Hi Jim!

Thanks for being up front and transparent about the state of the Athletic Department. I pray that all involved (eve us little guys) will rally together to address the situation and find solutions!

Mr. Donovan,

Thank you again for giving us some time in your busy schedule. After reading this mornings paper and your response to the Legislature I was wondering if you had the chance to meet with Herman Frazier to discuss the financial situation in the Athletic Department?

Hi Jim:
I know that you and the Athletic Department opposes having a legislative audit of your department but clearly the credibility of your department is in question thanks to Herman Frazier's tenure. How can you convince the legislature as well as the general public that the athletic department can be trusted in areas such as finances especially since you still have staffers from Mr. Frazier's administration still on board?

Ok here's my (narrow) question:
I want to make reservations for Florida to attend the first game of the season but there is no guarantee I can get a game ticket. I paid the $50 to be a season ticket holder this year after becoming a game-attending fan last season.
When can we expect to see Swamp tickets go on sale by UH and what are my chances that I will be able to buy one?

ok- 2 questions in one.

Hey Jim, thanks for coming on such short notice. I wouldn't blame you if you choose to leave at any time; this slowdown is a mess, and we all know you're a busy man.

I know that Upper Campus is opposed to an audit by Marion Higa's office; are you also opposed to it, and if so, why? (Or if not, why?) Personally, I think these audits are a welcome thing, but Upper Campus officials are insistent that they know better than anybody else.

How can you convince the legislature as well as the general public that the athletic department can be trusted in areas such as finances especially since you still have staffers from Mr. Frazier's administration still on board?

Every year we undergo a financial audit from an independant CPA firm (under GASB Rules and Regulations). There's really no additional value having another entity do another financial audit. As far as a management audit, the president of the university has stated an intention to have an independant CPA firm conduct one for us. This normally happens for any large department or college on campus that is undergoing an administrative change. My point is, I believe this independant CPA firm would make suggestions and corrections just as well as the legislative auditor.

Aloha Mr. Donovan,

It has become a common topic amongst us here and elsewhere that there is a concern with the way revenue from the Rainbowtique stores are being distributed.

While many of us here have NO problem with the money going directly back to the University in the form of auxiliary services, will you eventually be looking into different ways those monies would be appropriated towards the athletic department?

We're still in the process of making a final determination on the local sale of Florida game tickets (versus UH). I anticipate having a press release on this information within a couple weeks. We have received several thousand tickets -- still working on how many of those we have to pay for and how many are complimentary. We will work to accomodate as many Koa Anuenue members, season ticket holders, corporate partners and general public as possible. Again, a press release should be forthcoming within a couple weeks.

There has been talk in the past about playing a game in Japan and expanding our fan base and market to that region. I just returned from Tokyo and have seen first hand that they can be very passionate about sports there. I think it would be awesome if they adopted UH as their team and regularly came to attend games here in numbers comparable to like the Honolulu Marathon.

My question:
Is that something you are still looking into at this time and how soon would that be able to take place?

I miss the walks too. As far as bills working their way through the Legislature that benefit UH athletics -- most of them are moving forward. The biggest impactful bills are repair and maintenance/capital improvement project funds to expand, renovate and improve our athletic facilities. Another important bill that continues to progress is the removal of the University of Hawaii (system) from the state procurement code. This would also have a very positive long term impact on UH athletics if the bill is passed and signed. Bottom line is, we're very appreciative of the support that the legislative and executive branches have provided for UH athletics over the years, and we will continue to work with them on future issues.

We will continue to work closely with all departments and areas of the university to make UH a better place for students and something our whole state can be proud of. I've learned a long time ago that the focus needs to be on the big picture when it comes to revenues. Certainly we need to find new revenue streams or enhance existing ones and the best way to do that is to have a high level of cooperation throughout the university. We will always look into different situations but again, we will approach it in the spirit of cooperation.

Mr. Donovan,

It concerns me that we don't fill up the stadium for most football games. Add the fact that our fans are more subdued than other college fans and we seem to be missing the excitement of a true college football stadium. (with the exception of a few games)

I was wondering what your thoughts are on having a free or $5 section for students of all ages? The North end zone orange level could work. It could be a first come, first served basis with tickets issued as you walk into the stadium (to avoid scalping). I feel that having this section actually fill up with younger, high energy, cheering fans (right next to the visitor section) could add more energy to the stadium. What do you think?

This is a concept that we will take a look at. I think the most important thing is to engage a dialogue with UH student leaders to make sure the athletic department is doing its best to accomodate the students desires. Along those lines I will be meeting with a member of the ASUH in the next week to discuss what UH athletics can do to increase student attendance and participation at our athletic events. Through this process an athletic fee may eventually develop.

Thank you for owning up for Fraizer's problems with the budget. I think that act was very important to smooth the ruffled feathers of the legislators. The legislators will be taking a lot heat if they don't give crazy kinds kala to UH. Making it easy for the legislature to give UH the kala is importnat. So, I commend you for this very important gesture. Well done.

Jim - I was at the Sugar Bowl and noted quite a few legislators there. Did they go on their own dime or did UH pay for them? I am also particularly miffed that the non staff medical volunteers were not included but offered a seat on the charter on their own expense. It bothers me as I then found out that the doctors volunteer their time on game day and at other times but still old regime made them pay for NO trip if they wanted to go. Further understand team orthopedic surgeon paid his own way as he felt the team really needed him on the sideline just in case...whether UH paid for trip or not.

Will you have a public e-mail address where we'll be able to contact you directly? Cause I'll be honest, I disagree with the opinion that an outside audit is unnecessary; but unlike other UH officials, I feel that you're willing to at least listen to opposing viewpoints and consider them fairly.

At the very least, I hope that should an outside audit occur, then you won't blindly criticize it like other UH officials have in the past.

Totals for Repairs and Maintenance and Capital Improvement projects are still being developed. It will probably be a few more months before we have a clear picture on these expenditures over the next year or two. Then as we move forward there will be the potential of additional funding next year from the Legislature and possibly from major donors.

When you do find out, could you you please let everyone know? My "educated" guess is that if the "private donors" didn't fully fund, then the $$ had to come from somewhere else. . . so, to me, that would either have to be from the UH upper campus, or another portion of the UH Athletic budget. . . . meaning that if Jones got paid, someone else didn't, or something else didn't get paid for, or it's part of the $4+ million deficit. . .

Assuming the commitments were not fulfilled, isn't that money that should be pursued from the "private donors"?

a lot of the former athletes are pissed because jones changed the name of the team to warriors. it was ok when larry price named them rainbow warriors. nothing wrong with that. a coach should not be allowed to erase a long tradition. hey i visited the campus a month or so back and it is really a dump. we got to do something to make it a showplace.

JD, what do you think about adding a section on the Hawaii Athletics site where it's like Itunes where fans can pay a small fee to download and watch a previous UH sporting event from the previous year or even longer than that?
03/28/08 @ 12:01

WONDERFUL IDEA SIR!!!

Although the footage probably cannot be from K5 or ESPN cameras and production.

It will have to be an independent thing from UH.

So perhaps something for the AV'ers at Manoa to work on as part of class.

Again, WONDERFUL IDEA!!!

Did you hear that UH successfully sacrificed the runner to 2nd on a bunt down the 3rd base line? Unfortunately, as I write this, the inning ends w/a runner on 3rd. Making progress though, right?

BTW,

Just spoke briefly with Coach Aranda and I have to say that sounds like Coach Mack hired a good one. A real nice guy who's eager to get started and took time to answer my questions regarding the upcoming clinic.

I will be attending the Warrior Football Coaching Clinic in hopes to catch a glimpse into the mind of the men that will be leading our team onto the field every game.

Also I want to see where my personal ability is to soak in the basic info so that I may be able to coach myself.

How goes the "fixification" of the new site? I guess things were so bad the Donovan chat had to be moved here, even though this old site apparently picked up some technical difficulties of its own.

Donovan certainly seems like the right choice for AD. Wanted to ask him about whether there'd be any gauging of public interest for the Florida game, getting some travel packages ready, etc., but I guess it can wait 'til the next chat. One thing's for sure, it'll be hard to get any additional allotment of tickets with those rabid Florida fans snapping 'em up (gator pun sorta intended).

When you do find out, could you you please let everyone know? My "educated" guess is that if the "private donors" didn't fully fund, then the $$ had to come from somewhere else. . . so, to me, that would either have to be from the UH upper campus, or another portion of the UH Athletic budget. . . . meaning that if Jones got paid, someone else didn't, or something else didn't get paid for, or it's part of the $4+ million deficit. . .

Assuming the commitments were not fulfilled, isn't that money that should be pursued from the "private donors"?

bungahead,

ST already revealed that a significant portion of the $400k from private donors actually came from Na Koa. So, that did NOT come out of the UH budget.

The sad thing is that if HF could have gotten private donors for the $400k like he said he would then Na Koa would have had more money available for the Warrior program.

Looks like Will Brogan has a chance to be a starting QB...but he has to beat out a 6'4" Virginia transfer. I like how just being around Colt is considered to help Will's chances now.

Kevin McCabe, a 6-4, 210-pounder who transferred from Virginia, gets first shot at replacing Joe Ruggiero as the starting quarterback.

Will Brogan (6-1, 200), who played in the run-and-shoot offense of June Jones at the University of Hawaii before coming to Cal; sophomore Brad Dawson, a graduate of Thomas Jefferson and brother of former Washington & Jefferson College standout Brian Dawson; and freshman Zach Grossi (6-2, 215) give Cal a deep pool of quarterbacks.

"McCabe is ahead," Luckhardt said. "Brogan has been around Colt Brennan and he has a level of maturity that we like. Dawson has missed the last two springs so it's nice to have him here. And we're going to red-shirt Grossi. One of the tough parts is to get reps for all these guys."

Everyone probably saw this already, but I thought I'd post it anyway.

University of Hawaii defensive back Keenan Jones appeared in court on Thursday on charges he assaulted his ex-girlfriend.

The woman told police she and Jones argued about money he owed her. She said Jones then pushed her and then slammed the door behind her, breaking two of her toes.

Police charged Jones with second-degree assault. He also faces charges on another felony case for a separate incident with the same woman.

Maybe thats one reason why JJ is still supporting Na Koa, to pay them back.

Good question for Mr. Donovan though, what would he say to JJ. It would put alot of speculation behind us so we could move on.

It would be real easy if JJ only got a half year salary. If that is true, then all JD should say to him is thank you for all that you've done for the people of Hawaii, and good luck in your future.
Permalink 03/28/08 @ 13:20
Sporting News really doesn't like Colt. But at least they put him in very good company.

The point is this: The spread offense -- the scheme that is nothing more than the triple option from the shotgun and the scheme Rodriguez has used to change the face of the game -- doesn't prepare quarterbacks for the next level. When was the last time a triple option quarterback made it big in the NFL? Here's a hint: never.

It hasn't helped that Alex Smith, the No. 1 overall pick three years ago by the 49ers, still is struggling and is a year or two away from the dreaded b-word. Or that Vince Young, one of the most dynamic players in college football history, regressed in his second season in the league after teams adjusted to his running ability.

The NFL is a play-action world. You run the ball, you throw the ball off play-action. In the spread, the quarterback never turns his back to the defense, never loses sight of the free safety, never has to adjust. In the NFL, those 2 seconds of change in a five-step drop are more like 2 hours for quarterbacks who haven't done it.

Just last week, an NFL scout told me that West Virginia quarterback Pat White will be a "terrific wide receiver" at the next level. Scouts have similar thoughts about ubertalented Florida quarterback Tim Tebow. And record-setting quarterback Colt Brennan, once labeled a potential first-round draft pick, now appears, at best, a late-round pick next month.

bighilofan2,

I think it is clear, both from ST's post and from how UH spread the pay over the year instead of giving coaches a huge lump sum, that JJ only got paid half his salary for the past season. Still, the way the contract is worded JJ might owe more...unless HF did something not in UH's best interest (it wouldn't be the first time) and JJ is off the hook.

Good luck to Chad Kapanui and Chad Kalilimoku in their game against Billings tonight!

Outlaws quarterback Chris Dixon completed 19 of 26 passes for 264 yards and six touchdowns. The Bandits know they can't let Dixon get comfortable again.

"I think we have to get more pressure," says defensive back Alex Ardley. "More pressure and hit him more. He didn't even get hit last game so we got to come out and put some hits on him and let him throw that ball up and get some picks."

"The mistakes that we made, the scores that we didn't put up, it would have been a real good game," says quarterback Chad Kapanui. "Our team was a lot better than the score was and we're going to show them this week."

Sioux City is 0-7 all-time against Billings.

http://www.siouxcityjournal.com/articles/2008/03/28/sports/scrapbooks/bandits/08/march/492-032808.txt

Another article about the game the Chads have tonight. Their team added another Chad...too bad his last name wasn't Owens.

There were no days off this week for the Sioux City Bandits.

First-year head coach Jarrod DeGeorgia appreciated the professionalism his team showed in the days that followed last Saturday's 72-38 loss on the road to the Billings Outlaws.

"It's a humbling experience getting beat 70-something to 30-something. Everyone was in the weight room every day this week and everyone was in the film room every day. There was no day off and we practiced every day getting ready for what we'll see (Friday).

"There's lot of professionals on this team and everyone realizes their mistakes. It was a quiet ride home. The guys were disappointed in the way they played, but it starts on top. We were outcoached and a bit outplayed. Everyone can do better and it starts at top with me."

Sioux City quarterback Chad Kapanui (451 yards, 4 TDs) has completed 69 percent of his passes (40 of 58). Tommy Hofer (9 catches, 124 yards) leads the receivers with three touchdowns.

Cornerback Alex Ardley tops the defense with 15 tackles while free safety Chris Reid has 14.5. The Bandits have yet to force a turnover.

Things could change in that department because Chad Hustedt, Morningside College's career leader with 374 yards of interception returns, signed this week with the Bandits.

I dunno, some . . . fancy shmancy put-on-airs, type. OK, I will continue now), as thou heedest ways of old, tried and true, ever faithful. 'Tis 2.0 the way, or have we had enow?!!

Posting this for those lurking here:

Psst. One blogger who like talk Pidgin (can't post a link to his blog) is also a Moanalua grad, and he pointed out that the music dept is collecting donations for a new marimba. I had a lot of friends in the band and orchestra, and I'm sure the band geeks here know how much hard work they put in; as such, they deserve the best the program can offer. MoHS is taking donations via mail and online, if you'd like to give:

Actually, Garret, what I recall is that the Great One reported that Na Koa was one of the "private donors", and also that there was some sort of figure that it had committed to contribute (can't remember the figure). . . .But, I don't recall reading that the amounts committed had ACTUALLY been paid into the UH system so that they could be paid to JJ as salary.

If the Great One has further clarification on that subtle but important distinction, I'd be interested and appreciative to hear about it. . . . .

The question(s): "Did Na Koa fulfill it's commitment(s) to pay a part of the "private donor" portion of JJ's yearly compensation under his most recent contract?"

p.s. Garret,

Maybe you could help me out and use some of your research wizardry to let me know I'm wrong about the distinction I raise, or to help the Great One answer my question.

Aloha, Bungahead
