The Warrior Beat
Stephen Tsai knows University of Hawai'i sports, down to the last decimal of a 40-yard dash. He's lived UH sports since 1987. Few reporters get the inside information like he does. What Tsai writes is a daily must read.

Blog readers give iTouch to BrianK

On behalf of our blog readers, we presented Brian Kajiyama with an iTouch today.
After learning that BrianK did not receive an iTouch as part of the Sugar Bowl gift bag, our readers donated money to buy BrianK a belated present.
Here are some of the donors (please let me know if I forgot somebody):

It was Barry Markowitz who first learned that Brian didn't receive an iTouch. Some of the folks got together and exchanged e-mails to raise money. It wasn't posted on the blog because the folks wanted to keep it a secret from BrianK. But, rest assured, it came from all of the readers.

Ran into Nick Rolovich today at UH.
He's looking fit.
Rolovich is an applicant for an assistant coaching job.
With all of the red tape, we'll just wait until everything gets approved.

Former UH receiver Craig Stutzmann said he is taking the steps needed to become eligible for a graduate assistant's position.
Stutzmann said he submitted an application today to enroll at UH as a post-graduate student. He also submitted a resume to apply for a G.A. position with the Warriors.
He cannot be considered for a G.A. position until he has been formally accepted into UH. That hasn't happened yet.

To be sure, life is different on the Lower Campus.
The word on the street is the football program is getting its first full-time secretary in a decade. During June Jones' nine-year tenure, students workers staffed the office.
Also, Greg McMackin leaves tonight on a recruiting mission to California. McMackin has promised to do as many home visits as possible.

* * *

The football team visits the Governor's mansion this afternoon.

* * *

Defensive end John Fonoti will be placed on scholarship.

* * *

Defensive tackle Fale Laeli said he will undergo arthroscopic surgery to "clean up" his left knee. He is expected to be ready for spring practice.

Derek Inouchi tells us that it was Carl Clapp who oversaw the timely installation of the new turf at Murakami Stadium.

Did anyone at UH explore the possibility of having the turf company install on both the baseball field and Cooke field at the same time? Possibly getting a discount for volume, saving money on contractors and probably shipping as well?

I'm shocked that the football program never had a full-time secretary. Doesn't baseball and basketball have one?

It's also encouraging to hear that the coaching staff is hitting the recruiting trail. Did the Maloof's every come through on their pledge to JJ and the football program?

I've heard great things about the new turf at Les Murakami Stadium.

Fitting improvements for a facility named after one of the state's most recognizable and respected contributors to UH athletics.

I can't wait for those lazy Sunday afternoons and Saturday nights spent there!

Kudos to Mr. Clapp for all of his work in that area.

Has the recruiting budget in general been raised up from 50,000? Was a new "promise" made to increase that amount? It seems that we are immediately seeing so many coaches going to the mainland to recruit.

I believe the Maloof's hefty donation to double the recruiting budget is feeding these treks to the mainland.

We'll see how much "they'll" be willing to up the ante in the seasons to come.
Coach Mack did say he was concerned with the 2009 and 2010 recruiting classes.

gigi, remember, I was a sociology major. I took some elective that was offered during a 3 week intensive summer session. Some kind of coach's something or other. It was actually a good/interesting class as far as I recall. But, like I said, the only thing "academically" I remember from it was JD's lecture.

he shared the UH athletic budget with us and the vision of rolling over funds so that the programs could stock up on $ in order to by pricier items rather than use the money or else loose it. When I went to work for the DOE, I tried to get that same model used in our school. Never worked but, JD's vision stayed with me till this day.

During a Sugar Bowl practice, a UH assistant coach scolded the AD about the lack of progress on the facilities.
AD promised Cooke Field would be finished by the end of the year.
They made a bet.
First it started with money. Then AD said he would bet his condo. Coach said he would match it with his condo. AD said his condo was worth more. Coach said he would bet his house against the AD's condo. They were about to agree when the coach said: You don't even own the condo.

Article on Colt from Rivals.com:

Alabama cornerback Simeon Castille had the unenviable task of slowing down Brennan and Co. in the Crimson Tide's 2006 season opener. Although Alabama won 25-17, Brennan threw for 350 yards and earned Castille's respect.

"I think he's as good as advertised," Castille said. "He makes good decisions. He's accurate with his throws. A lot of people say it's just because of the system that he runs, but I think he'll be able to adjust to an NFL-style system and be able to succeed."

P.S Watching Colt on NFL Network right now at the South team Senior Bowl practice...looks very very sharp. He said the reason why he lost so much weight was because he had a stomach flu.

Hey ST:

I was at the Basketball game on Saturday. (great win for Coach Nash, I think he's doing a great job with waaayyyy little talent!) I got to take a picture with Coach Mack while he was walking back to the seat near the Pep Band (as my wife said, "you'd NEVER see June Jones doing that!")

Question - Is the Basketball team now known as the Hawaii Warriors or does someone in UHAD Marketing need a refresher course on the various nicknames? I saw on 2 separate places in the program/lineup cards that were handed out where the basketball team was referred to as the Hawaii Warriors.

My understanding is that they are still the Rainbow Warriors (their warmups say 'Bows!)

Not to dig up old stuff and certainly not to agree with Joe Moore but something needs to be done about the nicknames. Not only have we lost a great and unique nickname for our football team by dropping Rainbows, but we have made things EXTRA confusing for the national media. I continually see the football team referred to as Rainbow Warrors nationally and i've seen ESPN call the basketball team the Warriors (not this year of course, no ESPN love for this team)

My two cents, either go back to Rainbow Warriors (my preference) or go all the way to Warriors for all mens teams and keep Rainbow Wahine for all women's teams.

Whatever they do, the AD needs to be consistent.

All men's sports: Warriors

All women's sports: Rainbow Wahine.

Simple as opposed to the current landscape:

Football and Men's Volleyball: Warriors

Men's Basketball: Rainbow Warriors

Baseball: Rainbows

Women's sports: Rainbow Wahine.

In all fairness, the press releases for the football team mentions the fact that the team is the Warriors and only the "Warriors", but habits are hard to break and the term "Rainbows" gets slipped in there.

To an extent, we should take under consideration what 18-21 year olds think. After all, they are the ones who will make the decision to play for Hawaii. We've had the Warrior nickname for the last eight years. The players on today's team came here and played as Warriors. To change that would not be a good move. The Warriors is a good nickname for the football team and it would not be a good move to change it. When the nickname was changed to Warriors, it really fired up the team eight years ago. If we change it to another name today, it will do the opposite--it will hurt morale because the players will see themselves caught in the middle of what the people of Hawaii like vs. what they don't like. The players are the ones who will be hurt by this. Eventually, that affects the product and production on the field. I do not think the players would be for that. Hawaii has built a good thing over the last nine years... we are moving forward. Let us not mess with it... let us simply build on it.

The following is from May 21, 2007. I am not sure what led me to click on the page. Fate? It is from the blow-by-blow portion of the blog regarding UH down at the Legislature that day.

Any idea who these people are, and if they're still drawing a salary? I mean, think of the big donations that come to mind of late. Anyone other than the Maloofs?

Frazier said he has a "prospect" list, people whom he feels can donate $1 million or more.
He also said there are five full-time fundraisers devoted specifically to athletics.

What needs to be done with Cooke Field is simple. Tear it down and build a new facility that can accommodate both our football, soccer and track teams. For soccer instead of driving to Waipio for the games we could have it on campus. Football games would still need to be at Aloha Stadium but this could be another practice facility.

With funds being as bare as it is now, the Athletics Department needs to look at holding various fundrasiers, etc. now. Or they could have someone donate $20 million to have the facility named after this person like the business school (Shidler). But let's not forget about the other sports. Football may be king but there are other programs as well with equal amounts of problems.

When HF installed the rainbow color track, he was being very one sided and didn't realize that this could also be a good soccer venue.

Glad to see the gears are in motion with the recruiting. We should have invited Mack & Miano to Kings for the LoCal Calf Call.

Great CC today - Glenn, Ronnie, Garret, UKU@LA, Tombo Ahi, Rainbow Cliff, Margo & I. We even called ST to ask about the pecking order of choosing the selection committee for the AD, and he said there first needs to be an advisory panel. Too many dang layers involved!

The "I can't believe I drove this long for lunch" award goes to.....TIE: Garret & Glenn. They were stuck in traffic due to a horrible accident. At one point, they went about a half mile in 30 min. Names of the different programs are at the bottom of the list in terms of priority.

The only thing that I personally don't want to see is the football team reverting back to the Rainbow Warriors.

With all due respect to the past, this football program was "re-invented" and developed a different "identity" on it's own as the "Warriors" and shouldn't be changed... again.

Great to see Stutzmann getting into the system!

Are the dimensions of a regulation soccer field too big for the current surface area of the Cooke Field "in-field".

So basically WHEN they install field turf and keep the existing track around it, does that mean it still cannot accomodate soccer games?

I don't understand the reference to ....the subliminal connotation that comes with the 'Rainbow' just isn't worth fighting for.

What I learned about the rainbow in Hawaiian cultural studies class is that it was perceived as a bridge and a symbol of hope and personal aspirations. Why is this such a bad thing?

Although I am by no means an expert on Hawaiian culture, I do not believe that women were considered fighters/warriors. Would it therefore be appropriate to call the teams Wahine Warriors basketball, softball or volleyball teams.

Djmitcho,

If that's the case then the sidelines could rest on the track surrounding the field.

With all that new lighting up there, Cooke Field really can be a multi-purpose facility.

I was surprised how much they still used that "condemned" facility tho.

Leila's videos showed the football team doing conditioning drills there prior to the Sugar Bowl and they recently held the walk-on tryouts on that black stuff.

That place is really an eyesore and a HUGE visual handicap for visiting recruits.

Soccer fields like Ice hockey rinks can vary in size. I'm not sure what the standard size (MLS, Premier league etc.)is if there is one. Cook Field may be smaller than the Waipio Stadium field, which may be larger than a standard football field. Women and youth fields can be smaller, same for an over 35 leagues

Just like USC's womens sports are proceeded by "the Women of Troy"

Tennessee Men = Volunteers, or Vols. Women = Lady Vols.

Many teams with Tech in their name have women's sports nicknamed Lady Techsters....

So to me, just pick a name and stick with that one.

When we were playing soccer at Cooke Field in the '70s it was plenty sufficient and had all the regulation markings for a regulation football field too. Hope that the astro turf on there before they took it off was from the same era!

I know this comment is a little late in the day coming, but the BB field field was re-turfed soon after the softball field was.

Not sure how school projects of that type are done, but contractors must bid for federal jobs, I'm thinking it would be the same here. So getting a 2 for 1 deal (or 3 for 1 deal) might not have been an option.

On another note, since the softball field was being re-turfed during the summer, they were unable to raise $$ this year by having their annual clinic. Wahine soccer was also unable to hold their winter clinic because their field was loaned to the Boise FB team to practice before the Hawaii Bowl. I wonder if Boise had to pay rental fees...

Phil Rivers is a tough QB.

But the Chargers have a genuine leader now. Listen to players admiration. Rivers had unannounced (what a shock) clean-up knee surgery last Monday. He will undergo surgery for a complete ACL tear. He played in Foxborough with all of this, and it was a terrific effort.

This is how leaders are born. Rivers' effort was a Brett Favre moment. At the time, we had no idea how bad his injury was, except he was hurting.

“This guy is incredible,” Smith says. “I've never questioned his leadership. He's a special player. A performance like that is bringing more light on him. I'm so pleased and proud of our quarterback.”

Brennan, who is 6 feet 2, weighed in Monday at only 185 pounds, which could raise concerns about whether he's big enough to withstand the physical pounding that comes from playing quarterback in the NFL. By contrast, the other two quarterbacks on the South team are the 234-pound Woodson and 225-pound Erik Ainge of Tennessee.

Brennan blamed his weight loss on a recent illness and said he hoped to bulk up to 205 or 210 for the Combine.

"I got the stomach flu last week when I was home in California," he said. "I lost a ton of weight. I thought I'd be able to gain it all back, but I guess I didn't."

Interesting analysis about whether or not recruiting rankings actually correlates to wins.

The result is outstanding for the recruiting rankings at the top – five of the top seven in winning percentage were in Rivals’ top seven in the recruting averages, all of the recruiting top ten were in the top 20 on the field, and Rivals was exactly right or within a scant three positions of the on-field results of Southern Cal, Oklahoma, Texas, Georgia, LSU, Auburn, Michigan, California, Virginia, Oregon, Arizona State, Penn State, Kansas State, Pittsburgh, Kansas, Rutgers Iowa State, Vanderbilt and Indiana.

So: Rivals was very, very good at picking the top teams – of the top 25 winningest teams of the last six years, all were either pegged in or very near their respective positions by the recruiting rankings or achieved them by winning against overwhelmingly lower-ranked opposition; of the top 25 teams according to the recruiting rankings, 18 are in the top 30 in winning percentage. This is to be expected when you spend most of your time distinguishing between a small number of high-profile, four and five-star guys but can’t possibly make the same level of distinction among a much larger number of two and three-star prospects with more variability among them than the star-based rankings are designed to show. If Rivals indicates a team’s talent is good, it’s probably right; if it indicates it’s just average, or below average, that team probably still has a shot – but only to an extent. You’d be wrong if you cast your lot with the gurus completely, and wronger if you ignored them.

I don't mind JJ taking away any coach from MWC schools! I'd love for him to get a key BYU or TCU coach too!

For once it's good to see that our defensive front has some depth. Of course that can change quickly with injuries. We still need to get some recruits on D-line and LB this year so we can continue to add to the depth & build for the future. Is Maka petitioning for an extra year? I heard that was a possibility.

Article on UH commit Lewis Walker.

Walker verbally committed to play at the University of Hawaii for new Warriors coach Greg McMackin while on a recruiting trip there during the weekend. Walker, who started on both sides of the ball for the Bulldogs and returned punts and kickoffs, will play cornerback at Hawaii and likely return punts and kickoffs.

The Warriors, fresh off a berth in the BCS, are in desperate need of defensive backs. Three starters in their secondary from their team that went 12-0 in the regular season have graduated, and Walker believes he'll have a chance to play sooner rather than later.

"I felt really, really comfortable," Walker said. "I said, I could see myself fitting in right there."

Hawaii's passionate fan base even played a role in Walker's commitment.

"It's like the whole state is behind them," Walker said. "It feels like an NFL team there, like how Denver is with the Broncos. They really embrace them."

Walker's commitment eased a lot of stress in his life. He was offered a scholarship by the University of Utah last spring and called the Utes to accept in early November. But when he called, he was told by the Utes that they no longer had a scholarship for him.

Feature article on Jake Heun.

"You know how it is in Alaska, you're lucky to get a Division II scholarship," Heun said Sunday while en route to the school, where he will enroll this week and soon take part in spring drills. "I wasn't ready for that."

Heun said junior college football offered him a way to prove himself at a competitive level; the Rams are one of the top junior college football programs in the country and regularly send players on to D-I schools.

"It was a huge stepping stone," Heun said, noting he garnered playing time right away, a better option than sitting at a D-I school.

"I could have gone right to a Division I school, walked on, sat one or two years, then maybe make special teams," he said.

Heun also seriously considered Nebraska, among other schools, but the Cornhuskers wanted him only as a linebacker. Hawaii offered the prospect of playing running back. That, plus the thought of palm trees and beaches, led Heun to choose Hawaii.

"It doesn't get much better than living and playing in Hawaii," he said.

Heun also vacationed in the islands over the holidays with his family, and he was impressed with the state's passion surrounding the Rainbow Warriors' undefeated run before losing to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

"It seemed like the whole island, the whole state, was into (the Warriors)," he said. "I've been in college towns, but I've never seen an entire state get into a team like that."

Look like Gov. Lingle has already begun pulling back from the earlier talk of funding UH Athletics.

With the departure of Warrior football head coach June Jones there has been a growing sentiment to fix the University of Hawaii's repair problems among lawmakers. Some have said they want to give the Manoa campus and the athletics department an infusion of funds for part of the projected $400 million backlog of repairs.

Lingle hinted that such a move might be difficult to achieve with the drop in projected money by the Council on Revenues.

It's really nice to see things progressing along at such an "expiditious" rate after the JJ fiasco. I hope it doesn't stop. I love the way the Mack era is starting off, with Lee's already getting the local recruits and M&M off to the mainland, it's ideal. We stand a very good chance being way better off than during the JJ era, call his departure an ironic benefit. I think all the pieces are in place for continuing where JJ left off and then some (like BCS victory). I think we should all be pretty stoked for what lies ahead!

Former UH player Dino Babers just got a coaching job with Baylor.

Baylor football coach Art Briles added the “final piece of the puzzle” on Monday by naming former Texas A&M and Arizona offensive coordinator Dino Babers as the Bears’ outside receivers coach and recruiting coordinator.

A 1984 Hawaii graduate, Babers played outside linebacker, safety and running back for the Rainbows and spent one year in the Canadian Football League before an injury ended his career.

Babers started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Hawaii in 1984, spent two more years as a GA at Arizona State and then took his first full-time job as the running backs coach at Eastern Illinois.

James: re: Maka, we can hope. He would give some quality depth at end.

Garret: Te'o might end up being the most highly recruited player ever out of Hawaii (or at least the last 20 or so years that I have been following things). From what I've seen, he is the real deal. Some people felt he could play Div I football as a high school junior. He's that good. It's too bad, but as a die-hard UH fan, I feel like we probably have no shot at him. I don't have any evidence but the track record has been that these kind of guys don't even take an official visit to UH. Heard this morning that he has 12 scholarship offers now. Jason Ching (Punahou/Notre Dame) is probably the last guy that had this much buzz around him nationally. Maybe Coach Mac & Co. can give this guy something to think about next year.

Argument for keeping Libre and/or Pilares in the "running".

Offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride has struck a balance between battering Brandon Jacobs (3 postseason rushing TDs) and the quicker change-of-pace style of Ahmad Bradshaw (16 carries, 63 yards, 1 TD vs. Packers). Running the ball successfully will help freeze New England's aging linebackers and open up the passing game even more.

ITunes will be installed on your computer for free. You can then do one of three things to get music on it.

1. Purchase it from your laptop with a credit card (account you will have to setup already)

2. Purchase it directly from your ITouch

3. Import files you already have on your computer through the ITunes program.

Once you have songs on there, any song, just tilt the ITouch to any side and the screen will change with you automaticly showing you the Jukebox album view.

Just like when you go on the internet. Tilt the ITouch and it will change the view.

I have redone everything and starting to play on the Heisman level.

I have finished my "Colt" season, alas he was never nominated for the Heisman but we did win the Fiesta Bowl against Arkansas. Held McFadden to 39 yards rushing!!!

My Graunke era was just as good. DEFEATED Florida AT Florida 38-3. Won the Rose Bowl against Ohio State.

Right now I am in my Funaki period of time and have "sprouted" wings in a modified spread-option offense. Funaki made it as a Heisman finalist and so did Tebow, who oddly enough didn't opt to go to the pro's.

Now tonight I face Florida in the Sugar Bowl.

Colt Brennan/QB/Hawaii: Brennan's inadequate arm strength is obvious to all in attendance. His passes lack any velocity which gives the defensive backs extra time to break up his throws, something that's been a common occurrence.

Thought about calling Garret about the LoCal gathering and heading to Torrance as I was in Burbank this morning. But after hassling with grip equipment, decided to not risk eternal afternoon traffic and drove back to the IE.

What'd I miss?

BTW...Garret, I'll drop the poster off later this week, we're moving the film foundation office Thursday - Saturday.

Oh yeah, I just remembered. So Stephen, my Math 302 prof wants you to write an article similar to last year's one with Colt's soap story, only for the academic side.

So here's what happened today — he wanted to use the overhead projector, but the plug in the room apparently was an old one. He went to the Math Dept office to get a 3-prong adaptor. Luckily, the one and only adaptor they have was there for us to use. In a diatribe against the UH bureaucracy, he also told us about long-developing stalactites/stalagmites in the music building that were only removed a few years ago. I jokingly said we should have you write an exposé; he mentioned you should come with me to class. Yikes!

Lots of athletes with "high" GPA's and disappointing SAT scores. Why? Because they take the Nuclear Underwater Basket-Weaving classes.

There are still some coaches out there who ask teachers to pass their star players. They are just looking after their own egos rather than after the kid.

And Doris might want to correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the NCAA has conducted research that better correlates GPA to academic success than SAT/ACT score to success. I don't know enough to say whether that is true or false, but you'd think the minimum SAT score should be somewhat respectable. I mean, DII (which doesn't have a sliding scale) requires at least an 820.

The biggest problem with the BrianK gift was that so many people wanted to donate so others never got a chance to. The other problem was that some people wanted to donate more than they were being asked and had to be told to contribute less. I guess that isn't a big problem, but it was amazing how much Aloha people have here.

I really hope that nobody feels left out of the loop for BrianK's gift. Once the funds were raised for the iTouch, I think the e-mails telling others about it stopped. We didn't even know it would be mentioned on the blog, but ST wrote about it at the top.

If there are needs of the football program that the coaches identify which they do not have funds for, I'll bet that the Tsaiko Ohana can help out. I guess we can cross out carpet from the list...but then why was the carpet in Mack's office cleaned so recently?

Anyone had a chance to see Colt during the practices? Is he really doing half as badly as the SI writer says he is?

I dunno, but to me, if you take someone out of his native element (his old team, pretty much), even if you throw him into a field of all-stars, everything still takes time to sort out. A Rivals.com report I read says _none_ of the South QBs are really distinguishing themselves right now. Basically, I'd think everyone needs time to get in sync with each other, and even then, it might not be as good as when they get to throw to their own receivers, etc. The Colt Brennan we've seen all season has plenty of zip in his throwing arm, so this SI report makes me suspicious...wonder if the guy ever saw him play outside of the Sugar Bowl. Well, at least Colt knows that he'll be fighting the uphill battle for respect for a while yet.

The district in which I teach passed a $50-million levy to refurbish one of the local high schools. The school now has every technology available in every classroom, including wireless keyboards and mice, LCD projectors, DVD players, digital still and video cameras, and a built-in sound system with CD player, for the teachers.

They figure by the end of this school year they will have wifi throughout the entire campus for the teachers and students.

I cannot imagine teaching in a school with outlets that do not work, and not having multi-media access at my teaching station.

When I gave my PhD defense, Texas still used overhead projectors since the ones that plug into computers were still too expensive. So, right in the middle of the discussion of my research the projector bulb burned out! I go for the backup bulb...and it was missing!

I ended up breaking into a locked classroom and stealing a bulb from a projector that was bolted down. The thing is, Texas had basically an unlimited budget for research but nobody wanted to spend their research dollars on projector bulbs!

BowsForever: I just saw the stuff on NFL.com, at the link homey posted earlier today. Had a nice throw deep down the left sideline. Showed some footwork things, mostly play-action — looked poor, but that's to be expected. Showed one throw when he looked left, then threw late and short backside. When asked about that, Colt said the read went left based on the coverage, then when he read the backside, the receiver running the wrong route threw him off.

Thought he spoke well during the interview, and did okay during whatever clips they showed of him. But it wasn't his best day, that's for sure.

Today, for the second time in a week, the Phys Sci Bldg elevator got stuck. The other day, I just had to hit Open Doors once or twice, and then the elevator finally shut and went up. This time, pushing the button didn't work, so I manually pushed the door open all the way, then let it close. Surprisingly enough, it wasn't that hard to push — I'll just do that from now on.

That elevator looks like it was installed way back when Stephen was a little kid. I mean, it has a rotary phone and everything. I'm surprised it lets you dial seven-digit phone numbers.

(I remember my Grandma had an old rotary phone.)

BrianK has made this blog a better place everytime he has had time to post. And the fact that this gift could actally help him do his job better to help the Warriors made it even better.

We could have gotten far more people and people would have given more if we had asked. It is clear that the Tsaikos appreciate the job that BrianK does and the person that he is. The list of the people who would have contributed for BrianK is far longer than the list above...so upon reflection, we probably should take the list down.

I can't remember if this was posted already...

Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan said he wasn't particularly surprised that former Warriors coach June Jones was returning to the mainland to take over at SMU.

"I had talked (before the season) about the facilities and the way the program was being run," Brennan said. "I think Coach Jones, after taking us to the Sugar Bowl, was waiting for his contract. That's a joke. He should have had his contract long before we got to the Sugar Bowl.

"He's got to do what's best for himself and his family. I think he needed a new challenge, and that's why he went to SMU."

Brennan also issued the following warning to SMU's Conference USA rivals: "That program's going to be a terror a couple of years from now, if not next year."

Although Brennan criticized the way Hawaii allowed Jones to leave, he praised the school for selecting former defensive coordinator Greg McMackin as its new coach.

"He understands the program, understands the culture and people really well," Brennan said. "The players will react really well to him because he was probably the players' coach of all coaches."

Finally, one draft analysis says nice things about Colt.

The headliners of the South team are the quarterbacks so why don't we start there. To be honest nobody stood out, although if you put a gun to my head I'd say Hawaii's Colt Brennan looked the best, although just by the narrowest of margins. I actually found a spot on the sideline where the quarterbacks were throwing 20 yard outs right in my direction to try and gauge arm strengths and it was almost too close to call. Kentucky's Andre Woodson and Tennessee's Erik Ainge seemed to float their throws a bit whereas Brennan gets them there on a rope. Brennan also showed the ability to fit balls into a tight spot although he seemed a bit indecisive at times.

The QBs who skipped the Senior Bowl get some criticism in this article...and the article mentions that their skipping the Senior Bowl might affect Miami's draft plans!

But two of the best incoming rookie QBs - Boston College’s Matt Ryan and Louisville’s Brian Brohm - decided not to play in the game showcasing many of the nation’s top college seniors.

Ryan and Brohm will have plenty of time to state their cases for NFL teams, like the Dolphins, with serious questions at QB. (John Beck managed to produce one offensive touchdown in 15 quarters of football, and Trent Green will be 38 next season, if he is cleared medically and returns.)

But next month’s scouting combine, college pro days and individuals workouts aren’t quite the same as practicing with an NFL coaching staff for an entire week and playing a game against the best players in the nation.

Skipping the game could leave some coaches, GMs and scouts wondering about a player.

“It means a lot to me for the guys who want to play in this game because it means they love to play football, they’re not afraid to compete with the best in the country,” said South team head coach Mike Nolan of the 49ers. “That kind of speaks for itself.”

The decision to bypass the Senior Bowl might have backfired on Brady Quinn last season. Quinn pulled out of the game at the last minute and eventually fell to the No. 22 pick partly because some questioned his attitude.

The level of interest in Ryan and Brohm could impact the draft strategy Dolphins, who hold the No. 1 pick and four of the top 64 selections.

Aloha Tsaikos,

I'd like to express my sincere THANKS for your very overwhelming act of kindness!

The gift of the iTouch was something I NEVER expected. I am amazed at how you, as a collective whole, were able to come together to do something like this.

I believe in the concept of "pay it forward." I plan to do something good for another person/organization in the near future. As Helen Keller said, "I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. I will not refuse to do the something I can do."
I WILL do something good, as you all have done for me.

I encourage all of you to continue to support Coach Mack and the athletic department, as a whole, by ordering your season tickets...not just for football, but for all of the sports that the University offers. Baseball season is right around the corner...we have an awesome new field, let's support Coach Trapasso and his baseball boys so they can have an awesome season!

Mahalo and Go Warriors!

Doris,

I'm pretty cheap on phones since I worry about my kids breaking it. So, I'm still using my RAZR phone that I got for free almost 2 years ago. The call quality has been great and it is small with a good battery, so I'm not going to upgrade my phone until I get a cheap one with WiFi.

ST
maybe it was posted somewhere, sorry to ask, but can you direct me to the exact list of 19 things that JJ stated needed addressing?

Busy day 2day calling plenty Reps, Senators re $ for UH Football. Told em that as far as the Warrior Nation is concerned, our football team is front n center in our minds, more so than roads, superferry, kau inoa, hawn homes, oha, fuud, church. Warrior Nation is da ting that binds us all, from hilltop to homeless; cuts across us all, even Walker and he was only here a weekend. Our State leaders need to let us all, including our team, know that the State has their backs.

Go Warriors!

Garret,

Sounds like February will be an eventful month for you! Late reply but your comment about wood shop made me smile. I would have been at King a few years ahead of you and one year we had a rotation of wood shop, metal shop, plastics & drafting, sewing and cooking. Did you make the soda-can ash trays in metal shop?

We started teaching our kids how to use power tools from about 2nd-3rd grade. Not being fazed by power tools and DIY stuff is a confidence-builder for a preteen. It is great that Faith is able to start on wood projects so young!

BrianK,

You are a member of our Tsaiko family. So many people wanted to contribute to your gift that our biggest problem was that we had to limit how much anyone could give and we couldn't tell so many others who would have been happy to contribute. We also knew you read the blog so we couldn't mention it here and have it be a surprise.

People in states all over the country, plus in several neighbor islands, all somehow found out and the list grew amazingly quickly. You have touched so many lives and this is just a small example of that.

In the future we will do projects to help Coach Mack and the UH program. We just need to understand what is needed and there are so many people here who will help!

Doris,

Until I got the iPhone last fall, I've always done the cheap phone as I usually have problems getting them to last more than 14 months.

I've loaded our film trailer and rough cut onto it as I always have my phone, but not the computer. As we are trying to raise the finishing funds for the movie, it's nice to whip it out immediately if we happen to come across an potential donor/investor.

Visual voice mail is great, love being able to pick and choose which messages to playback, rather than in the order received.

Google maps works well on the iPhone, including live traffic updates. I have a GPS unit but traffic on there requires a paid subscription.

I do more price-checking on the internet when I'm at a store these days.

My sister has a blackberry, but she just got an iTouch. She has more than a year left on her phone contract so won't switch. We're waiting for her to join the cult.

Of course I have a couple of Macs so everything syncs nicely...

Doris,

I am really envious (ha) of people with the E n V 9 9 0 0, which is an L G phone. It's got a good display, functional keyboard, camera, and it's not too thick. It swings open to access the keyboard so you aren't pressing the letters by mistake. Think it is the blackberry where if the person doesn't lock it and puts the unit in a pocket, it can speed dial and send weird text or sound.

(post wasn't allowed so I put spaces in the phone name)

gigi,

We set things up VERY uniquely for my parents...allowing them to switch between e-mail accounts easily in Outlook Express, allowing my Dad to record everything for his golf club, allowing my Mom to easily do her church newsletter, etc.

Plus, I'll run through everything to make sure it is fine. And their Slingbox wireless connection is messed up also, so I need to fix that too.

A BIG SHOUT-OUT for Garret and Glenn on how they bravely dealt with the accident of the 405 and still made it to the Tsaiko Ohana with out a hitch. Tombo Ahi was MAGNIFICENT as he just fit right in as UKU just dedicated as ever asorbing all the wealth that was brought out by the intelligent and articulate minds. Special Thanks to Rich and Margo for treating us to lunch as both of you GREAT folks are so AWESOME and Ronnie calling the call for ALL of us to be together. My children of the AWJHC HONORED Garrets children with all the toy gifts as each toy were given by there love and appreciation for Hawaiian children as I share my story to them many times of my children skills being folstered by Hawaii Keike's. The ALOHA is going well down in South Central Los Angeles and Tsaiko Nation is becoming HUGHE among my administrator leaders. Mahalo for your GREATNESS ! (P.S. gigi- Stretch and I do Treo, J and Kekoa do iPhone and I'm sure many others do Blackberry. I have been a Palm user since the early Palm Pilot days and am used to it. Miss writing in Grafitti 1 and 2 but like the small Treo buttons for getting around with. I could not adjust to the warm fingerpad requirement on the iPhone but if you need a graphic interface, it is great to see the web on it. The Treo is just text but it does have a camera and other features.

I needed a slightly larger screen and the ability to manipulate images so the Asus EEEPC (Aisoos) is perfect for my needs and costs the same as an iPhone. Plus, I can watch pre-loaded movies or listen to music on it too.

To each, his own. ATT wireless lets you try out equipment for 30 days and if you return it in mint condition, there is no charge. I took the iPhone back in about a week with no penalty.

I would recommend TRYING different phones to get the one you really like. Blackberry fans are to PDA phones what Mac owners are to personal computers ;-)

BrianK, happy to see you with your own iTouch now!!! Mahalo, STEPHEN!

One of the beauties of cyber space is the ability to share pure thought and find friends who relate to you on that level without artificial barriers like age, gender, race, accent, socio-economic strata and the like.
We are blessed to know each other first on this heart-to-heart level before we meet in a physical world full of these artificial barriers. This cyber meetingplace actually helps to lower those barriers and, in some cases, eliminate them all together so that when we meet to shake hands, we are already dear friends, and that is the most important thing.

And when people act in unity, for a common good, wonderful things can happen. We witnessed it all football year. This unity is not only accomplishes goals but brings blessings and benefit to those who jump in. People find a way to make a difference, respectfully, organically, even spiritually!

Go Warriors!

green_machine - (I use both Mac and PC and now Aisoos which is Linux) Windows dominates the PC world, yet Mac users are usually Mac users by conscious choice and not just part of a crowd. Blackberry users are like Mac users- people who made a conscious choice and don't care if they may be perceived to be in a minority.

One time on a night road trip I had to stop in the middle of nowhere, had the phone in between the door and the end of the dash, opened the door, plop, got back in drove off, end of phone. best part of LG Chocolate is the Motorola S9 headphones, wireless, perfect for the gym. I stopped bringing the iPod to the gym, always catching the wires of regular headphones on stuff.

I don't think everything for Colt is such a disaster. He can be heavier. We've seen him be heavier. Now that his primary job (at least for now) will be football (no school), he can focus on gaining it. No more getting chased around campus for autographs. Just focus.

It's probably better for him to get drafted later, have time to develop, and then come out if given the chance. Even if you don't really even play, you make more money in the NFL than most of us worker bees with higher educational degrees. That being said, after watching the NFL.com interview, I must say that CB is quite impressive in an interview...charismatic, charming, intelligent. That guy is going places regardless of the ultimate destination. I think he'd make an excellent commentator someday.

The gift to Brian K was a thoughtful generous idea and that in & of itself should be acknowledged.

Nevertheless, I am at a loss trying to understand why DrDoc and I were left off the list of blog regulars invited to make a contribution.

I certainly don't want anyone to think that we were asked to chip in and declined to do so.

Yes, it was important not to put out a call for contributions on the blog itself so as not to spoil the surprise. And, yes, it might be difficult to get e-mail addresses to send out a call that way; however, many of us do list our contact information on the blog or have shared it with others. For example, at least 10 people on the list have my e-mail and cell phone number.

Since it's too late to contribute to the iTouch, instead we'll make a small gift to the baseball program in Brian's name.

Pomai:

I answered your inquiry about how members of Board of Regents' candidates advisory committee are selected on 01/21/08 @ 21:48. I don't know if you saw it or not because it was like ten hours after you posted your question.

I apologize for the delay, but for the past three days I've been really sick with the annual cold only this time I lost my hearing as well. It started coming back late Tuesday afternoon.

Off to bed - have a conference from 9am to 3 pm and then I'm going out looking for a polar bear costume.

Thanks I saw it, now the question is are they already selected? And if not when will they be? Also will their names be made public?

I think that it would be important that those on the Board of Regents' candidates advisory committee listen to the public or at least get some input from the public.

MOBILE, Ala. -- When last seen on a football field, Colt Brennan was being scraped off the artificial turf at the Louisiana Superdome.

The only thing more pronounced than Georgia's 41-10 thrashing of Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl was Brennan's inability to get anything going offensively in that game.

[+] Enlarge
Colt Brennan

Dan Anderson for ESPN.com

Can Colt Brennan take a snap under center and drop back quickly? He hopes to show scouts he can.
He was sacked eight times, hounded into three interceptions and generally made to look like a quarterback who was out of his league by a defense that was bigger, faster and more physical than anything Brennan had seen during his record-setting torrent through the WAC.

"We weren't ready for that. I wasn't ready for that," said Brennan, who broke 31 NCAA records at Hawaii, including most career touchdown passes (131).

Now comes the question that will dog Brennan until he proves otherwise: Is he ready for the NFL?

Yesterday I posted how Georgia Tech was charging $10 for people who wanted to hear Paul Johnson talk about his recruits on NLI day. Colorado State is charging up to $27!

In a continuing effort to engage football fans, Colorado State University has announced plans for a Feb. 6 reception to celebrate national signing day.

The event, set for 5 p.m. at the Fort Collins Hilton, will give fans a chance to hear new coach Steve Fairchild's assessment of his first recruiting class, which will be announced that day. The reception will include a video with highlights of newly signed Rams.

Cost is $22 for Ram Club members and $27 for others. The event includes a buffet, with a cash bar available.

Ralston Dews wasn't happy when Phil Bennett got fired, but he didn't worry about it, either, which was his first mistake.

He didn't even get nervous when SMU took 71 days to hire June Jones.

And the form letter Ralston received in November telling him the new coach had right to refuse all commitments?

He didn't think anything of it. He had a letter of confirmation. He heard nothing to make him believe he wouldn't be a Mustang.

Until last week, anyway. That's when Ralston, a 6-1, 335-pound lineman from Tyler Lee, got a quickie course in today's college athletics.

Ralston won't be a member of Jones' first recruiting class. He isn't the first kid that's happened to, and he won't be the last.

Of course, oral commitments are nonbinding. SMU didn't break any NCAA rules. Big 12 coaches do it. Last month, Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy reportedly told a Stephenville quarterback and a Mesquite wide receiver he wouldn't honor commitments to put them on scholarship this spring. Baylor's new coach, Art Briles, pulled an offer to South Oak Cliff's Kydarian Wilkins two weeks ago.

Commitments work both ways, too. Recruits sometimes change their minds, as teenagers are wont to do.

On one hand, Jones probably did Ralston a service if he wasn't going to play him. Better to find out now than spend four years regretting it.

SMU has its own regrets. When Bennett was hired, he honored Mike Cavan's commitments, which left him only four scholarships to offer.

Steve Orsini, SMU's athletic director, wasn't about to let that happen again. He wrote to recruits on Nov. 7, advising them the new coach would have the last say. At least two took the hint and looked elsewhere.

Ralston didn't, which was his second mistake. But his father shouldn't have had to call to find out. And it's not Ralston's fault SMU took so long to hire a coach, or that Jones was left with a short evaluation period.

There are several things which I came to appreciate as a Warrior fan watching the Sugar Bowl...UH got whooped on both the OL/DL sides of the ball. But, the positives are that UH now knows where to improve and what direction to aim for. UH(fans)wanted to know just where we stood, talent wise and there's no shame in playing the best out there.
My thought bout CB getting sacked; If not for the superior DL of Georgia, especially the rush by their DE's, then CB wud have had the time to complete more passes. All thing being even, I think CB will do just fine...only thing is to me, he needs to bulk up and get stronger, which I think should have been addressed at the begining of his senior season....good luck CB, do us proud, you can do it.

Now we know why Urban Meyer is such a great recruiter.

Because he doesn't just offer scholarships to players.

He apparently offers scholarships to their girlfriends, too.

There are reports that Moore likely wasn't going to attend UF unless Smith -- a gymnast who had competed for UCLA in 2006 but quit because of an injury -- came to Gainesville, too.

Can you guess what happened next? That's right, Meyer reportedly contacted the girlfriend, he contacted UF gymnastics Coach Rhonda Faehn and -- voila! -- Moore and Smith are both on scholarship and already enrolled at UF.

Moore, after all, is considered the No. 1 junior-college prospect in the country. He's a 6-foot-4, 220-pound wide receiver who runs a 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds. "A freak," according to Jamie Newberg, a national recruiting analyst for Scout.com.

It's no wonder Meyer recruited Moore to be a UF football player. But the question everyone wants to know is: What business did Meyer have recruiting Moore's girlfriend to be a UF gymnast?

Obviously, it wasn't because he was impressed with her back handspring. In fact, I'd love to hear Meyer's recruiting pitch to Smith. I'm betting it went something like this:

Meyer: "Can you do a cartwheel?"

Smith: "Yes."

Meyer: "Say no more -- full ride!"

If this is true, Meyer potentially broke two rules: (1) Coaches from one sport aren't usually authorized to recruit athletes from other sports and (2) For most of November, football coaches aren't allowed to phone potential recruits more than once a week.

UF officials are looking into this matter and hoping Smith was simply exaggerating when she told the Sun that Meyer contacted her "every day." Maybe there was some exaggeration, but does anybody really doubt Meyer pushed the envelope right to edge and maybe over it?

Meyer is consumed with recruiting. He contacts anybody and everybody whom he believes can give him an inside track with a star prospect. Don't forget, Meyer is pretty much the one who got text-messaging banned by the NCAA.

Now that this news is becoming more public, it looks like Florida is looking into it more...the articles from yesterday indicated that Meyer had been cleared by Florida.

Meyer said in an interview last week that he thought he had not broken any rules and had been cleared of wrongdoing.

"No problems with that," he said. "We're fine."

But McCloskey said he and his department will spend as long as the next few weeks determining whether the coach is correct. UF officials have informed the Southeastern Conference of the issue and plan to use phone records and interviews as they review the case.

UF officials also reviewed a tape of ESPN's broadcasts before and during Saturday's Kentucky-Florida basketball game at the O'Connell Center but do not expect any serious violations to come from the situation. At least one football recruit on campus for a weekend official visit was shown by the cameras. Schools are prohibited from promoting recruits before they sign letters of intent.

If you wanted a good meal, would it matter to you what the chef looked like? If your screenplay was being turned into a film, would it matter to you how much the director weighed? So why, pray tell, was Mark Mangino’s door not knocked down by Michigan, West Virginia, UCLA or any of the other 15 schools that had coaching vacancies this offseason?

Because he is overweight, bald and considered at times to be surly.

It’s always good to see progress. Kudos to the athletics directors. That’s neither here nor there, though, because these guys aren’t bigoted. Just amazingly short-sighted.
One other thing about him: his trophy case now features the 2007 Big 12 Coach of the Year award along with eight separate National Coach of the Year awards. Plus, he won an Orange Bowl at the University of Kansas, for crying out loud.

Arkansas hired a con man, who couldn’t even finish the season at his previous job as coach for the Atlanta Falcons (Bobby Petrino). UCLA hired a coach who has had problems follow him at every stop and was essentially blackballed from college since 2002 (Rick Neuheusel). West Virginia hired a coach who used the “n” word when referring to a player at his previous head coaching stop (Bill Stewart). And Michigan hired a guy who promptly shredded documents at his old school and is trying to dodge a contractually obligated $4 million buyout (Rich Rodriguez).. It’s pathetic. These bastions of higher learning are willing to roll the dice on candidates with character concerns for their head coaching positions but not on men with impeccable character whom the boosters’ wives won’t swoon after.

A Missouri senator has introduced a bill to make the Kansas Jayhawk the official game bird of the state of Missouri.

What’s a game bird, you might ask? It’s the official bird to be hunted throughout the state. A Jayhawk, remember, is a mythical creature.

“Jeeze, I really don’t know what to say to that,” said KU associate athletic director Jim Marchiony when told of the legislation. “I don’t know whether to be proud, afraid or outraged.”

Some people just are too rough and tumble for today's "sell phones". A great alternative for ATT users is the Go Phone- available at places like WalMart any time. For less than $20 ea, you can buy a bunch of these and keep em' handy for the next time your phone jumps across a seat and into a cup of coffee (happened to me- no uncovered cups in my vehicles any more!). They work not only for the pay as you go service, but also for REGULAR accounts too! No need to spend $175 for the cheapest "regular" phone any more. (One of my sons uses these now ;-)

Tuesday Sr. Bowl Practice recap

Colorado LB Jordon Dizon had a good practice, receiving praise from Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Ryan more than once. Dizon showed good instincts in the run gam, always appeared around the ball and getting by blockers. He certainly could be a great fit as a "Will" linebacker in a scheme like the Bucs or Colts use.

Hawaii QB Colt Brennan connected with Texas WR Limas Sweed on a great deep in route. It was Brennan's best throw of the day and Sweed's best route and catch.

I entered the following on Google - University of Hawaii Board of Regents Search Committee - and immediately came up with this URL:

https://www.hawaii.edu/rcac/

The last four letters stand for Regents Candidates Advisory Council.

When I clicked onto it, it gave me all kinds of information - who sits on it, where the office is, how to download the forms, details about the selection process, etc.

Please call them to get further information. If you do write them for information, please provide your full name & contact information.

Here is an excerpt from the website:

(The Council shall)...

E. Notify selected candidates that their name(s) will be presented to the governor for possible selection and follow up with a letter.

F. Inform the university system’s associate vice president for external affairs and university relations to prepare the press release of names.

G. Prepare the presentation to the governor listing the nominees for each open seat.
The public can provide written comments addressed to the Governor on these individuals prior to the time she/he makes her/his final selection.

Once the list is received by the Senate, the public will have additional opportunities to make comments on the final list of nominees to the Chair and Members of the Education Committee. You can get their contact information on the legislative website at
http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov.
Hope this answers your questions as to how to continue to be involved in the selection process.

Again, the next time there is a Regents opening, I urge interested individuals to apply for it. Ditto the next time there's an opening on the Regents Candidates Advisory Council.

Tsaikos,

Good morning!

Just a reminder that if you want to minimize the spam you receive, you may want to refrain from printing your e-mail address in public online forums like this one. I tell my users on HawaiiMoms.com the same. The reason is that spam computer programs constantly crawl the Web looking for e-mail addresses to add to their lists. If you must include your e-mail address in a post here, one way to try to outsmart those dastardly programs is to write out your address in an unconventional way. For example:

Wreck - hypothetical question...if you have a secure wireless network in your house how do you get the itouch to access it? also, do you have long fingernails?

Saw that Senior Bowl Interview with Colt - sounds like the arm strength thing could be an issue of timing. Sounds like he's rushing his drop back, not setting himself properly and throwing off his back leg - if that's the case, then yeah, his throws are going to look weaker.

BUT, if he slows down, gets into the groove, and sets himself, then maybe he can get his arm strength back up to what we're so used to seeing when he's in the gun.

I just found out that tonight's scheduled guest on Leahey & Leahey is Adam Leonard, UH Linebacker. I'm hoping he has some insight into the new coaching staff.

MattO - Did you watch the video of Andre Woodson? The video of both Colt and Andre don't tell the whole story but from what I saw, Colt is way better.

IMO, it's okay that Colt is not getting the bulk of the QB hype. He'll have his shot to prove himself in camp, and learn without the pressure of being the franchise QB.

Homey, I haven't seen it yet - is it in the highlights section on the senior bowl page? Heard Andre was all over the place in terms of accuracy.

MattO - the video is a link under the carousel of alternating pictures on the left hand side. I think it comes up when Colt's picture appears.

Brother Love - it's just like any other game console then. Thanks.

J-Dog - Yeah, it's good that Ryan is getting all the hype. Too bad he passed up on the Senior Bowl. I wonder if he'll be like Brady Quinn and drop in the draft.

Esme,

Thanks for the tip, I had a sinking feeling that all the SPAM getting into my gmail account and past the filter had to be from posting the Tsaikogate addy here.

Not such a good idea after all when "9jske8267dfes" starts posting here trying to sell sweet bread.

Couple Q's answered this morning by Linda Fehoko on the BC show with Don Robbs.

-Vili will indeed be back.

-To her knowledge, the Mike Post music is expected to stick around as well.

Personally I like that Vili will stick around, but could of done without the Mike Post music after TD's and the Warrior Strut.

Maybe if the sound system at ALOHA was better it could make a difference.

If anything I would of liked to see them use the Warrior Strut music during the time when Vili gets out of the tunnel and starts pumping up the crowd then the conch shell blows three times and the band is lined up at the tunnel and the team comes out to "Co-ed".

In Hawaii, to hear "warriors" means UH, I can understand the feelings of many to leave off the Rainbow portion of the full name. In the mainland there are lots of warrior mascots. Teams such as Marquette who used to have an American Indian mascot wimped out leading to the nondescript warriors. Other politically correct institutions have done the same thing going from an Indian reference to Warrior.
If a person mentions the RainBow Warriors, instantly you know they're speaking of just one team Hawaii. Be unique, save the Rainbow.
On another note: The Oregon Ducks with a recruiting budget of $800,000, due to Phil Knights open wallet and available Nike corporate jets, spends 4 times the money Oregon State University Beavers are able to spend.
Oregon breaks many new NCAA recruiting rules that were written specially for them.
Example: #1 Highlight films made with the recruits high school number computer enhanced on the jersey of the wide receiver, QB, defensive end, etc making a great play on the highlight film. #2 Oregon has a team jersey, one side home and one side away laying on the table when recruits have their first lobster and steak dinner as a group. #3 If the visit happens during the basketball season when a home game is to be played, the recruits wearing their name Oregon jerseys run onto the court as the announcer reads their names, high school, and stats, and the crowd goes nuts. #4 Players with or without parents receive corporate jet treatment to and from Eugene, with the reasoning that Eugene is hard to get to and from major US cities. Parents have to reimburse Oregon the cost of the lowest priced coach ticket on the route. At times 10 private jets will be in the air flying kids to or from the Oregon campus. Check out flightaware.com on a recruiting weekend t see the traffic at quiet Eugene Airport perk up. Lydell Hamilton, a pastors son from San Diego, returned home in mid-visit to Oregon, because his host players tried to force him to go to a strip bar. He immediately flew home and signed with San Diego St. The comments he made about alcohol, arranged sex, and the strip bars, opened up the world of Oregon football to the world. Did any rogue coaches or players lose their scholarships of jobs as they did at Colorado? No, nobody messes with Oregon Football.
I know BYU is not the favorite school in the minds of UH football supporters, but wasn't it nice to see the Ducks shot down by BYU 38-8 a year ago?

"Scott Wright of NFL Draft Countdown appears to be seeing a different Colt Brennan than the Rivals crew:

The headliners of the South team are the quarterbacks so why don't we start there. To be honest nobody stood out, although if you put a gun to my head I'd say Hawaii's Colt Brennan looked the best, although just by the narrowest of margins. I actually found a spot on the sideline where the quarterbacks were throwing 20 yard outs right in my direction to try and gauge arm strengths and it was almost too close to call. Kentucky's Andre Woodson and Tennessee's Erik Ainge seemed to float their throws a bit whereas Brennan gets them there on a rope. Brennan also showed the ability to fit balls into a tight spot although he seemed a bit indecisive at times."
