The Warrior Beat
Stephen Tsai knows University of Hawai'i sports, down to the last decimal of a 40-yard dash. He's lived UH sports since 1987. Few reporters get the inside information like he does. What Tsai writes is a daily must read.

Day 8: Practice I, practice II/video/Roberts arrives

Cornerback Calvin Roberts arrived this morning, then underwent a physical examination and attended an orientation class.
He said he likely will begin practicing Monday after receiving results of his medical exam.

* * *

Afternoon practice:
3:55 p.m. — Well, this is another version of the 220s — it seems everyone out here weighs under 220. The linemen have been excused from this practice, which is focusing on special teams.
Practicing as kick returners are Jason Rivers, Michael Washington, Kealoha Pilares and Keenan Jones.

4:05 p.m. — Whoops. Forgot to add Malcolm Lane as a kick returner.

4:20 p.m. — David Veikune is wearing a neck guard. He says he might have a strain. He said it's not serious and expects to be back tomorrow.

4:25 p.m. —The kick-return unit is divided into two groups: the front six and the back five, which includes the two returners. The front six are working on reading for on-side kicks, and kickoff direction.

4:30 p.m. — The offensive linemen have showed up. They finished a weight-training session. The special team players, except for the two kickers, have been dismissed.

Closing time — The offense went through some light drills.
John Estes (sprained left elbow) sat out the drills. He is not expected to resume practicing full-time until Monday.

Thanks to brother Mike and Princess Leila for covering this morning's practice.

Each year, most of the seniors design and distribute (for free, Mr. Compliance Guy) personalized T-shirts.
One of the most popular this year is a green Colt Brennan shirt.
There's one catch: It's not a Brennan creation.
Brennan said he and his family had nothing to do with that T-shirt line. He said he has no idea who produced those shirts.
Instead, Brennan said he is consulting with Fa'a Satale (Samson's dad) about designing his senior shirt. He said the shirts will be produced before the season opener.

By day and early night, the UH dance studios serve as the dormitories for training camp.
But deep into the night, several bed frames and box springs are placed on end to create . . . The Octagon.
That's where one-on-one pillow fights are staged.
All matches are in fun and most have the same result: one fight, two decisions.
After Le'Marcus Gibson and Eric Shaffer squared off, both declared themselves the winner. That was typical of nearly every battle.

* * *

Former UH wideout Ian Sample has learned journalism's oldest frustration: the pen might be mighty but an editor's eraser is mightier.
Some segments in his upcoming book about last season have been deleted, turning it from a tell-all to a tell-a-lot book.
But the one thing June Jones taught his receivers is to counter defenses. Sample is creating a Web site where he will print the deleted segments.

* * *

It was hardly love at first byte.
On the first day this blog went public, Homey asked questions about Wahine volleyball recruits, the basketball team and the golf team's chances of breaking into the top 10.
I ignored him.
Sort of.
Realizing that it is best to go with the strengths, this all-sports blog (management's promise) became mostly a discussion about UH football. Credit goes to Homey 's unanswered questions for creating the shape of this blog.
Here's Homey, in his own words:
"Homey's profile: Short, late 40s, played sports in high school, went to UH (yes, I actually went there and graduated with, of all things, a BS degree), originally from Waipahu and now residing in Mililani, married w/3 kids, drive a gas guzzler (damn ethanol blend), have never voted in my life, favorite beer is Guinness, don't shave on weekends, use weed killer instead of pulling the weeds, have 2 mean-looking dogs and 2 mean-looking guinea pigs and 3 mean-looking turtles, eat all kinds of food, weigh less than 200 pounds so I don't qualify for large Tsaiko status, surfing and golf are lost passions, and that's about it."

* * *

Tomorrow we meet Florida Ted. And if we figure out the system, we will post his picture.

* * *

Good morning from the steamy UH practice field.

Offensive lineman Laupepa Letuli is back in pads and showing no sign of his hamstring injury.

Wide receiver Jason Rivers is also practicing after sitting out much of last practice with a stomped foot. No sign of Bigfoot so far today.

Linebacker Blaze Soares is still out nursing a deep bruise.

Inoke Funaki and CJ Hawthorne have already teamed for three highlight-worthy connections.

We're taking bets on who the bald dude with the aloha shirt and WAC championship ring is. We've ruled out Dan Robinson.

Looks like the Octagon has moved to the practice field. Prelim match: Ryan Grice-Mullen def. Hawthorne by sitting on him. No response from Ron Lee as Hawthorne calls for assistance. "Oh, OK, I see how it is..." Hawthorne says as he steps out of the ring.

Nothing like a good bullring to get the players, and the coaches, pumped. After 1-on-1 and 2-on-2 drills, Jeff Reinebold declared: "This is the best (expletive) defensive line I've seen in a long time."

Reinebold also challenged Fale Laeli to step it up today: "Fale! You're going to get more reps today, so if you want to move up on the depth chart, now's your chance. You have to show me what you've got!"

Scrimmage time...
Tough, tough catch from Jett Jasper off a pass from Shane Austin.
Funaki beats the blitz, complete to Hawthorne
Desmond Thomas intercepts Tyler Graunke
Graunke incomplete to Daniel Libre
Graunke complete to Salas
Funaki dump to Eric Shaffer under pressure
Funaki incomplete to Shaffer down the middle
Graunke incomplete to Shaffer
Graunke complete to Michael Washington
Funaki to Guyton Galdeira
Funaki rush for 13 yards

Practice over.

Gee, thanks Tsai! Unfortunately, today just happens to be a day that I will be away from a desktop and laptop. I will be super busy today, even stopping by at UH to take care of some paperwork and paying for some things that are due today. Then I'll be heading out for a lunch date with a hottie and then shopping for items that aren't located in one store. I'll be on tonight to check if anyone has any questions. I hope there are no questions cause everything you need to know about me is either in my bio or Garret's bio.

gigi - I majored in Computer Science and didn't vote cause I didn't like anyone. Kids aren't mean looking, dad is.

Calvin - Dogs must be mean looking 'cause when I walk them everyone crosses the street to avoid them. Guinea pigs are the meanest animals on the planet. Turtles are mean because they don't differentiate between food and fingers.

Permalink 08/10/07 @ 08:42
Considering how Chad Owens basically had his career shelved for 2 years because he fumbled twice in one game (and both fumbles were recovered by his team), why can't Moats' daily fumbles result in Nate getting past him in the depth chart?

Ryan Moats had a morning that's become far too common. He had a few impressive runs -- including a cut back that was one of the better moves in camp -- but he finished the drive by fumbling on the goal line. This isn't news, but Moats needs to hold onto the football.

Timmy and the rest of the Tiger-Cats will have a week off after their game tomorrow. I wonder if Timmy will come back to Hawaii during the break and watch training camp?

Taaffe gave the players a three-week schedule about a month ago, so they could start making travel arrangements rather than leaving it to this week.

"I told them 'I'm giving you plenty of advance warning, get your plans made, get all that stuff out of the way, so when we get into the game week for this game, you're not trying to make plane reservations or trying to decide where you're going after the game,'" he said yesterday.

Samson and the rest of the first team offense should play the whole first half...unusual for the first preseason game.

Cam Cameron plans to use most of his offensive starters throughout the first half during Miami's preseason debut. The move is a stark departure from past Miami coaches and most NFL teams that generally bench their starters after a couple of series in preseason openers.

Cameron was unavailable for comment Friday but his goal seems to be giving as much work as possible to an offense that is under reconstruction and needs repetitions together in a game setting.

Brown will be running behind a starting offensive line that also is expected to play at least through the first half.

In all, the Dolphins are expected to start four rookies on offense and defense with guard Drew Mormino and center Samson Satele joining Ginn and Soliai.

Do you have any insights on the Wahine Vollyball recruits?

What about the B-ball team? How are the recruits and what's the buzz about a replacement for Wallace?

Will be baseball team be pretenders? Was this past year a "lucky" season?

You would think the Golf teams at least be in the top ten. How come we cannot recruit better players? Same with Softball and Soccer. The Soccer coach gotta go.

what we forget is that, these are young men (kids) who may not or will not make sound decisions all the time. in fact, they will most often make a poor/'bad' decision rather than a sound one. they will tend to make emotionally based decisions more often than not. but, its okay, this paves the way for some deserving walk-on, and we have many at UH, that is good. by the same token we will get back a player who hastily went away only to find home again and a lot of success. so yeah, the coaches are right, every year you lose some but every year you gain some. it all works out and for the better. it is better to have hard working, team minded players than one who is disgruntled. you know the old saying "one bad apple spoils the whole bunch." good luck to them in their pursuit of happpiness. we will survive. go bows, oops warriors!

I guess Oscar will fight one more time...the $50 mil he made the last fight is a big incentive for him to fight again.

It was an emotional request. Oscar De La Hoya had barely lost the richest boxing match in history by one judge's 12th-round score when he was met by his wife, Millie, telling him she was pregnant with their second child and asking him to end his fighting career.

More than three months after his split-decision loss to unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr., De La Hoya, 34, said Friday he has yet to convince his wife that he should fight again, but proclaimed, "I'm not retired."

The starting center for Nevada broke his foot, the backup center got into a fistfight with the offensive line coach and the 3rd string guy has never played a down of D1 ball and he will probably get his first start against Nebraska, yeah I know welcome to college ball!!! The line in that game was 22 points and it will probably approach 30 pretty soon.

Again, the sum of the roots of this equation is what I weigh:

For Kekaniokawai and those who are awaiting my latest research endeavor, here is a sample of the data:

Hawaiʻi (Last 5 Years)
Overall Record: 42-25 (.627)
Conference Record: 26-14 (.650)
Non-Conference Record: 16-11 (.593)
Record vs. Non-Conf BCS: 5-7 (.417)
Record vs. AP Top 25: 0-8 (.000)
Record vs. AP Top 25 Non-Conf: 0-3 (.000)

I'll be able to update that data every year, so I can publish running five-year totals. The easy part was punching in the overall and conference records for each team; that was done in one day. The hard part is going through each schedule (5 schedules down, 584 to go), checking each against a list of BCS schools. Thankfully, ESPN.com lists each opponent with its AP Top 25 ranking if it was ranked at the time. Hopefully it'll be done sometime in the next couple of days. Until then, there's a sample of what the final results will look like (except it'll be in a spreadsheet-turned-PDF).

The Oklahoma compliance guy sure is confused...maybe they have too many violations for him to keep track of everything.
After consulting with a fellow Big 12 Conference school, the University of Oklahoma wants the NCAA to strike a self-reported secondary rules violation from its record.

Oklahoma originally reported that it had broken NCAA rules when it hung jerseys with three prospects' high school numbers in the Sooners' locker room when the recruits came to visit.

The university's executive director of compliance subsequently sent a letter to the NCAA asking to have that violation removed, according to documents obtained Friday through an open records request.

Interesting preseason philosophy by Miami's coach.

Cameron admitted that only "40 percent" of his multipronged offense has been installed, and fourth, his theme of the week to his team as he prepares for his first exhibition game as an NFL head coach is to "fail forward fast."

"In this business, we want them to fail," Cameron said Thursday. "Preseason games are awesome for teaching because it's a legitimate chance for them to fail and then we want them to fail forward fast.

"If you're failing forward that means you're failing, but you're learning. Then you've got to learn fast. Early in the first quarter, I want some guys to go out there and fail in the first quarter and then regroup and get it corrected in the second quarter. Or fail in the first half, and then dig down inside, get it corrected and then go out and correct it in the second half."

Actually "Michael" is not his birth name.
Our parents, suffering from a bout of Hermanitis, missed the deadline for naming him. (They were debating whether to go with Stuart to keep with the Stephen-Stephanie tradition.)
His original birth certificate reads: Baby Tsai.

My wife, who handles all of the business at our house, was groggy after giving birth. She put my son's middle name on the first-name line. So now he has two first names, like he's from the South or something.

He helped a college basketball player into an All-Pro tight end (Antonio Gates); a rookie center into a Pro Bowler (Nick Hardwick); and won with quarterbacks who were too old (Doug Flutie), too small (Flutie and Drew Brees) or too inexperienced (Philip Rivers).

In two weeks of training camp, Cameron has continued the theme.

Coaches have repeatedly re-shuffled the offensive line and played two rookies, center Samson Satele and guard Drew Mormino, and a third-year pro without an NFL start, tackle Anthony Alabi, with the first unit.

Cameron has given as many first-team reps to quarterback Cleo Lemon as to high-priced veteran acquisition Trent Green and experimented with 270-pound rookie fullback Reagan Mauia at backup tailback.

This actually doesn't sound that bad of a review for Nate:

NATE ILAOA, RUNNING BACK

Ilaoa is a big guy who has been effective in training camp when he gains a head of steam. He isn't quick or shifty, but Ilaoa has been able to get through holes and make some plays. He has been up and down catching the football, but with a couple of games ahead and with some chances to get into a groove, Ilaoa has a chance to make the coaches ponder the depth chart at halfback.

Interesting that Gruden wants one person to be their KR and PR, and Matt Jones is listed ahead of Chad Owens on the depth chart despite Matt not returning a single kickoff in training camp. Matt didn't return any kickoffs in the preseason game, not the greatest way to win a roster spot.

See Mark Jones is back to return this kickoff. Gruden emphasized this week the need to have one guy return punts AND kickoffs. In the past, Jones has done only punts. His best bet to make the final roster is to show he can do both. And, I'm not so sure he shouldn't have tried to bring that kick out of the end zone. He had a couple lanes that potentially have been exploited.

Ask A Scientist - Mathematics Archive
Quadratic Formula and roots of a cubic:

Any cubic, y^3 + p*y^2 + q*y + r = 0 can be reduced to x^3 + a*x + b = 0
by the substitution x = y - p/3 and where a = (3*q - p^2)/3 and
b = (2*p^3 - 9*p*q + 27*r)/27. Then the three solutions are given by:
x = A + B, -(A + B)/2 +/- (A - B)*sqrt(-3)/2
where A = [ sqrt((b/2)^2 + (a/3)^3) - b/2 ]^ 1/3
and B is same as A except for a minus sign in front of the sqrt.
... but I didn't follow this solution...

Free play time I guess. Rudy Guiliani really misspoke and there is a controversy going on in New York. This isn't as bad as Gore's "inventing the Internet" thing, but I'm curious how long it takes before this dies down.

Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani said Friday that he misspoke when he said he spent as much time, if not more, at ground zero exposed to the same health risks as workers combing the site after the Sept. 11 attacks.

"I think I could have said it better," he told nationally syndicated radio host Mike Gallagher. "You know, what I was saying was, 'I'm there with you.'"

The former New York mayor upset some firefighters and police officers when he said Thursday in Cincinnati that he was at ground zero "as often, if not more, than most of the workers."

"I was there working with them. I was exposed to exactly the same things they were exposed to. So in that sense, I'm one of them," he told reporters at a Los Angeles Dodgers-Cincinnati Reds baseball game.

Fire and police officials responded angrily, saying Giuliani did not do the same work as those involved in the rescue, recovery and cleanup from the 2001 terrorist attacks, which left many workers sick and injured.

Giuliani's explanation further angered his ground zero critics, prompting several to issue a statement demanding an apology.

"He is such a liar, because the only time he was down there was for photo ops with celebrities, with politicians, with diplomats," said deputy fire chief Jimmy Riches, who spent months digging for his firefighter son.

"On 9/11 all he did was run. He got that soot on him, and I don't think he's taken a shower since."

Harold Schaitberger, president of the International Association of Fire Fighters, a union that fiercely opposes Giuliani, said he doubted Giuliani misspoke.

"I think he was simply showing what his true character is - a self-absorbed, self-deluded promoter who got caught and is now just simply trying to backtrack," Schaitberger said.

Cameron laughed when asked if tonight's game means more for some players than others simply because the answer is pretty straightforward:

"Yes, plain and simple," he said.

There will be times tonight when the Dolphins coach expects players to go out and completely forget what they've been taught the past few weeks. In fact, you could say he's counting on it.

"I can tell you that there will be a significant number of guys Saturday night that abandon all technique," Cameron said. "It happens every year. They hold it in. They do it. They get to where they understand at meetings. Then they go out and they start to transfer it to practice.

"All of a sudden, you throw the lights on, they've got family in the stands and they go back to doing what they did senior year of high school. That's where the mistakes come. I'm looking forward to seeing which guys just have the belief in their technique. That's a huge part of the evaluation in early preseason games, especially with young guys."

I could hit 200 pounds eating Bob's Big Boy breakfasts. Short drive down to Bob's one way, short drive down to Koa Pancake another way, short drive down to Big Kahuna's for lunch another way; geez, no wonder everyone in Salt Lake lives in a condo, they need to climb the stairs to lose all that weight.

Wait, the bar is 45 #'s. Let me see, I'm a little rusty with my math...148.5 + 100 = 248.5

You should be benching that weight.

As for math, thank goodness my oldest daughter helps out the younger ones. It also helps that the oldest daughter's boyfriend is an EE major.

i had a big meal tonight...again. the boss and i went to phuket thai. this was our 2nd time there. we order this dinner for two, the manager says that is a lot of food. it could feed at least three. but the boss was so hungry, its 8:30 pm. she wants to also try this spicy eggplant dish, so we did.

then i said, aw, i really wanted try that crispy skin chicken. oh well. boss wins again.

lo and behold the mgr brings my a sampling of the chicken on the house. yeah. but, the boss ends up eating most of it. the eggplant sits there. i say, "eat it".

but, the rest of the stuff was to die for.

Bill Walsh planned his own memorial service in the months before his death with the same attention he paid to every aspect of the 49ers.

Even when a lengthy fight with leukemia finally sapped his strength last month, Walsh made sure Thursday's tribute at Stanford, Calif., would be a celebration of a Hall of Fame coach's life, as well as a chance for hundreds of old friends to praise and mourn.

Walsh's family and a cross-section of the football fraternity gathered at Stanford Memorial Church to praise the 49ers coach as an innovative leader and a loyal friend. More than 1,000 mourners honored Walsh, who died July 30 at 75.

Tampa did a really nice thing for Mike Alstott. Instead of having him retire earlier this week, they put him on injured reserve. Alstott basically is retired now, but they didn't want to cut him or have him retire because then he wouldn't get the $1.5 mil salary for the upcoming season. By putting him on IR, he gets his money.

Tampa may take that $1.5 mil salary cap burden, but Alstott played so well for them for so long that I'm glad they found a way to have him keep the money.

This reporter likes Cameron's play to play the OL starters at least a half...and I agree that Samson should get as much playing time as possible in the preseason.
The fact the offensive line, which is a hard-hat area under construction, is also supposed to play the first half is another stroke of genius. Play the rookies the entire game, I say. Let Drew Mormino and Samson Satele get their experience now rather during the regular season. At least let them go into the regular season with four games already under their jockstraps.

That's the way Don Shula approached it with Keith Sims and Richmond Webb 17 years ago, and I believe the strategy still works today.

Excellent job by Cynthia on the Nate article! There was information theree that I hadn't seen before, and I've probably read everything written about Nate and the Eagles. One example:

With heavy competition at the running back position, Ilaoa also has been training on the Eagles' special teams. He said he could also see himself as one of the special-team aces on punt-return coverage or kickoff coverage.

"You just come out here and just try to find some way you can fit in and try to help the team, and that's what everybody who is out here is trying to do — to make the team and find their way to contribute."

Nate Ilaoa, RB

Heckert: “Nate shows up. I'll tell you what, he's not real fast, but he's got real good feet and he's a natural ball carrier and he's tough. We've got a lot of good backs, but he's done some nice things and we're happy with where he is.”

We figured out how to get my older daughter to eat with us when we have poke. We don't call it poke, we call it tuna or ahi and she is fine. She loves canned tuna and raw salmon, so she was fine with raw tuna.

Both girls ate a ton of fish last night, which was nice...until I realized that meant I had less of Lori's poke. Oh well, Costco gives such a large quantity that I guess I'll still get my share.

mctruck,

I agree about Nate. I really hope that he does well in the preseason and makes the practice squad. With Moats' fumbling so much and with the way Philly runs the ball so much and Westbrook/Buckhalter getting banged up a little, maybe Nate would have a chance to get on the active roster if he starts on the practice squad.
