Davone,

First of all I have enjoyed your work this past few years and I will never forget the comments made by a friend of mine in 2005 when he told me, "watch #7, he's going to be something"…

How true!

While I and many UH fans are a bit disappointed that you will be leaving us early, we cannot express our gratitude for what you and your teammates GAVE to us this year.

The memories will never die and I look forward to watching you on Sundays!

If I have one small request it would be to NEVER forget the Aloha sprit and PLEASE take it with you no matter where you go.

Aloha,
Kevin

As of now, if i were to run a 40, I would run a low 4.5 or a high 4.4. That's right now. I'm working at facility now to try to get that lower.
As for the next head coach, probably coach Mac. He's been around for a while. He's definitely a good candidate and a good guy.

Davone,
Thanks for what you did at UH and the state of Hawaii. Like all Hawaii-Pro connections, we will follow you in your carrier. Make us proud of you and just do your best. Don't have to be a superstar :) but just contribute to make a difference. You have a whole life in front of you and this is the beginning. One helpful suggestion: put yourself 30 or 40 yrs. down the road and ask yourself, "what would I have done to make my life better"? Find your answer and do it "today". "Taking action" will make a better life for you. I talk from experience.... I'm going to be 60 this year and this practice made me like who I am today. :)

Happy Trails :)

Brotherly Love,

I agree that we disagree with your point of view. Davonne is on an athletic scholarship that is "annually" renewable. It's not automatic and anyone with one could lose theirs, but a rare few get one to begin with. Davonne is one of those rare few and he has filled his obligations each year admirably. Asking for more isn't in the Aloha spirit.

For the most part, an athlete's career in football is rather short-lived. They need to make their move when they are at or near their peak.

I just hope, Davonne doesn't take as long as Joe Namath did to come back and finish his degree.

Hear me Davonne? Finish your degree! ;-)

We are real proud of you. We wish your the best in the future.

In this system, and in this business, being healthy and maintaining your health is one of the most important thing. I think coach Ron Lee will run the plays. I think Tyler will do a great job at commanding everybody and getting the team ready for Florida. Tyler's competitive. He shows it with action. Knowing Colt is gone and this is his show, he'll work hard and get the team motivated and put this stuff behind him.

Congrats on a great career here at UH!!! Wish you all the best as you take your game to the next level. Keep up with your great work ethic & you'll go far. We appreciate everything you gave on the field as a Warrior. I think the three of you (J Riv, GM & you) will get drafted. I hope CJ trains hard & the 4 of you puts up some impressive numbers at the pro day. Did you get invited to the NFL combine?

Yeah, I did.
Thank you for everything and being supportive.

I had a feeling before the season that you would turn pro after this season, and, after that AMAZING pro style catch in San Jose (you don't make that catch, I don't know if the team would comeback), I knew you were ready.

Good luck and best wishes in your pro career!!!

Can you give us some names of who you think should be our next receiving corps?

Greg Salas at the X. Mike Washington at the left slot. Aaron Bain at the right slot. Malcolm Lane at the Z.
They were our backups this year. We got to see them grow. They've learned a lot. They're hungry and they want it. I know our receiving corps worked hard and it paid off. I think they'll work hard.

Davone ~ Thanks for all the thrills, spills, and circus catches!

God has blessed you with amazing talent, and I for one will never forget what you have done as a *team* player.

- The blocking you provided for the other receivers were not only timely, but crushing!

- The exhibition of speed when needed to run away from those pesky defenders.

- The elusive moves you put on the corners.

- The resilience you showed by bouncing back up after a crunching blow.

- Your ability to hang on to the ball even when you were involved in a near-fatal, head-on collision.

- The sportsmanship you showed towards your opponents after those heavy hits.

- ...and damn the flags for flipping into the endzone. That's the enthusiasim college sports is supposed to celebrate!

One final moment that I'll never forget. That time in the endzone you reached up to shake the hands of the children who were witnesses to your TD in the Hawaii Bowl. You made those kids fans for life with that simple gesture...and then, you were gone. Grrrr...Zebras!

Mahalo Davone,

Our ohana is full of children (17 grandchildren, almost as many great-grandchildren) and they all admire the Warriors tremendously and cheered (with piercing screams, I might add) at every touchdown. They do know your name and Colt's name, among others! So please know you've set a tremendous example and inspired the next generation. Not to mention, you gave all of us "old" UH fans chicken-skin (and reason to shout) as well. We wish you were staying ... but we also wish you the very best of luck as you go and will watch your blossoming career with enthusiastic interest! You and the rest of this special team will always have a unique spot in our memories and our hearts. Go with our fondest aloha... -- The Nii Ohana

Samson returned for his senior year because he received a fourth-round grade as a guard. He moved to center, and suddenly he's a first-day player.
I've seen how much commitment Davone has poured into the program. He's always working out, even when he's banged up. He's played through many unreported injuries. In 2005, he was in pain every time he ran. He's played through turf toe. It was amazing he could even suit up for the Sugar Bowl because of some of his ailments.
So if a person has a chance to explore options, I'm all for it.

I'm talking all the way as far back as you can remember, including pop warner league. Specifically Kirk Morrison, Maurice Jones-Drew, Marshawn Lynch. With colt Brennan being an obvious answer in the future, name some past team mates (including prior to UH) who are already currently in the NFL you'd like to be reunited with on the playing field.

1st- mahalo for stopping by

2nd- you are loved by the entire state- Kaua'i people follow you and we rejoice in your victories-

3rd- as a former teacher, I hope you will consider finishing your degree- doing so will send such a loud message to kids- and you obviously take seriously your effect on the community by your willingness to give back-

4th- you will always be a Warrior and a member of the 'ohana and we look forward to hearing good things about you-

5th- mahalo nui loa for all you have given to us- your fans- we wish you weren't going (along with Ryan G-Ms) cuz, we just ADORE the dreadheads, but as 'ohana members we know we need to let you go and wish you well-

6th- please remember to try and give back to UH when you are able to do so- shout outs, shaka signs, and donations of time (clinics for youth) and money-AC Carter has done such a good job of this- as have many others- it's so important, as you well know, for local kids to see that you can make it (wherever- not just in pro sports) and to then give back to those who/which helped you to make it- kaleialoha- the circle of love/aloha- we especially look forward to you coming to God's Country- the garden island of Kaua'i, as our kids have even more limited opportunities than kids on O'ahu (same with all neighbor island kids)-

7th- Godspeed and good health to you- know that we will hold you in our hearts and prayers as you journey on!

meanwhile back at the farm...

stephen, realistically speaking...

one, are they going to name an interim coach today. some of the clues are that they waited to officially announce herman's departure and name carl clapp as the interim a.d. that seemed the protocol and prelude to carl clapp's first official business of naming an interim head coach to facilitate the day to day stuff.

two, obviously the next question is will they name lumpkin since he is the associate head coach and has done it in the past. also, would naming mac the interim hc now be conceived as pre-selecting.

three, realistically how soon can they name the coach. 5 day job announcement notice ends saturday. does the state process allow them to conduct interviews during the 5 day period or does it have to be done after the notice is done?

upon recommendation by the selection committee, assuming that there will be one, does the bor have to sign off on the selection? if so, is there a "cooling" period?

to make a long process short...how long will it take to have the head coach in place?

Davone Bess is a fine Warrior. He contemplated before JJ's leaving to go to the NFL. I wish him all the best, he deserves everything that's coming to him. We have a very deep core of capable receivers, I'm not worried one bit. But that's why it's even more important that McMackin becomes Coach. During the early part of the season, while our new offense is still somewhat learning, BigMac's D will be able to carry us, especially against Florida. You can count on BigMac to have really learned from Georgia and how to defend against an SEC offense. If he installs a tightend we would still have a four receiver set but with a better line.

Kazz- get ready to shave your head, brah- we can make it a CC event- Coach JJ is gonna do for SMU what he did for us-turn the program around; give local boys a chance and help them to shine; bring 'BELIEVE' philosophy to the players and get the entire state excited and supporting- the difference is that he will be doing it with a deserving salary and he will be doing it in already existing better facilities AND he won't have to wait six months to get safety gear for his players. Further, he will be appreciated not only by players and fans, but also by the SMU admin. Look at how they have already welcomed him and the school web site- I don't remember that kind of welcome when he came to Hawai'i nei- and he was returning home!

We all need to make sure that we treat the next HC -and also the faithful assistants who are so integral to our team- with the same kind of aloha that has been shown by SMU to JJ- we all made mistakes and now we have a chance to correct them- starting with UH admin on down to us fans. A winning team should not just be judged by the scores, IMHO

perhaps the 500k signing bonus was to be earmarked to cover his salary.

it seems steep but i guess "buyout" can work both ways it is in the contract. i guess the upper campus knew that herman's buyout would be paid by june.

does it look like he will get his year back?

while he waits could he participate in spring ball?

how many scholarships do we have or is compliance guy still figuring out last years?

some reports that we will take a huge cut in the number available this year. is this correct?

see, life goes on with or without jj.

Devone, best of luck at the combine and NFL. You are a true warrior to thrive at UH. We hope that you, RGM, JR, CJH, and CB do well in the NFL. Your success in the NFL will help build upon our claim that UH Football is a new pipeline to the NFL. If you are successful (with God's blessing you will), do you plan on giving back to UH Football when you can? Can you be another voice to push UH Athletics into what it should be? We need more voices like Colt's in 2007 to speak up for the players. How close are you to or what are your plans to graduate from UH?

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

So much to do since before Thanksgiving and how the days have blazed by. I know I have missed so much by not keeping up with the daily postings. Must admit that I was looking forward to re-living warm and fuzzy good feelings about our Sugar Bowl adventure only to have Coach Jones' bombshell announced resignation send our household reeling.

The females in the A-Household admittedly are having a harder time dealing with the upheaval that JJ's departure has created. The one thing that is bringing us a little sunshine and smiles to our faces is the anticipation of perhaps Coach McMackin being named as JJ's replacement. PLEEEAAASSSEEE! Let it happen.

Kazz -

Did you see us on Channel 9 10:00 news as we departed for the Sugar Bowl? We were so excited to have been asked to be interviewed that we didn't get our script down right.

Wanted to say..."Kazz, James, Koakane, Bulla, D1Shima, wish you could join us in NOLA!!" Instead, all we said was "Go Warriors!" and "We Believe"! That seemed to excite the tv crew and we passed the test since friends have said they saw the short clip.

Yes, Kazz... there is unbridled joy and happiness in A-House ville. Don't want to be too emotional, but A-House kept repeating...YESSS! YESSS! YESSS! as he pumped his fist in the air.

He had to work under HF, but did a lot of damage control, nobody ever heard of. According to McKnight, Clapp adheres to the policy of: it's amazing what one can accomplish if nobody cares who get's the credit.

My DC favorite would be Cal. Rich(and Lumpkin) had a crack at it to mixed reviews.
Cal holds T & G over Sun God. Plus he has experience of jumping in and giving support where needed in different areas. Saw him do it yearly at SLS. He would evaluate where the weakness was in his team every year and he would focus his support to that position; all to very good results obviously.

D1,

Speaking of... Interesting comment by BC this morning... If Coach Mac gets the UH deal, then wouldn't JJ pursue JR for his DC at "SMOOO"?

Logically since JR was heavily in the running for DC when Glanville left it doesn't seem that surprising.

I would hate to see JR go tho, or really any UH assistants right now.

Besides, if GMAC becomes our new head coach, why can't he also be the defensive coordinator at the same time?

JJ was pretty much our offensive coordinator.

Esme - (and also to ALL the other Tsaikos who gathered on that day)

What a joy to finally meet you and your husband at the NOLA Harrah's buffet lunch. Our great pictures of this happy gathering say more than a thousand words. One of the best is a pic of you holding your special "Colt" memento.

Brew808 -

I'm having difficulty remembering what you look like, since you spent much of the time talking to me with your cap in front of your face...nah, nah, just kidding.

Garret, Betty and Matsu Okamoto -

Such a joy to talk story with such genuinely nice folks like you. Not enough time to really get to know one another well, but still enough time to embrace one another as a new friend for life.

Pomai and Kuulei -

What a thrill to meet you for the first time! Hope you don't mind your picture posted on Steve M's website, since the rest of the Tsaikos want to see what you look like, too, I'm sure. Heartfelt mahalo for the "ono leis".

Colt and the rest of the UH Warrior football team -

We're so proud of you...despite the defeat at the Sugar Bowl, you played valiantly with courage and honor. All of you NEVER claimed to be anything you were not. You simply played your hardest and did your best to achieve victory. It was not to be on that day, but that in no way diminishes your achievement...you did what no other UH football team has ever achieved before...you brought the Warriors to a BCS bowl game and gave UH fans the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the grandness of being a part of BIG TIME FOOTBALL MADNESS! It is an unbelievably surreal experience we will never forget. With the departure of Coach Jones, we have our work cut out for us...keep the faith...continue to BELIEVE...we WILL build on this past miracle season...don't look back...IMUA WARRIORS!!

look time is of an essence so coach mac has to be HC i cant see how you can not have a drop off in the program any other way. now is recruiting time and we need to be as grounded as possible so we can sell the program to the players we are going after.
on a different note, i hope the powers @ UH and govt follows through and be committed as they need to be to keep the program thriving. dont mean to be hitting a negative chord repeatedly but we gotta do it, they gonna say what we want to hear, and in time they are gonna want to back to their own way of handling things, but we gotta keep our vigilance up so that they cant slip up. lets be clear bout one thing, HF could have been fired WITH CAUSE, shoot he did so much wrong but he would talk and alot higher ships would have sunk so the firing w/ a hush hush payoff was the choice made by UH.
We gotta stay on em ppl, politicians too they all knew what needed to be done there just wasnt enough motivation pushing them to do it.

Hire McMackin not only for Continuity but also for his Recruiting Skills. In 2000 he was named by Rivals.com the Big 12 Conference’s top recruiter along with being named one of the nation’s top coaches by American Football Magazine. (see his Bio). With limited recruiting budget we need a coorindator that can pull all the stops and get the Warriors SKILLED MAINLAND Talent! I love JJ for building his program around Local/Pacific Island kids but let’s be real. The lack of skilled players on the edge (O Tackles, D ends, R Backs) completely manifested itself in the Big Easy last week. If you want to make a claim you can play with the big boys you need to get “big time” boys. We can’t get left over Juco and 1 or 2 star rated players and think we can contend. I would like to see more African American Offensive Tackles, Defensive Ends, running backs etc. Texas Tech has been able to get recruiting “left overs” in the Big 12 from powerhouses Texas/A & M and Oklahoma and still able to contend in the conference. We have national appeal, let’s take advantage of it on the recruiting levels.

Hire Coach Mac and Salvage the recruiting season, or what’s left of it.

**We have less than a month before National Letter of Intent Signing Day on Feb. 8th.

I would seriously reconsider some of the offers we have to some of our local kids. This may be hard to swallow for some of us but it is the reality we must face.

Lots of times institutions may not have the stomach for a law suit even though there may be a good defense. And often you make a decision not to bring a law suit as it may cost more in legal fees than just paying the guy off. It becomes a business decision whether to spend the time and energy and money to undertake such a suit.

Of course if you fire someone for cause, it would be up to the employee to file suit.

Don't forget a lawsuit often takes a couple of years before it actually gets into court for trial. And during that period of time, you would have discovery proceedings - depositions, interrogatories, production of documents etc.

I admit the latest events have left me extremely angry, and I apologize if my comments yesterday upset anyone.

I was always ok with JJ's departure -- his contract was up and he owed us nothing. I have been upset about other things at UH, but there is more to the Frazier settlement than has been made public, so I'm more at peace with that.

If we can keep Mac and JR, along with the Lees, we have a chance to restore some order, although recruiting seems to have been turned upside down.

Oops forgot to add that I think it was reported that SMOOO would be willing to spend $2 million for JJ's assistants (totalling 9). so... at $2million divided up against 9 would mean each assistant could earn at least 222,000 a year, provided one doesn't get paid more than the other.

But could be the scenario of JJ looking out for the best interest of a friend in Coach Mac and saying to him: "hey, you could make it here and continue on for the better and get paid well doing so..." which is a kin to what JJ reportedly told Coach MAC when he left for Texas Tech.

If we can land and secure Coach MAC, JJ will no doubt have had a hand in that.

Comment from: AverageUHfan [Visitor]
FYI. UH posted the Head Football Coach ad today. The closing date is 1/15/08. This also is the earliest date UH can hire someone. Normally, they have to advertise the position for at least 10 working days but it looks like they got an exception to shorten it. Isn't it amazing when you have COMPETENT folks at the helm as compared to the three week posting period the Fumbler chose for the head basketball coach.

Lastly, it's allowable for UH to interview the candidates BEFORE the 1/15/08 closing date.

Let's pray they quickly hire someone good on 1/15/08 so we can salvage this recruiting season. I agree with ST that McMackin would be an excellent choice.

But somehow I think that makes too much sense for the folks at UH to understand.

Article on Tyler Graunke:

http://www.tucsoncitizen.com/daily/sports/73488.php

The Salpointe Catholic High graduate and projected starting quarterback next year at the University of Hawaii was out of the shadow of star Colt Brennan and poised to flourish in the pass-happy run-and-shoot offense of head coach June Jones.
That was until Monday's announcement that Jones and much of the Hawaii staff, including quarterbacks coach Dan Morrison, will leave to take over the Southern Methodist University football program in Dallas.

"It's a little disappointing," Graunke said from his Tucson home Monday. "I've been looking forward to (the opportunity to start again) since Colt took my spot. I knew I'd have one year left and in this offense, I knew it'd be a great year."
Graunke said Jones and Morrison were father figures to him and will be greatly missed for more than their coaching.

Still, he doesn't blame them for the move.

Graunke acknowledged that every possible scenario has entered his mind for his role next season.

"Who knows what kind of offense they'll bring in and who knows if whoever it is will want a guy with one year remaining to play?" Graunke asked. "But I'll be ready no matter what. If the choice comes down to who is the best quarterback for the team, then I know with my work ethic and the work I've already put in, I'll be the guy next year."

BTW, I am still working on incorporating your Christmas send-off pix and Hawaii Bowl shots into the photo pages. Interestingly, when 5-6 people send pictures of the same event, photos taken from different vantage points don't miss much and can tell a complete picture story once assembled.

Boy, I really do feel for Graunke -- with Colt coming back last year and JJ leaving this year. I hope good things will come to him.

Maybe I'm wrong, but another list of great accomplishment Fumbler can add to his list are the departures of SMU, Texas-El Paso, Tulsa, and Rice to C-USA. I remember Commiss Benson proposed the team league to sign an agreement for the schools to stay together. All but 3 schools decided not to sign including Hawaii (SMU, Naveda (i think), and Hawaii). Had Hawaii signed on we would have a better WAC. Thanks to Fumbler he didn't want to sign on, thus what we have now.

You guys are gonna laugh at me probably, but I'm mad at JJ all over again.

For some unknown reason — evidently I felt like torturing myself today — I felt compelled to re-read his foreword in "Hawaii Warrior Football."

It reads like he'd be here to the end, because he was called here by a higher power. Like he placed ohana and commitment and vision for this program above all else. There's an awful lot of "we" language in there. But he's no longer part of that "we." Does no one else feel even a little bit led on?

Yeah, yeah, I know, whining like a jilted lover. Yes, I read his full e-mail. Yes, I actually do understand all the reasons he went (that was me even defending his move to SMU yesterday in this blog). But I guess this is part of the loss/grieving process — the anger part.

I dare anyone to re-read that foreword and not come away feeling completely annoyed.

Esme,

I have not finished reading the book and I started with the forward to begin with and I jumped from one chapter to another in no particular order.

But yes, the overall sentiment was fitting considering the timing of the book's release, the situation we were in (climbing the polls, undefeated, coming back from behind to STAY undefeated, etc...) it was hard to imagine Warrior Football without him.

In fact if one wants to get technical, then JJ was "Warrior Football" (sans "Rainbow").

But what kept bothering me almost like someone looking over your shoulder was this icky feeling of "closure".

The mood in the book, the stories, and heck even the title could of easily led one to believe that this was the "swan song".

In all honesty I get picky about things like that.

Let me compare it to the "pre-mature goodbye".

This happened to me a lot in college.

-You'd see your friends at the lounge, have lunch, and head off to the next class or home for the day. You all shake hands and say "k-den"... Then what happens next? You end up walking to your car only to find that same person you just say bye to parked next to you. You just said "bye" wanna say it again?

Anyway... To me I'm not saying it was predetermined from a while ago, but who knows. The book was a nice way to wrap up a career, was it truly his main purpose?

If it wasn't, then it was a heck of a coincidence.

Since this all started last week, I placed the book away to finish at a much later time.

Step away from the ledge. We are in a new chapter of the Warrior story. It is kinda refreshing. JJ is history. No need to re-read the chapters of the past. The future looks good. Don't look down. Look up...and take a step back and enjoy!

I know exactly how you feel. Although I'll always appreciate JJ for the great work he did, I have to admit that when he left, a small part of me was pissed off. I hate to go there because I know the tide can turn and people can start getting angry (there's a fine line between love and hate) so I don't want to go there but I have to admit it. I've always admired him but seeing him with that SMU cap on was too much to stomach.

However if Coach Mac gets chosen and the remaining coaches continue on, I'll be pumped up for the new season.

Koakane,

I mentioned it earlier today.

Remember 1999? Coach Mac had the offer from Texas Tech for much more $$$ than here. JJ told him it would be in his (Coach MAC's) interest to move on there to a bigger program that can pay him well.

What was the sacrifice? JJ lost a friend and a DAMN GOOD defensive coordinator for the sake of looking out for Coach MAC's best interest.

JJ wasn't soley responsible for convincing Coach MAC to go but he gave him his "blessing".

NOW fast forward to the VERY near future and possibly the present.

What does Coach Mac make now? 100K plus? At the most right?

JJ is supposedly being given a $2 million budget at "SMOOOOO" for his assistant coaching positions, nine of them to be exact.

To divide up $2 million dollars between nine people anually does NOT equate to any single assistant making the kind of salary that Coach Mac stands to earn at UH as the Head Coach.

JJ knows this. JJ MUST know that Coach MAC will get a lot of support here.

Looking at this scenario, provided the stats about the salary budget for assistants at SMOOO is true, I cannot see JJ telling Coach MAC that it would be best for him to move to Dallas.

Yes, Coach Mac's family is in Texas, but he also loves it here in Hawaii and who's to say that his family won't be willing to re-locate.

But if history serves as a blue print for the future then JJ MAY be telling Coach MAC something along the lines of:

"You will get the support of boosters, players, and fans at UH.

You will get paid well and with the major public attention focused on facility upgrades and increasing pressure by administration to improve on these things, the future can be bright.

You already know a lot of these kids and they love and respect you. The current coaches love the fact that you work with their respective opinions.

The University of Hawaii needs you Greg.

I'd love to have you in Dallas, but I think we both can see the writing on the wall.

Take the Warriors to the top.

I believe this. I BELIEVE!

Esme – Sounds like you’re spouting green flames from your ears. Jilted is a good way of describing it for me. While his foreword makes for good reading (at least prior to this past Monday), it’s pretty obvious that it really just boiled down to a job.

We all feel like that in some way or another. We have great job, with excellent workplace relationships, feels like another *ohana* since we spend more time with these folks than our actual family. Even spill your guts to do what’s best for the organization. But when the job starts to suck….oh wells…see ya. Oh and getting a 150% raise from your next employer helps to soothe the separation pains.

You have a kid attending Ike? Think I saw you there before the break but wasn’t sure. Then I saw the same person in New Orleans with a Manoa Poi Pounders shirt. I’m thinking that can’t be a coincidence. But just in case, I never like make *a* so I didn’t say anything. Now I’m thinking that I should have just asked, “Are you a Tsaiko?”

He sneezes loudly and a flock of pidgeons gathered around Esme quickly departs in a flurry of flapping wings and feathers, nearly causing Esme to fall. "Ooops, gosh darnit I'm so sorry Esme! Now just come on down. We have so much to look forward to, the team's gonna be fine and you don't want to miss the showdown in the swamp next August. Besides you're young and beautiful and have your whole life in front of you."
Esme looks incredulously at DPK and says "What are you talking about, I'm just driying my hair out here. She takes a towel from around her neck and rubs her damp hair a few times. As she nimbly climbs back into the window she finishes by saying "My hair gets too dried out with a hairdryer, so I like to dry it in the wind out here." A few pidgeons fly back to the ledge, one of them landing on DPK's head, he sneezes again and the bird flies off, leaving a little deposit on his head. Esme would not be the only one wash her hair that day.*

Esme- no jumping allowed. Do I have to get my slippah???? Bwahaahahaha~

Kidding, of course. You like jump? Jump, den! But think about this first:

When two people get married, they plan on being together for a lifetime (well at least us OLD guys do).

In our faith, the marriage vow is: "We will all, verily, abide by the Will of God."

That creates a lifetime of discovery and adventure and becoming spiritual, as well as physical partners.

Divorce is really a horrible thing but again, is allowed- after a year of waiting and exhausting every possible means of reconciliation - if AVERSION exists and unity is impossible.

I don't think anyone plans to end up divorced when they feel so good about the person they are marrying, but sometimes it happens.

JJ probably was not planning to leave Hawaii when Miller chronicled the story of our football program, but something happened that made it impossible for JJ to stay.

I, for one, just have to let him go. Ke Akua knows what is in the hearts and will compensate and watch over those who believe and live accordingly.

In the end- it's all GOOD ;-)

Barry M – Hope you get this message….thanks much for the heads up about the autograph signings last night! I actually got to New Balance at 8:00 PM and the guys were coming out of the store already. Talked to CJ and Jacob, got them to sign our Sugar Bowl football and take a photo with my boy. They said the signing would continue at Dave & Busters with the rest of the West Hula Bowl squad.

We make our way across the street and there’s a line of 10 people for the autographs, with Vili just cruising at the front of the line. It’s free, the Hula Bowl folks are handing out free mini footballs that we used for all the non-Hawaii guys autographs…I’m thinking this sure beats standing in line for hours to get these same autographs (and did I mention it was free). In addition to CJ and Jacob, Herc, Amani and Karl were there to sign and take pictures with my boy…he was pretty excited (especially since we got more signatures on our Sugar Bowl ball…only had 3 from New Orleans – Colt, Josh Leonard, and Siave). Ok…I was pretty excited too.

Then these guys were just sitting around since there was no line (I guess that’s what no publicity will do). Chatted a bit with Karl asking him his thoughts on Coach Mac. He sounded surprised that Coach Mac wasn’t definitely going to TX. He then gushed about Coach Mac saying he’s an awesome coach and an even better person. Hearing it from one of his guys and seeing how Karl spoke about him convinced me that Coach Mac is a perfect fit for the players. If he’s deemed qualified for the other aspects of the job, then there’s no doubt he’s the best man for our next head coach.

Ok,

I believe the stages of grief over the loss of a loved one goes like this:

Denial: "no! can't be, he loves Hawaii".

Anger: "No! IT'S ALL ABOUT THE $$$$!!!" (see Cataluna)

Bargaining: "If JJ stays I will buy season tickets for the rest of my life..."

Depression: (pop in Na Leo's "If Are Friends Forever"...)

Acceptance: "COACH MAC FOR HEAD COACH!!!"

Now I experienced all of these over a 96-hour span, with the slight exception of the "anger" part as it was directed at HF and other things and I HONESTLY did make jokes with friends as it's my way of dealing with it...

I hope that the naming will be done expediously and that Mac gets the job!

all I can say is that the press is already bringing up the audit problems with McClain, so I figure the blood is in the water unless he wants to start paying attention to the team's future.

Folks seem to be closing ranks behind another Mc and it might be a good idea to give the team a future instead of wallowing in excuses and bureaucracy. The Leg opens in a few days and a wise man would not want to wade into those waters to talk budget without solving the head coach problem.

Like it or not, there are more than a few of us who feel UH should have a football team and if we have a football team it should be good and the team members deserve respect.

Maybe someday UH will believe that if it does something it should do it well or not do it at all.

JUNE JONES FOUNDATION TO STAY IN HAWAII

Aloha,

I am writing you today to offer my most heartfelt mahalo to the loyal fans of Warrior football and the many, many dear friends I have made during my nine-year tenure as head football coach. The amazing ride we all shared has been one of the most gratifying and enjoyable experiences of my life.

The decision to leave Hawai'i and my many friends has been incredibly difficult.

However, I will continue to visit these great islands whenever I can and hopefully will be able to retire in Hawai’i.

Please know that my heart will always be in Hawai'i. That is why I have decided to keep the June Jones Foundation based in Honolulu.

The Foundation will continue to support Hawaiian-based charities such as H.U.G.S., Friends of Hawai'i, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawai'i and Na Koa.

Among our most successful programs has been the creation of the Eo Na Toa, Eo Na Toa, E campaign, which has already raised nearly $50,000 through merchandise sales. All future proceeds will exclusively benefit Na Koa in support of UH Football.

Mahalo for supporting our outstanding student-athletes during our 12-0 regular season, Western Athletic Conference Championship, and our first-ever appearance in a Bowl Championship Series game, the 2008 Allstate Sugar Bowl.

I could not be more proud of our players and fans and firmly believe that the collegiate football excellence we have built together in Hawai’i will continue under the leadership of David McClain, Virginia Hinshaw and the Regents. My love for the Hawai’i Ohana runs deep and will always be part of me.

Warmest Mahalo,
June Jones

I am really happy about this!

Plus I really love that logo!

MAHALO JJ!!!

Long time lurker, first time poster. Like many here, found the past week difficult. When I heard the news about Coach Mac possibly being interested in the HC position, I sent the following email today to the UH Admin and Coach Mac:

President McClain, Chancellor Hinshaw, and Interim Athletic Director Clapp:

The circumstances surrounding the departure of Coach Jones has brought The University of Hawaii unwelcome national exposure regarding its facilities and a chaotic conclusion to the unprecedented and highly successful 2007 season.

However, if the media reports regarding Coach McMackin's interest in becoming the next head coach of the football program are true, The University of Hawaii has an opportunity to end the chaos of the past week and to continue the legacy of success established by Coach Jones.

It is no coincidence that the two WAC championship titles that Coach Jones attained during his nine years at The Unversity were when Coach McMackin was the defensive coordinator. I expect that The University of Hawaii can and will verify that Coach McMackin has the professional qualifications and personal qualities necessary to become the next head coach of the football program.

Certainly, The University of Hawaii is more than just the football program. And reasonable people understand the financial problems that hinder the entire university system. However, as anyone who 'witnessed' the drama of the 2007 season can attest, the football program brought The University of Hawaii and the State of Hawaii positive national exposure. Such exposure can help The University of Hawaii in realizing its mission to "emphasize Hawai‘i’s uniqueness as a Polynesian island society, and articulate the values of community and respect that island societies have to offer an increasingly interdependent world."

As an alumni of The University of Hawaii, I applaud President McClain's efforts to address the fundamental and systemic problems that were at the core of the issues that were raised by Coach Jones as noted in the media. While these efforts were ultimately unsuccessful in retaining Coach Jones, The University must maintain this committment as it hires the next coach. Hopefully, Coach McMackin will be that coach.

With respect,

***** (a graduate of The University of Hawaii/William M. Richardson School of Law)

Darren, great story about the autograph session. Like everyone else, I didn't know anything about it until Barry posted. I wanted to take my son, but couldn't arrange it. Oh well. Sounds like it would have been fun.

Esme, for me, I'm pretty much over the bitterness about JJ's departure, EXCEPT for the Sugar Bowl preparation. I'm still feeling the betrayal over that one and I probably always will.

Don't know if you guys caught the 6 o'clock news, but I was amazed and happy to hear that both Miano and Sungod withdrew their applications to be HC in favor of Mack. Sungod was stone cold RAVING about how good Mack would be. Very excited now.

Recruiting is dead until next week Thursday, I think it is. If Mack is hired next week Tuesday, he, the Lees, Miano and Sungod can still get some players before LOI day. Oooh, exciting!

I'm looking for a new love, baby
A new love

Hey everyone, just a few musings:

1- Is it just me, or is SteveM really in need of a life? Those roll calls of where everyone is from was old a year ago, yet it somehow gets posted every day. It is so last week.

2- My humble opinion is that although he contributed more than just about anyone, JJ became part of the problem by leaving, instead of part of the solution by staying.

3- with that said, I still don't blame him for leaving, because the politics at UH is enough to drive anyone insane.

4- naming Clapp as interim AD is a vertical move at best. Let's hope he and McNamara are on their way out too. Nobody here at UHAD likes either of them, or HF because of their inability to relate to local mentality or bridge the gap between it and their mainland ways.

5- its too bad that Frazier was the only one in the public eye. The rest of UH is held back by other inept leaders who enjoy the anonymity of less public scrutiny. Frazier was only one of many problems at UH.

6- Even with Graunke back next year, JJ's resignation results in a rebuilding year for '08. Recruiting alone is shot, and that is unfortunate after such a big year. Bess, Rivers and RGM leave gaping holes to fill.

7- The basketball teams are awful this year. It's painful to watch!

8- does anyone watch mens volleyball anymore?

9- IMHO, people are over reacting to JJ's resignation. He would have coached maybe 5-6 years more, tops. Then retired to Kona. He was not going to coach forever anyway.

10- Tsai rules!! The "other" paper started a blog, but can't hang with this one. It is not even close!

For Coach McMackin to stay in Hawaii in head coach, he would probably need JJ's blessing. Those two are very close. So, if he is hired, I think we can pretty much assume that JJ was for it as well. Part of his aloha.

McMackin is probably very well-informed as to what the 19 points were that JJ outlined and what UH and the State were willing to extend at the last minute. That puts him in a very good place to negotiate to get things done.

He certainly would bring continuity to the program and help keep the focus on facility improvements in the years to come.

I hope he decides to be an applicant.

I certainly did not feel this way just two days ago (I didn't jump, Esme, but I was doing cartwheels on the ledge). I really agree with those who say that June's departure was a sacrifice on his part in order to force the firing of HF. He would never say this, he is too good a man.

I believe that JJ will return to Hawaii 5 years from now and continue to support the program as a booster, sipping his favorite cocktail while sitting on his lanai in Kona, wooing potential donors in giving up the bucks for his friend Greg M's very successful football program.

He brought up the point that Colt came out in the national spotlight to bring up the deteriorating facilities and yet nothing was done. If he couldn't get anything changed, with the success of the team, nothing was going to get done soon.

Also mentions that GMac knows the offense. Mouse taught him the offense back at Oregon Tech.

Ok Tsaiko's, remember I'm just the messenger.

Dick Tomey was considered the savior of University of Hawaii football nearly 30 years ago. Now there is an increasing buzz on the Islands that the San Jose State coach is the best man to play that role again.

Tomey's name surfaced over the weekend as a potential candidate to replace Coach June Jones, who shocked UH fans and administrators when he accepted a five-year, $10 million deal from Southern Methodist University. The Tomey-to-Hawaii rumors intensified Tuesday after school officials bought out the contract of embattled athletic director Herman Frazier and it became clear Tomey might be more of a candidate for that position.

An extremely powerful Leahy & Leahy show with JR! He said that after JJ left there was such a void and to have continuity for the players & the program he put his name in for HC. Once he heard that Mac was going to give it a shot JR said that Mac is the guy that provides the continuity and will help the healing process.

He also said that he has been talking to the recruits and already gave them a heads up on what might have already happened. JR feels that if a decision is made by next week they can salvage the recruiting class. Any longer and kiss it good bye. I feel the death blow for UH football. Like JR said they have been recruiting for this system for 9 years now and the spread gives them the best chance for success.

Only time will tell if we can save the momentum and status built up so far. If UHAD screws up once again, possibility of maybe looking at downgrade to D2 in 5 to 7 years.

Older Leahy is endorsing Chow for the reason that he is local and has "big" name value. I like what JR had to say because it shows how much he cares about not only the program but also the players, community and even the future stars out there. I think for that reason we all need to take the stand and support MAC for HC. If anyone out there could as the Leahy's put it make the transition easier, he could. Really nice to see how his players and fellow coaches all have high praise for him.
As far as AD goes, do agree that Tomey would be a very good choice because he would be able to fund raise, something that HF didn't do. He also is respected in the community for what he has done for UH not only with football but the school as well.

I think Hinshaw is gonna make herself visable in the community and accessible to all.

Geez, only working six months and fall into this stupidity.
Guess she will do the right thing so it wont happen again.

I'll have faith in her, now we gotta believe in somebody to do this right.

No!!!!!!! Actually the rain and wind did arrive. We had sustained winds of 30+ with gusts over 75. Lots of downed trees and power lines (I do not know why they just did not bury the lines to begin with). Good thing the temps were up or we would have ended up like Spokane.

As it was we did get a light sprinkling of snow and a ton of ice the past few days. Only 5" stuck so that was a nice thing. The ice, though, was something else.

I think that was one of the few times I wished it had snowed -- would have been easier to drive and walk on rather than the bare ice and black ice.

Send the rain. Oh, and the warmer temps, too! You can keep the cold temps!!!

I hope you had a few waters for me! Diet Cokes (diet pepsi if absolutely have to) work too.

Esme, Kazz, et al,

That jilted lover feeling in me has susided, the shock is diminished and the fog in my mind is lifting to let the sunshine back in. The sunshine is coach McMackin and the automatic continuity and possibly even improvement that comes with it. The neurons in my brain are starting to reconnect and I can think about this whole situation a little clearer.

A few points here worth discussing : I believe JJ was on the verge of burnout, we all know the why, no need to go into it any further.

JJ is a builder, its in his DNA. He took Hawaii as far as he could with what he had and knew something drastic would have to happen to get to the next level. Loosing him would be the catalyst to set his cleansing fire in motion and it did.

Many things have happened in the last few days that are extremely positive. We, as a fan base, have grown up and found our common voice, thanks to the blog leader ST, a journalist of high integrity, who's voice we can trust at all times. From now on we will be heard and no longer brushed aside as the invisible people.

We're pushing the leadership of UH to take action and select a coach most of us like and respect very highly, assuring our program to not only survive, but thrive.

The promised improvements will take place, because we will keep the fire burning until it is done.

JJ found in SMU the very same situation as Hawaii was in, except the total commitment was there from the start. For a builder like JJ that was a siren call of the highest order. Would HF have been fired if JJ stayed? I doubt it. That last straw had to happen to get real action.

I have total confidence that McMackin will build a powerful program on JJ's foundation. Listen to ST. He said earlier that if he had to guess, they would hire McMackin early next week. Well, in my experience St's guesses are better than most peoples facts.

What I didn't like was the way JJ left. Our boys knew before the game that he was leaving and that MUST have sagged their spirits. I watched the game again, the offense was sleep walking and out of sync. BigMac's defense kept fighting like Warriors and soon held their own.

I've read on the SportsHawaii boards claims from 'inside' sources that BigMac has agreed to be the coach, but they can't anounce it until next week, just like ST's "guess". I have no idea how true that is.

I have to agree with Kazz and Esme, after rereading the forword from JJ, it really does sound like a swan song. I know now why I had this weird chill in my back as I was reading.

Anyway, after a horrible start to this year, things are looking very bright for our team and program and if anything, it brought us all closer together and made us even stronger as a community, with an actual voice in UH affairs. But in all this, let's not forget our other teams, who work just as hard to make us happy. Let's especially support Bob Nash, he has to play the hand dealt to him by Herman Frazier. He's finally gone, let's all sail together into a bright future.

a-house,

it was not i who posted this. i was looking for the same info as you as it made no sense to me either.

However, al(?) posted that applicants have to 1/15/08 to file and new HC cannot be selected by 1/13/08(5th day from advertising position) - does this make sense?

perhaps your neighbor will decipher the secret code.

in feds a job vacancy is posted with a specific closing date. dependent upon the union agreement it can be from 7 days to 30 days or continuous until filled. but, the state has its on set of rules. usually 5 days is 5 calendar days. but, it looks like the announce has one week or 7 days which is 5 working days. too, bad we couldn't have posted it on monday as soon as we found out. that way we could be announcing the new guy by this saturday.

i am sure that the greater majority of the state, students, and now coaches are all pulling for the new era of "mac attack".

@Tony,

Norm Chow is a big name that would bring a lot of recognition to the state, but I don't think he'd be ready to undertake what the next HC has to do here. To me, he seems like he needs EVERYTHING in place for it to work out. I could be wrong, but that's what it seems like to me. He did coach two Heisman winners (Leinart and Palmer ... QB's that UH had actually faced), but look at everything that SC had.

Even now, there is a lot of speculation that Carroll is only considering the ATL job because he knows a lot of the stuff that happened during his watch at SC and all of the crap that will hit the fan when that book that was mentioned earlier comes out. I mean, why else would you leave a cushy job like that?

From JJ's letter re: JJ Foundation:

However, I will continue to visit these great islands whenever I can and hopefully will be able to retire in Hawai’i.

Hmm. Five years at SMU. Then back to Hawaii, maybe. Wonder if that's been his plan all along? ...

*Ok, sorry, the denial creeps in every now and then.*

ST, go on vacation already! You need a break!

But before you go... are we gonna get to see those NY photos anywhere? ...

>Our boys knew before the game that he was leaving and that MUST have sagged their spirits. I watched the game again, the offense was sleep walking and out of sync. BigMac's defense kept fighting like Warriors and soon held their own.

I'm still not buying this argument unless the O-line was so depressed that they couldn't block. Georgia did pull its starters at some point. Not saying they didn't know JJ was leaving, but that maybe accounted for 10 percent of the loss. The other 90 percent was the size/speed advantage on the other side of the ball. P.S. the SMU AD is on record as saying he was on the phone with Steinberg every day from Christmas on, so to say JJ was unfocused is an understatement. Time to stop feeling sorry for JJ.

Finally, the late news that Pete Carroll is likely to go to the Falcons, is that not the ultimate bachi on JJ? If he had focused on pulling a big upset over Georgia without job hunting first, maybe today he'd be in line to apply for the USC job.

Al,

Money wise JJ could retire right now in extreme comfort. Remember Leigh Steinberg? he said that he and JJ made a killing in the stock market and other ventures.

I wouldn't be surprised if he would come back in five years and becomes one of Hawaii's biggest boosters. Let's not burn our bridges, lol.

about the AD position-
The chancellor would be leery
of hiring or recomending
someone that might expose a
whole manifestation of problems at the university
that might point back at her
or the Pres.If the new AD
cleans house and he finds
a lot of damaging things in
the AD dept then she probably
better off grooming the one
that she has now if she wants
to keep her job.These are
just my opinions,but observing
how those two at the top
operate,I say they wouid rather have a person of
loyalty and ties with the UH
than have a new AD with better
qualifications honing in on
problems, bording in on perhaps scandulous.Watch and
see...just a gut feeling.
(in fact I'd be very surprised
if we see someone new to the
department).

I really liked the attitude of Jeff Reinbold on Leahy and Leahy tonight. If MacMackin gets the job, that will definitely result in continuity for the program.

One thing S Tsai mentioned earlier was that if Mac were coach, the Lee's could be turned loose to recruit. What does this mean? Were they restricted by JJ before and if so why? I wonder why you would do that to 2 guys who could be fabulous recruiters.

Tony,

The Offense was most affected by the news. Against superior speed and you're not fully concentrated, you lose that extra half to one second needed for Colt to get the ball of. In that half second the receivers were open. The defense was less affected, they still had BigMack to help them. JJ was sleep walking too, the O-Line never made any real adjustments. Anyway, water under the bridge.

One thing that wasn't really said yet. I do wish JJ the best in his coaching career at smoooo but.....a lot of the money raised was from donors, I think it would be hard coaching under a situation where you need to answer to donors who pays your salary and would demand answers.....I thought all along have the Mac go with him was something he really needed to happen (Past record with Mac and without). Think everyone has felt the same emotions over the past few days, that even with all that was not done over the years as far as facilities goes, JJ would have been in a position to have those changes happen. JR and others here probably said it best, it is the challenge that JJ looks forward to.

I like many of you do hope for once the administration and powers to be will remedy this situation. I do believe they will keep their word, there are just too many eyes on them at this point not to. I agree with ST and I think they already have approached Mac about the job and will hire him if he wants it. But like what everyone fears, what's logical is sometime not so logical to the powers to be here. Only time will tell.

I thought L&L was pau for the season but my wife turned it on tonight - unfortunately it was at 7:45 but Coach Reinebold whole heartedly endorses Mac for head coach; believes that they have to name him soonest for continuity.

Guess I have to wait to see it on Channel 110 when it repeats!

Tomey for AD:

Personally, I have a difficult time accepting this if, what was posted last year is true, that, as a coach voter, he never did cast a vote for Hawaii. If untrue, my sincerest apology to Mr. Tomey.

As I said, if true, why would we want him as the next UHAD?

I like Jim Donovan because he's been there as an asst AD, knows the "ins and outs", truly cares for UH, and possess the leadership skills to do an excellent job. The key is CARES because if you care you will take all the necessary steps to insure success.

In many ways, he is like "Mr. Miyagi" - ability to step back and let others take the credit.
