The Warrior Beat
Stephen Tsai knows University of Hawai'i sports, down to the last decimal of a 40-yard dash. He's lived UH sports since 1987. Few reporters get the inside information like he does. What Tsai writes is a daily must read.

Brennan, Bess arrive

Colt Brennan and Davone Bess arrived in stormy New Orleans today.
"It's great to be here," said Brennan, who spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in Colorado.
Brennan's sister gave birth to a daughter, Tea.
"I'm officially an uncle," Brennan said.
Bess, who spent the past two days in Californa, Tyson Kafentzis and Brennan were on the same flight from Denver to New Orleans.
They arrived to a thunder storm.
Robert Kekaula said visibility was about eight feet.

* * *

The Warriors arrived safely in New Orleans at about 1 a.m. Hawai‘i time.
According to media relations director Derek Inouchi, the Warriors were greeted by the Sugar Bowl committee and an eight-piece jazz band.
Quarterback Colt Brennan, slotback Davone Bess and the other players who did not travel on the charter are expected to arrive in New Orleans today. June Jones set a reporting deadline of 8 p.m. Central time.

* * *

Congrats to assistant coach Rich Miano and Lori Bennett.
They are expecting their second child July 10.
Miano and Bennett have been together for nearly nine years. Bennett said a small wedding is planned for Feb. 23. Miano actually proposed five years ago atop Koko Head.

* * *

For the latest and most fun updates on the Warriors, check out Ryan Grice-Mullins' journal:
http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/pr.html?prid=14874&p=3
It must be an as-told-to version since his name is not spelled to his preference. UH officials have said they will change it to Grice-Mullins for next year's media guide and jersey, as well as update the records.

I'm sure people have mentioned this before, but since I have the attention retention of an ant, here's an interesting Colt Brennan fan site:

OK, I'm going to leave the rest of the links to our archivist Garret, son of a very good Pigskin Picks picker.

Preview of the Sugar Bowl.

It was a 39-27 win Nov. 23 against that same Broncos team that showed the Warriors were for real. Along the way, they displayed resilience against Nevada, winning despite their gunslinging quarterback being sidelined by a concussion, and grit against Washington, rallying from a three-touchdown deficit in the season finale to preserve perfection.

Yet, an unmarred campaign has the team ranked only 10th, due mostly to a poor strength of schedule it played little role in choosing.

"If we're having success and doing things right, it really can put a defense in a bind, no matter who you are," Brennan said. "We've never been stopped. We only have stopped ourselves. If we make the right reads and the right adjustments, I don't think anybody can stop us."

"He's awesome," Stafford said of Brennan. "He's got a great release, a quick release. He does it really well. It looks good because he runs it and makes it look good."

If you had money riding on the Illinois-Ohio State game on Nov. 10, you've probably read about the checkered past of Big Ten referee Stephen Pamon that was outlined in a Yahoo! Sports story by Josh Peter. Pamon, a crew chief who has worked for the conference since 1988, has a checkered history of bankruptcy, casino gambling, child abuse and allegations of sexual harassment.

Here is video of one of the calls Pamon and his crew missed during the Fighting Illini-Buckeye game, won by Illinois, 28-21, The crew is also being criticized for its work in the Penn State-Purdue game on Nov. 3.

This huge donor to West Virginia *really* criticizes their AD!

Listening to him and hearing the passion in his voice, it's clear that Kendrick - for all his myriad business interests - retains a heartfelt ardor for his home state, his alma mater and its football program, which has soared to national prominence, particularly over the past three years when the school went 11-1, 11-2 and 10-2 under Rodriguez, also a Mountaineers alumnus.

"I grew up in that state,'' Kendrick said. "My heart is still in those mountains, even though I live 2,000 miles away.''

One of the ironies of the situation, said Kendrick, is that "the same people who're criticizing me now are the very ones who were asking for my help a year ago when it looked like Rich was going to Alabama.''

According to Kendrick, the deal with Alabama was apparently "signed, sealed and delivered.'' In the middle of the night, he said, he was asked by university officials if he would intercede. "They said we know you know how to negotiate,'' Kendrick said, "and we know that you know Rich and we know you support the program. Can you help? I said, 'Well, I'll try.' ''

Kendrick said he spoke with Rodriguez, who told him: "Ken, it's very sad. They won't listen to what I tell them about the things we need. I think the AD wants me gone.'' Kendrick said he asked, "Do you want to stay?'' and that Rodriguez replied, "Of course I want to stay.'' Kendrick asked him to put what he wanted in writing. Rodriguez sent a fax, outlining his requests.

"He was asking very little for himself,'' Kendrick said. "He wanted more money for his assistants, some improvements in facilities, an improved locker room, and some modest things - like waiving an old policy so that high school coaches could attend games free, and hiring another graduate assistant.''

Kendrick said he was "among a group of individuals who were willing to fund the whole thing,'' that "it wouldn't have cost the university a penny,'' and that "none of it would've come from taxpayers' money.''

But in the subsequent months, said Kendrick, West Virginia officials began to "stonewall'' on the other promises made to Rodriguez.

Ken Kendrick says he isn't upset with Rich Rodriguez. But he's definitely upset with West Virginia's administrators and officials - particularly Pastilong, an ex-WVU quarterback who has been the AD for the past 18 years.

"The focus of my concern is the way the program is being run,'' Kendrick said. "We have a poorly run athletic department and an incompetent AD and assistant AD. This is a $50 million business - and it is a business - and they don't have a strategic plan. They still run the place like it was a business the size of a dry-cleaning store.''

In Kendrick's view, Manchin has a blind spot when it comes to Pastilong, one of the governor's former college roommates.

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill *really* takes some shots at the BCS system.

“Now let me see if I get this straight,” McCaskill said. “We beat Illinois, they’re going to the BCS. We beat KU, they’re going to the BCS. What is wrong with this picture?”

Zing! Nice one, Senator. But she wasn’t done.

“I would like to see Congress take action about it because it’s really unfair,” she said, only joking. “We’ll have a lot of fun beating KU next year again, and this time beating Oklahoma and finishing it up.”

The Houston Chronicle has a VERY complimentary article about the WAC!

The Broncos stood toe-to-toe with the powerhouse Sooners on the coveted BCS stage and then outfoxed them in a thrilling 43-42 overtime win that quickly became a must-see instant classic. If the little guys in college football didn't have hope before, the Broncos gave it to them that night.

"That was huge, man. It was huge," said Bob Davie, an ESPN analyst and former head coach of Notre Dame. "Everybody, particularly defensively, respects Oklahoma. Oklahoma is always going to play great defense and for Boise to score that many points on them, that got everybody's attention in the nation."

In a bit of a role reversal, the WAC has a chance to firmly establish itself as the premier non-BCS league in the nation if undefeated Hawaii can pull off the second BCS upset in a row when it takes on Georgia in the Jan. 1 Sugar Bowl. The Bulldogs are a seven-point favorite, but as the Broncos showed last season, the game is played on the field.

"Nobody wants to play Hawaii right now," Davie said. "Having to play Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl, Georgia doesn't want that one. I promise you. And that's particularly true after what Boise did last year to Oklahoma. That's got everybody's attention right now."

"All of a sudden the Mountain West has kind of been forgotten a little bit," Davie said. "A couple years ago the Mountain West was really hot when Urban (Meyer) was at Utah. Now, all of a sudden it's the WAC. It's kind of gone in a cycle."

The WAC has fielded undefeated top 10 teams in three of the past four seasons. Now the conference, which re-invented itself with additions such as Boise State, finds itself back in the BCS mix for the second year in a row and poised to make a major statement.

"Fans will always associate Boise with beating Oklahoma," Davie said. "But as far as the WAC, they need to do that back-to-back years to associate the WAC with winning those kind of games."
It's that type of success that might eventually give credence to a WAC team that goes undefeated in the regular season playing for the BCS Championship.

Great idea to have a Texas football player have a cooking show on their web site! With the interest in UH and the unique food in Hawaii, this would be a great idea for a Warrior to do!

Throughout this season, Killebrew, a senior from Klein, has tempted the taste buds of Texas Longhorns football fans with a series of cooking shows on the school's athletic Web site.

The four episodes offer savory recipes — from pork tenderloin marinated in herb Dijon to spinach quiche to homemade chips and salsa to his mother's dump cake for dessert — that make the 6-2, 230-pound hard-hitting linebacker the Emeril of college football.

Check out how much this bowl director makes...11% of the entire budget for the bowl game! When they pay someone like this, I really wonder how worthy the bowls are of their tax exempt status. This guy made a LOT more than the bowl itself profited!

Then there's Gary Cavalli, executive director of the San Francisco Bowl Game Association, which puts on the Emerald Bowl. Cavalli received $362,018 in compensation and employee benefits in 2006, accounting for 11 percent of the bowl's budget. The game cleared $271,412. In a filing with the IRS, Cavalli said he works 35 hours a week.

Discussion of the tax-exempt status of the bowls:

In annual filings with the IRS, bowls, like all non-profits, must list reasons for receiving tax-exempt status and charitable activities the organization conducted that fiscal year. For instance, the Orange Bowl in its statement of charitable activities states, "The organization conducts the Fed-Ex Orange Bowl so that residents and visitors of the community become interested in the climatic, recreational, commercial, agricultural, social, educational, and economic interests of the area." In the same filing the Orange Bowl listed $22.6 million in gross receipts for the 2005 fiscal year.

For all the high-minded prose in IRS filings, bowl officials and their supporters in interviews are direct about the bowl's purpose.

"Bowls have always been commercial ventures by nature," the Pac-10's Hansen said. "They really don't care about how good you are but about how many people you can bring."

"We do these games to generate economic impact," said Bruce Binkowski, executive director of San Diego's Holiday and Poinsettia bowls. "To get people into town during a slow time of year."

Between 2001 and 2005, the three tax-exempt organizations run by Junker that operate the two Arizona bowls generated more than $110 million in gross receipts.

"You would be hard pressed to find a greater abuse of the tax laws and the taxpayer," said Murray Sperber, the former chairman of the Drake Group, a national faculty committee pushing for college sports reform. "Because ultimately, it's you and I, the taxpayer, that are paying for all this."

Discussion about how the real reason that there is no playoff in college football is the bowl system.

But the main obstacle standing in the way of a playoff is the bowl system itself, a billion-dollar-a-year industry operated primarily by tax-exempt bowl committees who have spent decades and millions of dollars nurturing relationships with influential friends on university campuses, conference headquarters, state houses and the halls of power in Washington, D.C.

Despite the renewed public outcry for a playoff, the bowl committees, operating with minimal oversight from the NCAA and Internal Revenue Service, have never possessed greater political and financial clout, according to an Orange County Register review of bowl financial records and other documents.

"The forces propelling it now are stronger than ever," Smith College economics professor Andrew S. Zimbalist said of the bowl system.

Washington, D.C., lobbying firm run by former Oklahoma congressman and Sooners quarterback J.C. Watts has received more than $500,000 since January of 2003 from a fund created by the four Bowl Championship Series games (Rose, Fiesta, Sugar and Orange), according to documents filed with the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.

Another article about this issue:

Junker’s jacket, however, isn’t the only thing raising eyebrows.
As director of both the Fiesta and Insight bowls, Junker received compensation totaling $415,035 in 2005, making him in the eyes of critics one of the poster boys for the excesses of a bowl system dominated by tax-exempt organizations largely unrestrained by the NCAA and Internal Revenue Service.

The only thing that I would have added is that she actually has gone to Vegas 5 times in a year before...but her childcare duties for my sister have limited her to "only" 3 times per year now.

She said she goes to Las Vegas sometimes up to three times a year to satisfy her urge to gamble. When she goes to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl with her husband and son who lives in San Diego, they'll all be looking for a gaming place.

"We like to gamble. We all love it," she said.

This guy thinks that UH's run-and-shoot makes football like flag football.

have long felt that tackle football, especially at the NFL level, has been migrating toward 11-man flag ball. I think it may be inevitable if the game is going to continue to be a significant part of a society that has become softer and gentler, and I think that the NFL, by investing in youth flag football, understands this.

Watch a pass-only team (such as Hawaii) on offense. There often isn't a whole lot more contact when they're on offense than you'd see in flag ball.

Yes, receivers (and occasionally a runner) are taken to the ground, but with the exception of sacks and the occasional big hit on a helpless receiver (which, despite my dislike for receivers as a class, I would like to see outlawed), most of the time the ball carrier is tripped up, pulled to the ground, or pushed out of bounds (if he doesn't go out of bounds voluntarily). The tackles are rarely violent, and the blocking mostly consists of holding a defender at arm's length.

The game we're playing now is a different one from the game I played 50 years ago when I was in college, and considering the way football has evolved from the days of the flying wedge to today's pass-crazy game with its push-and-grab "blocking", there is no reason to believe that the game we see today will be the same one they'll be playing 50 years from now.

I didn't realize that UCLA's AD never hired a football coach before.

Poor Dan Guerrero. He's the UCLA AD, and he needs a football coach. But see, he's never really hired one before. He came from Cal-Irvine, a school that didn't have football, and all he's done on the football front is fire a quality coach, Bob Toledo, and quickly replace him with Karl Dorrell, a guy with no experience as a head coach, and no real experience as a coordinator. Oh, his resume said that he was OC under Rick Neuheisel at Washington, but that was the equivalent of saying you were Steve Spurrier's OC at Florida.

Now, though, Dorrell is out at UCLA, and the pressure's on Mr. Guerrero to find a replacement, and - gulp - he's in over his head.

In these days when the football tail wags the athletic department dog, colleges continue to hire suits (or female coaches) to run their athletic departments. Now, these people may be okay at raising funds, scheduling, marketing and budgeting, and they may provide the added bonus of promoting gender diversity - but where football is concerned they are totally lost, and when it comes time to hire a coach, they simply have no idea what to do.

Interesting to read the Sugar Bowl pick by a paper that has regular coverage of Georgia.

Sugar Bowl
Georgia vs. Hawaii
Cinderella meets Midnight Black. The Bulldogs are going Darth Vader again after the black jerseys made a successful debut against Auburn, but Georgia was just as imposing in red during a 48-13 rout of Boise State to open its 2005 season. That's the last time Georgia faced a Western Athletic Conference foe, and it resulted in a meltdown of Broncos quarterback Jared Zabransky, who blended two fumbles with four interceptions in the first half alone. Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan won't be as generous, but he'll quickly discover the Bulldogs are a tad more athletic than Northern Colorado, Charleston Southern and New Mexico State. Bulldogs 41, Warriors 24.

Bess is #3 and RGM is #14 at WR, Adam Leonard is #15 at LB.

No Dan Kelly really surprises me, as does the omission of several other returning Warriors.

Article about how Georgia will practice in the SuperDome today.

The Bulldogs, who practice for the first time at the Louisiana Superdome tonight at 8:30, say they understand the challenge that awaits in facing the undefeated Warriors, the nation's highest-scoring team for two years running.

"They play with a swagger, a different type of demeanor. They're very confident," Georgia tailback Thomas Brown said. "They haven't lost a game and they've kinda been rolling through everybody, so any team like that is gonna be dangerous."

"It kinda seems like it's a video game for them. They're able just to make plays at will," Georgia cornerback Asher Allen said.

LIZ: Mahalo for clarifying who The Beast is. Since so few people have identified themselves with their "real" names, it's hard to know when something good happens.

GARRET: Perhaps your mother and others who are valued Hawai`i citizens yet still spend billions of dollars all totaled in traveling to other parts of the world to gamble might take some time to educate & inform decision-makers here about legalizing some forms of gambling here in Hawa1`i.

I'm sick of hearing supporters being identified as either morally weak & psychologically sick addicts OR criminal underlords who will destroy Hawai`i's culture & values.

If nothing else, how about horse-racing?

BULLA: Congratulations to your son and his teammates for their hard work. Any chance he might play for the Warriors or does he want an away-from-home experience?

ALL TSAIKOS: Send your
aloha for a speedy recovery to Stephen Verwers, UH's starting center. According to various sources, he's out for the season and probably will never play again. The only small bright spot in the picture is that he's already gotten his degree and was planning to take graduate work in spring semester.

Off to work, but it'll be a short day.

The Georgia players are curious as to how different New Orleans will be as compared to when they played there 5 years ago.

The Bulldogs' last appearance in the game came in 2005, but this is the team's first journey to New Orleans since 2002. The 2005 Sugar Bowl was played in the Georgia Dome due to the devastation suffered by New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath.

Georgia's coaches and players know they will find a very different city than the one they left five years ago.

"I'm interested to see what it looks like," Georgia head coach Mark Richt said. "I wouldn't think it would look exactly the same. How could it?"

"Teams that are used to winning are just really tough to beat," Richt said. "That's all there is to it."

"(Georgia is) by far the best team we've played since I've been here," Jones said. "They've got a lot of great athletes, a lot of team speed. We will have to play a perfect game to hang with them, but our guys are excited about going."

Good morning/afternoon Tsaikos.

My son gave me the Warrior book and I can't put it down. It's great reading and does a good job in filling in all the pukas fans inevitably have in deeper knowledge about the program. I appreciate JJ and his staff even more. Amazing the job they've done, especially with what they had. I also have a much better understanding of how the team became so close.

As a normal fan of a program is like watching a painting in a museum, one can appreciate it's beauty in a two dimensional way, without understanding the mind and inner workings of the artist. This book makes the program three dimensional for the reader and and lets us peek into the minds and character of the people involved.

It gave me a more intimate connection to the team and program. I really hope JJ and staff will stay for a very long time and become the Bear Bryant of Hawaii.

Georgia fans are really getting into their black-out.

The Bulldogs delivered merchandisers like Towe an early Christmas present when the football team decided to don the black jerseys against the University of Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl this Tuesday.

"If it's black, it's hot," Towe said. "We got in a shipment of 250 black Georgia replica jerseys, and those are all gone.

The black Nike UGA replica jerseys sell for $60 each and quickly have become fans' most popular apparel item, Towe said.

"The black jerseys, now that the team has worn them once, are the most sought-after we've ever seen," Towe said. "This No. 24 black jersey is off the charts."

No. 24, of course, is freshman running back sensation Knowshon Moreno.

Hibbett Sports in Georgia Square Mall has seen a similar rush on blackout clothes, said store manager Randy Parks.

"It's been hard to keep (the black jerseys) stocked," Parks said. "We got about 40 two weeks ago, and they were here for only 36 hours."

"I just wanted to see some of the players as they leave. Just tell them thank you for all that they've done and how nice and accommodating they've been to all the fans of Hawaii," said fan Gary Shishido.

Feature article on JJ!

Hawaii also represents underrated players everywhere, a team filled with second-chances and long shots who have proven they can succeed. No, Jones, 54, wasn't running from anything. This is what he wanted all along, reunited with a place and a people he has long loved.

"The NFL was one of the best times of my life," said Jones, 1994-96 Falcons head coach and a 12-year NFL coaching veteran. "I'll get another opportunity to go back.

"But this has been a real blessing for me. I have a love for the people of Hawaii, and I'm happy that I was able to come back here and do what I can."
Permalink 12/26/07 @ 11:07
He left on the table an offer to coach the NFL's San Diego Chargers in 1998 when he signed on with Hawaii, where he had played quarterback (1973-74) and later coached quarterbacks (1983). He knew about UH's drawbacks: poor facilities, recruiting handicaps, a huge talent gap.

He also knew of something more important: the Polynesian soul. Still preaching a run-and-shoot offense that helped mask shortcomings — the Warriors hardly run the ball — Jones also has managed to use football to tap into the islands' culture.
Permalink 12/26/07 @ 11:08
In all, 20 Warriors are transfer students.

"Coach Jones does a great job of just looking past the player and what he saw on film," Leonard said. "He sits down with the kids and sees what's on the inside of them and in their hearts, to bounce back from their situations."

Jones isn't known for his charisma, and the coach who arrives in New Orleans will not preen or gush. Jones, in fact, was so unmoved in his remarks at the team's postseason banquet that some felt him too cold.

"He is a little bit quiet and kind of hard to get, at first," Brennan said. "But watching him over the years, it's been fun. I've watched him grow a little bit."

More on Mel.

Veteran defensive lineman Bobby Hamilton and rookie Melila Purcell will be available this Sunday, and if the injuries for our guys continue to become a problem, I wouldn't be surprised if one of them started.
Purcell has spent the entire season on the Browns' practice squad after being taken by the team in the sixth round of April's draft. Purcell, at 6-foot-5, 285 pounds, may have a better shot at being active on Sunday considering he's practiced in the team's system all year (although Hamilton should still be familiar with it from his New England days).

Good Afternoon Everyone:

Had to make a quick stop to pick up some paperwork left behind earlier so I thought I'd check in.

Found the names of great places to eat featuring a variety of cuisines in/around New Orleans put out by a couple of different publishers. New Orleans food by itself is worth the trip according to my southern in-laws. I gained ten lbs. just reading about them.

If you're not one of the lucky ones going to New Orleans - Where are YOU planning to watch the game?
At home hosting family & friends? At someone else's house? At a sports bar or a restaurant such as Murphy's?

I cannot imagine that there's anyone reading this blog who has decided not to watch the game at all.

Initially, there was some discussion about putting on an open-2-all T-Party, but that doesn't seem to be happening now.

Probably many of the same people will instead be holding a private get-together at someone's home.

Have to run - again, mahalo to Garret for his posts about football and other topics as well.

Ronnie: Congratulations on being able to attend the game. Cheer for me, too.

I saw the interview, but it was taken out of context.
Colt didn't minimize the importance of an education. He just said he was glad the stress of meeting class deadlines was over because it had been a demanding week. Remember he was in New York for the Heisman, taking away a few days he could have spent on his project.
In our separate interview with Colt, he spoke of the value of a degree, how that's something nobody could take away. He also spoke of how proud he was to have graduated from UH, especially during the school's 100th year.
One last note: the writer's name ix Faux.

Can everyone imagine the Tsaikos having their brunch at Harrahs...when suddenly, Clement Moore appears and says:

'Twas the night before the Sugar Bowl,
And the Big Easy was quiet,
But was soon to get as boisterous as if,
The Tsaikos were on a diet,

The Superdome was all solemn
Waiting for the day,
But soon 114 awesome Warriors
Were to come out and play

With ST in his Polo Shirt
And Kekaula in his shorts
Warrior Fans throughout the nation
Could only talk of sports

The Tsaikos were tucked
Inside booths having lunch
Just some pre-game activities
A little something to munch

When in the Casino
There arose such a sound
That A-House and the gang
Stood up and looked around

The lights in the Casino
Shown merry and bright
It was even hard to tell
If it was day or night

When what to their wondering eyes should they see
But a little old Hermie
With Money Man and Drinking Buddy

First Soap! Then Lockers! Then Schedule! And Tickets!
Lucky UH had me
No one else could've fix'd it

The Tsaikos just stood their
Mouths agape and askew
A-House yelled, "What did he say?"
Nah, it couldn't be true.

But Fumbler continued
Giving himself mighty praise
Not knowing that soon
Tsaiko ires he'd raise

Hey Fumbler! Hey Hurkel!
In unison they shouted
But Herman just smiled
Gave a wave, never pouted

He spoke no more words
And his gestures were token
The Tsaikos shouted louder
Many things that can't be spoken

Then Hermie turned
And walked away from that place
That brought out big smiles
On every Tsaiko face

Peace was restored
As everyone geared up to roll
Let's have lots of fun
And just win the Sugar Bowl

MWAHAHAHHAHAHHAHHAHA

(Sorry so long....but it's in the Holiday spirit)....Okay, lunch is over...talk to you guys later.

James & Wreck:

I promised Mrs A-House that I will refrain from making "bad" comments about "you know who", but you guys are pushing the button and who knows what will happen.

I really hate to see him go the full length of his current contract as his consistent "bungling" continues and he refuses to take responsiblity. How can "upper campus" close their eyes to this situation.

While Murakami Stadium turf is nearly completed and should be ready by 1/14/08, the team will have very little or no chance to practice on it before starting its season. How sad that "time lines" were not effective much earlier (like May of June of 2007 ) instead of starting in September 2007.

Now, if only Cooke Field can get new turf - it will surely make a postive impression on all athletes who are considering a UH sports career.

Maybe "compliance guy" can take the time while in NALO to see how other schools utilize the generosity of commercial entities who would donate labor and materials to assist UHAD upgrade its facilities - LSU, Tulane, Georgia are starting points. Maybe "compliance man" has no connections like his boss.

Excerpt from Midweek by Jo McGarry

Some info on the Murphy/Osaki NO bash

But sometimes, particularly if you're Don Murphy, owner of Murphy's Bar & Grill, and Kurt Osaki, co-owner of Hukilau (and the man who designed the UH logo),a quiet drink can turn into, well, something a whole lot bigger.
"We were having a drink at the Hukilau," says Murph, and we got to thinking about what all the Hawaii people were going to do in New Orleans on New Year's Eve. We thought it might be fun to organize a party for the UH fans."
When the man who organizes the largest St. Patrick's Day party in the Pacific is on the team, you can be sure the party's going to be huge.
"We're expecting about 3,000 people," says Murph. The group has rented Generations Hall, an ex-sugar refinery builtinthe erly 1820s, as their venue. It's a great looking building with a lot of New Orleans style. There's a French Quarter garden, four dance floors, vaulted ceilings and art that depicts the history of jazz in New Orleans.
And, in a typically Hawaii-style twist, Na Koa will donate proceeds from the event to Habitat for Humanity's efforts in New Orleans, while the owner of Generations Hall will match the donation with a monetary gift to Na Koa.
"It turned out well for everyone," says Murph.
The Mardi Gras-style party will feature Cajun food stations, live entertainment and live Cajun and bluegrass bands. June Jones will be there, topping off the most magical football season in history, as will the UH band and cheerleaders. And if you go,you'll be surrrounded by friends and kindred spirits. Tickets to the bash are $125,and you can pick them up at Murphy's, Hukilau or at hawaiiancajunbash.com.

Mrs. A-house - There's always a small chance of damage - very small. In general, the dose and energy of the x-rays is insufficient to damage IC devices including CCD's and CMOS (camera chips). There can be sufficient dose to darken high speed photographic film - thus, the warnings about film.

'Twas the week before the Sugar Bowl, when all through the state, not a single fan was seen frowning, not even those that witnessed a defeat of our rival/friends Boise State.

The Rainbowtique was reeling with the shelves left bare, in hopes that John McNamara would find more merchants to strike a licensing fee so that the ratio of supply to demand was fair.

The WARRIORS were nestled all snug in their beds,

While visions of a SUGAR BOWL victory danced in their heads.

And JJ in his E'o Na Toa hat, and us in our own beds,

JJ stays awake working and plotting, while we lay down for a long Hawaii winter nap,

When out on the grass fields there arose such a clatter,

JJ springs from his office to see what was the matter.

Away to the window he flew like a flash,

Tore open the shutters and sees Jason Rivers practicing an end zone catch.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen rain

Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,

When, what to JJ's wondering eyes should appear, But a Nissan Titan pickup, and eight other WARRIORS appear,

With a little speedy driver, so lively and quick,

I knew in a moment it must be Daniel Libre, our running back who gave Fresno State's defense a heart attack.

More rapid than Colt's passes they came,

As JJ whistled, and shouted, and called his USO's by name;

"Now, Ah-Soon! now, Sauafea! now, Satele and Lafaele!

On, Colt! on Bess! on, Patek and Elimimian!

To the top of the hill! to the top of the training shed walls!

Now practice away! Practice away! Work your okole off until if falls!"

As dry leaves that before a wild hurricane fly,

When they meet with an obstacle, larger than life.

So up to the practice field the plan they unveiled,

With a bag full of tricks and of course, a lot of pass plays too.

And then, in a clapping, they looked out on the road

Greg McMackin's slippers were flopping along with the defensive genius in tow.

As JJ greeted his partner in crime

Down the street came Dennis McKnight speeding like a madman in the nick of time.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,

And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.

A bundle of PAIN he carried on his back

And he looked like a real WARRIOR with special teams' goals in the sack.

His eyes -- how they stared! his mouth carried a frown!

"OVER MY DEAD BODY WILL GEORGIA RETURN THAT BALL DOWN!

His large mouth was drawn up like a bow,

And the smack of his hand was enough to get the unit off to a grand stand.

JJ with his mind racing had his clipboard up to his chest,

As more and more offensive plays came to mind, he thought, "we are the BEST".

He had a broad face and a stature so tall,

And when he entered a room, everyone knows this man has seen it all.

He was experienced and knew what it took to win the day

And smiled when he thought of those that didn't understand his ways.

A scratch on his cheek and a nod of his head,

Soon let the WARRIORS know there was nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

And filled all the plays; then turned with a jerk,

And laying his finger aside of his nose,

And giving a nod, up to the offices he goes;

He sprang to his car, to his team gave a whistle,

And away they all believed like it was 1st and goal with Brennan ready to fire a missile.

But they heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,

"The Sugar Bowl is ours to win, and it is our destiny to do it right"!

Malaekahana, that's GREAT news about Mel. The success of the 2007 team would not have been possible without the efforts of the 2006 team. Mel, Ikaika, Samson, Nate, Reagan, LP, Tala, Dane, Ross, etc.: they are all very much a part of this as far as I'm concerned. I just wish they could have enjoyed something like the Sugar Bowl experience too because they all deserve it. LOVE those guys. I hope they are proud of what the 2007 team has done.

Al, I am glad you got to the site and saw my boys way bck when. Your right the afro was the generation hair do at that time. Local Boy Brad Pineau was from St. Louis H.S. as he now lives in Australia with 3 wonderful children and lovely Australian wife. Still tall and wearing glasses as he works for a telecommunication corporation. Yes, a very talented team as we held the UH record for most steals in a season with 263. Quick and athletic as we full court press and played tough man to man defense pessuring the ball and denying passing lanes. Mahalo for the recognition.

With the GAME next week it's hard to even think about next season, but all this stuff about it being "once in a lifetime" is just not accurate.

Well, provided certain things STAY IN PLACE and certain individuals LEAVE...

But I like the future and I took off some days during the spring to check out the new blood of the 2008 Warriors.

Esme,

what i have learned, is what the Warriors have learned this season...believe. if you don't believe in something, then you believe in nothing.....

if you can love, nurture, support, cajole, your kid, and throw in some positive reinforcement...the worst thing that could happen is that they'd be a decent human being.

my son was 10 years old and had to go through a knock down, drag out, divorce and he had to watch everything. i would say for two years i was in a 'void', a cave, just lost. it took me awhile to 'fix' me, before i could do anything for my kids. slowly i evolved, and hopefully for the better.

we have taken ryan to the mainland to various camps/combines and it started in the summer of his sophmore year. this time last year we were headed to San Antonio for the US ARMY Combine, for the top 500 juniors in the country....what an EYE OPENER. he realized what he had to do at that time to be competitive at the next level. he works out by himself usually, in a maniacal, frenzied state. he knows how to 'go black' in his mind, to go to a dark place where rage is the norm. he can turn the switch on when he straps it up; he knows how to get to the mental state of controlled chaos in his mind. that is what fuels the fury he needs to battle 300 lb linemen every play that are double and triple teaming him.

we call him 'da beast', but in my eyes he will always be my ry-ry, from a rolly polly pop warner playing kid, to 1st team all state defensive lineman.....WOW.

he is my hero, he is wise beyond his years, and has the compassion of an old soul. i thank God every day for blessing me with a son who has taught me so much these past few years. he is everything a father would ask for, a 3.8 GPA, DI Scholarship offers, all league, all state all star, a young gentleman, a st. louis man, well spoken, VP of his Senior Class, leader on the LIFE team at school, yet so gentle and caring with his little sister.....

each and everyone of us have the seed of success in our genetic makeup. some of us are nurtured along and this seed blossoms in our lives. others, despite all odds, create an environment that will make this seed germinate and reach it's fullness.

long story short, love on your kids....make them a top notch person first, and everything else will fall in place. however, i do have training regimens, workout routines, mental drills that we've used over the years which i feel has culminated with today's accolades.

make memories......

Mrs. AHouse, your digital camera will be fine as I check my camera in the x-ray chamber all the time and NOTHING has ever go wrong. I pretty much leave it in it's carrying case as I load it on the carrying bin as it goes thru the chamber tunnel. The memory card is safe in it's camera compartment as there is no need to take it out and put it ANYWHERE on your body part. Digital cameras are AWESOME as I have two with NO problems of them being defected anytime going through airport security. When I arrive in New Orleans will have mines ready and able and the FIRST picture I will take will be of you and your caring heart and smile. Take care and God Bless you and A-House for what you do to help Gods WONDERFUL people. You folks are the VERY BEST ! Sincerely, Cliff Sanchez.

Liz: The best one I've ever had they sell at Longs, I can't remember the name. I know it catches AM, and I'm pretty sure it catches FM too. The only problem is that it's kinda bulky. I've tried two different radio sets from Radio Shack — a belt clip-on and an arm strap-on, both with ear buds. When the reception is poor, however, you get mean feedback in your ear. With the aforementioned bulky earphones, the receiver picks up the reception better, and poor reception leads to quiet snow rather than annoying feedback.

Since I broke my latest radio again, I have to get a new one. I might just get that old one, it was the worst to wear but the best to listen to. I'll get the name when I buy it.

Bulla, the term "thank you sir may I have another" is from Animal House with Keivn Bacon taken the swat to be enter into Delta Chapter Fraternity. Saw it the FIRST time in Hawaii at the now dispose University Theater that was on University Avenue. Funny and pretty much had every student at that time going to watch it as the late John Bellushi stole the show with his portrayal of "Pluto" with his outrageous stunts and slapstick comedy. A GREAT time during that era when Hawaii was young with C&K, Olamana and the Cazimero Brothers. "Can you see me now Hawaiian eyes" Mahalo !

Liz: The link above shows a product similar to the one I was talking about earlier. I think the one I had was a Sony or something. I forgot a couple other negatives: (1) it has an analog dial tuner, not a digital tuner. Sometimes I found myself fiddling with the tuner when reception was weak. (2) There's a large antenna (larger than this Radio Shack one) that can sometimes get in the way.

Barry Markowitz showed me a radio he had at practice that I've also wanted to check out. You set the frequency, and the radio continually adjusts in a certain range to get the best reception. I think he got it from somewhere in Ward Centre. If he reads this, maybe he can talk about his radio.

Congratulations to Mel! I'm sure that he's worked hard all year and it would be great for him to get an example of how his hard work pays off. It was great to see how Mel improved during his Warrior career--he especially had an awesome senior season.

This year's team was ranked as highly as it was in preseason because of success of last year's team. Without that preseason ranking, UH might not have been able to move up enough to make it to the top 12 in the BCS. So, Mel and the rest of the Warriors last year helped get the Warriors to the Sugar Bowl this year.

So far I've been able to handle everything...but I don't think I can add more! I'm really glad the ticket stuff is over, as that really was a lot more than I could handle now.

This year's Sugar Bowl features the undefeated No. 10 Hawaii Warriors (+7½) and the No. 4 Georgia Bulldogs (-7½), and Hawaii's high-octane offense versus Georgia's stout defense will make for a very interesting football betting contest, to say the least.

Defensively, there's room for improvement for the Warriors. On this side of the ball, they are giving up 24.2 points and 348.9 yards per game.

Hawaii comes into this game at 12-0 SU (straight up) and 4-6 ATS (against the spread). They finished the season having dropped the cash in two of its last three games and five of the final seven.

Georgia will be playing with a chip on their shoulder after getting snubbed from a title game. They'll try to take its frustrations out on Hawaii with an offense that's scoring 31.9 points per game and collecting 379.1 yards and a defense that's allowing only 21.0 points and 324.7 yards.

The Bulldogs are 4-1 ATS in their last five neutral site contests, but they're a money-dropping 1-4 ATS in their last five games played on turf. blockquote>

Ok I promised that because yesterday was Christmas that I would not grumble about anything, but now that it's over.

The other day ST commented on the smart move on the AD parts to include a penalty for not finishing on time, well having worked in this field for over 40 years an most of it with Gov't contracts it is a standard term and condition that is included in every contract that I have ever seen it is called "liquidated damages" the only thing that changes from contract to contract is the amount of liquidated damages that is charged for each day the project is not completed on time. Most times on contracts under two million the liquidated damages are about 500.00 a day.

It is very difficult to get back any liquidated damages if the completion date is missed for other than major Godly acts. Most Gov't contracts cover their arse's pretty good when it comes to delays, about the only thing they give you as a contractor is rain delays if it is outside type work.

So if this is the first time that the AD/purchasing has had a liquidated damages clause in one of their contracts they have really screwed up. Which wouldn't come as a surprise to me.

Georgia practiced today...but they had a much shorter trip to New Orleans!

The team arrived via a Hawaiian Airlines charter just before 5:00 a.m. CT. They were greeted by a Dixie jazz band and members of the Sugar Bowl committee. Five charter buses boarded the team, coaches, administration, and support staff and their families to the team hotel.
At the hotel, another jazz band greeted the team while several Warriors, including starting receiver C.J. Hawthorne, had family members waiting for their arrival.

The team had a light day with no practice and team meetings in the evening. Most of the team spent time exporing the city despite thunderstorms that rolled through the area late afternoon.

"We're excited to finally get here," receiver Ryan Grice-Mullen said. "We've been waiting for what seemed like forever to get on that plane. The Sugar Bowl and people of New Orleans have been great and have treated us first class."

Now he's looking to give back to West Oahu kids, the best way he knows how.

"The bottom line is we want to do all these clinics to help out the kids on this side of the island enjoy top notch competition, camaraderie, and also to have them experience what the benefits are top being involved in athletics," says David Hallums, Ho'oikaika O Hawaii.

The former Rainbow Hallums says he has a number of former UH standouts lined up to help from Tita Ahuna to Dave Maeva and David Tanuvasa.

The multi sport camps are expected to get underway in the spring with football being first on the agenda. Hallums plans on holding that camp at Aloha Stadium.

Mahalo for your advice re my digital camera. I now have peace of mind that the plenty once-in-a-lifetime photos I plan to take in NOLA will be safely transported back home so I can share them with all the Tsaikos.

Go men na sai (excuse me) for not posting my thanks earlier when I gave Homey explicit instructions...

I'm starting to pack up for the trip. Huge relief to see Coach JJ and the team safely disembarking from their plane in NOLA.

Hope to see as many Tsaikos at the Harrah's brunch. A-House thinks it will be our best opportunity to get a group photo with the Tsaiko sign (we will be responsible for bringing the sign).

So busy...just skimming through previous posts...quick kudos to Ryan Eastman and Mrs. Okamoto...you make the Tsaiko Nation PROUD!!

It does look like Katy (Bo's school) has 5-10 D-IA prospects each year...and they normally go to pretty good football programs in the Big 12 or other such conferences. Bo could let UH know about the prospects from Katy who are juniors now and UH could recruit them early.

Katy seems to have a EXCELLENT offensive line...I think I saw a stat that Bo was sacked twice all season. There has got to be some big prospects there next year...one of Katy's strengths is in the secondary (the standout part of their D from what I've read), and UH has had a *lot* of success with DBs from Texas!

It's safer to put your digital camera cards through the x-ray machine than to carry it on you through a metal detector. Metal detectors use a magnetic field to detect any metal objects. You'll risk the chance of scrambling any camera cards if you carry them on you through a detector.

Yup! Got back this morning and went straight into work a little groggy. We do the same routine next week. This time from Kauai.

The UH band should learn to play the Eo Na Toa, Eo Na Toa, E theme songs. Play it at every first down made or just before key plays. It's heavy on the drums. Would sound cool and inspirational to the boys.

At the Sugar Bowl when UH scores, all the fans should jump up and down in unison with the UH Band. That would look so awesome. So powerful.

RGM updated his blog!

The best part of the bus ride was seeing the Superdome all lit up. It gave me chills and excitement knowing that we'd be playing there in one week. The meaning of this game is so big for the state and for our team and that gives me goosebumps. This is the biggest event in Hawai'i sports history and being a part of this, and with the chance to bring back another championship to the islands is so exciting.

Once we arrived in the hotel, it was cool to be greeted by a jazz band. I've never been a part of that before, being greeted by a band not only at the airport but at the hotel as well. After grabbing our keys we went to eat and then hit the sack.

Hawaii football coach June Jones has declared he is not interested in the coaching opening at SMU, according to a report in The Honolulu Advertiser.

SMU – without a coach for almost nine weeks – has a strong interest in Jones, according to a source with knowledge of the school's search.

SMU has also talked with former Texas A&M coach Dennis Franchione and reportedly interviewed former Miami coach Larry Coker.

Former Navy coach Paul Johnson interviewed in Dallas but took the Georgia Tech job days later. In November, Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe had to hold a news conference to put down rumors he would leave for SMU.

So many subplots for Arkansas at the Cotton Bowl!

Petrino, who was hired Dec. 11, has said he will keep a distance during the Cotton Bowl festivities. Interim head coach Reggie Herring – reportedly in the mix to become defensive coordinator at Texas A&M – is in charge for the bowl.

"It's been, as I've called it, a unique situation," Petrino said in a meeting with reporters last week. "You could put difficult in there, too. That's for everybody. I believe the staff is coaching them and working them as hard as they can and doing a nice job of preparation."

Several Arkansas assistants are set to join Nutt at Mississippi after the Cotton Bowl.

For anyone staying on the outskirts of NOLA, you are welcome to stop by my hotel to rest & relax & freshen up. Now, I know why I didn't rent a car - parking is $30/night. It's cheaper for me to take limo service to and from the airport. If anyone needs a ride from the airport to the Canal St. area on the 30th around 5:30 p.m., I've reserved towncar or SUV limo service. Email me at rich2176 at yahoo. There's room for 2-3 additional people. If more are involved, I can change the reservation to a stretch.

OT Story: So, I'm talking to the owner of the limo company in NOLA today and he has serviced about 25 film productions down there. Turns out he knows one actor from Hollywood who I actually know from about 13 years ago who worked on the TV show - Renegade with Lorenzo Llamas. Small world.

This article is basically an anti-statistics rant. Here is one of the points.

We have lived long enough under the tyrannical rule of statistics, and it's time to revolt. If athletes must always try to get an edge as the doping apologists assure us, then statistics mean ever less anyway. As a nouveau Brit, I'm starting to get mad at these numerical nuisances that have infested our contracts and distorted our view.

Misguided and misled, we somehow fashioned a whole sanguine summer of 1998 off two guys hitting home runs, one for a third-place club that finished 19 games out and one for a weak wild-card team. We later followed another hitter to 73 home runs in 2001, and the same guy to 762 career home runs in 2007.

Thus did an allegedly astute nation get hooked on a trivia -- the home run -- that only vaguely relates to its very game. Of the 40 baseball clubs to finish top-five in home runs in the eight seasons of the 2000s, only three made the World Series, only 14 even made the playoffs. No club higher than fifth in home runs won the World Series. As people who like the game of baseball itself can recite, no World Series champion has led the American League in home runs since 1984, or the National League since 1976.

I can't believe that THREE stations will carry New England's game this week!

In an unprecedented decision, the league announced Wednesday that CBS and NBC -- and not just NFL Network -- will air Saturday night's finale between the Patriots and New York Giants in a three-way simulcast.

The unexpected move by the NFL, which came under intense pressure from Washington lawmakers in recent days, means any fan will be able to watch the undefeated Patriots try to become the first team since the 1972 Miami Dolphins to win every regular-season game.
Permalink 12/26/07 @ 22:21
There is no question NFL Network is in demand when there are big games. The Nov. 29 Packers-Cowboys broadcast was the second-highest rated cable program for that week with 10 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research.

But when there is a less compelling matchup, or no game at all, the network's offerings regularly finish behind such cable fare as "Spongebob Squarepants," "Hannah Montana" and reruns of "Law & Order."

"ESPN, CBS, NBC and Fox really don't have any rights to put [game action] online," said Brian Rolapp, the league's senior vice president of media strategy. ". . . We were not comfortable with any long-term deal that would lock our fate up with another company."

The NFL's plan is to build its website with "two things that we have and nobody else has -- video and access," Rolapp said.

The league is using some of the same tactics to build its television network, using such proprietary events as the annual NFL combine and the draft.

Off topic warning! This is my only off topic link tonight.

I can't believe that a tiger got out of its enclosure at the San Francisco Zoo and killed one man and mauled 2 others.

Rich,

Just let me know if I should ask a few contacts for tickets. I once was even offered to watch a game in one of the luxury boxes for free...but I had to turn that down because I couldn't leave my family that day.

We have some Georgia links now! Georgia had a two hour practice today at the Superdome.

“It is definitely a highlight for us to be here in the Sugar Bowl and in the Superdome,” said Richt. “When you play here, you know you’re in a significant game. It was good to get our first practice in, and it’s great we’re going to practice here all week. It gets the sense of awe out of the way, so we’ll be ready to play some ball on the first (of January).”

Senior safety Kelin Johnson said the Bulldogs have a great opportunity in facing an undefeated Hawai’i team.

“It will be challenge for us, especially in the secondary,” said Johnson. “There will be a lot of chances to make plays and the crowd loves big hits, interceptions and big plays. Hawai’i throws and catches extremely well, like Troy. They’re receivers caught everything and Hawai’i’s receivers have done that all year too.”

About how Georgia views the bowl as a mix of business and pleasure.

Georgia will practice in the mornings today through Sunday, leaving the afternoons and nights free to enjoy the rewards of a 10-2 season.

"After practice, we want them to enjoy the bowl," Richt said.

That shouldn't be hard to do in this city where Harrah's Casino is just outside the door of Georgia's team hotel - the Hilton New Orleans Riverside - and the French Quarter is nearby. All gambling is off limits to the team this week .

The Bulldogs are scheduled to have a team dinner tonight in the French Quarter at Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse, where a 12 oz prime rib goes for $29 and the house filet for $42. The team will eat Cajun food Friday night at Mulate's and Saturday at Zea Rotisserie and Grill.

Garret - there was some talk on the news that the tiger may have had some help getting out - like someone left a door open.
