I'm getting my fix of Warrior Football right now. I'm watching the 2006 Idaho game. Just pau the 1st Qtr. Idaho played tough for the first 15 minutes, but it's all over now. They're gonna put up 21 more points before half time.

AWESOME, ST! This is what I've been waiting to see. My goodness I think our O-line is going to rock, baby!

Hisatake vs. Letuli at LT is going to be a battle royal.

AhSoon gets the early nod at LG because of his experience, but Ginlack played pretty well at RG last year and the loser of the Hisatake vs. Letuli battle may drop back inside.

Interesting to see Hansen at C. I thought Lefiti was going to be #2 there.

Ieru would be a huge RG for us, but Lefiti may be the guy based on his rep out of high school. Didn't see enough of Lipp or Lafu last year.

I gotta believe that Kia has the edge here, at least until LaCount shows up in the fall. Could LaCount pick things up fast enough to start at LT? Can't wait to find out.

Kind of curious why Daniel JOhnson hasn't made more of an impact. He was all state out of Washington I think. And what happened to Travis Campbell and Manu-Olevao?

Read today's HA on JJ's dispute over $400K. Funny I never heard he disputed that at the time he quit. He's relying on a 2003 verbal. Moa betta for UH the legal guys fight dis one out, no love lost here. True, I would have negotiated that away at the beginning of 07 if he'd asked. But the way he left really hiked up my panty.

I was going to post this after reading ST's post. I guess WarriorMojo and I have been thinking the same thing about the OL.

Interesting to see Hansen at C. I thought Lefiti was going to be #2 there.

I thought that Lafu might be the #2 center, but if he has the starting RG spot then I guess he would focus on just that position. If Estes got hurt, I thought that they would slide Lafu over and someone else would take the guard position...but I haven't seen the workouts and this is just my projection from last year.

Guard would be a good fit for Tuioti-Mariner as he would be able to concentrate on blocking and not have to worry about calling schemes for the entire O-Line.

No matter how you look at it, the interior O-Line looks solid, and spring ball will bring out the best tackles.

The starting offensive lineman who just quit Michigan's team really got some things off his chest. His father also played for Michigan, so this is a long-time relationship that has gone bad.

Offensive lineman Justin Boren is not leaving Michigan quietly.

Boren, who made 14 starts for the Wolverines, received his release papers on Wednesday and will transfer after completing this semester, according to his father, Mike Boren, a former U-M linebacker.

A day after Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez announced Boren had decided to leave the team following four spring practices, Boren issued a somewhat vague statement saying, in part, that the "family values" he had grown accustomed to while playing for Michigan had "eroded in just a few months" under Rodriguez.

"Michigan football was a family, built on mutual respect and support for each other from Coach Carr on down. We knew it took the entire family, a team effort, and we all worked together. I have great trouble accept that those family values have eroded in just a few months. That same helmet that I was raised on and proudly claimed for the last two years, now brings a completely different emotion to me, one that interferes with practicing and playing my best and mentally preparing for what is required.

http://brahsome.com/2008/03/27/kenneth-page-appears-to-have-a-large-bag-of-bills-for-an-amateur-athlete/

It’s pretty safe to say that each and every academic institution in America doesn’t have the cleanest reputation when it comes to participating in Division I athletics. We like to turn a blind eye most of the time, but when we get the following email (with the above picture attached), it’s pretty hard to ignore.

This pic was on Clemson recruit Kenneth Page’s Myspace page and it came down about as quickly as it went up. As some of you know he was a huge 4 star OL football recruit
this past year and it came down to Clemson and UNC where [UNC] lost out on signing day.

He must have been working hard this winter.

Now, one would assume that Kenneth — whose Myspace page you can see here — would be smart enough not to have a picture taken of himself in the backseat of a car, wearing a Clemson orange polo shirt and holding a huge bag of straight-from-the-bank $20 bills. On the other hand, we thought Kelvin Sampson could quit texting his players by now.

So we did our due diligence and checked up on his Scout.com page as well, and frankly, it’s pretty hard to argue that it’s not in fact Kenneth in the photo with the bills. It’s entirely possible that Page just has a really rich grandmother who likes to hand out wrapped bills in plastic bags, but either way, you gotta figure Kenneth and Lil’ Bobby got some explaining to do.
Permalink 03/27/08 @ 05:54
Yes, Clemson recruit Kenneth Page could have some explaining to do. According to the site Brahsome, Page posted this image on his MySpace page and "it came down about as quickly as it went up." Unfortunately for Page, somebody grabbed it during those few precious moments.

Page, an offensive guard from A.C. Flora High in Columbia, S.C., was graded a four-star recruit by Rivals. He picked the Tigers over North Carolina, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, South Carolina and Tennessee. Golly gee, wonder why? As Brahsome points out, those are "straight-from-the-bank $20 bills."

The NFL again is looking into the possibility of allowing a designated defensive player to wear a radio earpiece similar to the coach-to-quarterback communicators already in place.

Teams are expected to vote on the proposal next week at the annual league meetings in Palm Beach, Fla. The proposal, which needs 24 votes to pass, fell two votes shy a year ago.

"I don't want to get overly confident about a vote, but I do feel that its time has come," Rich McKay, Atlanta Falcons general manager and co-chairman of the competition committee, said today in a conference call with reporters.

Both offensive and defensive coaches objected to previous versions of the proposal. Offensive coaches wondered why defenses needed the devices, which allow teams to send in adjustments without using hand signals, and defensive coaches were concerned about how it would be handled if the radio-wearing player wasn't part of a particular package and therefore was watching from the sideline.

McKay said the focus on New England's illegal videotaping of defensive hand signals could make teams more willing to vote for the defensive helmet radios.

Good Thursday Warrior nation.

Great lineup for the '08 season.

Question -
1. Who is the backup for our " Iceman" Dan Kelley.
2. Who will replace punter Tim Grasso ?
3. Would Jake Ingram be considered 3rd man for Center posistion incase of injuries to Estes and Hansen.

These are 3 critical posistions that can make or break the game.

OK, I just woke up.
So here are the best answers I can provide:
• To organize spring ball, there has to be three distinct teams. So while some guys may be listed at No. 2, if this were an actual game situation and No. 1 went down, someone other than the No. 2 might slide over.
• Grasso is in Utah this semester. He returns in August.
• Ingram's backup is going to be ... Ingram. Yes, his younger brother joins the team in August.
• Another Temecula kicker walks on in August. He'll serve a year as an apprentice to Kelly, then take over in 2009.
• I left off the heights and weights because the weights vary so much at this time of year. For instance, Salas is listed at 185. He's 205 now.
• And I have no idea how to code the other site, which is why everything came out in one paragraph.

Loa,
I wouldn't put it past HF to say he did say it, whether he did or not, just so that UH will be out $400K. I don't think however, that it will release JJ from having to pay the penalty unless something more tangible comes up to back it up. HF was removed for not doing his job soooo...

And the boosters should get half the kala or at the very least, all the money should be put into the football program exclusively. IMHO

Second, the format is just like another paper's.

re: JJ.
My take is that this gets settled.
We can all say a contract is a contract, but he coached the five seasons of the contract, gave UH the biggest season in its history and made the athletic department a lot of money.
This debate is being held at the Upper Campus level.
But if UH sues to get JJ to pay, then it's going to be very difficult to atract a top-level coach here.
This arrangement only benefits the bad coaches who get fired before their contracts expire.

When JJ left my thoughts were he gotta do what he gotta do for himself.

With this morning's article about his "cockaroach" attempt it shows his true self. It was always about the money. Nevah mind about his professed love for the land & people of Hawaii, his book and his foundation. Money truly is the "root of all evil" and in this case da kala got a hold of him, all $10,400,008 worth.

Just like when family starts fighting over an inheritance. Money & Greed can really make things ugly. In this case of JJ, it's the wrong shade of green.

Be a man JJ, practice what you have been preaching to your players for the past 9 years. Honor your commitments & maintain integrity. Garans if it was Coach Mac, he would have paid the $400,008 due.

He's not really a natural running back, but right now he's behind at defensive end. He's a strong guy and very athletic, but he missed most of last season because of the shoulder injury.
We don't list special team members, but that appears to be his best shot this season, when he will a second-year freshman.

I didn't look at it that way, even though he did go to a D1 school, I guess he did coach all five seasons. I just don't really like the fact that behind the scenes contract "agreements" are made like that. But maybe a lot of that goes on. I just wonder if the shoe were on the other foot, would a coach give up what was contractually owed to him or her? I would hope too, that future top level coaches and their agents secure things in writing to avoid situations like this. Your points are very valid.

Wouldn't it be interesting if HF did something crazy like put something in writing to JJ that he shouldn't have? For example, when they changed JJ's contract from ending after the season to ending in May (for the convenience of accounting purposes), what if something was said/written?

Basically, wouldn't JJ have served an extra 6 months for free due to UH's accounting change? According to the old calendar, I'm guessing that is one of Steinberg's arguments.

However, if I was JJ I would come up with a compromise like donating the entire $400k to Na Koa. That way the money will be used to benefit the team and not sucked away by Upper Campus.

If Upper Campus can take some or a lot of the Sugar Bowl money, could they try to take the $400k from JJ too? Maybe I'm thinking outside the box too much...

Re: JJ.
Just to be clear he's not getting paid for not working here the final six months of his contract.
The final year of the contract runs from July 1 through June 30. He was paid $400,000.16 from July 1 through Dec. 20. He did not receive the $400,000.16. from January through June 30.
So he only has received $400,000.16 for the 2007 season.
Now UH wants him to pay $400,000.16 for an early-escape clause.
If he does, then he would net zero dollars for coaching the 2007 season, right?
I have to believe there was an agreement in place because UH gave Jones permission to talk to SMU.
That's my take.
I think they should waive the fee.
I mean, JJ could have been stink about it and served out the remainder of his contract, then leave. If that happened, UH wouldn't have been able to hire McMackin or any other coach while JJ was on the payroll.

I understand your point about how JJ could have just served out his contract and that would have been bad for UH, but that would also have prevented him recruiting or going through Spring practice with another school, so basically he would have been forced to skip next season. Garret,

Would you rather have a disgruntled head coach going into the Fall with Florida as your first game AND Herman Frazier as your AD. Or would you rather have a team that seems to be very happy with Coach Mack AND Jim Donovan as your AD? I am not happy that JJ left, but I think Hawaii is better off now that JJ left. It has made the lawmakers realize that if you don't start helping to upgrade the facilities, another head coach might leave. Chancellor Hinshaw sounds like she is going to support the UH athletics. I think it's all good in UH land, let JJ have some relief. He did get us 2.5 million dollars.

I respectfully disagree, and I have been one of the biggest JJ fans ... till he resigned. If he stayed he could not have taken the SMU job at $2M/year becasue they would have hired someone else. UH would have signed a solid recruiting class and Mac would still have been here to complete for the job. When he leaves in May, we would probably still handle the HF situation similiar to what has happened already. Am I wrong that this move was really a JJ for JJ move?

Lastly, who trusts what LS says? If JJ comes out and says, "I had an agreement with _______ on this date that the termination fees would be waived." (and it is confirmed) I am wrong. But this sounds like LS throwing up FUD to get out of the contract.

ST,

According to your timeline, JJ wasn't paid for ANY of the time UH was in New Orleans. And it would appear that UH still owes JJ the bonus he's supposed to get for the team playing in a bowl game.

I would subtract the money owed due to the bowl bonus from the money owed for leaving early. No sense having checks going back and forth...this really needs to be put behind already.

Good morning Tsaikos and ST!

I just wanted to post and say Hi before the new site goes into effect. This is just in case I can't find the blog when it launches. If you don't find a post from me in a day or two, send out a search party.

BTW, I love the way Brew posts. I told Joe this morning that as a supplement to ST's roster, Brew posted a list of new recruits. When he asked where it was, I told him scroll down until you see the SMILEY FACES. :)

Hope I can find y'all when I come home tonight.

Have a great day everyone!

If they were suppose to launch at noon, then the people asking us the math questions don't know math themselves. On the front page it says it's going to start in 1 1/2 hours which would make it 11:00am Hawaii time.

ST - no wonder we all need your insight, thanks for keeping it on track.

yes thats a good point about allowing JJ to meet with SMU. but while JJ could've been stink and hurt Hawaii, he would've lost his opportunity with SMU?

don't think a full waiver is warranted but guess you're right about a negotiated settlement.

SDSU REALLY got hit hard by the APR.

San Diego State's football program will suffer a reduction of six scholarships over the next two seasons because of a fourth straight year of poor Academic Progress Rates.

But the news could have been a lot worse for SDSU this year: The Aztecs' original penalty was the maximum of nine scholarships, a sanction that was reduced thanks to an appeal to the NCAA.

If the situation doesn't improve and its APR is under 900, SDSU also could be facing additional “historical” penalties down the road, including a reduction in practice and recruiting time.

Not liking the new look/layout of the Advertiser. A very unnecessary changeup of the color scheme, too. Oh well, that's "progress" sometimes.

If JJ only got a half year's pay in 2007 (including Na Koa donations, ST?), we may well have a "basic sense of fairness" issue in UH trying to basically zero out his pay for the season...especially considering what a season it was.

By the way ST, how does Funaki throw after 3.5 years in the run-n-shoot?

And if they ask a question after EVERY post, and take away the "show all" after every post, then I guess I will have to *significantly* reduce the number of links I post. It will just take a lot more time for every post, and the hassle will make it hard to post articles that often.

Also, based on what ST said about Jones only receiving $400k which went from June - Dec., there is nothing to pay back. Again, I believe it is a penalty clause for leaving early, but HF released Jones from his contract. We don't know the exact details if in fact HF relieved Jones of the penalty.

Garrett,
I agree with your assessment. There is no need for UH to 'give away' money when it is so important for our lower campus improvements. JJ is making 3 times what he make at UH. If there is/was an agreement then pay it, if not, I hope JJ would just step in and tell LS to drop it. Let's do the right thing and move on.

We would have never had a chance to get a coach like JJ at that time, when he accepted a paltry 325K, leaving a lot of money on the table. He revived our program back to respectability and we are now better off then ever, so let's just let it go already and move on. Otherwise, we just keep scratching an old scab.

My old membership in the HA forums did not work so I re-signed in to snag the LizKauai handle.
There is room for a lot more integrated blog participation as each member gets their own blogspace and photo upload space. Kinda like HA is turning into My HA Space.

The notices say you have to join as a member to blog but I don't see that restriction on the beta blog. If they require membership, I can see a lot of our people being lost.

On the other hand, the ability to share more stuff is there. Garret can post his comments on his own blog and we can go look.
I can post my pix and SteveM can put up event notices, etc.
Smart move on HA's part to try to grab their share of a burgeoning online community.

Thanks guys...

Wow... That is going to get some getting used to.

It's weird because I can imagine that blogging there feels like going to a tgate or blog bash and everyone got new haircuts and gained/lost 50lbs since the last time you saw them.

The eyes need time to adjust.

Jason,

I literally "gagged" when I stepped into my car.

I took the freeway from Waipio to Pearl City just so I could drive faster with all the windows rolled down so I could get some air in there.

Funny that LizKauai was available - that was my old forum name.

One small moment of cool in the middle of all this hullaballoo surrounding the launch of the redesigned honoluluadvertiser.com:

Turn to the back of today's B section, where you'll find a full-page ad explaining the new site.

At the bottom of the page you'll find that management chose to spotlight one outstanding HA blog and staffer, the combo that draws more traffic/mass than anything else in the HA universe.

Recognize someone?

In the fine-print copy, a "fan club" is also mentioned. :D

Ronnie you don't need to register for the blog as of yet, but to use the forums or post a blog for your self. The only reason I said it would be a good idea to register is that the day may come that you would have to register to comment on the blogs also, so then you would have your name registered so no need to come up with a new name.
