SNL: THE BEST OF THE BEST, ACCORDING TO YOU
The Chicago Tribune's RedEye edition of the newspaper is asking readers to vote for their favorite Saturday Night Live cast members. The search began last month and the list has been narrowed down to the top 16 cast members by readers' votes. The deadline to vote for your favorite eight of the 16 is Friday, Feb. 29. The remaining eight will then be up for another vote until one SNL cast member reigns supreme.
Here's the top 16 (my picks are in bold):
STEVE MARTIN REGION
Bill Murray vs. Billy Crystal
Phil Hartman vs. Dan Aykroyd
ALEC BALDWIN REGION
Will Ferrell vs. Jane Curtin
Eddie Murphy vs. Amy Poehler
JOHN GOODMAN REGION
Chris Farley vs. Dana Carvey
Gilda Radner vs. Adam Sandler
TOM HANKS REGION
Mike Myers vs. Chevy Chase
John Belushi vs. Jon Lovitz
If you missed the first new episode of SNL since the writers' strike started more than three months ago, here's a video of the funny and sharp Hillary vs. Obama debate sketch that adequately nails both candidates. The episode was the shows highest rated in years.
HBO HITS THE SMALL, SMALL SCREEN
HBO's joined the Internet masses with its own YouTube channel that broadcasts videos of its network shows. In some cases the videos are full episodes ("In Treatment" is available in its entirety) and in other cases (most cases, actually) the videos provide three- or four-minute highlight montages of the shows. Catch up on "Entourage," "Flight of the Conchords," "Sex in the City" or "The Wire."
SAILOR JERRY HITS THE BIG SCREEN
A soon-to-be-released documentary on legendary tattoo artist Sailor Jerry will make the film fest rounds this year starting with its world premiere at the South By Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas in March.
The film, titled "Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry," tells the life story of Sailor Jerry whose tattoo shop was located on Hotel Street and who specialized in inking WWII sailors who were passing through Honolulu to and from their posts.
TETRIS ON THE ROCKS
Here's one for the geeks: Gizmodo.com introduced a concept for Tetris block-shaped ice-cube trays. They're cute, but they're still just an idea, so don't go looking for them on eBay.
