Taxes trump the new brew

I mentioned last week possibly taking a day off to renew my acquaintance with the newly marketed Primo Beer now hitting the stores.

But I realized I'm behind on my income taxes and had better use the day to become reacquainted with TurboTax.

After figuring the federal and state share of my semi-retirement earnings, I'm hoping I'll have enough cash left to replace my creaky laptop; then I'll have to turn my attention to Windows vs. Mac.

I used a Mac for many years, but switched to Windows in a fit of pique three years ago when my iBook and iPod broke at the same time and I found in trying to get them fixed that Apple had become as arrogant as Microsoft.

I don't care for Windows Vista and am tempted to switch back, but I never did succeed in fully merging data, e-mail and music files between the two platforms in the Windows years, and I'm worried I'll only compound the problem by changing again.

I don't want to have to keep up with two operating systems, so I don't find much advantage in the new Intel Macs that can also run Windows.

Oh well, if Uncle Sam and Auntie Linda dig deep into my pocket, I'll have another year to think about it.

'Fraid it's windows BEASTA, Dave. (not Spanish, just a beast of a operating system)

Unless you have computer illiterates, kids or unknown users on your equip, recommend you get rid of Beasta or at least turn off the UAC crap.

Good morning, Dave,

Get your TurboTax done today for your 2007 tax return so Uncle Sam can send you your $1200 rebate in May 2008. The rebate will help you purchase your new laptop.

Good luck.

Maybe Hawai'i shouldn't tax retirees at all?
We should do the math for a VAT (or consumption tax)like Europe. It would more evenly allocate a fair share of the burden to our transient visitors.

Car dealers already pack the charges for us in Hawai'i...and we pay it. That windfall should be going to the gov't not the Car Dealer oligopoly.

My Windows Vista has become sluggish and I get the "not responding" message a lot. It just freezes a lot and I just twiddle my thumbs waiting for it to thaw. My iPod got full up and I couldn't figure out how to delete the songs I don't want to add the $30 worth of songs I bought. I will try again, but the first time I did it, iPod's website just doubled the songs I marked off, so I then had halved the amount of songs available. How not user friendly! So Windows and Mac have both messed me up lately.

If it helps any, my computer guru told me to stay with XP - less buggy than VISTA even though Microsoft came out with SP1.

(Not that SP was that great but better than VISTA in his opinion).
