Volcanic Ash

Iraq tragedy grows

It's sobering that we passed 4,000 American deaths in Iraq the same week we marked the fifth anniversary of our horribly ill-advised invasion of a country that represented no danger to us.

Who can forget a deluded President Bush strutting around the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln to declare "mission accomplished" just a couple of months after he started the bombing, when only a few dozen U.S. forces had lost their lives?

Bush promised back then that the war would cost no more than $100 billion, but the cost today is $600 billion and climbing at a rate of more than $12 billion a month. Some estimate our national treasury could be $3 trillion lighter by time it's all over, leaving other pressing public needs begging.

There's no evidence that Iraq was part of the terrorism network responsible for the 9/11 attacks, or possessed weapons that posed any threat whatsoever to our citizens. A credible case can be made that we're less secure rather than more as a result of this misadventure.

Still, Bush and Vice President Cheney blithely insist it's all been "well worth the effort," even though two-thirds of Americans view this war as a failure. Our toothless watchdogs in Congress have failed to demand a meaningful accounting of the blunders, miscalculations and outright deceptions.

How much longer are we going to sit by and allow our tragic mistakes to compound?

Check out the oil contracts- it was all about big oil...

The grand oil party of cheney and shrub has done its irreparable damage to our nation and the world.

By the way, Dave, what about the millions of refugees and the at least hundreds of thousand Iraqis killed (more maimed or otherwise injured). What about the tens of thousands of U.S. injuries, including mental disorders?

How CAN we put a number on an infinite amount of damage?

Nothing is what's going to happen next Jan. 20 - both Clinton and Obama have voted to fund the war and will continue it, not end it as president.

Cynthia McKinney, the Green Party candidate, would end the war as she, almost uniquly among Democrats, tried to do as a Congresswoman.

Well, I didn't vote for him...twice! As I didn't vote for Lingle...twice!

Funny how they take credit for the economy when it's doing well, but become silent and place "blame" when it's down.

Any wonder why so many, especially the young, no longer vote?

The CIA assured Truman that the Chinese would not cross into Korea. The CIA misadvised the President about Iraq. Do you blame all of the CIA's misinformation on Bush? Bush did not act alone in going into Iraq. It was a mistake but once that mistake was made, the choices became "bad" and "worse."
I think you advocate "worse."

Dave,

Why do you still lament about the mistakes of the past? We can't change what happened.

Bush was correct: it *was* Mission Accomplished. The war *was* over with minor casualties. It's the PEACE that we've been screwing up until Petraeus got on board.

But the real question is, what do we do now? ALL 3 Presidential candidates agree that a precipitous withdrawal would be against our interest and even committed liberal Obama would fight AQ (which is now clearly in Iraq).

I'm certain that you don't advocate a full withdrawal, do you? If you want to look at our past mistakes, does the anti-war left accept responsibility for the 2 million that died in Cambodia after we pulled out of Vietnam?

Lets stop talking about coulda, shoulda, woulda and bring a thoughtful, rational, responsible dialog to what we need to do TODAY.
