Clapp chat; Drawings of new uniforms

Interim athletic director Carl Clapp is ready to take your questions.
Clapp is open to all topics, but there are restrictions on what he can say about the athletic director's search.
Also, there is a limit of one question per post, although you may post multiple times.

Aloha Carl,
Thank you for taking time from your busy schedule to participate in this blog.

It has been reported in this blog the athletic department is in the red between $4 million and $6 million. What role and responsibility did you play in the deficit and should this effect your future employment at UH? Why or why not?

My question for Mr. Clapp is his thoughts on the Aloha Stadium issue. Does he think UH should take over the operations of the stadium? and if so, what can UH do to generate greater revenues at the Stadium than the authority is currently doing? And finally, would UH consider building a new stadium at the Halawa site if they took over its operations?

Aloha Mr. Clapp,

First of all, thank you for being available to participate in this blog.

My question concerns the situation at Cooke Field. Coach Greg McMackin said that he was excited about the upcoming renovations with the offices, but one of his concerns was the turf situation at Cooke Field.

Where does having field turf on Cooke Field lie in the list of priorities for the athletic department?

Without a doubt, there is a disconnect between the student body attending/living on the Manoa campus and athletic. 80% of all fans at profitable events (i.e. volleyball, baseball, and basketball) are not current students

Should you either become the full time Athletic Director or remain in the department if another individual obtains the AD position, what would be your approach to enhance the presence of the students at games at the Stan Sheriff Center or Les Murakami Stadium?

This may not be part of the AD role or even UH's, however I thought you might have some influence with those that do. Is it possible to create a package that incorporates season tickets with pay-per-view away games? Seems the season ticket holder (like myself) gets hit hard if they wish to view away games, whereas the non-season ticket holder that purchases the pay-per-view package gets ALL games for a reasonable price.

Thanks for your question. I’m not sure where the numbers you’re referring to are coming from. What I can report, is that we continue to work on a balanced budget each and every year. The athletics department is still carrying forward an accumulated deficit which has been reduced slightly over the past few years.

UH faces a challenge similar to some other universities in that majority of our students commute. That being said, there are opportunities to engage both our resident and commuter students and encourage them to attend games. We are currently sharing some ideas among our staff to work more closely with students and make sure that their experience at games is a fun one. Very happy with the overall direction of the UH Athletic Department recently.

What is being done in terms of long-range planning on facilities? My frustration is that there hasn't been a vision of what the AD would like to have facility wise for the next 5-10-20 years. I’ve worked at both private and public institutions in the past including working with other state legislatures and bureaucracies on funding of an intercollegiate program. While there are differences, there are similarities including having a culture and way of doing business that has to be understood. UH athletics is very fortunate to be Hawaii’s team. If we're projecting ourselves as a rising national power in Football, how we going do that with only 4,000 tickets in a 91,000 seat stadium?
And, why I gotta wait till May when I making flights now. /s/me, a new guy trying to make a difference.

Mr. Clapp,

We understand that there are many expenses related to running different sports programs. How much of the budget is allocated for maintenance & upkeep of facilities? It would seem that the football locker room repairs (soap dispensers, duct-taped sound system unit) would be handled with routine maintenance funds.

Mahalo for your time.

Aloha mr. Clapp-

During your brief tenure under Herman Fraizer, the public knew little about you. Hence, with nothing to go on, many associate you with Herman and the disaster that unfolded. How difficult has it been for you to come out of Herman's shadow and establish your own identity?

addahknowjoe,
This will be the final question I can answer. I’ve enjoyed this opportunity to communicate directly with you. People who know me, are aware that I answer my phone, have an open door, and am always open to hearing about new ideas and opportunities. I hope everyone continues to feel free to contact me if I can be of any assistance. Working at the University of Hawaii is a privilege and I have enjoyed every minute.

Mahalo to everyone who participated and for the great questions.

bighilofan2, the UH athletic department has no say on how many tickets they can get since this is a Florida home game, lucky we are even getting that many if you ask me. In regards to waiting till May for the season tickets I think this is so they can take care of the last years season ticket holders first since they want to take care of their loyal customers first.

bhf2,
I no tink you can lay the # tix available for the UF game on CC or anyone in UHAD.
Gators sell-out every game. I would guess that if Penn St., USC or Oklahoma came in to da Swamp they would get the same #.
When Alabama Wisconsin and Michigan come here their fans are snapping up Aloha Stadium tix that WE nevah buy.
We coming along das' true; but to me, big time is like wen Wisconsin fans buy one block of UNLV SEASON TICKETS fo' make sure they had seats in Sam Boyd Stadium for their game last year!

I appreciate Clapp taking time out of his busy schedule to mingle with the common fans, but was it just me or did he say a whole lot of nothing?

He is one smooooooooth cat...he was dodging bullets left and right! I felt like I was watching The Matrix.

Carl Clapp certainly communicates well. I am truly impressed with today's chat. Good idea to have him on, ST!

I can see now why Hinshaw likes him.

Would he mind being Compliance Guy under JD?

Pomai, Stretch,

Stretch,
The 2007 softball team represented the university and the state in outstanding fashion. We are waiting a final recommendation from coach Coolen on the type of award to be provided to the student-athletes.

If this is the understanding of the AD re: the softball awards, how do you know that the kala you are collecting will go towards bracelets for the softball team? Or, is CC out of the know?

gigi,

i don't think being the compliance officer would be a wise career move for him. it is a step too far down in his case.

WarriorMojo,

I'm curious as to what you thought of the answer to your question on the Colt/soap timing. I remember those events very vividly, including the statements by Clapp and the video cameras showing the soap dispensers being installed.

I don't see much of a 'vision' that CC would bring to the AD position. This would have been a good forum for him to expound on what he would like to do at UH ~ "If I were King..." statements. Most responses were canned and middle of the road. We still don't know much about him given his answers today. We need someone with passion and ideas to move the department forward. IMUA WARRIORS!
