UH confirms N. Colorado; Your chance to speak out

UH finally — finally — confirmed that it is opening the season Sept. 1 against Northern Colorado.
In related news, Linda Lingle was re-elected as governor.

* * *
After some consideration, lawmakers decided not to accept public testimony during Monday's special meeting to discuss the state of the athletic department.
And that's why newspapers created blogs.
Today we will accept public testimony here. The rules are to be civil, hopefully constructive, and write as if you were giving actual testimony, which means refraining from using words such as "sucks" and "rocks." Collared shirts and footwear are not required.

Hey ST...

Forgot to mention yesterday, if anyone wanted to go to the briefing on Monday to watch HF and the gang speak to the Legislators, I can let someone use my parking space since my car will probably be in for preventive maintenance if they need one. Just let me know.

Okay..off to work. Talk to you guys later.

Riddle me this. . .
Why does the lawmakers need to hold a special meeting? Everyone in the state and a good portion of the mainland already knows the state of the athletic department.

With HF declaring no deadline for a possible different team on the season opener, does this really show the respect towards another opponent for preperation?

If an official announcement doesn't come through by the end of this month, UNC should be declared the season opener, out of respect towards both teams.
HF's forecasting in the past has been way off base, so his insight for some miracle with only a few months left is even more short sighted.
The legislation should hopefully see this clouded perception.

I was reading the Fresno State website to get some info for the upcoming baseball series. I wonder if they know what a Wahine is or they are just giving the team locker room motivation??

"Fresno State (31-25, 16-5) will head to Hawai'i (31-22, 9-12) to play in its last conference series finale before beginning WAC Tournament action in Nev. Reno. The Bulldogs will face the Rainbow Wahine starting Saturday at 9:35 p.m. and follow on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. and Monday at 9:35 p.m. All games listed are Pacific Standard Time.

Faith,

To answer your question, usually briefing like the one on Mon are a chance for the legislature to ask questions and get information from the departments being asked to come and brief the Legislature (i.e. the Athletic Dept.) The goal is to get the word from "horse's mouth." so to speak.

As for my two cents, I think that for some of the issues like Cooke Field and Murakami Stadium, that the legislature needs to move more CIP funds to Manoa so that those facilities can be refurbished. As for some of the other issues (i.e. Frasier's leadership, lack of a schedule, etc) are not in the purview of the legislature per say since that would be micro-managining the school. What I would be comfortbale having the legislature address is employee accountability for the whole of the university not just athletics. In other words, how does UH hold employees accountable and evaluate the preformance of all employee and what are the remedies for employees who are not meeting up to par?

Illinois Bow comments that: "Why does the lawmakers need to hold a special meeting?"

Leadership! Find out where everyone's going, go to the head of the line, and lead!

Slightly cynical... but resolution of the problems where you capture the substance of the problem - air it out - and come to a conclusion or resolution.

If you come to the conclusion that HF is not doing his job, Each claim that is made - 5% of the AD budget is spent on HF's travel; though we are up there in budget with other WAC schools, we are fifth or six is maintaining or improving our facilities; the schedule should have been done years ago and so forth, all of these add up to the fact that the AD is not doing his job.

Or you could state that (1) there is a problem up there in Manoa with the A Department; (2) who is to blame. (3) how do we resolve the problem (4) will our resolution solve the problem.

Whether you are begin with the premise that HF is doing a bum job OR that there is a problem with the Department, you got to have the facts before you.

In essence, give the guy a fair hearing (then hang him!)

for me...

i would like to know the results of the survey conducted recently. i believe that should be available for public review.

i would like for the legislative group tasked with this inquiry or what ever you want to call it to interview all the coaches, associate head coaches, assoc a.d.'s, administrative heads, and the like. i would like for this to later be released to the public. for this instance and in the future the "gag order" should be lifted for all contracted staffers.

i would like to have a list of his travels and a detailed explanation of each trips purpose and results. i would like to know how many diversions of route was also a part of each trip. i would like to know who accompanied him on each trip whether paid by the university or not. in addition what was the total amount spent.

i would like to know the comparison between a.d. travels vs recruiting budget.

i think that regardless of what goes down, hf will never stand up and take full responsibility for it. never will he just take it on the chin, he will forever be offering excuses for his real shortcomings. he will never realize his folly nor will he ever reach down and communicate with the public.

well, i could go on and on. but, i'll stop here.

Last year, I heard Frazier say on the radio, "The longer I wait, the better teams I can schedule."

And today, Frazier tries to sneak an unprecedented SECOND 1-AA team past us through the back door.

Frazier still doesn't get it. If he was honest and upfront at the start, Hawaii fans would not be so upset with him as they are now. We all know he has a difficult job made even more so with the football team's recent success.

But his problem is that he acts like he's a Big Man and he's got everything under control. Well, a Big Man should be big enough to say he's sorry too.

I don't think the scheduling problem would have happened if Jim Donovan was hired as our AD in 2002. But let's assume it did--with two 1-AA opponents--and Donovan was the AD now. The big difference is that Jim Donovan would have been honest and upfront with us. And I guarantee you Hawaii fans would have understood and there wouldn't be the same level of anger and frustration as there is now. Alas, I doubt Frazier will ever get this.

i wonder how many millions of dollars will be lost in revenues with the two d1aa teams vs what could have been sellout games against bcs type teams?

what about the potential impact high profile teams that bring huge entourages and fans could have been for the state's economy?

what about potential tv money not realized?

what about the exposure a nationally televised game could have brought?

"The people of Hawai`i have got to understand ..." Herman says of having 7 home games a season. BUT, give him credit, he gives "the people of Hawai`i" 7 home games, 4 WAC, two Div 1 aa teams and Washington. (Two Div 1aa teams and Washington is all HF could get UH with all his 'contacts' and expertise.)

"I've gotten calls, e-mails, regular mail of support. I don't go by message boards, which is an escape for people who want to hide. -- then he alienates UH Fans that enjoy discussing the games online with other fans.

"It's amazing, isn't it, in the middle of all of this? As long as they know when home games are, there's no issue."
--HF says of season ticket sales after the first week. Again, reflecting very little respect and appreciation for the fans. (Season ticket renewals were quietly extended by a month and there is still no announcement of the totals.)

The Charleston Southern game, a Div 1aa team in the fourth week of the season should never have been booked. That was an earlier sign of desperation.

The University of Northern Colorado added insult to injury to fans who wanted their schedule for a possible BCS contenter school.

Where is our "pleasant surprise?"

Morning, Tsaikos. Good comments all. It is crystal clear, when one analyzes this whole, sordid schedule mess, that the one glaring problem that exacerbated this whole situation, is HF's total lack of communication with the fan base, mixed in with spin, spin and more spin. Wether it was from arrogance or incompetence makes no difference, it all falls squarely in Fraziers lap. The sad thing about all this, he still doesn't get it.

Personally I really don't think much will come of this hearing. Frazier will talk in circles, the legislators will bluster, look at me, look at me, I'm doing something. Pretty soon all's quiet followed by the usual fizzle. The best case scenario for me would be that UH will get some funds out of this to speed up the facilities improvement, but I'm quite sure that nothing will happen to Frazier. A hui ho.

MIH--You have a great memory. Or a great tape recorder. You should email these greatest quotes to Rep. Jerry Chang for whatever it's worth. Sadly, I doubt anything will come out of this meeting. When the soap story broke, I sent an email entitled "UH Athletics Needs help" to every single legislator, the Governor and all the UH bigwigs. The only response I received was from one legislator who said he could not reply UNLESS I provided him with my address to prove I lived in his district. I kid you not. As for our so-called UH leaders like Chancellor Konan and President McClain, they're backing Herman Frazier 100%.
Konan said so herself on TV last night when being interviewed about this meeting. I guess these big shots spend so much time in the rarified air, they can't see anything that's happening below amongst us mere mortals. For example, McClain drives around in a luxury sports convertible. Even with the top down, he can't see how terrible Cooke Field has become.

I'm not defending HF but consider this:

-HF would have a schedule if Michigan Sate did not drop out.

-Assuming any Div I-A team is schedule for the 13th game, 2 Div I-AA does not really impact us. It only makes the Hawaii 13th game an non-factor when comparing to other teams--pretty much wasting a unique opportunity. With 12 games eligible for bowl consideration, it puts on the same level field with all the other schools. The only reason that this matters so much this year is this particular team has a potential Heisman candidate and chance for a BCS bowl. The strength of schedule this year is paramount when you factor in those items. In other years, 2 Div 1-AA schools would have helped with the win/loss stats but not made any other difference. It is not the case this particular year.

-No teams want to play us. UH is now a potential threat to any team. For home games, it is not a trip to paradise with a gauranteed win anymore. Top teams do not want to play us because they gain nothing by beating us--they will not move up significantly in rankings. If a top team loses, however, they will plummet in the rankings. Non-ranked teams are scared to be embarrased. Why would a middle of the road non-BCS team want to run the risk of having 63-10 on the scoreboard?

Ragardless of those points HF gets paid the big bucks and should be working feverishly to fix the situation.

You are correct BUT...there are 2 things to consider: First our Hawaii exemption may be in jepardy if we don't take advantage of a 13th game. Second we WILL lose revenue by not having a 13th (home) game. I recall someone tossed out the potential revenue loss, regardless of the opponent, to be a million bucks!

No teams want to play us. UH is now a potential threat to any team. For home games, it is not a trip to paradise with a gauranteed win anymore. Correct again, but it does beg the question as to why HF didn't complete the schedule in 2005 when we were 5-7. Or even in 2004 when we lost Timmy Chang and Chad Owens? why wasn't it competed eariler. McChicken St was only one game - and we knew they weren't coming BEFORE the 2006 season started. What was he doing? Maybe we should look at his travel schedule?

That's why I preceded the comment by putting "Assuming any Div I-A team is schedule for the 13th game"

The key word in there is "any."

Any Div I-AA could keep the Hawaii exemption intact.

A 12 game regular season or a 3rd Div I-AA team would be an absolute failure and would definitly jeopardize the Hawaii exemption.

The reality is that UH has to more than prove themselves to be a contender for a BCS bowl and a below 15 ranking.

Even if Cal was scheudled as the 13th game, and we decimated them, we would still have issues with recognition and respect.

Even if we had multiple ranked teams in our out of conference schedule, and beat the daylights out of them, we would still have issues with recognition and respect.

The reality is that UH is in the WAC, and therefore get no respect.

We can hope all we want, but we all know that Colt's Heisman candidacy and a BCS bowl, are both longshots.

It's just magnified by the fact that the schedule is so horrible.

"No team wants to play UH" is a lie. If that were true we might as well close the athletic programs for lack of competition.

This "No team wants to play UH" is a nice excuse to divert attention from Frazier's incompetence. Of course no team is going to want to play UH when they are asked in May of 2007 for a game in August 2007. Teams don't have any openings in their schedule -- they couldn't play us if they wanted too.

A look at the top storylines coming out of spring
By Olin Buchanan, Rivals.com College Football Senior Writer

Olin Buchanan
Rivals.com
We are still months away from college football season.

Spring practices are over, and some important questions have been answered.

That said, there have been an abundance of stories to keep the mind occupied as we wait for autumn.

If the 2007 season proves half as eventful as the offseason, it will definitely be worth the wait.

We'll look forward to the practices in August that will signal the coming season. But until then, let's consider 25 of the more interesting stories of the offseason.

They are in no particular order, and many are of the off-the-field variety:

1. April foolishness

Six Penn State football players – safety Anthony Scirrotto, cornerback Justin King, linebacker Jerome Hayes, defensive tackle Christopher Baker, cornerback Lydell Sargeant and linebacker Tyrell Sales – were arrested after barging into an off-campus apartment and being involved in an April 1 melee that sent two men to the hospital.

The fight stemmed from a street altercation with three inhabitants of the apartment, one of which reportedly punched Scirrotto's girlfriend.

Charges were eventually dropped against King, Hayes, Sargeant and Sales. Scirrotto and Baker still face charges.

2. The intramural teams should be real good

During a mid-February press conference, Colorado coach Dan Hawkins revealed he'd received an anonymous letter from a parent complaining that players did not receive enough of a break in the summer.

That prompted Hawkins to begin a classic rant in which he bellowed: "IT'S DIVISON I FOOTBALL. IT'S THE BIG 12. IT AIN'T INTRAMURALS. GO PLAY INTRAMURALS, BROTHER."

That unsigned letter may have explained – at least to some degree – why Colorado finished 2-10 in 2006.

3. Wanted: A punter

Texas Tech coach Mike Leach does things a little differently. While some coaches claim they never read the papers, Leach advertises in them.

Graduation, injuries and ineligibility left the Red Raiders without a punter this spring, so Leach placed an ad in the Daily Toreador – Tech's student newspaper – offering a chance to try out for the team.

The response was overwhelming. Leach said his voice mail was full. He found some guys to get through the spring, but won't carry any on the roster this fall.

4. Isn't Stanford the school that loves trees?

Among the reasons Cal coach Jeff Tedford signed a long-term contract after the 2004 season was a promise to expand the football stadium and construct a sports facility.

But in late January environmentalists protested the impending construction by planting themselves in a grove of oak trees that would be cut. The protesters camped out in limbs and next to trunks for a month. Some reportedly even protested nude.

Furthermore, the city of Berkeley and some environmental organizations filed lawsuits to stop developers from cutting the trees for the expansion, which would eliminate "Tightwad Hill," an overlook which offers a view of the game without purchasing a ticket.

A restraining order was issued to delay construction.

5. Nutt(s) in Arkansas

The offseason has been harder on Arkansas coach Houston Nutt than any of the nine seasons he's been on the sideline in Fayetteville.

Reports surfaced that Teresa Prewett, a Nutt family friend and prominent Arkansas booster, sent a scathing e-mail to quarterback Mitch Mustain. The quarterback has since transferred to Southern California. Nutt seemed to put out that fire by banning the booster from the sideline.

Later, there were accusations that Nutt was involved in an extramarital affair with a Little Rock television reporter Donna Bragg. Nutt and his wife both denied the accusations.

Then, Arkansas resident John David Terry fired a lawsuit against the university saying it failed to properly investigate the e-mail scandal.

All this occurred after the Razorbacks completed a 10-4 season and won the SEC's Western Division. Imagine the fallout had the Razorbacks finished 9-5.

6. Fortunately, they didn't hire Schnellenberger

Tim and Hannah Witt of Hartselle, Ala., are such devoted Alabama fans that when their newborn son arrived in March they named him Saban, for Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban.

Saban – the infant, not the coach – weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces.

The couple already had a son named Tyde.

Not to be outdone, a Columbus, Ohio, couple named their first son Tressel Hayes Huffines for Buckeye coaches Jim Tressel and Woody Hayes.

Birth records show that since 2003 at least six Ohio couples have named children Tressel.

7. The company line

Just three months after he was hired by new Boston College coach Jeff Jagodzinski, Jim Turner resigned as the Eagles offensive line coach during spring football practice.

Turner, a former BC team captain, cited philosophical difference in the direction of the program for his resignation.

There were reports that the line was having trouble learning the zone-blocking scheme Jagodzinski uses.

Jagodzinski then hired Texas Tech offensive line coach Jack Bicknell Jr.

8. Thanks for the tip

South Florida quarterback Matt Grothe was arrested while working as a bartender at a sports bar near campus.

Grothe was cited for serving two beers to an 18-year-old who was working with officers from the Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco.

USF coach Jim Leavitt said he was unaware Grothe was working there.

The arrest was of secondary important, though. The Bull Ring Sports Bar is frequented by USF fans and boosters, who might be a little more generous in tipping a bartender that's also a quarterback.

Grothe reportedly quit the job, but it might be a matter of time before the NCAA bans athletes from working as bartenders, waiters, bell hops, taxi drivers or any other job that receives tips.

9. Maybe she should register at K-Mart

Boise State tailback Ian Johnson made national news when he proposed to his girlfriend, cheerleader Chrissy Popadics, immediately after the Broncos' Fiesta Bowl victory over Oklahoma.

However, the NCAA stepped in and mandated that wedding gifts cannot be too expensive and no boosters can be invited.

To ensure they don't break any NCAA rules, the couple isn't revealing the venue of their July 28 wedding.

That is, if it really is on July 28.

10. That would be an adjective

Public speaking is nothing new to college football coaches, but LSU's Les Miles broke new ground when he dropped a very bad word at the Bayou Bash recruiting party in February.

Miles told an estimated audience of 5,000 - which included women and children: "We're looking forward to playing Florida. We're looking forward to playing Auburn. But we have a new rival in (expletive) Alabama."

Although he reportedly received a standing ovation, Miles later apologized for his choice of words.

Just for the record, LSU plays Florida on Oct. 6, plays Auburn on Oct. 20 and plays (expletive) Alabama on Nov. 3.

11. But did he hit the target?

Nebraska quarterback Sam Keller was cited for disturbing the peace for yelling profanities at a woman who took a parking spot he was waiting for in a campus parking garage.

Keller also reportedly threw a plastic cup at her car.

Charges against Keller were eventually dropped.

12. Time will tell

New Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh made big news – and perhaps a significant enemy – when he told a reporter that Pete Carroll was a short-timer at USC.

"He'll be there one more year. That's what I've heard. I heard it (from) inside the staff," Harbaugh said.

Carroll reacted as expected.

"If he's going to make statements like that, he ought to get his information right. And if he has any questions about it, he should call me," Carroll said.

USC plays host to Stanford on Oct. 6. Take the Trojans and give the points – no matter the line.

13. Isn't that like watching a game of solitaire?

Any doubts about the importance of Alabama football to Crimson Tide fans were removed when more than 92,000 attended the A-Day spring game.

But perhaps even more impressive was the fact that 75,301 attended Ohio State's spring game. The difference was Alabama's spring game offered free admission. Ohio State fans had to pay $5 to attend.

14. It looked like it hurted

Four-year-old Caden Thomas needed 30 stitches to close a gash in his head after Colorado State receiver George Hill crashed into him at the Rams' spring game.

The collision forced Caden to hit his forehead against a padded wall just beyond the end zone.

Afterward Caden, who appeared on 'The Today Show' among others, said: "It kind of hurted."

Caden's father Mike said Hill's quick hands kept the accident from being worse.

"George did a great job because we watched (the tape) frame by frame, and there's subtle things that George did that dampened the blow - by bringing his head back at the last moment, getting his left arm wrapped around Caden at the right moment," Mike Thomas said.

Hill, by the way, has a 2-year-old daughter.

15. Out on an island

Hawaii athletic director Herman Frazier admitted he miscalculated while compiling the Warriors' 2007 schedule and is still trying to add two more games.

The problems began for Hawaii, which can schedule 13 games, when Michigan State pulled out of a game.

Then discussions with Michigan and Southern California fell through. Frazier admitted he erred when failing to schedule road games against Texas A&M, North Carolina State, Texas Tech or Louisville, but he was hoping for another home game.

He also wanted to schedule an opponent from a BCS conference to enhance the Warriors chances to going to a prominent bowl game.

Instead, Hawaii has only added Division I-AA Charleston Southern.

Many high-profile teams have declined to face Hawaii citing difficult travel issues. You wonder if the prospect of facing quarterback Colt Brennan and one of the nation's best offenses is a factor, too.

16. We're No. 1 … 47 years later

In April, the University of Washington doubled the number of its football national championships when it announced it would claim the 1960 national championship.

The defunct Helms Foundation, which was one of 17 organizations to name a national champion for 1960, selected the 10-1 Huskies as the best team in the land. It was the only organization to pick Washington.

Minnesota is typically viewed as the 1960 national champion, having finished first in both the Associated Press and United Press International final polls.

But Washington has a case. The Huskies defeated Minnesota 17-7 in the Rose Bowl that season.

17. From running backs to limping backs

It was bad enough that Syracuse ranked 97th in rushing offense during 2006, but the Orange actually had worse luck running this spring.

Delone Carter, who led Syracuse with 713 rushing yards last season, sustained a hip injury in spring practice that required surgery and will force him out of the 2007 season.

To complicate matters, Curtis Brinkley - who rushed for 571 yards last year - suffered a knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery.

18. Davis undergoes chemotherapy treatments

While undergoing a routine dental exam, North Carolina coach Butch Davis had a cancerous growth removed from his gum.

Tests revealed it to be non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and there was no other cancerous tissue in his body. However, Davis underwent chemotherapy as a precaution.

19. We have ways of making you talk

Alabama coach Nick Saban started tongues wagging because his would not.

Saban apparently agreed to an interview with a national writer, who then traveled to Tuscaloosa. But once there, Saban shunned him and was then harshly criticized.

Saban, who also angered the Alabama media by closing a scrimmage, offered an apology and consented to the interview. Later, he told the media he enjoyed working with them.

20. He's not that bad, after all

Saban became a frequent caller to Enterprise (Ala.) High School football coach Kevin Collins after the school sustained extensive damage from a tornado March 1.

"He was one of the first people that called me after it hit," Collins said. "He told me his prayers are with us and to let him know if there's anything he could do to help us."

Enterprise was left without a field, locker rooms and much of its equipment. With his $4 million annual salary, Saban could provide significant help, but the NCAA would likely frown on that.

So he just offered concern and encouragement.

"He's checked on me frequently and I've been touched by that," Collins said. "A man in his situation, not really knowing anybody in the area but still reaching out to us out of genuine concern, it's meant a lot to me."

21. Toledo player accused of fixing games

Toledo senior running back Harvey "Scooter" McDougle was charged with recruiting Rockets football and basketball players to fix games on behalf of a local gambler.

A criminal complaint said one player was offered $10,000 to sit out a football game and other players received cash and other gifts to shave points in games.

Bribery charges against McDougle were later dropped, although the U.S. attorney's office said the investigation would continue.

22. Turning the other cheek

South Carolina lineman Justin Sorensen did the right thing, but it still turned out wrong.

The 6-foot-7, 323-pound Sorensen missed some practice time this spring with head injuries suffered during a St. Patrick's Day party.

Sorensen tried to walk away from an altercation in a Columbia restaurant, but as he turned around he was hit in the back of the head with a beer bottle.

23. Carr isn't playing

Michigan coach Lloyd Carr suspended three players from spring practice, including receiver Adrian Arrington, tight end Carson Butler and defensive lineman Eugene Germany.

He refused to comment further, saying only that their return in the fall was "possible but not probable."

24. Outlined against a blue, gray April sky?

Demetrius Jones, Jimmy Clausen, Zach Frazer and Evan Sharpley might be Notre Dame's most intriguing foursome since the Horsemen of 1924.

Which one would emerge as the Irish quarterback? That has been the subject of speculation for months.

But Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis wouldn't give any indication of which might have an edge this spring. Each quarterback spent one week with the first team offense during the month of spring football.

Weis indicated he'd settle on a No. 1 and No. 2 quarterback, perhaps later this month.

25. The insignificance of football

On April 16, a gunman senselessly murdered 32 people on the Virginia Tech campus in the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history.

The nation grieved and offered much support and prayer for the victims, their families and the Virginia Tech community.

The Virginia Tech spring football game, which was scheduled for the following Saturday, was canceled. Football, which is so popular in Blacksburg, never seemed so insignificant.

The Hokies will open their 2007 season against East Carolina, but travel to face LSU on Sept. 8 in a game that will match two communities who have recently dealt with tragedy. In 2005, LSU's season was altered and the people of Louisiana were affected by the damage of Hurricane Katrina.

You're right, "No team wants to play UH" is not true.

A more clear way to say it is:

No team wants to play UH, when more desirable options are available.

You have to consider the remainder of my statement earlier for that to work. Refer back to my 10:00 post for that.

Since the Rivals.com story was published, the news for UH has gotten worse. Olin was focused only on football, and his article came out before the official announcement of Northern Colorado.

News to Olin -- Frazier's incompetence goes way beyond football, but consider the facts pertaining to football.

Football is the biggest money maker for college athletic programs. It is generally well accepted that the better the schedule, the greater the fan interest, which is supposed to translate into increased revenues. I don't know anyone that would disagree that this is generally how it is supposed to work.

So why is it that Herman Frazier can schedule 13 games for Hawaii, and as of May 17, 2007, with the season less than four months away, Hawaii just announced its 12th game, against Northern Colorado. Northern Colorado is a 1-AA team that went 1-10 last year. Assuming Hawaii wins this hot opening game, its later game against 1-AA opponent Charleston Southern will not count. In case you are not familiar with Buccaneers, they play such non-BCS conference powerhouses as Presbyterian (you know, as in the mighty Blue Hose)(make sure you get the spelling right so you don't end up in Imus soup), Wingate, North Greenville, Savannah State, Edward Waters and Gardner-Webb.

It's not like Hawaii needs a break from facing its fellow-WAC competitors. Idaho, New Mexico State, Louisiana Tech and Utah State went a combined 12-37 last year.

Granted Boise State, Fresno State and Nevada have been competitive and look to decent teams again, all the teams have key losses, with a decent number hooking with NFL teams.

While Hawaii too lost a lot of talent (5 NFL draftees, 5 NFL free agents signees), Heisman candidate Colt Brennan returns, and the trio of Bess, Grice-Mullins and Rivers could each have 1,000 receiving yards this year.

Hawaii closed the year rated 24th in the country. With Colt back and plenty of talented guys around him, Hawaii should have been this year's Boise State. Instead, they will never get the chance thanks to Herman Frazier.

Looking beyond football, Frazier took so long in hiring a basketball coach that the team has zero recruits to replace its top scorer and top rebounder.

Returning to football, Colt Brennan must apparently go to the media before the football team can get soap in its locker room. I think the media didn't understand that story -- it was not about Colt being a whiner, it was about Frazier being incompetent, but Colt being the tactful guy he is was reluctant to point the finger at the AD.

I'm not as tactful as Colt. Colt for Heisman; Frazier for AD anywhere but Hawaii. Fire Frazier!

I can agree with your statement. It may be more appropriate to say that "teams are more hesitant to play UH now than they were a few years ago" particularly in the Von Appen years.

While this may be true, and I am sure teams, especially big name teams, do a cost/benefit analysis of playing UH. I mean, I can remember Lou Holtz and John Robinson, when he was with USC, saying that most of the benefit in playing UH was on the side of UH.

You are correct on the timing issue however. This year it isn't a matter of not "wanting to play us" but more of a problem scheduling us in on already filled schedules.

The reality is that UH is in the WAC, and therefore get no respect.

That's why our OCC has to be better than most. Also we will always be critized for playing more home games. These same crtics seem to forget that we travel more than every FB team, college or pro. Also ever try going west to east? A lot tougher than flying east to west. soehow all that gets lost.

Louisville features another top qb prospect, and their program is much closer to UH than the top 15 programs. That would have been a great game for interest, revenue, Heisman votes, BCS points, everything -- a win-win. It should have been an easy "great, we accept, anytime, anywhere."

Instead we have the likes Northern Colorado and Charleston Southern. Expect under 20,000 fans at each game.

James, I appreciate your point, which is well stated, but opting not to play UH due to a cost/benefit analysis is a far cry from saying opponents are scared to play UH.

I concede there are reasons teams may not want to play UH -- distance, expense, interference with conference play -- lots of things, but I doubt any team says they will never play UH, so it is up to the AD to make it work, and obviously approaching teams at the last minute isn't the way to go about it.

Frasier's leadership, lack of a schedule, etc) are not in the purview of the legislature per say since that would be micro-managing the school.

Very well said. I think this is exactly what is happening with the legislature. The meeting has nothing to do per se with addressing the ineffectiveness of Frazier. I think the legislature wants to do its part so that if UH doesn't make it to the next level, it won't be because the funding for refurbishment of some facilities got bungled.

I agree. It's called building strong relationships with other "name" programs, not just those with Olympic Committee tie-ins.

Even with the Michigan debacle, there were 5 other open weeks to book 4 other teams through all of last season. Why did he have to wait for the last minute to book those? Michigan was just an excuse to put scheduling off till the last minute.

Greed came in the last minute to save face, and it slapped him right back.

Error of judgement followed by error of judgement.. followed by error of judgement... followed by...

Wow.. we also start the following season with two powerhouse teams in the first three weeks -- BOTH on the road? Eh? Nice HF.. very nice.. I feel like he's selling us as a third-rate.. maybe even fouth-rate Div 1a team. Maybe that's how he really sees the program.

IF the team goes undefeated, we will end up with two scenarios:

1. The team ends up in the BCS with the big payout and Herman and his followers will boast about how the schedule difficulties helped them.
Arrogant Herman also gets to keep his job.

2. The team's strength of schedule does not allow them to rank high enough in the BCS rankings and the team ends up in the Hawaii Bowl. At that point Herman loses his job due his screwups i.e. lost revenue ($9M BCS payout versus $800K Hawaii Bowl payout), poor home attendance due to scheduling, etc.

So as the season goes on and the team is undefeated and climbing in the polls, I'll probably be so angry and happy at the same time.

I'm hoping the team goes undefeated, goes to the BCS, and Herman still loses his job.

I've been thinking, if HF can survive this storm and all the public's discontent, what do we have in store for the upcoming years?

If by some miracle, both Div I-AA games draw good crowds (~35,000+ range), I can picture HF going back to his office thinking "it doesn't matter who I schedule, because the people will come." I can picture him taking on the same mentality that he did when he implemented the premium seating plans and PPV packages. I remember him saying something like, "Premium seating and PPV didn't adversely affect UH football attendance. We still drew 40,000+ the last couple games on our schedule last year...blah..blah..blah..."

We seem to be in some sort of paradox, where we are probably damned if we do, and damned if we don't. We can't NOT go to the games because we love our Warriors and want to see them play, but by going, it shows HF that it really doesn't matter who he puts on the schedule because the people will come anyway. AWWWWW THE FRUSTRATION!

Here is another attempt to dispel the myth that fear is attributable for why UH has struggled to schedule its non-conference games.

Purdue was not scared to come here and play, and it was a very entertaining game. OK, let's do that again, right?

Attached is a link for Purdue's future schedules.

In 2007, Purdue has already scheduled 12 games; no openings remain.

In 2008, Purdue has already scheduled 12 games; no openings remain.

In 2009, Purdue has already scheduled 12 games; no openings remain.

In 2010, Purdue has already scheduled 9 games; just 3 openings remain.

Herman Frazier is a full 3 years behind Purdue's AD.

Need we continue to look much further to see what the problem REALLY is?

Someone with some balls needs to drop the ax and say "Goodbye Herman."

The Top Ten Reasons Why UH Football is so special.
10. Recruiting prospects for 2008 commitments have been way ahead of any previous year. Take a look at Rainbowsportsnetwork site. UH will sign a 4 or 5 star quarterback.
9. H. Frazier will get a 13th game at home w/ a Division I-A opponent. The reason is it's all about revenue and the bottom line that feeds the athletic dept.
If he doesn't, we can say "down goes Frazier, down goes Frazier!!!!"
8. June Jones will continue to say every week about something about his player or players that he/they are "unbelievable."
7. Colt Brennan is "unbelievable." But the big surprise of the season will be the defense.
They will be, ah, "unbelievable."
6. Brennan will pass for 6,000 yards and 60 TDs, playing most of the games only 3 quarters at best. This assumes a 13th game. Right Herman!!!!!
5. Four receives will have 1,000 yards seasons. Bess, Grice-Mullins, Rivers, and either Hawthorne or Malcom Lane.
4. UH will cover the spread in all of their lined games.
3. UH will not punt in at least 6 of their games.
2. UH will score 100 points in their first game against UNC. Brennan will throw for 8 TD in the first half and will watch the rest of the game. Graunke will throw for 3 TDs, RBs will score for 2, Funaki will throw for 1, and special teams and defense will score twice. If I did the math that's about 112 points give or take any missed x-points. The entire roster will play including 4th and 5th string players. Herman, it's a joke scheduling this opponent.
And, the #1 reason why to watch UH Football this year is:
Phil Steele will prove correct that UH will go undefeated because the schedule's toughest teams is at home. Brennan will win the Heisman followed by Steve Slaton of W. Virginia. UH will average at least 55 points per game. UH will go to a BSC bowl. Will they win? After the game, June Jones, in the locker room screams!!!! "This is Division I-A football!!!! This is the WAC (Warriors Are Champions). It's just Unbelievable."

You know its a shame that HF did not get the schedule completed at least a year ago. The last AD had the schedules completed 3 years in advance. That would mean, this years schedule is HF 1st football schedule. Last years schedule was the orevious AD's schedule HY. BTW USC was set up by HY. Maybe HF should start scheduling the 2008, 2009, and 2010 schedule now so that he can justify his $180,000 salary + perks. I'm out thanks for reading.

Agreed. That is why, when we talked about the scheduling debacle way back when, I remember stating that teams being "afraid" to play UH because of the great season we had last year was a farce since HF should have had the schedule already done.

In fact, I mentioned Notre Dame having their schedules mostly completed up to the 2012 season and that most schools do have a large portion of their schedules completed years in advance. I mean, that Purdue game you talked about was scheduled like 6 years before it happened.

Situation: open seat(s) on 40-yd line, row 37, Mauka sideline - fan buys tickets at Aloha Stadium on game day - does the cost include the "premium seating surcharge"?

JJ mentioned "football endowment fund" in reference to getting donations from former UH players who make it to the NFL - what is this? how does it work? who can donate? where does money go?

UH received "limited autonomy" from the Legislature - what does this mean? how does it work? what will legislature fund and won't fund? who is responsible for securing funding for portion not covered by legislature?

Informational hearing to determine what? hope I can attend.

I know this is off subject but why does the legislature have to pay for the new stadium turf at the baseball stadium. Shouldn't the Athletic Department fund that. Don't they have a $20,000,000 million plus operating budget? Personally we can use the $2,000,000 tax payer money for other issues like helping the homeless and the Hawaii's kids that go hungry everyday. Go figure.

Jay,

I have no idea how much UH would have to spend to buy out his contract but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt much as having a system wide $114 million deficit when it comes to repair and maintainance.

So actually they could just add that on the "to-do-list".

W/ Jerry Chang's 'informational hearing' re: UH athletics, finances, etc set for this coming Monday, it might be a very good idea for bloggers on this site to email him w/ specific concerns/issues so that our side/perspectives will be heard. It would really be a shame if the UH & its reps went on the defensive, which we know they will, & undermine what could be a constructive & productive hearing. Basically, we need to be heard so it's not a washout.

Jerry's a good man, was once a hell of a boxer and Special Forces medic, and he will listen...we just have to let him know what others really think about this whole debacle this year with the schedule and what not.

at yesterday's feeding frenzy i made an announcement that HF would have a 10 am press conference on monday to announce the 'S'. well, he must have had a scheduling conflict to 'leak' the confirmation announcement out. i am sure he would have rather had all the media there, lights glaring, cameras clicking, video rolling for this 'momentous' announcement, (thank you Mr. F said all the little people gathered around his statuesque self.....all in sheer adoration for this 'worldly' leader to bestow his beneveolence upon the mere commoners)

bottom line is this...schedule is overdue, way overdue, and it is time to answer the questions...maybe the legislature is not the 'best' place for this inquiry, but it is a start. don't you find it ironic that the public cannot testify.....

as Al said earlier, isn't it our tax dollars going to fund this facility and this school?

So many posts to read. All of them good points.

Send your comments now for Rep Jerry Chang to read. His email address has been shown before but here it is again:

repchang@Capitol.hawaii.gov

My comments have already been sent to Rep. Chang. You have nothing to lose except possible disclosure of your true name when you send your email--but you have lots to possibly lose if they don't see much people caring about what is going on. No public testimony so only choices are this blog and telling Rep. Chang. I took the attitude that at least I could furnish some comments or questions that I really would like a legislator ask of HF, Chancellor Konan, President McClain, and the Board of Regents (if they attend). Someone should have been overseeing what HF was doing--who was it supposed to be and why the failure?

Even if nothing really comes out of the hearings, I have to believe that everyone now understands that if HF continues to do a lousy job, people will complain--and loudly! His supervisors better learn now that the public expects them to do a better job. I can only hope that HF learns something. Again, everyone email Rep. Chang so that HF knows we exists!

Protest to superiors--probably won't do much as already evidenced by their comments and attitude that they believe HF is doing a good job. When you really think about it, sure it would be nice if a superior stood up and said he will listen and check into the "charges" and do something about it--they had all this time and no one has done it and probably no one will. I don't think anyone above HF will do anything and admit that perhaps they did not do a good job overseeing HF.

As for Northern Colorado, only a few questions, how much are they being paid by UH? Who oversees these contracts and what makes them so gullible to believe HF? His immediate supervisor is Chancellor Konan--is she approving all of these contracts along with approving his travels?

Willi,

Re: your question about the $2 million from the state for Murakami, The issue is that UH is still a state agency. Because of this, major repair (like upgrades and refurbishing Murakami) go through the legislative process for Major Capitol improvment. What happenend, was that the legislature has already approved the $2 million for Murakami in a previous budget it's just that the governor has authorized UH to use the funds. So in reality, the $2 million was already going to be spend and wasn't taken away from some other program. The alternative would be for UH and the baseball team to get private funds and donation to fund the project which would probably have taken longer to raise. I also agree that we should email any concerns we have to the members of the House and Senate Ed Commitees.

University of Hawai'i men's basketball coach Bob Nash announced the signings of four new recruits for the 2007-08 season.

Nash's first recruiting class includes:

• Paul Campbell, a 6-10 forward out of Arkansas-Fort Smith College. He averaged 3.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game last season. He will have three seasons of eligibility at UH.

• Conrad Fitzgerald, a 6-4 guard out of Pendleton High in Florida. He averaged nearly 17 points and 5 rebounds per game as a senior. He will have four seasons of eligibility at UH.

• Adhar Mayen, a 6-7 forward out of Hill College in Texas. He averaged 13.7 points and 9.2 rebounds per game as a freshman last season. He will have three seasons of eligibility at UH.

• Kareem Nitoto, a 6-3 guard out of San Leandro High in California. He averaged 10.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game as a senior. He will have four seasons of eligibility at UH.

In addition, Nash said Beau Albrechtson of KaimukI High and Gary Satterwhite of Radford High will join the team as walk-on players.

Wow, at 2:oopm KHERM (ESPN 1420) breaks in with Hermie's news conference - $2 million for turf and seating repairs at Murakami Stadium.

Big woop!

Evidently, the powers to be are in the process of studies and to commence bids for turf replacements. If I heard right, the turf is SEVEN years past the manufacturer's guarantee. Not too safe. But when the tape job is on the turf, man!, not to safe.

When asked if the job will be finished before the start of Hawaii Winter Baseball, Hermie said the concern is the work be finished for UH Baseball.

In another words, Hermie dont give a rip of Hawaii Winter Baseball. Duane Kurisu worked long and hard to bring winter baseball back and Hermie finds another way to alienate a huge benefactor to baseball in Hawaii.

A-House,
You have asked a good question about the premium seating contribution and the cost of individual game tickets.

It is not likely that an individual game ticket would be available in the choice location you described. But if it was, the individual game ticket price in effect does have the contribution in it but the ticket buyer doesn't get the tax deduction. The tax deduction is one of the incentives for a season ticketholder. Other incentives are that they get the best seats or the ones they want for the entire season, parking priviledges, etc.

The cost of season tickets along the sideline is $145. On the sidelines the contribution can range from $40 to $200, excluding the high roller section. http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/Ticket/fb.pdf

If I recall correctly, an individual game ticket on the sidelines ran from $35 to $38 last year. Doing the math, you'll see that many season ticketholders pay out of pocket less than someone who bought individual game tickets. With the tax deduction, all season ticketholders get a better deal than individual ticket buyers on an after-tax basis.

ST has requested public testimony on his Warrior Beat blog. Let's direct our attention to what we think is in the community's best interest and what Jerry Chang's inquiries are supposed to accomplish on Monday.

I contend that the key issue for which concrete judgements can be made is the status of UH facilities planning and implementation. Complaints about the 2007 football schedule and the AD's performance are soomewhat "subjective" unless we have a definitive plan against which we can measure performance. In facilities planning, we can hold specific people accountable for specific tasks and goals. This is the Colt "soap" issue. I think that there are serious questions as to why the legislature needs to hold hearings "for an update" on the progress of athletic facilities plans. Why must the QB of the football team be the source of information for a progress report? I am surprised that the legislature does not have access to plans and reports for source and use of funds. I am disappointed that Mr. Chang's committees need to ask about "problems and concerns" and not have access to the answers in professional reports. I would be very concerned about "over view" and who is responsible for what? I am concerned about the level of professional management (reports?) of the State and the University. Where does the buck stop? ST, what do you propose that the Warrior Beat do to maximize the value of Monday's meeting? Obviously we cannot send the comments on the blog as is. What is the game plan to highlight the issues (other than have Colt explain that there is no soap).

'Bows lose another point guard

By Dayton Morinaga
Advertiser Staff Writer

The need for point guards for the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team became greater last night.

Todd Lowenthal, a touted point guard recruit in 2006, said he will not return to play for the Rainbow Warriors.

"It was a tough decision," he said. "But I felt like I wasted a year basketball-wise, and I had to make a decision based on that."

Lowenthal scored just one point all of last season as a true freshman. He appeared in 15 games, playing a total of 36 minutes.

Bob Nash was named the new head coach for the 'Bows on April 13, but Lowenthal said he wanted to "start over" with a different program.

"I like Coach Nash, but I want to start over while I still have a chance to play," he said. "I didn't want to take a chance of just sitting again."

Lowenthal did receive the team's Academic Award after achieving a 4.0 grade point average last season.

He said he is in the process of selecting another school.

"I played with some great guys, and I made a lot of friends in Hawai'i," Lowenthal said. "That's the part I'm going to miss the most."

Lowenthal is the second point guard to leave the 'Bows in the past month. Junior-to-be Dominic Waters is transferring to Portland State.

Yesterday was the last day for new recruits to sign binding national letters of intent.

Nash has yet to announce any signings, but apparently some are on the way. He said he would make an announcement as soon as the paper work on the new recruits is processed, perhaps by tomorrow.

With the loss of Lowenthal, the 'Bows have five scholarships to fill for the 2007-08 season.

Even more reason for UH fans to be more disappointed in HF--although any reader of this blog knew about that game for like months. I still want to know what UH is paying them to play UH. Also, is there another of those future games that HF also committed UH to with a guarantee also not less than this year? And I really want to know whom if any reviews his work and gives him the OK to go ahead.

I know everyone wants to keep a positive outlook and I also want to have a positive outlook. I am very positive about the coaches, players and fans. Like most other readers and posters, I just want to look out for those that do not have similar interests.

When listing complaints, don't forget about the huge payday CSU is getting...seems like HF panicked about the schedule and way overpaid for that game. Ferd Lewis published the details of that horrible deal, which sets a precedent for every future home game that UH schedules.

Maverick also had the details of the UNC contract, which I think he posted here awhile ago. Looks like we will give UNC more than 50% more money than we've been giving to Pac-10 teams...sad. This is especially bad when you consider that UNC cannot count as a win for any D-1A school because they don't give out enough scholarships, so they had no other option for a payday. Aside from them having too few scholarships and going 1-10 last season, they are getting so much money!

I'll grant you that UH has a lot of work to do to go undefeated, even with the weakness of the current schedule. UH has lost more talent than any of their upcoming opponents, however UH also has a better returning talent and better incoming talent, and the home games against Boise St and Fresno St will help.

I think goal #1 is to win the WAC.
I'm not sure what the other goals are, and maybe going undefeated is #2, but with the current schedule there will be no BCS opportunity and probably no Heisman Trophy for Colt, simply because no matter what UH does on the field it can't overcome the weakness of the schedule.

Interesting that our favorite person is taking bows for the Murakami Stadium face lift.

I have what I would consider a trustworthy source who had a very interesting story on the turf replacement process. As the story goes, a couple of very interested and concerned individuals saw the turf was in disrepair. They took it upon themselves to speak with an influential member of the legislative body with regard to the situation with the turf and the potential risk the situation present not only to the players but the state.

The $2 million being referenced was appropriated to address the situation. What occurred following that was interesting. As the story goes, when it was discovered that a $2 million appropriation was in place to help the ball field, the person we've referenced wanted to move that money to address repair work on the track. He was told in no uncertain terms that the grant was for the repair of the Murakami field turf.

You can read into this whatever you want. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, it may simply be that he does not have a full grasp of how the legislature works with regard to appropriations. Then again, it would give rise to further thoughts.

For starters, it makes it an official inquiry. 2nd, we need to email Jerry Chang to voice our concerns re: the AD's continuing runaround, incompetency, inefficiency, lack of communication ('these people don't understand what I have to deal with...). But, per Tom Mui above, we need to give him (Jerry & committee) the facts of our concerns. Jerry will listen, as long as we give him the straight scoop and temper what may seem to others as 'personal' attacks on the AD. Once we dip to that level, you can bet his supporters/excuse-makers will dredge up all kinds of stuff to negate our issues.

Just an afterthought...McClain gives him an A or A+. You know, when teachers give assignments nowadays, they include a rubric, which is nothing more than a table saying that you met all the conditions of, let's say, 'balancing' the budget, so you get 5 points; if you didn't but made some progress, you get a 3. What are the rubrics which determined how HF deserved an A or A+ from the good Dr. McClain? Take the 'S', for example...an A?

Aw, heck...I gotta go get a cold one to cool off! BUT...email Jerry, state the facts, & be cool.

Something is wrong with the whole way that the Athletic Department is set up. Normally in most organizations the top person reviews Senior Managements' work directly below him. Those Senior Managers review the work of middle managers and they in turn review the work of the lower personnel, etc. Now who is going to review the top person if he tries to control too much and screws up. Is he going to review himself? If HF reviews the work of HF, I guess he would say he is doing a great job.

To the next higher level. Chancellor Konan, if the Chancellor were to ask the Athletic Director how the athletic Department was going, HF would say everything is going fine.

To the next higher level. President McClain asking the Chancellor how the Athletic Department is doing, the Chancellor would say everything is fine and the Athletic Director is doing a good job--regardless of what the blog readers, students, coaches and athletes know.

The problem with the UH Athletic Department is that the AD is doing whatever he wants including doing the football schedule. Why would he be doing that? Why wouldn't the Football coaching staff take care of that? Now think, if the AD gets a great schedule what are people going to say--thinking that Colt is coming back and most of the receivers are still here, would the person that does a great schedule look like a winner? Of course he would, if he really got a great schedule! What if he didn't think about getting a lousy schedule, well now we have reality--guess who should be blamed. If the Football coaching staff made the schedule would anyone be able to blame the AD or would we just accept reality--I could accept the fact that the coaching staff couldn't get good teams because I know they really would try their best to get the best opponents--not just to grandstand! When I find out that the AD does not want help from the football coaching staff for opponents, I ask myself WHY? Why would he not accept help? It just doesn't make sense unless like I said previously, he wants to grandstand.

This then leads me to another related subject. Memory is fading so correct me if I am wrong. Didn't HF also say he would personally lead the promotion of Colt for Heisman? What do you guys think? Will he do a great job? If Colt does win the Heisman, then the AD would look like he did a great job--we all know that really means that Colt and all the other players and coaches did a great job. Are you worried now?

UH doesn't charge any. I think they put it up for vote once and the students voted against it. $838,000 discretionary budget????? What? Is there any way to find out where THAT money is spent?

I will volunteer my services to the State of Hawaii to audit every penny that HF has spent during his tenure. I audit T&E (travel & entertainment) costs for multi-million dollar feature motion pictures and various television productions. Auditing this BS would be a snap. HF needs to turn over TA's (travel authorizations), details of expenses and how they were for the promotion of UH (NOT THE OLYMPICS). UH also needs to have RCM (records compliance management) software for litigation discovery. I could go on and on, but I just busted a vein in my neck typing this much.

I WILL WORK FOR FREE IN THIS ENDEAVOR. AND EVEN PAY MY OWN TRAVEL & EXPENSES. All I would ask in return is that any monies I find which were spent outside of the boundaries of the AD's authority be reimbursed back to the State by the AD and/or whoever approved the bogus costs, be earmarked for facilities improvements.

Garret,

Thank you for the above references to the UNC money. I hope Maverick does posts with the information--to bad Mr. Tsai or Ferd Lewis cannot get the information into the Advertiser as one of their stories--then more information for the "hearing." Unfortunately bad at the same time as other teams might ask for way higher amounts because of what HF is offering for I-AA teams.

Twocents,

Ferd already wrote a story about the CSU $$, and they are getting even more than UNC. So, UNC is getting 50% more than our normal for Pac-10 opponents, but CSU is getting even more than that and Ferd has published that already.

I think that Ferd found out about the CSU contract by the Freedom of Information Act. ST seemed to refer to that here when the article came out. Since the UNC deal I guess wasn't completely acknowledged until today, I'm guessing he couldn't find that info out before.

So, CSU is getting more than UNC...but at least CSU is a far better D-1A team than UNC. CSU will count as a win towards a bowl game, UNC would not even if they were UH's only D-1AA game.

Thanks for the clarification that HF makes $250,000 every year until 2010.............thats $1,000,000 in just 4 years.

The question is what has he done for the University so far......

Just like Dobelle, pay him big bucks because he was supposedly linked to a U.S. president and would be able to fund raise all this money for the University............THEN............doesn't come through with being able to fund raise the supposedly millions of dollars because of his contacts. Instead the taxpayers pay all this money to him and he digs after a few years back to the mainland.

This is called a Trade deficit

HF same thing.........hire him for big bucks with little results.......

Trade deficit....yet to be seen........so far not looking too good.

Football is one of the few sports that make the athletic department big dollars $$$$$$$, why would you neglect to get a schedule especially when we are ranked in the top 25???????

There is no excuse for the football team to not have.

The legislature should demand that HF sets up the FB schedule 3 years in advance, give or take a game

The problem, all the other schools worth playing have their schedules already filled until 2010. I guess UH might get a decent schedule in 2011........

Give credit to JJ and the FB boys, they are a class act and it shows.

The APR is a complicated formula that is constantly evolving. But as I understand it, Hawaii will be partially penalized for losing Waters and Lowenthal.
Hawaii will still get credit for Waters and Lowenthal being in good academic standing last year, but they will get penalized for Waters and Lowenthal transferring. In effect, both those guys will score "1 out of 2."
It's not as bad as a John Wilder, who basically left school in the middle of the semester when he found out he was academically ineligible. He will score "0 out of 2."
Unless the rule has changed, that's how I think it stands.

Could Mr. Frazier please explain what those accomplisments are? He took two years to hire his two associate ADs, went to the Olympics instead of hiring a women's basketball coach in 2004, talked about a fundraising effort of $25 million that has yet to get off the ground, and talks about a master plan that is being developed. Those are the only things I know that he has "accomplished". Oh, and he balanced the budget by letting our existing facilities go to pot. They forget to mention that in hiring the women's and men's swim coach, he unemployed a coach that was training a world champion to be. This swimmer left UH and took the WORLD championship the next year. The coach who was let go still lives at UH with his wife who is a professor there.

I think Herman has done a fairly decent job up until now. Granted, he probably did miscalculate in regard to this year's football schedule but I also see many positives in his administration. Being the smart guy that he is, I believe Herman will learn from this seasons scheduling difficulties and come back with more challenging football schedules in upcoming years. Most of the posts prior to this one have two things in common: they are driven by emotion, and they are written by people who do not know Herman Frazier. As a person who knows Herman and looking at the current situation from a dispassionate perspective I can see that the schedule issue could be perceived as a major failure but one failure does not a career make. I suggest you look deeper at his total body of work. I did and I can see that his positive accomplishments far outweigh one poor football schedule. Balancing the budget while being underfunded by the state is a huge accomplishment. While the jury is still out on Bob Nash, the rest of his coaching and administrative hires have been good ones. Innovative ideas such as the Hmail email program and eticket hawaii have been smashing successes as have premium seating concept and PPV TV which have contributed greatly to balancing the aforementioned budget. But I guess the greatest measure of the job performance of a man is what do his bosses think about him? David McClain and Denise Konan are on record as saying that they think he is doing a great job. The Board of Regents spoke even louder, with their checkbook, when they extended his contract along with giving him a nice pay raise. All this flies in the face of the emotional fan upset with the football schedule and Herman's percieved aloofness and who think that they know what the AD should be doing. It reminds me of the time when a new football coach came to town and the team had a poor season and the perception was that the coach was too aloof, he didn't pay attention to recruiting defense, and didn't run the ball enough. Well June Jones still has the same personality, he still throws the ball more than anyone, but he does now recruit more defense. The same people that are calling for Herman's head now were calling for June's dismissal back then. All I'm asking is that we take an objective look at the entire situation and let the man do his job. Just as June learned that he had to start making offers earlier and recruit more defense, I believe Herman is up to the task of coming up with better schedules. Herman Frazier was considered a great "get" when he first came here, a rising star of an athletic administrator. This opinion was validated when he was chosen as the Chef de Mission for the U.S. Olympic Delegation to the 2004 Olympic games in Athens a position much more prestigious and difficult than any athletic director position. The USOC basically had their choice of any athletic administrator in America and they chose Herman Frazier. It really comes down to this question: Who is more likely to be correct? A group of the top athletic minds in the United States as well as respected professionals such as Konan, McClain, and the BOR or a bunch of very passionate, emotional, and somewhat underinformed fans.

When reading this entire blog today, it is like one, long point by point indictment of HF and as hard as I've tried, I couldn't come up with a single, reasonable defense. This ridiculous and sad state of affairs is extremely depressing. In a year when we probably have our best team ever and we should be looking forward to the season with great joy and excitement, we are forced to discuss endlessly the ineptitude of our AD deptm and its leadership vacuum.

Almost 10 years ago JJ was hired to rescue our program from oblivion, which he did with great success. Then all the big promises where made to take it to the next level. Again JJ delivered. But what about everybody else? The entire leadership at UH has failed JJ and the rest of us. Our legislators have no vision, never had. Doesn't everybody realize that our Football team is a hell of a lot more than a bunch of athletes? It is literally an economic engine that accomplishes many different and positive aspects for the entire State. A winning and nationally recognized team can uplift an entire community and that's only the emotional aspect. I don't think I have to repeat all the other benefits I'm sure we're all aware of.

We're standing on the threshhold of that elusive top level, but our fearless leaders keep jamming the door.

Kapolei warrior,

Why are the fans "uniformed?" Perhaps, not enough dissemination of information?
Maybe if there wasn't a gag order we'd know more? Hmmm..

But does that give HF the right to say things like:

"I've gotten calls, e-mails, regular mail of support. I don't go by message boards, which is an escape for people who want to hide."

And NOT apologize?

Or

"It's amazing, isn't it, in the middle of all of this? As long as they know when home games are, there's no issue."

OHH right.. it's because the fans are so uninformed that he has a right so say things like this about the fans?

This is the same Herman Frazier that.. per wikipedia:

"Frazier was criticized by some for leaving the University of Alabama-Birmingham with a $7.5 million deficit. His supporters noted that he had inherited a deficit and did not receive institutional support, while his detractors claimed that he was ineffective in increasing revenue.[2][7] "

Madinhawaii, I don't think hiring coaches is a big accomplishment, this should be just normal duty for an AD and as you've said, balancing the budget at the expense of total facilities neglect is dubius at best. If he has all these great plans, but doesn't inform the fan base, well, that's just plain PR stupidity. He better learns real fast to take the fans seriously and stop his condesending ways. We didn't hire a charge d'affairs but an AD, at least I thought so. What benefits has UH received from this assignment, I really would like to know.

Last season, the football players caught the passes, made the hits, and did the other things they needed to do to put the program on the "hot list" of up and coming teams for this year. The ONLY thing Frazier had to do to nearly guarantee Hawaii the respect its PLAYERS deserve was schedule some decent (not even stellar) out-of-conference opponents and fill a 13 game schedule.

He failed to get decent competition in that two of the OOC games are against Division I-AA teams that, quite literally, are not even on the same level. He should have not released Michigan State until a reasonably comparable opponent was SIGNED. In fact, from now on, opponents contracts should not include a by-out clause. Instead, if they wish to pull out of their committment, they should be required to find a team to play in their stead. Only after the new contract is signed should the original team be officially released.

I'm a Northern Colorado alum born and raised in Hawaii and I am glad my favorite team will play (not necessarily compete) against my alma mater, but other than those in Greeley and Hawaii, who cares? That's the major issue here. Colt Brennan and the UH football team has lofted a pass toward the endzone of notariety and Herman Frazier is JOGGING his route with buttered fingers while gazing at the cheerleaders. Hustle, keep your eye on the ball, and take advantage of the opportunities presented to you, Mr. Frazier or you will be grabbing nothing but bench soon.

Ted, I agree with you about the collective knowledge of this blog, it is indeed substantial. But can you also not see that much of the negative rhetoric in these overly negative and one sided posts are fueled by emotion? As avid sports fans we all enjoy playing monday morning quarterback at times, second guessing in hindsight the "obvious" mistakes made by the coach during the course of the game. I see this situation in a similar light, most of us think we know what the AD should be doing and when a mistake is made its very easy to point fingers and say "he should have done this or he should have done that" And thats fine, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But when it comes to an objective assessment of the overall situation I think the informed opinion of people within the chain of command just might be a little more accurate that that of an irate fan. As far a labeling me as biased, It appears to me that my post is one of the only one that actually considered both sides of the issue.

That all being said, I am in total agreement with you about one thing. I am so pumped up about next season it's incredible. I can't wait for the Warriors to start kicking okole.

KapoleiWarrior - you make your friend Herman Frazier's miscalculation of the football schedule sound like a very minor thing. If you are as knowledgeable about UH athletics as you seem to think, you would know that football revenues basically support all of the non-revenue sports on the UH campus.

A weak schedule affects season ticket numbers as well as attendance at home games. And pay-per-view revenue is not going to bail out the university as it has in previous years because the top four games are all being broadcasted for free by ESPN.

Add the fact that it doesn't appear that a 13th game is going to played and it becomes very clear that UH is headed towards a financial disaster this season. This is no minor scheduling difficulty as you characterize it. It is a much more serious problem that that and someone has to be held accountable.

In the case of the People of the State of Hawaii v. Herman Frazier, Konan, McClain et al., one can only take so many excuses about why important matters have not been addressed at UHAD and the incredible lack of oversight and lack of accountability with regard to UHAD by Chan. Konan and Pres. McClain that have become manifestly apparent to all except for those who are toadies to the Frazier regime. The list of topics is a lengthy one: 2007 football schedule, hiring selection process on basketball coach, "Soapgate", promised fundraising and master plan for $25 million in capital improvements, ongoing maintenance and repair of facilities, lack of credibility and standing in the community, lack of effective communication skills with the community, etc. It is an embarassment here on the Mainland where UH is our pride and joy being the flagship state university and only D1a program to have its image harmed nationally by this AD who cannot even take care of something as simple as soap dispensers. He has to go and serious questions need to be asked as to where Konan and McClain were in this sorry passion play in terms of how/if they maintained oversight over the Imperial Herman Frazier. he sure seemed to travel a lot while things were burning back in Honolulu with regard to UHAD operations.

Mike, I never said the schedule snafu was a minor thing. It was a major miscalculation that will have some ramifications that will be felt on the bottom line. And Herman Frazier is on record as saying he is accountable and responsible for the state of the schedule. I'm sure it is a major embarrassment to him. But its basically a done deal, nothing we can do about the schedule now, firing Herman isn't going to help. No the best thing we can do now is go to the games and support our team. I and about 25,000 other die hard fans will be at the stadium for every game no matter who we play. It's sad to me if others don't come because we don't have enough marquee teams on the schedule.

I think the informed opinion of people within the chain of command

I think that's called 'collusion'.

A $60,000.00 AD had more success scheduling and often replaced teams that cancelled at the last hour with other D1 opponents. He didn't make excuses. Somehow he got the job done. He wasn't a gold medalist, didn't come with impressive credentials, he lacked experience so he learned to do things the hard way, but he didn't mess up the schedule.

Is it too much to ask a $250,000.00 AD?

Do I feel sorry for someone who makes $250,000.00 and can not complete the 2007 Warrior Football schedule?

NO!

Do I feel sorry for an athletic director who can not supply essestial supplies to his athletes and staff?

NO!

Do I feel sorry for an athletic director traveling all over the country, spending a ton money doing who knows what?

NO!

Many of my friends and family think I'm wasting my money in supporting Warrior Athletics. My wife and I dont see it that way, but we are in the minority. Many are just turned off high ticket prices and were particularly upset when their loge tickets were taken away to see to the"high rollers"

Basically Herman Frazier just does not get it, or does he wants to get it. Local people dont want to taken as fools.

We should get some feedback from Alabama-Birmingham folks.
That article kinda sets the tone.

The one thing that has bothered me through all of this is that JJ's contract has not been signed sealed and delivered. I know the HF fiasco is important but I think JJ's contract should be the top priority at the moment, one question is why would the BOR give HF a 5 year extension an not JJ, he has done more for the athletic department than anyone.

I think they need to sign JJ to the longest contract that they can.

Pomai,

The BOR oversees HF, so they were responsible for HF's contract. HF oversees the coaches, so HF (not the BOR) is responsible for JJ's contract.

HF is on record after JJ's last contract negotiation that he would NOT allow JJ's contract to have less than a year left before extending it. He said that he learned from his mistake. By the way, JJ's contract has less than a year left on it and HF has been so consumed by the schedule and other issues (late hiring BN, etc.) that JJ doesn't have his new contract yet.

Did HF follow what he publicly said? Did he learn his lesson from the last time JJ's contract was running out? JJ has no extension so I think even HF's biggest supporters would have a hard time here.

Garret I know that HF is responsible for JJ's contract but I don't think he signs the contract, so therefore why would the BOR give HF 5 years an let HF only give JJ 2/3 years?

I guess I will answer my own question - The BOR doesn't give a hoot about the Football program either, or they would not have let it get into the position it is now in. I just feel that not only has HF screwed it up but also his bosses, an they should be held accountably for it also. But sad to say they won't, an even more sadly I don't think HF will either.

It's just a shame that the right people are not in the right positions to help the Warriors, JJ has said that he would take us to the next level, well we where at the doorstep and I am afraid the Administration has slammed the door in their face.

mctruck,

I've had lots of those types of things when I've missed something right in front of me. Those "senior moments" were funny when I had then as a teen...but now that I'm almost 40 I have to worry a little more.

Garret I know that HF is responsible for JJ's contract but I don't think he signs the contract, so therefore why would the BOR give HF 5 years an let HF only give JJ 2/3 years?

Pomai,

I wonder about the same disparity in years also. The coaching hires and contracts are basically a rubber stamp by the BORs for whoever HF picks.

However, I'll take a different perspective and say that this is a good thing. I don't want the BORs to micro-manage the Athletic Department. Coaching contracts would be impossible if they can't be sure that when the coach/AD come to an agreement that they actually will get the contracts approve.

So, the BORs have to trust the AD. They can always review the AD when it is time for a new contract. 3-year coaching contracts are not unusual, though if JJ went 11-3 last season at a bigger budget school he'd probably get 5 years. 5-year AD contracts, especially when not much had been proven at that time, was what I didn't understand and I've been saying this for a LONG time.

brew808,

Thank you for the well wishes! I'm really looking forward to seeing Ted tomorrow. I taking red-eye flight and he's driving 90 minutes, so we both might be a little tired then.

Dayton,

I forgot to thank you for the update on the last scholarship for UH. It would be great if they didn't lose a scholarship, as with 3 transfers (1 in bad standing) out of 12 or so spots, I had assumed the worst.

Have fun in D'World; like D'land it's a fun place; even for adults ;-)

If possible take a pic w/Ted holding the infamous football for all the Tsaikos to admire...

Good morning to all the Tsaikos around the world...

Wow, we are a worldwide organization now.....Thanks Steve M. for the lists of posters...and thanks for saying I was one skinny guy...Personally, I think I need to drop to about 190...

Joe..that was cool what Sun God said about ND and the Europe trip....and the Purdue facilities story was awesome too....a weight room that is like 5 times the size of UH's, meeting facilities and rooms where school functions or parties can be held ....wow...

al...I remember that BYU game well...20 yard line, makai section, orange, right next to all the Laie people and other BYU fans....I remember all those years leading up that first victory...so close but ohhhh so far...

In fact, I still have a t-shirt.."Payback in Paradise"...

Morning, Tsaikos. Sure was an interesting day in Tsaiko land. A ton of good points where made and very little defense was played for Frazier except his press secretary, kapoleiwarrior. The AD has nobody but himself to blame for this mess. Are we emotional? No, are we angry? Most assuredly. Our favorite child, the UH program, has been seriously neglected at a time when the stakes have never been higher. It's like your child scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT and someone lost the paper. Would you be justifiably angry? Sure you would. HF needs to find a decent 13th game, no ifs or buts about it, to receive even the most minute form of redemption. It's like politics, once a politician becomes very unpopular, he will rarely survive the next election.

Long Time UH Fan,

Thank you for the nice words. I'm was already really looking forward to the trip, but meeting Ted makes it even better. I'll take a photo if Ted brings the football...but he might not want to bring it too near another TSAIKO!

I'm very lucky that Lori picked me. She is a wonderful wife and an awesome mother to our kids, so I am truly blessed. I used to entertain all of my married friends with my crazy social life (they told me they used to live vicariously through me), but I'm glad to have settled down.

Aloha Tom Mui....

Yup that was the '74 game where UH beat BYU 15-13 on Reinhold Stuprich's five FG's at the old termite palace..HC was Larry Price, QB was Alex Kaloi...UH wouldn't beat BYU for many years after that..until Gabriel was QB...

There was a time when UH football biggest fan was the governor of this state.

Yes, the late Governor Burns was one of UH's biggest fans and founded Ahahui Koa Anuenue back in '67...

Show me a University that is financially secure and I'll show its athletic foundation; show me a championship team, and I'll show you a student body academically driven by the same zeal for excellence."

Governor of Hawaii 1962-1974

Everytime I hear Herman Frazier talk, I can't help but think that this guy shouldn't be the AD, but rather the Assistant AD, at best.

He's fast to take credit when things go his way and equally fast in passing the buck when things don't. BUT he apparently doesn't see an opportunity when it's presented or know how to capitalize on opportunities. An administrator like that needs a huge budget to be successful, so that the need for money won't be a factor. In a mid-major like Hawaii, we need someone who is capable of eliciting favorable responses to things happening around him/her.

When your star athlete speaks out about "obvious" deplorable conditions, jump on the wagon ask for help, donations, and new season tickets so that these needs can be addressed. Don't knock the kid down who's trying to help.

When the legislature releases funds to replace the field turf at Murakami, don't complain about the negative attention that the Athletic Department is getting. Don't talk about the needs of all the "other" departments and schools and say you aren't the only one. Exude gratitude, give credit to the politicians that pushed it through. Emphasize the how great the stadium will look and be. Say how much safer the field will be and how it will help the team return to the glory days.

Then in closing say something like, "We are all aware of that the University of Hawaii's athletic department is in sore need of repairs and attention in many areas. It is through generous actions such as these and the support of our loyal fans we have that I am confident we will be be able to address these needs and take care of each.. one by one. Thank you."

Then end it with that John Burns quote.

MIH,

I like your 8:49 post--shows a lot of insight on how a proper AD should be. The current AD is almost always defensive and blaming others. If he had apologized for screwing up and said he learned and will try better next time and work timely and effectively with everyone including the coaches, student/athletes and fans--if only he had said something to that effect many months ago, maybe I would feel differently now.

Explain 2004 Utah then. They were a Midmajor from a non-BCS conference (MWC), went 10-2 the year before, had no real history of being "recognized" and "respected" in previous years and was rewarded with a BCS at-large game in 2004 after going undefeated with a schedule with NO D1AA teams on it.

Even if UH beat multiple ranked teams they would get nowhere because they play in the WAC? Your argument is groundless. Explain the success of the BYU teams when they were WAC-affiliated.

Just because you gave up as a fan doesn't mean UH Football should give up as a Program.

isleStyle,

I agree. Respect is fleeting. Everybody in the world wants respect. It's one of the most powerful driving forces of nature. Furthermore, each of us, consciously or subconsciously is constantly on the lookout for those opportunities that can garner us a modicum of respect.

The same applies for our Warrior team. And we just wanted an opportunity for them to get that respect.

For the team, however, they will have to repeat that success year after year after year. For the WAC, the same thing.

That's why these schedules have to be made years in advance.

HF's inability to keep to or ahead of a schedule could hurt us irreparably down the road. (This was also his reputation at Alabama-Birmingham, I hear.)

Very well said! I totally agree. If we want to play a big team, let's not pus$yfoot around asking meekly if anyone wants to play with us. We sound like damm grade school kids who are embarrassed that no one likes us.

Let's face it. We want to play a big team and kick their a$$. If that is our goal, then let's make no bones about it and tell it like it is:

WE WILL PLAY ANY TOP 25 TEAM IN THE COUNTRY. ANYWHERE. ANYTIME. ANYPLACE. AND WE WILL EVEN PAY. WE DARE YOU TO CALL US OUT. WE DARE YOU AND HERE IS OUR PHONE NUMBER IF YOU HAVE THE GUTS.

Uncle ST, trying to reach you and Robert...e-mailed you and left word w/Robt's bro Rob Demello. It appears that I will be interviewing UCLA Head Coach Karl Dorrall between 1-4pm today in the Waikiki area. My needs do not demand exclusivity and Coach Dorrall has a very limited open time frame...so if you have any interest...I will facilitate it. Call or e-mail me ASAP so I can give them your cell #'s. Excuse the unconventionality, but I know the Tsaiko Wireless is mo' bettah than Western Union...they will alert you. BTW, I will ask if any UCLA vs. UH Football game was discussed, and why it didn't happen if it was.
