Greg McMackin chat

Mahalo to Greg McMackin for today's chat.
We also apologize for the gaps in the first 35 minutes. Coach Mack had to take care of some business so he was off line for a bit.
But he did rally in the end.
Thanks for all who participated.
And remember what coach Mack said: Spring practice is open to the public.

Coach,

Thank you for taking the time to chat. Let's see, you've reconnected the North Shore pipeline.

Opened your doors to Hawaii High Schools.

Enforced discipline.

Brought in the Super games.

Made your coaches and players work hard this off-season.

Created excitement and renewed interest in Warrior Nation.

And showed your commitment by having your family and a horse move to Hawaii!

Thanks again and much success to you, your coaches and your players.

I have a suggestion to increase attendance at games. I think you should offer packages to tourist maybe through their accommodations or travel packages for transportation to the game and tickets. When I went to Japan I wanted to watch a baseball game but because of the language barrier I found it too difficult.

Coach,

Thank you for staying. I love that you are instilling discipline, while making it fun with Super games. Also, it meant a lot to me that you personally went to Kahuku for an in house visit, and trying to connect with the local principals, athletic directors, FB coaches, and players. I believe this effort will make the world of a difference for the team. As a regular blue colar fan who took a loan to follow the team to NOLA, I feel the same connection with the Warriors and you leading the team. I also feel heart broken about the facilities.

My question is besides buying a season ticket, what can the normal blue colar fan do to help the team? I have a stimulus payment coming from the Feds in August.

Go Warriors!

The two years that I've been in Hawaii as a coach have been the two greatest years in my 40 years in the coaching profession. The '99 year was such a special year because the team came so far and worked together and developed and ended up being the greatest turnaround in NCAA history and winning the WAC Championship. The 2007 season was even more special because a group of players and coaches came together with ohana and great heart to pull off some great victories, especially on the road, because of their togetherness and love for one another. Players make plays and our players again won a WAC Championship and represented Hawaii in their first BCS bowl game. Both years were special years to me and my family and being here as the head coach is very humbling and exciting for my wife and family and myself.

Last year the defense went from being ranked in the 90's to the 30's. Do you think you can crack the top 20 in defense ranking? The pressure is on the D this year since the "big 5" on offense have left.

Based on some of the players who have been blog guests, it seems like they are committed to win. Good Luck this year!

i just wanted to share a little tidbit with the rest of the warrior nation and something i learned about you. during june's first year here as well as yours, i was one of many curious fans who came out to the lower campus to watch the team practice. as i stood in an out of the way place on the sidelines, you were the only coach who when walking by, acknowledged my presence and you always said hello. as i watched your style of defensive coaching i fell in love with you. when you left after that first year, my heart broke and the defense has never been the same. last year when i heard you came back, i was purely overjoyed and predicted to all of my friends that we would go undefeated and that the defense was going to be awesome. you proved me right. i loved you even more. when coach jones defected to the mainland and you chose to stay because i am sure you felt something special about this place regardless of the condition of the athletic dept. you showed the aloha jj only wa ha'd about. now i love you even more. i know it will be an uphill battle for you in the beginning but please never get discouraged and always remember, you are a native son of these islands regardless of skin color. like the rainbow, we are made up of many colors. much mahalo coach. you truly represent the aloha spirit and of the warrior nation...

I think Florida and Georgia will be two of the top five ranked teams in the country next year. They are an excellent, well-coached football team and they are going to give us everything they have as we are going to give them everything we have. We have great respect for the University of Florida and their Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow but we're going down there with the attitude that we're going to win the ballgame.

The feature that Hawaii has that other schools don't have is Hawaii itself. The beauty, the people, the passion, the attitude, the togetherness, the family, all the positive things that Hawaii has, is easy to recruit to. I believe that in our administration, President McClain, Chancellor Hinshaw, Jim Donovan, I believe they will guide our facilities in a positive direction so we can not only have the beauty and passion and people of Hawaii but the facilities that we compete against in recruiting versus Mainland schools.

Tell me how we can inspire you to higher heights?

I believe the most important factor to inspire our football team is buying season tickets, filling up our stadium and everybody showing ohana to our team because we are fortunate enough to be Hawaii's team and represent all of Hawaii and Hawaii people. When we come back from Florida it would be awesome to have 50,000 people in the stands for the Weber State game. We know how important this is because of last year's thrilling season and great support through the perfect season and to the Sugar Bowl. The players thrived off of the fans and it was an awesome situation.

Coach...we're hoping you, your team, coaches, and entire State will have another great year! Is there an area of "concern" for you in this year's team given that the first game is against a National Power?

We have to rebuild our offense. We lost a star quarterback and four outstanding receivers and two starting offensive linemen. I'm confident in Ron Lee and the players that we have in our program. We will evaluate them this spring and complement them during the summer and fall camp with recruits. But it is very important that we come together as an offense and learn the fundamentals and techniques of our offense and continue to improve. Defensively, we have a veteran group back and we are going to work on continuing to get better but we are very confident in our players and we need to win early on defense. We want to be an attacking, swarming defense that gang tackles and makes big plays with emotion. I'm very confident in our defensive coaches and we will be a very physical attacking defense and I'm very confident in our players. I feel we have as good a front 7 as anyone in the country. I said last year we had one of the best linebacker groups in the country and they are all back this year. We have Ryan Mouton as well as a good safety group. So I'm very optimistic that we will continue to get better.

Thank you for rescuing Warrior Nation from the despair that we experienced in early January 2008.

Please tell us something about Greg McMackin, the man, not the coach. What sorts of things do you like to do for your personal enjoyment; is there any non-football thing that you'd like to do in Hawaii, but haven't yet had the chance?

hello Coach McMackin

As Head Coach, say in a future Bowl game, are you of the mindset of taking advantage of all of your alloted practices at the venue you are playing the game at.With that being said did it bother you that Coach Jones didn't take full advantage of practicing at the Superdome as he could have?

Coach, Im very happy that you are taking over the team. You were my first choice as soon as coach Jones left. I just had one comment. I have been a season ticket holder for years. I also have family members that have played for the team in the past. One of the things that I loves about the home games is the eo na toa chants on the speakers. I know that you have done away with the clothing brand side. But I hope that you are going to keep this. From a fans point of view this is a big deal in getting the crowd going. Especially the D. Please consider. Thanks and good luck.

Coach Mack, do you think the Super Games were effective this offseason?

I was very pleased with the results of the Super Games. Because I thought it got our team together, broke the monotony of just working the weights every day and allowed the players to have some fun, yet they were able to get great workouts and compete against each other. I think it helped us academically because guys won or lost points because of academics and it allowed us to compete against one another and get to know other players on our team. It also allowed us to develop leadership as we had 10 captains which is very important for our team's identity.

Are you planning on hiring a recruiting coordinator? If so, will it be a coach or an administrative position?

Good luck this season...all of Hawaii is behind you!

Thanks for your comment about Hawaii being behind me. I very much feel the love and ohana that the state has put out and I'm very humbled and respectful of this.
I am planning on hiring a person who will help us with recruiting. We are currently writing up the job description and recruiting is going to be one of our most important factors. We will have a foundation of recruiting in Hawaii to complement our recruiting with contacts on the Mainland.

next year we lose one third of our active roster due to graduating seniors. do we have enough guys who can continue to contribute or do we need to address the 2009 recruiting year again with junior college transfers and when do you see us recruiting 85% incoming freshmen?

Aloha, Coach Mack,

First want to tell you how happy and amped-up my entire ohana feels about your serving as head coach. There was that momentary collective wince when Coach Jones left, as you know... BUT that chapter is ancient history now, as the positive changes and initatives we've witnessed under your leadership have made us just as excited as ever about Warrior football!

Now to my question:

What — to YOU, coach — will be the measures of a successful season?

In other words, everyone naturally will be looking at the win-loss column. But what OTHER measures to are MOST important to you — fan attendance, holding teams to a certain average yardage, graduation rate, GPAs, completion of certain capital improvements on campus, or...?

Thanks for your time here, coach! We are very grateful.

It's great that you are buying season tickets. You're obviously a great supporter and we appreciate you so very much. Continue your strong support because we are going to work hard to get better and better so you and the rest of the fans and supporters can be proud of our football team.

Okay, let's ask a totally off-the-wall question: Tell us a little about Cabaret, and what it means to your family.

Cabaret is a beautiful horse that my granddaugher Kayla loves and bonds with. Kayla is a highly competitive girl in tennis and her school work and she loves to sing, but Cabaret brings a peace to her that relaxes her, and the horse and her are almost like one. I definitely knew that they were a package. If I was going to bring Kayla to Hawaii I was going to bring Cabaret to Hawaii. She sometimes has me talking on the phone to Cabaret, so Cabaret and I are pretty close too.

I've attended both UH and a Pac-10 school and noticed that UH doesn't have much school spirit. To me a huge problem has been the lack of a strong student section, a fight song or mass chant (Texas with the Horns) that every participates in or a student mascot that can appear all sporting events not just football games. What's your take being that you've been to other schools? Doesn't an actively engaged crowd, besides just yelling, be more intimidating and fun?

Thanks for being our coach.

One of our most important goals is to win the WAC Championship. It is very important in our first three ballgames to come together as a football team because after the first month we go into our WAC season and it is important that our team continues to grow and gets better every week so we can defend the WAC Championship.

How does your Head Coaching philosophy (or style) differ from June Jones?

Obviously I've coached both on the offensive side and defensive side but I am more of a defensive personality. I think we're both considered coaches that care about our players. Even though I coached in the NFL I'm more of a college, fundamental technique oriented coach than I am a pro-style coach. I think we're similar in our attitude towards the State of Hawaii and the culture of Hawaii and I think that June has done an unbelievable job in what he has done here in Hawaii. I always felt he's the best coach in the nation and what I want to accomplish is to keep continuity and to keep the journey going.

The walk on program has traditionally produced some outstanding players who were overlooked or under-recruited here. Now that Hawaii is a hotbed of recruiting many players are choosing full rides to smaller schools rather than a walk on invite to UH. Do you see this trend hurting the walk on program or do you expect to continue to consistently get outstanding players annually from it?

Mike, That's exactly my point. We have a fight song and just play it. I go to the games and have tickets. No one knows the words and it just seems like another TD celebration song. Maybe it's just Hawaii and we don't celebrate that way, but wouldn't it be better if there was at least some kind of clapping, hand raising, and everyone singing the song. When you see SC, Texas, Alabama, etc. doing these things, doesn't it make you want to be a part of it.

Hi Coach!
It's me and family from Big City Diner last Friday. First thank you again for accepting the position of Head Coach, giving all of us hope and moving our program in the right direction. My question is what will we do differently in terms of mental/ physical/spiritual preparation, practice, travel, etc. to not only win in FL but to do so in convincing fashion? We do BELIEVE. Congrats again....Wes, Lisa & Christian.

First of all, I love Big City Diner. It's one of my favorite places for my wife and I to eat lunch or dinner. People there are so great and we always enjoy meeting people.
Our basic program will continue to exist. I've always believe that if things aren't broken, you don't have to fix them. We will continue to practice in the morning, we will continue the same traveling philosophy. I think both ideas are great ideas. We will work on more fundamentals and techniques in practice so we can get better during the season. We will try to develop depth on both sides of the ball so we can play at Florida in the humidity we will face. Offensively we will try to become more effective in running the football. We will have the quarterback under center a little more often even though the pass will still set up the run in our plan. Last year we had a veteran quarterback and receivers who could ad lib, and we need to be a little more basic in our plan.

ok, maybe I am a tad biased being in the band, but yeah I think we do need to promote school spirit more. I think things like really pushing the wear green on Fridays would really help, and maybe putting posters up around upper campus promoting school spirit and having the fight song lyrics on them. Things like that might help. I see a lot of school spirit around lower campus but not so much on upper campus.. and I think the faculty should help too.

It would be great if there was an effort to coordinate a cheer w/ the fight song or something that would be distinctive to UH. USC has the "Fight on" cheer, Georgia does the "Glory to Old Georgia", etc. etc. I would think the band/cheer people could come up with something. If not, I'm sure the collective effort of the Tsaikos could produce something worthwhile in this area.

Aloha Coach!

Thank you for staying in Hawaii and thank you for taking the time to be with us here today.

You have been the defensive mind of every team you have been with in college and in the pros. Now that you are a head coach how has your approach to coaching changed other than the fact that you have the entire team to monitor and mentor as opposed to the defensive players?

Thanks,
Kevin
Pearl City, HI

P.S. Roland Fujii makes awesome Koa wood work doesn't he? =)

Roland made some great pennants for us with a 'H' and the University of Hawaii. Even more so he made me a clock with "2007 WAC Championship" on it.
I've been fortunate to be a high school head coach and small college head coach. But most of my career I've been the head coach of the defense. I've worked with coaches that have allowed me to coach the defensive half of the football team. It's been a great experience in becoming a head coach. I feel very blessed to be the head coach at the University of Hawaii and I will work very hard for the success of the program.

Aloha Coach! Mahalo for what appears to be a seamless transition in taking the helm from Coach Jones.

I am really excited about our players. I have the utmost respect and love for them. I have been fortunate to have been to battle with a large portion of the players we have and I have great confidence in them, but I have never been a big stat guy. the important statistics to our team are turnovers, tackles for losses, defensive touchdowns, third-down passing percentage, statistics such as these that actually win games. A team can throw the ball and get a lot of passing yards or run it a hundred times and get a lot of running yards but what is important is the yards per game and the statistics that help you win a ball game. The last two years I've been here we were in the 30s as far as total defense, but the important statistics were that we were in the top 20 in interceptions, turnovers, tackles for losses, sacks, third-down percentage, and those are the statistics that our team strives for other than the big statistic of winning.

Last year the defense played outstanding under your defensive schemes. How much more will you open the playbook this season?

we will continue to work the techniques and principles and fundamentals of our defense. We will add some new concepts to our defense to take it to the next level. One thing is our corners are going to play a lot of press this spring that will make us a better football team. But we need to continue to allow our players to play and not confuse them with a lot of tricky football. There are only so many ways you can blitz and I believe in our defensive talent and I want to allow our big dogs to eat.

We do, a song called "Fight for Old Hawai'i" which we just call Fight For Old... and is the first song in our pre-game show. Hawai'i 5-0, not so much a fight song but yeah. Fight For Old has words, or at least rumored to, but I've never seen them. For the band, at te beginning of the season we are required to memorize the words to Co-ed, and we sing co-ed on the busses and we even sang it departing Honolulu for N.O, and as we were on final on the flight home. I would totally support some new stuff as long as the old stuff isn't lost.

You have a great mix of asst coaches on your staff. How would you describe you management style?

I like to let the coaches coach. I feel very fortunate to have a great staff of coaches. I hand selected every coach. I'm very proud of coaching with Cal and Ron Lee who are special friends and great coaches, George Lumpkin and Rich Miano, who are also great friends and have so much knowledge and great positive influence on our players, and our younger coaches who were brought here to teach techniques which they have learned in our program or in similar packages and who relate to the players because of their youth. It's just a great mixture of coaches who are great teachers, relate to players, care about players and these kinds of coaches I will delegate responsibilities to and let them know what I want done and trust them to get the job done.

Coach Mack...

Thank you for staying!!!

Starting in the 2005 season, Coach Jones (at the suggestion of Coach Glanville as I understand it) instituted a practice of limiting the number of players allowed to suit up for home games. Alot of these players not allowed to suit up end up watching the game from the stands...like us spectators.

Are you considering changing this practice to allow more (or even most) players to suit up for home games to reward these players for their contribution (during practices) so that they can share the excitement with their teammates (who actually get to play) from the sidelines...instead of the stands?

Mahalo for your time and dedication!

We are going to proceed exactly as we did last year. I will game plan with the defensive coaches and I will call the plays. If there's a bad play called or our team gives up a big play, then I listened to Cal when he made the call. Just kidding. I really trust Ron Lee and I'm excited about him getting the opportunity to make the calls. There are three great run and shoot coaches: June Jones, Mouse Davis and Ron Lee. Being the head coach I'm going to be able to call a few plays and we're going to go deep.

Another question-

Could the band create their own kick ass drum cadence? One with a theme that encompasses the entire Pacific Rim?

Would be butt kickin' to here the band embrace the drum cadences from Tahitian to Taiko! The stadium would be rockin!

BTW- I dig it when the band in the Sheriff drops the second verse of 5-0 into a reggae beat. Dat sounds supah tuff!

Is there anything that you want Warrior fans to know about your rules of discipline for the U.H. Warrior football team? I don’t mean to pry, it’s just that the subject has been in the news lately (i.e., Graunke, and Jones [not Coach, of course]).

I have a very simple philosophy, and that is "Don't embarrass the program." Being a defensive-minded coach. I believe in discipline and being consistent. I believe in treating all players the same whether they are a walk on or scholarship player, or where they come from. Nothing matters to me other than being fair to the players. And to be fair, you need to have discipline.

Coach, maybe you could make your doing the haka/ha'a the carrot on the stick — when we score win No. 7, or the game that clinches the winning season, for example, then at the end of the game you join the team for the haka.

The people of Hawaii, the University, the players, the coaches, have all made me and my family feel so welcome. It's important to me to do a good job for the University of Hawaii and continue the football tradition that we have. This is Hawaii's football team. We represent you and we are truly going to need your support and effort this season. We need to fill up the stands for every home game. Our motto this season is the same as Under Armours, in that we will "Protect Our House" and the best way to do that is to have 50,000 screaming fans intimidating the opponent and helping us and inspiring our players to win every home game next season.

Now . . . a suggestion from Chicken Grease regarding all this drum talk: maybe a taiko drum number can be drawn up that bespeaks the Warrior team and nation. That would really sound cool. Would really give a mood. Would really give the oppponent something to go back home and talk about. And maybe a version can be done specifically for the Tsaikos, in which case we can call the drums "Tsaiko" drum . . . ing . . . no? No?

The ball is rollin with ideas on chants, drum cadence, etc. Just remember that the idea is to get the crowd fired up and PARTICIPATING. It'll be great for the band, but think about how you will get the crowd involved....clapping, waving hands (hand signs), stomping feet, making some sort specific sound, etc. By creating these traditions, everyone knows when to participate and what to do. I'm not knockin anything, just helping with the brainstorming.

Mango, I agree with you on controlling the paper on the field. Since I watch games from the mainland, seeing the paper on the field is trashy. No other college games on TV have that much trash floating around on the field. I can see the problem with safety on the field.

Stephen & Princess Leila,
Mahalo for all of the work to bring the chat guests on the blog. It's great to get the insights into how people's minds tick, what the dreams are, and how they perceive us, the fans.

Perhaps setting up a separate blog chat before the guest arrives to collect questions, and then sort by contributor. Take the first one from each person, and cut & paste into the new blog with the guest to be answered. Then you can cycle through the list of questions, altho a way to accomodate late-comers is needed. Just an idea... It would help to have a system with 2 monitors in order to have both blog chats up in order to cut & paste. Harder to do with the laptops that I see in use.

Sorry, but I gotta get this off my chest. In my opinion when we have these separate blogs set up for blog guests, then for the most part the ONLY posts should be questions directed to the guest and his/her responses. All the other stuff is unnecessarily distracting.

Maybe I'm just old school, but when I go to a movie I want to watch the movie, not listen to people in the audience talking about irrelevant private stuff. Same thing when we have a guest on the blog.

If we were all in the same room as our guest, I sincerely hope that people wouldn't be making private jokes and fooling around while our guest has the stage. A little bit is fine, but when every other post is off-topic, it's pretty irritating, at least to me.

And, "WildWahine", don't ever call me "bentofan" again.

It's less live and spontaneous but more common sensical, here is my solution: One day before the chats, get bloggers to submit their best questions, ST relays the questions to the blog guest, who then spends less time thinking on their feet or at the keyboard. Because you are right, one guy typing against 100 people asking questions simultaneously is not a fair fight. I say let the blog host and guest script the first hour of responses and then turn it into a free-for-all

Warriormojo,

I agree, it's hard to follow the "conversation" that's supposed to be going on in the blog. I think it's impolite to be essentially "talking over" the speaker = the guest. That's why I suggested a separate question collecting blog prior to the guest chat. I would be concerned if this was happening during the chat with V. Hinshaw. As an administrator, she may not be used to the loose format of the blog. Wonder if she checks in here once in a while, ST, do you know? That was also A-sports question which didn't get answered, but I think it might have been skipped because there was no question mark?

it was put out there, he chose not to answer. You gotta have faith, my brother, you gotta have faith. In his hands rests Warrior Nation. We gotta give him some slack imho. When you look at his overall answers, you know he is concerned about us, Warrior Nation, is thoughtful, and I have no doubt he will burn bridges if thats what he has do. I for one would not want to force him into a corner when its obvious Cunney and Seitz are trying to work something out, but are getting blocked by Carlisle. Mike W,

Good to hear you guys are keeping the spirit up in the band. You guys are so lucky to have a successful football coach and seasons.

My last years in band was with Von Crappen, and it wasn't pleasant. It makes me appreciate what we got now so much more.

And I know your pain. Our fans (not including the ones present here) are not the most enthusiastic or loud in terms of cheering with the band or cheerleaders. Not sure if that's because its we don't have that history of success from way back when. Or maybe also its a cultural thing where we are meant to be polite and nice.

You wouldn't believe this, but before, we used to play the OTHER team's fight songs during pregame right before Co-Ed. Their fans would sing and cheer louder than ours when Co-Ed was finally played.

My friend said the reason no one knows the words to Co-Ed is because its too complex. Too many words. You need to stupidize the song. Make it simpler and easier. Look at all of the Georgia cheers and songs. Easy for drunk people to remember. That and they barked all the time. Easy to do that while drunk.

My friends and I have discussed this forever. Not sure what it'll take to get our fans and stadium to be like a mainland type of crowd. Hopefully with the successes of the team recently, we can take advantage of this and maybe work with Coach or JD with the cheerleaders and band to possibly teach the unknowing.

Thanks again for your guys hard work! (there's a lot of ex-BG people here too if you haven't noticed)

Everyone in the stands should be jumping with you guys in unison after every TD!

Probably the "KRAZIEST" thing I ever seen at Aloha Stadium was during the State finals that Punahou played a few years back.
My wife and I was on the way home on H1 and heard that the game was close at the end so we decided to pop in.
Walked in thru the South EZ and WHOA!
The whole half of the stadium was white out and doing that stuff for the Puns.

I saw the news tonight about Keenan Jones. So Mack knew about that today, but chose not to talk about it here. Plenty class the man. He giving Keenan chance to resolve it in the system. But probably the system's timetable is stacked against him. Anyway, shows the coach is thoughtful and been through this before.

well, 1st I wanna say, I didn't like getting barked at every time a Georgia fan walked by.. I thought i was kinda rude. We would just sing Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono as they barked at us. I would recommend changing Co-ed, but adding more songs and cheers and chants. I agree, something easy to do and we all can get in on. Damn, I had one last suggestion for the Coach, maybe if ST would mention it to him next time he sees him? Coach's Night at Big City or something like that. Anyways, tbh, the jumping up and down to the touchdown song and yelling "Are you ready" is the best part of the game. It's almost a little bit of a stress reliever :)

Anyways, despite what has been said and some of it is true, our crowd has grown louder last season and hopefully we can come out full force this coming season. I would love to see sell outs for more than just 2 games. I like the tea leaves and the white noise makers.. however sometimes they can get in the way while keeping track of your instrument and flip folder. I personally want to make our games more like a college football game, but I do also want to keep the uniqueness of states present at the games for all the away fans to see.

Don't think you need to dumb down the fight song. There aren't that many words, but maybe the song is a bit long being that it goes through the verses twice. It may not be the best song, but it's what we have right now. To get it going, it needs to be student-driven but a united effort by the university to create something new. Words need to be on the scoreboard to help with those that don't know it. Eventually, you sing it enough, you'll know it by heart and it becomes a part of attending games and a tradition and people feel that they are part of something. You graduate and years later, you still know it b/c it was part of your college experience. If you didn't go to UH, well then you just become part of the UH family. This was the best I could find with people actually participating. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GG3dmQzqbdk&NR=1

>>It would be great if there was an effort to coordinate a cheer w/ the fight song or something that would be distinctive to UH. USC has the "Fight on" cheer,

I went to USC for two years, do you mean "Conquest" which is just an awesome song, no cheer, it's the song where the crowd does an almost Heil H!tler arm-pumping motion. VERY demoralizing if SC is beating you to hear that song after each score. I honestly don't believe the Hawaii student body or alumni or fans are wired to do militaristic things like that. Having said that, and having attended another 3 seasons of UH football as a student, I think Co-Ed is too soft to be a fight song. Sounds more like commercial jingle to buy detergent or pizza. Instead of a song, how about piped-in noise, like how the Indiana Pacers play recordings of a stock car race, LOL. Visiting teams used to hate that until the NBA made them stop.

I actually knew the words to the Co-ed song by the time I was at King Intermediate. Going to every game with a Mom who is an alum and who sang it every time the band played it made it easy for me to pick the song up. Plus, didn't they put the lyrics on the screen at Aloha Stadium? I thought I remembered that helping me learn it.

I do agree that the song isn't very aggressive and goes on too long to be an ideal football fight song. Simple chants work best, at least from my experience attending Big 12 (before that Southwest Conference) and Pac 10 games at the schools I attended.

The easier and shorter the chant is, the LOUDER the crowd can get...and that is when it gets to be the most effective. But I would settle for the pro-UH crowd making a lot of noise on 3rd down when UH is on defense and NOT making noise when UH has the ball. I really hated how UH fans made so much noise when Colt was trying to call out signals at San Jose...and thought that the SJSU crowd was effective at making a lot of noise on 3rd down when UH had the ball. Of course, they were helped by the music playing over the loudspeakers that were *still* playing when UH was hiking the ball.

A few years back Neuheisel ran amok with the University of Washington when officials learned he had participated in NCAA basketball tournament pools, wagering $6,400 over a two-year span, and winning $8,409.

Mike Wedge,

I do NOT think that UH has to change Co-ed. It just needs something else to go *with* Co-ed, so they don't just have one thing to rally the crowd.

For example, Texas plays "The Eyes of Texas" before and after each game. It basically serves as their fight song...but it is NOT what they cheer during the game. During the game they chant things like "Texas/Fight" and "Go/Horns" and "De/Fense", with different parts of the crowd chanting either before or after the slash. Simple things to chant...a TON of people I saw at games were too drunk to chant anything more complicated anyway.

Going through the SI Vault this week, I read a lot of Hawaii mentions. This one isn't a great mention, but it is interesting as a look back.

Since 1972, when Hawaii's Fabulous Five went 24-3 and packed Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu game after game, success has passed somewhere over the Rainbows. A debilitating probation incurred during the tenure of former coach Bruce O'Neil left his successor, Larry Little, with precious little to build on, and Little stepped down at the end of last season. His nine years were hardly paradisiacal. Players were shipped in and out, and little more than half graduated. Expectations had ebbed so low that last season, when Garland Hughes became the first of Little's Rainbows ever to graduate in as few as 4½ years, he actually apologized. Seems that Hughes felt he might have given hoops short shrift in favor of academics.

Walking into this situation is former BYU coach Frank Arnold, who replaces Little. Under Little, the Bows would annually match themselves up against the weakest team in their Rainbow Classic Christmas tourney, then play some mainland power like Maryland or Oklahoma, and lose. Meanwhile, across town, NAIA Chaminade would beat Virginia, Louisville or SMU, then suffer the indignity of their Division I neighbor refusing to play them.

Hawaii passed over Chaminade coach Merv Lopes, a native islander, in favor of Arnold. The new Bow coach would do well to upgrade his schedule—and see that his players stick around and pay more attention to theirs.

Tom Henderson mention. By the way, I'm saving certain stuff for tomorrow...

Hawaii is a fine place to visit, which is why coaches hate to journey there. Their teams like it so much they forget to play basketball. Matters could be still worse because the University of Hawaii's first-year coach, Bruce O'Neil, has assembled an array of stunning Rainbows, among them Tom Henderson, the former Olympian, and Melton Werts, who developed into a promising center as a freshman. Now, if they do not fall into the same lassitude as their visitors, aloha.
Permalink 03/25/08 @ 21:06
Some stats from the past.

The Rainbows' best players are Middle Linebacker Falaniko Noga, who runs a 4.6 40, bench-presses 460 pounds and has a 34-inch vertical leap, and Wide Receiver Walter Murray, who does a 4.4 40 and holds the national high school record in the 300-meter low hurdles (35.79).

From August 1984.

91. Hawaii WAC co-champs two years ago, the Rainbows finished eighth in the conference in '93. They lost 14 starters from that team, but one returning is defensive lineman George Noga, brother of former Hawaii and NFL players Pete, Niko and Al.
Permalink 03/25/08 @ 21:13
Highlighting players before the 1987 season, SI picked a good one.

We'll put Hawaii's Al Noga at nose-guard, even though he spends more time at tackle for the Rainbow Warriors. At 6'2", 260, Noga is compact and fast; he averaged 1.2 sacks per game last season. A sociology major who is also studying music, he has lived in Hawaii since he was four years old, having moved there from American Samoa.

"Football in Hawaii is very big," Noga says. "If we win the WAC this year, the people will go crazy. They'll party out. Even before the games, they're celebrating. They celebrate with ti leaves. They wave them in the air like pom-poms, only ti leaves are better because you don't have to make them. You just pick them." The free-spirited Noga will be in charge of desserts at our training meals. His specialty is fa'alifo, a Sa-moan dish made of coconut milk, breadfruit, taro and banana.

The Department of Energy penalized Battelle for lax worker safety in their government lab in Idaho.

Note: Sandia Labs is lucky that there was as much oversight when I worked there in 1990. I worked in a building with some extremely hazardous material (all I can say is that my work was on devices that could resist nuclear radiation), so we had drills at least once per week with the alarms going off and all of us gathering at a predetermined location. However, one day something actually DID spill and a worker hit the panic button and got out of there. The entire building evacuated...except for the people working in my lab (between 5 to 10 people). When the people returned to the building, they were SHOCKED that we had not evacuated, and we were SHOCKED that we had no notice of evacuation after all of the drills that went smoothly. Thankfully, nobody was hurt...but I was amazed that the one time we had a real emergency evacuation the alarm in my lab did not go off.

I am mostly a lurker and looked forward to today's chat with Mac. I enjoyed it but there was one particular person who broke the rules by posting numerous questions, then attacking/antagonizing other members and making side chatter.

I'm sorry, I am just really excited about Coach Mack and next season... I am always the first one to bring up Hawai'i Athletics and I get excited. I was really hoping Coach Mack would chime in and say something about how he felt about the game atmosphere and what he wanted to see done and how he was work to make it better. In all honesty I was hoping for a tad more dialogue between the coach and people who were on at the time. I think the discussion we were having was relevant just the way it was approached was in bad form. Shouldn't have commented on Brian's question.. as for the other side conversations, well, I was just confused!

Good Evening

The chat in between the chat, like "wild wahine you crack my ribs up" was kind of funny. She did admit though-she lost her inhibitions and was apologetic.Come to think of it, of all the fans out there,I do like the rah,rah rah wild wahine types. And at the games she'd be the type of fan the coaches and players want. The energy she exudes. And where I can see where her heart is-she's forgiven by me.

Bring over a topic from the previous blog, Tsaikos cookbook. On the Tsaikos.com site there is a recipe section which I have included a sub-section called "Tsaikos Cookbook". You would have to be a registered user to post a recipe, we do that to keep unwanted type things off the site, I know some don't like to register but that's life I'm afraid, with so many oddballs out there. If you all want you can post your recipes and when we have enough I would put it into a cookbook format and send to ST/Wena to do whatever with.

I rarely read the blog guest chat while it is in progress because it is too slow.

Instead I wait til it is over, then I start from the top and just read the guest's responses -- never the stuff in between.

Saves time and energy.

Best way to read a chat is to use the "search" key.
Type in Greg McMackin and you can read all of his comments. That's one of the reasons why we attach the question to each answer.
Search is best if you want to avoid off-topic chatter. And it saves time.

ST -- I was too busy at work today when the cook book discussion occurred, but that's a good idea for a fund-raiser.

Tsaiko-Gate Cook Bookk by The Tsai-kos

Featuring sections on
- poke and pupus
- Open charcoal fire fare
- Weber kettle fare
- wok and propane stove fare
- Home preparation entree's
- Home preparation noodles
- Home preparation desserts
etc.

...or do we need another season of Tsaiko-Gates to develop more dishes and take photos?

Tsai-ko poetry and Brew808 haiku could be a separate pub. :-)

I agree, off topic chatter is rude and distracting to our guests. Just anounce that there's no off topic posting until the Q&A session is finished. Doesn't seem so hard, just a little curtesy and self policing would do it. It also would allow for more questions to be answered, if the guest doesn't have to sift through all the chatter. Just a thought.

Re Tsaiko cookbook. I attended a lecture by the Advertiser's Wanda Adams regarding the cookbook she'd just published.

She said the main thing to worry about is PLAGIARISM.

People are not supposed to publish recipes that belong to someone else.

So if you like somebody's recipe, you have to alter it significantly to make it your own.

She also said each recipe should be tested and proofread by more than 1 person.

We just show the guest the question. And the guest either types or dictates the answer.
Freud believed there are no accidents. People don't do things because, oops, my bad. There's intent — whether it's from a competitor or somebody bored. So we work around it. Can't sweat the small stuff.

I agree, the off-topic chatter was pretty bad today. A previous poster suggested to just skip it and look for the block quotes...I don't think it's that simple because the host has to read all of them to find the question! Especially when a lot of the questions follow a brief statement made by the poster.

I also agree how Warrior Mojo put it, the stage belonged to Coach Mack and Princess. Perhaps the Coach and Princess didn't mind the side chatter, but it boils down to them having to read everything to find the question and Tsaikos missing out on answers to some good questions that were posted. Just my 2 cents that no asked for, but hey, the guest isn't here.

I used to have one of those indoor four-foot rims when I was a kid. As I got older, I raised it up using various boxes, getting it up to 5½ ft. (Any higher, and my shots would graze the ceiling.) Now everytime I'm at an arcade where there's a basketball game, I make a good amount of tickets. When we went to Vegas when I was younger, that's all I did at Circus Circus. And then the nieces took all the tickets... :-D

I've got a meeting with the client tomorrow and had to get the audit folder. After getting everything finalized, she plugged in guitar hero, and made me sing one song. Get Rid of Ants

Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it "home," can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so,

Well, al, I guess it's you and me ;-)

I edited and laid out a cookbook once. It was actually a bestseller at Borders. "West Kauai Plantation Heritage". Wanda Adams gave it a good review! We incorporated some anecdotal histories of the plantation era of Kauai and arranged the recipes according to ethnic groups in order of their migration.

A Tsai-ko cookbook could be laced with gametales, memorable T-gate anecdotes or travel experiences like the NOLA trip.

Good Evening

One idea I would pass on to the athletic department and football program is the idea of issuing backstage, all access,or VIP passes to fans, potential contributers or the coveted philanthropists.

Take a look at how concerts,NASCAR,PGA Tour,symphonies,
museums,Broadway Shows...even Sea Life Park,Bishop Museum they all have all have all access passes, allowing the spectator an insight of what goes behind the scene.

Aside from the obvious-raising monies. Opening your door and allowing the public an intimate look of what goes behind the scenes you hope one day that that same person not only stays a fan.But becomes a big contributor, especially in football.

Now,I'm looking at the UH and I see how they are trying to elicit ideas of how to improve. And the obvious answers,
probably will be the obvious, like fix this or fix that. But the same proverb of giving a boy a fish he will eat for a day.But if you teach him how to fish he will have food for the rest of his life would be the advice I would give to the UH,namely an infusion of monies may not be the answer. As aforementioned I would look at ways of schmoozing with the fans, creating an atmosphere of allowing the fans to look behind the scene and tugging at their purse strings will result if their heart strings are evoked. And there is no better way than creating relationships with the fans.

Eh, anything's worth checking. While reading up on the corn meal thing, I also learned of a few other things to try: cinnamon (as a repellant) and hot sauce.

I always peel a banana the "reverse" way. Now that I think of it, I haven't had many of those strings. I've also been peeling them sideways, those are pretty clean.

Okay, time to go to bed. Night, al(l).
