Aloha Rocky,
Thanks for coming by today. My question is this: Have you seen the "Manoa Poi Company" tee shirts with the slogan: "Just bring it, we'll pound it!"? It's a design we dedicated to the defense, because they DO pound! We are considering making an improved MPC design for next year. One of the posters here, James has been selling them as a fundraiser for the team.

There's no competition between the players but for some of us we just want to show the recruits a good time. I always tell the recruits that Hawaii is a special place if you like the family atmosphere and want to pursue things locally after your playing days are over because people on the islands will always remember you because you played Hawaii football.

Aloha Rocky,

Thank you for taking the time to chat with us.
As a defensive lineman you need to know on each play if the scheme is designed to stop the run or stop the pass. Since there are many different schemes used in rushing the quarterback and playing run defense,do the D-linemen often have to "key" on the offensive linemen and react to what scheme they are employing so that they can quickly decide what is best for them to do?

That's too hard to answer right now because so many people have worked tremendously hard this offseason that the competition level has been set at another level. So the top 7 will be decided when we step into the Swamp.

The biggest coaching difference that coach Mack cares for his players. He pushes you in a way to always strive for the best. He's not one to get in your face and swear and say stuff to put you down but he has a personality or an aura about himself that makes you play hard for him. A lot of players, including myself, don't want to let him down because we know how important it is to play hard for one another.

Would you use power or finesse or swim technique to defeat the best block? Why?

It all depends on what the block is. Every block needs to be countered. If they give you an aggressive block you defeat it with speed and finesse. If they give you a laid-back type of block then you go after them with power and be the aggressor. So it depends on what they show. But a d-lineman should always be the aggressor and make the o-lineman figure out how to block you.

I'm going into spring at 310 and will play next season at 290. Our defense runs all over the field so being lighter helps us to get there faster, outlast our opponent and always be ready to play without being worried because we're tired.

Our mentality this year is to treat everything like a pass rush. We will be constantly coming up the field and creating a new line of scrimmage. Run block will be played with a transition of our pass rush mentality. I want to be in both groups. I don't want to just be a player that's one sided. I want to be an all-around player.

Rocky,
Thanks for taking the time to work with the kids at the speed and quickness clinics (I took the kids to 7 or 8and I believe you were at all of them). You're a great role model and the kids really look up to you. Keep up the great work.

Mr Rocky:

With a new Coach and Athletic Director, what are the players feeling about this?

Rocky- I enjoy your bubbly personality on Princess Leila's videos! No doubt you will have a great post-football career in whatever you choose. Which leads me to ask- what are you studying and what do you see in your career crystal ball?

I love to talk, and work with people in general, so whatever opportunities in the future that come up that allows me to do that, I'm all for it. I'm majoring in Travel Industry Management but will be switching into Family Resource Management next semester. I want to try different things, but a high school counselor will be something to fall back on in the future. I had a counselor named Rodney Cavaco at Aiea High School who put timeless effort to get me here. He touched my life in a way that I want to repay him by doing it for others. That's why me working with kids is a big thing because I know how much it can do for them because it's been done for me.

Hello Rocky

Re-Team rules. In our day we didn't really have any,and consequently we would have wild parties and so forth. At UH are there rules saying you can't smoke or drink.Or not go to class. In other words are the coaches constantly keeping tabs on you.

Rocky - Just curious about who the team leader is on defense. Is he the person who sets the D for each play that is sisgnaled in? Will that be Adam?

Not necessarily. Because Mike Lafaele was our team leader last year but he never received the signals. Usually our middle linebacker will receive the calls from the sideline and make the call in the huddle.

Hahah, well . . . I guess the only time I'd favor a return to the old uniforms is for a retro' night. Thanks for answering, Rocky!

How are you spending your Spring Break?

Right here at the University of Hawaii. LOL.
The only change for spring break is that there's no school. But it becomes a bigger commitment to the program because we have to come and lift and run on our own. Especially because Spring camp starts Monday. Nobody wants to take this week off and waste all the hard effort for the last 12 weeks of training.

rock,
Can you tell us what you know about the progress of folks like Elliott Purcell, Chris Leatigaga, Alasi Toilolo and Tua Mahaley?

These guys have worked very hard. I know that their hard work will pay off for them.

Rocky, Now that you mentioned that you are spending spring break training on your own, is there anyone else that you are training with as a group?

Rocky,

Do the D-line men also talk to each other in Samoan in the trenches so the other team can’t understand?

Somewhat. Not really.

I don't mean for you to write too much, but, how would YOU design a UH Warrior-based Under Armour TV ad in order to express what the Warriors are about?

This is my last question, Rocky. Faamanu!

Mahalo

We always have to answer to our coaches. We are student-athletes, and students before athletes, so education is a top priority.
