Kirk Alexander retires

Safety Kirk Alexander has retired from football because of personal reasons, coach Greg McMackin confirmed.
As a member of one of the great UCLA football families, it was hoped Alexander would have a prosperous career at UH. And while he showed promise, he never managed to ascend high on the depth chart.

* * *
Alexander, who was No. 21 last season, used to wear No. 14, the jersey number worn by Tim Chang.
Plans to retire Chang's No. 14 never materialized.
But equipment specialist Al Ginoza said he has not assigned Colt Brennan's No. 15.

* * *

The proccess is under way for Cabaret to move to Hawai‘i.
Cabaret is McMackin's grand-daughter's horse.
Cabaret, who lives in Texas, is undergoing the series of shots needed for the move.
McMackin is paying — out of his own pocket — to move Cabaret and McMackin's small boat to Hawai‘i.
The purchase of McMackin's new house in Hawai‘i should close next month.
His wife is in Lubbock trying to sell their house there.

* * *

Ikaika Malloe, the defensive line coach/special teams coordinator, is in El Paso trying to sell his house there. He will return to Hawai‘i this weekend.

Is Alexander's "retirement" due to his lack of progress on the depth chart? Especially with all the incoming DBs in this year's recruiting class, he feel moving up was not viable?

Georgia coach Mark Richt's son (a talented QB) signed with Clemson.

- Covered from head to toe in orange, Prince Avenue Christian's Jon Richt looked like any Georgia fan's worst nightmare.

But father Mark Richt, Georgia's football coach, smiled and applauded as his son made his post-high school plans official in front of the Wolverines student body in a color he has learned to loathe.

Wearing an orange hat, orange shirt, orange jacket and orange pants, Jon Richt signed a letter of intent Wednesday to accept a scholarship to play football at Clemson.

"It's a great day," the quarterback said. "It's been in my heart that God, this is where he wanted me to go. ... It's going to be very different, but I believe I'll make it through."

Jon Richt plans to start practice at Clemson on May 21. For his family, that means close to four more months of watching the oldest son strutting around in the same color as Florida, Auburn and Tennessee.

"He gets away with it," his mother, Katharyn Richt, said. "He's been doing it for awhile. Orange is kind of hard for us, but we love Jon. ... To be able to watch part of his dream come true is a blessing."

Putting pen to paper was merely a formality for the Wolverines' quarterback. Jon Richt committed to Clemson on Feb. 1, 2007 and said he never waivered on that commitment.

Both father and son smiled at the thought of the two playing in a game on opposite sides of the field one day. Jon Richt seemed the most excited about the possibility.

"We are very competitive," he said. "He (his dad) is always saying 'Man beats boy.' We are going to change that around one time."

Both agreed that if that day did come, Jon Richt's mother might be wearing as much orange as her eldest son.

"There is no way his mom will be the water boy for Georgia," Mark Richt said. "Our defensive ends would be afraid to drink the water."

Jon Richt didn't put anything past his protective mother either.

"She'd probably spike the water," he said. "I'm not going to lie."

Interesting analysis of each conference and their football scheduling.

Curiosity finally got the best of us. Although all I-A conferences and Independents schedule I-AA teams, what is the league-by-league breakdown? We couldn't hit the send button fast enough on an email to Marty at cfbstats.com, the ultimate site for college football stats junkies. As usual, he came through, and each of the charts displayed on this post cover data from the 2004-2007 seasons.

The chart at the top is a percentage breakdown of games played by I-A conferences vs. I-AA opponents. As you can see, the Western Athletic Conference is the king of the hill when it comes to playing I-AA teams. As always, click a chart for an expanded view.

UConn scheduled a 10-game series vs. Notre Dame. In order to get Notre Dame on its schedule, UConn had to agree that NONE of the 10 games will be played at their home stadium!

My first reaction is, c'mon, this cannot be right.

There was an internal memo leaked in South Bend in recent days that details an upcoming 10-game football series between Notre Dame and UConn with no games at Rentschler Field.

Zero?

Five games are planned for South Bend, Ind., and five games are to be split between Foxborough, Mass., and East Rutherford, N.J. And that part seems non-negotiable. It sure sounds like it was "take it or leave it," and UConn is in the process of taking it.

Double-digit games between Notre Dame and the state university of Connecticut between 2009 and 2020, and not one game on state soil? Not one game in a stadium paid for by state taxpayers with the intent of building a major college football program? Wow.

Three years ago, Notre Dame said it would play three Big East teams each year starting in 2011. The scheduling proceeds slowly. As long as there are no repeat 3-9 seasons, Notre Dame football does what it wants because Notre Dame football can. And you know what? If the folks at Notre Dame want to make their own rules, if they want to count the gold at the end of the NBC-BCS rainbow, if they want to be their own monopoly, well, that's fine. It's just a little sad to watch them bleed every cent, every scintilla of pride, from conference brethren.

Concern about limited revenue from a 40,000-seat stadium is understandable. Playing a few "neutral-site" games is cool. But the way this long-term series is constructed, with all UConn "home" games played in other states, it's not done in the spirit of a state institution for the enjoyment of that state. Notre Dame is dictating to Hathaway where his home games will be, telling Connecticut, hey, you're not big enough for us, so you have to go to another state to accommodate our fans. And think about this: The state university will play in a stadium run by a man who brought his NFL franchise to Connecticut only to humiliate the state and take it back to Foxborough. To use the Patriots' credo, there's a lot of humble pie being served.

Alabama has to do some scholarship shuffling now that they landed such a big recruiting class.

The Alabama coach announced a signing class of 32 players on Wednesday, which exceeds both the annual signing limit of 25 and the overall scholarship limit of 85.

He has until the players report in August to bring his signing class within limits, but Saban believes people are spending too much time worrying about the numbers.

"First of all, we have a plan for how we're going to manage our numbers," he said. "I think there were 14 or 15 teams that signed over 30 guys and there are various ways" to make the numbers work.

Actually, according to Rivals.com, only eight teams signed 30 or more players -- Alabama (32), Miami (33), Florida State (30), Minnesota (30), Virginia Tech (31), Mississippi (32), Kansas State (33) and Army (34).

In the Southeastern Conference, only five schools signed over their annual limit of 25: Alabama, Auburn (28), Mississippi, Mississippi State (27) and LSU (26).

"I'm not going to expound on this, but some guys grayshirt, some guys have academic issues that you might have to place (in junior college or prep school)," Saban said. "We have a way to manage the future of that."

Last year, when asked about grayshirting a player, Saban denied any previous knowledge of the word. NCAA Bylaw 15.5.5.3.9 allows "delayed initial counters," when a player's eligibility starts, "until the following academic year."

Once Saban gets his class to 25, he has to figure out a way to get the current group of returning scholarship players down to 60. Last year, he offered academic scholarships to four players with recurring medical issues, including receiver Tyrone Prothro.

Several players qualify for that status this year, including junior receiver Will Oakley, who has batted recurring hamstring injuries; outside linebacker Zeke Knight, who has experienced recurring dizzy spells through heart-related problems; guard B.J. Stabler, whose three knee surgeries have not cured him of problems that prevent him from sitting out practice because of the knee; and defensive back Chris Lett, whose case of juvenile diabetes has prevented him from practicing, much less playing with the team.

Even if he lost those players, there could be as many as six more scholarship players that would need to leave the team before the incoming class reports in August.

I think that coach Lumpkin's interview was an example of getting around this rule.

A version of the minority-interviewing rule that was the catalyst for the NFL to diversify its head coaching ranks has been adopted by major college football.

A written policy stipulating that any division I-A football program with a head coaching vacancy will interview at least one minority candidate was sent just more than three weeks ago to athletic directors at the 120 schools. The two-page document details what it calls "acceptable standards" regarding diversity in interviewing and hiring practices, and was distributed by the Division I-A Athletic Directors' Association.

Officials said the components of the policy previously had been ratified by schools with membership in the athletic directors' association and were informally in place for the hiring cycle that followed the recently completed season.

"It's already had a very significant impact," said Dutch Baughman, executive director of the Division I-A Athletic Directors' Association. "We wanted to improve the number of legitimate, in-person interviews [involving minority candidates] that took place. We weren't so much focused on the number of hirings. That will come in time."
Permalink 02/12/08 @ 08:52
Baughman said he saw a marked improvement in the number of interviews conducted with minority candidates during the just-completed hiring cycle and hopes more gains will be made with the policy now in writing.

"Of the 17 or 18 searches we just had, most involved one or more interviews" with minority candidates, Baughman said.

Despite the rough weather, BSU's stadium construction is on schedule. UH will play in the new stadium this season.

Members of the Boise State athletic department meet every Thursday with the construction team that is expanding Bronco Stadium.

The first question every week is the same.

"How are we doing on time?"

So far - one year after the groundbreaking and five and a half months before the scheduled completion date - the press box/luxury suites/club seats/ loge boxes/concourse/ticket office/novelty store addition to Bronco Stadium is changing the Boise skyline on schedule.

The facility should be a stunner.

The top floor holds the press box, some luxury suites and a banquet area. The next floor is all luxury suites and a banquet area that overhangs the large Double R Ranch Club below - the facility's signature room.

The next floor is club seats and the Double R Ranch Club. And the bottom floor holds the open-air but covered loge boxes and a club room that will have fireplaces among its amenities.

Underneath the structure, the new west concourse will enhance the experience for fans who sit on that side of the stadium. It includes five concession stands, a novelty store and about 135 toilets, more than triple the previous total.

And the ground floor will feature a new ticket office and permanent Bronco Shop. Less noticeable will be the kitchen that services the premium seating areas and the TV truck bays that will allow for easy hookups for broadcast equipment.

I can't believe that the stuff with Washington is still going through the courts!

The state appeals court breathed new life Monday into a lawsuit that accused the University of Washington of minimizing an allegation of rape against a Husky football player and treating his accuser with "deliberate indifference."

In a 42-page opinion, a three-judge appeals panel cited "ample evidence" to argue before a jury that the UW tried to keep quiet the 2001 allegation against former Huskies player Roc Alexander by discouraging the accuser from filing a police report, opting instead for a face-to-face mediation session between her and Alexander.

The appellate opinion did not rule on the facts but found that the lawsuit -- filed by a former UW student -- was improperly dismissed in 2005 by King County Superior Court Judge Bruce Hilyer. The ruling sends the case back for trial.

Alexander was a freshman on the UW's Rose Bowl-winning 2000 team. That squad was recently profiled in a Seattle Times series that examined how the UW, the courts and other community institutions responded to allegations of criminal conduct by some players.

The plaintiff sued Alexander and the UW in 2004. Alexander settled for an undisclosed sum. A second woman, also a UW student, likewise sued Alexander, accusing him of rape. Alexander settled that lawsuit as well.

In the summer of 2001, the woman told an assistant football coach that she had been sexually assaulted. She was referred to Marie Tuite, a senior associate athletic director. The plaintiff told Tuite she'd been "violated" and wanted to file a police report, according to the court ruling.

Tuite, the plaintiff alleged, suggested that she stop working with the football team. If the plaintiff continued working with the team, and word of the alleged assault spread, "it would reflect poorly" on the UW, Tuite told her, the plaintiff said.

Tuite also asked the woman to hold off contacting police, according to the plaintiff's account cited in the court ruling.

At the suggestion of the athletic department, the UW's student ombudsman mediated the matter between the plaintiff and Alexander in October 2001. Although the UW has a program for sexual-assault victims, the plaintiff was not referred there for help, according to the court ruling.

At the three-hour mediation, the woman asked that Alexander be suspended from the football program but said Tuite denied the request, saying the media "would ask why he was not playing," according to the court ruling.

As a result of the mediation, Alexander was ordered to do community service and attend counseling.

The plaintiff felt the mediation was "totally biased" against her, she said in the Monday interview with The Times. "I think that's the thing that has stuck with me -- how [the mediation] was run and the lack of outcome."

Alexander joined the NFL in 2004, and is currently with the Houston Texans.

The Big 10 Network is making money but still is not available on many cable systems in the Big 10 area. I get it in High-Def but do not watch it.

For fans of the Hoosiers, the situation is no different than when the network launched last August, with numerous fans being unable to watch the game on cable television. At least one IU trustee is losing patience.
"I'm very frustrated that this deal has not been done," trustee Phil Eskew said. "We can't keep going on like this."
Eskew said he's also concerned that a year and a half after the contract between the Big Ten Conference and Fox was announced, not enough people know the details. He said he believes nobody at IU has read it other than Adam Herbert, IU's president in 2006. Eskew wonders if IU could get out of the deal if the cable issue isn't resolved.
Neil Theobald, IU's vice president and chief financial officer, and a Fox spokesman confirmed the Big Ten Network contract runs 20 years, with the money guaranteed to each member school throughout. That includes $6.12 million this academic year. IU officials say they have received two payments of $1.53 million each, with the remainder coming in March and June.

In order to increase season ticket sales, Pitt is *reducing* season ticket prices.

"Our goal is to sell out Heinz Field for the entire season. We know we can do it and we've done it before."

Pederson recalled the 2003 season when he and former associate athletic director Jim Earle came up with a ticket pricing plan that enabled the Panthers to sell out all of their season tickets. The team averaged 59,197 fans that year and had more than 60,000 for four of the six home games. Pitt sold a little less than 30,000 season tickets last season but is hoping to increase that number to 50,000, which would be a sellout (not including student tickets and tickets reserved for visiting teams).

Reduced prices: Season tickets, which go on sale today, are less expensive. Student tickets are $25 (down from $49); Upper end zone seats are $72 (down from $99); Lower level end zone seats and some seats in the upper deck are $99 (down from $199); The lower level sideline and upper level sidelines between the 20-yard lines are $144 (down from $199); and Club seats are $270. The club seats and some of the sideline seats will again require a donation to the Panther Club.

"If you look, 33 percent of our season tickets cost less than $100," Pitt ticket manager Reed Patterson said. "That's a tremendous value."

• Parking: For the first time since the Panthers moved to Heinz Field, every season ticket holder will have the opportunity to buy a season parking pass for $60, which breaks down to $10 per game.

"We're selling the spaces at the same cost we pay for them," Pederson said. "But we needed to make sure that if you buy season tickets you can buy a parking pass."

In addition to lowering ticket prices, Pitt scheduled better teams for their home games.

A better home schedule: For the first time since 2003, Pitt is not playing a Division I-AA team. The Panthers home schedule is Bowling Green, Buffalo, Iowa, Louisville, Rutgers and West Virginia. That should be a more attractive than last season, which was highlighted by South Florida. Pitt also will enter the season with much higher expectations than the past two seasons, which should generate more excitement as well.

Story about how Terry Bowden and Bobby Bowden fought over recruits.

Per NCAA rules, the head coach is allowed only one official home visit. I strategically looked at the calendar for the best chance for me to go into his home and hopefully close the deal. I decided to have my home visit from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday night. He had a basketball game Friday night, which would keep him busy, and he had no more official school visits left for the final weekend. I made up my mind that Thursday night was do-or-die time with this recruit.

I booked the flight to Fort Lauderdale and rented a nice Lincoln Town Car in order to impress him when I drove up. As I met him and his mother on the front porch, I immediately hugged his mom and told her how much I loved her and turned to Martavius and said, "Son, you're going to win a Heisman Trophy at Auburn University."

As I turned to leave, a long black, stretch limousine pulled up in front of the house. A little, short driver with one of those driver's caps and half-jackets on got out, walked all the way around the back of the limousine and opened the back door next to the curb.

Out stepped my ol' man.

He had scheduled his official visit for 7:30 p.m. on the same night.

As he waddled up that sidewalk wearing that silly-looking safari hat and those red/yellow/green sunglasses that he always wears, my eyes got as big as saucers and my jaw dropped.

My ol' man stepped up on the porch, said hello to that mama, shook Martavius' hand, turned to me, patted me on the head (in front of both of them) and said, "Terry, when you get home, your mama wants you to call her."

That's all he said!

You talk about dirty recruiting – it doesn't get any dirtier. Nobody has ever been "who's your daddy-ed" worse than that.

I mean, who do you want to play for – BOBBY – or terry?

ries/2008/02/11/republican_lawmakers_to_florid.html

On Monday, GOP lawmakers announced a united House-Senate effort to — let’s say it — blackmail the state of Florida into permitting vanity car tags that honor University of Georgia alumni.

Otherwise, lawmakers said, they’ll yank the Gator tags just won by an Atlanta group of University of Florida grads from the state Department of Revenue.

House Minority Whip Barry Fleming (R-Harlem), who just happens to be running for Congress and requires support from Athens, is pitching the bill.

Johnson said the bill would also apply to other states — including Alabama. For a small extra fee, Auburn University alums can buy a prestige plate in Georgia — but Bulldogs can’t buy a Georgia alumni plate in Alabama.

Very interesting article about the massive fundraising going on at other Universities. I do not think anything close to this has happened at UH. UC-San Diego's previous fundraising campaign record was $25 mil and they just completed a $1 BILLION campaign? Wow.

These days, universities that want top-notch faculty, first-rate buildings and enviable football fields don't rely solely on tuition or state support. They fundraise.

In fact, it's hard to find a university that hasn't just initiated, wrapped up or isn't in a record-setting fundraising campaign.

“Since 1997, we've raised twice as much money as we did in the prior 100 years,” San Diego State University President Stephen Weber said.

In June, UC San Diego became the 34th campus in the nation to complete a campaign of $1 billion or more, shattering the university's previous record of $25 million in 1985.

University of California San Diego Chancellor Marye Anne Fox said only 12 percent of UCSD's budget comes from state funding. That compares with 20.5 percent in 1992.

Fox said fundraising consultants told the university that it might be too ambitious to raise the $1 billion needed for faculty research, student scholarships, new buildings and more.

The school had little choice.

“Our only options were to raise private funds or accept a decrease in quality,” she said.

“If you're in a billion-dollar campaign, or in the case of Stanford, $4.3 billion, you're in the business of having to raise something in excess of $1 million a day,” Lippincott said.

The need for more dollars has led to a bigger investment in fundraising staffs.

SDSU more than doubled the size of its core staff to 28 over the past decade and established a philanthropic foundation that helps secure and manage gifts.

UCSD nearly tripled the size of its development department, which includes fundraising professionals, to 129 over 10 years, and simultaneously increased the amount of annual gifts from $58.1 million to $129.6 million.

Kekoa,

My Grandmother (Dad's Mom) suffered a stroke when she was 90 years old...she was told she would never walk again. After running a farm while raising 19 kids, she ignored the doctors and went through full rehab--lifting weights, etc. She walked with a walker within a year, then was able to just use a cane and even walk without any aid for short distances.

She was a far tougher person than me. That is why I named my 2nd daughter after her.

Could UH use a director of high school relations to help with the interactions between UH and the local schools? That would lesson some of the load that the coaches have.

Funny how Fresno State's LB coach is now JJ's defensive coordinator while UTEP's defensive coordinator is now JJ's LB coach.

June Jones has taken his time in filling out his coaching staff, but we should get an official announcement of just about everybody later today.

Tom Mason, of Fresno State, will be the defensive coordinator. Here's Mason's bio.

Locally, Tam Hollingshead, of Rockwall-Heath, will become the director of high school relations.

Even with the improvements isn't the BSU stadium capacity still about 35-38 thousand, Isn't the same true for Fresno. With Aloha stadium at about 50,000 are'nt we the largest stadium in the WAC. Also home attendance... is Hawaii no. 1 in the WAC

many, many posts ago, I asked why UH could not give "academic" scholarships to some incoming recruits who qualify for such to "maximize" the number available each year.

I wonder what the difference(s) would be between academic and athletic? ie, can academic student playing football also eat at the training table, etc.

How combersome would it be to handle this type of arrangement?

hilogreg,

I think that you are correct, UH has the biggest stadium and highest attendance numbers in the WAC. However, with the luxury boxes and other things in Boise State's new stadium, their stadium will bring in more money than Aloha Stadium will. And they get to keep their money, while the Aloha Stadium authority keeps a bunch from UH games.

A-House,

I didn't know that it was possible to give out "Academic" scholarships for football players. However, I just read (and posted) the article today about out some football players who have injuries in the past can be given Academic scholarships to free up Athletic scholarships for more recruits.

Apparently Nick Saban and Alabama figured out a way to move football players to Academic scholarships while they remain on the football team. This includes players with injuries that make them sit out some practices but still let them play in games...weren't there a number of Warrior players who had to sit out practices last season but could still play in games?

There is no mention in the article that the players did well academically and had earned academic scholarships. It just says that some players who had recurring injuries could be given academic scholarships. Weird.

So, your suggestion of having some of the high-performing students on the football team get academic scholarhips would appear to be possible in some cases. I don't know the loophole in the NCAA regulations that Alabama is using, but I'm sure that a compliance guy could find it. Those rules would determine the other issues such as training table, etc.

Schoenhoft, a 6-foot 6-inch, 245-pound quarterback, will have two years of eligibility at Delaware.

A native of Mason, Ohio, Schoenhoft was ranked as the No. 17 quarterback in the 2005 recruiting class out of St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati. He was rated ahead of 2007 Heisman Trophy finalists Colt Brennan of the University of Hawaii and Chase Daniel of the University of Missouri.

Food for thought.

Now I have been "loosly" watching Rainbow Wahine Basketball for the past two seasons, BUT I actually have followed this season squad MUCH closer than I have before.

One thing gets to me. Jim Bolla.

Now I will admit that I am NOT familiar with his resume, but I just do NOT see the "motivator" that a head coach should be.

From what I see on television and in person I see a distant figure with no connection to his team.

This year's team is talented!!! Kotani, Cariaga, Smith, Hittle, Kanekoa, etc...

Yes they have made mental errors in games and if anyone saw the past home game against Nevada you know what I mean.

What upset me was his comments after the game with Kevin Hashiro and how he just lost his composure on air.

I just do not see a person that has a connection with his team at all.

Pat Charity is due for a promotion in my opinion.

Again this is just my opinion from what I have seen this past season. I am not knocking Jim Bolla as a person, but I am just not happy with his demeanor during games and I don't think it's a superficial thing for me. I think his "disconnect" is obviously effecting a team that could easily be above .500 right now.

Anyone with MORE familiarity with Wahine Basketball please feel free to correct me on anything you feel is incorrect because if I it seems I made some quick judgements then I will be more than happy to apologize.

We are passionate here about our football Warriors, but overall we are UH fans and I think that when it comes to the leadership of our student athletes we all want to see the best for them.

Gigi,

I'm not sure how many games Pat Charity took over while Jim Bolla was out, but I do know that it was like the team got their "second wind" when she was at the helm.

The Wahine did well under Charity for those games.

Homey,

Good, I knew I wasn't crazy.

It's frustrating for me because I know that this year's Wahine team is darn good, but... (sighs)...

What really ticked me off this season was when I was sitting behind the Wahine bench and Bolla calls a time out after they fell behind pretty significantly and it's still the first half.

Now the team gathers around him and he doesn't have anything to say. He just crosses his arms and stares at the ground shaking his head, mutters something and walks away with his back to the team.

That p***ed me off to no extreme. I was disgusted with that. Plus every reaction there afterwards from him no where near the kind of expression of motivation or coaching anyone at the D1 level should expect.

If there was a Jim Bolla mascot, it would just be a gray stick figure with a frowning face.

Has he always been like this?

Does anyone know if he's different with the team behind the scenes? A better teacher/motivator perhaps?

Kazz, I agree with your assessment and have had these thoughts from the time Vince Goo left. Vince was a great tactician, strategist and above all a great motivato; everything that Bolla is not.

Bolla is the "Fumbler's" significant hire, need more be said? Here is more, why did Bolla leave UNLV?

It's interesting that in the Nevada game, Bolla really worked the refs (and his players) in the first half, and the team's effort was great. He was less animated in the second half, at least until Galdones' last turnover.

My favorite moment of that game was when Leilani lost the ball just before the half, which lead to a basket for Nevada. Bolla yelled at her to concentrate and she looked like she was going to cry. Instead, she batted the ball out of the Nevada guard's hands and raced in for a layup.

Sorry, too fast a trigger finger: "motivator".

Addition: Vince Goo got results with less talent, graduated close to 100% of his players and adjusted playing style to what he had on the court, which many times were "height challenged".

How did the asst coaches react when Bolla walked away w/o saying a word? Did they step in or were the girls left to talk things over by themselves?

I wonder how many years are left on Bolla's contract. If he continues to "coach" in this manner, I hope not too many.

I was at the wahine game saturday too. It was frustrating to watch the team be up by 11 and then lose it by whatever they did. I'm not a coach, and don't know how to coach, but he could've made an effort to stop the bleeding with a time out. Instead he waited until we lost the lead to take a time out. He shows not much emotion at all. I don't understand the zone he uses. Our posts are too slow to cover the wings, often leaving their guards open for 3. Luckily they haven't hit them too consistantly, however when we do, we're in trouble. He doesn't mix up the defense either, and we always stay in the zone. Sure we might be a little shorthanded for players too. We have 2 centers, and why do we use them at the same time? There's only so many hi-lows we can throw.

It has been a rough year to watch Wahine basketball. It has been good to see Tara Hittle throw some excitement into it all though.

Mike,

You're right too. He really worked the refs in the first half. They deserved it too. They always do. I love Galdones' effort, but she's only so mobile with one good knee. She couldn't keep up with that Nevada guard who had the green light to shoot it from halfcourt if she wanted.

Not sure if Bolla took a chill pill at the half, but it was like a complete different person. Back to his normal complacent self.

The turnovers are killing them. I'm not sure why they are having so many...have to admit that I haven't watched too many of their games. Liked what I saw from Tara Hittle...she always brings passion and athleticism to her game, whether it be basketball or volleyball.

SteveM, good luck on the sleep test. I had two tests taken within the last 6 months! It's good to exercise or do something that makes you tired hours before you go in for the test. The electrodes on the back of my head was the worst in trying to get comfortable. The wires in my nose, and clip on my finger was irritating too. You might want to consider bringing your own pillow to make you feel more comfortable. I also brought ear plugs to block out the noise. I can sleep with ear plugs. Also, switch the finger clip to the pinkie right of the bat. I always wake up with index finger throbbing from the finger clip being too tight.

If you got sleep apnea, its a love/hate relationship with the CPAP (continuous possitive airway pressure) machine. When you get fitted for the mask ask for alternatives. There are plenty options. There is gold seal, breeze nasal pillows, and Respironics mask. Check out web sites for other options. I use two different masks depending on how I feel.

In fairness to Bolla, he's had a rough time with just two true post players in Tanya and Iwona in the first half of the seasson. That's why I love the addition of Hittle so much. Good things happen when she's out there simply because of her effort and physicality. More importantly, she takes a lot of pressure off of Tanya, who previously had to battle two bigs all by herself. Unfortunately, Iwona seems to have regressed a little bit since Hittle joined the lineup. Her two three-pointers were fine since she's capable of hitting them on a regular basis, but grabbing just two rebounds indicates that she's not spending enough time doing the things the team needs her to do.

The other problem is that the team lacks a true go-to scorer. Tanya gets her double-doubles every night by playing hard every possession, but she's not an especially skilled offensive player. Cariaga can stroke and crash and Liepkalne has a nice inside-outside game, but neither of them have consistently delivered down the stretch. Megan is streaky, and Keisha and Leilani are too inconsistent.

SteveM,

Good luck with that sleep test. I got comfortable enough once I settled in, but unhooking everything to go the bathroom was a pain, and it was kind of creepy knowing I was being monitored all night. I stopped using the CPAP after a few months because it was more disruptive than the apnea (which was diagnosed as moderate-to-severe).

Somebody needs to invent a friendlier sleep apnea test device for at home use. You hook it up at night and the data gets uploaded to a chip, memory card, disk or whatever and then the data is analyzed by a sleep apnea software program that produces reports that can be emailed to your doctor.

Several days of data could be captured over a period of time if a more complete history of your sleep patterns are needed. The device will eliminate any anxiety you would have sleeping in a different environment with wires attached to many parts of your body. You can also do it at your convenience.

Okay, back to UH sports...

Okay, If the players on the team are all Bolla recruits (besides walk-ons and crossover players) then he has to work with what he brought. Now if what Kazz is writing and what others have observed is true then I cannot see a coach not putting 100% effort the whole game. If a coach starts admitting defeat through his/her personal actions or non-actions on the bench then that coach does not deserve to lead the team.

Ugh back from lunch and I hope I can stay awake now...

But I spent most of it thinking about it and while being fired is always unpleasant, I just worry about the Wahine program.

$900,000+ to operate with just over $100,000 in revenue, NOT good obviously.

WarriorMojo,

Jim Bolla's comments weren't exactly the kind that would lead to controversy, but at the same time his tone and lack of anything positive to say said a lot and rubbed people the wrong way.

He touched on the officiating for starters then publically stated that he "had players coming to bench literally crying after missing a basket". Now, to me what coach says that and exposes his team on air like that?

WM, for a lack of a better explaination, it sounded like a fan was calling in after he had lost money on the Bows.

His closing comments were FAR from assuring that the team would be ready for the next match up also. With a sigh and a lack of words, it was all that was needed for me to understand that I guess he had no answers at all.

I personally can't recall a time where I heard a UH coach so disgusted over a loss that you soon forget about the loss and start to become upset with the coach's reaction.

I admit I swore out loud and threw my remote on the ground when we lost the Nevada game, but I soon forgot about it when I hopped in my car and listened to Jim Bolla on 1420 and I just felt bad for the Wahine who just made some errors at the wrong time, but played very well nonetheless.

Our female athletes are tough and they don't need sympathy from us, but the Wahine Basketball team has mine right now.

Kazz, I think Bolla needed a time-out for himself. He was still fuming when he got around to talking to the print guys. I think that loss was especially frustrating because the team seemed really close to making a breakthrough in their effort and play, only to unravel at the end. Tanya took it really hard afterward, too. It's a tough situation. Bolla wants and needs his young players to toughen up, but I think his approach is having the opposite effect on certain players. It's great to see Saundra, Keisha and Iwona smiling and having fun out there, but there are a lot of others who don't seem to be enjoying the game at all, and that's sad. I do love Megan's butt-kicker swagger, though.

Homey, an amoeba can only function in a petri dish and this year we are finding out not on a basketball court.

When I heard the Bolla interview on BC, the message I got at that time was that up till now, he was hampered from installing his system based on players he did not recruit. He was upbeat and said now he has his recruits and can start playing his style. I guess that style is what Homey referred to?

From Wikipedia,

Jim Bolla is the head women's basketball coach at the University of Hawaii. He is currently in his third season at Hawaii, and has compiled a 48-44 record in his first two seasons. His overall record as a head coach stands at 348-164. In the 2006 season, Hawaii went 18-10, and barely missed a WNIT bid. That squad finished third in the WAC that year.

From 1996-2004, he took a break from coaching, but before that he coached for 14 years at UNLV. He coached UNLV to a 300-120(.714) record, including seven NCAA tournament appearances, and 11 20 win seasons. During the 1989-1990 season, UNLV moved to second in the nation, which is the highest ranking in school history. That team finished with a 28-3 record, the best mark in school history.

He was a three time Big West coach of the year award winner, because of his work at UNLV. He coached six all-americans, three Big West player of the year winners, and 24 all conference selections. UNLV won seven Big West titals under his leadership. He served as the athletic director at UNLV after coaching there from 1996-2004.

He played basketball at Pittsburgh. There he was the starting center for the basketball team from 1973 to 1975. The 1974 team was nationally ranked at 10th in the nation, and featured a school record 22 game winning streak. The Panthers ultimately lost in the Elite Eight. Following graduation, he served as an assistant coach on both the men and women's squads.

Just to clarify, so you sometimes have that hat on, sit in the front row, WITH the green megaphone, and is always going "ahhhhhh hut hut hut hut hut hut ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" at the refs and opposing team?

I just want to make sure because I want to say right now... I AM A FAN OF YOUR WORK! LOL!!!

Hahaha!! Me and my friends were sitting almost center court behind the team benches but closer to the visiting side and I can always hear you.

But yeah, I finish work at 7pm on night of the Fresno State game so I'll try to rush it to Manoa (I work on Kapiolani) asap hopefully before the end of the first half.

I want to see how the team will rebound.

When I had my heart attack at work, I dragged my arse out of here and drove myself to the hospital.
When I had a TIA, I said I couldn't work. One of the bosses at the time, David Montesino, said I had to come in. So, even though I spent the night in the hospital, I went to work, typed up stories, then went home, and slept on the floor because I was in pain.

Another D-IA team may be coming to Texas. I wonder what conference they will get into...my guess is that only the Sun Belt (North Texas is in it) might take them.

Students at Texas State are scheduled to vote today and Wednesday on a referendum that would authorize fee increases to support a move to the Football Bowl Subdivision.

The FBS, formerly known as Division I-A, is the highest level of college football. Results of the vote are expected to be released Thursday, a university spokesman said.

If the vote passes, the fee increase would be subject to approval by the Texas State University System Board of Regents.

Texas State has played at the Division I-AA level (recently renamed the Football Championship Subdivision, or the FCS) since 1984.

CSTV is being renamed. The only bad thing about this is that the upgraded channel will probably help the MWC, since CSTV has the rights to some of their games.

CBS Sports today announced a comprehensive reorganization of its college sports operations, incorporating the cable, broadcast and online activities of College Sports Television (CSTV) into its world-famous brand.

Effective March 2008, CSTV will become the CBS COLLEGE SPORTS NETWORK, bringing the power of the CBS SPORTS name to yet another developing, cross-platform property. In addition, CBS Sports will begin developing proprietary programming for the cable network, and incorporate the growing online activities of CSTV into its industry-leading online operations.

As part of the reorganization, a new emphasis will be placed on developing original programming for the CBS COLLEGE SPORTS NETWORK, drawing on the top on-air and creative talents in the industry. Anchoring the lineup will be COLLEGE SPORTS TONIGHT, a news and information program examining the day's developments in the world of collegiate sports, and providing previews of upcoming events. The program will air twice a night. COLLEGE SPORTS TONIGHT is just one of many new programs to be featured on the CBS COLLEGE SPORTS NETWORK. Additional programming will be announced shortly.

ST,

A lot of schools have those high school liason positions...they help relationships with the high schools and coaches. That on-campus coach basically takes administrative load away from the coaches. Since the positions do not count towards the assistant limit, it helps the teams by freeing up the coaches to coach.

Along with the trip west, the Cowboys also plan to travel to Denver for a couple of days of training-camp practices with the Broncos.

Because of a conflict with the Alamodome in San Antonio, the Cowboys have been forced to find an alternative location for camp this year. The team is in negotiations with the city of Oxnard, Calif., which hosted Cowboys camp from 2003-2006.

Pomai,

Yeah it's been rough for the Rainbow Wahine, but win-loss records don't bother me too much as I always look to have fun at the games.

This whole Jim Bolla thing probably would not have been brought up by me in the first place had his post game interview really got me going, and others too apparently.

But the program does need a jumpstart in attendance and support.

Again, a program that needs $900,000.00 to operate and only brings in just over $100,000.00 needs to be looked at by the new AD. Not just coaching of course, but some marketing as well. Maybe some cross-promotions with another UH program that has more momentum.

Last season I suggested that an autograph signing by the football team prior to their departure to NOLA after the Wahine Basketball game in the SSC and on the court would have been ideal.

Get people to pay admission to the game ($6.00) and have the session start at the end of the game. Plus the closer one sits the closer they will be to getting autographs.

With the increased female demographic of fans because of the football team's success, the younger female fans (ages 8-15, for example) could have been hooked in to Wahine Basketball, thus getting more fans in the process and who knows who else would have been new Wahine basketball fans.

Sure there could have been risks like idiots chanting "WE WANT COLT" or "end the game", but the positives outweigh the negatives in my mind.

Plus they could have ceased the sales to maybe 2,000 people and not have a clusterf*** on the soccer field in the hot sun.

It looks like the Director of on-campus recruiting handles correspondence for recruiting. Doesn't that make him something like an assistant recruiter? Basically, a recruiter who doesn't coach? He cannot go off-campus for recruiting but it looks like he's in charge of Junior Days and on-campus recruiting visits.

He was a LB for Texas but mostly played special teams. He was special teams MVP the first year that Texas won the Rose Bowl. Any special teams standout has my respect.

Handles all aspects of on-campus recruiting including the arrangement of lodging, meals, travel and visit itineraries... Also handles correspondence and assigns and monitors a recruiting management program for the SMU staff; Playing Experience: A three-year Longhorn letterwinner... Named the team's special teams MVP in 2004... Was a four-time member of the Big 12 Honor Roll and a nominee for the 2004 Bobby Bowden Award; Education: Earned a B.S. in Corporate Communication (`05) and an M.Ed. in Sport Management (`07) from Texas

JJ hired Tam Hollingshead who played at SMU (he was an All-State high school player and won 2 state titles), won a state title at Odessa Permian as a coach, coached at Texas A&M for 9 years, and was a head coach at Rockwall Heath the last 3 years. This guy is known by every high school coach in Texas...that will really help their recruiting in the state!

TSAIKO ALERT!

I just got off the phone with Bulla. He is at Queen’s Hospital awaiting gall bladder removal some time tomorrow.

As always the big guy is in great spirits. He checked in to Queens on Monday as he could no longer stand the pain. He’ll probably be able to see visitors from Thursday, giving him at least a day to recover. Although, he says he’ll be home on Friday.

In the meantime, lets all take a moment to pray for the bald one and his wife and children.

Sleep apnea... is that when you stop breathing in your sleep.

I swear over the last month I have woken up to myself gasping for air as if I breathed in wrong in the middle of the night.

Oddly enough the alarm clock is at the foot of my bed so when I sit up I can always see the time and it happened several times at around 3am... (twilight music plays)

This is obviously in addition to the one more coach that he said he is currently interviewing for. If I remember correctly he said that coach would be an offensive line/running backs coach. Guava,

Well, the players play the game and I haven't heard any of them publically state that they feel the same way some fans and commentators do.

That's all we fans can do. Whether it be to whine, complain, cheer, send e-mails, attend rallies, send in testimonials, etc...

So, if Jim Leahey says that there just seems to be a heavy slant against UH and fans feel that way (like me, LOL) then oh well.

Different story if I was a coach or a player having that attitude then of course it's not acceptable.

But as fans, we pay the right to be as "whiney" as possible.

WAC refs are awful. chawan_cut knows — Maniacs have a great view of the court. I have watched game after game, call after terrible call from my seat. If you watch me during the game, half the time I look like a young Riley Wallace, ranting and yelling at the refs. I'm just glad these calls haven't affected the decisions of games too often over the past few years.

Sleep apnea — don't forget that Reggie White had it too. It's something serious, and to be taken care of. Thankfully, the technology (however cumbersome) is good at helping.

I think when Jim Leahey goes off on L&L on PBS or on the radio about his theories about how Hawaii always gets shafted in one way or another, I am more amused than energized.

I mean, we as fans are NEVER going to be truly unbiased and will always favor our team whenever there is some kind of controversy involved (i.e. 2007 Men's Basketball game AT Nevada), but for me I just start cracking up.

I mean here is Jim Leahey. The VOICE of UH sports since... wow... a long time.

He's respected and he's always there calling the action. The image of consistancy, if you will.

Then here is this public figure that is so well-known in Hawaii going off in an almost psychopathic tanget about how UH is the butt of every joke to the mainland sports media.

That feeds on the doubt and cynicism in the back of the people's minds and it strikes that nerve of "us vs them".

I get a kick out of it, but at the same time it doesn't get my blood boiling, and it certainly won't make me wanna spit in Karl Benson's coffee if I had the chance. (note to self)

I mean, who cannot enjoy an older, eloquent gentleman going off the wall with allegations of shenanigans on sports officials.

Besides what tommui said about a heart attack and shortening your life span, sleep apnea people also tend to fall asleep at the wheel. If you feel more tired when you wake up than when you went to bed, its time to get checked out ASAP.

Sleep apnea also affects people who are not obese. I'm 175 lb. and 5'9'', and have moderate to severe sleep apnea. I also run 6-10 miles and lift weights 3x week. I did a CAT scan and found that I have an unusally small opening in my trachea from my soft pallate. So, genetics can be a factor in sleep apnea.

Best wishes to Bulla.

In my opinion, anyone looking for news on JJ can find it, but on the front page of the Honolulu website???

I have nothing against JJ. He did some great things for UH. But it's in the past.

He owes us nothing, but we owe him nothing. And since the paper in a sense is the public voice, I think it's ridiculous to make JJ football a matter of local news.
It ain't cuz that era is over.

Mack is here, and it's Mack Time. That's local.

Anyone wanting JJ news doesn't have to look far -- Dallas news is online, and even Rivals carried JJ news today. But whoever keeps making JJ a local news story is guilty of man love gone wild, and I just think it's wrong.

I know not everyone agrees, but I'd like the Advertiser to have my input on what is newsworthy locally, not to mention the breaking news.

I mean all this talk about retiring #15 for Colt is good and all, but what about the "legends" that built the program...?
What about guys like Niko and Al Noga, still, to this day, in my opnion anyway, the two best U-H football players to ever walk that campus.
I mean I love all what Brennan achieved as much as the next guy, but if we retire #15, then we NEED to retire #54.
Oh, and like I posted earlier, I love Tanuvasa as well and I applaud his entry into the circle of honor, but are either of the Noga brothers honored as well...?

Oh, and just because he directed the most MEMORABLE win of my lifetime, and many others on this blog, shouldn't #18 be retired for Garrett Gabriel...?

Can we "retire" numbers without retiring them? Otherwise one day we'll have a QB with A7 as his number.

I think we should honor many players of the past and recent past by framing their jerseys and putting them on a wall. Kind of like the circle of honor but easier to see from afar. I have no idea where we would put them though. Aloha Stadium is kind of an embarassing place to do it. Maybe someday we'll get a new stadium. I still think Ala Wai Golf Course is a great place for a new staduim (sorry golfers) or maybe Sand Island?

Too busy to respond to blog comments until very early tomorrow morning, but I do have updated information about the Search Committee.

In the meantime, remember we have two men's volleyball tickets to give away - you can sit anywhere in the arena, but they do have to be for the same night we'll be attending.

That will be Thursday this week or on Wednesday, March 5 or on Saturday, March 22.

Please send an e-mail to swood at hokudotcom with your real name, blog name, and phone number(s) to we can firm up the date. Once we decide a date, we'll leave the tickets at the box office for you.

We'll be at the baseball game on Friday and Saturday afternoon before heading back inside to see the men's basketball game.

Please drop by to say hello at the various games.

It was a stunner to see the Wahine lose on Saturday. That must have been a huge disappointment to turn an 11 point lead into a 5 point loss in less than 8 minutes playing time.

Bulla Get betta soon - no need da gall bladder so you won't even miss it in a few weeks.

Kekoa: Give your dad a hug for me.

Hi-Ho Hi-Ho It's off to work I go.

Obstructive sleep apnea by definition is a sleeping disorder characterized by cessation of breathing, and could be functional or anatomical in origin. Symptoms include snoring, hypersomnelence, irritability, fatigue, memory loss, depression, decreased concentration and/or focus, and even psychosis. Untreated sleep apnea can cause hypertension, and yes, heart disease. Thyroid disorders must always be ruled out. The diagnosis can be made clinically but for medical coverage's sake, a sleep study is done to confirm the disorder and evaluate the severity to determine medical approval for management, including a CPAP machine, or surgery.

Kazz...good luck. For all those snorers out there...think about it.

From Scout.com:

WAC Recruiting - Hawaii Listed @ #4

4. Hawaii
The class is heavy on ... Playmakers for the passing game and defensive backs. June Jones isn't there anymore, but the program isn't going to ditch the high-octane passing attack that led to so much recent success. JUCO transfers Greg Alexander and Brent Rausch will each get every shot to win the starting quarterback job, while five JUCO transfers will compete to fill in the ten-mile wide holes at receiver. The secondary is loaded with good new corners with three excellent high school prospects to mix in with JUCO transfers Jeramy Bryant and Chris Black.
The player who'll someday be a really big deal ... OG Tui'atua Tuiasosopo
The player you might care about this year ... QB Greg Alexander

What it all means to the real world of college football ... The program wasn't able to build on last year's monster season with the coaching change killing all momentum, but that didn't stop a slew a decent offensive talent from coming in. The problem with recruiting at Hawaii is the lack of options. If the program doesn't get EVERY in-state prospect, it's in trouble, and it lost a few key ones. New head man Greg McMackin has a lot of work to do, and he'll need to come up with another good year to prove

Regarding the retirement of jersey numbers: shouldn't longevity in the NFL count for at least part of the criteria? Al Noga, devastating as a defensive tackle in college because he could destroy any offensive lineman one-on-one, but converted to a defensive end by the Vikings because that's what he was sized for, and everyone knows how that turned out. But if you retire any number, you have to retire Jason Elam's, because he succeeded in the NFL, too.

peronally, i don't see any football player's number being retired. only because as it is with the 108 man roster every number is used and many duplicate numbers to those who would never play offense and defense nor special teams.

but, give credit to those in the past who wore the fabled number 54 and now number 15.

its a good thing bess and rgm decided to forego their senior year or we would have two more of those storied numbers.

Aren't you supposed to take a cooked potato mixed with boric acid, placed along the walking pattern of the ants, and they eat it and go somewhere else to die? Or does that only work with roaches?

How do you place potato on the wall cause that's where the ants walk.

They go into small crevices between the wood panels.

My theory is that they are eating dead termites cause what else could be inside the walls.

Consider the zero-emmission Honda too. The Prius is very efficient in gas but there is the hidden cost of replacing that big battery once or twice during the time you won the car. Just so you know.

Snow, anyone? We've got enough in the mountains to share. I never thought that I would ever wear a t-shirt or complain about the heat when it's just under 60 degrees outside. I wish I could take advantage of the mountain snow and go skiing but money issues and my three jobs stand in my way.

Looks like USC won't be moving their home games to the Rose Bowl. Amazingly, USC has veto power over the NFL playing at the Coliseum.

USC and the Coliseum Commission have tentatively agreed on a lease that will keep the Trojans playing football at the historic stadium for the next 25 years, multiple sources said Tuesday.

The commission will vote today on a nonbinding letter of intent that sets the terms of the deal. The sides would then have 60 days to formalize the contract.

The agreement would put to rest talk of USC moving its home games to the Rose Bowl and would give the school veto power on any potential arrangement between the Coliseum and NFL.

Update on the Reggie Bush court case.

The already-contentious civil lawsuit against Reggie Bush grew even more acrimonious Tuesday when the plaintiff walked out of a pretrial deposition in San Diego, angry that Bush's attorneys had brought along an armed, plain-clothed security guard.

The midday incident sparked a flurry of accusations between lawyers representing each side.

Bush's attorney, David Cornwell, said he felt the need for protection because Lloyd Lake, the man suing his client, is a convicted felon and documented gang member.

Lake's attorney said the "big, heavyset" security guard flashed a holstered handgun and initially refused to identify himself.

"If you're going to have a security guard there . . . have a licensed security guard with a uniform and a business card," lawyer Brian Watkins said. "Why bring this secretive guy who won't tell us who he is? That's witness intimidation."

Bush, meanwhile, is scheduled to be deposed Feb. 25, at which time Lake's attorneys said they will ask him under oath if he received cash gifts while at USC.

Such testimony could be important to the NCAA's ongoing investigation.

Bush's lawyers "are using their last bit of scare tactics right now," Watkins said. "They're pulling out all the stops because they know February 25 is Reggie Bush's day of reckoning."

We have a measles outbreak in San Diego...now we are at 10 kids with a couple of schools and a day care all exposed to the virus. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the outbreak is centered around one school that had the lowest rate of immunization to the measles.

My kids are immunized. I feel extra sorry for the kids under 1 year old, since they were too young to get a shot and they are so young that the measles could be a big problem for them.

If you are coming to San Diego, I hope you are immunized!
