Hi Jim!

Thanks for being up front and transparent about the state of the Athletic Department. I pray that all involved (eve us little guys) will rally together to address the situation and find solutions!

Mr. Donovan,

Thank you again for giving us some time in your busy schedule. After reading this mornings paper and your response to the Legislature I was wondering if you had the chance to meet with Herman Frazier to discuss the financial situation in the Athletic Department?

Hi Jim:
I know that you and the Athletic Department opposes having a legislative audit of your department but clearly the credibility of your department is in question thanks to Herman Frazier's tenure. How can you convince the legislature as well as the general public that the athletic department can be trusted in areas such as finances especially since you still have staffers from Mr. Frazier's administration still on board?

Ok here's my (narrow) question:
I want to make reservations for Florida to attend the first game of the season but there is no guarantee I can get a game ticket. I paid the $50 to be a season ticket holder this year after becoming a game-attending fan last season.
When can we expect to see Swamp tickets go on sale by UH and what are my chances that I will be able to buy one?

ok- 2 questions in one.

Hey Jim, thanks for coming on such short notice. I wouldn't blame you if you choose to leave at any time; this slowdown is a mess, and we all know you're a busy man.

I know that Upper Campus is opposed to an audit by Marion Higa's office; are you also opposed to it, and if so, why? (Or if not, why?) Personally, I think these audits are a welcome thing, but Upper Campus officials are insistent that they know better than anybody else.

How can you convince the legislature as well as the general public that the athletic department can be trusted in areas such as finances especially since you still have staffers from Mr. Frazier's administration still on board?

Every year we undergo a financial audit from an independant CPA firm (under GASB Rules and Regulations). There's really no additional value having another entity do another financial audit. As far as a management audit, the president of the university has stated an intention to have an independant CPA firm conduct one for us. This normally happens for any large department or college on campus that is undergoing an administrative change. My point is, I believe this independant CPA firm would make suggestions and corrections just as well as the legislative auditor.

Aloha Mr. Donovan,

It has become a common topic amongst us here and elsewhere that there is a concern with the way revenue from the Rainbowtique stores are being distributed.

While many of us here have NO problem with the money going directly back to the University in the form of auxiliary services, will you eventually be looking into different ways those monies would be appropriated towards the athletic department?

We're still in the process of making a final determination on the local sale of Florida game tickets (versus UH). I anticipate having a press release on this information within a couple weeks. We have received several thousand tickets -- still working on how many of those we have to pay for and how many are complimentary. We will work to accomodate as many Koa Anuenue members, season ticket holders, corporate partners and general public as possible. Again, a press release should be forthcoming within a couple weeks.

There has been talk in the past about playing a game in Japan and expanding our fan base and market to that region. I just returned from Tokyo and have seen first hand that they can be very passionate about sports there. I think it would be awesome if they adopted UH as their team and regularly came to attend games here in numbers comparable to like the Honolulu Marathon.

My question:
Is that something you are still looking into at this time and how soon would that be able to take place?

I miss the walks too. As far as bills working their way through the Legislature that benefit UH athletics -- most of them are moving forward. The biggest impactful bills are repair and maintenance/capital improvement project funds to expand, renovate and improve our athletic facilities. Another important bill that continues to progress is the removal of the University of Hawaii (system) from the state procurement code. This would also have a very positive long term impact on UH athletics if the bill is passed and signed. Bottom line is, we're very appreciative of the support that the legislative and executive branches have provided for UH athletics over the years, and we will continue to work with them on future issues.

We will continue to work closely with all departments and areas of the university to make UH a better place for students and something our whole state can be proud of. I've learned a long time ago that the focus needs to be on the big picture when it comes to revenues. Certainly we need to find new revenue streams or enhance existing ones and the best way to do that is to have a high level of cooperation throughout the university. We will always look into different situations but again, we will approach it in the spirit of cooperation.

Mr. Donovan,

It concerns me that we don't fill up the stadium for most football games. Add the fact that our fans are more subdued than other college fans and we seem to be missing the excitement of a true college football stadium. (with the exception of a few games)

I was wondering what your thoughts are on having a free or $5 section for students of all ages? The North end zone orange level could work. It could be a first come, first served basis with tickets issued as you walk into the stadium (to avoid scalping). I feel that having this section actually fill up with younger, high energy, cheering fans (right next to the visitor section) could add more energy to the stadium. What do you think?

This is a concept that we will take a look at. I think the most important thing is to engage a dialogue with UH student leaders to make sure the athletic department is doing its best to accomodate the students desires. Along those lines I will be meeting with a member of the ASUH in the next week to discuss what UH athletics can do to increase student attendance and participation at our athletic events. Through this process an athletic fee may eventually develop.

Thank you for owning up for Fraizer's problems with the budget. I think that act was very important to smooth the ruffled feathers of the legislators. The legislators will be taking a lot heat if they don't give crazy kinds kala to UH. Making it easy for the legislature to give UH the kala is importnat. So, I commend you for this very important gesture. Well done.

Jim - I was at the Sugar Bowl and noted quite a few legislators there. Did they go on their own dime or did UH pay for them? I am also particularly miffed that the non staff medical volunteers were not included but offered a seat on the charter on their own expense. It bothers me as I then found out that the doctors volunteer their time on game day and at other times but still old regime made them pay for NO trip if they wanted to go. Further understand team orthopedic surgeon paid his own way as he felt the team really needed him on the sideline just in case...whether UH paid for trip or not.

Will you have a public e-mail address where we'll be able to contact you directly? Cause I'll be honest, I disagree with the opinion that an outside audit is unnecessary; but unlike other UH officials, I feel that you're willing to at least listen to opposing viewpoints and consider them fairly.

At the very least, I hope that should an outside audit occur, then you won't blindly criticize it like other UH officials have in the past.

Totals for Repairs and Maintenance and Capital Improvement projects are still being developed. It will probably be a few more months before we have a clear picture on these expenditures over the next year or two. Then as we move forward there will be the potential of additional funding next year from the Legislature and possibly from major donors.

When you do find out, could you you please let everyone know? My "educated" guess is that if the "private donors" didn't fully fund, then the $$ had to come from somewhere else. . . so, to me, that would either have to be from the UH upper campus, or another portion of the UH Athletic budget. . . . meaning that if Jones got paid, someone else didn't, or something else didn't get paid for, or it's part of the $4+ million deficit. . .

Assuming the commitments were not fulfilled, isn't that money that should be pursued from the "private donors"?

Wow, this old neighborhood looks so nice. It's good to come home sometimes, lol. Off course, I've found it after it was all over.

So I'm sitting here riding the PINEs, looking at the playground playing field once and opening the bento box...

a lot of the former athletes are pissed because jones changed the name of the team to warriors. it was ok when larry price named them rainbow warriors. nothing wrong with that. a coach should not be allowed to erase a long tradition. hey i visited the campus a month or so back and it is really a dump. we got to do something to make it a showplace.

JD, what do you think about adding a section on the Hawaii Athletics site where it's like Itunes where fans can pay a small fee to download and watch a previous UH sporting event from the previous year or even longer than that?
03/28/08 @ 12:01

WONDERFUL IDEA SIR!!!

Although the footage probably cannot be from K5 or ESPN cameras and production.

It will have to be an independent thing from UH.

So perhaps something for the AV'ers at Manoa to work on as part of class.

Again, WONDERFUL IDEA!!!

Stretch:

I thought the exact same thing when I heard about the home run.

Did you hear that UH successfully sacrificed the runner to 2nd on a bunt down the 3rd base line? Unfortunately, as I write this, the inning ends w/a runner on 3rd. Making progress though, right?

By the way, it's not Black Cloud, it's Dark Cloud...and you & UHfan808 are a part of it too! =)

Is everyone staying on this side or are we going over to the new site?

BTW,

Just spoke briefly with Coach Aranda and I have to say that sounds like Coach Mack hired a good one. A real nice guy who's eager to get started and took time to answer my questions regarding the upcoming clinic.

I will be attending the Warrior Football Coaching Clinic in hopes to catch a glimpse into the mind of the men that will be leading our team onto the field every game.

Also I want to see where my personal ability is to soak in the basic info so that I may be able to coach myself.

Lemme lurk on the new site to see if more posts pop up there before I stay here.

What's old is new. That 2.0 is SO U.S.S. Excelsior on its first turn of the ignition. THIS blog's the Enterprise.

And I don't even LIKE Star Trek.

Chicken Grease -- you must be remembering Scotty's line to Kirk after that. It was something like...

"The more they over-think the plumbing, the easier it is to stop it up."

Amen.

How goes the "fixification" of the new site? I guess things were so bad the Donovan chat had to be moved here, even though this old site apparently picked up some technical difficulties of its own.

Donovan certainly seems like the right choice for AD. Wanted to ask him about whether there'd be any gauging of public interest for the Florida game, getting some travel packages ready, etc., but I guess it can wait 'til the next chat. One thing's for sure, it'll be hard to get any additional allotment of tickets with those rabid Florida fans snapping 'em up (gator pun sorta intended).

Ok, we'll just stay here until ST says it's safe to move into our new home. Wouldn't want the walls to cave in on us or anything...

In the mean time, is anyone beside Rob, Liz, and I going to the Fresno State game in October? The boys will need all the support they can get in that hostile environment!

Hah ahahah, yeah, StephenM I remember that line . . . hey, I may be a Star Trek fan after all.

Maybe we're not hearing from ST as he's cleaning house right about now, BWWWWAAAHHAHAH HA AHAH.

Viva la revolucion (to all you Dragon Ash fans as well :) ) . . . here's to keeping the ORIGINAL blogs! It's kinda' like how you'll almost always choose ORIGINAL pancakes when there's banana, blueberry, all that, and you can't choose 'xactly which version you want.
