The Warrior Beat
Stephen Tsai knows University of Hawai'i sports, down to the last decimal of a 40-yard dash. He's lived UH sports since 1987. Few reporters get the inside information like he does. What Tsai writes is a daily must read.

Bravo

NEW ORLEANS — A chicken-skin moment occurred in the final minute of the Sugar Bowl when the white-clad Warrior fans rose in unison and gave their team an ovation.
The outcome had long been decided. But as June Jones has preached, this season wasn't about victories. It was about bonding, and the Warriors, as much as any other Hawai‘i sports team, built a warm relationship with the community.
That's something last night's loss will never take away.

* * *

For a former Olympic gold-medal sprinter, Herman Frazier is notorious for dragging his feet when it comes to business matters.
But the uncertainty over June Jones' future is creating concerns for the coming recruiting class.
If UH wishes to build on the recent success, things need to be done.
The clock is running.

Though the game was not what was expected, it did not take away from the pride and inspiration I have felt in the team all season long.

Thank you WARRIORS for a monumental season!!!

Congrats to Georgia on their big win! Very impressive.

And to UH for being undefeated WAC champs and bringing home a couple of $mil for the program. 12-1 and Colt in NY. A very nice season. I think sending them to the Sugar Bowl is a bit like sending the Georgia team to the Super Bowl but hopefully this season, game and the cash will help UH move up a few notches in the overall quality of their program, just as Timmy Chang folks helped the program move up to WAC championship level.

Colt looked like he felt everyone down - everyone who came to NO, everyone he every signed an autograph for. I wish Coach had rotated the QBs a little earlier to give Colt some perspective.

Ha, watching Barack Obama giving a speech on TV and someone behind him as a Colt jersey on.

UH was psyched out. They just weren't the same team we've seen all season. The UGA fans were very rude to them (they oo'ed the Ha'a which wasn't even shown on TV) as were the players. Their loss to UGA cannot take away what a great team and a great bunch of guys they are. The fact that they haven't trashed talked others shows a lot for their state/football pgm and the type of integrity these guys have. Go Warriors!
One more thing, what's up with only showing the UGA cheerleaders??? UH had cheerleaders there and a dance team but did we get to see that on TV? NO! that sucks!

I've got my UH shirt on and ready to go to work. If you can't support the team during a loss like this, then you're not a fan. Like Newberry said "If you're scared, get back on the bus!"

Thanks BB, Merv, Michael for showing some class during the weeks leading up to this game.

Chicken skin about the UH fans ovation. I saw alot of white shirts still in the stands till the end, while. There's alot to be said about true warrior fans.

Time to get down to business and beat Florida. Which leads me to...Tewho?

Let June Go! He has poor PR skills a grumpy disposition. At no point in the game did I see him get fired up or even try to fire up the boys on the sideline. Except during the 3rd Qtr. when the official review took way too long and he piped up just to get on with the game so he could move on to USC.
Colt, thanks for staying and providing joy and excitement to all UH fans team members and supporters, this season. I hope that million dollar contract is still waiting for you. If not, I hope the Athletic Director hires you as the coach of the BOWS.

You would think Herman Frazier would be highly motivated to resign June Jones. After all with as much criticism that Frazier has gotten can he really survive if June goes to SMU for example? Frazier's job is on the line just as much if not more than Jones' is IMO.

If June leaves it will become apparent that the university/state just does not have the political will to invest in a big-time football program.

My wife and I were sitting over the tunnel that UH came out of, and after the game, Colt was walking into the tunnel wearing his helmet (thought he was crying). He looking up at fan's who were still cheering, and waving his arms as if to say "sorry".

Brah, if you reading this, there is NOTHING to feel sorry about - you gave us more than we've ever experienced in the history of UH football.

I know the team wanted this more than any of us, and as usual, they played their guts out. Mahalo to every one of them.

Did anyone else notice how often our boys helped the UGA folks up after a tackle? Time and again, you see them reaching down, helping them up. I don't know that I saw UGA do that once. Like one of the players said, we don't give handshakes, we give hugs. Good job spreading the aloha.

Everybody loses sometimes. Let's not read too much into this. The real important numbers in this story are the number 12 and the number 1. Twelve wins. One loss. Number one in the WAC. I believe those were the gaols the team had set at the start of the season. Even in defeat, the Warriors have brought UH Football to new place. Georgia has been on the "big stage" for decades and still loses in big games too. The Sugar Bowl is the Warrior's first time out in the BCS spotlight. They'll be back.

Ethnic gloating has nothing to do with this story. If you look at the team, this story is about multi-culturalism and tolerance. That's one of the REAL truths that's been taught here.

This goes to show you that UH is not ready to play with the big boys. I remember Coach Jones said against San Jose St that they [UH] would have put 60 or more points had the field been better. Yeah, you can put up 60 or more if you are playing a Div II school or any of the high schoolesque teams in the WAC. But look what happens when you play a real team from a real conference: Colt committs 5 turnovers, throws no TDs and throws for less than 200 yards and is sacked eight times.

No, those are not Heismen numbers.

Our boys were valiant until the bitter end. We are proud of our Sons of Hawaii, they NEVER gave up!

Kudos to the UGA coaching staff who had one month to neutralize all of our 4 wide out R&S weapons and diversity their offense with passes to complement their awesome running game. All season long we were OVERACHIEVERS with limited resources but won games with guile and guts. Our secret weapon was the fast strike ambush which was taken away from us with the long break until New Years Day. We love our Warriors and salute them in their dream season. There is no team in the country that has the fighting heart of our great team. God bless Hawaii!!

We went as far as we could go, given the resources we had. In fact, it was amazing that Jones engineered a trip to the BCS. Now that UH has seen what it's like to play in the big time, decision makers must determine if they are willing to invest the necessary dollars to re-hire June and get the facilities and recruiting up to big-time college football standards. Recruiting shortfall was especially apparent on the offensive tackle position last night.

If JJ leaves in part because of the contract situation, I don't know how Herman Frazier keeps his job.

And in such a hypothetical situation, if HF does keep his job, I can understand why JJ would want to leave. That'd mean not only is the AD department broken, but whoever is supposed to have oversight of Frazier is also broken, corrupt, and/or incompetent.

While a congrats is in order for the Rainbow Warriors WAC Championship, I'm sick of hearing all the Mahalo, Ha'A, togetherness crap.

Football is a punishing game premised on speed, agility, strength and size. Hawaii was dreaming if they thought their WAC schedule with "quality wins" against Boise State (who lost to East Carolina) and San Jose State would prepare them for the brand of football played in the SEC.

Lastly, you Warriors should concern yourselves with the cheap and dirty play of Keenan Jones. After giving Mikey Henderson a game-ending concussion in his final game as a senior, he had the audacity to "lose" his helmet a few more times to get his face on television. He's a classless, no-talent that deserved the whipping he and the rest of his mates recieved.

Its an insult to college football that (1) Hawaii got a BCS shot, (2) that Colt Brennan received any Heisman votes, and (3) that you can call yourself Division I playing that two-hand-touch schedule.

Warrior power is in keeping their heads when the Dog Boys gave them grief including shucking a hand away when someone was trying to help them up in the endzone. The time is now to join that big stage and use the $$$ to recruit student athletes and retain coaches to keep the stability of the program.

Schedule tougher teams that are willing to play on Oahu if they dare and keep going after it. Colt and the boys if you read this...keep the faith Brah as this one night and you guys have way to many good ones to let this seep in badly.

As a former season ticket holder, (job transfer to the Mainland...) I am proud of the season UH has had. Yeah, okay, the Warriors (always Bow'z to me...) had the misfortune of running up against a UGA team that had something to prove, and is peaking at the right time. (god; I pitty the other SEC schools next year)But when the dust settles and the smoke clears, UH has put itself on the right path. This isn't the end; only the beginning. Over time, this loss will fade. What's left will be the knowledge that finally, UH has made it to the national stage. Unlike Boise State, The Warriors (Bow'z) need to defend their WAC Championship. That task starts today! Re-Sign coach Jones, Recruit like hell and hit those weights. As they say in the Bayou, "Geaux Bow'z."

For the seniors, thank you for your hard work & dedication. For the underclassmen, keep your heads up, keep plugging away. Redemption in the sports world can always be found right around the corner (Possibly in Florida?).

Congratulations to all the Warriors past & present for a remarkable season. I still believe that there is much more to come for the Warrior Tradition.

When the Georgia fans started chanting "over rated" I believe every person from Georgia in Hawaii was put in jeopardy. They are obviously still fighting the civil war and we will not forget the rudeness, classless and arrogance of the Georgia fans. The players were even harrassing our ball girl on their sidelines. This was an eye opener for many of the Hawaii folks. No wonder so many of the Louisiana people were routing for Hawaii. Why is Frazier allowed to repeatedly mismanage things and repeatedly put our athletic program in such disadvantageous postitons. Does the leadership care if JJ stays or not? ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

A reality check of what it is like at the next level. In organizational dynamics, the journey must continue until we are able to compete consistently at this higher level. It will take great leadership and ability to bring in the kind of recruits that will buy into this vision. It will take better facilities and a budget that will make it less of a challenge to go for the blue chip student athlete. The bigger, faster, stronger won last night but the will and fire must continue on this journey. One bumpy road does not a journey make (Yoda-ism).

Congratulations Warriors, your magical ride in 2007 season will be the path for others to follow and build upon. WE, WHO ARE TRUE WARRIOR FANS ARE READY FOR THE JOURNEY TO CONTINUE!

Haoles that have a problem in hawaii are just that, Ha Ole. They do not breathe the spirit of Hawaii and therefore the spirit does not breathe in them.

Hawaii deserved to be there. Let's not forget, UGA is ranked higher than Hawaii and maybe in this instance, the ranking rang true. If a team is ranked say 1 and they are playing a #6 team, if rankings are correct, then the #1 team should dominate the #6. Maybe the BCS ranking for UGA and Hawaii was right after all.

But, move on from that. Reflecting on the season, the UH football team made us proud no matter what mainlanders say. Who are they to try to spoil our magical season?

Congrats again to the Warriors on a fine season...

I'm not worried that we'll get through this tough loss and move on. We do have things to work on (like improving the play of our O-Line) but nothing that can't be fixed. Yes, the Warriors could have played better and didn't seem to have the same form as usual, even when we played the PAC 10 and BIG 10 teams and the SEC darling Alabama....but coulda, shoulda, woulda, we didn't get the outcome we wanted. It is just one of those things and we need to move on....and look to the future.

Take nothing away from UGA. They are a good team, that had something to prove to the rest of the nation (i.e. that they should be playing the National Championship Game...and I for one am for a playoff system...which will never happen until the BCS big boys say it will), and are peaking at the right moment.

UH need to get off its butt and make a commitment to the Warrior program. Sign JJ to another contract, put money into the program, and get things going. Now is the time. People are willing to donate money, sales of UH items are at an all time high...the mood in the community is there, and has been since last year, seize the opportunity and run with it.

C'mon UH, for once get out of your ivory tower and listen to the masses.....that means you President McClain, Chancellor Henshaw, and Herman Frazier....

It'll be on my huge poster next year at BSU v Hawaii. Look for it!

UH Football Evaluation durinhg the Sugar Bowl:

UH O-line - (Steinhoff and AhSoon) didn't stay on their blocks to protect Colt. They were either too scared or too slow to make their blocks. JJ should have gave the ball to the linemen to run so they can get the feeling of being from all angles!!.

UH Running Backs - they missed important blocks in the backfield to protect Colt and didn't run hard (scared too??).

UH Defense - not making the right reads and can't tackle, and the LBs and safety couldn't make open field tackles. Georgia's O-line controlled the trenches and the line of scrimmage.

JJ, you should have put your foot in both your offensive line coach and defensive coordinator mouths for not getting on their players to suck it up and start playing football. It looked like every player on the UH team was scared to their bones!!. Why??. Georgia's kids bleed the same red as our kids!!. This is a big lesson learn for UH and hope that this never happens again to our kids. That was so embarrasing for the team and Hawaii, and I feel for Colt not getting the ample time to throw the football. All of Colt's interception and fumbles was due to rushing his throws because of the pressure he was getting all night and for the o-line not blocking.

Good season UH Football and lift your heads up with PRIDE!! We are proud of you!!

Congratulations Warriors. I am proud of the team, although understantably sad for the loss. Also congratulations to the Georgia Bulldogs.

My 2 cents follow:
- Sorry but I have to agree with most people who ask, why was Keenan Jones still in the game after that nasty hit? JJ should have benched him permanently. He did more to motivate Georgia than anything else.
- I could go on with monday-morning quarterback analysis, but the best thing is to throw this tape away and not look at it. Start looking at Florida tape. There won't be 30K UH fans at the swamp next year.
- Believe it or not, I prayed for this team yesterday at church and asked God to "give them whatever You think they can handle". After a restless night wondering what happened, I now believe He did answer my prayer (just not how I wanted). There were a few selfish players who were not ready to handle the lime light, while the core of the team will dust themselves up and believe just as strongly as before and they and the team will be better for it.
- Before I lived in Hawaii for 13 years, I too was one of those mainlanders who associated displays of cultural pride with racism. Now I know better and forgive those who don't.
- Colt "took one for the team" last night. Despite everything that went wrong in all areas of the game, and because of his poster boy status, Colt is not done taking sacks in the media, etc. The entire Warrior team will need you now more than ever. This is where "I believe" is put to the test. What? you didn't know there would be a test? There is always a test.
- I don't know Mr. Herman Frazier other than reading all the criticism he receives here. However, I do sympathize with the challenges he must face. Hawaii has to be one of the toughest AD jobs in the country. I vote for cutting him a little slack (unless he lets JJ get away).
- Speaking of JJ, and back to K. Jones. Perhaps JJ might consider taking a page out of Coach Richt and handing off Offensive Coordinator duties (money permitting). Coach Jones' players needed someone to keep them calm like only he can be. JJ and Colt were calm, but the rest of the team (exhibit A = K. Jones) were not benefitting from JJ's coaching.

Please don't write hate mail. I am having an attack of reality and decided to write my opinion. Which is all it is. I don't mean to diminish the dream season that the team gave us and all the accomplishments of the players, the coaches, the band, the school staff, and the fans.

Mahalo and Go Warriors.

I agree. They looked awesome and probably should play for the National Championship.

I really do think, and you guys know this from my posts last year, that a college playoff system is long overdue. Until we have such a system in place, we will always have a system with a questionable national champion....

I just feel so bad for our boys, they gave us a magical carpet right we will never forget. In the process they brought the whole State together as one. This story is just beginning, IF we don't loose the center piece, JJ, to HF's stupidity and ineptitude. Now is the time to build, if we don't seize the moment now, we'll never have a big time program in Hawaii.

I hope that this game will convince the powers that be at UH that the football program is going to need more money in its recruiting budget to recruit the calibre of players they need to compete outside of the WAC. Hawaii did not have the calibre of players it takes to beat a top ranked SEC team.

I'm sure those "fans" won't be going to any games or supporting the team until they win again....that's the sad part about a lot of Hawaii fans...they don't support the teams 100%, win or lose...

Okay, off my soapbox...and off to work....

What would I remember about Colt Brennan - and what should Hawaii remember about Colt Brennan?

I will always remember him as a QB that lead Hawaii to a WAC championship. I will remember him as one who beat, among others, Northwestern, Michigan State, Arizona State.

I will always remember him as a young man who became a keiki o ka aina - a child of the land - who captured the imagination and the love of the Hawaiian people.

The loss at Georgia and the Sugar Bowl is not the end of the world just as Georgia's loss to Tennessee and South Carolina was not the end of the world for them.

So Colt, and Hawaii, hold your heads up high and be proud of what has been accomplished so far

When Georgia fans chanted "over rated", they weren't doing it to rub it in to the Hawaii players, it was for the rude, cursing Hawaii fans. I was cursed by 5 different sets of Hawaii fans, one of whom couldn't have been over 10 years old. However, I'm smart enough to know that every team has good and bad fans alike. Maybe they were drunk and not acting like themselves.

Georgia gave the game everything they had...partly out of respect for Hawaii and partly because they felt they got slighted by the media.

Here is something to think about for everyone who thinks Georgia was rubbing Hawaii's nose in the game....who start trying to take it easy on the opponent when you take out starters, and then put in 3rd stringers. It's not fair to put in kids that have worked just as hard as everyone else, and finally made it to the big stage, and then just make them hand it off up the middle. They should get to run the offense. Also, Hawaii was going for it on 4th down and throwing deep. As soon as Hawaii quit trying to score, then Georgia would have quit as well.

Hawaii did trash talking and cheap shots. Y'all ain't a bunch of angels who got mistreated. June Jones admitted that he got some Hawaii players out of jail.

You are a good team. You DID belong. Don't try to spin things after the fact by making it sound like the refs were against you and Georgia has no class.

Georgia respect you enough to take the game seriously. When you think about it, that shows how far you have come in a short period of time.

UGA's D-Line overwhelmed and absolutlely destroyed the Offensive Line, especially the 2 tackles. They weren't any bigger than some of the D-Lines they faced earlier in the season. But, they were far SUPERIOR in quickness and technique. How can you have a 3 or 4 man pass rush and not be able to provide any protection?

Georgia's D-Line made it so easy for the LBs & DBs to drop into zone coverage.

Colt's inability to pass effectively is based on the constant pressure he was receiving. The guy sucked it up and tried the best he could but he was just getting beat up, play after play.

Agreed. Like I said last night, comparing Hawaii's recruiting budget ($50,000) against UGA's recruiting budget ($500,000) or their overall athletic budgets UH (approximately 21 million for 19 sports) UGA (approximately $75 million)...there is no comparison....

Hawaii needs to spend the money if it wants to get the money coming in....so HF needs to get his act together and seize the opportunity....the more money coming in for football from outside revenue sources will only benefit the overall academic environment of the university....but what the heck do I know, I'm just a peon, commoner compared to the elite minds at UH...mwahahahahahahaha

Don't be disappointed in the way the Warriors performed tonight! They gave it their all and although they came out on the losing end, what they accomplished this year is more than any of us could have ever expected.

We all had extremely high expectations for this team. We thought they would walk out on that field against a very, very talented Georgia squad and simply fling the pigskin as if they were facing Utah State. We had been spoiled by the on-field successes of Colt & Co. and, in a way, blinded from the truth -- that the the Bulldogs were deeper and more talented than Hawaii.

Think of what's been accomplished this year -- a 12-0 regular season, a WAC championship, a Heisman finalist. Ten years ago, when we were going through "Von Appen Years" could we ever, in our wildest dreams, have imagined this?

Years from now, when we talk about the 2007 Warriors, we shouldn't talk about their Sugar Bowl defeat. Rather, we should remember how this team rejuvinated the football program and how it lit a fire under the entire state. We should remember the joy we felt when those pesky Broncos from Boise were finally vanquished. And we should remember how a kid from California, through humility and aloha spirit, became a both a son and ambassador of Hawaii.

So keep your heads high, Warrior fans! The perfect season may be gone, but the effects of 2007 will stretch far beyond any national rankings.

WE STILL BELIEVE!!

Brad, I kinda think there really was too much pressure on him and he took it to heart. I mean, JJ said it best, Hawaii fans payed lots of $, taking out loans even, to be there for this once in a lifetime experience and things didn't go as hoped for.

Colt, to me, was the face of this team. He understood how much this meant to the program and to the state. How could he not feel personally responsible. (Not that it was his fault, but, he probably felt that way.) That is what selfless players do. They do not point the finger. They take responsibility, even when it isn't all their fault.

To all the Bulldawgs fans your team is awesome, BCS champion level. There are always a few rowdy fans from every school...but all in all the UGA fans that have posted here have been great and respectful and understand the the difficulties of playing out in the middle of the Pacific with no money for recruiting. Aloha Stadium at 50,000 is one of the largest stadiums of the Mid Majors and we still don't fill it up every game, but still have one of best attendance avg....and remember it is on Oahu only one of 7 populated islands. For sure we are not in the same caliper as the BCS conferences who consistintly fill up 80-100 thousand seat stadiums and have over 100 years of football tradition. But our Warriors have gone where no other Hawaii team has gone before and for that we are grateful and give them our love and thanks.

I'm a UGA grad (Class of 1975) - Bulldog through and through and couldn't be more proud of our team. That said, I want to take this chance to say thanks to the UH folks - what a fantastic season, and, from what I could see, a fantastic fan base. I could've driven to NOLA in about eight hours-to spend the $$$ and time to get from the Islands to NOLA was impressive. I hope UH makes it back to the BCS soon, but losing June Jones would be a horrible mistake. (I thought the Falcons firing him was a mistake - I wonder if he'd like to return to the ATL?) One last observation-I'm leaving my classroom (I teach in a suburban ATL HS) now, and its about 38, with a wind chill of high teens to low 20s. Life in Hawai'i sounds pretty sweet to me right now.

The Hawaii football team made dollars out of pennies. Imagine what we could do with an athletic department and administration that is committed (translation: money) to excellence. With soapgate, the bumbled schedule and ticketgate, if Frazier allows June Junes to leave for another program (SMU, for example) he should get fired because it would be the equivalent of the death penalty SMU got in the 1980s. Then pidgin English would get a new vocabulary term -- Fraziered meaning screwed over.

I'm a Dawg but keep your heads up. All teams go through growing pains when they're moving to the next level such as playing against the likes of UGA, etc. in Bowls like this. UH just needs experience as its as its a different beast to prepare for. Ya'll will start to reap the rewards soon. HOWEVER!!, UH will NEVER be strong National program unless JJ integrates a strong running game and utilize TE's. His offense is one-dimensional and we exposed its weakness with a four man rush all game. There was nothing ya'll could do. National powerhouses are multi-dimensional with a number of weapons.

You can ask us to do ANYTHING to help get things moving forward. You know that you can get the boys back to a victory in the BCS soon. We know that too. If we have to carry signs outside of McClain's office, we will. Just please come back, so we can work together at changing things for the better. The program has just begun to snowball and we need you here. Mahalo for everything, Coach.

Well. Happy New Year, everyone!!!

Not quite the way I envisioned welcoming in 2008, but I will take it any how. The option would be that the Warriors were not invited to play at the Sugar Bowl. The fact they were invited and played there is an achievement in and of itself. No shame there!!!

Seems this blog has finally hit the big time, too. Before today our 'ohana was just that -- our family. But, with the success of our Warriors we have thrown open the doors to others. Sadly, not only do we add valuable members to our 'ohana, but we also have the crazy uncles and aunties, and the down-right chromosomally challenged cousins as well.

When those kinds of people show up it is only because they have noticed something great. Like crabs (was that not a topic a few days back?) trying to escape from a bucket -- one almost gets out but the others pull it back in.

Let us continue to not stoop or belittle our selves and Warriors with their foolishness and misplaced anger, arrogance and ignorance.

GO WARRIORS!!!

Aloha Kakahiaka a me Hau'oli Makahiki Hou!

I would encourage everyone to read Miller's book: "Hawai'i Warrior Football: A Story of Faith, Hope, and Redemption"

What happened this last season (YEEHAW!) and at the Sugar Bowl (not the outcome we wanted, but our Warriors played until the end - maika'i no for the fans who gave them a standing ovation and sang HAWAI'I PONO'I to them- I bet cha that LizK LED them in song with her awesome voice!), is but another chapter in OUR story.

Coach JJ started from the ground up- he has accomplished much with the players and the team; now it's time to maintain that success and go to the next level- our next Bowl appearance where we do better- I BELIEVE.

It is also time for his magic to spread to the next level of the program by addressing facilities, recruiting money, assistant coach money, etc. He now has the platform to do that with the foundation building he has done these last few years. The foundation is solid and now he can build UP- Just like with JJ calling for a white out- he was calling the shots and everyone listened (even tho Admin had earlier called for a green out)- JJ is in a prime position for everyone to listen to him and for his opinions to carry some weight which will result in change to the Athletic Dept- which will then continue to bring success to the football program- which will then bring money into Uh- which can then address the needs of the larger campus- instead of a vicious cycle, we will now see a successful circle- I BELIEVE.

Our Warriors are our sons and played their best- that is why I would never participate in an 'over-rated' chant or wear a Buck Foise shirt as I would be mindful of the fact that the opponents are also someone's son- and this is a game, after all. Our sons should not be made to felt that their success as human beings rests upon the scores of a game. There is so much more to life and that is why Coach JJ builds UP and not down- that is why you rarely see him yelling at our sons on the sidelines. That is why some poeple misunderstand his calm demeanor on the sidelines as not fired up- it's actually quite the opposite. At the time of the game, he wants to win, but he also wants out sons to have fun- he has said that repeatedly. This is not the NFL- this is college. Further, it is easy to be gracious when winning; the true test of character is to be gracious when there is a loss and not blame the refs, or anyone else. Our sons have always done a good job of accepting responsibility- I saw some of that last night- I also saw our players consistently extending a hand to the GA players when they went down. We need to go back and look at the tapes to see what went wrong and work on it for the next time. Our Warriors are WAC CHAMPS for 2007- They will be back! They have already started the journey for 2008- I BELIEVE.

For GA, football is everything- look at the history of their mascot dog and how much energy they put into that alone! For Hawai'i, football is not everything. We have sold out crowds for men's and women's volleyball- one of the nation's best stadium attendance consistently. It's a cultural thing for GA and we should respect their culture as much as we want to have our culture respected. They felt slighted by the Bowl they got and the opponents they got and they were out to prove themselves. Of all people, we should understand that as we felt the need to prove ourselves all season and still feel the need to defend ourselves. They are to be congratulated.

I hope there is a good turn out to welcome our sons home at the airport! They did us proud and I look forward to the next Bowl appearance and the hope that I can attend it. I look forward to the parade for them. I look forward to the presentation of their WAC CHAMPS rings! I look forward to next season!

GO WARRIORS!
WE LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

The taste of the good life
never comes easy,so maybe this time around it was an
aberration,and the player's
minds say one thing and their
bodies say another.Georgia
a great team.But if the Hawaii
players and coaches enter the
game with such pompousness,and
not prepare for the game like
Georgia,a team that in every
practice leading up to the
game, I see them in full pads.
And the Hawaii team only
in helmets and playing tag,then understandable that
the player's minds will say
one thing and their bodies will say another.Case in point,almost 20 mistackles,6
turnovers and no sparkle in the team.Coach Jones had the
option of more practice
sessions in the Superdome but he elects to practice at the
Saints facility.Coach???Why???
Doesn't it make sense to let
the players get acclimated to
game like situations?Case in
point,we had more penalites of
the stupid variety,namely
nervous and undisciplined kind.Let them get the wowness
out of their system as they
looked around the Superdome.

I'm not here to take away how
Goergia outplayed and outcoached us.Or even sanitize
the situation.But if Coach
Jones,and there is plenty that
I disagree with him with on,
namely game preparation and some basic strategy,went
on record and said," we're not
too far behind the best teams
in the country",I would agree
with him 100%.And I add my
opinion with no biases at all.

Honestly I have never seen such a butt whippen' before on the National Stage. The score doesn't begin to describe how completely unable UH was able to do anything on Offense or Defense. It was like a high school team playing against the Bull Dogs. Regardless of the record the BCS should never have placed them in a BCS game. If anything placing Georgia against USC and Illinois against UH may have been better. UH I give you points for school pride and love of your team but please don;t run on about 12-0 because all your wins were against second rate teams (last game of the season you barely won against the crappiest team in the PAC-10).

A message to Colt and the entire Warrior team:

One game does not DEFINE you, even if it is a Bowl game.

You are defined by the people you are, the people you've become, the choices you've made, the bond that exists. That's who you are.

And we love you.
~~~~~~~
You have showed us strength through adversity and taught us to BELIEVE.
You have nothing to be sorry about. Hold your heads high. You are coming home to the open arms of a state that embraces you.
My only regret is that this is the end of the ride. We will continue to follow the ones that are still here as we always have. And those of you who go on to bigger and better things, we will follow you into the greatness you deserve. Make us proud.
V8 JACK RABBIT:
It is not necessary to wait until a new governor is elected in 2010. There are several ways to get this done in the next six months.
First, assuming that you are a Hawai`i resident, contact your state senator or state representative and ask him to submit a bill to do this. As them to work together to make the language in both bills the same. If there is any reluctance on their part, contact me directly at swood at hokudoctcom.
Or you can check out my post on 01/01/08 @ 23:17.
And yes, this is the REAL WassupDoc posting - as most regulars can tell.
Never in my life did I imagine I'd invest so much heart and hope into a sports team. Yesterday, I wore my UH sweatshirt proudly while traveling from Florida to LA. If my work dress code didn't forbid it, I'd be wearing it still today in spite of our loss! This season was an AMAZING, heartfelt run and I admit, I cried last night but more because it was obvious who had more heart and class. I am so proud of the UH players and fans for their unrelenting spirit! Georgia is an impressive team with a ruthless leader (as evident by the smirk and unneccessary calls he made last night) and less than impressive fans who can mock all they want. No one can knock the support and spirit Hawaii fans have for our team. IMUA WARRIORS!
I BELIEVE: I don't care about your typos - It's the other folks on the blog who care about typos.
By the way, very thoughtful & positive post at 10:18 am. I support what you had to say.
This team will go down in history as the benchmark for future athletes - most of whom are still wearing diapers. It's important to look well into the future and not just what the team needs now.
By the way, mahalo also for your support to my post last night - using another name - oncerning the mean & nasty use of the "gay" word.
All recruits watching the game knew one team wold have to lose, but to have the uncertainty about the coaching, and thus the uncertainty about the future, broadcast to every potential recruit was NOT the find of free recruiting JJ was looking for when he hoped to take his team to the national stage.
It falls back on Frazier.
He needs to go.
what's so hard to understand? somebody wins and somebody loses.....ANY GIVEN DAY... and it wasn't our day, plain and simple. Georgia brought it, and delivered it, and earned it.
So, does that negate the hours, the days, the weeks, the months of blood, sweat, and tears these Warriors invested in just getting to the Sugar Bowl? HELL NO!!
THEY ARE WARRIORS FOR LIFE, AND 60 MINUTES DOES NOT DETERMINE YOUR LIFE
Defense did OK, especially considering the number of turnovers and the minutes they spent on the field. Special teams did OK, surprisingly. Which leads to the conclusion that the offense failed, utterly. Colt's performance, hard to say since he was running for his life or getting pummeled for most of the game. The O line is the most glaring deficiency against this caliber of opponent. Particularly slowing down the DEs. When a DE can basically get to your QB untouched, you're going to have problems.
Aloha FKW: Whatever or Whoever tickles your fancy. Hit any more buffets lately? Figuratively speaking, of course.
However, blog rules which I did not set state that two people cannot use the same username amd that it's fc-fs.
WassupDoc belongs to me; however, everyone has a price so if the fake WD is willing to pay me off - how about UH two football season tickets on the 50-yard line in the orange section row anywhere in rows 26 through 30 for the next 25 years - then she or he can have the name.
CHANGE OF SUBJECT:
According to an earlier press release, the Warrior Football Parade is set for SUNDAY, JANUARY 20, at 4 pm along the traditional Waikiki parade route.
RE another T-Gate or T-Party: BG has tentatively scheduled a get-together on Saturday, January 12, before the Hula Bowl; however, that game starts at 1 pm so it may not be possible to put something together from 9 am to 12 noon.
Since it's his gig, he'll have more information after his return from New Orleans.
Finally, sorry for not taking off the bold in the 11:33 post above.
I think it's a great idea and plan to do so with my two legislators.
hermie,
our tackles were either not prepared, or not ready to handle Georgia's speed and power. the film doesn't lie, and they were getting COOKED. Colt was running for his life, not literally, i mean really. we should have dropped someone to block for him in the backfield.
Georgia is tough, very tough, and they have the total package on D. our D was good, but we gave the ball up too many times and Georgia had really good field position most of the time.
live and learn, but our O-line did not grade out very well at all.
the sugar bowl managed to accomplish 2 things: 1) The BCS ranking system works. All season long, the warriors constantly challenged their BCS ranking, feeling entitled to more attention on the national stage. When they finally got that attention, and it was time to prove they could compete - they failed miserably. 2) There is no substitute for in college football, for a healthy recruiting budget. In the end, it all comes down to dollars. If Hawaii is going to compete, they need to start recruiting some big-time talent. Selling "Aloha" and "Ohana" to recruits will never attract talent equal to the likes of USC, Florida, Michigan, etc. In the end, it all comes down to money. The program needs to get serious about its funding going forward.
As a long-time NYC resident (born/raised HI), I know that "big-time" money doesn't necessarily get you a "big-time" team, e.g. the Yankees, and a team can be great one game and stink up the field the next, e.g. the Jets, Giants, etc. It's what you do over the long haul that counts--and the way you do it. So congratulations to the UH Warriors. What an incredible achievement. I cried last night but I have never been prouder. If what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, uh-oh, Florida better watch out. As for all the nasty posts--so what if Warrior fans were a bit naive? I was watching when the US Olympic Hockey Team iced the Russians on the way to Olympic gold in 1980. Yeah, you gotta believe. One final note: the Borough of Queens, NYC, is the most racially diverse in the world. Over 100 ethnicities living and working side by side. Like Hawaii, it's not always perfect, but it's pretty darn good. Lucky you live Hawaii, folks. It's 34 degrees here. But anticipating the 2008-9 Warrior season makes me warm inside. GO WARRIORS!!! Happy New Year!
...
and true, this will take us back to square one should jj leave.
the frustrations and lies have finally come to the point of no return.
so why isn't the governor, legislators, politicians, power brokers, and the president doing anything about this?
jj has made this football program our biggest marketing tool for all related businesses, tourism, and the like for the entire state. we are knocking on the door of opportunity.
are they going to allow jj to just walk away?
his pricetag is immeasurable. pay him his due.
his biggest beef is not about himself as far as compensation goes. its about fixing the broken parts to this program. he has been piecing all the broken mirrors up to now. this is as far as we can go given the current status.
this athletic director has done nothing to enhance our program. that is the major frustration for jj.
wake up everybody. even the best marriages have gone sour by remaining status quo.
remove the problems now. mcclain and frazier needs to go.
...nuff said
(well actually, it will never be "nuff said". i will continue to say it until the worm has turned.)
Although I'm happy for UH and their successfull regular season {against mediocore and less than mediocore competion},I'm also happy the bottom line has finally been revealed.UH was'nt playing the big time who're bigger,stronger,and faster. They probably could have competed better if June Junes had them step up their game with more physical training and better verbal motivation because Hawaii boys have heart to make up for the things metioned above. But he just took the same approach as he did against mediocore competition.And he aint as good as people praise him to be.If he was UH would be playing the best every year and be good.As for Colt Brennan he should've just kept his shut or say respectful things about Georgia.Not say things like we have the best recieving corps in the country hands down.His attitude is not a humble one like the media praises him to be.He always says things like that before a game.Even June Jones says things like Colt Brennan is the best football player in America.Now is that being humble and logical.Let's see now how much he loves Hawaii and if he stays here the rest of his career like people claim him to have done when he left the Pro ranks.He left San Diego because he probably was about to be let go due to their poor record.And one last thing for you all you fans and media who give Jones and Brennan more praise than you do God,football starts and ends with the offensive line period!
al...agree totally with your comments....something needs to be done now.
JJ is the program. He has built a loyal following. Like we were saying last season, HF should have pounced on the success last year and should have gotten the ball rolling early on to get things accomplished...He didn't, but there is still time...people are willing to make a difference for the University....all the powers that be at UH have to do is get off there duffs and start working on it. Talk is cheap. Actions speak louder than words and right now the UH is deafeningly silent.....
There is too much emphasis on winning and losing. Too much, point fingers and blame. If you measure success by winning and losing, you have missed the total picture. Sure they are programs who have huge budgets to spend on recruting and they are some who don't have that luxury. It all comes down to what purpose do they attend school. Right, to get an education. Some go cause that's the only way they can afford to go to school. Remember they are student athletes, not athletes who are students. IF they are, they will fall off the far end and end up no where.
I just wonder how much of those big schools recruit illegally because they have dishonest alumni or only win on there minds. Think about it, no need to think, they are alot of schools who looks at the Win at any cost.
They got other things like mending potholes and broken water mains on their minds. People will not like raising taxes. Students will grumble about raised tuition. Like many others, I don't care about the negative remarks or the "shoulda, coulda and woulda's" that we may think should have been done to win. Blah, blah, blah. So what? We didn't win. But what we (the people of Hawai'i and the Warriors) did win was perseverence, pride and strength. Perseverence whether you win or lose to get back up and dust yourself off and move on. Pride in the team, yourself and for others to stay united. Strength to overccome all obsticles TOGETHER and that should you fail, lean on me. The Warriors undefeated season prior to the sugar bowl was satisfaction in itself. In all of my short life of 35 years, watching UH football since I was a little girl, this season was the most memorable for me. You can't deny the fact that Hawai'i pride was strong as ever for our Warrior team support as well as the Aloha spirit that still lingers for the team and their triumphs thus far. The opening Hawai'i Warrior segment during the pregame made me cry and touched my heart which shall forever be emblazoned in my memories. All I can say to the Warriors is..Don't be discouraged or disappointed. You have shown the nation that Hawai'i is not all about Palm trees and beaches. You have shown what we are capable of and that with hard work, we shall over come. Trophies are nothing but material. I can't hold them. You can't hold them. But what we can hold, in our hearts is the inspiriation you have revived. Love you guys!
it's times like this when you raise your hands and say, 'WTF'. this isn't rocket science, it's very basic. we should let things remain status quo because '...that's just how those island folks do things....'; or how about this thought, '...it's only UH, nothing like the Olympics and trying to coordinate all of that..' hmmmmmm, what do you think.
i get frustrated when you have a second class manager trying to create a first class operation. just look at the mainland, that's right, LOOK AT THE MAINLAND.
our facilities compare to that of most High Schools. there are better facilities at the JC level, and the DIAA level. c'mon 'powers that be', who you trying to fool? when was the last time the BOR, chancellors or anyone in the 'upper echelon' walked in the locker rooms, training rooms, meeting roooms, film rooms, offices, academic advisor rooms, tutor halls, dormitories, cafeterias....of some of the BIG programs?
and if they did, what did they bring back to the table from that experience?
we're asking our boyz to compete with the steak and potatoe boyz while we give them spam and rice....i am not knocking spam and rice, i'll eat that like everyone else.
BUT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT A DVISION 1A QUALITY PROGRAM....
that's the difference.
how much aloha does it take to buy a bag of groceries for our scholarship athletes?
how much aloha does it take to buy some soap for post practice showers?
how much aloha does it take to have a year round training table?
nuf already, going nutz at my desk.
al, bring the meds.....
I agree, 'self-autonomy' for the University is obviously not working. Repairs are not being done properly and on a timely basis -- for Hamilton to leak with the next heavy rainfal is incomprehensible. Multi-million dollar funding is loss due to poor follow through -- the Dobelle fiasco with a donor. Med school and Law School are all well and good but not at the expense of the core programs that make a university a quality University and lifetime experience.
The athletic department needs an adminstrative staff that will fight and lobby for every penny it can get and not live in denial.
I used to visit the University several times a year before going to Japan, and then every chance I had when I visited from Japan. I visited a few times after I moved back in 94 and up into the mid-nineties, but stop going after 97 because the atmosphere, the buildings, the
whole environment was no longer inviting.
Jay,
The thing is...we need to keep up the volume until we know for certain that the monies that the football team has generated this season (particularly with the sugarbowl) will stay with the athletic program to address their needs first... AND only if there is anything left over should it go to upper campus.
15,000 local fans spent a whole lot of $$ to make the trip. 1,000's elsewhere did too. They did it to support the team and to demonstrate that UH can travel well. So that money should go to the Football program first, don't you think??
To those who have experienced racism here in Hawaii. I've experienced it on the mainland. It's everywhere as no place is perfect. There's always a few bad apples and it's never caused me to hate. It just makes me sad for the ignorance. I've lived here all my life and know the majority of people here are wonderful. You could never convince me that it's better somewhere else.
I've checked out a few other blogs and was shocked at the nastiness. Some bloggers curse and rip apart other teams. There's so much meanness that I stopped reading them and only stick to the Hawaii blogs. They are civil and so family oriented. They form friendships, talk about family members, food, etc. They're fun to read and not nasty like the others.
To all you haters out there, please go to another blog.
Yes, we warrior fans are sad today. We love our team and love the ride they took us on. Georgia is a great team and I congratulate them but one loss will not define us. It gets us more pumped up for next season!
Go warriors!
mih- I agree with you wholeheartedly. The football team got to the Sugar bowl, not the Chemistry department.
Therefore, the football program deserves the money!!!
What I'm talking about is getting the program at least comparable to other WAC facilities and then having money to keep it up in the long run.
Jay - The State get plenty $$$'s. The potholes on the State's highways are paid mostly by federal funds. Broken water mains are usually handled by the CC of Honolulu and the BWS. All UH Admin gotta do is just ask the Legislature. The Executive Branch would be foolish to not approve appropriations for the UH Athletic Departments.
As was mentioned earlier, a successful UH football team can bring millions of $$$'s into the State. If the UH Admin can get off their okole and work with the State Government then it can be a win-win situation.
Hawaii lost fairly with no help from the O-line and being shell shocked from the spot light. If they overcame these items, maybe the game and outcome would have been better.
Bottom line: 2007 is over and it's time to look at 2008. Renew JJ contract, make an investment for better buildings and practice fields, and learn from this season. Make this as a stepping stone to make this program better. None of this 'we did alright!' talk. Win a few more WAC titles, push for to have more donors (big or small) to all of UH (athletics & academics), stop the nickel & dime stuff with the state. By planning for the future, it will be a win-win for everyone.
There will always be that few unruly Hawaii fans that ruin it for the rest of the kind hearted devoted fans. I witnessed the rudeness of some Hawaii fans at a collegiate baseball game. When liquor is involved, it turns people into obnoxious people!
Overall, the people in Hawaii are the BEST in the world! Why do so many people want to go to Hawaii? It is the aloha spirit that makes Hawaii so special....
The "Ivory Towerists" are the main reason I left Hawai'i. I could not stand to watch the inept handling of, what seemed to me, simple problems.
Worse, it sometimes seemed the inept hired others more inept than they. Seemingly, all in a ploy to cover up the original error -- a simple and sincere apology would have sufficed to begin with. I guess somethings never change. Granted, it is like that here, too. But, the difference is people here are willing to do something about it rather than simply talk about it.
All it takes is one person. JJ showed the state what one person could do, Others quickly joined him. And, while it seems the foolish erected roadblocks and often obscured the goal they did nothing more than demonstrate how truly inept they actually are.
Will someone or another group now be willing take up the banner?
Comments on CMRicht:
He pulled the starters out between the 3rd and 4th quarters. He wanted his 2nd, 3rd, and scout team get a taste of the bowl. Think what would have happened if he left them in?
Going for the TD on 4th down towards the end of the game. The 3rd string QB that he used is already transfering to a smaller college. What if he went for the field goal instead?
CMR challenging the refs on that 4th down that messed your drive up. The refs reviewed it for 5 minutes. It was overturned. As the coach, he had an obligation to his own players.
CMR's smuggness? He really never shows any expression on his face. He looked like that before the game and after. You may have had your Warrior goggles on a liitle too tight on that one. He is a VERY humble person.
Anyway, I know it sucks because we been there PLENTY of times. I feel your pain.
Good luck to the Wariior Nation next year, and BEAT Florida.
A lot was said about the O line, but I think they did a very good job. The QB lines up 5 yds deep, has 2-3 seconds to make his decision and if you look at the O line, they did their job. Colt took a beating, not because of the O line, but because he didn't make his passes within the 2-3 seconds after snap. Tyler was on the money because he was within the 2-3 seconds. This is a talented O line and will be a force this coming season.
First off, who the heck is in charge of institutional advancement at UH? The success of the Warriors is a golden opportunity to raise funding not just for the football program but the school as well.
Secondly, come on now, people. The team was terrific last year, so how come they only sold out the last few home games this season? Those season tickets would help put soap and lot more into the program. I'll bet that Georgia has a waiting list for its season tickets and that their alumni dig deep to make sure the Bulldogs have what they need to compete at the top level.
Government can only do so much and most are stretched to the max to deliver the services people need. You want a more competitive team? First step, put okoles in every single seat in Aloha Stadium for every single game. Guarantee the elected officials will be looking at the numbers and thinking of potential voters when it comes to budget time.
For the OVERRATED gang, and for others down on UH, how can we be overrated if the higher ranked team won? This sarcastic cheer was intended to jeer the top dog when it is losing to a lesser foe.
HI was ranked 10th and, on paper. was supposed to lose. We lost. All that means to me is that the polls were accurate in ranking Georgia around 4th and HI around 10th. Nothing overrated about UH in my opinion.
You still have to love this team and the effort these guys gave.
Ya know what I think? I think that:
A,) We can have a top flight program. We have a Coach who is capable of shepparding us there, and as evidenced by the fans in NOLA, we have fans who WILL support the team. I for one am willing to do even more to support the team if I can be sure we will have JJ's leadership for years to come.
B.) The problem isn't just lower campus leadership, it's the upper campus, all the way to the president's office. The WHOLE UH system has been poorly managed as evidenced by the lack of funding for programs and facilities.
C.) UH has failed miserably in showing that it is capable of autonomy. How else would Manoa become such a morass of broken down facilities, underfunded new building and administrative ineptitude? The legislature needs to have control, because the autonomy concept has bred a whole new bureaucracy in Manoa fraught with indifference and arrogance. Has the university provided or responded to any of the requests made by Sen. Takai during the the legislative hearings with Herman Frazier et al last year? They don't even appear to be accountable to him, let alone boosters like ourselves. Rep. Takai virtually pleaded with them to ask for whatever funding they need because the state's robust economy and funding capacity. He was greeted with anger and defensivness, but have they asked for any money as per his request? No. The plight of JJ vis a vis funding to build a top flight program has apparently fallen on uncaring and disinterested ears. If the president won't respond to these and other issues, he needs to be removed, and control of the UH returned to the legislature. If he can't respond quickly to helping retain JJ, then it's time to act.
D.) Rep.Takai should begin action for the immediate redress of the above situations. If you are reading this, Rep. Takai, where do we meet with you? What can we do to help? Do we need to start holding signs and protesting outside of certain upper campus offices? (I would not like to do that, but that is prefferable to the status quo remaining at Manoa.) Please respond here if you can, Rep. Takai. We are interested in what your perspective is.
I hate to have to post things like this, but like many others here, it has been extremely frustrating watching the situation deteriorate as it has. What are we fans to do? Sit silently as adminitraive bureacracy destroys a potentially fantastic opportunity for UH athletics?
The silence and inaction from upper campus are maddening. If JJ is lost, we here won't forget.
Looking back at all the fun we had this past season, the Sugar Bowl cannot take away the fact that our Warriors accomplished a lot.
People, as a race, tend to want things others have and never really appreciate what they already have until after the fact.
We as fans have a lot to hold onto and a lot to look forward to and it's important that we never forget that losses are a part of winning.
I have enjoyed this past season with all the new friends I've made here as a result of the team's success and I look forward to continuing on as a fan to see what the future will bring.
The "ups" would never exist without the "downs".
We as fans, could never really express to the team what they have done for us and it is my hope that those guys do understand that we love them and we will always appreciate their sacrifices and dedication to this sport.
Catch 22 eh?
Filling the house would probably mean having to do away with pay-per-view against weaker conference and non-conference opponents. But that would also mean a greater loss of revenue for US as pay-per-view brings in more than those empty seats would.
SO, that would mean increasing season ticket prices by two-fold. Parking, too.
But the economy is turning a little sour, right now. This is evident in the State front-loading all the big jobs this coming year to help keep and generate jobs.
To nurture a solid fan base, you need a tradition of winning and a solid program to build on. We have that in our current coaching staff, but we do NOT have the facilities to back them up.
You can't put the cart before the horse. You need the program on solid ground before you can truly get the fan base.
In the end, filling the house may not be the source of $$$ that many speak about.
Getting to a BCS bowl every two - three years might.
The biggest screw up UH could make after the Warrior players worked so hard is to not invest that bowl money back into the football program (along with a competitive contract for JJ). As for their coach, I wouldn't say he did much different from what JJ would have done if in the same situation. We can't like everyone and we can't agree with everyone's play calling. With second and third string in, how much laying off should he do and to what degree does he cheat those players of showing what they have to offer. Imagine how great it feels for that 3rd string QB to get into the Sugar Bowl and be able to show the nation that he is deserving of being on a great football team too.
Maybe the Hawaii team should have spent more time practicing and less time learning their cute little "warrior" dance. I was embarrassed for you and your whole island, all the bravado and talk about being champions to go out and lay an egg on national tv. The WAC is a terrible conference, and compared to an elite SEC team - we all saw what happened. What do you think your record would be in the SEC? 5-7? Maybe, maybe worse. 6 teams in the SEC would go undefeated every single year in the WAC. Stay home next time and play a local high school team.
All I know is I will treasure this UH season for a while. The games brought together old friends and families. Without the games, I would have saw a lot less of my friends this year. We were standing outside in 20 degree weather grilling steak, chicken and other stuff. This is something we would not have done any other time this winter. Thanks Warriors for a great season.
Hi all!
Sorry everything is so late.
Well, it is dark and Ronnie has not been outside yet.
Uploaded more pix to SteveM who is hopefully asleep somewhere.
Merv is back in GA and dropping off his friends on the way home. I wish my boys had the chance to have a big brother like Merv in their lives. I'll let him speak for himself when he gets the chance, but suffice it to say that he is a true Tsai-ko and I was proud to hear him sing both fight songs and receive his nametag at the Sick Call. I wore his UGA beads to the game along with the UH beads.
BB- you-all are pure class and very knowledgeable. You understand what it takes to move up the various levels and your perspective is valuable because UGA has walked that path and has achieved a lot.
We noticed the rotation after the lead was set and your coach did what ours does in the same situation. Give the players game time. My personal thrill of the game was to hear the name of Kenny Estes on a special teams tackle. He is my neighbor boy from down the street who gave up his redshirt status at the end of the season when someone got injured. He rose to the call, played one game, got injured himself, but he played the Sugar Bowl special teams and got a tackle. WOW.
like i said earlier uh played a good game even though it didnt show in the score.. the only bad thing i have to say is about a player named Keenan Jones.. all i saw was him walking around after the hit on mikey henderson acting like he just made a game changing play.. i mean i understand that the game was still early but then you had mr jones still talking smack later in the game when he got flaged for holding.. i thought that he was a classes player.. other than that uh has the best fans and players.. i do not think that the late hit on rivers ( i think) late in the fourth quater was in any way dirty by us.. and one more thing i hope that uh and your fans know that georgia was not trying to run up the score late in the fourth by passing on 4th and goal.. we had are backup quaterback in the game as well as backup wr and a thrid string running back.. so please dont think that we were trying to run you guys into the ground.. uga does not play that way and mark richt would not let that happen.. well much love from bulldogg nation here in athens, ga and i hope the falcons grab colt he would help us out alot..
Don't fret guys and gals the Sugar Bowl was only the beginning. Yes, it would have been nice to have a closer game but UGA was simply the stronger team this year (I have a feeling that had this game been played at Aloha Stadium the outcome would have been different but that is inconsequential). The team played their heart out and I've got to tip my hat to all of them for acting with class even if Georgia chose not to. Winning is great but it ain't everything.. you can't be a true champion without tasting the bitterness of defeat fellas. This team will be back next year and they will be stronger!
If Hawaii was in the SEC, they'd have the recruiting budget to compete and coach Jones would still go undefeated because he has shown the ability to do more with less. Imagine how Hawaii would dominate the SEC if it were a member. Comparing the WAC to the SEC is very dificult because the disparate resources available.
Don't be embarrassed for UH or its fans. We aren't. We love our team. 12-1 is still the best record ever for the school. I'm proud of that. Your Georgia team is really good. I hope Hawaii has a chance to play them again. All of the fans that I met in person were really nice. You are obviously an exception to that rule.
I need to preface this with the fact that I am a Warrior fan for life, and have a lot of respect for the Georgia Bulldogs. They played lights out, and took care of business.
Now I'm going to put on my tin-foil/conspiracy theory hat:
Do you think JJ threw the game? I'm sure all of us asked at some point during the game, "Why can't we block Georgia's d-line?" JJ is too good of a coach to not make the adjustment, but we didn't.
Now, I don't mean to belittle the efforts of our boys, because I am nothing but proud of them for what they accomplished this season.
However, I see other comments in this blog by regulars hinting at my theory: JJ threw the game to make a point to the AD and BoR. Had we won, we would just maintain the status quo. If we can win on a shoestring budget, why invest more money into the program?
Both Colt and ESPN both had hands in airing our "dirty laundry" about our poor facilities, and nothing has happened since then. Oh wait, new soap dispensers were installed. Whoopie. How shame does the administration at upper campus need to feel before something is done? FOX did a great job by stating facts that we all know - our athletic dept. facilities are a joke compared to the big programs. Now the whole nation knows. Was that part of JJ's plan? He's said before his goals were to elevate the football program to the level of the "big boys." No can with the Fumbler at the helm, and the BoR handcuffing the Athletic Dept.
It takes money to make money...
I'm not trying to be a hater (we have enough of those today) but I share the frustration felt by many here. Why is it so clear to us what needs to be done, but the Upper Campus suits wander around blindly?
Geez, i think my blood pressure is through the roof right now, need to meditate, I should.
Da Punch Bowl Kid wrote
"UH has failed miserably in showing that it is capable of autonomy. How else would Manoa become such a morass of broken down facilities, underfunded new building and administrative ineptitude? The legislature needs to have control, because the autonomy concept has bred a whole new bureaucracy in Manoa fraught with indifference and arrogance."
There is a $200 milion dollar backlog of maintenance at Manoa and it has taken decades of underfunding by the Leg including Rep Takai to get it that way. This started way before the university got its so called autonomy.
If the Leg is so damned competent look at whole damned state, we build things but never maintain them. HELLO--look at the stadium, THE RUST BUCKET! Look at the Capitol, IT LEAKS! Look at the roads, THE POTHOLES! Our airport looks like it should be in Paraguay. Look at the schools. LEGALIZED CHILD ABUSE.
I want facilities that the football team can be proud of and I want a team that can go to the next level because they have a program behind them. I doubt we can pay JJ enough to stay if he doesn't have that sort of support. The man can't make magic forever. The state needs to invest in the facilties and recruitment and in respect for the team to make this happen.
BUT this isn't a professional football team. Those kids are going to have lives after they graduate and we need to invest in making sure they have an education. 60 year old labs and classrooms? An unairconditioned library with mildewed books that can send you to the hospital? Outdated equipment? Leaking roofs. Lucky the weather is good, but still a tough sell.
Great football teams have great universities behind them. You want one, you need both.
First we better find a way to keep JJ.
(and no I am not a UH administrator. I respect a few of them and think many of the rest are there only to steal oxygen from the rest of us).
Permalink 01/02/08 @ 15:10
Jay..
You are correct in that the alumni gotta step up as well and donate to both athletics and the university itself. The problem is that a lot of people are afraid to give to the university because of the ineptness of its administration.
We had a long discussion last season about stadiums, revenues, and other things. UH is about to (actually I believe they have already begun) embark on building a UH West Oahu at the cost of hundreds of millions of dollars. Granted this money is in the form of bonds, but how can you contemplate spending that kind of money on new facilities in West Oahu when you can't even maintain the flagship campus at Manoa? (I won't even get into the issues at UHH). Ask Jason, or anyone who has attended UH Manoa, the campus is basically falling apart. It was when I went there...and still is. Don't you think the money for West Oahu could be better spent upgrading and improving Manoa first? I mean, if I own a restaurant, doesn't it make sense to make it work first before expanding?
That's one of the problems with UH, and most government agencies. Build something, don't maintain it, than it falls into disrepair and probably costs less to rebuild the darn thing than to repair it.
Sorry for my rant but some things irritate me....
BTW, just a point of clarification but water mains and roads are mostly city issues...and boy do they have issues....
p.s. sen. takai now that you are home. you said you wanted to make a difference, well, ball is in your court.
Mark Takai is a member of the State House of Representatives and not a member of the State Senate.
Rep. Takai represents District 34 which includes Newtown, Waiau, Pearl City & Waimalu.
His State Capitol phone number is 586-8455, his office is in Room 305, and his e-mail address is reptakai@capitol.hawaii.gov.
Currently, Rep. Takai is neither Chair nor Vice Chair of any House Committee. He is a member of the Education, Health, Higher Education, Human Services & International Affairs Committees.
Rep. Takai, by the way, was the author and chief advocate for giving the University of Hawai`i greater autonomy in order to reduce the impact of the Legislature and the State Administration on the University's operations and management. I don't think he will change his mind on this.
reflecting on tsai's topic today...
those chicken skin moments will only happen in hawaii. those are just some of the reasons that may keep jj from going.
although it has not been mentioned yet...
i am sure that jj's toughest decisions will be his love for the players in the current program and his loyalty to his current coaching staff. going down the list of assistants, most of them are deep rooted in hawaii and would be out of a job. i am not sure if they would pick up and leave. even mac bought a home recently didn't he??
the but factor could really be a butt factor...
just that the sprinter no longer sprints. he takes too long to make a decision. is it a don't care attitude or not bright enough to make a proper decision in a timely manner.
Not making excuses for anyone, but Keenan Jones did look like he got partially pushed into the punt returner. The penalty on the play was kick catch interference and was not a personal foul penalty. #50 for Georgia on the other hand should have been kicked out of the game. Had the officials gotten the # correct on an ealier penelty, he would have been kicked out of the game for having 2 personal foul penelties.
Like I said, not making excuses for anyone, but sometimes emotions can get the best of everyone.
i am thinking if jj goes he will want to be able to draft colt as one of his conditions of employment.
However, just like some of the other posts, I hope you pound the Gators into the dirt next season (but dump #29 first; he is a jackass and he was an embarassment to the Warriors). I happened to be in Hawaii the week the bowl match-ups were announced and although I wore UGA shirts around town I only met friendly people that wanted to talk football. As for everybody piling on about the "haole" thing, let it go. There are racists everywhere (yes, even in my beloved Georgia) and my guess is most of them wouldn't even know how to turn on a computer so you are wasting your time attacking them here.
Actually don't think that far ahead.
Think "Spring Ball" first which is a few short months away!
Reply to "aloha my butt"~~
Hey brah, you get what you give. I'm haole, but 95% of my friends on the islands are Hawaiian and treat me like 'ohana. I've been taken to more baby lu'au and weddings of people I barely even know just because they tell me "you're one of us". I've been singled out by a well known Hawaiian singer onstage saying "this lady is more Hawaiian in spirit than most kama'aina". You get what you give. Treat people with respect and yes, with aloha, and you'll get it back. I love my Hawaiian friends like 'ohana and feel blessed to be so accepted.
Remember the old adage, "If you're not part of the solution, then you're part of the problem."
Now, that said~~~
Mahalo nui loa to the Warriors for an incredible season. You make us proud boys! So you didn't win the game, but you still won our hearts, our admiration, and our respect. Hold your heads high-- you earned it and we still love you all.
ʻAiea Sooner Fan: The reports are that the 49ers will keep Mike Nolan, but strip him of his GM duties. Rumor is Mike Martz is the top candidate to replace the soon-to-be-fired Jim Hostler.
BananaFish: Right, and risk injury to Colt? No, Georgia just beat us, plain and simple. No need to find excuses or conspiracies, they were just the superior team last night.
* * *
As for UH — I like the idea of autonomy, but it's clear the officials at UH are inept, and the bureaucracy is a mess. Things like Sinclair and Hamilton Libraries, Edmondson Hall, security — all those require money, and I'm not at all surprised that these issues have not been addressed. But there are other issues that don't need millions of dollars to address, yet they have been existing at UH for years.
When my friends that go to Mainland schools want to transfer to UH, they get virtually nothing out of transfer credits, forcing them to take many classes over again — how about some simple transfer credit reform? These people are usually coming back because it's too expensive for them to pay for college on the Mainland — how about helping them out, instead of making them re-take a year or two worth of classes?
And how about clearer standards when it comes to the more popular classes — with the Focus and Gen Ed requirements at UH, there are so many courses that everyone takes, like HWST 107 or Math 100. Yet the standards for these courses are not consistent between sections, and many of these Intro courses are often called "Killer" courses because they are insanely difficult. (Those that need to pass those courses go to the CCs, where they are a lot easier.) Something as basic as consistent curriculum standards needs to be done, but of course, nothing's going on.
tks for correcting me about takai's title as a reprensentative. i have met and chatted with him.
we all know his background with the inquiry earlier this year.
my frustration is that nothing has been done yet.
i am just hoping that he is not being asked to remain silent. the people are speaking out loudly throughout the state and from alumni all over the country. and yet, no voice is being heard from the upper campus.
is it apathy on their part or a lack of responsibility?
i bring these things up, in a somewhat exaggerated manner at times just to make my point.
i just want the truth.
i just want for people in control to get off their duffs and to make things happen.
i just don't want to see this laid back style squander another situation for us.
is that too much to ask?
To those who wanted Hawaii to lose because of the "anti-haole attitude" here
1) Racial prejudice happens everywhere (even in Georgia, where the grandfathers of at least 60% of the current footballers weren't allowed to attend UGa 50 years ago)
2) The European-Americans in Georgia better respect all the African-Americans for contributing to their great victory in the Sugar Bowl!
3)To that guy who celebrated the sack of Colt Brennan saying it was payback for the anti-haole prejudice he experienced in Hawaii
- Let's not forget that European-Americans like Coach June Jones, assistant coaches Dennis McKnight, Greg McMackin, Dan Morrison, and Rich Miano and players Colt Brennan, Jacob Patek, Dan Kelly, Tyler Graunke, etc. contributed a great deal to the great Hawaii football seasons!
For those mainlanders to celebrate every sack of European-American Colt Brennan for all the "anti-haole prejudice" they experience is sick.
And we in Hawaii also have to appreciate the contribution of European-Americans to our team. So even if you experienced prejudice from the "white man", remember the good European-American folks like June Jones and Colt Brennan
Maybe it's Hermans "small man" syndrome thats causing the delay in JJ's contract. Remember JJ said he ain't thinking about it till the end of the Sugar Bowl and now he's taking a week off in hiding. Hermans probably waiting for JJ to return to the coaches office so he can call him in to discuss the deal. No sense in talking with the middle man(agent) as its a waste of time since JJ's got the last say.
I wouldn't be surprised Hermans off island tending to other duties when JJ gets back.
You know with the 2008 Olympics around the corner, could it be the UH BORs are keeping Herman onboard to take advantage of his Olympic Committee ties? hmmmm, Complementary 2008 Olympic Passes comes to mind
all speculation of course
Michael,
It's not just K. Jones, but a lot of players these days. When a defensive player makes a simple tackle after giving up 10 yards and a first down, he jumps up and down like he just won the super bowl. As a former college player myself, I know the emotions that can be involved during a game. It's unfortunate that some carry it too far.
Whew.
Tough loss for our team, but I still believe. Of course, Georgia was far and away the superior team last night -- they put crushing pressure on our offense all night, and they've got some nifty, highly disciplined techniques (I mean, that swarm/hurry-up formation they did on a 3rd and 2 play which had our D off guard? Wow!). Congrats to their team for a dominant performance.
Maybe I'm a "homer" for thinking Hawaii made a _lot_ of mistakes to at least keep the game less close than it should've been, but there were some bright spots amidst the chaos. Mouton is also a big threat at kick returner (Lane/Wright-Jackson did great too), Graunke got invaluable playing time, Salas and Laumoli had their moments, and so on. I'm gonna conscientiously avoid all the Hawaii haters in the media waiting for an opportunity to slam the team (like that AP writer...make sure to identify yourselves the next time you check into a Waikiki hotel so the staff can stuff some extra hair in your sink, OK?), because (1) they're wrong, and (2) with a whole bunch of practice and some chips falling our way (JJ and Davone Bess staying, etc.), UH will field a strong team next year.
" Those season tickets would help put soap and lot more into the program. I'll bet that Georgia has a waiting list for its season tickets and that their alumni dig deep to make sure the Bulldogs have what they need to compete at the top level"
I think you are on to something.
Not gloating or disrespecting. Just telling it the way it is at UGA.
In order to get season tickets, a person must donate $400 per ticket. There is a point system in how much you have donated throughout the years etc that determines how good your seats will be, and also the availabilty for away games, SEC Champ tixs, Bowl tixs. then you have to buy the tickets. So basically, for me it cost about 1000 for 2 tickets for 6 home games or in other words 166/ticket. Then you have the big boy club level seating, and the super big boy sky boxes. EVERY game, 93,000 sold out since 2000. At the end of the day, just this, brings in 23,000,000 to the Club. You then have all of the marketing revenues, Nike contracts, bowl game revenues etc.
The player's receive whatever they need to give them EVERY possible advantage for victory.
Rising Waters and Capitolist,
If I am misinformed, so be it.
But the fact is, the University is about to lose one of it's best assets in the form of JJ. What does the legilature have to do with the lack of movement from the current administration at UH regarding facilities and JJ's contract. Mark Takai has admitted to helping UH to gain autonomy, but has said that he doesn't know if it was the right thing to do based on current problems there. Why hasn't the university responded to Rep. Takai's request for special funding request for the athletic department? You can deflect blame to the legislature or anyone else you want to. The fact is, JJ is about to leave and the UH administration hasn't shown any commitmment to keeping him. He wouldn't be talking to other programs if he felt that the UH would go to bat for the programs at UH. The fact is, something at the UH is broken and nobody seems to have the will or resolve to change things. I voice my opinions based on what I see and hear from a variety of sources. I haven't done anything to discourage JJ from remaining, the university has, so please don't try to bounce your ball into my court. As a taxpayer and UH alum, I have a right to ask questions. At the very least, there needs to be much more dialogue between the legislature and the UH if things are so bad. Given that, why hasn't the athletic department responded to Rep. Takai's request for special funding requests for the athletic department. That at least would be a start in fixing some of the problems there. You may have a point about past neglect on the part of the legislature, but that doesn't change the fact that something needs to change. Rather than spending your time challenging opinons here, why don't you guys just do something about the problems?
How come HF is gone so much? If he is not conducting UH business, he should be in Hawaii taking care of UH business. If he is too busy handling olympic and other business, maybe he should resign or be let go. It seems that UH and it's athletic department should be his first priority and not anything else.
I must say, special teams looked good yesterday. Except for the one long return by UGA, I think we outplayed them in that facet. Too bad we got outplayed on O and D.
Jason -
I was just kinda thinking out loud. I can't imagine JJ putting Colt's or any other player's safety and well-being in jeopardy to make a point. I guess I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that we couldn't get the offense clicking. JJ's the MAN in my eyes, so it gets my mind in a boggle that we couldn't find a way to stop the pass rush. Or at least slow it a little more.
At least we are still WAC champs!
2. Had to put 8 in box all day, if no can stop em no can win anyways.
3. Hermie still must go. Go back to ASU or wherevahs.
