Not too late for Colt; Lawrence Wilson gets drafted

It admittedly wasn't a very good Senior Bowl for Colt Brennan.
Despite being named the South's captain (in voting by teammates), he played in three series — two of which ended in turnovers, including an interception.
Colt was sick last week, and lost some weight.
Now he plans to return to California to train, and to gain weight and strength. He has several more opportunities — at next month's NFL combine, at the Pro Day in mid-March, and at private workouts.
The one things scouts won't ignore is his body of work in college. There aren't many QBs as accurate as Colt.

* * *

Former UH defensive lineman Lawrence Wilson was selected by Texas in the seventh round of the All American Football League draft, our friend Jon Nielsen reported.
The Texas team is based in Houston.
The league is unique in that the commissioner is a former NCAA president, and players must have college degrees.
"One thing I want to tell everyone: Don't give up," said Wilson, who earned his bachelor's degree last May. "It's never too late to get your degree. You have to have your degree."
Wilson said he is the first college graduate in his family.
Wilson got married last July 7 — 7/7/07 — and the reception was last Saturday.

* * *

Greg McMackin is indeed committed to Hawai‘i.
Yesterday, he started house hunting.
This will be McMackin's second real estate purchase in Hawai‘i. He and his wife bought a house in 1999, his first stint as UH's defensive coordinator. They sold it when he accepted the job as Texas Tech's defensive coordinator in 2000.
Last year, when he returned as UH defensive coordinator, McMackin and his wife lived in a condo. Now as head coach, McMackin is looking to buy another house.
He owns two homes — in Lubbock and Las Vegas. He plans to sell the Lubbock house because his daughter and two grandchildren are moving from Lubbock to Honolulu.
Like his search in 1999, McMackin opted to go with Artie Wilson as his Realtor. It's a smart move. Wilson has lived in Hawai‘i since 1970, when he joined what would become the Fabulous Five basketball team.
Wilson said he thought he would live in Hawai‘i for only four years.
After earning his degree in four years, and receiving tryouts with the Portland Trail Blazers and an international team, Wilson received a post-graduate scholarship. He had planned to attend law school.
After working for the state, he earned his real estate license in 1976. Since then he has sold more than 1,000 houses.
"I love my job," Wilson said. "My main goals are to be a good husband and a great father."
Wlson also helped found the UH Letter Winners Club, and has chaired the Juvenile Diabetes foundation.
As for those youthful plans of staying here only four years? "I'm here for good," Wilson said.

* * *

For their good deeds last week, Barry Markowitz and Liz Kauai are blog captains for this week.
Liz gets "member" status for the week (or until management finds out and makes me pick up trash on the highways).

I am not surprisee JJ left. I read in the newspapers in 2004 he was depressed. Only Mouse Davis coming to join him lifted his spirits. And Jerry Glanville arriving the following yr lifted his spirits too. So I believe he wanted to depart that long ago. I hope he is happy. Sungods departure puzzles me. He totally embraced the polynesian culture and loved Hawaii to death. I guess he feels he owes JJ his loyalty for hiring him as a GA.

I wrote to Bobby Curran and he never responded. I wrote to him again sev yrs later and no response. It was Kevin Hashiro who wrote to me. Such a kind and wonderful guy. Its not unusual on air personalities to be cold. But Kevin is the exception. Such a shame 1420 radio let him go. I hope some other station picks him up.

Horses and stables are allowed in Maunawili as well as Waimanalo and Kahalu`u all the way up the Windward coastline - including kahukuland - and along the North Shore. There are even a few permitted use lots in Palolo and Kalihi Valleys still remaining but most likely they're not on the market and never will be.

Great volleyball game last night - keep your eyeballs on Joshua Walker, the freshman outside hitter throughout the season and in the years to come. I swear that there were times that he jumped so high that he could have cleared the net with ease.

How come this guy isn't playing varsity basketball somewhere?

As promised in yesterday's blog, here is the agenda for the Stadium Authority's meeting next Thursday. Note how many non-football & bib-swap meet events are being approved.

http://calendar.ehawaii.gov/calendar/html/event/2008/1/31/?
eventCollectionCode=dags_sa&viewtype= 2&currentViewtype=2&event=111101552&viewperiod=1

I hope that this doesn't break the blog. Remember to take out the spaces when you copy & paste it.

There are additional events scheduled at the facility listed elsewhere on the main website.

See above in the Site/Url line for Tuesday's joint committeee hearing notice regarding the transfer of the Stadium & its operation from the Department of Accounting & General Services to the University of Hawai`i.

Earlier today I spoke with Mark Takai and he urges that everyone SUPPORT this bill by sending in brief testimony by e-mail. Instructions are in the notice.

He requests that we be clear, on point, brief and not clog up our testimony with any other issue such as the departure of June Jones or the termination of Herman Frazier.

Perhaps Mark can take time out of his busy schedule to write something here on the blog which will provide additional advice.

WHY NOT START HERE, MAC?
Growing up near the Mormon-dominated town of Laie, Hawaii, on the north shore of Oahu, Anthony "Ants" Siilata figured he would eventually play college football at the University of Utah, following a pipeline of Kahuku High players to attend either Utah or Brigham Young.
Teammate Benji Kemoeatu is "sailing on the same ship," Siilata said, after both visited Utah's campus last weekend. Kemoeatu's older brothers, Chris and Ma'ake, starred before moving on to the NFL.
But other schools - most notably Oregon State of the Pac-10 - are heavily recruiting the powerful linemen, and have made strong pitches for their services, despite reports (that Siilata refutes) that the duo orally committed to the Utes last Sunday.
Siilata said Thursday that he and Kemoeatu will visit OSU this coming week, while Tachibana will check out Hawaii's campus.
The players' stories illustrate how coveted Polynesian football players - formally referred to as Pacific Islanders - have become, not just to Utah and BYU, but to schools in the major conferences.
"Polynesian players are very important to our success," said Paul Tidwell, recruiting coordinator at BYU, which, is believed to be in the running along with USC for linebacker Uona Kavienga, one of the top Polynesian players in the country. "They are good athletes as well as good people. It is a great connection to have. There has
always been a rich tradition at BYU with the Polynesian athlete, and we love them in our program."
Utah coach Kyle Whittingham echoed those sentiments a few weeks ago, saying that the Utes will continue to focus their recruiting efforts on Hawaii, Utah and California, states with a high percentage of Polynesians. And Weber State coach Ron McBride, who is largely credited with opening the pipeline of Polynesians when he was at Utah, said they are critical to a program's success.
"They are just tough, hard-nosed, hard-working kids," McBride said. "Awesome kids."
Utah's own Lynn Katoa of Cottonwood High recently chose Colorado, eschewing big dogs Texas, Oklahoma and LSU. Neither BYU nor Utah had much of a shot at Katoa, referred to in recruiting lingo as a five-star recruit, the best of the best.
Siilata said just a few days after he returned from Salt Lake City he received an in-home visit from Utah assistant Kalani Sitake, and he expects a visit from Whittingham this week. Tidwell said BYU defensive coordinator Jaime Hill was in Hawaii last week, and head coach Bronco Mendenhall will make the trip this week to meet with a defensive back (presumably Shiloah Te'o) who already has committed.
In other words, the local schools spare no expense in keeping the pipeline going.
"There is such a high percentage of Polynesian members of the [LDS] church, that it is a natural thing for us to recruit some of them," said BYU offensive coordinator Robert Anae, who grew up in Hawaii. "And a lot of them love to play this game, so we get a pretty good pick of pretty good athletes that can keep in line with the Honor Code as well."
However, Anae, when asked specifically about the difficulties of recruiting Polynesian athletes, broached a subject that is not often discussed publicly by college coaches, but is apparently substantial enough to at least generate a name.

Oral commitment
It is called the Poly Commit - the notion that a so-called oral commitment from a Polynesian player at times cannot be taken literally.
Anae and Kahuku's Siilata acknowledged that it exists to a degree, while McBride and others called it utter hogwash. BYU's Tidwell politely declined to discuss it.
The topic has surfaced locally because of what has happened with the reported commitments of the Kahuku players to Utah and with Kavienga, who was quoted by the Web site totalbluesports.com as saying he had committed to BYU, only to visit USC a few days later.
"It is veryScout.com to single out a particular group such as Polynesians for making soft commitments or de-committing when white kids and black kids often do the same thing," said Chris Fetters, a Scout.com recruiting analyst who has covered Hawaii, Utah and the Pacific Northwest for more than a decade.
Certainly, players of all races and ethnicities have been known to de-commit or visit another school after giving their word. Bingham's four-star tight end Austin Holt went on trips to Stanford and Florida, for instance, after committing to BYU nearly a year ago.
Hamani Stevens, a four-star Polynesian recruit from Hemet, Calif., who has narrowed his choices to BYU and Oregon, was puzzled by the mere suggestion of a difference, as was Bingham's Iona Pritchard, who has committed to BYU.
Siilata's take?
"That's exactly what it is. Exactly," he said. "It is kind of hard to explain it to other people. You have so much respect for the coaches, and then they ask [for a commitment], and it is such a hard answer. They've done so much for me as it is, bringing me on this trip and all. I don't want to say, 'not yet.' It is not just me, it is every Polynesian kid, you know? That's it. That's what it is."
BYU's Anae explained that Polynesian youngsters are taught from birth to respect authority figures, so it can be difficult for them to say no. They end up committing to every coach they visit, then sort it all out on signing day.
"They don't go around shooting that authority figure the straight shot," he said. "It is actually offensive in the culture to tell someone in authority something they don't want to hear."

Soft commitments
Anae puts some of the blame on the coaches - as does Scout.com's Fetters - for "hearing what they want to hear" and putting too much stock into a Polynesian player's favorable response.
"An over-eager coach claims the kid has committed, when in fact the kid was probably indecisive, and the coach tilted it one way or the other," Anae said.
McBride said soft commitments and de-commiting are not unique to any one culture.
"I have had some of those [Polynesian] kids tell me something, and they stay right with it. And I have had other kids tell me what they are going to do, and then they go home and take a trip and you don't know they are taking the trip.
"Usually, when a kid commits, if you get the family, the coach at the school and the kid all in one room, and everyone is one the same page, usually it sticks, whether it is a Polynesian kid or whomever."

PACIFIC ISLANDERS' COMMITMENTS

Player High School/Juco College
Derek Tuimauga Bingham Utah
Sealver Siliga Copper Hills Utah
Kendrick Moeai Copper Hills Utah
Siaki Cravens Temecula, Calif. Utah
Aiona Key Mt. San Antonio CC Utah
Michael Alisa Timpview BYU

Iona Pritchard Bingham BYU
Jessie Taufi Long Beach CC BYU
Tolu Moala El Camino CC BYU
Solomone Kafu Rio Linda, Calif. BYU
Masi Tuitama Pacifica, Calif. BYU
Tevita Hola Granger/Snow BYU

Note: At least four other Pacific Islanders have committed to BYU or Utah, but are not listed above because they have visited other programs or will visit other programs after making the pledge.

I HAVE NO IDEA why JJ wanted to recruit in Texas, the Poly kids are more disciplined, family oriented respecting their elders, and just darn good players. UH is not even in the running and NEVER WAS for each one of the above kids. I mentioned that Norm Chow owned Kuhuku High School until he had a disagreement with the then head coach at KHS and stopped recruiting there for 6 years, not one player signed with BYU, while utah made up for Norm's thinskinned lack of KHS attention.
The Warriors have to get the best of the Hawaii and west coast Poly kids, and doing so will turn this team into a very deep and very talented team able to compete with anyone. It does bother me that Mac and staff have not been trying to visit these kids hoping to change minds. Someone mentioned a group effort in giving UH the money from a private fund to help recriuiting. WE can do so, the incorperation process was laid out by a poster. I will add in $5,000 to go directly into the recruiting budget. The upper campus can't touch the money or add it into the overall budget if its given from a private, non-profit with strings on how the money is to be used. The 5 bills isn't going to put us into the $800,000 Phil Knight, Oregon class but we can quadruple the $50,000 quick.

I dismissed all the baloney, downrating Colt. Every year some kid coming in from a school no one follows becomes the media darling. This year Delaware's Joe Flacco, is that guy. At the same time, the previous stud QB gets knocked down with all sorts of subjective garbage. With that in mind, Colt is going to do fine, being drafted in the second round and having a good chance to play for an Atlanta, Jacksonville, Carolina, etc.
With every kid getting 15 plays, Colt will be back. Booty has been a bust, Ainge has had such an awful 5 years at Tenn, he got 4 OC's fired, the offense hadn't a spark, his stats will made you cry in disgust. The rules on receiver coverage give the QB's a good chance to look good, but Ainge will not be drafted above Colt regardless of what happens today. The running game is helping Ainge right now. I think Colt will be back on the next series maybe finishing the game.
I have a chance to work in Indy at the combine doing physicals and strength tests. This spring, I've been assigned the wide-outs. Colt has a big upside If he gets into the weight room. What he can't do in the evaluations, all-star games, and at the combine; is to have the deer in the headlights look and more importantly get tossed like a ragdoll.
If you're interested I can file daily reports on what I see in Indy.

Matt Ryan is fine, I'd still take Colt & I'm not saying that just because I'm a UH fan. I would have followed Colt if HE was the one from Delaware. The routes that they're asking Colt to throw are all downfield 20-30 yard routes. When Angie was in (Tenessee QB) they called plays that were much shorter/quicker routes. Why can't they call some of these just to get Colt some completions? Honestly, if i had to rate his performance between 1 and 5...5 being the best i'd HAVE to say 2. I'll stay with the second round. Colt has to get to the combine, while many guys who think they are already first round picks won't be going and risking having a bad combine. Colt can show the nay sayers who he really is by going to all the in house evaluations at the various teams. He stated the year being rated below Booty and the kid from Louisville, he will be drafted higher than either of those kids and Ainge. This negativity all comes from the Sugar Bowl and every analyst or wannabe parrots what the others are saying as if they scouted Colt extensively. The arm strength issue is crap, we all know that yet Colt is being ripped for having a weak arm, since when? The almost INT was a mistake by the wideout who was trying to be cute and make a circus catch, the pass was good.
John Beck who on YouTube tossed a 75 yard frozen rope, ON HIS KNEES, was also accused of having a weak arm last year. It's easier for the know-it-alls to be negative, and draw unfounded conclusions on two games without seeing any other Hawaii games on tape or live.

The Dolphins have officially left Mobile. Jeff Ireland and crew have seen enough from the practice, and interviewed enough players (over 100). They believe they have a good feel for the talent and makeup of the players who are here, so home they went.

Most teams don't stick around for the game, considering they get every second of film from the practices and the game on their video systems from the NFL.

Off topic, but looking around for articles about Warrior players I found a note about a former UH basketball player.

Most everyone who follows girls basketball in California has heard of Steve Smith, the girls coach and athletic director at Windward in Los Angeles, who got his team to the Division IV state championship in 2006, losing 66-56 in overtime to Sacred Heart Cathedral of San Francisco.

What most people don't know unless they cover girls basketball closely and follow the club circuit, is that Steve's dad, Mike, the patriarch of the Smith family, has been around the girls and women's basketball scene for over 30 years.

Currently, this Marin resident who has lived in the small town of Fairfax since 1976, is the head coach at Marin Academy in San Rafael and loving every minute of it.

The elder Smith was a basketball prodigy in his youth at Northwestern High in Detroit, and after serving time in the military, he wound up at the University of Hawaii where he once again lit up the scoreboard.

A third round draft pick of the Milwaukee Bucks in 1968, Smith never saw the NBA after twice tearing up a knee that even the famous Dr. Robert Kerlan couldn't put back together enough for him to play.

Mike instead took a job with the federal government and after retirement found his way into coaching. He started as an assistant in the women's program at Santa Rosa Junior College, and then moved to San Domenico School in San Anselmo where he was the head coach at the all girls' school.

When son Steve got the men's head coaching job at Dominican College (now Dominican University) in San Rafael, Mike became an assistant. Then, when Steve moved on to the WNBA in Phoenix as an assistant, Mike took a job as a consultant to the women's pro league.

Colt was "hard luck" today in the Senior Bowl. He looked good under center and threw some nice short/medium passes. His pick was unfortunate and a well spotted pass was stripped from the receiver. I saw three bad thows. Colt was also sacked due to poor OL blocking.

Unfortunately for Colt, the other QBs looked pretty good including Ainge (lower ranked) and Booty (also lower ranked). The advantage that these guys have is that they look tough and Colt looks frail.

However, Colt looked very poised and if it is true that his practices will count heavily, he might go in the first day of the draft. I doubt he is a 1st round pick.

Sporting News rates the non-BCS teams.

1. BYU. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the new non-BCS monster. The Cougars haven't lost a Mountain West game the last two years. And it's only gonna get better under Bronco Mendenhall.
2. Hawaii. Time will look back fondly on what June Jones did in 2007. Still, it's difficult to get images of that Sugar Bowl thumping out of my head.
3. Boise State. Sure, the Broncos lost to East Carolina in the Hawaii Bowl, but Boise State remains the hippest non-BCS school in the nation.

6. Fresno State. Pat Hill is a man's-man coach. And he has a man's-man program. I only wish more programs had Hill's cojones.

21. Nevada. Chris Ault is to non-BCS coaches what JoePa is to BCS coaches.

24. San Jose State. Funny how winning seems to follow Dick Tomey wherever he goes.

List of the 20 worst college football programs.

1. Florida International 1-11, 1-6 Sun Belt. Here's all you need to know: FIU scored 14 TDs all season. Hawaii scored that many burping after pregame meals.

2. Idaho 1-11, 0-8 WAC. The one win -- against Cal Poly. Thank goodness for Cal Poly. Here's a tip, Vandals: Keep those guys on the schedule.

7. SMU 1-11, 0-8 C-USA. The Mustangs sport a 10-game losing streak, tied with Minnesota and Idaho for longest in the nation. So SMU has that going for it ... which is nice.

11. Utah State 2-10, 2-6 WAC. The Aggies closed the season with two wins! But here's a dirty little secret: They opened the year with 10 consecutive losses. Shhhhh.

17. New Mexico State 4-9, 1-7 WAC. Don't be fooled by those four wins -- two came vs. Southeastern Louisiana and Arkansas Pine-Bluff. Bet you didn't know they had teams -- or even were schools.

Even Mike Mayock tore colt up on the senior bowl broadcast, colt embarrassed himself.

Fresno State could be losing its offensive coordinator...this would be a big loss in my opinion, especially right before NLI day.

University of Alabama football coach Nick Saban is reportedly going to fly to Tucson, Ariz., today and meet with Fresno State offensive coordinator Jim McElwain about the opening on his staff.

Brian Curtis of CSTV.com reported Saturday that both sides believe a deal could be reached. If that name looks familiar, it’s because Curtis co-wrote Saban’s book, “How Good Do You Want To Be?”

The Eastern Washington guy got UH's recruiting budget wrong.

More telling, however, was the quote from Eastern Washington associate athletic director Don Ross:

“We’re not high-paying, and our budgets aren’t high,” Ross said. “Did you watch the Sugar Bowl? You know when they were talking about Hawaii having a $100,000 recruiting budget and Georgia having a $500,000 budget. Well we have a tenth of that.

Yes, Colt will be drafted. I don't think any logical person is still thinking he will be a 1st round pick but he will be drafted. He does too much well to not get picked and there's still a chance he could go 1st day, maybe 3rd round. If the Broncos were willing to use a 3rd round pick on a RB who hadn't played for a whole year and had real character issues (Clarret from a few years ago), I don't see one of the 32 teams not investing at least a 3rd-5th round pick on a QB that can what Colt can. He can put on the weight and work more from under center to get comfortable with his throws. Plus, he won't be asked to be a starter from day 1.

Whoever said Colt is even in the same vicinity as Timmie Chang needs a reality check. Overall in general, Colt is just a better person all around and even on the field. Yeah...it is one game...and Mayock is one scout. No excuses for Colt though, it wasn't a good game.

But again, it's not over until it's over. Ask Kurt Warner...I mean....from nobody in Arena Football...to sitting on the bench...to leading his team.

And I agree with Gigi...I think Colt has HUGE potential as a broadcaster/commentator for football. All the things those guys need, including charisma, Colt has in spades.

I wonder if QB recruits watched Colt in the Senior Bowl and have second thoughts about the JJ type of offense, i.e. being in the shotgun for three to four years. JJ really hyped Colt(I also think Colt is great) but he has really struggled this past month against top end competition. The same thing pretty much happened to Timmy. Maybe our pitch to QB recruits should be that if they play in our offense they won't be in the shotgun 99.9% of the time like they would at SMU. I'd use it as a recruiting tool ASAP while the kettle is still hot on the stove. Don't get me wrong, I really would love to see Colt succeed. C'mon brada we got your back.

He was quoted in saying that's what he heard during the Sugar Bowl broadcast and I can't remember exactly what was said about our recruiting budget, BUT the Maloofs did double what he previously had right?

As for this "systems" nonsense, everybody acts like UH was cheating, like they ran something that gave them an unfair advantage in building statistics. But think of how difficult it is to complete a pass when everybody knows you're going to pass. Colt completed better than 70 percent of his passes — for a career.

OFF-SPORTS TOPIC/CHANGE OF SUBJECT: My first cousin and his wife who are really Big Muckamuckas in Seattle will be in town next week and wants to take DrDoc and me out for dinner.

Since I know that expensive doesn't always equate with best, what are your recommendations? The only qualifications are that it must be a real restaurant, not take-out, and that the atmosphere be at a minimum casual but not tees and slippas, and preferably with a tropical/Hawaiian/ocean theme. The emphasis must be on food & service.

They're heading on over to Hawai`i the next morning so we can take some time to dine so anyplace where the tables are expected to turn over every hour won't be a good place.

BOOYAH!

I don't know if it's the cynical nature in me when it comes to the all the negative press towards the program's work on the field coming from "experts".

But I think logically wouldn't anyone with an ounce of logical thinking ability be able to understand that the object of football is to gain yardage in a pursuit of reaching the endzone.

IN keeping with what ST is saying, is there like some un-written rule saying that one must gain yardage but must RUN a certain amount of yards to be credible.

It's a joke indeed!

The running game has been like the foundation of American Football and it just seems like the "lodge/member's only/country club" mentality of those that refuse to think outside the box that scoff at a passing offensive system that gains yards and puts points on the scoreboard.

Oh yeah they want to say that a team that passes 90% of the time is "one-dimensional" ok I can see that, BUT when teams RUN the ball 90% of the time why are they considered "power offenses"? If anything LOGICALLY that ALSO looks like a one-dimensional team as well.

Biases, biases, and biases.

Laieikawai, our old 300 (?) series Roomba and our current 550 both will tap into obstacles and navigate around them. It's fun to put something in the middle of the floor, set Roomba to run at bedtime and then be the first one in the morning to see its little pathways on the carpet.

Two things I'm liking since we switched are:

New Roomba slows down on its second approach to something (keep in mind they go over the same areas several times).

New Roomba doesn't have the transmitter thing sticking up in the front so it can go under more low-lying stuff than (some of) the earlier versions.

The storm hitting San Diego right now is going to affect the golf tournament tomorrow. Looks like the winner of the tournament has basically already been decided.

Break out the umbrellas for rain, and the white flags for Tiger Woods.

Winning the Buick Invitational became a matter of when - not who - after Woods put on a clinic Saturday by hitting 17 greens in regulation, building an eight-shot lead and hoping he doesn't have to wait until Monday to collect a fourth straight title at Torrey Pines.

"I'm in second place. I'm not really in contention," Stewart Cink conceded. "He's just hard to beat right now."

Mercy might come from Mother Nature. Sunshine gave way to clouds late in the day, and the forecast Sunday was for heavy rain that could wash out the final round. Players would have to return on Monday if the course conditions and forecast allow.

PGA Tour tournament director Mark Russell said Woods with an eight-shot lead would have no bearing on the decision.

"There's no mercy rule," he said. "We're not playing Little League baseball. We'll see what happens. We might get lucky."

Reoccuring?Lingering?And if

During the Georgia game his right knee,on at least one

Looking at things objectively,
I can understand how his plant

Ok folks, so colt had an off day, well maybe not. From what I saw none of the QB's where all that great. They all seem to be having a not so good day. Also anyone basing his draft status on this game doesn't know to much about how the NFL works.

Colt will get drafted, in what round I don't know and it really doesn't make any difference, because the team that drafts him will be doing so for their future. Colt needs to go to a team that has a established QB, then spend a season or two as the number two QB or even number three, during which time he will be getting better at the NFL level of play.

Colts time will come within the next two to three years. During which time he can bulk up to 215 which I think is his right weight to be.

Hanohano Room at the Sheraton Waikiki. Haven't been there for awhile so can't vouch for the menu but I'm sure the setting is still astounding at night.

We're going to the Hau Tree Lanai tonight. I'll give you a report tomorrow.

Yes, I know, I know. We did go to Sam Choy's BLC this morning but today is a real anomaly as we hardly dine in town.
btw, WD, BLC was awesome and someplace you actually might consider for dinner with your cousin.

Maybe, Jacob Patek can join the same team as Lawrence Wilson.

Patek is majoring in history and will graduate in May.

His mother told me she really wants him to graduate. His sister left college before graduating.

But then I thought ... you know, not that funny. Because we know what it's like to be 0-12 and on the butt end of jokes. So I pledged never to even chuckle again at Florida Intl or any other struggling team.

Tommie, the ONLY garbage is yourself. Such a NARROW mind that does not have a clue on being an athlete and competing against competition regardless of level play. Colt Brennan will be SUCCESSFUL in ANY thing that he does. The young man has more then football carrying him to be GREATER for life. Sport is just an avenue and Mr. Brennan represents it well both athletically and academically. It is HATERS like you who know NOTHING of the game or played on a high level that can make erroneous statements that you do and then justify it by your support to some idiot broadcaster who is bitter and jealous just like you BECAUSE both of you are NON ATHLETIC ! The only embarrasment is yourself as Colt Brennan does not need his "autograph money" to survive he has GREATER qualities that goes way beyond your narrow thinking and will be HIGHLY sucessful in life then you will ever be. I was doing some research for another blog member and came across this article...I guess Google didn't catch it for me yesterday.

A state lawmaker wants to transfer management of Aloha Stadium to the University of Hawaii as a way to generate additional money for its athletic programs.

The chairman of the Aloha Stadium Authority board, who questions the idea, says the move wouldn't help the university that much since the stadium's current operating costs almost match its revenue stream.

House Bill 2429, introduced by Rep. Jerry Chang, D-S. Hilo-Keaukaha, chairman of the House Committee on Higher Education, wants to create a corporation under UH to "operate, maintain, manage and improve Aloha Stadium with the University of Hawaii as the major tenant."

The bill's language notes that the "secondary duty is to generate net income from Aloha Stadium that may be transferred to the intercollegiate athletics program of UH."

On Colt's struggle today ... sometimes I think that guy is just born under an unlucky star. From Colorado to the Sugar Bowl, maybe he's just destined to always have to fight his way to the top, while other people get stuff just handed to them. Notice I said "to the top," because that's clearly where he's headed ultimately. The patience and determination through adversity is what marks a true champion, a true man of character. This is what will bear out over time.

ST- actually, I think you're onto something there. Why not have a paint war to raise money for Athletics? It could be an auction to shoot HF or his successor with paintball guns. Imagine the lines of people who would line up and bid for that right if HF, Clapp, McNamara and compliance guy were lined up as targets? USC did a swimming race between Pete Carroll and Will Ferrell to raise buku money for USC. If paintball can't be done, even a dunking booth would be awesome. $5 a turn to have 3 chances at throwing and hitting the target to dunk any of the UHAD staff. I'd go in line at least a couple times. I don't know if McNamara's hair creates an oil slick when he gets dunked, so the Outdoor Circle may have something to say about that.

I have seen these type of people and they have ONE thing in common they NEVER succeeded in sports. They vent there frustrations and jealous behavior only because of there own insufficient dissapointment athletic career or non. Colt Brennan is GREAT a fine young man who emphasizes the epitomy of a FINE athlete and WONDERFUL person. Put Hawaii on the map and embrace the ALOHA spirit that gave Hawaii die hard fans the feeling of PROUDNESS representing Hawaii. A saviour to the football program and I am PROUD that he is an athletic brother like myself that represents the Aloha State with dignity and class. To all the Colt Brennan haters out there, everyone seems to forget if he didn't come back for his senior year he would be already in the NFL. He took a huge gamble in coming back to school and if you ask him about it he will never, ever say he regrets that decision. Yes, he had 2 bad games back to back but I do think he is worn down, who wouldn't be with the type of schedule he has had to endure the past few months. He is human.

I agree with RainbowCliff, a person of his character and success will succeed in whatever he does pursue, he is and always will represent the Warrior Pride he does have.

Way back in Sept. before the start of the season, my crew and I were eating lunch down at Hale Aloha Cafeteria. In walk Colt and his guys, like little girls we were in kind of both awe and giddy at the same time. He turns around and asks us "how's it going guys", like he's known us all that time. On more than one occasion while walking past him on campus he will stop to say "hi, how you doing?". So I too hate when people say things about Colt Brennan's character. He's always the first to give praise to other's, never one to take all the credit when they win, does take the losses hard, but always bounces back big time. He is and always be a winner. Like with Brady and Montana, the team that takes a change on him will find a diamond.

I guess Tommie missed the memo...there is more to life than football and certainly more to life than spending time kicking people when they are down.

Regardless of whether or not Colt plays in the NFL, I think the journey is has taken is nothing short of extraordinary. It goes so far beyond the Senior or the Sugar Bowl or even football in general. This was a guy that at one point made such a big mistake that it looked like he'd never get a chance to play football again. But it happened. And he led a team that seriously brought a state together. Nobody outside of Hawaii could ever possibly understand. Not many people in life will get to touch others like Colt got to during this past year. Regardless of the draft, nobody ever can take that from him.

Only one other player walked up to the guy coming back. That's the kind of man he is. It's a team, and he shows a leader's approach to the players. Joe Theisman had some interesting comments here.

Experienced quarterbacks are a commodity, and the Dolphins can’t afford to be without one. The Dolphins have John Beck and could draft another quarterback in April. They need a veteran.

“Eli Manning is a perfect example of what I’ve said for years,” Theismann said. “It takes four years to learn how to play the quarterback position as a general rule. Sure, there are exceptions to the rule. But it takes that amount of time for the process, for a team to be built around you.”

Tom Brady is the best of all-time: “The reason I think Tom Brady is the greatest that ever played was the same reason I thought Joe Montana was. I think Tom throws the ball better than anybody in football, but he won last year with no receivers. He set an NFL record with the receivers. So if he got them close with nobody and took it to new heights with somebody, then there’s your common denominator.”
Permalink 01/26/08 @ 18:39
Too many teams are doomed to be also-rans because there simply aren’t enough good quarterbacks to go around: “We have 94, 96 positions to fill on rosters. You’d be hard pressed out of 96 quarterbacks to sit down and say, ‘Forget about the Super Bowl. This guy gives me a chance to get into the playoffs.’ “

Despite the accepted maximum QB age going up seemingly each year, there’s a reason 40-year-old Jeff George couldn’t find any takers when he advertised a comeback a couple months ago: “Jeff George can’t even get a sniff because he was such a jerk. They’d take a 44-year-old Vinny Testaverde over a Jeff George. I think he could if he decided he wanted to listen to someone, but nobody’s taking a chance on him.”

Kevin Craft news!

Junior college quarterback Kevin Craft said this week that it's hard to beat new SMU coach June Jones' Run and Shoot offense.

It's a message SMU coaches hope recruits in Dallas, in the state and across the nation are paying attention to. Finding players that fit Jones' system is essential to SMU's recruiting efforts, along with establishing the Dallas area as a home base.

Craft, the ex-San Diego State quarterback who threw 44 touchdown passes last season for Mount San Antonio College in California, is SMU's top recruiting priority.

And the 6-5, 205-pound Craft seems to be favoring the Mustangs. He has eliminated Hawaii, the school he was probably headed to because of Jones. Craft's visit last weekend to SMU made a good impression.

"I really felt strong about them," said Craft, No. 61 on Rivals.com's Junior College Top 100. "I felt real comfortable with the staff. The school is unbelievable, and the facilities are top of the line. But most important is the coaching staff."

Craft, who has two years of eligibility remaining, said he probably would make his decision Monday or Tuesday. He visited UCLA this weekend, feeling an obligation after getting a scholarship offer from new coach Rick Neuheisel.

Craft is a main target for SMU, but with only four commitments and the Feb. 6 signing day less than two weeks away, the Mustangs' new staff is focused on ending with a good recruiting year. An emphasis is filling the rest of a class of what should be 18 to 21 recruits with players from the Dallas area.

"He's combing this area hard," Randy Ross, SMU's director of football operations, said of Jones. "He wants to recruit this area. He wants to recruit it so hard he's going to give every coach on the staff an area in Dallas."

Seems most of you are the proto-typical UH bandwagon jumper/supporter. Out and about displaying like a peacock when they are winning; and whining, pointing fingers and blaming when they are struggling.

Come on people! Either you support them or you do not. You cannot have it both ways. I applaud those season ticket holders who faithfully supported the Warriors though the hellacious years. Those are the true fans.

Got to watch the Senior Bowl with Stretch and UHfan808 today at Giovanni Pastrami in Waikīkī. Sorry if you weren't invited — it was really last minute.

My take on the game was that it was sloppy throughout, and that I didn't see anything that would lead me to change my scouting reports. Most of the QBs showed shoddy mechanics with their footwork — not just Colt.

* * *

Hurray for our captains! Now I'm off to dinner.

I understand, Rainbow Cliff, but no point in arguing with someone who is not coming from a place of logic. What can all that hateful ranting be but displaced rage, jealousy, disappointment? You're probably right: a failed athlete who can't stand to see someone else succeed and who is loved, not just for athletic achievement, but because he is a fine person who gives love back. Rather pity Tommie; it must be miserable to be so angry and spiteful.

ST - Save that garbage post when Colt sues that nimrod for slander.

BTW, I noticed during the game that the only badmouthing was directed at Colt from the announcers. Whenever another QB threw short, long, one-hoppers, they simply said "incomplete". But with Colt they ragged on his arm strength. Doesn't matter. He obviously had the respect of the entire South Team as they voted him the Captain.

My rule of thumb has always been this: A quarterback transitioning from college to the NFL needs at least one full year to sit behind a veteran and learn the offense. That's one FULL year. I love that the Bengals did that with Carson Palmer. Not every QB is Peyton Manning, who can just step in and throw for 26 TDs, and even then, he threw 28 INTs. Sadly, these guys get paid so much, you can't afford to sit them for a whole year.

I posted a pretty detailed interview of LaCount recently--I think it was in yesterday's blog. He is waiting for a Syracuse scholarship, but they have one person in front of him that will be deciding soon. He would be a good pickup for UH...I hope this weekend goes well!

Mike Nolan, who coached Colt at the Senior Bowl, is rumored to want to draft Colt in the 3rd round...possibly 2nd round. It is interesting to hear his opinion of the importance of the Senior Bowl game vs. practices.

Perhaps the biggest oddity of Senior Bowl week is that the game itself is rather anti-climactic.

Nearly all the NFL coaches and scouts who crowded this town at the start of the week returned home Wednesday night after the two teams completed their final workout in pads.

So how much does the game really matter in determining these players' draft fortunes?

San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Nolan, who is coaching the South team this week, admits that teams get a better sense of a player's potential from the practices than the actual game.

"The game has been less helpful to me in the past than the practices by a long shot, to be honest with you," said Nolan, who is coaching in this game for the third consecutive year. "There's constant interaction in practice. You're constantly talking with them, watching them compete, watching how they get in a competitive engagement.

"In the game it's a little bit more difficult. If the play's away, you don't really see it. In practice, you can really isolate. It's one-on-one, it's you and that man. In a game, if they drop back to pass and the quarterback's not going that way, it's really not as critical."

Even the players figure the hard part of their week already has ended. They've already participated in the interviews with various teams. They've noticed how the crowds of scouts in the bleachers grew smaller and smaller at the end of the week.

A look at last year's Senior Bowl supports Castille's assertion.

Penn State running back Tony Hunt was named the game's most valuable player after running for 39 yards and a touchdown in the North team's 27-0 victory, but he didn't generate the most buzz that week.

The players who earned the most attention instead were Nebraska defensive end Adam Carriker and Louisville defensive tackle Amobi Okoye, who delivered dominant performances in practices and went on to get drafted in the first round.

Garret, That's great news regarding Colt and the 49ers! Hope it's true. Being elcted team captain says a lot.

Two-year starter. Very tall with a thin build. Needs to upgrade his overall strength. Pocket passer with average quickness. Can slide from pressure, but is not very elusive. Doesn't look to run. Holds the ball a bit low, but has a fairly quick release. Lacks a strong arm. Doesn't rifle the long outs, but he's an accurate passer with a good feel for touch. Sails some throws and hangs some deep balls. Leader. Eyeballs his primary target at times, but shows the ability to come off and find alternates. Generally makes good decisions. Had a good Orange Bowl.

Kinda sounds like Colt doesn't it.

Colt is just a young man trying to make his way in a tough business, in a very mean world

Success always breeds contempt.

Colt is a good quarterback. Colt will also be a good NFL quarterback. He may not get drafted in the first round, and yes may or may not get drafted on the first day. However, judging talent in the NFL is an inexact science. You never quite know in the business what it is that you are going to get until you get to camp and the players put the pads on.

Like the saying goes some guys "look like Tarzan but play like Jane".

By the way' that blockquote above describes the sixth quarterback taken in the 2000 NFL draft, Tom Brady.

Like I said, an inexact science. I'd say Colt is in pretty good company.

Warrior98,

It looks like I mixed up 2 articles in my mind. In one, it predicted Colt would go in the 2nd or 3rd rounds. In the other, it predicted that the 49ers would take Colt in the 3rd or 4th rounds. So, it looks like I was 1 round off in my above post. Here is a repost of the article about the 49ers.

The past few years, we have seen Mike Nolan target players who played for him in the Senior Bowl. Which players, if any, on the North and South rosters will Mike Nolan and/or Lane Kiffin target in the first three rounds of the draft?

Shane P. (JBond93) from Pittsburgh

The Niners have definitely targeted Senior Bowl guys in recent years, selecting Patrick Willis and even trading up for both Manny Lawson and Joe Staley. It's a pretty safe bet that both San Francisco and Oakland will target and draft a number of the players they coached at this game and the one that really stands out for me is Colt Brennan to the 49'ers. In fact, I am officially going on the record and saying that the Niners will draft Brennan in the 3rd or 4th round. He is a good fit for their offense due to his quick release and you know Mike Martz will relish the opportunity to mold Brennan into a top NFL quarterback and show everyone what a genius he is. I also think Mike Nolan really likes Jacob Hester and Early Doucet. There isn't such an obvious pick for the Raiders but I would probably have to say Shawn Crable.

- Scott Wright, NFL Draft Countdown

Which QB had the most to prove this week, Joe Flacco or Colt Brennan???

Adam from Green Bay, WI

Both had a lot to prove but I'd probably say it was Brennan. System, arm strength, throwing motion, size, character... I could go on and on. With that said I think both Brennan and Flacco did a nice job this week and for the most part answered many of the questions people had.

- Scott Wright, NFL Draft Countdown

Who is the most charismatic player at the Senior Bowl? Which guy do you see as leaders among the players?

Matt from Chicago

Without question it's Colt Brennan. He is not only one of the most charismatic football players I have ever been around but maybe one of the most charismatic people period. He is extremely outgoing and people just seem to gravitate towards him.

Are there any players that had really great character and were very personable and easy to talk to?

Jake from Utah

Again it was definitely Colt Brennan. If I had to single out someone else it would probably be either Virginia Tech wideout Eddie Royal or Kentucky tight end Jacob Tamme.

Someone posted earlier about OL prospect LaCount making a visit. Who did he sign with out of high school? I don't think it was UH was it? It seemed in the past UH didn't really go after JC O-lineman, even ones that had signed with them but had to go the JC route to qualify. LaCount's size alone is impressive & I believe his brother played here too.

Phew- finally made it home.

Very, very sad. No details yet, but someone passed away in that accident. (And I would have been near there at 3:30pm if I hadn't taken a nap at my friends' house before starting out.)

Ke Akua is in charge. No worries for Colt. I believe he made his true impressions where and when he needed to. Playing hurt/sick is something the coaches understand. Being a born leader and one that is willing and able to be trained - well, that is something special.

The good coaches will consider him seriously. I, for one, continue to pray for him. All of us can benefit from the great vibes that surround that state of prayer.

Colt had to play as an individual today. We all know that Colt's true worth is being part of a team that BELIEVES. Not in a denominational way - in a universal, inclusive way. His gifts include the ability to inspire belief. The Patriots (not coincidentally) have that belief.

Colt has the rare gift of massive charisma and personal humility. It was born of adversity. That adversity prepared him to endure greater adversity. In the end, I pray that it will make him stronger and not overwhelm him.

GO COLT!!!
Make Memories!!!

Yeah, probably related to Barry too. haha I thought he might be Kahai's brother but not sure. I believe Kahai started out on the OL but moved to DL when he wasn't getting PT. The guy was strong as a bull. This LaCount is huge, 6'7" 290+. I don't think we've gotten really "long" OT's since Noa and Klemm. Uperesa and Esera were pretty close as book-ends. I forgot the name of the guy who left early and was drafted by the Seahawks. He was a physical specimen too. I guess those are what you call prototypical tackles - long reach, agile and strong.

I watched the video of Ryan and I was pretty impressed. Yes he starts with his rear in the air, but so what -- he's like a sprinter, and the tapes show a lot of great results.

I know Geordan was his linemate, so I kept looking for him too, and I'm sure he has a lot of good highlights, but I didn't think based solely on Ryan's tapes that GH distanced himself from Ryan in anyway. Some of those plays were actually humorous -- it looked like no one on the o-line wanted to block either one of them. One play, I think it was against St. Louis, no one blocked anyone and the entire defense nearly overran the play, even though the ball never left the qb. I was laughing at that one.

It will be really interesting to see how Ryan does. If he starts as a frosh that would be major. My guess is it would be a little overwhelming, but will pay off big time down the road.
