Sounds like a great recruiting season, especially considering all that's happened. Still shaking my head about how only one other Division I team recruited Greg Alexander. Good thing UH recruiters have a knack for finding hidden gems. Still hoping Graunke can win out the starting spot next year, but it never hurts to have two extra QBs competing for the job along with Funaki.

One question though. How many QBs does your typical Top 25 football program have on its roster? At some point, QB prospects would shy away if there's too many recruits on a team, and I'd guess it wouldn't help if the prospect has limited years of eligibility to begin with. Is four or five an ideal number?

Neither Rausch nor Alexander will be participating in spring practice when Ron Lee puts in his version of the offense. Tyler Grauke will be way ahead.

Great news about Alexander! Reading about how he wasn't recruited despite being a 4-star QB with amazing stats really was puzzling...great that UH found out about his availability by coincidence.

In their offense UH needs at least 2 game-ready QBs...may the best player get the job. Competition can only help the team, as the QBs will push each other to get better. Tyler's experience should give him the early advantage, but the new QBs should have their shot with new coaches running the offense.

Oh yeah, there's that too. Even Colt needed a full year to figure out the run-n-shoot. Will that be a disadvantage for the JC QBs, or might they be able to get up to speed as quickly as Dan Robinson?

Comment from: Lonomakana [Visitor]
I have to believe that Graunke will start. These guys won't be here this spring and there is too much to learn in such a short time. These signings will pay off next year when the two JC guys and Funaki will be battling. Maybe we can use Alexander like Florida used Tebow last year.

Our depth at every position makes us truly dangerous. Last year the Warriors proved this to be true. Take the starter out and someone will step up and man up immediately. And the REST of the TEAM will stay strong MENTALLY as well as physically.

Other teams have fallen apart when their go-to guy was hurt or unable to play.

ST,

The thing is, I cannot imagine any 4-star player (especially a QB) being unknown by colleges looking for a QB! Great job by UH...and hiding their interest in players was a good thing even before a Dallas school changed coaching staffs.

Anyway, SMU apparently has 27-29 players in their recruiting class and it looks like they didn't have a scholarship left. The funny thing is that the last time I checked (2 days ago), their 6 highest rated recruits were all defensive players!

I hear you, BowsForever. I'm sure the coaches will do what they can to get the new guys prepped. If they are bright, hardworking, and overwhelmingly talented, maybe they could step in, this year. I like Graunke and he's sure been patient. But if you have someone that is so much better and the rest of the offense will work hard for him, then I've got to give him a chance. Still, my bet is on Graunke for the starting job.

SMU has to watch out.
Say, if you grayshirt at UH. You can be a part-time student in the fall for a couple of thousand.
At SMU, tuition/room/board is north of $40,000 a year. That will make it difficult to over-recruit, to have people grayshirt and, especially to attract walk-ons.
A Colt Brennan doesn't walk on a SMU for a semester. And a Chad Owens doesn't pay his way for two years.

ST, why is SMU and JJ going after players we are going after. In your article today you said that Rausch got a call from SMU when he was on his visit in Hawaii, does JJ have no idea on how to recruit on his own? JJ would of easily gone after Alexander if he knew we were after him. That's why i don't get him attending the Na Koa dinner, JJ is no longer a friend but a foe.

I agree. SMU also got a player or two from Arkansas.

The trouble is that in Texas most of the recruiting goes on in the summer before player's senior year. Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, etc. normally have most or all of their recruiting done by the Fall. I know that Texas rarely seems to get ANY additional recruit after August...they lost out on the RB they were after today. Too bad that RB's uncle is at Colorado.

Great recruiting class, relatively speaking or otherwise.

Did I hear correctly on this morning's Jeff Portnoy minus J. Portnoy + starring Kanoa Leahy and Rob DeMello that: 1) the silver helmets are gone? :( Was at least a way to see the "H" quite well . . . that and hope we still have the Raider nation/Warrior nation on board, heh; 2) white pants are gone.

Hats off to Coach McMackin. He said he'd go visit the houses, he did, and prospects were impressed.

Coach McMackin is the McMan.

How's this (for all you Clash of the Titans fans): Release the McMackin!!!!! Hey, any t-shirts come out of this, I want royalties!!!!! :) :) :)

it was a great morning and Doris did a great job with all the 'late additions' to the LOI signing with Mayor Mufi.

so good to see these young men and 2 young women securing the collegiate education. awesome.

saw so many old friend and good friends including Princess, Barry, Homey, Big Wave, and all the coaches and parents.

although Da Beast is now a Wildcat, Hawaii will always be home. mahalo for the good thoughts and prayers.....7 months til THE GAME...but who's counting? haha

Now it's time to get down to the real work of securing the $$$ and the broadest possible community support needed by the entire University of Hawai`i system so that the Athletic Department in all 19 of its varsity women's and men's sports can bring back home all the trophies & honors which are out there.

When we work together we can achieve anything.

Am appearing before the House Finance Committee on a job-related bill this afternoon. Will find out if the House's rules have changed for contacting individual committee members prior to the hearing. With one-third of the House sitting on the Finance Committee, this makes it the most powerful committee in the whole Legislature.

Mack's going to leave the position open for now. The intent is to hire a second o-line coach who can help with the running backs. But right now Rolo, Stutzmann, Smith and Ron Lee can do the job. It's not going to matter until the season starts, when UH would like another pair of eyes in the coaches' booth.

GREAT RECRUITING CLASS BY A BUNCH OF GREAT COACHES - FLORIDA HERE WE COME!!!

Personal opinion and with all due respect to Graunke, but I believe Inoke is a better quarter back - off-season work out will truly be the turning point for both - 2 JC qbs coming in is another incentive to train smart and hard.

I hope that all the returning players are in the "training mode" for April and the 2008 season - believe UH will go to another BCS bowl in 2008 - NOLA will be fun (want to play the SEC champ or #2) - excellent gauge of where Warriors stand.

I'm new here and reading most of the posts, it seems like everyone knows everybody. Not only that, but it everyone seems to have an incredible amount of knowledge and info on the UH warrior team and ancillary topics (i.e. who's a great recruit, who's recruiting who...basically the scoops on other competition). The thing that impresses me the most is the aloha, support, and faith that people have for our team. And I think McMackin gets it even though he wasn't raised here. What student recruit would'nt want to be in this environment? What parents of student recruits wouldn't be reassured that their sons won't be taken care of? And if the student/player has the skills and his ambition is to go on to next level, he will. The other thing is UH, has to make sure our warriors continue to play top teams like the 2008 schedule. I think that will definitely help with recruiting too. Anyway, good to learn from all
of you.

Al,

I agree with your post at 12:07. If JJ left any earlier UH would not have had Mack and the new coach would not have been in a position of strength after a Sugar Bowl season and statewide support.

To me, it seems like Mack is the right person to take UH to the next level...much warmer personality, more inclusive of others who may have been upset with JJ for some of the changes (though Mack is staying with Warriors, JJ will be the target for fans of the Rainbow name, etc.). Mack has the right personality and desire to recruit locally, which is a huge key for UH to get to the next level.

-Made relationships with local high school coaches
-Begun the search for a new AD
-Made progress in getting much needed money to the athletic department via the legislature

if he can catch the ball and run, a wide receiver or make that a tall receiver.

if he gains more than 45 lbs then let em go, let em gain some more and he could either be a rush de or left tackle.

SMU recruiting and getting some of the recruits that had committed to Hawaii:

As I stated people have or will take things or other people with them to their new place of employment.

Should we be thankful that JJ did not actively go after our local boys? Or was it that he knew his chances were slim and none?

Anyone has any info on these questions?

Wow, very suspicious story but very sad if this kid got "duped".
It was quite a scene in the Fernley (Nev.) High gym on Friday. A 6-foot-5, 290-pound football player, seated at a table with his coach beside him, was making his college selection before a cheering crowd. On the table before him were a pair of baseball caps -- one from the University of California and one from the University of Oregon.

The player reached for the blue Cal hat, bent the visor, and placed it on his head, signifying that he was accepting a scholarship to play at the school and would officially sign his letter-of-intent today

Neither California, Oregon -- nor any of the handful of other college football programs mentioned by Kevin Hart -- had offered him a scholarship. In fact, some of the schools he mentioned had never put his name into their databases to send players recruiting literature

"Was the kid [duped] by somebody impersonating somebody and that got him to where they were?" said Eddie Bonine, executive director of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association and a former principal at Fernley High. "There are some red flags for me: One, at no time did any coach or representative speak to the head coach at that high school; two, you would ask, has the student-athlete, thinking he's going to be a Division I athlete, did he pursue the NCAA Clearinghouse since his sophomore year? That didn't happen. Or did the student-athlete make this all up and got in too deep and couldn't turn it around?

"Either way you shake it, it's not pretty. And very strange."

I've seen JJ wear that pink H shirt many times (even at the arena for the bowl announcement). He wears what he wears. I don't think I've ever seen that pink shirt for sale anywhere.

And what team's colors are pink besides The Hart Foundation, Bret "the Hitman" Hart and Jim "the Anvil" Neidhart. Oh can't forget the mouth of the South, Jimmy Hart.

Shout out to COACH RON and COACH ROLO. Really really good and leaving good vibes all over. Suggestion: get the new guys to write back to their school coaches after they've been here 1 month, letting them know 1st hand how they are doing. Address, envelope, some blank paper. Force em. They'll thank you down the road. And so will their former coaches. I know Coach Mack is on it.

d1shima,

I posted that yesterday morning. The story is even worse because this morning the news came out that the player's parents were fooled by someone who claimed to be a "recruiter" who charged them money to help get them a scholarship offer from big-name schools. That "recruiter" took their money and is hiding now.

I posted that update this morning...near the bottom of the last blog.

The better UH gets, the more recruiters from across the nation will be looking to pick up our high school prospects, and the bigger and more complicated Doris' job will get. Will she need more support / funding / staff to cover it all? Does she have enough now?

Repost from the last blog.

The Lyon County Sheriff's Department acknowledged late Tuesday a third party was allegedly involved in the recruiting gone bad of Fernley offensive lineman Kevin Hart.

Hart claims, in a report taken Saturday by the LCSD, that a Kevin Riley falsely represented himself as a recruiter -- a middle man to big-time college football programs -- and led the 6-foot-5, 290-pounder and his family to believe there were scholarship offers available when there were none.

Obtaining money with a false pretense is the charge on the report at this time, said Deputy Dan Lynch, who took the report. Finding Riley could be difficult, though.

"It's an ongoing investigation but we have no suspect at this point and no info to identify a suspect," Lynch said.

Lynch declined to say how much money the Hart family paid Riley, or how the purported recruiter kept in contact with Hart and Hodges.

Aloha Tsaiko Friends!

Gung Hee Fat Choy!!

It's February and let me tell you, it took the whole month of January to recharge my batteries and recover from the awesome perfect season, Sugar Bowl experience, JJ's departure, Mack's emergence, etc....

Kazz -

Your 12:34 post was right ON!! Well written and expresses my thoughts precisely. During the few quiet moments I have to stop and reflect on the past few months, we have all been a part of a special chapter in the history of UH athletics. What a ride!! I'm strangely calm, confident and VERY pleased with the lightning fast and decisive decisions that Coach Mack has made from the get go with regards to filling asst coaches' positions and recruiting, to mention a few.

The anxiety and trepidation I initially felt with regards to how our first game of the 2008 football season in Florida would go has been replaced by growing excitement and confidence that the recruits who have committed to UH will fill vacant slots very well. Great job of recruiting!!

Koakane -

Your 9:57 post addressed to Midori7 stopped me cold. First James was hitting on her and now you, too?? I'm telling... Nah, just kidding, hope you were, too.

Kekoa -

Sorry I might have missed some important posts from you re your Dad's well-being?...my best regards to him for quick and complete recovery, if he is ailing.

I wonder how similar or different Ron Lee's offensive schemes, plays, calls, signals, etc. will be from JJ's. If there are similarities then I would think that Tyler, Inoke, and the returning QB's would have an advantage. Especially after going through the steps and motions during spring practice.

Since both Rausch and Alexander are familiar with the 3, 4, and 5 receiver sets they shouldn't have a problem adjusting to Lee's offense. If both QB's can be here for the summer workouts then it should be awesome competition for the starting QB spot. I'm assuming that both QB's still need to complete classwork and won't be here for sping practice.

Maybe we will score so many points with lopsided victories, everybody can play every game---sort of like platoon system---to keep everybody "fresh"...
Go Warriors!

I'm curious -- does anybody know the demographics of game attendance? Wonder if it's skewed to the 20-30 somethings or older than that.

02/06/08 @ 15:33

From my observations at Aloha Stadium:

60% - Ages 35-above
30% - Ages 18-34
10% - Ages 17 or below

From my observations at the SSC in general of all games played there (i.e. Men's and Women's basketball and volleyball):

70% - Ages 35-above
25% - Ages 18-34
5% - Ages 17 or below

DPK- it all goes back to jojo winning an XL shirt. I won an L shirt and traded with her. After that, homey would refer to me as XLiz, as in extra-large liz.
I started referring to him as xs or extra small - homey. See?

So I always look for a way to incorporate an xs moniker for homey (thank goodness he's dog training and won't see this boring explanation). Earlier, he said to chawan_cut - "in the supine position I am a couple of inches taller." So I said, (xs)upine-homey.

Now, aren't you sorry you asked???? BWAHAHAHA!

34-ish...

17-ish...

But this is just from what I see and maybe my numbers are off because I have spent the past two seasons "looking" for older people just to get a sense of what's happening there.

I think what started it was my friend getting hit with a newspaper and some elderly individual yelling at him to sit down...

But hey, we don't need to go "there" again.

i know that Da Beast will leave everything he has on the field, that is the only way he knows how to play. UH will have a bigger, stronger, faster team....but you never know.

Life in a private school is tough. The demands made by the instructors (especially at the college prep schools) can be crazy. Now add to that the demands and expectations made by coaches and parents. Something has to give.

For some students sports comes first simply because they excel in it and struggle in academia. Others excel in academia but struggle in sports.

Sometimes, sadly, decisions must be made for a brighter future. And, sports, sometimes, is seen as the vehicle to get there.

I guess, I really do not blame kids for leaving for the public schools. They have to go where they will be most successful.

Okay now, please, everyone. Please do not accuse me of elitism. Because there are a lot of great and very intelligent students in public schools!

Others who had D's and could not participate in sports because their Cumm GPS's were too low transfered out and suddenly earning A's and could participate in sports and other extra-curricular activities.

The Nevada guy now admits that he made up the whole recruiting thing! After having his press conference, involving the police, and changing his story a couple of times about a recruiter/scammer.

The story of the "recruitment" of a little-known Nevada offensive lineman took another bizarre twist Wednesday, with the player admitting everything was a hoax.

Kevin Hart, a 6-foot-5, 290-pounder from Fernley (Nev.) High, apologized in a statement issued Wednesday – National Signing Day – through the Lyon County School District.

"I wanted to play D-1 ball more than anything," the statement said. "When I realized that wasn't going to happen, I made up what I wanted to be reality. I am sorry for disappointing and embarrassing my family, coaches, Fernley High school, the involved universities and reporters covering the story."

Last Friday, Hart committed to California in a ceremony at the Fernley High gym. Most of the student body turned out, as did two TV stations and reporters from a local newspaper.

Saturday, sheriff deputies interviewed Hart, who told them someone by the name of "Kevin Riley" acted as a middle man in the recruiting process. A sheriff's report said Hart told a deputy that "Riley" told him there were scholarship offers available. Hart also told deputies he thought "Riley" was from Las Vegas.

Tuesday, Lyon County sheriff's detectives said they were investigating Hart's claim that he paid "Riley" to help him get a scholarship. "We do have a report of some sort of a recruiting deal with Kevin Hart," sheriff department Lt. Rob Hall said then. "There's a lot of facts that we're trying to run down to corroborate what he's telling us."

Then Wednesday morning, Hall said Hart had been "unable to provide any phone numbers, addresses" or other contact information for "Riley." Hart came clean later in the day.

Both of my parents were public school teachers so it was VERY important to them that I go to public school and do well. I had excellent teachers at Heeia El, King Int, and then Castle High. Mr. Mizuta and Mr. Moritsugu were awesome Math teachers...better than many I had in college.

When I became a National Merit Scholar, I was told that I was the first ever from Castle. I think my parents were especially proud because I went to a public school and showed that the system worked.

Unfortunately almost all of my teachers retired or got out of teaching before Lori went to Castle. She was Valedictorian but was not prepared for college because the teaching just wasn't there. The Electronics class just played cards all year!

Here is another sad tale regarding high school athletics. Maybe UH could get this top 30 guard...it sounds like the Aloha and Ohana at UH would be good for her.

First, there was an anonymous letter laced with expletives and ethnic slurs placed in her suitcase during a basketball trip to the Bay Area.

That was three years ago, when Gizelle Studevent was an eighth-grader at La Jolla Country Day School.

Then came the crank phone calls and more hateful notes, again unsigned, dripping with athletic jealousy and taped to her locker on campus or sent through the mail to her family's home.

But even that paled in comparison to por nographic images online last year that were falsely connected to Studevent's name.

“That was tough,” Studevent said.

La Jolla Country Day administrators became involved, local police were called. The online images soon disappeared.

Studevent's family, though, believed it would be in Gizelle's best interest to change schools.

In a few short months, she has found a fit on the court as part of the region's fifth-ranked team. Studevent beams when she talks about finishing the first semester at her new school with a 3.86 grade-point average.

In a game played last month at Bishop's, students from La Jolla Country Day jeered Studevent whenever she touched the ball. Clearly bothered by the reaction, Studevent was held scoreless in the second half of the 51-47 loss.

Before Friday's second meeting, Hutzler said LJCD students were addressed on proper fan behavior. The crowd didn't jeer every time Studevent touched the ball, but there were disrespectful signs in the stands, at least one of which was confiscated. The game ended in a 69-67 victory for the Torreys.

Studevent has overcome challenges before and is determined to do so again.

“You have to overcome it,” said Studevent, who survived a near-fatal accident when her father's car was hit by a drunk driver when she was 10. “I have no choice but to become stronger. I'm happy now.”

Studevent's situation is a reminder that, although sometimes perceived as a problem for kids on the outside of the “in” crowd, no student is immune to harassment.

Especially troubling was the online bullying, which is becoming more common, according to one Internet safety advocate.

Coach Marlon Wells sees progress in Studevent, who's ranked among the nation's top 30 guards for the class of 2009 by some recruiting services. Studevent, who's averaging 19 points, has drawn interest from a number of top Division I programs.

I just read a report about SMU's signing event and found 3 things interesting.

For each recruit, JJ credited the coach that recruited the player. Did he do that at UH? I thought that Reinbold got credit for players that others recruited at UH.

ST reported that UH doesn't have a secretary dedicated to the football team. JJ has his own personal office assistant at SMU (Terry). At least the UH football team is getting a secretary soon.

SMU is greyshirting 2 players. That means the parents of 2 players have a lot of spare money!

A football player from North Carolina is taking the University of Hawaii to court.

Daniel Smith is a cornerback for Providence Senior High School.

He accepted a verbal offer for a scholarship to play with the Warriors, but the offer was rescinded when coaches June Jones and Jeff Reinbold left for Southern Methodist University.

Smith's complaint said he turned down other offers at other schools to attend UH. The lawsuit said he no longer can get a scholarship for his first year.

Looks like JJ will be focusing more on the Dallas area for his recruiting next year. They got 18 recruits from Texas today, so hopefully they will increase that next year and cut out Hawaii/California recruiting.

The Phoenix Suns completed a blockbuster trade today with the Miami Heat for center Shaquille O'Neal in a deal that brings the aging center back to the Western Conference.

O'Neal is scoring a career-low 14.2 points and has been limited to 32 games because of an assortment of injuries, but once he passed his physical today, the deal was completed.

The Suns sent disgruntled forward Shawn Marion and backup point guard Marcus Banks to Miami.

Garret, you think the story on Daniel Smith is worth the coverage? I never saw his name on UH recruit list prior to JJ leaving. If UH did offer through JJ, the story should read how JJ's staff left Daniel smith, not UH leaving Daniel Smith. Why should we be the bad guy? All that can be said to Daniel Smith is "Sorry, but the committment to you was made through Coach Jones and his staff. They should have contacted you earlier to let you know of this situation."

whitey,

I know that JJ took a lot of criticism when he took back an offer from a recruit after he got to SMU...even though the player was informed in writing 2 months before JJ was hired that the new coaches would not necessarily stick with the earlier offers.

So, I guess because the player commits to a school instead of a coach, that the school is the one in question. However, this lawsuit has NO merit and it will not go anywhere...except give some bad publicity for UH. But coming after NLI day, it will be forgotten well before recruiting picks up again.

Players take back their verbal commits all of the time. Should schools sue them? The lawsuit is silly to me and will not affect UH.

Change of subject, Leahy & Leahy just over. Young one wearing a bright red (valentine?) shirt while Papa's shirt matches the table cloth.
And they discussed all of the above about recruiting & coach Mac & stuff.

Then Mayor Mufi knocked on the door and the discussion was mostly on keeping the Pro Bowl. The mayor said it will stay two more years but then we might have to share it with other destinations (implying maybe foreign cities want it). But then both he and Papa shifted the burden to the State to step up and try to keep it. But, like the Olympics, I think it is a "city" push, no?

And the mayor mentioned that the NFL is considering giving BOTH the super bowl and pro bowl to one city. And that it would "rotate" which would be alright with him---if the NFL scheduled a game or two here instead.

He also brought along some hot malasadas to the table...

Re your 20:13 post. We sell malassadas as a fund-raiser for the non-profit I work for and that is the spelling that our wholesaler uses - how much portogee can you get than Agnes Portuguese Bake Shop?

Did you ever think to ask the Stadium vendors who their supplier is? If it's Agnes, then that's why the spelling.

Besides, what is inappropriate about the spelling?

Have a meet-up scheduled with folks in the Athletic Department about raising money and doing volunteer work. Will report on it afterwards.

Garret: Would you like me to check with the public testimony folder to make sure that your letter arrived? I sat through Chang's reading of the testimony which arrived, but after awhile everything sort of blurred together. I recognized several names, but I don't recall hearing yours, but that is no indication that it wasn't

I wonder if the hearing were aired on `Olelo? If so, I can see if a copy of the hearing could be made available so that I can make copies for those of you who would like to have one.

I had to leave before decision-making to get to other hearings. Yesterday was awful - 11 hearings at the Capitol and City Hall, 27 bills and 2 resolutions and I still haven't gotten caught up on today's 11 hearings and 17 bills. All but three bills are job-related and I'm the only one who does this sort of thing.

RE Tomorrow night's Pink Women's Basketball Game to support breast cancer research. Two of our regulars here have wives who are doing battle with breast cancer. If you cannot bring yourself to wear pink in their honor, how about writing a check on their behalf. I assume that volunteers will be collecting donations tomorrow evening.

Laterz - have to go to the laundromat tonight. We have a washer but no dryer so when the weather is junk for several days running, that's what we gotta do.

NINE MORE DAYS UNTIL BASEBALL SEASON STARTS AT UH!! Unlike Kazz, I watch it anytime anywhere. My dream vacation would be a baseball bus tour.

Congratulations to UH for their great recruiting class. Look forward to seeing some of the new ones at Spring ball, but more important is to see how the new program under Coach Mc will progress this spring and carry over into the summer. Will wait to see what blooms this spring, roses or tulips.

I'll see you at the game tomorrow night. I'm trying to see if I can find a pink shirt. I don't have one, maybe my mom might. Or I'll go to Goodwill and buy one.

oh, i have this feeling that maybe chase will get either a walk-on opportunity or grayshirt.

i think a lot hinges on his recovery process. we could always use a local boy receiver in the ranks. just to bring toughness to the receiving corps.

you know how they do, ornellas, welch, stutzmann, owens, rivers. we got bain who is as tough as they come.

Re: prospect Daniel Mary Smith, as someone around here pointed out, an offer can't be accepted until Feb 6, and until an offer is accepted it can be retracted, and UH retracted before any offer was accepted, so UH had the right to retract as it did, in a timely fashion, and Mary is SOL.

Had Mary been been a smart little girl, she would have gotten back-up offers.

UH played by the rules. Mary's gripe is with the NCAA.

Mary's suit gets throw out and poor Mary is assessed attorney's fees.

Mary can't prove damages because any other offer he supposedly could have walked away from also could have been retracted.

It's unfortunate, but a law suit? Give me a break Mary.

The NY Times was able to have complete access to Scott as he decided between Colorado and Texas. This was a HUGE win for Hawkins...a player he can build his whole team around.

Texas never seems to get the recruits it goes for who decide on NLI day.

He also said his uncle, the rising sophomore wide receiver Josh Smith, played for the Buffaloes. This caused Scott’s mother to raise her eyebrows.

“I know, but it’s a big thing,” Scott said. “I mean, family comes first.”

They shared a concern about Colorado’s weather, but Scott assured his mother that the Buffaloes had an indoor practice facility. He cited the rush-oriented offense and the depth chart, which appears to give him a chance to play as a freshman.

After 15 minutes, Scott declared that Texas and Colorado were his finalists. He revisited his concern about Applewhite’s experience with running backs and said he did not want to attend a university where he did not know the position coach.

Later Monday night, Scott received a text message from Southern California quarterback Mark Sanchez saying, “Hey, give me a call A.S.A.P.” Scott did not respond.

On Tuesday, Kennedy called Scott, but he did not answer. Scott did, however, return a telephone call from Texas tight end Blaine Irby, a former teammate at St. Bonaventure.

Rumors circulated Wednesday morning that Scott had picked Colorado because his mother was accepting a bank job there. Alexis Scott, who manages an obstetrics and gynecology practice, said: “That’s crazy. I’ve never even worked at a bank.”

Scott said he doubted his mother would move to Colorado.

Less than an hour before his announcement, he received another text message, from Texas quarterback Colt McCoy. It said: “Call or text me, man. It’s Colt.”

It was further proof that recruiting does not end until a player picks a cap.

This stuff was, flat, I've seen lup cheong, maybe that's what it was, smoked and flattened - this is how flat it is, I had it in plastic wrap and was going crazy looking for it when I took the rice pot out of the fridge to make fried rice, 20 min. later, this stuff was stuck to the outside bottom of the rice pot. But it was really good.

Interesting tidbits about Texas recruiting.

The Longhorns had 20 recruits sign today...19 of them were committed by the end of July of 2007!

Texas signed just 1 player from out of state this year, just 6 total in 6 years! The only player Texas signed from out of state was the son of a former Texas coach who has "wanted to come to Texas for 10 years."

Texas looked hard at four, maybe five players outside its borders and signed just one. Of course, that's its track record because Brewster raises the total of out-of-staters who have signed with the Longhorns to a paltry six in six years and 22 in 11 classes.

Twelve of the Gators' 22 recruits hail from outside Florida. Urban Meyer plucked the nation's top-ranked safety out of New Jersey and the second-best one out of Alabama. USC grabbed a wide receiver this year from Georgia whose father played at Florida State, signed a defensive end out of Detroit, a cornerback from Tallahassee, a linebacker from Alabama, and so on and so on.

Here's the rub:

Mack says he can win another national title with nothing but Texans because he basically has. It says here he might be in position to win even more if he looked outward just a bit.

If anything, he's becoming even more Texas-centric. Six of his 20 signees are from Central Texas. Let's just hope Mack doesn't decide to just recruit those who live in his neighborhood.

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/colleges/recruiting/stories/020708dnspo2009lede.2e01ee8.html

Here is a profile of a top OL recruit (6'5", 290-pounds) for 2009 from Texas. Note that he plans to commit to a school over the summer, like most of the top players in Texas.

If Mack wants to get recruits out of Texas he either needs to start really early or hope that some players fall through the cracks. Note that most Texas schools actually finish their recruiting classes over the summer...so if a player works really hard over the summer and has a good senior year, he may be an excellent recruit without an in-state scholarship offer.

Schools he's considering: Oklahoma, Texas, Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor, Kansas State, Notre Dame, Southern California. He plans to commit this summer.

Did you know? Football is his only non-honors class.

Mack Brown had an interesting answer when he was asked what he does when he runs into another school committing a recruiting violation.

"You're always going to have violations by schools, and that's in every profession not just ours, because some coaches are going to cheat. That's the way they've made their living. You're always going to have some families that buy into that and you're always going to have a certain level of families that look you right in the face and lie to you, and our job is to make sure that we do not recruit a young guy that would be bought, not recruit a family that would be bought and not talk to a family that you think may lie to you. And about 98 percent of the time that works for you, but you're always going to have people in every profession that are going to break rules. And I've talked to Joe Paterno about it because it really used to frustrate me a few years ago. So I said, "Joe, what do you do with guys that are being bought?" And he said, "Stay away from them." I said, "Do you turn them in?" And he said, "Nah, it doesn't do any good. Just stay away from them." So we try to recruit guys that want to come to Texas, and if they don't want to come, very honestly that's okay. And if they don't want to come and you try to force them into coming by over-recruiting them, it usually doesn't work anyway. We like the ones we get. I think it's bad every year. More tough decisions are made near the end of signing day, and that's why I wish we had an early signing period, because more coaches panic and more families panic when the pressure gets on."
