Jones leads way as fund-raiser

About a dozen former UH quarterbacks are expected to attend a news conference Tuesday to announce a June Jones Foundation fund-raiser.
That brings up the question: Is Jones the biggest fund-raiser in the athletic program?
His work with the Eö Nä Toa, Eö Nä Toa Ë line is bringing in a new revenue stream to the football program. Because his foundation owns the rights to the Eö Nä Toa, Eö Nä Toa Ë merchandise and music, the football program receives a larger cut.

* * *

The training table for the football team is one of the best breakfast buffets in town.
But the cost of the meal is deducted from a player's scholarship check. This spring practice, the players opted to take the money instead of the training-table meal. For half the cost of a training-table meal, the players can eat breakfast at Aja, a restaurant on the second floor of the athletic complex. The players can use the savings to pay for their other meals. It's not much, except if you're a college student struggling to find extra money to pay for laundry.
Training tables are available only during the football season and spring practice.

Aloha kakou,

I'm sorry to bring this up again and risk having an argument over 'okina and kahako but...

Does the official logo say "Eo Na Toa"?

Because that means, "The warriors lose"

It should say, "Eo e na toa e"

I promise I know what I'm talking about.

JJ is doing a great job for the UH fb program.

If my memory serves me right, the first couple of years when he came on board he stepped on peoples toes, trying to do things that were not part of the job description. But its all good now

Looks like JJ would make a Great AD but I'd rather have him at the helm of the football program.

When June Jones' contract is up, he should have his agent put in some sort of language in the new contract that June gets to do the schedule. Or at the very least, have more input. He shouldn't have to put everything in the hands of Herman, hoping for the best. Because as we're finding, it's a lot of hoping! June has great scheduling ideas, allegedly, and he's said in the past that he would do the schedule if he was asked to do so. I think it would be great. Just my two cents.

BTW, I recently bought an Eo Na Toa E T-shirt, and it's very nice!

I don't see JJ going anywhere soon. I think he really enjoys what he is doing, barring interference from the higher ups. His foundation is doing well and I can't forsee him abandoning all his work there in the near future, as well. So this is good news for all of us.

Let's hope the Athletic Departmetn knows well enough to keep him happy.

Hawai`i's a good place to implement new ideas. We are a forgiving group if we know what the intentions and planned directions are. As long as there is communication both ways.

I love what JJ has done with the offense and I'm excited as heck to see what McMackin does with the pool of talented defenders he has for next season.

I suspect we will have a number of former all-state, all-region players sitting on the bench next season just because the depth of talent has gotten that good.

I think the athletic department has been hamstrung by the H logo deal, mostly because the majority of the moolah goes to auxilary services. i would think that renegotiating that split would be a pressing matter.
It seems Jones decided to do an end run. He created his own brand, with all of the moolah going to Na Koa, which then helps the football program. Very crafty.

The H logo is supposed to be the athletic department's (although most of the proceeds go to auxilary services). But I think Jones has the right idea in changing the logo every few years. First, it keeps up with the trends. Second, it earns new moolah.
That's where the AD — and any AD, for that matter — is hamstrung. He's got to make nice-nice to upper campus. The football coach only has to focus on his own program.

I suspect that the only way the AD can get the upperhand is to fill the seats and really make the department financially independent or better still, profitable.

Much of it is a popularity vote, too. If the general public is really behind you, that gotta add a lot of clout.

Hmm ... but then upper campus might resent you for your popularity and prefer status quo by having someone easier to control.

If so, here's our daily Texas update:
I was little bit concerned about Jake Patek because I thought he was a Glanville-system guy. I was wrong. Patek is taking a leadership role on defense. He cut his hair, shaved and bulked up. He's helping a lot of the younger guys with the assignments. He's also going to thrive in the new left-right system, which will allow him to play as a hybrid free-strong safety. It'a amazing. He's only been here since July, but he really fits in.

ST, I haven't had the time to work on that diacritics tutorial, but try replacing "Eö Nä Toa, Eö Nä Toa Ë" with Eō Nā Toa, Eō Nā Toa Ē (just copy and paste), that should work for you.

Puhi, take this for what it's worth, but if you check the Pukui (Pōkuʻi)/Elbert Hawaiian Dictionary, under the entry for , an example is given:

Eō e Liliʻu i kou inoa, Liliʻu, answer to your name song.
That's what evidence I can find, but I don't know Hawaiian grammar.

Ugh, don't get me started on Auxiliary Services. Don't they steal enough of my money?

Let's hold a statewide lottery to guess which "Monday afternoon" the schedule will finally be unveiled. Sounds like a winner because the choices are infinite.

ST:

Regarding training table meals -

1. Is deducting the cost of the meal from the scholarship check an NCAA requirement?

2. If not, do you know of any other school that does this?

3. What happens to the left overs - do staff members get a free meal?

If the players are charged for a meal, then everyone else who eats from the training table should pay also.

Thanks for your insight.

Haha, well, some of you newer guys might not know what happened to me for the Oregon State game. I live in Salt Lake, two miles away from Aloha Stadium, so I usually catch the bus to go to the games. I decided I'd go a little early, so I waited for the bus at my usual time. This was around 4 PM... by the time 6 PM came, we (me and this other guy headed to the game) found out from TheBus that the nearest bus was at Radford headed Kalihi-bound (still far away and heading in the opposite direction); in other words, we were never going to make it on time, waiting for the bus. So we decided to see if there were any taxis down by Safeway. There were none, and we weren't sure how bad the traffic was, so we decided to walk it. Well, we walked 1.7 miles to Radford High School. (I used a car odometer to check the distance later on.) There, we found this wayward bus driver who, for some reason, was parked at the school (and the bus does not stop on school property). So the driver (a rookie who never drove that route before) took us to Aloha Stadium, stopping to let us off in the middle of traffic; I managed to get in just at kickoff. Had a mini panic attack during that game because of all the stress, haha. And that's my little adventure...

madeinhawaii,

i believe he said that '07 it is up. any contract may be reviewed and replaced with a new one as long as both parties are in agreement.

methinks, that jj will exceed the million and that he will fight to get his asst's a sizable increase.

the sad part is, had we a "marquee" schedule this year, we would have seen a huge increase in attendance and overall revenues. that would have been a great selling point for the coach.

however......

so you can see the impact the schedule has on the economics of warrior football. salaries, facility improvements, recruiting budget, etc. i hope that an increase in the football budget is considered regardless of the weak schedule this year. we need to keep thinking outside the box and break the rice bowls. we are on the precipice of becoming a major player, but, we need to spend the money to make the money and grow the program at the same time.

hey al,

sorry if i missed your comments regarding that, but nice to hear you're advocating it! yeah, i just think JJ should get more control over the football-related decisions in his next contract. june just knows how to get things done. and he cares a lot about what happens to this program. not saying that frazier doesn't, but you know, maybe frazier got too much on his plate. he has to juggle so many things. sometimes, when you juggle too many things, all the pins end up falling to the ground. maybe someone like coach jones, someone who has a lot of connections and pull in the football world, would be better suited for scheduling and other football matters. that's just how it seems.

Maverick, not sure about the concussion, but I know the coach took that QB out of the game. I remember watching that game over the internet and listening to it on the radio at the same time. I've believe it was BC, on the radio, who stated that the ambulance was for someone in the stands. I don't really want Jacob to send someone to the hospital, but I love the "Paaa-Taaack" sound. You sure you aren't from Texas?

I didn't ban food talk.
I just reminded folks about the importance of trying not to stray too far off topic too often. That stems from two observations:
1. Topics initiated here often are debated in other forums. I think it's easier to discuss our topics here.
2. The readers are basically in charge of the "comments" section, so they can discuss the topics they wish. I just want to make sure that we're not excluding too many people.
However, I did discourage — OK, ban — talk about home security particularly when it appears to be an end-around my no-flaunt rule.
So here's my new, new, new rule: Free talk between 9 p.m. and the next day's post, as long as we abide by the no-name-calling, no-asking-anyone-to-be-fired rules.
And one last rant:
If somebody is having problems with another member of the board — yes, we're looking at you, Mr. brew — please don't complain to the higher-ups. My life is difficult enough without the bosses asking me to intervene with on-line spats.
On that note, hope all of you are having a happy Easter.

Why don't they have 1/2 a season passes? First half of the season and second half?

NO special premium seating, just the standard seats.

Maybe the first half would be cheaper than the second half. Sort of a teaser. Just to fill the seats and get more people to "test drive" Warrior football. But the combined total still 10% more than a full season ticket.

Then sell these up until the start of the respective half.

The 1/2 season pass sounds like a good idea. You are correct in that it would allow people to try out the feel of the live game.

They might even build fan loyalty for season tickets for the following years.

Would the UH be willing to look at something like this? It would require additional work and book keeping. But it might fill the seats especially if the prices were lower for the first half than the second half of the season.

Any word of progress for schedules for succeeding years? I sure hope the team does not have to put up with this shenanigans ever again.

By the way, blew out the eggs and got them colored in time for the Easter Bunny. Thanks for your help!

I like the idea about a half-season pass. It's better than the next-best solution I can think of, which is non-conference and conference passes (and I hate that idea, despite coming up with it).

Here's something that scared me, when I went to check out season ticket prices:

http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/Ticket/fb.pdf

At first, I thought, "Where are the Mānoa Maniacs?" But then I noticed that PP and QQ in the orange are still not listed; that should mean that those sections are still saved for the students.

Here's a funny tidbit about the Mānoa Maniacs seating at Aloha Stadium: A lot of the opposing team's family members have seats in the yellow above us, so they end up in our section because they don't know the color system. We're always having to explain to them that their seats are all the way up there. :-p

I guess they have not changed the seating for the visitors. Oh well. What must be perplexing is the vast sea of empty seats and they are stuck way up in the top most sections trying not to pass out from the thin air.

Albeit the stadium section is not as steep as those in other stadiums. The upper seats at the Kansas City Royals are like climbing down a ladder. Kind of scary considering there is only a railing a foot high on the short wall at the bottom. It is much worse than the red section at Aloha Stadium.

At least if we play only 12 games, we have to win 6 total games, counting only 1 1-AA game. If we win at least one 1-AA game, that means we have to win 5 of 10 games against 1-A teams. It could be a blessing in diguise since we don't have to win 6 of 11 1-A games with one more road game.

That's why I think they made a mistake make all big talk about the season ticket sales, with all of those weekly updates. After 10 days, they were looking at it as they were ahead of last year's first 10 days of new sales. The other way to look at it is after 10 days, UH sold a combined (new/renewal) 3,200 season tickets. And as a coach pointed out, there's no boom announcement coming up. Colt Brennan's announcement, that's a boom that should have triggered sales. Even gettng Washington would have triggered sales. There's no big news on the horizon that would spur sales.

Because there's no such thing as a free meal when it comes to scholarships. Each scholarship player gets a check, which supposedly covers off-campus rent and meals. If they dorm, they don't get the rent check. If a meal is covered, they don't get the money for that meal.

From the 2006-07 NCAA Division I Bylaws (page 417 of 476):

http://www.ncaa.org/library/membership/division_i_manual/2006-07/2006-07_d1_manual.pdf

30.9.2.1 Exception — 12 Game Season. An institution with a record of six wins and six losses may be selected for participation in a bowl game under the following circumstances:

(a) The institution or its conference has a primary contractual affiliation, which existed prior to the first contest of the applicable season, with the sponsoring bowl organization. In the case of a conference contractual affiliation, all conference teams with winning records must be placed in one of the contracted bowl games before any institution with a record of six wins and six losses may be placed in a contracted bowl game. There shall be no contingency agreements with other sponsoring bowl organizations intended to enable an institution with a record of six wins and six losses to become eligible for those contests; or
(b) All contractual affiliations per Bylaw 30.9.2.1-(a) have been fulfilled and all institutions with winning records have received bowl invitations (either through a contractual affiliation or as an atlarge selection).
Now here's my question: We know that UH has a standing agreement with the Sheraton Hawaiʻi Bowl, that UH will go to the Hawaiʻi Bowl as long as it is bowl-eligible but not BCS-eligible. But is that agreement 1) officially contracted, and 2) is it UH first, WAC second (in terms of priority)?

actually, it becomes an 11 game schedule unless we lose one or both d1aa games. then it becomes a 12 game schedule. although it won't happen, losing to a d1aa team. although charleston southern would probably cream unc.

so, if we win both d1aa games we would have to do no less than 8-4 with a 12 game schedule.

Al-You're right. A 12-game schedule with two 1-AA opponents is really an 11-game schedule. I think you're almost correct, Papa Al. According to my understanding, Bylaw 30.9.2 states, "A 'deserving winning team' shall be defined as one that has won a minimum of six games against Division I-A opponents and that has more wins than losses." UH can still count the Charleston Southern game according to Bylaw 30.9.2.2 (I assume CSU has fulfilled the grant aid requirement). So, UH can go 7-5 (more wins than losses) with five I-A wins, the win against CSU (the sixth I-A win by exception), and the win against UNC (which is moot).

Jason is correct.
The worst-case scenario is UH beats UNC in a game that won't count and loses to Charleston Southern.

Good morning Tsaikos-

ST- Hope we get another "for those keeping track" listings today, this time for offense. I'd really like to hear how those RB's are doing. I highlight the names in your prospectus article from last week.

I posted an article yesterday about the Nevada 8pm start time on 16 Nov. Makes sense to me now. 6pm in Hawaii, 9pm Mountain time. Everyone in the WAC can watch in 'prime time' (except La Tech). Unfortunately, if there are any poll/Heisman voters on the East coast the game starts at 11 pm. Maybe the Heisman campaign slogan should be "You gotta TIVO this guy!"

Al, the brisket recipe called for salt, garlic salt, and celery salt. I looked at the adobo ingredients and said "what the heck."

Gotta go to work!

That was a very interesting article you posted yesterday. Enlightning on the part for the awareness of how ESPN is really trying the change the marketing strategies. Plenty of plus' & minus' in there.

I'm already shivering from thinking about Reno during the middle of Nov. after the sunsets.
The pigskin could be rock hard, as Tiger Balm should be a sponsor for that paticular game. Nothing like rubbed on heat below the longjohns for cold weather survival.

Never been to Reno at that time of year Sounds absolutely nasty. And, you sit on METAL on top of that? Geez, I sure hope you do not stick to the seat -- sort of like that boy getting his tongue stuck to the flag pole in "A Christmas Story".

I thought sitting at Martin Stadium or the Seahawk's Qwest Field was bad. At least we did not have the cutting winds -- just cold and snow.

Maverick, McTruck, Wafan,

Good morning to you gentlemen. I've been to a couple NV games when I lived in N. CA. Had a great time, good fans and Red Hook on tap. This year's game one might have to chip the ice of the top of the beer to drink 'em! It's actually not that bad with some good gloves and most important: a good hat/watchcap. I've got an 'H' logo watchcap that covered the ears well.

Ted, haven't seen you around for awhile? Hopefully will have some good reports from Spring practice for all of us to get pumped up with anticipation.

Funny, our son will be starting college in the Bay area this coming fall season. Raised in Hawaii, loves the mild weather in S.F.

Expressed excitement with the probability of attending the San Jose St. game in Oct., but shrugged to the notion of Reno in Nov. for a night game.
That told me the real story from a fans point of view.
Didn't think about the metal seat scenario until you mentioned it. Better wear gortex. :)

If I had to rank the games I'm worried about that NV comes in at #1. I know many will disagree with #2 and #3: San Jose State and New Mexico St. I know Coach Tomey is losing some of his key players to graduation, but he's Dick Tomey at home. NM St. can simply put up the points. That should be an entertaining game to watch. Everyone's heads going back and forth like a tennis match.

Since Nakoa subsidies the food do the athletes have to pay less? Do the non-athletes pay the full amount or the subsidized amount? Or do they have to pay at all?

Seems wrong if the non-athletes do not have to pay while the athletes have to pay.

I went to a Nevada game a few years back and we were definately unprepared. When we drove up, the first sign we were in trouble was watching the Nevada fans bundled up, carrying wool blankets into the stadium. Next sign was the snow covered truck in the parking lot. Needless to say, we froze our okole's AND we lost. I was thinking about going this year but with the game in mid November, I'll pass.

99club, I agree with your nr. 2&3 points, since our warriors have not totally proven themselves yet on the road. But with our improved defense we should be able to handle them, unless Dick Tomey suddenly turns into JJ, which I doubt. To stop NMS all we need are a little faster cornerbacks, which we should have and we'll be o.k. there also.

Maverick, we don't have dogs on ABO and we don't have gravity, so our pets look more like different size blowfish and people float around with them like holding balloons. Our ABO Keiki love them.

my predict is that jj will unveil his new run game that night. perhaps with colt under center more often than not.

i was thinking of going to this game, since i've never been to reno. but, our las vegas buddy advised against braving the severe conditions and the half hour walk to the bathroom.

The SJSU game should be interesting. Last year they hung with the Warriors for a while, but the relentless Luftwaffe attack wore them down. Dick Tomey hasn't changed his stripes on offense and hopefully with our deep linebacker corp we'll stop them again. Against Nevada last year, if I recall that right, we had them down good, but suddenly it seems, we got really sloppy and then the fumble at the end, whoa, scary. But then the great redemption with that great goalline stand that was a great memory.

June Jones has got to the one of, if not, the hardest working guy in the athletic division...

Well I could be wrong, but the amount of initiatives he has taken to better the football program really go un-noticed with many of the Warriors' local critics.

Sure some can say that being the highest paid state employee we should come to expect him to give it his all and then some, but it seems to me that things like the E'o Na Toa, e'o Na toa e program is something that should been spear-headed by folks like John McNamara or even our beloved AD.

Initiative.

JJ has been nothing but a positive figure for the entire University, not just the athletic program or the football team.

Too bad that kind of initiative doesn't seem to be contagious around the lower and upper campus.
