Brennan credited with 100 percent accuracy in today's drills

INDIANAPOLIS — In an astonishing display of accuracy, Colt Brennan was credited with completing 100 percent of his passes during drills today at the NFL Scouting Combine in the RCA Dome.
Of his 21 passes, 20 were caught. A chest-high pass was dropped, but it was so accurate Brennan was credited with a completion.
"This is one big hurdle I cleared," said Brennan, who endured criticism because of his weight and perceived lack of arm strength.
But Brennan reported to the combine weighing 207 pounds, and today he showed his arm strength (two of the completions were for 45 yards) in disciplines ranging from 5-yard outs to streak patterns.
Brennan worked out with a group that included UH teammates Davone Bess and Ryan Grice-Mullins.
One of the drills was a route in which the receiver ran 5 yards straight, then cut to the left. Brennan and Bess were randomly paired for that play, which was the Warriors' money short-yardage play the past two seasons. Brennan easily completed the pass to Bess.
Brennan drew applause from the players and coordinators when he completed a 45-yard pass to DeSean Jackson. It was a difficult throw in which Jackson ran straight 10 yards, cut 5 yards to the left, then sprinted to the right.
The report on his drills showed 19 of Brennan's passes were perfect. Two were slightly off the mark, but were caught, anyway.
"I was really happy," Brennan said. "There are so many misconceptions, so many untruths out there, about what I am as a quarterback and what I can do. It's mostly those Internet sites. Their perception is heard, and it's like 'telephone.' People around the country hear these things and assume them."
Only players and drill coordinators were allowed on the field. Scouts were in the stands. Reporters from 25 news agencies, including The Honolulu Advertiser, were allowed to watch from the luxury suites.

* * *

Jason Rivers' best time in the 40-yard dash was 4.55 seconds.
Rivers had hoped to run in the low 4.4s. He consistently ran in the low 4.4s while training in Colorado. A fast time likely would have elevated him into the first two rounds.
Bess ran the 40 in an electrically timed 4.62 seconds. He was hand-timed at 4.57 seconds.
Grice-Mullins ran it in 4.46 seconds, although his agent said he also was clocked at 4.45.

now is the time for Colt to shine. do the drills, stay calm, and show everyone why he is one of the most productive quarterbacks in NCAA history.

i am not saying that he should be a starter next season in the NFL, but should he be on someone's roster as a back up? Hell yeah he should, look at Doug Flutie, what was he5'9 on a good day?

Go get'em Colt, stick it right up where the sun don't shine to the critics....

I don't think the critics or pundits have a personal dislike of Colt Brennan, he is just trying to buck a decades-long trend of UH QBs not making it to the next level. I'm sure once these critics are proven wrong, they'll be back on the bandwagon like they were when the team was 10-0, 11-0. Unfortunately the history is this: June Jones era QBs have ended up in Europe or in Arena league, so expectations are low. But Accuracy is a rare commodity, Colt has it and some of these guys (cough,
Andre Woodson, cough) don't.

And, thank you for the heads up on Target. By the time I showed up 15 minutes after opening there were only 10 units left. The clerks were going crazy, too. One said that it was as bad as Black Friday with people actually running. By the time I left the checkout there was not one left on the shelf. Dang!

Good for Colt, but I'm much more concerned about Rivers and Bess. RGM ran right where he needed to be, and I think with continued success in the shuttle runs and at the pro day, he can solidify a spot in the 5th round, maybe even 4th.

But J-Riv had to run at least a 4.50 and Davone had to break 4.58, IMO, to keep or improve their stock. And it's not that the track is extraordinarily slow — NFL Draft Countdown has reported that Dexter Jackson (App St) ran 4.27, DeSean Jackson (Cal) and Andre Caldwell (Florida) 4.31, William Franklin (Missouri) 4.32, Devin Thomas (Mich St) 4.34, Donnie Avery (Houston) 4.40, James Hardy (Indiana), Limas Sweed (Texas), and Jerome Simpson (Coastal Carolina) 4.47. Adarius Bowman (Oklahoma St) 4.69 and Mario Manningham (Michigan) 4.59 amongst the other slow, disappointing times.

Thankfully, they have a pro day to help them, although we all remember how slow the track was last year. But this is exactly what I was worried about; sadly, their stock could plummet. And I mean plummet. Without looking at the 10- and 20-yard times, I'd have to say a drop to the 6th or 7th round — this is a strong WR class this year, you have to show you belong or you'll get left behind. And the concerns for these guys were top-end speed.
Permalink 02/24/08 @ 08:28
Comment from: Tony [Visitor]
I can see why they were so concerned about Colt's weight, all these QBs that you never heard of, they are ALL 6-3, at least 220, and they are all lean.

Great job by Colt in the passing drills! 20-21, including two passes each for 45 yards, is awesome! Some NFL draft folks will be impressed with his accuracy, like his passing today was a surprise...but UH fans *know* how accurate Colt is!

It is great that Colt's weight change from 185 to 207 did NOT affect his accuracy. He addressed the weight isue and he showed he can throw accurately while having to drop back. Putting him in throwing drills with the other QBs in the draft is a great way for the NFL to see how great he really is...Matt Ryan is lucky he skipped the throwing drills today.

Re: Matt Ryan, so if you already have been tabbed as the first QB to be drafted, it's customary to basically no-show the combine so you don't jeopardize your standing? That's kinda bogus.
Permalink 02/24/08 @ 09:20
Comment from: Garret [Visitor]

I agree with Jason about how RGM did well today with his running. It would have been nice for Bess and Rivers to have run a little faster like they had been doing in training. Maybe the track was slower than their training surface...

The WRs still have pro day to improve their times. They already have a lot of positive stuff on tape for the scouts to see their routes and hands. The only big concern I've been reading about is speed...

Good Morning

Of the 333 players invited to
this year NFL Combine,I've
made mention on other blogs of
how I was disappointed that
OG,Hercules Satele,was not invited.

So much so,that,on the NFL.
coms website there is an "ask
a draft expert" section that
invites fans to ask questions.

And I did just that.

With pretend politeness,I asked,"if it was an oversight
or mistake that Hercules
wasnt invited to the Combine?

To all the players from Hawaii, who carry the dream of playing at the next level,
trading in your rubber slip-
pers for silver is a trans-
action worthy of every effort.
And I'm pleased to see the
other four doing well at the
Combine.

To Hercules,whom I think is
more deserving of superlatives
and getting a shot,this fan
will carry your torch. And remain vigil,in absence of a
lost weekend at the Combine to
prove yourself,that draft day
will be more deserving.

Sooo happy for Colt! After injuries at Senior Bowl, the stomach flu (2X), and idiots like Kiper, it's time he made his own luck! WTG Colt! Other QB's may equal his performance (100%) but NO ONE is going to beat that.

Disappointed for DB and JR in the 40. I had posted after the beginning of the year (and late at night) that I doubted that they would run well if their mindset was that they HAD to run a certain number. A person in that situation will subtlely and unconsciously tighten up. For a sprinter, that's the recipe for a subpar performance. Been watching sprints for 45 years and have never seen someone hit their mark under those circumstances.

I still think they can be successful in the NFL, but, as Jason said, their draft positions just took a direct hit.

Congrats to Colt for that unbelievable performance!! I hope that this + the weight gain will shut the majority of the detractors up; won't hold my breath though as we all know that ignorance dies hard & pompous asses like Kiper never seem to go away, regardless of their lack of credibility. Still, it's two huge obstacles he's gotten past; it looks like clear sailing from here on in. I reiterate he'll be a steal in the 2nd round if these idiots aren't bright enough to grab him in the 1st. Go Colt!!

Nope, Ronnie is right (again - always!) -

The nfl.com just posted the RB 40 times and Chris Johnson (RB - ECU) had the fastest time of 4.24. It's weird that they posted McFadden's slower time of 4.33 - and not the 4.27 that he ran on his first try.

RB Name Time
Johnson, Chris 4.24
McFadden, Darren 4.33

So back to Ronnie's question: Why isn't RGM time of 4.46 listed among the top WR times?

Based on a demonstration of what the QB's were supposed to do, the live throwing to a receiver was done without snap and how players move is up to them as long as they time the throw to the reciever. It is a test of accuracy mainly-- they film every throw from three different cameras.

Footwork is evaluated by throwing at target players and coaches will ask for a 3,5, 7 step drop. Players are also told to roll and pivot, etc., and also to respond to the coaches wave-- wave right you go right, wave left go left, etc. and then you throw to the target to simulate responding to the rush and stepping up or moving in the pocket depending on what coaches ask. Again every throw is video'd.

They also put QB's on a radar gun to check the velocity of their passes.

Aloha Kakahiaka!

I am going to puke if I keep watching the NFL Combine and Mayock's dissing of Colt.

Colt looks buff, he's not smiling much, has his game face on.

When he is throwing, Mayock is dropping Colt's stock - even when you are watching him do a good job!

On the ribbons above, Colt's name pops up 3rd or 4th, I think in the bench press!

During his LONG pass, the announcers are talking about Booty and are on Booty's face. You see Colt throw- med. effort, just his face and shoulder, in front of Booty while they are still talking about him, and then a burst of applause from Booty for Colt's throw.
Not a word about Colt.

Lots of talk and short pieces about the "favorites", and Colt is not among them. While it is irritating, I can't help but feel that the coaches are looking and not listening and Colt will be THE MAN and find a great job with the right team.!!!

Going back to watch.

Tony,

You are correct...though each team really won't want to say nice things about players that they want to draft--they don't want other teams to take the players they like! So, we are stuck with the analysts who don't know how the teams really feel.
Permalink 02/24/08 @ 12:42

The Ravens are looking to draft a QB, so this Annapolis paper went over the QBs in the draft. Unfortunately they went to Kiper for their Colt info.

As the Baltimore Ravens' delegation of scouts, coaches and executives descend on Indianapolis later this week for the annual NFL scouting combine, they're expected to devote a heavy portion of their time toward evaluating the quarterback prospects.

That due diligence will include a long look at Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan, who's regarded as the top passer available by most draft analysts.

That interest is not only sparked by the Ravens' uncertain quarterback situation with veteran Steve McNair recovering from surgery to his non-throwing shoulder following a diastrous season marred by injuries, backup Kyle Boller's inconsistency and former Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith being relatively unproven, but also Ryan's size, arm strength, accuracy and pocket presence.

Due to a slight build, questionable velocity and the perception that he's a product of the University of Hawaii system, Colt Brennan isn't expected to be picked until the fifth or sixth round despite career totals of 14,193 yards and 131 touchdown passes.

"Booty is more of a Chad Pennington type who manages the game and doesn't have the big arm," Kiper said. "He throws a lot of underneath stuff. Brennan is going to have to wait a while to hear his name called.

Now here's Colt Brennan. What do you think of him, Mike Mayock? ..,
He's been on a downslide and it started with the Bowl game against Georgia, not his fault, he got knocked down, he got 8 sacks and beat up. He's not a big as people thought. When we finally got a chance to measure him and look at him in person, he's gained 15 pounds since the Senior Bowl. He's now over 200 pounds... but he's got a very average arm, at best.

Top-rated QB Matt Ryan didn’t throw or do any drills. He kept his sweatshirt on the whole time.

The quarterbacks in the second group were awful. Stanford’s David Ostrander and Nebraska’s Sam Keller were the worst. As one observer put it “Imagine what it’s like to be a receiver hungry to make an impression on this big stage and the quarterback can’t throw a ball you can catch.”…

Nebraska’s Maurice Purify seemed the most affected. He was plagued by bad passes throughout his drills. …

Also- the comments were made that the "best" guys may want to be looked at under controlled conditions- throwing to the people they are used to and in a place where they can best show their stuff. Besides, their body of work in College can speak for itself.

It was seen as risky for some of the front-runners to show at the Combine- a bad day could drop their stock. Guys with low stock could use a good day at the Combine to move up.

But for viewers like myself, listing to comments about Booty and look and him standing in the crowd while Colt was throwing his long ball was irritating.

Hawaii QB Colt Brennan helped himself when he weighed in at 207 pounds. While it probably is not a true 207, it shows, that given a season or two in an NFL weight program, he should be able to get to 210/215 pounds.
There is a way to fake a weight at the Combine?

I remember Colt's defeated look after the sugar bowl. It was difficult seeing that. He even said concedingly, "now the critics will have a field day". It takes a very special kind of person to get back up again and excuse the cliche," to prove himself" to those people who matter the most- coaches, managers, owners and franchises who are interested in him, and of course the fans, who believe in him; not the Mel Kiper's of the world. So on this day, we celebrate with him, and patiently await the next accomplishement.

Sheesh, I'm Googling around, looking at the NFL "I'm taking my ball and going home" Network website, hardly seeing any Combine news of interest. Aside from Mayock's Kiperesque blather and plenty of coverage on the annointed first-round draft picks (and, um, Flacco...sounds like a good QB, but come on, you just know they're covering him because of his sheer height and arm strength...and even then, praising him for 18-yard passes? That's a little much.). I did see that real quick shot of Colt finishing up a throw while Booty looked on behind and gave a little round of applause, though.

Re: Mayock.
What bothers me is that Mayock tries to come across as a know-it-all, which is really imposssible given the difficult situation. I have a hard enough time following one team. How the heck can anybody follow 600 players?
When I quizzed him on the UH receivers, he retreated to the "system" mode. I was like, what specifically is wrong with the system? He said it has too many patterns you don't see in pro football, like the bubble screens. They don't run the bubble screen in the NFL? Then what the heck is Tom Brady throwing?
But, and I hate to tell you this, folks, but Mayock is a nice guy.

Watched what I could of the combine on the NFL network - Colt looked fantastic. His throws were strong, had that quick release we've all seen, and amazingly accurate. The extra weight seems to have helped, as well as being 100% healthy.

Stephen, interesting to hear about Mayock making comments without actually having seen the game film. And by the way, Mayock was SINGING about Josh Johnson... makes you wonder, yeah?

You are too funny. Can't be sure but common mango trees were not valued so much when the hybrid varieties like the hayden and pirie fruit became more prized = trees cut down and replaced. Too bad.

Also, pls don't be slighted by my previous comment. Need to eat and talk with you one more time before it's a done deal. Hope it's soon. Aloha!

Stephen, thanks for the feedback from the combine. I did hear Mayock admit the Sugar Bowl performance wasn't entirely Colts doing.

One thing I need clarity on...are these guys on Colt because of past run and shoot types like Klingler and Andre Ware? Or have they actually watched him enough to make these comments. Reason I ask is Mayock is in love with Flacco who looked awful during a drill I caught on NFL network. Yet he then said the passes were irrelevant. It was about footwork. If thats the case, do you know the impression scouts, coaches had with Colts footwork?

I will be the first to admit that I am biased towards Colt, but his score was perfect and appears to be outperforming all the other QBs! What else does he need to do for self-proclaimed analysts and tv folks to notice him? Do a handstand while riding a bucking bronco?

The suggestion that NFL teams won't make too many obvious enthusiastic comments on players they're highly interested in lest the competition steals them from under them makes sense and is consoling. I guess we'll never really know how our boys do until the draft. And even then, we'll still have to wait on how they do with their teams.

After looking tiny and getting killed by the media at the Senior Bowl, Hawaii QB Colt Brennan has done well so far at the Combine. As mentioned yesterday, he helped himself by weighing in at more than 200 pounds (207), and even more important, he was very sharp in pass drops, got rid of the ball quickly and got better zip on his throws than expected.

Hawaii’s Ryan Grice-Mullen (5-10, 187) hasn’t yet talked personally with New England representatives, but he said his agent may have already. That should come as no surprise, as Grice-Mullen, who has started for the Rainbow Warriors since his freshman year, is used to catching a lot of passes in their run-and-shoot offense.

“New England and the Colts throw the ball 50 times a game, just like we do [at Hawaii],” he observed. “They got a slot receiver, Wes Welker, who caught 100 balls this year. You see a lot of teams going that way.

“But I don’t consider myself just a slot receiver,” he added. “I can do both [play slot and flanker].”

He also has a great deal of confidence in his ability to read complex defenses, something he’d certainly have to do in New England’s offense.

“I’d say 9 out of 10, or 10 out of 10. That’s how much confidence I have in myself to read defenses. From day one in this [Hawaii] offense, you don’t see the field unless you know how to read defenses and know your plays. All of our routes are based off of reads. You could have five routes on one play.”

True. True. Footwork is key but, when was the last time we ever heard of a QB being complemented for great footwork after several incomplete passes, yeah? Mayok's a turd!

hoohikimaui-

I feel your frustration. All this commentating is network gibberish. It's what the 24/7 365 football fans wanna hear.

I'm pretty sure NFL teams are not gonna let Kipes or Mayoks convoluted opinions influence their multi-million dollar decisions.

Colt was given the opportunity and delivered a solid performance. His demo definitely solidified his credentials as a prospect with the scouts.

I'm bias too. Colts gonna make it. Not sure when he'll go. But that's irrelevant. All that braddah needs is a chance.

The way I look at it, good to see all the other QB's go first. That usually means they'll go to weak struggling teams in need of a turn around ASAP. Sure they'll play but under extreme scrutiny and pressure. Colt being picked later may go to a better more established team that will slowly groom him to be their future QB.

INDIANAPOLIS — Hawaii's prolific duo of quarterback Colt Brennan and wide receiver Davone Bess created buzz with strong showings in Sunday's quarterback-receiver workout group at the NFL scouting combine.

Brennan showed good accuracy, velocity and footwork as he re-inflated his stock that seemed to be plummeting coming off a 41-10 loss to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

He helped dispel doubts about his ability to transition from former Hawaii coach June Jones' spread, shotgun offense. And the 6-2 quarterback is up to 207 pounds after dropping to 185 at the Senior Bowl following a bout with the stomach flu.

"All the criticism I've gotten in the last couple weeks, especially since the bowl game, it's actually put me at ease," Brennan said. "My whole life it seems like everyone said I wasn't going to be able to do it…

You know I have been thinking about this for the last two months. I really believe that the BCS purposely put UH in the Sugar Bowl because they wanted UH to be embarrassed, they knew that odds of UH pulling an upset would be great. Had they put them in any other bowl game and the odds of us pulling out a win would have been a lot better. Just one more way to put down the non-BCS conferences. Because I really think Georgia should have been in the NC game rather than Ohio, I know they couldn't because LSU and Georgia are in the same conference but I think they where the best two team in the country.

You may have seen this already, but maybe others would be interested. Makes your 2nd round prediction more than willful thinking.

for the first time since drafting quarterback Alex Smith three years ago, the 49ers brass said they’d also consider drafting a quarterback. Smith is expected to compete with recently re-signed Shaun Hill for the starting spot, but the 49ers could look for another young quarterback to groom as a backup.... "Accuracy, accuracy, accuracy. And then after that, accuracy,” is what Martz said he looks for. "The accuracy is what I fall in love with. That's what I'm enamored with, the ball location and where the ball is put, because it takes great skill on their part, awareness and their ability to see..."

Building cohesion between qb's and receivers can take yrs. I'd love for the NFL to see what everyone in Hawaii was privy to these past three yrs. June taught Colt to read Pro coverages as well as having the receivers learn to find the gaps. Get an o-line that gives him the time he needs and you can fagetaboutit. We've watched Bess, Mullins and Rivers not even break stride on their catches. Colt would hit them in anticipation of their breaks on their patterns. Put them back together and they'll open those skeptical eyes.

It's intriguing to think that the 49ers, given enough influence from Martz, might take Brennan in the draft. (And wouldn't it be great if Brennan could someday throw to Bess/Grice-Mullen/Rivers, just like "old" times?)

Question is, do the 49ers have the raw talent on offense, aside from Frank Gore (and gotta give a biased shout-out to Hawaii vets like Lelie!), for Brennan to work his magic? Don't really follow the NFL, but the 49ers had a rough 2007. Martz seems to be pretty effective at his job from my quick Wikipedia search, but he might be a grating personality too.

Gigi, this is from Wikipedia...Plunkett guided Oakland to nine victories in eleven games and a playoff berth as a wild-card. Then, even more remarkably, rather than suffering an early defeat which marks the typical fate of NFL wild card teams, Plunkett led the Raiders to four playoff victories, including the first-ever victory by a wild card team in the Super Bowl, defeating the Philadelphia Eagles, 27-10, in Super Bowl XV. Throwing for 261 yards and three touchdowns, Plunkett was named the game's MVP.

After returning to the backup role in 1983, Plunkett again took over starting duties, this time after an injury to Wilson. The Raiders advanced to Super Bowl XVIII, where they dominated the Washington Redskins, 38-9, in the most one-sided game in Super Bowl history to that point. Plunkett completed 16 of 25 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown in the game.

Plunkett spent most of his last three seasons either injured or as a backup. He retired after the 1986 season, and is currently the fourth-leading passer in Raiders history.

The Punahou kids have a rest day on March 26th, and can hang with your kids all...they can meet your group directly at D-Land and partner up. Mike Pavich is the Head Coach, a Kamehameha School & UCLA alumnus. I mentioned to him today at a trip fund raising car wash that I would ask you about it...he thought it would be a great learning experience for all involved. Almost time for sleep but Gigi, I don't vote for the Oscars. Although I'm a member of the Producer's Guild (which I voted "Old Country" for the PGA best picture asward), I'm not an Academy Member. Don't know if I mentioned this, but I accidentally managed to walk on the Red Carpet Friday night. A friend was celebrating 40 years of life and the party was connected to the Kokak Theatre. Long story short...due to detours of re-routing people, I ended up where I shouldn't have been. It's funny, because I'm there every year for the Idol finale, but security had so many walkways blocked off.

Rich- The Coens create worlds for their characters. O Brother, Where Art Thou is another beauty of sight and sound with quirky people in a surreal situation.

Their choices in music are also fantastic. No Hans Zimmer yet, the music is another part of their cinematic tapestry into which the characters are woven.

Peter Stormare and Steve Buscemi are faves of mine. Their Fargo characters are true classics.
I love Stormare's chameleon qualities as a character actor - an old school acting quality missing in many movies today.

Colt definitely helped himself. I never would have graded Colt as low as 5th or 6th round, like some people have, but I think this performance solidifies his stock around the late 3rd to mid 4th. If there is a run on QBs — and why not, it always happens, and I always cringe when it does — then I wouldn't be surprised to see him go in the 3rd round. (And yes, I want to see him in San Francisco with Mike Martz. Cause Alex Smith and Shaun Hill are not the answer.)

Matt Ryan choosing not to throw: While it's considered "smart," I've never liked it. I want to see the guy throw. Let's just say I personally wouldn't take him with a Top 15 pick, although he'll be gone before the Top 5 is done.

And I should clarify, my above projections are conservative ones. Personally, I still have Colt as the #1 QB on my board, and I would not be surprised if he goes earlier than people have suggested. There are always runs on QBs, and teams always will reach. I mean, people are talking about Chad Henne as a 2nd rounder. IDK about that...

>I thought it was interesting how "The Rock" was introduced tonight as Dwayne Johnson.

He's been shedding his wrestling persona for a while now, and who could blame him. I think he's a very limited actor, but as a wrestler, he busted his butt to make maybe $1 million a year, whereas now, he makes whatever an action movie star makes.
From movies.com:
The Rock's $5.5 million salary for The Scorpion King has been registered in the Guinness Book Of Records as the highest amount paid to an actor for their first starring role.
So to further legitimize himself as an actor, he's been wanting to lose all associations with being a pro wrestler, and he hasn't wrestled full-time or even more than one appearence here and there, in least five years.
Hey, wow, amazing, it's called fact-checking with the Internet. Rather than wonder out loud about documented facts (what big-time games did certain Hall of Fame quarterbacks play in) let your fingers do the talking.
