Fonoti arrives; Taking the haka to the fans

Great minds think alike.
HOUSTON — John Fonoti arrived this afternoon after a hectic travel schedule.
He was removed from the 64-player travel roster last week because he had to finish incomplete school work.
There is no limit on the travel roster for this week's non-conference game against UNLV. Fonoti was added to the travel roster yesterday, and he left Honolulu last night. He arrived in Houston at 12:30 p.m. He missed practice but was able to attend meetings and, more importantly, study hall.

* * *

June Jones agreed with one of our readers that it would be wonderful for the fans to perform the haka.
His version of the idea is to attach a wireless microphone to Timo Paepule, the Warriors' haka leader. As Paepule yells the chant, the words would appear on the Aloha Stadium JumboTron. He said 35,000 people performng the haka "would be awesome."

* * *

On this morning's Mountain West teleconference, UNLV's Mike Sanford said he was well aware of the haka controversy. He said this week's game will be officiated by a WAC crew, and that UNLV will seek an interpretation in advance on what will be allowed.
He also said his team performed the haka two years ago, but it was scrapped because some players were not as enthusiastic as others.

* * *

Remember Jim Cochran, UH's former recruiting coordinator/assistant coach under Bob Wagner? (By the way, what a great idea by Wagner to have a full-time recruiting coordinator.)
Cochran is now one of two national college scouts for the J-E-T-S ... Jets! Jets! Jets! (Sorry, got carried away there.) He spent yesterday watching practice and studying videotapes. He said everybody is impressed with Colt Brennan, and that Jason Rivers, Hercules Satele, Michael Lafaele, Karl Noa, Amani Purcell and Jacob Patek also are drawing strong interest.
Scouts are not supposed to be checking out underclassmen, but "hypothetically" Adam Leonard, Davone Bess and Ryan Grice-Mullins have been impressive.

Jason is our youngest regular poster, yet one of our wisest and most mature.
His vocabulary is a mix of biting wit and kind words.
Most of all, he is our student rep, the voice — and a clear one, at that — of Every Fan.
And he's a very good singer, too.
Please meet Jason:

Aloha k?kou,

One of the hardest things you can ask a person to do is write about himself, so hopefully this sounds coherent. My name is Jason, although my friends and family also call me Jase. I am a 20-year-old mathematics major taking classes at the University of Hawai‘i at M?noa. I'm not good at any of the traditional sports like football or baseball, so when I was in high school (Moanalua class of 2005!), I was, of course, a mathlete. Don't knock it until you've tried it; competing in O‘ahu Mathematics League and Hawai‘i State Math Bowl competitions allowed me to get those competitive juices flowing and learn things like responsibility, leadership, time management, and being a member of a team, just like any athlete participating in a more physical sport. I'm looking into teaching high school math in the future, and if possible, I'd love to follow in the footsteps of those that came before me, and become a coach myself.

My Dad passed away two years ago, so it's just me and my Mom here in our Salt Lake apartment; I also have a sister, who lives in Mililani with her husband and three girls. The only other thing about my personal life that you really need to know about is the journey that led me back to God. I grew up in a Christian family, but my Dad stopped attending sometime in the 1990s because of bad health; that gave me the perfect excuse to stay home to be with him (and to watch football on television as well). For about ten years, even after my Dad died, I refused to go back, but then something happened last year that made me return.

My youngest niece was born on the afternoon of June 6, 2006; at 2:00 in the morning that day, though, I was sitting in the lobby of Kaiser Permanente's emergency room. I woke up in the middle of the night with sore legs, since I had spent the night before with friends walking around Waik?k?. I took a pain reliever, then tried to go back to sleep—only I couldn't. I started to feel cold, and I couldn't stop shaking. My heart started beating out of my chest, and it felt like it couldn't go any faster without exploding. All I could think was that I was dying. They never did see me at the ER since they were busy that night, but that event still bothered me quite a bit. Over the next few weeks, I made several trips to the emergency room as these symptoms came back, but every time the EKGs and the X-rays came back negative for anything noteworthy. I was eventually diagnosed with panic disorder, which is a type of anxiety disorder.

More importantly was one visit to the ER that was memorable. It was the night following Father's Day; that morning, my Mom tried to wake me up early so she could take me to church, but I refused because I wanted to sleep in. That night at the ER, while talking to her on the phone (she was working late), she told me, "It's because you didn't go to church this morning!" And all of a sudden, I felt it in my heart—the undeniable truth that she was right. We found a church with a sign outside that advertised Wednesday prayer services, which we attended. I've been a member of the Honolulu Bible Fellowship ever since, and a happy one at that. I can't explain to you all how much God has meant to my life in this past year. I'm not a perfect person, but I am a growing person, and that might be the best testimony any person can have.

If you're in the Salt Lake area and you want a church to attend on Sundays or Wednesdays, you're welcome to join me and the HBF. We're a small, predominantly Filipino congregation (we all speak English!) that rents a few small rooms from the good people of the First Southern Baptist Church of Pearl Harbor (http://www.fsbcph.org/). Feel free to stop in on Sunday mornings at 9:00, Sunday evenings at 6:30, and Wednesday evenings at 7:00; just look for the door with the "Honolulu Bible Fellowship" sign next to it (near the handicap parking stall, which you'll see as soon as you enter the driveway).

Now, on to the topic of UH sports, which is why we're all here today. My earliest memories as a young fan include A.C. and Alika leading the basketball team over #2 Kansas in the Rainbow Classic, Jamie Aloy playing first base and pitching for the baseball 'Bows, and Jeff Ulbrich coming back from injury to play the season finale against Michigan. My first UH football game was the 1999 O‘ahu Bowl with my Dad, with free tickets I won for good grades or something. I was there to see Tim Chang break Ty Detmer's all-time passing yardage record (I remember it was a rainy night; my sister and her friend stole my jacket!), and I've been to every football home game since becoming a student at UH (except for this year's season opener against Northern Colorado—my sister's friend, the jacket thief, she got married that afternoon).

It's been a great blessing to have met many of you this past year, my fellow members of The Warrior Beat ‘ohana. I hope my Warrior Beat Web site (http://www.deep-mirrors.org/jason/tsai/) has been of use to many of you. Please be sure to check it out sometimes; I try to put some useful information up there.

what's the story about Dooley talking smack to Bess? is that confirmed? if it is true, no class....and the Haka thing...according to Dooley he asked for clarification, almost like it was premeditated to have his team on the field, knowing all well what UH was doing on the far side of the field facing OUR FANS.....

oh well, we'll take the ugly loss over the pretty win, and may Dooley have many sleepless nights over his call to go for the 2 pt conversion.....

Morning, bulla. Couldn't sleep as the kids woke me up :) Gotta get ready for work anyway.

Stephen, I got an idea. Once the revised haka is ready to be performed by the team, why don't you have Princess Leila record a few of them performing it and put it up on the website as a tutorial for the fans to learn. This would make JJ's vision a reality and give all the fans around the world a chance to learn the dance!!!!!

I was thinking that the haka may be too complicated (words and movements) to coordinate on such a mass level.
But does anyone else recall back in the early 70's the Samoan pre-game chant that was first done by the Farrington football teams? ("JAWS Defense!!!)
That one grew to be so popular that several schools picked it up and was done in the stands at the old Termite Palace regularly.
Simple yet effective.

Wow, that would be awesome to have the entire stadium do the chant in unison. Guarenteed chicken skin moment to have a sold out crowd do it at the Boise St. and Washington games on national TV. Great idea to start now so we all can get it down pat by the end of the season.

Maybe the words could also be posted on the UH athletic website or in the Advertiser and even distributed in flyers so that people can learn and practice ahead of time before getting to the games...

ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Jason, thank you for sharing your bio. Having met you, I see that your maturity exceeds your chronological age. I wish my son can have a more mature attitude, but he is weak in math, his coefficient of the life variable is not a constant as yours is with your beliefs and values. With him, life is a video game that is addictive in geometric progression.

Great to hear that Sunland's suggestion for a fan participation haka is making its way to the Warrior team. Now if we can get the cheer squad to help out along with the band's drummers. The idea of a wireless mike is great. Then fans can repeat the words as the jumbotron displays it! I think this is going to be better than the Wave!

Bulla, I caught the bit about Salt Lake and the flora and fauna that you remembered. Did you ever hear or see aku in Salt Lake? My Dad mentioned to me that once upon a time, there was aku in Salt Lake and people would fish for them. Apparently, there is a channel underground that goes to the ocean hence the Salt designation. Don't know whether this is true or not. Could be a typical "Fish Story".

My impressions of Calvin upon meeting him: He's tall and skinny for a Tsaiko.

Wasn't the Oregon State game a green-out? That looked just awful. I like white-outs, don't like the green-outs and black-outs.

Since I'm your "student rep," I'll bring this up again: Fridays at UH are "Think Green, Wear Green" Fridays, where you're supposed to wear green to show your school spirit. I have a plethora of Mānoa Maniacs shirts, so that's my traditional dress every Friday. I'm getting lunch last week, and the nice lady at Chow Mein Express tells me, "I like your green shirt, is it a special day?" I told her, "It's supposed to be." Yeah, not many dress in green.

perfect remedy for the cold: hot/sour soup, or oxtail soup,or portuguese bean soup w/sweet bread, or a bottle of silver Patron.
I can't take any cold medicines because the stuff can trigger anxiety attacks, but what my Mom makes for me is a ginger-lemon tea, it tastes great and my throat feels real good afterwards. She's out getting more ginger and lemon today, because I'm coming down with that cold.

reat bio jason! really well-written. you sure you don't want to be an english major? you can assign your students to learn the words to co-ed :)
Haha! I have a good friend in Texas now that's studying Elementary Ed, but she's going to study English later on. I think between her and Mike, the future for English students is safe.

And who says I can't assign the kids to learn Co-Ed anyways? Make them study the timing of the notes or something, that's math. :-D

With him, life is a video game that is addictive in geometric progression.
My nieces are the same way, they think everything is a game. IDK, my parents are older, and they grew up during World War II and the Korean War. I guess my sister and I were raised differently, I'd like to say we turned out alright. Eh, they're good girls, I think they'll be okay once they grow up.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. Kinda shame, having to post a bio, but the message was important to get out there.

Game story about UNLV's near-win over Wisconsin from the Las Vegas Review Journal.
Their coach said a lot of the same things as Dooley said after the UH game.

UNLV led by one point until Badgers quarterback Tyler Donovan made a remarkable 29-yard touchdown run around left end with 1:53 left. The ensuing 2-point conversion gave the Badgers a 20-13 victory before a sellout crowd of 38,250.

"I don't believe in moral victories. I believed we were going to win that football game, and we should've won that football game," said UNLV Mike Sanford, whose team was a 26 1/2-point underdog. "I believe our team played with tremendous heart, played with tremendous determination, tremendous belief, tremendous effort.

"But it wasn't enough, and we've got to find a way to win those kind of games."

It also would have sent a message that UNLV, which hosts No. 20 Hawaii next Saturday, might be working toward better days. The Rebels won only six games over the three seasons before this one.

But coming this close to Wisconsin (2-0) might start the process of moving forward.

"We had it," said senior linebacker Beau Bell, who led UNLV in tackles with 10 and had a sack. "Defense should've stepped it up at the end and made that stop."

The Rebels stayed in the game thanks largely to a defense that was outstanding for the second week in a row. After holding Utah State to 234 yards in the opener, UNLV limited the Badgers to 348 yards, though tailback P.J. Hill rushed for 147 yards on 30 carries.

UNLV redshirt freshman quarterback Travis Dixon completed 23 of 36 passes for 258 yards with a touchdown, but he also had a costly interception that led to a Wisconsin field goal.

Rebels wide receiver Casey Flair caught 10 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown.

"He's got some shiftiness to him," Badgers coach Bret Bielema said of Dixon. "He can create something out of nothing. Any time you have that ability, you can change a game."

Wisconsin had the "Worlds Largest Tailgate Party" before their game with UNLV on Saturday, with 15,000 Wisconsin supporters there. I thought that UH was going to have a lot of supporters at UNLV, but Wisconsin might have had even more last week!

This wasn't the first time Wisconsin had fired up its collective grill in Las Vegas. But none of the previous official pregame tailgate parties had attracted a crowd like this one. It seemed all of Madison and half of Milwaukee were there, and if you thought it impossible to pronounce the names of all those little towns named for American Indians that were represented, you should have tried counting them.

On Saturday, the Werners and about 15,000 of their closest friends had to settle for a bratwurst or two ¦ or three ¦ or three dozen, courtesy of Port-A-Pit Catering of Tucson

The 65-foot - long, 54,000-pound Johnsonville Big Taste Grill can turn out 2,500 BPH - brats per hour - and Murawski might have panicked when he learned it had been ruled ineligible for this trip.

Not to worry. The Port-A-Pit grilled more than 4,000 brats an hour, thus making it the Ron Dayne of mobile grills.

Jason has the "Mathalete" blog title, as I only did the Math League a few times and only did the Math Bowl once. His goal to be a high school math teacher is a worthy one, and Hawaii's schools need good math teachers like I believe he will be. I know of a number of high schools where it is hard to find a teacher who wants to coach Math League, so I'm glad that Jason wants to do that too.

Ah but it's always good to know that you have been and are appreciated. When I left the company I worked for in Japan, everyone lined up at the door and bowed me a farewell. I was so touched.

But then again, when I left Granada, Spain in '84, all the Japanese that were living there showed up at the train station to bow me a farewell, too. Maybe it's just tradition. Oh well. Another bubble burst.

The Las Vegas Sun has an article about UH, lots of interesting stuff in it:

Last week when UNLV went face mask to face mask for four quarters against then-No. 5 Wisconsin, UNLV got a look at what a national championship contender is supposed to look like - at least if you go by the polls.

At 6:30 p.m. this Saturday, the Rebels will get up close and personal with a potential Heisman Trophy winner.

Colt Brennan just might be the biggest thing to hit Hawaii since Detective Steve McGarrett and macadamia nuts. He passed for more than three miles as a junior last year and finished sixth in the Heisman balloting.
Permalink 09/11/07 @ 09:13
I didn't remember that Colt had probably his worst statistical game vs. UNLV last year. I wonder if that is extra motivation for him this year...
Heisman prospects
COLT BRENNAN

Is Brennan the real deal or just a product of coach June Jones ' high-octane system? He threw 58 TD passes last year - one of 18 NCAA records he holds. If his first two games are any indication, he could get 70 TD passes this season. He had six against Northern Colorado and four at Louisiana Tech.

Take heart Rebel fans: His worst game last year came against UNLV, when he threw for only 296 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Permalink 09/11/07 @ 09:15
Here's a list of things I learned about Brennan by watching "A Colt Following," a DVD extolling his Heisman Trophy qualifications.

A lot of big guys in floral print shirts think he's pretty darn special.

He still doesn't get the respect he deserves because, like Timmy Chang before him, he has been labeled a "system quarterback."

"Chang has knocked around with several teams in several leagues and, at the moment he's a stand-in, I believe, for quarterback Matt Saracen on 'Friday Night Lights,' " syndicated columnist Norman Chad wrote last week. (Chad, incidentally, predicts Brennan will win the Heisman.)

Hey everybody,

Saw Stephen at the La Tech game and he said I needed to post at least once a day.

Well, I might not be able to do that, but here's a little story from the La Tech game.

We had a great time in Louisana. Hope you got to watch the game...if not here's some highlights......Patek Highlights. Everyone knows we won 45-44 in overtime. Seems like it went that way for a lot of college teams yesterday. (overtime)

We got to Ruston, LA around 2 pm and set up our tailgate. There were about 100 hawaii fans tailgating. We were at least 31 of those. We met some more families of players and lots of die hard hawaii fans. It was hot, hot, hot and muggy. That part I didn't like.

Liz Chun from the une Jones show in hawaii wanted to interview Gary(213), but he was watching the pregame and so she got me. It was so unfair. The hottest day on the earth, at least for me, and I don't do heat well. May family took care of me and gave me a lei to wear, although they couldn't do anything about my hair :( Anyway she'll probably decide not to use it because i looked so bad. I'll chalk it up to a lesson in (humididty)humility.

Jacob said he didn't have the right mind set either. He was a little excited. His coach told him before the came that several scouts had called asking about him. It made him a little nervous and gave him more adrenaline than he needed.

My version of the last play of the game. I was exhausted and needed some water. We had already scored in overtime. I went to get something to drink and to pray. I was talking to God and telling him the team needed His help to pull this one out. I know everyone else was prayin too. While I was underneath the bleachers La Tech made their touchdown during overtime. I heard the announcer say they were going for the two point conversion and then a big roar errupted. I thought they made it, thinking they must have run it to the opposite side of Jacob. I was like, well Lord I hadn't said all I wanted to say to you and I guess it's over. You must have an awesome learning lesson for all of us.

I waited and waited for family to meet me underneath the bleachers.....and they weren't coming. I knew where the boys were going to come out of the dressing room so I was walking over there. A sweet lady came up to me and ask were I was from. I told her Texas and she commented about how many their were of us etc. Finally I said, well I wish we would have won the game and she stopped and looked at me and said we did!!! I said are you sure? and she told me what happened. I couldn't believe it!

I found all the family talking with Jacob on the field. I found out he helped influence the the winning play of the game.

Must run. We are in Houston, leaving for Las Vegas tomorrow.

Stephen we are in the Hotel Lobby waiting for Jacob. Come and see us before we leave.

Hey Liz, if you are in Houston come down to the lobby. I clean up real well and we can do that interview again. :)

Bye for now....Go Warriors!

Not sure if Garret did this yet.

Let Hawaii Haka!
When Hawaii (32) did its pregame haka (a Maori war chant) at Louisiana Tech (33) on Saturday, the result was a 15-yard flag for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Warriors had to open the game kicking off from their own 15-yard line.

Not surprisingly, June Jones (34) was displeased.

"For someone to micromanage outside the NCAA rules, that's not right," Jones told the Honolulu Advertiser.

As the paper pointed out, "The NCAA has rules against unsportsmanlike conduct, but none specifically mentions the haka …" And The Dash thought the NCAA had a rule for everything.

Hawaii began doing the haka before games last season as a "cultural thing," according to its players and coaches. The WAC office received at least one complaint that the haka was done to provoke or intimidate opponents, so the league sent out a notice "encouraging teams not to perform the haka during road games," the Advertiser said. (You think they were talking to Hawaii? Or perhaps Idaho?)

The Dash is all for pregame pageantry and color. As long as the Warriors aren't starting any fights, let them take their haka on the road.

Beowulf (Mrs. Patek),

Thank you so much for posting your story! I watched the game and thought that Jacob played an excellent game--he was flying all over the place and hitting and tackling well (especially in the 2nd half). Maybe he might not have been up to his (extremely) high standards, but I don't think he had a bad game.

I'm glad to hear that the scounts are asking about Jacob! His character, his hitting, his reliability, should give him a shot at the next level. UH sent a lot of Warriors to the NFL this year and I hope Jacob is among those for next year!

And another thing, when I was going to school in Waipahu not one Filipino male spoke their native language in a low voice. It was all an octave or two higher than normal.

What is funny to me is that my boy at UH is taking Tagalog and my youngest daughter joined the Filipino club at her high school. But good for them, at least (I hope) they learn something about their roots.

The Titans traded for a DE, so that probably means that Travis LaBoy will be getting little or no playing time the rest of the season unless someone got hurt. It is too bad because Travis got a sack in the Titans only regular season game so far. Maybe if he continues to do well he can get a specialty pass-rushing role.

Fisher, benched by Seattle after starting for two seasons, was traded to Tennessee on Tuesday. Fisher, a seven-year veteran, had been replaced with the faster Darryl Tapp, the Seahawks' second-round draft choice in 2006.

"He has a lot of the attributes that you look for in a base defensive end - someone who plays the run, has the ability to rush the passer and can play either side," said Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt. "I expect him to fit well in our system and add to the depth that we are building in the defensive line."

Fisher is the second Seattle player the Titans have added since June under Reinfeldt, who joined Tennessee after working as a player personnel executive with the Seahawks. The Titans picked up cornerback Kelly Herndon in June after he was cut by Seattle.

The Titans have been looking to add depth at defensive end to help Kyle Vanden Bosch. Antwan Odom and Travis LaBoy have struggled with injuries their first three seasons.

"He understands the business of pro football," agent Peter Schaffer said of the former Air Force officer and graduate of the Air Force Academy. "He's excited about this next chapter in his career, and he has fond memories of the greatest period of his NFL career, which included starting in the Super Bowl."

Great minds think alike.

Ok guys that does it for me, that made my day, I'm taking the rest of the day off from work!

Rage,

Good article stating what many believe.

Let ALL teams carry out their pre game rituals.

It's the little "extras" and pagentry that helps get fans to the games.

The Warriors should STOP worrying about the Haka and start worrying about playing some DEFENSE!?

Maybe all that time wasted on practicing the Haka can be used to work on your TACKLING.

And having the fans do the Haka is most ridiculous thing I've heard today. Especially when half the fans at UH are senior citizens! HAHA!

It won't be 35,000 fans. It'll be more like 500 fans! There's no one there during pre-game -- when UH does the Haka.

Yah Homey, Believe it or not.

Once you cross the bridge turn left instead of right. It is on that side. You need to go past some houses and you will find a pig farm and a large area where they have parties. it is called "Yama's Royal Ranch"

Off topic, in Detroit I thought I saw someone doing Tai Chi in the streets, but upon closer inspection it was just a heroin addict trying to keep from falling over.

I agree with you about the Haka and old people too. Tell them bon dance in place and stick out thier tounges...

Calvin,

When it became news that the Warriors were crafting a more "Hawaiian War Chant and dance" to "replace" the haka this year, me and my friends had some fun with it and wondered what it would be like for the Warriors to come out dressed in a white dress shirt, a purple sash, black dress pants and bare feet walking out with hands at the hip like a Hula Halau.

Dooley marches over and is obviously verbalizing something to Bess. It looked like Bess kept his cool, made a comment right back (with a I'm not going to let you get to me demeanor) and jogged back to the huddle.

Fine point as well, and of course I never forgot about that.

For me personally, I have been more of a fan of the defensive side of all sports as frustrating the opposition's offensive attack seems more satisfying to me than scoring.

I don't expect for the D to be at 110% perfect come this Saturday, but if they can continue with the improvements they made towards the end of the LaTech contest then we should be fine.

I agree, Kazz.

Problem with last week was that those turnovers kept the defense in there longer than they should have been and the no huddle offense of LaTech didn't give them enough time to catch their breaths. AND, once you lose your breath, it's hard to get back to 100%.

From the moment they opted to receive the kickoff, that was apparently one of their main goals. It almost sank us too.

I don't think UNLV has the personnel to imitate what LaTech did, though.

I've heard so much about this already.

People say we have to run teams into the ground every game for the voters to take notice.

People say that it wouldn't matter.

People say a win is a win. Regardless if it's 100 points or 1.

But then does the voting backtrack?

Meaning if LaTech goes to CAL and pushes them to the limit like they did with us, will we rise in the rankings provided we get a clear victory over UNLV, a team that gave #5 Wisconsin some rubs?

So Gigi, no worries, nobody in Samoa gets the joke here today either...good curtains are hard to come by. But we are all rolling here at the American Samoa Maliu Mai Beach Resort over the imagery of Bachan sticking out her tongue pre-game! I will tell you a Samoan true story kine joke from Saturday, we didn't have time for on the radio this morning, that Frank Delima can embellish. Local American Samoa high school team, Marist Crusader's, QB is getting severely pass rushed by the Fagaitua Vikings d-line, so he dumps it near an o-lineman. A Marist Crusader young assistant coach shouts to the QB, "Hey you can't throw it to a lineman!" Then and only then, because of the young assistants outburst, did the referee turn to the sideline and say, "Thanks" then threw the yellow penalty flag. The Head Coach went off on that young assistant big time. It was a Samoan babooze kine moment, like I never saw in all my years here.

In defense of Rich2176

Having met Rich and talked on the phone several times, I have formulated a concise opinion of this gentleman.

First of all, Rich lives and works among the Hollywood elite, the movers and shakers of the movie and television world.
In spite of his lofty social position in life, Rich still manages to be a "normal" guy.
He rarely utilizes his fleet of limousines, he keeps a low profile by being a average guy and choosing to drive himself in his Ferrari or Maybach.
In keeping with the Hollywood ideal of a slim, youthful look, Rich only joins Rosie O'Donnel once a week for eating contests and shares Phyllis Dillers Botox tech.

He is known as a generous employer as he occasionally pays his garderner before calling the INS.
His Pinay maid Esmerelda, gets 3 bathroom breaks a day and all the Mr.Pibb she can drink.
Rich hardly beats his servants, except once when his driver, a Mr R.King missed a stop at Dunkin' Donuts.
Luckily the LA cops took the heat when someone videotaped them helpling Mr. King stand up.

More on Rich later

Izzy, maybe if UH were to offer a trip to Vegas for those that can perform the haka the best, maybe we'll see some initative?

But then again that's not really initiative, more like an incentive, thus eliminating any kind of genuine UH spirit huh?

At this point if we can see the entire student section and maybe 500 more people in the stadium doing it then that should be considered a success.

Other than that too many people are pre-occupied with calling their cell phones during a live game trying to find out if their teams made the spread earlier in the day... (grrrrr...)

Here in Samoa got this great news for the UH Warriors Football Team. The Ultimate Graduate Assistant, Brian Kajiyama, sent the following note to me, "I'm not on the road, but I'll travel on my own with my family to Vegas next Thursday to attend the UNLV game." I personally think the sight of Brian will fire up the boys...a buddy from home is sure a great thing to pep you up on a long difficult road trip. Brian might have with him a new accessory Lafu's family gave him for his hot rod...its a classy national symbol that will certainly surprise the Samoan players.

Before you can get the fans into the haka, you will need to get some of the pepsquad into it. Come up with a simplified version with chanter, a card holder, and an instructor.

The Card Holder holds up EVEN.. ODD.. EVERYONE.. cards. The Chanter yells out the line. The Instructor repets the chant and goes through the movement. The Chanter and Instructor then go through it with the fans.

You need to Ballroom at PCC but here are somethings to do add to your dancing while at that venue.

In the middle of your FoxTrot you need to bust out the Poi Balls and do a little number.

Yesterday I was buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for Athena, the wonder dog, at Wal-Mart, and was about to check out.

A woman behind me asked if I had a dog. On impulse, I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, and that I was starting the Purina Diet again. Although I probably shouldn't, because I'd ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pants pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry and that the food is nutritionally complete so I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was by now enthralled with my story.)

Horrified , she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me.

I told her no; I stepped off a curb to sniff an Irish Setter's ass and a car hit us both.

Gigi: Wouldn't that be another reason to call him "the Face?"

Kazz: I know what you mean. Having been born and raised in Hawai'i, I can say that: 1-I never REALLY appreciated the place until I left; 2-My Warrior Spirit/Pride (call it what you will), didn't "materialize" (i.e., I didn't consider myself a "fan") until I was away for several years. 3-And I was in the band!

Is this something that happens only in Hawai'i? It's difficult to say. I think it's something more; other more established sports programs, are instilled in everyone (in that State) from "birth," if you will. Hawai'i's traditions are still being made. There is a growing number of citizens of the "Warrior Nation" each year and as those fans get into influential positions across the NCAA (it is afterall, a business like any other business), the Uinversity of Hawai'i "Legend" will grow (I hope) in a positive direction.

We've already got Pro Scouts looking at many of our starters (senior and underclassmen). I think is was ST's post eariler today that said that. Too bad, they can't or won't come out in the open about that fact.

I may come off as just a crotchety-old-man at times, but I KNOW there will come a day when NOT knowing Co Ed will be as embarrassing as knowing it is today.

I may be wrong but I think one theory is the Hawaiians are originally Maori. This would then mean that a Maori "Haka" could also be a Hawaiian one.

Great minds think alike.

I think it would be awesome if we can somehow get all the fans to wear the same color to home football games without having to tell them to wear the same color.... you know, like all of the rest of the programs in the country.

As the new era of 49ers players rested up to play in Monday night’s game against the Cardinals, some of the former players who enjoyed the 49ers storied success congregated at A.P. Stumps restaurant in San Jose for ESPN’s Chalk Talk Luncheon Series.

49ers alumni players Steve Bono, Guy McIntyre, Gary Plummer, Jerry Rice, Jesse Sapolu, and Keena Turner attended the afternoon event which ESPN put together in hopes of helping build excitement for each week’s MNF game throughout the 2007 season.

I'm very happy that Everett will walk again according to his doctor...the same doc who said yesterday that he'd be paralyzed.
Kevin Everett voluntarily moved his arms and legs on Tuesday when partially awakened, prompting a neurosurgeon to say the Buffalo Bills' tight end would walk again — contrary to the grim prognosis given a day before.

"Based on our experience, the fact that he's moving so well, so early after such a catastrophic injury means he will walk again," said Dr. Barth Green, chairman of the department of neurological surgery at the University of Miami school of medicine.

"It's totally spectacular, totally unexpected," Green told The Associated Press by telephone from Miami.

Not only will the Titans' trade for a DE cost Travis LaBoy a lot of playing time, the Titans cut Jesse Mahelona to make room on the roster for the new DE.

In a trade that helped cleared space for a quarterback and impacted the careers of Hawaii athletes, Seattle dealt benched defensive end Bryce Fisher to Tennessee today.
Tennessee made room for the Fisher by releasing defensive tackle former Kealakehe athlete Jesse Mahelona, a fifth-round pick out of Tennessee in 2006.

The Titans have been looking to add depth at defensive end to help Kyle Vanden Bosch. Antwan Odom and former University of Hawaii star Travis LaBoy have struggled with injuries their first three seasons.

It is true that Hawaiians and Maori are all Polynesian but still..it's kind of a stretch ah? I guess you could compare it to if the University of New Zealand danced the hula before opening games instead of their own traditional Haka...it would just be kind of strange, especially when a culture like the Hawaiian culture is known throughout the world for its own special dances, rituals, chants, etc.. Does UH have any players from New Zealand? Any Maori? I know we have some from Samoa and Tonga.

DPK, I simply have no choice to come home immediately as there is no room on the flights. Lots of South Pacific Games participants are headed home to Hawaii, and no one can control the medical evacuations that obviously take precedence over everything and everybody. So, I have to just go with the flow, try to check in for every flight, and get updates from you my dear Tsaiko pals. If you or any Tsaiko's go watch Punahou get creamed by Kamehameha, could you please get my son one of those Chinatown Maunakea St. $3 leis and tell him its from his dad. Every game means alot to my son as he was injured last year. He only has a few chances to show his worthiness to colleges who have expressed an interest. Ironically, and its really ironic, the only reason I am here is to help American Samaon kids get more exposure from these past weekend games, thru my video and stills, to help them get college scholarship opportunities. I am working, gratis, to supply Scout.com and PIAA with imagery, data, and video to help promote these kids. So as you would quote, o' learned DPK, from classical literature of Prometheus giving fire to mankind, "What was thy pity's recompense?" But the great thing is my son is a smart caring kid who thanked me in an e-mail yesterday for helping his Samoan brothers, even though I will probably miss a special time in his life. Yeah, I cried out of being proud of his young maturity and positive attitude. Oh well, I guess my son can always try to be a UH Warrior, and I can see him at home all the time, eh?

All polynesians are related. UH is working on a Hawaiian version of a war chant/dance for the Warriors. I'm waiting to see what that looks like before I comment on the haka issue any more. Good quetion though. UH has had players of Maori ancestry before.

Brooke,
I was just playing. Too much seriousness over the Haka. UH was working on something new but went back to the Haka because too many players weren't catching on to the new dance. Anyway, the Haka is just a pre-game pump up for the team. They don't face the other team and gesture towards them so who cares.

Oh, I meant Maori people and culture is what came over on canoes and populated Hawaii. So to say "are there any Maori's on UH's team?" Well, yes, but since we grew up in Hawaii, we call ourselves Hawaiians among several other names for our culture. So based on that, Maori's(who are now Hawaiians) should be able to do a Haka that was a traditional dance of the Hawaiian people before they moved to Hawaii and the Hula was developed.

We still do not know what was said to Bess. Apprently, though it was pretty crude or Bess would not have said anything.

Question for Benson. If what Bess says Dooley allegedly said is correct (there are witnesses) should there have been a 15-yard unsportsman-like penalty (intimidating and threatening, not to mention degrading) right at that moment? Or were the officials directed to penalize only Hawai'i if they intimidated, threatened, etc?

Or, was Dooley sharp enough to wait until the officials were not present?

I've seen snippets of the beginning of the new "War Chant" by the Warriors and from the first few seconds of it, it looks just as intense as any haka.

I can't wait to see it unveiled.

On a side note, while going through some haka clips of sports teams across the globe I have to say that my favorite was when The All Blacks faced a rugby team from Tonga and while the All Blacks were performing "Ka Mate" prior to the test, the Tongan team bust out in their pre game ritual war dance, the crowd went insane as both teams were laying down the challenge to each other in their own respective ways.

Both teams stood facing each other through all of this, both displaying their respective pride of who they are and what they represented.

It was intense and beautiful in a way. No obscene gestures afterwards. When the pre game was over several members of both teams pointed and nodded at each other as if to say, "ok, I gotcha ya, game on!" in a very respectful way towards the other.

Now where am I going with all of this?

I don't think I need to elaborate, but these are the things that we're missing out on with all these handcuffs and gummi-bear politics on what a team can or can't do.

True you will have some immature players that will take it too far, but what Karl Benson is displaying is a simple lack of faith he has with the fans and players in the WAC.

Sure he has to answer to a lot of people and a lot of people also don't have a lot of faith in the players and other fans that they will be able to control themselves, but I'm just saying...

I'm totally with you on this whole Haka ting. Must have been chickenskin when those two teams faced off. It always was traditional for all polynesien cultures to do the Haka or the equivalent, when other Islanders landed on their shores. The purpose was to "feel out" the others, to test their mettle and to let them know,"don't mess with us". It also served as a somewhat cautionary greeting. Well, at least that's what I've learned, correct me if I'm wrong.

In any case, this whole political correctness balony is going on my nerves big time. It's trying to squash all uniqueness out of everything. Baah, Humbug!!

Pomai - I think you should add #10 Jake Locker, Freshman QB from UDub to your "watch list". He might be in top 10 this year, and higher in future years. IMHO.
BTW - Mahalo for your nice website and all the postings you do.

Thanks Brew, I will add him. Also I have decided that this will be our own watch list an Heisman vote, so help out and let me know if there should be someone on here that deserves to be, I hope it can really be a true Heisman rather than what they have now which is nothing more than a BCS popularity contest.

Also would like suggestion on what kind info to add for each player??? Or anything else.

If UH was less of a “commuter campus” and had the tradition of a pregame prep-rally on Friday nights – a student body “Haka” would be awesome – and would be ripe to spillover to game day at the stadium.

So – how about a Prep-rally/Haka! It could even start at Richardson Field! Mr. Kazz – you wouldn’t have to do your “solo” haka. You should see if the UH Cheerleader Squad, SportsHawaii guys, press corp, etc. would attend! You could aim for the NMSU game 10/27 – good practice for Holloween too! ;-)

FloridaTed,

What I was thinking was that it was going to be covered as a novelty piece, kinda like those special interest piecies one would see on the news.

I can probably just assume that they would make no mention of the game and make no mention of the fact that two of the most high powered offenses in the country (UH and NMSU) faced off against each other.

I think those worries might be justified? But I guess to some college football know-it-alls out there, asking for more coverage than that would be like "beggars being choosers" huh?

Solo haka? Kinda eliminates the purpose huh? LOL.

Although we had the likes of Diesel, Bulla and DA BEAST, and WreckinEyez and his peeps at the first TSAIKOGATE and to have these folks doing the haka would of been a sight!

When Princess Leila showed up with a camera crew at the end I kind of thinking to myself "OH S**T" as some here were calling out for a HA camera crew to videotape what we joked about as the BLOG HAKA.. But thankfully that wasn't the case.

He said 35,000 people performng the haka "would be awesome

Oh I can't believe I forgot to mention this but I believe the Guiness Book of World Records states that the largest group of people to perform a haka all at once was 10,000 in Syndey, Australia.

I believe that took a few weeks to pull of successfully... So...

Hello Everyone,

At work right now! Pretty exhausted from the game today. Unfortunately the undefeated season is no more for our team.

Our defense didn't come to play today and gave up a lot of yards on the ground and (2) 4th and goal passes to their 6'5 TE and 6’3 WR! My DB’s are pushing 5’9 lol!

I played well throwing for around 275 yards with an estimated 45 on the ground (Official Stats come out later this week). 3 TD Passes 1 rushing TD on the ground and 2 INT's.

One of the INT’s was a “Hail Mary” at the end of the game! Final score 43-35!!! Can barely walk right now after taking a few shots :(.

But nothing too bad. Just happy I gave it my all out there. Got to keep the troops motivated after the loss. Our next game is Tuesday!

Kazz, having covered Rugby Union, Rugby 7's for 3 decades...at the Hong Kong 7's Rugby Tournament, I once saw the NZ 7's Natl. Rugby Team (technically not called the All Blacks, but some of the team also play on the All Blacks too) begin the Haka, when the Fiji National 7's team began their Haka face to face, within inches of each others noses. It was bloody intense, Mate. I actually shot it and have it in my film, not digital archives. Also just this past Saurday, at the closing ceremony of the South Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa...French Polynesia, aka Tahiti, performed a Tahitian style Haka in the closing ceremonies. So I guess I am in Ground Zero Haka land, and nobody understands here the problem is. Around the Vailima Beer bottles they think that Karl Benson and La Tech are a bunch of wimps that ought to worry more about stopping Colt Brennan than the Haka.

When you line Samoans up against their cousins the Tongans, in any competitive sport or event, things always get intense. This is what happened when the All Blacks lined up against the Tongan team. The rivalry between these two groups always produces great matches/games. Visit Kapiolani Park to witness a rugby match. You'll see what I mean.

All Black captain Tana Umaga, of Samoan descent, is probably the greatest All Black of all time.

As regards the Haka. Samoans and Tongans are not big on posturing and screaming before a battle. Go visit the Bishop Museum and check on the war clubs from each of the Polynesian groups stored there. You will quickly see that Samoan battle instruments, like Tongan battle instruments, were constructed for one purpose only; whereas, if you look at purported "weapons" from the other Polynesian groups, you will see these "weapons" are more ornamental, ceremonial - easy smashed, cut in half, or broken into little pieces by Samoan or Tongan war clubs. These "weapons" would not be able to withstand a direct hit from a Samoan or Tongan war club.

(17:27) I think ESPN would cover it well and give it a lot of airtime. To truly understand our Island culture, one would have to be born here or live here for a long time, being immersed in the culture. In other words , have Hawaii or Polynesia either in the blood or in the heart. But it would still be great exposure for our program and the WAC. Some may make fun of it, but inside they would be jealous, nothng else would compare with that. Just imagine, two WAC schools facing off with the Haka. It also would put our imprint on the WAC.

Ronnie,

I've seen my fair share of Warriors games over the years but when it truly started was back in Colt's sophomore season versus USC. I watched the Bowl game the previous season when Chang went out as a Senior and loved the players enthusiasm and passion for the game.

So I wanted to start rooting for the Warriors the "05" season and knew "06" would be special for Colt and the rest of the players because of the teams potential and the direction the program was headed.

I must admit I also enjoyed watching the Run N Shoot because I was a big Houston Oilers fan when I was younger and also rooted for the Falcons when Jones coached there in 1995.

I think it still can be run in the NFL! Truthfully I was born and breed a Florida State fan by my brother and father but lost interest due to the way the University changed and the way the football program has changed.

I will always be an FSU fan but the way it is to watch a Warriors game has turned me into a diehard. I have falling in love with what this program is about and think the fans our incredible as well.

My time in the Military is ending soon and you only live once so, It’s a no brainier that playing for coach Jones and the U Of Hawaii is the only way togo.

I am not some guy who just thinks I can get up off the coach and play. I have been training since "04" to play after my Military service. Its going to be hard walking-on physically and mentally. And also very very difficult moving my family out to Hawaii.

I have a wife of 3 1/2 years and a 2 year old son! I am ready for the challenge and will make a trip to check out the University in early "08" and hopefully walk-on "08" fall or "09" spring semester! Wish me luck!

Football Fan, you are right...but even at the high school football level of Kahuku Samoans vs. Farrington Samoans... the kindler and gentler save the world, Punahou, has Samoans Iosefa, Iofeta, Teo, Markowitz, Fuimaono, etc. who got extremely intense scrimmaging their Farrington cousins last month. Farrington kids seemed shocked that Punahou has a great Samoan tradition. Samoans play their best in any sport either in front of their relatives or against their relatives. Current Manu Samoa Rugby Coach, Michael Jones, was an All Black, who shifted to play for his homeland's team Manu Samoa for the first ever encounter of the two nations. When Michael got in the middle of things, the All Black Samoans beat his face and head raw. Jones is one of the toughest guys around, and a class act...and would back the UH Warriors on doing whatever kine Haka they want. Please, please, please, I don't want to hear this Maori excuse again, that its all a Maori thing...every island people have their own expression as they enter the field of battle or sports competition. For Samoa, their ritual is called the Siva Tau. For laugh's have the Warriors come out and do the Mexican Hat Dance, just for Commissioner Benson...the Warriors will still win and outperform the other buggahs...did any of you go to the Hawaii Union Builder's All Star Game two years ago? The Haka was forbidden, so one of the teams did the Hokey Pokey to the opposing team pre-game...I definately have that on video.

Two new Titans front office officials, general manager Mike Reinfeldt and director of pro personnel Lake Dawson, came to Tennessee from Seattle this spring and are especially familiar with Fisher.

The Titans have been looking to upgrade behind starters Kyle Vanden Bosch and Antwan Odom.

On another subject, I watched the videos of the planes crashing into the Twin Towers on 9/11 - I never in my life thought I would shed tears for complete strangers who parished in NYC that day, but there I was, tears streaming down my face and hugging my wife as we were preparing to go to work - I was reminded of this as I watched the national news on TV earlier this evening.

It reminded me of all my OCS(Officer Candidate School) classmates who went to Nam in 1966 and returned in a casket - I believe that none of us thought that we would lose over 50 classmates within 9 months after graduation - my graduation year book is filled with black ribbons - I had the honor and privilege of being a pall bearer for my friend when his body was returned to Kentucky for burial - I am sure that it was unsettling for many in attendence seeing me there as the only Asian Officer at the funeral - Civil rights legislation was still a year away - forty-one years have passed, but I still remember and will not forget.

Jason,

Very nice bio. I also lost my father when I was just 18. Lost my way for a few years but eventually found my spirituality again. When you have a strong foundation and belief you will always find your way home.

Take care my friend and God bless you.

Specifically, I was wondering how the NFL scouts watching practice changed anything in the practices. Beowulf talked about how Jake was told about scout's interest, I assume that other players were given such info too...so, with the scouts there I wonder if that is a distraction or more of a motivation.

By the way, I had a nice 70 minute talk with my supervisor this morning, things seem fine with my leaving. Aside from meeting with the people who try to change my mind (one guy went for over an hour), I was told to sit around and wait to be told what they want me to do during my last 2 weeks...my supervisor had to discuss this with the head guy. But we had a ton of customers at my company today so they never got to meet. So, I was just supposed to sit around and do nothing all day I guess.

I've always been a goal-oriented person, and try to accomplish something for work each day. It was weird to do nothing today. I wonder if/when they will ask me to do anything or if I'll just kind of sit around these two weeks...

Computer working better now? Hmmm. Did you know that if you spill something...like maybe BBQ sauce... in your laptop keyboard, you can remove the keyboard without special tools (maybe a small screwdriver) and simply wash in soap and water and dr)? Should work again...for a while anyway. ;-)

Interesting how so many high schools in LA are using the shotgun now...both passing and running teams are using it as their primary formation now.

Dave White, long-time coach at Huntington Beach Edison, said one of his quarterbacks from the 1990s came up to him recently and complained, "How come you didn't use that offense with me?"

"Now the emphasis is on passing," White said. "Back then, we'd throw 10 times a game. Now it's 30 times. The good coaches evolve with the game. When we have a great quarterback, we're going to throw it."

And Edison has a top quarterback this season in UCLA-bound Nick Crissman, who passed for 3,094 yards as a junior primarily out of the shotgun formation.

Garret -

That simple fact that they allowed you to stay and have people talk to you is a compliment, and show of respect. Many companies just restrict/remove site access, escort you offsite, and box up your stuff and send it to your home or just leave it outside for you to recover.

This has been bothering me for a while.
In JJ's offensive scheme, the play is determined by the coverage, the QB and receivers "read" the defensive formation and adjust routes accordingly.

So why does Colt need to go to the sideline after every play?
It must sound like this;
Colt: What's the play?
JJ: Pass

Next play
Colt: What's the play?
JJ: Pass

Next play
Colt: Pass?
JJ: yup

Next play
Colt: Pass
JJ: uh huh

I saw several shovel passes and inside screens in NFL games this week. Also, lots of spread, 4 WR formations, although many have the TE/H-back lined up outside, or in motion. So- JJ is still a leader/innovator as far as Offense play calling.

I don’t see that cameras and binoculars are on the “banned” list for Sam Boyd Stadium. If anyone knows differently, please let me know.
Please be aware of the following:

* Fans entering the facility may be subject to security check by metal detecting hand wands.
* Briefcases and pocketbooks will be allowed in the facility, but will be inspected at all entrance gates.
* Large bags, coolers and large backpacks will not be allowed into the facility.
* Once you have exited the facility, fans will not be allowed to re-enter for any reason.
* There will be an increased security presence both inside and outside the facility.

This type of search is designed to be done as quickly and effectively as possible so as not to slow down the ingress of the crowd. Inappropriate items will include, but not be limited to, coolers, video cameras, food and beverages, laser pens and noise makers.

Brett,

I admire your service to your country and trying to prepare yourself to walk on to a college football team. Moving your family across the country would be hard, but Hawaii isn't a bad place to live...

When you talked about walking on to a team after you got out of the military I immediately thought of one of the players I most admire...Ahmard Hall. His dedication, determination, leadership, and character has made him a force behind Texas and the Titans.

Hall served four years in the Marines (3rd Battalion, 8th Marines out of Camp Lejeune, N.C.), including missions in Kosovo (1999) and Afghanistan (2002) before attending college on the G.I. Bill. Hall’s wife, Juana, also served four years in the Marines.

A former walk-on, Hall was the starting fullback on the 2006 National Championship Texas Longhorns with fellow teammate Vince Young, who nicknamed Hall “The Big Marine.” The nickname stuck, as did Hall’s influence on the field. Initially a member of the scout team offense, by the end of his collegiate career Hall was an active contributor to one of the most potent offenses in the nation.

Although he entered the NFL as a 26-year-old rookie, fullback Ahmard Hall’s experience on and off the football field earned the respect of the locker room and made him a valuable member of the Titans roster. He is a thunderous blocker and a capable runner and receiver. His production is viewed best not by his numbers – Hall totaled seven carries for 21 yards and 15 receptions for 138 yards in his first season – but rather by the success of his teammates.

My Mom will be sitting in section 111...so now I have the dilemma of visiting her and losing time with the Tsaiko section or missing out on seeing her at the game. I'll probably visit her before the game starts, I guess.

At least my family will get to spend Sunday with her...

Thanks A-House. Amidst the hype and excitement, today needed a moment of quiet reflection. It's starting to sound trite because the message has been said so many times and in many ways. But, there needs to be enough of us who remember our special folks who are elsewhere, who make it possible for us to have games on weekends.

We know that gambling -- or at least playing in a fantasy league -- adds a certain intrigue to following pro football.

But are people such action junkies that they can't just watch the game?

Something called "NFL Call-the-Play Football" in partnership with www.AirPlay.com, claims to transform football from "a sit-back experience to a more engaged, connected and event-driven atmosphere."

"Fans can now predict every play in real-time before it unfolds on their mobile phone or computer. Run or pass? Which player will get the ball?"

The news release promises live leaderboards and opinion polls.

Or, you could just watch the game with friends.

An ESPN.com poll this week asked, "Whose career pretty much ended this weekend?"

Michigan Coach Lloyd Carr (48%) was leading Britney Spears (41%), with New York Giants Coach Tom Coughlin and Kid Rock polling in single digits.

We noticed the photo was of Spears.

BG and A-house,

I agree. My dad is a vet, several of my best friends (including a groomsman who was in special forces) serve our country, and working for a defense contractor I hear from so many folks about what is happening and what is needed in the field.

The sacrifices so many are making, the time away from family, the losses, and the sheer stress they are under cannot be overestimated.

I'm going to post some "free play" links. The first directly relates to 9/11.

Six years after 9/11 we see a recent GAO report indicating that more than 4 years after it was established the Department of Homeland Security is nowhere near where it should be as an agency. The conclusion here is that if DHS was a college student, it would be on academic probation.

And, while I'm squeezing in a few posts before beddy-bye... The UH has done a nice thing in giving the military discount tix, but, what dumb packaging of the idea. They force the soldiers to go down to the stadium to pick up their tickets. Have you seen the lines there? There are times that it'll easily take an hour to get to the window. After doing that the first time, they're not going to be coming back! They are allowed to pick up tickets during the week, but, we're talking soldiers who are busy. Anyone think they can run down to the stadium from Kaneohe, Hickam, Camp Smith, or Pearl Harbor on their lunch hour?

How hard can it be to let them purchase online with a special code and just check ID's when someone shows up with a military ticket?

NTP is suing AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint over patent infringement claims similar to those that they filed against RIM...they want royalties from all the cellular carriers. Of course, the patents have already been rejected by the USPTO, but they will still remain valid until the appeals process is over. So, this is NTP's last chance to cash in on their invalid patents.
