As an equal opportunity current events junkie, she lives (and reports ... and blogs) by two rules:
1. No pop culture snobbery allowed. Because let's face it, you can't completely understand life in 2008, from politics to indie rock to reality television, if you don't keep up with popular culture.
2. Wherever you are is where it's at. Enough with the Honolulu-New York City comparisons. Leave your heart in Honolulu. It's a good place to be.
With the rules in mind, Kawehi writes about this city's vibrant (yes, vibrant — she can prove it) arts-and-entertainment scene, pop culture references included.

The Soundtrack of Love

A list of the 20 most romantic songs ever written was released today (see story). Most of the songs definitely deserve to make the list. Others, like — brace yourself! — “Wind Beneath My Wings” shouldn’t even be allowed to get within 20 feet of that list. But that’s just my non-music expert opinion.

Here’s the list (in alphabetical order):

THE 20 MOST ROMANTIC SONGS EVER WRITTEN

(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman
All The Way
Always On My Mind
At Last
Fly Me To The Moon
How Do You Keep The Music Playing
I Say A Little Prayer
I Will Always Love You
I’ve Got A Crush On You
I’ve Got You Under My Skin
In The Wee Small Hours
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
The Very Thought Of You
The Way We Were
Till There Was You
Time After Time
Unforgettable
We've Only Just Begun
What A Wonderful World
Wind Beneath My Wings

If I had to make a list of the most romantic songs ever written, these 10 would start the list:

1. Signed, Sealed, Delivered (Stevie Wonder)
2. Save the Last Dance For Me (standard)
3. Let's Stay Together (Al Green)
4. I don't Love You Much (Guy Clark)
5. What'll I do? (Judy Garland)
6. Teach Me Tonight (Dinah Washington)
7. The Way You Look Tonight (standard)
8. I'm Yours (Jason Mraz)
9. Ain't That Love (Ray Charles)
10. My Baby Just Cares for Me (Nina Simone)

Add your picks to the list and we might just turn out the best love soundtrack EVER.

I dare say, dear readers, we have quite a list brewing here. Perhaps a Honolulu Advertiser readers' mixtape is in order.

LizKauai: "Sunshine of My Life"? Fantastic song. And what woman doesn't like a little Billy Joel, right? He's got all the right words all the time. Great choices.

Moke: Thanks for the Hawaiian additions...really great picks. We could easily make a compilation composed of just beautiful romantic Hawaiian songs.

Chicken Grease: What can I say? You nailed it on every one."Free Bird"! That's 9 minutes of pure swoon-inducing music. And, thanks to you, I'll have various parts of "Sometimes When We Touch" reeling through my head all evening. Right now I'm at, "I wanna hold you 'til the fear in me subsides." Well done.

Papa Bear: I think Heat Wave gets everyone's motor running! Boogie nights indeed. And good call on "Don't Give Up On Us" — a good, solid ballad like they used to do in the '70s.

Aloha,

Many Hawaiian artists have a knack for redoing Love Song's and I miss the work of Pu'uwai.

The above mentioned songs would serve many entertainers well should they decide to conjure up a Medley.

Aloha,

I love music of the world, at the same time, my heart is in Hawaii because of so many things yet the song below written by Dr. Danny Couch has to be one of the best and in my mind next to "My Hawai'i" written by my friend, Eddie Brigati, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee whom wrote it while traveling to Hawaii with his Mom.

Have You Seen These Islands?

Have you seen these Island’s?
Have you seen the Beauty of this land?
Do you know its people?
Brother, sister’s walking hand in hand
Have you seen the Ocean?
Miles and Miles of Crystal Deep Blue Seas,
Can you smell the flowers?
Fill the air with Fragrances for Free

This is Aloha……..
This is Aloha….
This is Aloha….
This Land of Hawaii…

Have you felt the Power?
Mountain Craters Throwing Lava In the Air,
For its Green swept beauty,
From each island blossoms everywhere,
Have you felt its spirit?
Ancient Gods, their Mana still is here,
You will love these Islands
Nothing in the world can compare

This is aloha,
This is aloha,
This is aloha,
This land of Hawaii………………..

Instrumental

Have you felt the power?
Mountain Craters throwing Lava in the Air
For its Green swept Beauty
From each Island Blossoms everywhere
Have you felt its spirit?
Ancient Gods their Mana still is here
Colored rainbows stretch across the sky
Waterfalls so high
Mountains make you cry……….

You will love these Islands
Nothing in the world can compare
If you touch the spirit
Then the gift of love will lead you here

This is aloha
This is Aloha
This is Aloha
This Land of Hawaii

Have you seen these Islands?
