Jones goes to SMU; Frazier will go away

As Ferd Lewis reports, Herman Frazier is going to be fired.
Ferd notes that Frazier was given the option of resigning or being fired. He chose to be fired, meaning he gets a year's salary as severance package.

* * *

Saying he is looking forward to the "next challenge," June Jones today accepted an offer to become SMU's head football coach.
Jones said it was an opportunity he could not refuse.
"I'll always love Hawai‘i," Jones said. "Hawai‘i will always be a part of me. But it's time to move on."
Jones said he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of e-mails and calls from UH supporters the past few days. He saie he broke down and cried at least six times.
He said he turned off his cell phone last night at his Dallas hotel, and prayed for a decision.
"I woke up with such a peace," he said, realizing he would accept the SMU job.
Jones said he is leaving behind a talented football team that should be competitive next season.
Jones will receive a five-year contract worth $2 million annually.
At least three of his assistants will join him at SMU — Greg McMackin, Dan Morrison and Wes Suan.
He has offered positions to all of his assistants at UH.
Jones returns to Hawai‘i tomorrow to fill out scholarship papers for the gray shirts who will join the Warriors for the 2008 spring semester.

* * *

Colt Brennan, who was stunned and saddened by Jones' announced departure, today recommended Norm Chow as the successor.
Brennan's best friend, Matt Leinart, played for Chow at USC, where Chow served as offensive coordinator. Brennan said Chow, who raised in Hawai‘i, brings the necessary appreciation of the islands to serve as the Warriors' head coach.
Chow currently is the Tennessee Titans' offensive coordinator.

Too late Regents.

Too late Herman

Only people who, from the start, knew what we needed to do is us fans, the reporters, Rep. Takai, and the coaches & players.

The rest, they can leave and or quit. The state of Hawai`i does not need you....and at this point, want you.

To the rest of the University...department heads...way to stand up for a brother in arms...NADA!

While I won't scream and shout for Herman's head, realizing he has to work within a slowly chugging along upper campus, I would like to hear him give his vision for what he thinks is the athletic departments' future - what his goals are. From what I see, it appears that the plan is to plug the holes in the dam one at a time, after they appear.

If JJ is gone, I wish him the best. I wonder though, what kind of coach will we get, given that it's taken SMU 10 weeks to get one, with all the stuff they have to offer? And when would he get him?

When is the press conference announced for the firing of Herman Frazier? Or will Carl Benson appear and back Herman on this one? This is one of the worst cases of complete and total negligence of professional duties of the highest degree... not to mention one of the most mind blowing cases of incompetence and complete and total lack of vision by one man in the history of human civilization. How in the hell was a contract not waiting after our last football game against Washington, that technically was the end of our regular season. How in the hell was a contract not ready at the beginning of this season! I don't want to hear Herman's spin or his side of it, because there are no more excuses for him. If he hasn't already, he's taken our football program and driven it straight into the ground. How do we just sit and take this one?

I've been reading posts all season from San Jose and have decided to wish June Jones the best. I got to go to three of the Warrior road games this year and the Nevada and San Jose St games were hard on the heart. The UNLV game was awesome just because of the fan support all over Vegas. Everyone needs to realize that June has to move on to another challenge because this will be as good as it gets for UH. If anything, the past two seasons have proven that a Non-BCS school will never play for the National Championship unless it goes undefeated 2 seasons in a row. The first undefeated season to build awareness/ publicity for a good ranking the next year and then the second season to run for the Championship. And although June Jones is not going to a BCS confernece I believe he gets a better chance at getting to a National Championship through SMU. SMU has a better record this year then Hawaii did when Jones took over. Good Luck June Jones...I'll be checking on the Mustangs next year.

I went to bed really believing JJ would be back.
Hopefully the 'Powers that Be' who finally made that last ditch effort have realized the importance of what JJ accomplished for the people, the State of Hawaii and the University. They will not back slide in finding JJ's replacement, and giving him what he needs to run a successful program.
Norm Chow, Kevin Gilbride are coaches who will
be able to recruit nationally and retain the foundation that JJ has created for the
Warriors. They will be able to take players to the next level. But you gotta fix whats broke.

Remember though, until the deal is signed there is still some hope, however small. Rally around the Warrior flag at 11am

This whole situation illustrates what's wrong with mainland transplants running the University of Hawaii. JJ might not have been born here but he is a perfect embodiment of the local kid with Aloha spirit. Someone willing to stay in Hawaii for less than he could get elsewhere, willing to make something out of nothing, all for the sake of improving some part of the state. But these mainland haole come in, see someone willing to stay for "cheap", and think they are taking advantage of some country bumpkin. The haole doesn't understand that a local kid will stay for less, but only expects some respect in return. When that respect isn't given, then everyone loses.

Get rid of the leadership that doesn't understand this important concept. Not just in sports, but in all areas of management.

Aloha Kakahiaka kakou- I admit that I am sometimes overly optimistic, but until I hear the news conference I am choosing to believe that JJ will stay- he has repeatedly said it is not about money and I think his vision is only half done. He has waved his magic wand and done wonders with our sons, now it is time to wave that magic wand and affect real change with the athletic facilities. THAT would result in a legacy which will stand forever.

I sent my email to JJ and it didn't bounce back; I have sent hard copy letters to UH admin;

As for those of you who are heart-broken (or pi--ed off)and no longer want to support UH, I would encourage you to re-think that- now, more than ever, our student athletes need your support. I spent the weekend watching the UH Men's Volleyball team- what a treat for me- a young team with lots of potential who really gave UCLA (ranked in top 5) a run for their money- Coach Wilton is another magic man! Coach Shoji was in the stands- another magic man! Chancellor Hinshaw was there- supporting the team, too. It was also wonderful to see Deidre Collins in the stands- a former Wahine stand-out.
{Of course the highlight was meeting Bro Mike who was reporting on the game :)}

Mahalo nui to Rep. Takai who has been so quick to respond and who shatters the notion of government moving slowly- if you STILL feel like you cannot support UH monetarily, then you might want to re-direct those funds to support pro-active Legislators like Rep. Takai so that we keep him, and others like him, in office!

I BELIEVE!

Thanks for rebuilding our program JJ. Good luck.

Hopefully this is a wake up call to all fans, especially the fair-weather ones. Read about SMU and it was the supporters that came up w/ the resources to better the program in cooperation with the administration. So people, next time UH calls you for donations, don't complain and fork it up. If everyone gave a little, we'd all have a lot.

I suspect those who didn't care before this year, won't care after this no matter how much they "show their support" for the program.

Quit calling for Frazier's head, there's plenty of blame to go around. And I'm sure there's going to be plenty of candidates in the next election willing to politicize this issue, so you can express your rage in the voting booth. You should all know by now that UH administrators are like the nine-headed hydra, you cut off one head (or one retires) and another grows to take its place. And no act like you knew JJ like he was your bruddah. He has "one snap and cleared" himself to the next destination.

Finally, hire Rich Miano as head coach or give him a prominent role in the new regime. He goes back to the Tomey years, he played in the NFL, and he, unlike some of the other assistants, doesn't seem tethered to June Jones. You say he doesn't have head coaching experience? Hey, this is Year Zero of a rebuilding process. Time to recalibrate.

Thanks to June Jones for the great job he has done.
We need now to place football and the athletic program at U.H. in perspective: what is the role of athletics at a university? The idea that we need a "big time" program is ludicrous. U.H. needs to upgrade facilities, all right: the facilities for its academic programs and physical plant. How many of the supporters of a big time football program have stepped foot on the campus recently? I dare say, very few. Also, to plan for a West Oahu campus and thereby diverting resources is wrong. If we cannot afford to pay for upgrading the Manoa campus, why do we need to pay for a new campus that will cost close to a billion dollars.

Say it isn't so! Pinch me and wake me up from this nightmare! Although it is too late to save June Jones, let us hope that the Powers that Be learn from this and get off their okoles and come through with their promises of change and improvement.

For the "true" fans of the Warrior program, we must continue to support the players by attending the games and showing them that we still love and support them. Let us not be the "fickle" fans that we are made out to be by the rest of the nation and show the Warriors that we BELIEVE in them no matter what and will be there to support them next season and beyond.

Now is the time, Hawaii, to stand together and continue to support our much loved Warriors! Here's to a fantastic 2008 season!

Go Warriors!!!

I second LizK's 7:07 post-

Rally today is FOR JJ; not the time to be against someone else (there will be time for that later- a second rally should be planned); Rally today is FOR improved facilities- which is what JJ wants for our sons.

BE POSITIVE!

As for JJ's post at 8:11- you are misinformed- read Miller's Warrior book about Coach JJ and the team. Coach JJ already demonstrated it is not about the money when he came here and turned down an NFL coaching job. In addition, money recently raised by supporters for his salary was given by him to his assistants!

Hawai'i is Coach JJ's home and coaching here is his dream come true. Having to face unimproved facilities for so many years, though, wears on you. It took Colt speaking out to get soap in the locker room, for goodness sake!

Von Appen was criticized for constantly complaining about the facilities (and the players); Coach JJ tried a different, quiet and effective, route to make changes- He did so with our sons- giving them second chances and building them UP- and NOW is the time when he finally has the platform to make changes to facilities with the BCS money and with increased fan support...but what have the discussions of UH admin been about? That decisions have not been made about how to spend the money; that Chancellor Hinshaw and AD Frazier will meet and discuss the distribution; that there are so many needs campus wide.

There should have been a statement by UH admin that the BCS money would be spent to improve the athletic facilites-knowing that in giving support THERE, the athletic programs will generate increased revenue which can then be used to address long-standing issues on the upper campus. That kind of support would have meant more to Coach JJ than anything else.

For anyone that says that Jones was in it for the money is wrong. I think Jones needed to take this job not because he was making more money, but because his assistants will finally get the raises they deserve. He and his assistants have sacrificed a lot over these nine years and done a lot with little. They now finally will get not only better pay, but better facilities and a strong commitment from a program that wants to win.

Though I wished Jones would return, part of me wanted Jones would take the position because maybe it will serve as a wake up call to the administration. Also I did not want him to come back to the possibility of the administration not following through.

I wish Jones the best and feel happy for him and any of his assistants that follow him to Dallas.

I hope the UH administration will wake up and go after money to help improve athletic facilities. I know that athletics isn't everything to a school and that upper campus shouldn't suffer, but the Athletic department does help out Upper Campus as well.

Again I wish Jones all the best. Though this is a low point right now, hopefully it will be the start of change.

Wake-up call for Hawaii!!!

Stop running this state on Hawaiian time!

The system needs to change immediately! The days of the nonchalant attitude are gone. We're screwed for the next several years becuase of Herman's incompetence. Herman should not be paid off to leave. idiot should be fired for breach of contract. In the days immediately following the Sugar Bowl, why wasn't Herman working on JJ contract? He was off to some meeting on the mainland discussing bowl games. There ain't going to be bowl games in Hawaii's future without JJ at the reigns.

How long will it take to get a replacement? Three months? Damn, now they have to post the position for ten days prior to conducting any interviews. National Letter of Intent day is the first week in February. UH has to hire someone from within the existing coaching staff. Cal Lee is the best bet at this stage. Hope he can retain Reinbold for recruiting purposes.

In summary, the powers that be at UH have fumbled on the goal line. Warriors were that close from breaking the plane into the upper echelons of college football. Now will be struggling to keep afloat from sinking into the Div 1AA status.

Sure won't be renewing my four season tickets this upcoming year! Bigger question to think about, who's next on the chopping block of UH coaches? Shoji? Hermies run off the big three, Jones, Wallace, and Goo! Someone needs to be held accountable for this blunder, Hermie is a sure bet. How about Hinshaw and McClain? Two biggest idiots who can't even keep tabs on the Lower Campus!

Damn, I'm pissed!

Mahalo to Coach Jones for all the hard work, selfless dedication and love he gave to UH and her loyal fans. Shame on UH and State admnistrations for allowing the the continual erroding of a potentially great Div I "football superpower" that was carried by men like Coach Jones and the players. With all the press that was recieved during the BCS run on the poor state of the UH Football facilities and no real efforts to change that, the folks in charge should be down right embarassed. Coach Jones saw the writing on the wall and once again sacrificed. This time he sacrifice was his love for the university, Hawai'i and its people to move on to where his character and leadership, that transend the playing field, will be appritiated. Aloha and good luck Coach Jones.

My thoughts when the blog server crashed:
AUWE AUWE AUWE

The blog server is ARRRRRGHHH!!!

That being said, WE BELIEVE. The story shall continue even though a chapter seems to have ended.

I pray the TSAI-KOS will focus on the KIDS and BEING THERE for THEM and leave the negativity to OTHERS.

I BELIEVE we can still make a difference - continue to encourage UH to ADDRESS THE DEPARTMENT NEEDS in JJ's 19 points. They still need to be considered, no matter WHO takes the coaching job.

I BELIEVE that JJ knew the chemistry with the powers that be would not change and that he sacrificed his own happiness and love for Hawaii for the kids' sake. Upper Campus could be perceived as making the necessary improvements as incentives to woo a new coach rather than losing a battle with an old coach.

AUWE that it came to this.

These thoughts are all IMHO, of course.

Now is the time to RALLY (11am) around our WARRIOR team
Now is not the time to fall into a depression about a return to the late 90's era.
Now is the time for us to make sure UH goes through with it's promise to upgrade the facilities.
Now is the time to make sure a coach is hired who can build on June Jones's legacy. Keep the Polynesian players coming.
He has left us with National recognition as a top tier WAC team.
Now is the time to make sure Hawaii finds a coach who will continue a spread offense, so we still get those late night exciting games on ESPN and catch the attention of the returning players and potential recruits.

Lets not dwell on the those upper campus folks, as we need them in this process. Hopefully HF will be marginalized because of this loss.
The energy that was created though out this Sugar Bowl season must be maintained. Now more than ever we need to do it for JUNE

Okay, one snap and clear. The budget issue is actually a political issue. Who decides how much funding the University gets? The legislature. Who decides how much the athletic department gets? The Board of Regents. Both decision making bodies are political entities. If we want to truly pick up the pieces, we have to continue to pressure them to make the proper budgetary moves that will lay the groundwork for a successful football team in the future. We really DO need better facilities. The assistants really DO need raises. We need more for recruiting. Our elected representatives need to know what we want and when we want it. June is gone. The next guy is going to need all the stuff that June was begging for. Based on his past failures, I think Frazier needs to go but I know that the root problem is deeper than the athletic director. Funding is the key. We can affect that through pressure on the legislature and the board.

Norm Chow would be a good canidate to take over at UH. But unlikely to leave the NFL. When he was offered the Kentucky job he said "no" citing family concerns, i.e.; they did not want to live in Kentucky. But then he took the Titans job. I have been to both states and they do not compare to Hawai'i at all as far a "living" conditions go. With that said, UH would have to make a real commitment to pay and facility wise to get a solid coach in here.

For those few bashing JJ...wake up. He did more for Hawaii than any govenor, politician, etc. I throw our illustrious Senators in da mix as well. Hawaii leadeship is generally clueless and out for #1.

A 50k recruiting budget? LOL! That is less than many families in HI spend for one year of college expenses for their keike on the mainland. 50k is less than our 'leaders' blow in kickback developer junkets to Vegas on a typical weekend.

We see the effects more clearly in Kona. We have been on the receiving end of the State and Hilo screw jobs for 30 years. Hanabusa telling folks last Friday that Hawaii needs to hang on till another wave of real estate speculation comes around. This is leadership?

Maybe we can hire another coach on the cheap that can do what JJ did in 9 years with nothing but his own hard work and commitment. Not!

Even after all his hard work and effort JJ couldn't keep da local boyz home to play football. Even the high schoollers and their parents have no faith in Hawaii and prefer to give their kids a chance to make something big on the mainland then come home with a few million stashed so they can live here w/o stressing too much.

We have to thank him for nine years of leading a great football program and for the impact he's had on the public. He has done so much for this program and the people of this state, those that live here and those that live abroad.

Today, we celebrate June Jones' tenure here, and we thank him for all he's done and wish him the best at SMU. Hopefully, he can rescue that program, and help shape young men's lives in Texas. I wish him nothing but God's blessings, him and his assistants.

JJ leaving stinks for only the way it was handled. If I was JJ, I would leave too. UH and the State needs to learn from this. UH Football needs the support it deserves, if we ever want to keep or get a good coach. I still think that JJ's list should be answered as a start to support the UH Football program. Lets not point fingers, and rally to get UH Football program to a first rate program.

If we get UH Football to a first rate program, may be could get JJ back if things don't work out at SMU, and our new coach does not work out. Lets think long term.

I think we should consider Norm Chow, Rich Miano, and Cal Lee as head coach. UH should hire someone immediately, and president of UH should take the lead in doing this with Na Koa providing the input.

SUPPORT JUNE JONES RALLY

/> MONDAY, JANUARY 7

Meet at the corner of Dole Street & University Avenue. We want to catch drivers going in all four directions.

There's lots of on-campus parking - hourly charge in the upper campus or $3 flat charge in the parking garage.

Please bring signs stating your support for June Jones.
Signs urging drivers to honk their horns in support would also be really great.

Please wear UH logowear or green or white shirts or tops.

Your children are particularly welcome. This will be a great opportunity to see how important citizen participation is in our lives.

Chancellor Hinshaw and the President McClain have already been/or will be invited along with all members of the State Legislature to meet with us.

The media have been alerted.

As Our Beloved Tsaimaster says, our message must demonstrate our love & appreciation to June Jones.

Please do NOT use this event to say or do anything negative against the University of Hawai`i or specific individuals. This is a golden opportunity to demonstrate our Aloha.

We folks in Hawai`i can do that better than anyone else in the world.

The sub-text of the message must be:

COACH JONES: We deeply appreciate what you have done over the past nine years. Your greatest gift to all of us is in working with young men to help them develop and focus on what's good and righteous within their souls.

There will be other opportunities & venues later on to express your concerns.

Herman is the obvious one to blame, and rightfully so. But a lot of us need to look either in the mirror or towards friends and family. We all had a great feeling this team would be special from the opening kick against Northern Colorado. Horrible schedule or not, how is it that lesss than 30,000 showed up for the season's first 4 games?
JJ kept talking about "commitment" from the administration. How about some "commitment" from those 20,000 or so of you who never bothered to show up early in the season? Anyone who went to the Easy saw what big-time fans are. We were a vocal minority, but nothing in comparison.
If we had packed Aloha stadium (or at least drew 40,000) consistently, I'm willing to bet it would never have come to this.

I find it a bit discomforting that we get no comments out of Herman Frazier. His silence does nothing to help his cause. But in his defense, he can only get so much money for the athletic program. The UH has a budget. Herman must fight for money just like all the other departments. Hamilton Library is in shambles. It needs money too. How do the mainland colleges do it? Not raise taxes. Boosters! The Boosters dictate where the money goes. The Boosters fund the athletic programs, not the state with higher taxes. It bothered me when the Boosters were taking pot shots at Herman on TV when the problem could lie directly with them. Maybe the Boosters need to do a better job at raising more money! Do you all know that in order to get Georgia season tickets, you must first make a significant donation to their boosters before you can purchase your tickets? And you thought our season ticket costs were high. Their stadium seats 95,000 people! Sold out every game. Aloha is rented by UH and only seats 50,000 and isn't sold out all the time. There is a difference people and until WE all decide we want to support the program, it will never become a big name program that will attract and keep big name coaches and players.

How many “outsiders” who are willing to embrace not only a community but an entire culture? I call JJ the Barry Flanagan (Hapa) of football. He is a rare individual who respects and honors all aspects of Hawaiian life. Good luck HF on finding such a candidate; as if you truly understand this concept at all.

Believe me there are many people on the island with the financial wherewithal to provide better facilities for the school. Many of these projects could have been funded either privately through pledges without extending the state budget. It is up to the President as well as the AD to actively promote these plans. All JJ wanted was the same commitment he was willing to give. Unfortunately, it was never reciprocated.

Well to all you bureaucrats who enjoyed the Big Easy, I hope it was good for you. As the saying goes, “You don’t know what you got ‘til it’s gone.”

Mahalo JJ for your dedication and hard work during your tenure.

You will always have a home in Hawai’i.

While the UH Admin and AD did there parts to help JJ out the door, there are still many things that can be done. If and when we get a new AD, it needs to be someone who can help raise the funds for all improvements. Notice, SMU is not paying JJ's new contract. It's the boosters. While the state does have some financially responsibility to upkeep things such as Cooke Field and basic necessities like soap, there needs to be an outside source of funds to help the program. You wonder how a lot of the "Big Schools" get all their nice stuff, they have AD's and Administration who know how to get alumni and boosters to donate money. A lot of times when schools get a new practice field and new stuff, it doesn't come from their state government, it comes from supporters of the program. Since Kent Untermann can find someone to donate money to but out HF's contract, maybe he can get that person to donate it to Na Koa so that it can be used to help suppliment the football budget. Just an idea.

Out of curiosity, is the new coach, whomever that may be, bound by the previous coach's scholarship offers? Obviously there will likely be some de-commits, but do incoming players who still have an interest have to worry about their scholarships?

What a disaster. Can't fire Herman now as that would delay finding a new coach even more. UH hasn't even begun a search presumably and it isn't like the folks in charge are well known for being proactive. If I were an incoming player I would be making phone calls right now to see who still had scholarships available.

dumbfounded, you bring up a good point...though moot now, and of course not to back HF, but didn't JJ state that he didn't want to negotiate a new contract during the season, yet stating to being open to such towards this season's end, etc.? what was/is JJ's word not only in this instance but overridingly? to be honest, i'm disappointed. very unfortunate for the UH football team, its assistant coaches, current players, and committed recruits and all of their families...not a reassuring day.

Very, very sad day. He took us as far as he could but could never generate the kind of support the program deserved. The administration needed to show the support by addressing Jones' concerns and the fans needed to come out to every single game.

The program can build on this momentum that Jones started. What has already been accomplished should be continued. June's departure will take some time to over come but the program will survive.

Norm Chow would be a fool to come and coach the Warriors under the current UH Administration. June will win games no matter what happens.......I wish I could say the same about UH. UH without Jones is like Destiny's Child without Beyonce, N'Sync without JT, and the Makaha Sons without Iz. The equation is simple: Money wins Championships. SMU will be in a BCS Bowl game in less than 5 years...why? Cause they are going to invest heavily in their program which includes their facilities, Coaching staff, and most importantly, their Players by way of recruiting. I would be shocked if Norm Chow even considers the job. Stuff needs to change at the top or the program will be right back in the Dark Ages. Coach Jones - I would wish you luck, but as everyone knows, you don't need luck to win, just Money and Talent. Aloha.

UH made last ditch efforts, but they were way too late - maybe if they listened to Jones 5 years ago, by now, the facilities would have been renovated, more money for coaching staff and recruiting - but it's too late. UH and the State and government in general always seems to have a reactive than proactive stance - they're not intuitive, they need to turn on their psychic eye so they can be 5 steps ahead of the game.

For Jones, it comes down to: honoring his highest good. And that means going somewhere where they are ready for him with the facilities, coaching budget, and huge support. He gotta do the best for himself and we cannot fault him for that.

I just hope that UH and the government takes this experience and LEARNS from it - most especially continue the momentum - do the renovations, get financial backing, get a new coach, build a better program. This is the perfect time like no other to do it. Stop running on the state mentality!!!

This is totally embarassing.

McClain, Hinshaw and Frazier should all be fired immediately. We need people with simple common sense directing the school and the athletic department's affairs.

Frazier's failings are consistent and well documented. He shouldn't even be allowed back on campus to collect his things.

If McClain and Hinshaw don't have the good sense to make sure that JJ, the school's most visible employee, is getting the support he needs, how can we be sure that they are steering the upper campus in the right direction? They need to be out by the end of the week.

Why does it take so long to meet certain request by the person who turned UH football around. From 0-12 to 12-0. . . This is just terrible. Now we're gonna lose all of the top notch recruits that we were getting and the UH football programs is going down the drain. How sad is the UH administration.

Props to JJ for showing the people of Hawaii how screwed up the UH system, and the State government is! They must think that they hired a complete idiot in JJ that he would not jump at the next and way better offer, to stay in Paradise - what fools!

So wake up Hawaii! and pay attention to whats happening in politics - if this is what it takes to make you vote and get involved then do it - because the government powers is who appoints the UH Board of Regents and **it rolls down hill - COME ON people! Wake up!

I am not a football fan typically, but wow! I never thought that a sport could wake up a State! And truthfully, I was rooting for the Bulldogs, and waiting to see if UH would prove their worth on a REAL stage - sorry, no bandwagons for me~ now the proof of the pudding will be NEXT season, way to go JJ - thanks for the blood, sweat, and tears - and God Bless!

This is a sad day for all of Hawaii. To come from an ultimate high to the lowest of lows. Originally from Hawaii, I now live in Dallas only 5 minutes from SMU. I'm sure I'll see JJ around this area. The sad part is that UH is back to where they started. I only hope and pray that UH gets their heads on right and do the right thing for the program. I would like to wish June Jones the very best at SMU. Their facilities is top notch and way better conditions than UH. Jones will turn SMU around like what he did in Hawaii but with more support from their athletic director. Thank you Warriors for a great season! I'm glad to experience this in my lifetime but only had wish that Jones didn't have to leave UH. To all the political figures and UH administration, I hope this teaches you a lesson. In order to keep your own, you have to keep them happy by working with them- that means better facilities and better pay for the hard work they deserve. Its a sad day for all of Hawaii- both in the islands AND in the mainland! :(

Let's try this again

SUPPORT JUNE JONES RALLY
11 am
MONDAY, JANUARY 7

It's almost hilarious, really!!!...NOW, UH is the last looking for a hd-fb coach.
Tell you what, I find it totally,(HF-inform). Nothing's changed, huh??!!
Now....how long is it going to take this idiot to find another hd coach? Not to mention the lost prospects.

Well, give this situation time to blow-over and it's back to the same old BS for the UH administrators and the governor, same-o-same-o.

Comment from: Die Hard Warrior on the Mainland [Visitor]
This is truly a sad day for UH Sports. As an alum and a die hard UH fan, it has been an amazing ride throughout the years. UH has grown from that small far-west school to a major player in NCAA Sports. Baseball, Volleyball, Basketball, and Football have journeyed the long road towards respect. The result of that respect, state tournaments and bowls that bring competition to Hawaii and increase its exposure on the mainland. And the added exposure brings in more revenue to Hawaii. With Coach Jones gone and the future of Hawaii Football looming, how long do you think it will be before we lose that extra exposure? Only time will tell if ESPN keeps the Hawaii Bowl here, especially if Hawaii is not in it year in and year out. We are already losing the Pro-Bowl, so what else is next?

UH is also looking bad, as this issue has hit the mainland hard with broadcasters on last night's Bowl Game commenting on the situation in Hawaii and why there is this departure. How can you compete and gain respect on a national level and garner the money from that if the Athletic Department isn't doing what it needs to insure its biggest money maker is taken care of. Leadership in the AD's Office needs to understand that what happens in the UH Football Program impacts Hawaii. Not just in terms of football, but in terms of overall economy. Football is the most visible program we have on a National Level, and by losing Coach Jones, the program is set back beyond 1999.

All we can do now is hope that the AD's Office, UH, and the the Hawaii Governement can work to make next year salvageable. We have good players returning and a fan base that will be supportive. We just need to hope the next steps are the right ones or ALL will be lost.

Good Luck Warriors for the '08 season.

Good Luck to the New Head Football Coach.

Good Luck Coach Jones. I hope you make SMU as good a program as you have UH.

For all of us Die Hard Fans, let's rally to support our team. They deserver our support for putting it up week in and week out over the past years. Next Year is a rebuilding year, which hopefully will help define the future of our program. We as fans need to step up to make next year one for the players!

Aloha

This was the BIG FISH that got away because upper level management or top level decision makers were stupid to think that "Paradise and Aloha" was going to keep June in Hawaii. All he wanted to do was to take care of the program he resurrected and to take care of the people that was part of it. UH/State of Hawaii's decision to not make an committment until the last minute will cost them. In the last 9-years, I've never seen State of Hawaii together like this before. Now that June will be gone, millions in tickets sales and marketing products will sharply decrease resulting in a decline in tax revenues for the State. UH/State of Hawaii will have to pull many rabbits out of their hats for this one.

He has only shown us how poor an administrator he is and took procrastination to an extreme in his latest failure. How much more damage can this inept administrator do besides an incomplete football schedule for 2007 until the last minute, hiring Coach Bob Nash when it was too late to recruit, and not having a contract ready when the Washington game ended???

Now having said that . . . Coach Jones, thank you for all you have done for UH football and making all of us BELIEVE. You are a truly gifted coach and SMU has struck gold. Jones is gone. He did a lot for our program...and for himself.

Whatever the reasons are, he is now gone. We thank him for his efforts - and he did a lot - but he is now off to satisfy his financial needs.

This leaves us in a horrible bind - thanks Frazier and Jones.

Promote from w/in - only if you plan to keep the same offense - hard to do with most of the off. assts. leaving. Who to look at - really only Reinbold.

Get someone outside - means a transition in offense and probably defense - although most def. assts. will probably stay.

Would be nice to keep as many assts. as possible - especially for the local aspect, but will be hard.

Program really leveraged - facilities blasted nationally, big contract numbers recently in the press, proximity, conference, etc.

Rock in a hard place - thanks Frazier and Jones.

As much as we appreciate what Jones has done for Hawaii, Hawaii has done a lot for him. Embracing his team and his vision.

I question his sincerity - at this pinnacle, he could have demanded a 1-yr agreement and changes or moved on.

Ultimately, he capitalized on the circumstances and took a great deal while he was hot.

Hawaii could not afford to have a top 15 paid coach. Not in our state, conference, etc.

Time to move on. Fans, this is when it counts...if you really care about the program (not the coach), then you need to go to games - we should have been sold out every game this season!

mjstc- Coach JJ said he did not want to negotiate his contract during the prep time for the Sugar Bowl- he didn't want the distraction to take away from prepping our sons for the game (but he called for the obvious white-out, over-riding UH admin's earlier call of a green-out).

He would have been open to negotiation earlier in the season- and why that wasn't done by UH admin is the million dollar question. Coach JJ had already proven himself to everyone- it was up to UH admin to initiate negotiations- not Coach JJ or his agent, Leigh- they both repeatedly said that Coach JJ loved it here; that his salary was not the issue but that the salaries of his assistants were an issue and that facilities needed improvement. IMHO, Coach JJ was banging his head against the wall for years, and his head was already bleeding- it became a matter of him needing to stop the bleeding for his own sake because continued banging wasn't doing anything but hurting himself.

Only best wishes for JJ. Now he doesn't have to deal with a do-nothing slacker bureaucracy that waited until the ball was on the goal line before mounting a defense. I hope SMU kicks butt next season. If I were a conspiracy-theorist I would say that the powers that be engineered all this to bring in their hand-picked chosen one who will go through the motions and not make waves. But that would be giving them too much credit.

Time to regroup. Only 34 weeks to the game with Florida and we have no coach and have lost staff. Given the glacial pace of the UH, who knows when a replacement will be in place. Talk about transitional--next season could be really painful.

More important than ever to support the team--Tyler and the rest of the boys are going to really need us now. We are their only stability. Don't care if they are playing PU from Podunk, Nowhere. Go and cheer as if it was the NC game with everything on the line. 'Cause when all you have left is dignity, it is.

I for one will not abandon our team. Lack of commitment from the UH and fans are the reasons Jones left. The stands got filled only during the last three games. I heard the disappointment in Jone’s voice last week when he mentioned that. Did you?

Commitment; from the UH -- AND FANS -- is what it will take to have a successful and long lasting program. Commitment is not something you practice only when things are going well. We must practice it all the time and this is one of those times. WE ARE THE WARRIORS! This is battle – you must respond!

NFL wont hire college coaches cause of Petrino. UH needs to hire locals only cause of Frazier.

Tsaiko's,
Now that JJ has made his decision.
Let's move forward and support our teams.
More than ever, UH athletics need us for support and guidance.
First of all, Although it's really stress relieving to go after Mr. Frazier.
I'd say "follow the money"?
I believe that Mr. Frazier is the fall guy or the punching bag in this debacle. (Of course he is now the most hated man in the Warrior nation)
The real culprits in this tragedy is President McClain and Chancellor Hinshaw. Why?
For whatever the reason, they did not want to give coach Jones, his due share of funds to improve his program.
Thus, Coach Jones decision to leave for SMU.
Now that Coach Jones is gone, they'll just wait till the public pressure dies out, they can keep the money as well as the Sugar Bowl money for Upper campus needs, and HF is conveniently the fall guy- to take the rap and get "released" from his job.

It is nice that HF's credibility is so bad that he makes for a perfect punching bag for the public. President McClain and Chancellor Hinshaw is laughing all the way to the bank. Killed two birds with one stone. Got rid of pesky Coach Jones, Used HF as a great shield to deflect the public outcry from them, and they have all the money to spend.

Not covering for HF, but there is a greater conspiracy at work here.

Remember, "Follow the Money"

Hard to believe that a week ago we were in New Orleans experiencing an event unlike any other in UH history...and today this. Perhaps things happen for a reason; let's hope so. With all the attention on the football program, and deservedly so, we cannot forget the neglect the other programs are also experiencing. Murakami Stadium is slowly rusting away with a scoreboard that hasn't worked properly for two seasons and restrooms in dire need of repair/maintenance. The track infield is embarassing.

Hopefully, this will wake up those responsible to get it done, or find new leadership who will.

Movin'On- Coach JJ did more for Hawai'i than Hawai'i did for him- he especially did more for UH than UH did for him.

As for those (jokingly, I hope) talking about getting rid of t-shirts and the Warrior book- Let's not take away what Coach JJ and the team did for us- that will stand forever- Let's not dismiss what Coach JJ faced and what miracles he produced- from 0-12 to 12-0 and the Sugar Bowl!

He has laid a strong foundation and UH admin already blew it by not doing what was necessary to keep him-let's not add to the pilikia by appearing to be fickle (which has always plagued us)and only supporting a winning team and a winning coach.

NOW is the time for us to go to the next level to continue the success which Coach JJ is leaving us, and call for / demand and put our money where our mouths are for improvements to the athletic facilities. Next, we need to support our next coach and give him time to get settled (a courtesy which should also, btw, be extended to Coach Nash- how quick people have been to turn on him already!)

But the problem is that there is no plan for succession. If we had a competent leader, we could salvage much, but if we had a competent leader we wouldn't be in this situation.

How long will it take hermie to advertise the position as per State law and get his crony uh, search crew together? Wanna bet that right now hermie is planning his "not my fault" speech rather than following a recovery plan such as the one Pride set forth yesterday?

Here's hoping that Dodds, Miyawaki, etc. just start the search already, pick a candidate, and then tell hermie who it's going to be.

Oregon State. I forget who else but that's okay. One day at a time. First order of business is to ensure that our government knows what we want. Second, get a new coach. Third, buy those season tickets. Football is a team sport. When one player goes down, go to the depth chart and keep hitting. Let's go Warriors!

Good luck JJ. It's very sad to see JJ go but now we need to move on. I wonder if there is any chance in getting Norm Chow. I think based on the makeup of the team he would do a good job especially since he has a lot of experience working with QBs and passing offenses. Maybe if by some miracle he comes here he could make UH look more like how he tuned up the USC offense.

And yet in order to consider SMU, JJ and Steinberg did contact UH/HF on 12/23 and /26, which were during the critical prep time leading up to the Sugar Bowl. it is amazing what total commitment to a program from billionaire donors to the regents, to the president, to a committed AD can do to a program in the basement of Conference USA, a conference bellow the WAC. imagine if we had that at anytime this season, or over the past nine years? This day never would have came. The what ifs are endless, the what nows are what are important.

1) we have to rally around our team, let them know we will support them next season. We have to keep our boys and our recruits if at all possible.

2) Deal with HF

3) Enforce the lesson learned at this dark hour upon our administration and athletic department. Are we a community committed to a top notch program? If we are then we still need to address JJs concerns

4) find a new coach and fast

perhaps jj leaving is his paving the way to the legacy that he rekindled, warrior football.

if anything, the ball is in mcclain's court to come up with a workable plan to improve, repair, renovate, and construct facilities comparable to other programs.

methinks that the athletic directorship needs a change to one with the work ethic, knowledge, and managerial skills to implement any change. most of all that person needs to have great vision. we need one who is not afraid to ask for help and be able to parlay the resources available to develop a viable product(s).

the new coach should have some "family ties" with the university. one who is of hawaii or has been here. keeping a number of the incumbent asst. coaches will also ease the pain of transition.

to me the two-three most critical guys are :

1) ron lee, if the run n shoot is to survive.

2) jeff reinebold, to maintain the recruting afloat

3) cal lee, to become the local recruiter.

4) rich miano, all of the above.

the safe person in all this is mel delaura since he is the only one not directly attached to the football program but rather to the athletic teams in general.

I have been trying to work with a few other posters on today's rally for the past days to get this thing going. All I have heard is we CAN'T do this and we CAN'T say that. I appreciate how the system works, but I also am a strong believer in Vocal Civic Action (i.e. John Lennon) and I got tired of TALKING yesterday and went to Kahala Mall with signs and the intent to promote a rally to try to retain June Jones. I was able to get the message of a rally out on all four news channels, and my husband and I laughed when they said "rally organizers..." (my husband was really mad that everyone on another blog made it sound like they were gonna show up with signs at Kahala Mall and we were the ONLY ones!)

Because it is now MY face that has been plastered all over TV I feel the need to share that, although I wish to stay "positive" at this rally, I believe that in order to move forward, Herman Frazier must go. This is not a personal attack on the man, it is what I believe must happen if there is any hope of our athletic department "moving forward".

I don't expect many to show up at the rally anymore, but I need to follow through now and my signs, which yesterday said "Support Success, Keep June Jones" and We Love June Jones, etc. now say:
"Nine Seasons Forward, One Backward Administration" and
"Keep June's Dream Alive, Support Change" and "The System is Broken, Fix It!"

Also, if the media does approach me (and the Star Bulletin already called me this morning), I will not shy away from the message that Herman Frazier needs to go.

I apologize if people do not agree with this, but my husband is quite upset that I even feel guilty and that I'm on the phone trying to explain myself to other's on the blog who have also been promoting the rally today.

Thank you for this venue and I respect all of your opinions. Thank you to True Green for his calm support and to Wassup Doc for what you are trying to do. POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!

I wish Coach Jones the very best. He brought the best out of our players, and he took us to the top of the mountain. He couldn't move the UH administration, but that doesn't mean we should stop trying.

Don't let the program slide back to the bottom. We can try and minimize the damage by affecting some changes. Let's make his departure a memorable one, if not for our sanity, then for the 2008 players.

Let's take care of business, and ensure that Jones' legacy is here to stay. Voices of the community united in a single cause can be powerful.

In response to the comment about purchasing season tickets to show support... not everyone can afford it. I'm surprised that the yellow section seats are the same price as the orange section seats. I know numerous fans prefer the red section, but maybe they should lower the price for yellow-tier seats so that more people can experience footballs games in person.

As an SMU alumnus, and being born and raised in Honolulu, this is a great situation for me.
But it does sadden me to see UH not be able to realize that if you want to play with the big dogs, you need to act like a big dog. For too long the inept UH administration has behaved like a Junior Varsity operation. Na Koa should be putting a hell of a lot more pressure on the school for not locking up June last season.
So NOW the school is going to put more into the facilities? Like others have said, too late on this one. If the school really cares about the program, then they would have done it a long time ago.
Aloha Stadium holds fond memories of mine, but Gerald J Ford stadium is 100 times the facility, and the boulevard tailgating scene before games is tons better than the stadium parking lot.
Welcome Coach Jones, and I hope that other assistants follow and join your staff here in Dallas.

First off, when is Frazier going to be fired.

Next, I was very impressed with what Tyler Graunke said on the news the other day. He emerged as a new positive leader saying that he and a bunch of other guys are staying and that no matter what Coach Jones decided he believes that the UH Warriors wouldn't quit and would still play their hearts out for the fans. In my opinion, UH needs the fans more than ever to turn out for next year's schedule. I hope no matter what, the fans remain fans of the Warriors and not just the coach. Good luck and God's speed Graunke, I'll be rooting.

Thank you Coach Jones. I've enjoyed the past 9 years tremendously after the dark VonCr*ppen years. I'm in shock and saddened this day has come. I believe you were one of the few coaches who could take our program to unprecendented levels and you did.

UH will have to ante up big time if we want to get a coach of equal caliber. Coach Jones is the only head coach that cared more about his players and the program then his salary. Pal Eldredge was on the L&L show and said Norm Chow turned down the UCLA job because the pay was the same that he makes now. That's a lot of money for UH to come up with if we try to get Chow, who I see as the only other coach of Jones's caliber.

I support the players as always but if I renew my season tickets, those bastards at UH better not think I'm supporting them!

Aloha UH fans. I am a Dallas resident who has followed UH football with great interest this year. Love the Warriors and the kind of football they play. That being said, Dallas radio and press are definitely reporting that SMU's facilities and financial commitments to the program were deciding factors in JJ's decision to come there. As I remember, Sugar Bowl announcers also mentioned in passing that JJ's office still had the same carpet as it did when he got there in '98, and some renovations still had not completed. That is a clear differentiator in the football marketplace, and as you probably know, Texas (for good or bad) tends to pull out all the stops when it comes to spending dollars on football. In addition, SMU is a sort of 'crown jewel' in the heart of Dallas - a VERY rich section of town which has had no football success since the Pony Express of the early '80's. So they have deep pockets for putting their chosen school back on the football map. I am sorry to see JJ leave Hawai'i, as I can see the enormous amount of good that he has done there, and the incredible emotional outpouring from the fans. But by not making an offer to re-sign JJ until this late date, and by not updating facilities (as so many on this blog have stated) in addition, UH effectively brought a knife to a gunfight.

Mikey- you really should consider reading Miller's book: "Hawai'i Warrior Football: A Story of Faith, Hope, and Redemption"
The title says it all- THAT is what Coach JJ did for Hawai'i- and for our football team...AND he provided the way for a lot of local boys to stay home and play for us... AND he provided the stepping stone for a lot of local boys to go to the NFL...AND he provided the state with the uplifting BELIEVE message, which brought us all together.

We all need to remember that although Coach JJ may be gone (for now), our sons are still here and we need to support them. We also need to remember that our assistant coaches are still here and we need to support them. Now is the time to BELIEVE more than ever!

Warrior Mojo- you should reconsider your attendance at the rally- it is now a tribute to Coach JJ and our team and is sending a LOUD message to UH admin- there will be ample opportunities to rally against the AD.

While I think that President McClain shares some of the blame for the current situation, let's not forget what he inherited. I also think he was letting the AD do his job. I do not think that Chancellor Hinshaw is to blame at all as she is too new, and let's not forget what she inherited.

Herman Frazier is a $250,00 embarrassment (after seeing that figure in black and white, he's proabably laughing all the way to the bank!). Hermie's gotta go. He should not be permitted to participate on the the impending "search committee."

Whoever the next coach is (Norm Chow would be great, but probably dreaming), fans must continue to support the team. The UH football program needs $$$. Selling tickets provides a funding stream. Real fans, as well as casual fans, need to buy season tickets. Don't give up on the team now.

Finally, it's a sad, sad day. The UH football team has brought tears to my eyes twice over the past nine years. The first time was when Coach Jones had his accident. The second time is today upon hearing he is leaving the program. Good luck Coach Jones. And thank you for the great memories.

I would've just respected him more if he stuck to his guns and mentioned the facilities and stuff being to little to late for UH. Unless UH did step up at the 11th hour and tried to comply with his 19 demands.

We'll have to wait till the post new conference interviews to find out the real deal I guess.

Aloha JJ.

Now it's time to move on. Who do we have on the short list?? I hope HF has one ready.

WOW!!!I can't beleive he took the SMU job. Did he have any other offers? SMU...WTF? are you kidding me I honestly thought he would come back and when he gets a better school maybe a BCS conference school to offer him a job he would go but to leave the WAC(Mid Major) to C-USA(Mid Major) seems OFF!! I think he took the 1st offer and ran.I mean c'mon didn't anyone feel funny about June's comments about Tim Tebow being a system QB leading up to the Heisman trophy presentation. Shit Florida is pissed at his comments they going take their anger out on us on opening day!! I don't think June would've made those comments if he was coming back next year!!! I truly Beleive he knew he wasn't coming back that's why he and Colt made US(the Public)aware of the the problems with the Facilities remember the no soap in the locker room that was seen all over the nation via ESPN! To me that was a test to the powers that be to FIX the problems and they didn't make and effort. Only now when June is about to leave they like make promises they going fix the facilities..Well they better cause no coach will come here in those conditions we lucky JJ took it for 9 years. I just wish he took the job in December it would've gave us more time to find a coach for recruiting. I know it probaly would have been a distraction leading up to the Sugar Bowl but maybe not UH would've still let him coach in the game like Loyd Carr did for Michigan. Now we are in a tough spot no Coach and the signing deadline for recruits is just around the corner. WOW!!! Now it's up to Herman Frazier to find us a coach Oh my god this will be worst than the 2007 scheduling debacle. I'll be praying for the returning players....oh and us fans too!!!!!

It's amazing what $10,000,000.00 will do.

Al, interesting post. I think you have planted the seeds for a quick fix. I'll expand on your thoughts.

1. Fire Frazier
2. Hire Riley as AD
3. Hire Tomey as coach with the understanding JR becomes defensive coordinator and Ron Lee takes over on offense. Presumably Tomey is recruiting WAC talent, so that may be some damage control in recruiting. This assumes Tomey would stick with the run and shoot, which makes sense since our talent isn't a good fit for another scheme.

By taking these actions, you hope Snipes and company remain interested, but I wouldn't count on it. Most of the mainland recruits this year were Texas boys, and they probably won't be coming out here now.

Shark -- I'm feeling the same way. Believe me, I don't really even want to think this, but -- how to put it diplomatically -- there's a disconnect between what Steinberg's recent comments and JJ's "I want to do what's best of my family" comments, which sound like a rather, well, "standard" reason for coaches and other folks to leave. Hopefully June IV, who I believe is the youngest of JJ's kids, will have a smooth transition to spending some time in Texas.

I'm just gonna concentrate on the good times and good things JJ's done. I'll save my questions for when we get more answers.

First of all, mahalo to Coach Jones for his years of service. His ability to turn a 3rd world football program into a football champion has transcends all expectations especially for me at least. And for that, we say mahalo..

Now, things needs to be changed at UH. This is definitely a wake up call. Cause now, the recruiting will/may hurt the football program. We may have some decommits.. Things to immediately address. Start to find a head coach. Coach Jones found something by appealing to locals, troubled and polynesian kids. We need a coach that will carrying on the same tradition but.. UH needs to take it a step further. UH needs a BIG NAME that will help recruting with local ties. NORM CHOW has NFL ties and probably has hook ups with USC as well. DUANE AKINA most definitely has his feelers in Texas. And you they have ballers there. DICK TOMEY past UH HC has connections in CA & TX. You know, I'm mentioning all these names but.. They won't be impressed with the facilities being that JJ addressed this issue. Tough job for HF. Good luck. They took JJ for granted.

MATT put it concisely when he said:
not making an offer to re-sign JJ until this late date, and by not updating facilities (as so many on this blog have stated) in addition, UH effectively brought a knife to a gunfight.

Board of Regents delayed in approving the wage increase (I hate to see the respective banks and petro company run in this fashion - i.e. three of the Regents are CEOs of their bank or head of a Petro. Company).

The AD, having gotten the approval, not hammering out a tentative proposal between the time of approval and the start of the season (about a month).

The President for passing the buck because of the love for "chain of command" to a Chancellor who was comparatively brand-new somewhat akin to a QB laterally the ball to a halfback who did not know the play.

The Governor for not stepping in sooner.

I suppose that the powers-that-be should name an interim coach while everything else gets sorted out. Will this be done "expeditiously"?

The Legislature should get on the stick and start getting those line items for improvement of the facilities and increase in wages done pronto - though this is akin to closing the barn door...

Pessimistic Believer, very nice post.

I'll add that it is NOT like this problem came out of nowhere. The big clue was the comments from Bowers, the hot qb recruit. He said he liked Hawaii but was inclined to follow Jones, and with the coaching situation up in the air (remember this was weeks ago), he'd hold off until Jones had made a decision.

You would think someone would have taken the action then, instead of three last minute counter-offers, promises, a rally, etc.

SMU almost assuredly takes off running with JJ and Bowers and the Katy qb.

To keep the backing behind the team and revenues making $$ we cant do something that would result in a back step so you better bring in the best you can and do the best job asap to improve facilities. the bottom line is ppl are not gonna back a program that is not quality, you may not like it but it is the truth. that being said if you do give a quality product the ppl will break their backs to support it, look at the sugarbowl attendance as well as the local media, political stiffs, interest in this situation. The powers that be neeeded to learn this lesson the hard way i guess..

mystc- I am not putting your comments down, I am just saying that UH had a loooonnnggg time to make the commitment to JJ which JJ had made to UH- Coach JJ's contract could have been negotiated a year ago- it could have been negotiated with a commitment to systematically address the athletic facilities which JJ had been talking about since he first arrived. He recently asked for new carpet- which is still the same carpet which was here when he got here. Why did he want new carpet? Not for himself, but so the new recruits would be met by new carpet!

It took Colt to speak out about the (lack of) soap! Thank goodness he had the intestinal fortitude to do so. He, too, wasn't speaking out to help himself, but to help the program. Only Colt could speak out like that; if another player had done so the whole state would have come down upon the player as a grumbler.

Tracy- I understand where you are coming from totally- We are ST/Bro Mike re-match and webcam buddies forever! There should be no time lag to at least name an interim coach, even if the bureaucracy takes a long time to name a permanent coach. This is a large part of why I left the DOE in 2005- at least UH does not have to deal with No Child Left Behind (No Teacher Left Standing)/the Feds on top of everything else...so there is a bright side to everything.

Now that JJ is truly gone, this is no time to let up. We have to use the anger generated by his loss to fuel forward momentum. Hold the slackers accountable. Hold their feet to the fire. Force the necessary changes. We may be down but we're not out.

So much for ranting.

Bureaucrats--elected, appointed, whatever--live by statistics, numbers. It's how they measure effectiveness and the size of their constituencies. How many season ticket holders are there? 22,000, 30,000 at most. That's not much. Maybe that's why the bureaucrats think they can throw the fans a bone by pretending to mount an 11th-hour last ditch effort to retain JJ. Then when the ruckus dies down, they go back to business as usual, confident that a group that small doesn't pose a serious threat.

Maybe JJ understood that even with his best efforts, the anemic, sporadic and quixotic support from the public meant that nothing would ever truly change. The bureacrats would do nothing; they didn't have to.

Like any great story.. this is a tragedy.
We go to the Sugar bowl, not really expecting to win, but to otherwise have a good enough showing that we could prove to the rest of the world that we can compete.

I don't think that happened, but it gave us some time to look forward to better things so we can continue to build on what we've accomplished. Sadly, things don't look as good. we are loosing a great leader who i still feel could have brought us to a hire plain. I feel had the administration met him and his staff half way with at least some of the facility changes we wouldn't be losing June.

It is also important to know that he may have felt he needed a new challenge as well. But now we are left with the sad reality that we are deep in the rebuilding process. All those prep stars who wanted to come to Hawaii may not want to come anymore because there is no Head Coach..

Hawaii football needs to succeed, it brings the community together.. It gives us something to talk about and look forward too. Its good for the economy.. This sucks.. Not a good way to get off to the New Year.

I hope this serves the UH Administration and Athletic Director a wake up call. We lost the best UH Football coach ever to date. I hope that during their selection for a new football coach, they follow up on the recommendations made by Jones. Those individuals can carry on the program where Jones left out and include fans in the hiring process. They also must start to improve facilities at the school before we lose another coach.

To Coach Jones, thank you for all that you have done for the Warrior football team, the fans and the state. We'll be rooting for you no matter where you are. Good luck at SMU.

Definitely a wake-up call to the UH Administration(upper campus) and the state government. It is amazing that few were able to grasp or guage the importance of the football program and what it truly meant to the state of Hawaii fans. I mean you got fans standing in line, for hours, trying to get a autograph from a college player.

It is important that those processes and mindsets that have slowed progress be changed. You don't have to lower academic standards but you do have to manage the althetics and infrastructure much better because it is important to this state. This is probably the only state that treats its sports (UH) on a similar level as a pro sport.

This is not the fault of one person but many who have differculties with people with vision that is different. Most people will want to blame Herman Fraizer. To a large degree, I feel sorry for him. When he was hired, he was mandated to balance the budget at all cost. I got the impression that this was the number one issue and nothing else really mattered. This is a tough task for anyone if you don't have people of vision around you. The cost of balancing the budget could have been done, and should have, while improving it facilities and status in Hawaii and throughout the US. I guess what I am saying is that you can have both(a balance budget & wonderful facilities, but everyone needs to be on the same page).

After a great season, this is not a favorable way of ending and it should never have been an option. Come on Hawaii...wakeup. You missed a great opportunity to capture a lot of donations...trust me, I know. I was ready to give a significant amount but I need to see what the vision is now.
I am not from Hawaii but I like what I saw the past couple of years but had no idea it was that bad.

We see the lesson in this, but will UH learn from it?

I'm rather doubtful.

Does that mean Cooke field will lay in waste ... is this what they will show the next prospective coach?

Commitment is something that has to be given by all of us, including the legislature, community, and administrators. That also applies for education and business. Maybe we should just be happy with our high school football.

Ok, the tears are done and I'm ready to move on. Just some observations, although it may be too soon for some to see:

1 - If June prayed for direction from God and got it, then, yes, he would be at peace. That's the way it works when you follow God's lead.

2 - Just because June was led to be here 9 years ago doesn't mean that he can't be led somewhere else now. That's how new chuches are started.

3 - Since I'm being biblical... Moses brought the people out of the land of Egypt, but he didn't lead them to the promised land. That was Joshua. Who will be our Joshua. I don't know, but I'm going to start praying about it right now!

4 - Who did we believe in? June, or his values, ethics, and style? Was he the team or the leader of the team? I believe in this team!

Ok, off my soap box now. I just hate when people say June didn't mean everything he said because he's moved on.

I just received an email from Kevin Kaplan, Exec. Dir. for June's foundation. It will continue to be based out of Hawaii, benefitting HUGS, Ronald McDonald House, etc.

June has made a difficult choice for this period of his life. I believe he made the right decsion. How many times can you bang your head against the wall before it starts to hurt? He did it for nine years.

The Warriors still have a lot of talent returning to the field. They will probably lose some commitments. The team will still have my support, as it did during the 0-12 season.

Thank you Coach Jones for an exhilerating journey.

As my own protest for next season, I will purchase and wear a SMU shirt in honor of June Jones at every home game I attend.

This is to show the idiots of Manoa a big mistake they made.

And I dont care what anyone thinks.

Success can hit them in the head, and still cannot nurture it.

It's official. JJ is on KGMB right now accepting the HC position. I wish him all the best. Thank you for a great ride! The words in his acceptance speech that caught my ear were "he could see SMU's committment to building a quality program" and he could see that everyone at SMU was on the same page. I think that says it all about why he left.

Now is the time to give the remaining coaches and returning players all of our support. Time to move on.

Rep. Takai, thank you for your quick support and involvement. How can we, the fans, make the UH Admin more accountable for this major blunder?

I have to say that watching JJ smile and laugh with the media in TX is quite a contrast to what I have to describe as perhaps disgust during his last days here.

It's sad that it had to come to this for the administration to realize how inept they are at doing their job. I do thing Frazier is for sure going to get fired or he will resign. This is the kind of bungle that ends up on national media. What a moron. But I agree with the poster who says that we need to look ahead now. Take it as a fact: we will lose recruits. We'll probably have a losing season for awhile, but heck...I don't think it will be anywhere as bad as when Von Appen was here. Get a coach here with Hawaii ties, somebody that we can embrace, with a system close to what JJ runs and pick up the pieces. The #1 thing to do is to get a good coach now with a strong staff and get a coach fast. Whatever McClain promised JJ for the facilities, let's hope he keeps his word regardless so that the new coach will have something to work with.

I’m not surprised by the turn of events of June Jones leaving UH. Like I’ve said in prior messages on this UH blog our UH athletic department is way behind in facilities and over finances for football and the other sports. Our UH Football team hasn’t had a practice field for rain conditions in over three years. Cooke field is a mess. Aloha Stadium is a mess too. UH football players not having the soap to shower which Colt Brennan spoke up about earlier in 2007. No state or UH leaders wanted to step up and make this situation better. Nobody seem to care. They have had nine years to clean up there act when they hired June Jones. I’m a former student and I‘ve said before in these blogs the sport facilities and resources is a lot worst now then it was when I was a student in the late 90’s. And believe me that’s not saying very much because it needed a lot of work back then in late 90‘s.

What this UH (12-1) football team did this year with what they had was remarkable! No Cooke field! Poor facilities! Very low budget compared many schools around the country! A incompetent AD Herman Frazier! It’s amazing that we did so great this year. Give a lot of credit to June Jones and his coaching staff and give a lot of credit to the football players on this team. These kids on this team are just awesome man! And lastly give credit to the diehard UH fans that showed great love and support for this years team.

Blame UH officials like AD Herman Frazier and other state leaders for not doing their job by taking care of Jones contract before the 2007 season started. What a 11-3 record in 2006 wasn’t enough to take care of Jones contract before this season? Seven winning season in nine years wasn’t enough either? And Frazier incompetence with the football schedule! Frazier Sugar Bowl ticket screw up! On my god UH never does the right thing! Please Fire Frazier! And somebody fix are UH athletic department it’s a mess.

re: Head Coach

UH should take a hard look at Mike Martz to coach the Warriors. He's in SF today interviewing for an OC position and lives in San Diego. His resume, as most know, includes two Super Bowls and an innovative NFL passing attack. His immediate name recognition helps ESPN and their viewership numbers and insures that Hawaii is at least considered by top high school quarterbacks and receivers. SFGate.com has a positive/negative Martz breakdown as it applies to the current 49er personnel.

That said, this 2007 Warrior ride was epic. Thanks Coach Jones.

I just watched the JJ SMU Press Conference...guess that I had to see it with my own eyes to truly believe. The underlying theme of his comments had to do with the commitment to winning and the feeling that everyone involved was "on the same page." As we all know, that was/is not the case at the UH.

Not too many comments specific to UH and Hawaii other than what's already been said/reported. He did mention that he intends to keep a recruiting pipieline to Hawaii and also maintain his camps in American Samoa.

Here's to holding out hope that the future will bring continuity to the Athletics Department and a commitment to sustaining a perennially successful program!

Ace...if UH was willing to address athletic facilites? That's a big 'if'- how has UH demonstrated a willingness to address athletic facilites in the last nine years? Coach JJ demonstrated more than his fair share of being patient.

DPK- I think it's important to rally in support of JJ and what he did and what he tried to do for the program, so that the need for efforts to be directed- immediately- to address the athletic facilities will still be kept on the front burner. There will be time for another rally to encourage the hiring of a new AD...but this rally- today-should be in tribute to Coach JJ.

Mitchell&Ness- Coach JJ did not leave us in a bad spot- the UH admin left us in a bad spot. Coach JJ's contract- with a commitment to upgrade athletic facilities- could have- and should have- been done a looonnnggg time ago!

Shark- I think Coach JJ stating his reason for leaving was his family was just another example of his class- he didn't need to kick UH on his way out by stating his reason was the lack of facilities- we all know what the real problem is- by stating the facilities as his real reason, it would just make it that much harder to get someone else in here- of course, the assistant coaches, whom I hope will be promoted, already know the problem with facilities and that is why it is even more important to promote from within so that our coaching does not become a revolving door- and so that the JJ message lives on- and to commit to the new coach that the facilities will be addressed in an expeditious manner- had that been done earlier we would not be where we are today!

Warrior- Who would call Coach JJ a quitter after 9 years? Who would call him a liar? Who would call him a faker?

Nu'uanuWarrior- There are other definitions of being a fan and a supporter than 'just' buying season tickets. We need everyone to be a supporter and fan and there are people who are fans and supporters who cannot afford season tickets- that does not make them any less a supporter and a fan- there is room for all of us to contribute in our own ways. Neighbor island supporters and fans don't usually buy season tickets because of the added airfare to attend games, but we do fly over as often as we can and attend the games when we can.

BowsForever- I would venture to guess that of all people, Coach JJ's players understand his decision and don't fault him for it. Coach JJ loves our sons- and they love him.

tommui- I thought that Rep Takai advised that he had made money available legislatively and UH never took him up on it. This is what is so crazy about this whole situation. I also understood that Rep Takai sponsored legislation that would make UH autonomous after so much complaining from UH admin that the legislature was too involved with the running of UH- so here we have an example of giving UH (some)of what they ask for, and what is done?

Kelley and others- thank you for your work to organize the rally- I wish I was still on O'ahu so that I could attend- it's just as important to attend today, given the currect circumstances, as it was important to attend yesterday. The issues before us are still the same- the issues which drove Coach JJ away. I am still hopeful that after 5 years he will come back here and retire here. I BELIEVE!

Aloha June, best of luck at SMU.
I have no doubt that the C-USA title will be yours in three years and a BCS bid in five.

Why do so many people think that Norm Chow will drop everything and become the UH coach?
Norm has already shown that he won't take just any college job, (see UCLA)why would he take a second tier program's offer and hope the admin will follow through on promises made to June.

Once June is safely away in Dallas, do we really think that the admin will follow through in the offers made to keep JJ?

Rep. Takai talked a good game a few months ago, but look at the final result, nothing changed.

Ron Lee & Cal Lee are both great coaches in their own way and should follow JJ to SMU, neither will be selected as head coach by Herman and most likely will not last long on the new coaches staff.

June Jones left the department with $3+ million in Sugar Bowl money. Let's pray they use that money on the athletics department. After all, they earned it, no thanks to Upper campus.

The Hawaii football program is at a crossroads. It can go through a regression period OR this may be an opportunity to make a BIG commitment to get an act together to go get that BIG NAME coach and to also get that commitment to have the program go through a renaissance. I think we are where SMU was a few years ago. The administration needs to follow the blue prints that SMU used to go and get that money to start. I'm not saying to get a new stadium but to go get the facilities. Only then you'll go and get the talent not only in players but in coaches as well.

When seeing the JJ press conference.. I couldn't help to notice that he kept on bringing up the commitment to take that next step. Obviously, he was basicaly saying that UH is NOT ready to take that next step. AND you what? He's right.. So who could blame him? If you're not happy where you work and with your bosses and not seeing anything done to better your company.. Hey, what do you expect.. You did what you can.. You took some duct tape, couple pieces of wire and made things happen.. But you cannot do it forever.. Make a stand UH, pull the trigger. Don't regress.. Go beyond..

What are you talking about, black brush? I'm the only optimist here, on SATURDAY, I started suggesting that you all prepare for this day by moving forward.

Lemme guess, you've never been flown somewhere to be recruited and wined and dined over the weekend. I have. When that happens, the deal is all but done. More importantly though, if you DON'T take the job, that kind of offer will never be extended to you again. AND your current bosses will hold it against you and make you miserable. THAT's why it was a done deal the minute he flew out there. The red carpet got rolled out and they took him. All that talk about changing his mind? Courtesy to the folks in Hawaii for nine years of paradise. Going forward? JJ is the enemy, he's going to recruit in the places he knows. He's going to try to succeed at UH's expense, so I think that ends the love fest and severs the ohana.

Squirmin Herman and Lackey's and Bosses has had how many years to adress problems?

What does it take to adress a couple of problems at a time. You eventually get all to of them in time, but at least there would be progress of some kind.

What they offered at the end again was promises. Who would believe them? I wouldn't!

What has been unfolding here is not Athletic Department problem, or University problem, but a Statewide problem. Face it this is how it is done in this STATE. The Old Boy Network is alive and thriving.
Micromanaging,Aloofness,Stubborness you name it it's there.

Now our problem is who is willing take up this mess now that our current coach given up in fustration? Who in their right mind would want to put up with this mess?

You could come in and complain like hell (Von Appen)
or you could you could come in and be quiet and effective and still nothing would be done...

Any suggestions on how to go about affecting change? We are really in trouble here! I personally don't have a clue except to continue to support the team.

All you people that have come on board the band wagon in the last two years should show your support by going to games or even buying season tickets if it is in your budget. The only losers are the ones that don't show up for the games. Win or lose I (we) support the team. We need to stand together...TOGETHER!!!

The people that have going to the games over the long haul are the people that I respect most...The fans on the neighbor islands no disrespect going to games is a problem...

The problem with this state is that at 20 -22 thousand core fans here, we just don't have the fan base to support a consistant top 25 program.
We need help from the Alum's
and the general public that cannot or will not go to games
to kokua in other ways...

Herman Fraizer needs to go and go now. June Jones may have had to sacrifice his home to give all of us a better place to live, by finding a way to get rid of Herman. I've never seen someone so inept at performing his job and still deny media accounts of the sad situation up at Manoa. For him to deny and defend the state of our facilities when the ESPN commentators made it a point to note was unconscionable. He is out of touch with reality and will not be able to lead the department. As AD one of his duties entails raising money for the department from both the Leg and Boosters. Let me tell you, he will not get any support from both groups. So Herman thanks for nothing. Pack your bags and leave, before you join Evan Dobelle the other idiot that hired you, as a pariah and all the dirt on you gets dug up and played out for the media.

Herman, You never got it and you never will. We need more people who care about Hawaii than care for themselves. Coach Jones was a one of a kind fit for Hawaii and gave us a lot. Thanks Coach for the great times and memories. Hopefully you'll leave us with an opportunity to turn this place around. So lets start by firing Herman! First order of business to get the football program back on track - FIRE HERMAN FRASIER!!! The UH athletic department will go rapidly downhill if he stays.

I wish you all the best and a successful first season as their Head Football Coach!!! It goes without saying that you will be remembered for everything you have done for the team and all of Hawaii.

JJ's gone forever or for at least 5 years. Done deal.

A huge loss.

In taking and taking without returning, UH has lost its golden goose in the athletic department. It's cash cow.

Sadly, with the SugarBowl money, HF will make budget and probably take home a huge bonus.

The real losers are the players and fans.

Fair weather fans? Who wouldn't be with the kind of support the admins give the program?

Good Luck Coach June Jones, hopefully SMU will take care of you better than the UH leadership has. You deserve it, thank you for what you've done for the University and the fans of Hawaii. You, along with this year's team gave us something to really unite and rally for this year. The support was evident on Bourbon St. - New Orleans, new year's eve, thousands of miles away from home. Hopefully this year's coach and team will keep somewhat if the same level as you brought this year.

herman said he didnt have enough time in july to work out a contract. how many offers were made this weekend? 2? 3? in a couple days. yet HF didn't have time in July? over a month before the season started. He took JJ for granted. UH balked on his requests on Sunday, then changed their mind at the 11th hour. they had 9 years to work on those things. after 9 years of quietly requesting improvements, and not being heard, anyone would be frustrated. JJ has too much class to blame HF and the athletic dpt's lack of action. the school wants a good program without investing any money. JJ worked below his market value. i dont see any other coach willing to invest their time in our program as JJ did. it's sad for the players who came thinking they would learn from JJ. too bad for Graunke. how loud does the people of Hawaii have to get in order to be heard? hire rich miano as interim or one of the assistants and fire the AD. he's not even hawaiian but is already demonstrating the laid back/lazy attitude (scheduling, hiring a BB coach, working out JJ's contract). How many chances does a guy get to do his job? good luck coach jones. thanks for the memories.

Good for JJ, bad for HU in the short-term. Can be worse if HF and current admin don't use lessons learned and stay true to commitment for improving UH athletics infrastructure.

Its a shame that it took the counter-offer to see laundry list of proposed improvements admin intended. Any decent D1 program with long-term planning would have these already scheduled and funded.

I give JJ full credit for trying to work for change in the [broken] system. Three things worried me this season -- the lack of a contract despite our AD's stated policy; the timing of the Believe book (like a farewell); and JJ giving the $100,000 raised for him to his staff (class act, btw).

Moving forward, our first focus needs to be in assuring the players and coaches who remain of our support. Our second needs to be getting a coach.

Several people have brought up really good questions, such as what the rules are about an interim coach, and what the status is of the coaches who don't leave *hint*, hope they are taken care of.

It's important to immediately fire Frazier. Not so much out of revenge or as a punishment, however appropriate that might be, but because we need to signal to potential coaches that they are not going to walk into the same situation that JJ is obviously running away from.

I'm sure Norm Chow would be a good choice as would some others including a few on staff. Its important line up our ducks so the the next coach CAN take it to the next level.

Normally when you leave a job for another opportunity, you don't burn bridges and if people are speculating why you left, you would squash the rumors before it runs rampant. I never once read or heard JJ protecting his AD from the vicious hits he is now taking if what is being printed is untrue. Too bad. To lose a respected coach and fire an inept AD really makes our program look pathetic.

However, that being said, Nebraska was tired of losing as well so they brought back Tom Osborn as AD on an interim basis to right the ship. Lets fire Frazier, bring back Yoshida or someone with respect on an interim basis as AD and hire a coach take us to the next level. There are plenty of good ones out there. Than lets get a good AD. These are exciting times and everyone is watching so lets not implode just because the world is expecting us to.

Its not what just occurred but importantly, the steps the university will take that will determine whether we are taken serious or not.

I'm sorry to see JJ leave, but I can understand how it could happen. He's taken an 0-12 program to 12-0. What more is there for him to prove? And no one at UH has done anything in the past 9 years to improve the lower campus. What makes anyone think JJ will hang around for more of the same BS? Thank you for the memories, June.

re:news SMU conference

In my opinion,Coach Jones looked very happy that he finally has a team,AD and Pres, both of whom seem very pleasant and whismical, along with a budget and facilities that rank in the top 25 nationally. The three of them
at the news conference you
can sense the bonding,already.

The SMU AD,Orsini,comes across
as being focused at what is at
stake.He very well spoken.
And seems as the type of person that boosters would
love to sit down and have a
drink with.

Coach Jones mentioned that
he will always have a special kinship for Hawaii.

When asked about the ride thru
campus.Coach Jones replied,
"unbelievable"

For UH football fans,the past
is the past...it's not a time
for retrogression.Some of our
biggest supporters,alumni and
leaders have to step forward.

Also it's a sad commentary on the state of how we all live here in Hawaii. Accepting high rents, food, etc, because of the "lucky you live Hawaii" mentality.
The money rolls up and never comes back down. People want to blame Fraizer but he's no different than any other front man, doing the bidding of the invisible ones. Mufi said the ball has always rested in the Lingle camp. The UH is a federally funded school, padding with military inflated contracts. There's always been enough money, just not for the public. Look at the shabby dorms they let the children live in. I looked at the SMU campus, it's pristine. You see what they value because they put their money where their mouth is, which allowed them to cherry pick our greatest asset, JJ. So maybe Dick Tomey will quite the unrest, but will the improvements be made, or is it business as usually?

More than likely, it is not only Herman Frazier that is to be blamed. I am defintely sure there is lot more High End Administrators you caused this situation. They should be all fired, starting from the Top. All of these Top End Executive want UH to be successful in Sports due to Revenue and Recognition but they do not want to provide the necessary support. This is very simple to do, if the Top End Executive do not want to provide the support, drop all the Major Sports at UH. They are always Budget Consciences so this would be the best thing to do. I always felt sorry for all of the UH Coaches because they are suppose to win or at least be competitive with the limited amount of resourses.

I just hope on January 18, there will be a press conference to announce a new head coach. One who will continue the work JJ started at UH and help take the team to the next level.

We must keep Jeff or R
rich as HC!
Boise State lost two good HC's but stuck with the plan and program.
They are a good model as a state school.
We can't match up with a private school like SMU in funding.
We still need to get the bulk of the skill positions filled by Mainland kids and keep the locals who can play at the just below top and top level.
Believe and carry forward!

I am angry that Jones is gone. Very Angry.

I am happy that it appears that Frazier will be gone in the next half hour. Hopefully they announce a respected person such as Jim Donovan, Riley Wallace or Hugh Yoshida is stepping in as an interim AD to lead the Football Coach search. That's what Nebraska did and it worked very well. If someone like Riley Wallace came in for a year or so it would settle things down, he knows the lay of the land in Manoa and then UH can search for a long-term AD on their own timeline.

I do not like the term, "we did the best we could do" from McClain though. You did not do the best you could do. These issues with Jones were all in the hands of the UH Administration. Herman Frazier reports to the Chancellor and the UH President so his failure is theirs as well.

Overall I am impressed with the candor and the responsibility taken by McClain. This is the first positive sign we've had. Hopefully more to come.

Sure Fraloser had years to fix UH, but so did Yoshida, don't metion that guy either. YOu want results bring in a winner like Riley Wallace. Bring in a person who cares and understands what is needed to improve UH. People don't think athletics are important for college...then look at how nice all the big time sports schools are and tell me there is no effect.

As with almost everyone, I was devastated to see JJ leave us for SMU. I had hoped all night JJ would stick it out with Hawaii, but the news of his departure felt like a stiff punch to my stomach. Best of luck to June Jones. He gave the team and the entire state a dream come true. He will be always welcomed back in Hawaii.

To the future, I hope HF gets canned quickly. I do not believe he holds the best interests of the school and the team in his heart. If the head coach position requires a ten-day posting period, then the position must be posted now, not tomorrow, now! If there is a way to circumvent the rules and shorten the hiring process, then it must be done quickly for the sake of the team, and for sake of UH athletics.

My hopes are with Riley Wallace or Dick Tomey to take over the AD office. Their hearts are with UH athletics and they have proven to be tireless workers.

Thank you June Jones for the wonderful memories. I am now especially thankful to my wife for allowing our family to bite the financial bullet to attend the Sugar Bowl. The experience was fantastic! Go Warriors! Best wishes, June. Thanks for the ride.

McClain's Statement:

My focus as your president is to keep the drama on the athletic field and in the stadium, where it belongs, and not at the ticket window, or in contract negotiations."

Weird and painful to listen to JJ chat up in the SMU press conference about his plans and being excited about all the support he's getting there.

Kept thinking it was similar to what it might be like to watch a divorced parent laugh and skip away with a brand new spouse and kids the very day the divorce papers came through. Or like watching your ex traipse through a big party showing off his flashy new girlfriend.

I think we all honestly wish JJ well. We realize that he has to put on an upbeat face for his new bosses/benefactors. No on-TV mourning allowed when someone's getting ready to pay you $10M.

But still, jeez, that hurt to watch.

Is there any legitimate word that Ferman Hrazier will be canned today?...I just seen a couple posters hint towards that...

Tony: When Coach JJ came to Hawai'i, he was all set to stay in the NFL- after the initial negotiations were all agreed to, he asked for his son's tuition and a couple of other things, which he didn't think they would come up with, and when they didn't, he would go to UH.

When what JJ asked for was given to him, he wrote a personal check for $10,000 to give to UH, because he felt he had wasted their money when they came to meet w/him- because he had then decided to stick to the NFL.

He only agreed to talk with UH even though he had already made his decision to stick with the NFL, because his agent, Leigh, reminded him that coaching Hawai'i had always been his dream. Then, while talking with UH, a member of Na Koa who was participating in the 'interview' asked JJ why he would even want to come to UH. It was then that Coach JJ began to realize that it was his destiny to come to UH and he turned down the NFL and the rest is history.

With all due respect to you, you are REALLY off base re: your assessment of Coach JJ.

I'm taking the liberty of reposting Pride's two posts from a few blogs back. We know hermie didn't do anything like Pride suggested, but hopefully someone in authority will see this now and follow up. These posts are too important and have too much wisdom to be lost. Pride, hope you don't mind.

I hope that the AD isn't sitting on his hands and waiting for a decision to come in from June's agent. He better be meeting with his staff and putting together the type qualifications that they will be looking for in the next candidate for head coach. Actually I hope that they did that last night.

Today they should be putting together a list of possible candidates for the job, with their names and phone numbers.

On Sunday they need to get together again and figure out the range of salaries that they would be willing to offer each of these individual candidates and their respective staffs.

Also within the plan should be the type of assistants that the AD believes that the head coach should have access to. OC with experience in a wide open passing attack. DC with a proven background and statistics that show his competence in scheme and player excecution. Several assistants that have a proven track record in recruiting certain geographical areas, obviously Hawaii, Samoa, California, and Texas.

The AD and his staff should be ready to spring into action once the decision comes down, one way or the other. Three plans should be ready to go by Sunday afternoon. If June goes. If June stays. If June wants to continue negotiating.

If June wants to continue negotiating, anticipate the next move and be ready with your counter-offer. Have your boosters ready to pledge more money to facilities if that's what you anticipate him asking for.

Don't sit and wait until Monday. Be ready to pull the trigger no matter what the decision is.
